I have been on eight cruises and have cruised with Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Carnival, Costa, and Viking River. All have been great. This MSC cruise, however, would turn anyone against cruising. I chose this cruise because it began in Buenos Aires and featured two days in Rio de Janeiro, the two places I most wanted to see in South America. What MSC does not tell you is that this ship is operated like a hop on, hop off bus, allowing people to check in and out all along the route. This meant that the ship was in a constant state of upheaval, with passengers who were embarking and disembarking competing with cruisers trying to get on and off the ship for excursions. I don't know what went wrong on the second day in Rio, but those embarking passengers were packed into the terminal for several hours waiting to board. Other issues with this ship: It was nearly impossible to get a drink. There were not enough cocktail waitresses in the lounge areas and if you tried to get a drink at the bar the bartender ignored you in favor of filling orders for the waitresses. Also, many of the lounge bars were closed on sea days so if you wanted to relax with a book and drink in one of them you had to wander around looking for an open bar. The food in the dining room was mediocre and unvaried. Every salad sat in a bath of watery dressing because the lettuce hadn't been dried properly after rinsing. Two elevators were broken during the entire cruise. The buffet area was always crowded; my guess is the short-term passengers were determined to make the most of their brief stay by eating as much as humanly possible. There were lovely lounges on one deck -- with all the views completely blocked by lifeboats. In short, I would warn anyone off this particular cruise and, personally, I'd be afraid to trust MSC again. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we wanted a short year end cruise. It was very convenient for us as it sailed from Buenos Aires to Rio and we could us the ship as a hotel in Rio for the night of December 30th to December 31st, 2019. The ship is nice like any Costa ship made by Fincantieri. We embarked in Buenos Aires after a two days stay in this amazing city. Embarkation procedures were quick and efficient. We had two cabins; my wife and I were in balcony cabin 6420 and my daughter and son in law were in interior cabin 7224. Our balcony cabin was quite nice, similar to the one that we had two years ago in Costa Diadema. My daughter said their interior premium cabin was pretty nice too. We enjoyed the many bars and the entertainment of this ship. It is a ship with great ambiance and with lots of music to choose from. The entertainment people were fantastic. The food at the restaurant New York New York was just ok not great like in other ships like Luminosa or Diadema, maybe because the menu is better on Mediterranean cruises. Here the menu was a mix of Italian, Brasilian and Argentinian dishes to please their South American guests.Some dishes were great like the Caprese salad made with the mozzarella made on the ship, or the roasted prime rib or the pasta dishes.Our waiter Marlon was just correct. Regarding our cabin steward, we never met him. He did not make any of the nice animals they usually make with towels.We had to ask through the virtual concierge for soap, shampoo, body cream and additional pillows. The room was cleaned and the bed made in the morning, never at night like in other cruises. We thought , we deserved a better service being level Perla Costa Club members. We must say that the shows at the theater were very nice, we loved the Christmas show and the Lyric show with a great tenor. Service at the bars was good. We did not take any excursion. Read Less

We wanted to go to Antarctica for an affordable price and were excited when Princess started offering trips there again after 8 years. We took our 2 kids (ages 6 and 8) and my brother even brought his 1 year old daughter. Pros: 1) Antarctica is truly beautiful and amazing. 2) The Falkland Islands were great and the tours are all in personal vehicles so you get a very small group as you go to see the penguins. 3) Overall, seeing the penguins at many times during the cruise was always amazing, as well as whales and other wildlife. 4) The kids club was amazing and kept the kids happy so we could enjoy the scenery. They would point things out from the huge windows so the kids still saw the highlights. Cons: 1) It seems to be about 50/50 for chance of going to Montevideo. 2) More importantly, DO NOT go on this cruise if you're hoping to walk on the continent. Though there is a side trip offered (at $3600), they canceled it this trip (the day before it was scheduled) and the captain said it gets canceled more often than not. People were hugely disappointed and Princess did not seem very consolatory. It was not even based on the weather that it got canceled but on problems with the side trip company they partnered with. 3) For the scenic cruising, many changes were made to itinerary so don't get too attached. For example we didn't get to see Esperanza station or the primary part of Deception Island. It's not Princess' fault, but ice and sea conditions. 4) Finally, there are a lot of at sea days so be prepared! Overall, please understand that we loved the cruise and would go again in a heartbeat. However, I want people to understand that many things didn't go according to plan. Read Less

Chose this cruise on a whim, as we saw an advertisement from a consolidator, contacted our agent to see what she could do, and then jumped. It gave me bragging rights, whatever that means, to say I was on all seven continents before I turned 70. (Okay, I didn't 'touch' Antarctica, but it touched me, so close enough.) We also had kids who had other plans for Christmas so we were free to travel. We flew into Buenos Aires a couple days early and explored. I suggest this because of the long flight from the US, particularly the Pacific Northwest. We stayed in the city so were able to walk to the Recoleta area, a ten minute cab ride to the ship. The cemetery where Eva Peron was buried was a highlight, as was the Teatro Colon'. Great walking city, with some taxi work. Enjoyed Buenos Aires, knew nothing about the rest of the itinerary except Antarctica and the Falkland Islands, but was willing to learn. And learn we did. This cruise is an education, with loads of lectures from specialists. The ports are touch and go because of the weather, as is the route in the Antarctica, so for totally uptight, obsessed with "what I was told" folks might want to rethink this. Montevideo, Uruguay is a large, poor city that gives an interesting counterpoint to Buenos Aires. Puerto Madryn had an amazing boardwalk, so it was a great Sunday stroll, watching the locals play on a beautiful beach. Stanley, in the Falklands, was a reminder that wars are occasionally fought for stupid reasons. This bleak, but beautiful bunch of small islands, was a great visit and our first penguin experience. From there it was six days at sea, one to Antarctica, four in Antarctica, one back to South America. The weather cooperated, which isn't necessarily normal, so we were able to be outside, watching ice flows, animals, wind, water, and all the rest. We had to adjust our route constantly so our experience will not necessarily the same for others. We dreaded Drake Passage, but it wasn't bad. The other ports, Ushuaia, Puenta Arenas, Chacabuco, and Castro were small, unique, and really needed one to take an excursion. We missed Puerto Montt because of weather, arriving at Santiago early. HAL did a great job of adjusting and taking precautions, so it was all good. The dining room was exceptional. We enjoyed the entertainment, both around the ship and on the main stage. Scheduling that must be a nightmare as opinions vary so much. We spent most of our time in the Mix bar listening to Dan, the piano man. The Lido was fine, not a real buffet fan, but the Asian food and the salad bar were exceptional. Omelettes to order are not to be missed. We were comped a meal at the Canaletto, one of the upscale restaurants, and we were not that impressed. It was fine, but not if we were paying. In fact, we turned down another comp meal there as we preferred the Main Dining Room, mostly because of our wonderful server, Eka and his crew. Actually the crew is the highlight. Our dining room group was amazing as were our four cabin stewards (yes, four-to be explained). Our one negative would be our room, actually an issue with the room and the initial way in which the problem was handled. We ended up moving half way through the cruise, which worked out, but we felt it would not have been necessary if words moved to action, rather than just being words. Read Less

This cruise was 3 years in the making for us, and at a not inconsiderable cost, I am thrilled to say it was worth every cent. If there was a 6 star option I would choose it. Firstly, sorry for the lengthy descriptions below. Before we booked this cruise there was little to no information available, so I’ve gone a bit over the top with the detail in case you’re like me and prefer to know what to expect, to be able to plan appropriately. We did the 12 day Antarctica in Depth from Ushuaia departing on 7 Dec 2019. Return internal flights from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia were included in the Scenic quote, but we wanted to have a few days in Ushuaia before the cruise, so Scenic happily refunded our inbound flight portion, and we booked our own one-way flight with Aerolineas Argentinus. I urge you to do this – we did a half day Tierra Del Fuego National Park tour from Ushuaia with Canal Fun and Nature, and really it’s not to be missed. I was also slightly nervous that AA would cancel the inbound flight on the cruise departure day, so wanted to give us a few days buffer. (And ps, the Scenic flight is VERY early in the morning, 7am or so. Ugh, not for me). Ushuaia is a small and walkable town with an interesting history. The “Blue Bus” 1 hr city tour was fun (in a Fawlty Towers kind of way), with steamed up windows and cramped seats, but we had a bit of a laugh, and enjoyed touring through the suburbs and local beauty spots. Embarkation - walking along the Ushuaia pier to Scenic Eclipse was a little bit emotional – we were amongst those impacted by the building delays, so to finally board the ship 12 months on from the original departure date was quite surreal. Boarding was quick (even for us who forgot to attach our luggage tags to the luggage, duh), and we were in our cabin within 15 minutes of arriving – the luggage arrived just a minute later. Cabin - #627 was a Deluxe Verandah (almost the “middle of the middle” of the ship – booked to minimize sea sickness) on the starboard side, and was plenty big enough for the 2 of us. It had a king size bed (like sleeping on a cloud), a little seating area, heaps of storage, usb charging points next to the bed (yes!), dyson hairdryer (whoa!), unlimited free wifi (sometimes with drop outs, but well … Antarctica !), excellent block out blinds, and an adequate verandah with table and two chairs. Everything was fresh and new. This particular cabin had the bed facing “backwards” ie. When lying in bed you’re looking towards the back of the ship, not forwards to what’s coming up in front. I found this a little disconcerting, but not a major drama. Don’t worry about whether port or starboard is better – there will be 360 degrees of stunning scenery, and the ship often turns to cater for the sub, so either side will afford mind-blowing views. The shower-room was well-lit with a storage mirror above the vanity, drawer space, and open shelving to the side. Others have commented on the lack of towel hanging space with only two hooks, but ours also had a large towel rail next to the vanity; perhaps this has since been incorporated. Large pump-packs of Espa toiletries – shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, handwash and moisturiser were provided. I found the shampoo very drying, but perhaps this was due to the overall very dry air in Antarctica. I found the all-in-one vanity unit slightly annoying because I like to put my makeup bag on the vanity itself, but there was no dry space to do this. Just a slight niggle. There is one MAJOR pain in both Verandah and Deluxe Verandah cabin styles – the large “opening outwards” wardrobe doors. We often crashed into each other if the wardrobe door and bathroom door were open at the same time. This was compounded by the swaying of the ship, which often meant being wacked on the head or back trying to get clothes out of the wardrobe (remember you’ll be accessing the wardrobes several times a day going to and from excursions). Successfully making a coffee with the amenities door and fridge door open, crashing into you while holding boiling hot water, was at times a super-human effort! We would most definitely upgrade to a Grand Deluxe cabin with the walk in wardrobe if cruising again on this ship. Yes we would cruise on this ship again. Sliding doors with strong magnets on Scenic Eclipse 2 please. OK that’s the not so good out of the way. In every other aspect, this cruise was SPECTACULAR ! Common areas – luxurious, comfortable, immaculate, spacious. The Discovery Lounge was the go to place at the end of each day to swap photos and have a nightly cocktail (or 4) with other cruisers. The Theatre was very comfortable – a handful of seats though faced a structural column, so get there 10 minutes before the lectures to nab a good seat. Fellow Passengers - There were 199 Passengers on-board – 50% Aussies, 20% each US/UK, with the remainder being a small mix of Canadians, Germans and Asians. There were a handful of very well behaved teenagers on this cruise; it's not a cruise for young children, and there were none on-board. Butler, Cabin Steward and Restaurant Staff – always a smile and nothing too much trouble. When I tried on my Scenic supplied jacket on day one I found it a little snug … a quick call to Steve our Butler, and within one minute (yes one minute !), he was at the door with a larger size. Was he sitting in the coat storage cupboard ? I have no idea, but his response time to any issue was really quite incredible. Restaurant bookings were organised without a hitch, and Richard kept our cabin immaculately clean and complimentary items always stocked. Again, always with a friendly greeting when we met in the hallway. Expedition Team and Excursions – this is where we learnt that a Zodiac Driver is not just a Zodiac Driver! While being transported onshore, more often than not Chris the Marine Biologist, or Sarah the Geomorphologist, or Pepe the Ornithologist would be sharing their knowledge of the local environment or fauna. Simply incredible knowledge and experience has been brought together on this cruise. There were daily enrichment lectures in the theatre (or simulcast on the cabin tv) by the Team. Danny the Expedition Leader was inspirational and seemed to be everywhere at once, keeping an eye on proceedings and making sure Passengers and Crew were safe. Danny honestly deserves an 11/10 (and perhaps cloning?). Kayaking was our favourite excursion – silently gliding amongst icebergs while penguins are porpoising next to (and under) you while the snow drifts gently down … OMG this was the epitome of the million pinch me moments of this cruise. Sub and Helicopter – Having a lower category cabin may have affected our ability to get onto “the list” for these activities. My husband desperately wanted to go on the sub - each day he dutifully checked the list at reception. It wasn’t until the last day that he was offered a ride. We put our names down for the helicopter but never made it on. I didn’t really care either way, but this was our only negative activity feedback to Scenic - the lack of communication around these extra activities and having to keep checking if you were one of ‘the chosen ones’. It got a bit tedious. I expect those booking the higher cabin categories were given preference, though we found out later that other people in the same cabin category were offered 2 helicopter rides, so go figure. A few weeks before we cruised, Scenic emailed an ‘expression of interest’ for these activities - my husband put down the sub, but we didn’t put down the helicopter, and we didn’t attend the helicopter briefing session on the ship - maybe that affected our chances, even though we filled out the helicopter form on the ship twice. So express interest, attend briefing sessions, and fill out the form on the ship - this should give you a better chance. My husband’s sub was around 30 minutes all up and cost USD$295 pp (worth every cent he said). The Helicopter was around USD$795 pp for 20 minutes, Yikes. Others we spoke to raved about it, so probably worth it in the grand scheme of things. Dining – Wow ! Beautifully presented and always fresh – incredible given there are no provisioning stops during the cruise. The Lumiere degustation is something not to be missed – ask your Butler to book it when you arrive. The menu changes every four days, so going back a second or third time is recommended. The Teppanyaki also needs to be booked in advance if you’re interested. You can simply turn up at any of the other restaurants. Our favourites were Kokos Asian Fusion and Azure Café (healthy options always available). Tips (Antarctica Specific) - • If arriving from Australia, stay at least 5 days in Buenos Aires (beautiful city) to settle into the new time zone and to get over the long flights (I suffered jet-lag for the first 4 days). Also 2 days in Ushuaia before the cruise. • The Scenic chartered flights have a 23kg baggage limit. Be careful of Aerolineas Argentinus which has 15kgs. We paid an extra $15 to have 2 x 15kg bags instead. And no, they won’t let you put it all in one 23kg bag, very inflexible. If you receive the opportunity to upgrade to Business Class … DO IT ! We received an email a couple of days before the flight, paid $50USD pp, and were blown away by the spacious comfortable leather seat, plus a 23kg bag limit, score. It was the best $50 I’ve ever spent - Economy was certainly cramped on the way back to Buenos Aires. • During the cruise you’ll cop a bit of spray in the zodiacs, and if the wind is up it’s bitterly cold, so you most definitely need waterproof pants and gloves (both glove liners with smartphone touchpads, plus waterproof ski type gloves). Scenic will supply the double layered waterproof jacket and knee-high rubber boots to keep you snug and stable on the snow. A neck gaiter/warm scarf and beanie/furry hat are also mandatory. The Scenic website now has a comprehensive “Polar Packing List” – check it out. • You can get away with just two sets of thermals – the ship has 3 large (i.e can do two loads of washing at once) commercial self- service washers and dryers, so it is very easy to throw washing in at the end of the day. We washed 3 times during the 12 days and never had an issue with availability in the laundry. • An good SLR camera with a 300mm zoom and sports mode will get you incredible wildlife photos. See penguin shot taken from our cabin verandah. • You don’t need super-dressy clothes, most Passengers were quite casual. My husband brought a nice dress jacket that he never used, and it took up considerable space (and weight!) in his bag. At night it was more smart casual, I wore black trousers and a nice top. The ship stays warm (perhaps a tad too warm at times), so we wore t-shirts and chinos/slacks/jeans during the day. • Pack Kwells or other sea-sickness tablets - the Drake Passage can be rocky (duh). Waves were only 3-4 meters during our 36 hour journeys to/from the Peninsula, but probably 20% of the Passengers were unwell and stayed in their cabins. I took a Kwell as soon as we rounded Cape Horn (about midnight day one) and had no issues from then on. Same for the return trip. It’s smooth sailing for the 9 days in Antarctica. • Take a few moments to sit down with the penguins. There’s a 5 meter exclusion zone for the penguins – but they don’t have to abide by it ! Have your camera ready because the Adelies are very curious and will come right up to you for a good look. The penguins were nesting on their eggs during our visit, which started hatching around 20 December. Would I cruise again on Scenic Eclipse ? Unreservedly YES. Read Less

This was a tailor made holiday to Brazil and ended with the cruise from Bueno Aries to Santiago. The facilities were fine. Food in buffet was excellant but in restaurant I was underwhelmed. Tendering was a shambles. Missed my private pre booked trip because the steward would not allow me off the ship although I explained I needed to leave to meet my tour. Even when I booked a ship tour I had to ask permission to leave to make tour. Also price of tours are now so expensive . Not good value. Entertainment on main stage was O.K. Some shows were excellant ,others were not suitable for the main entertainment. Staff were friendly but there was not many on dockside to help when going ashore for trips. This was my second cruise with Holland America , I chose them because last cruise I was very happy with them. This time I felt the standard had fallen slightly, However I would cruise with them again if cruise itinerary was what I required Read Less

We wanted to experience South America. With one exception (Paraty) the ports of call did not disappoint. The Azamazing evening was a Carneval show in Montevideo. It was well organized and great entertainment. We bought the indulgence package which was well worth the extra money. We also got upgraded to a suite without asking ! That alone should make it five stars but there were some downsides as well. - One of the ‘guest relations’ staff turned out to be anything but. The others were great. - Because we had a lot of OBC, we booked some tours. The ‘gaucho’ tour in Uruguay was disappointing as we went to a dairy and crop farm. Talk about false advertising. - We had butler although he did not really enhance the experience. - The indulgence package included the specialty restaurants. However, it’s not open seating and booking something was very though. The attitude of the person doing the booking did not help. - The app needs work. It’s not updated and does not match the daily program. There is a lot of paper that could be saved...... The food never disappoints and the staff go out of there way to please you. The entertainment was solid and there are plenty of activities. The specialty restaurants are also top notch in food and service as was the Chef’s table. The staff was great in helping us transfer to another room for next cruise. Read Less

Couldn’t pass up this amazing deal to do an 11-day balcony cruise to 3 countries in South America, including 3 days at Carnival in Rio, for only about $950! The Eclipse was recently remodeled, and the rooms and public spaces are beautiful. We’ve done 45 cruises and Guiseppi, at only 26 years old was probably the best cruise director we’ve ever had. He really was made for this job. The captain was one of the most visible we’ve ever seen, attending many events and chatting with everyone. He gave great reports from the bridge twice a day. The theater shows and live music were of extremely high quality. We loved the dancers 4 singers and Cirque-quality acrobatics. Keep that up and we’ll be back lots of times. We love eating in the main dining room and our two waiters were great. Although the quality of the food is down the past few years, Celebrity still has the best dining room food of the standard cruise lines. We appreciated having lobster in the main dining room, even if only one night. Formal nights are gone, for better or worse. Stateroom attendant was very efficient and charming, though they need to replace those horrible do not disturb signs that always end up on the floor. Having great internet really makes a difference and I was more than happy to pay for it. Apple internet center was nice, but should be staffed more often. Beautiful library but need more travel books. The Captains Club host forgot to call us and never sent us info about special events, so we missed all of them. That needs to be much better organized. Would like to have booked a future cruise, but there never seemed to be anyone available, and when there finally was the promotion offered the first few days was over. A lot of folks complained about this and it was a real lost opportunity for the cruise line. Pool, gym and spa were all in the top 10%. The always seemed to be reducing the the buffet just as it got busy, causing long lines. We found it difficult to get a clean table and almost impossible to get a drink from anyone on the buffet level. Port staff was good, but the port terminals in South America were horrible, usually requiring long bus rides just to get from the ship to the terminal and back. Security staff were great. We loved being at Carnival. If you buy tix at right place, you can get decent seats for $19. Don’t pay $600 to get them from the ship. Unfortunately, Rio during Carnival is a difficult place. Everything is boarded up, including every ATM machine, due to roving wild crowds. Everything is closed and most tours are cancelled. We did find a reasonably priced tour to see Impanema, Copacabana, Christ the Redeemer statue and Sugarloaf Mountain. That and going to carnival added up to one wild day. But one day in Rio would have been enough. We never really felt unsafe, but it’s pretty wild vibe if you are over 30; even the locals don’t take their kids out. Unfortunately, the port at São Paulo is 2 hours each way from the city, too far to be practical for an excursion. But Santos port is a nice little city and trying hard to be fun for tourists. We really enjoyed the Coffee Museum, the Pele Museum and the trolley. Montevideo was fun and we did the free walking tour there. Buzios is the St. Bart’s of Brazil, but at 1/2 the price. Don’t pay for expensive ship excursions. Right at the tender port you can get a ship to take you to all 17 beaches with swim and snorkeling stops at three of them and a free drink for $15-20. Buenos Aires is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve seen. Almost as nice as Paris, but cleaner and literally 1/4 the price. Do any of the free walking tours, which can be found on the internet. One of our best cruises ever. We have been on 4 cruises with Celebrity, twice on Reflection and now twice on Eclipse. ANd this cruise was just amazing. The ship was perfect, the crew fantastic, great entertainment and from the top (Captain Leo and CD Gioseppe) to our cabin attendant etc. was top top noch. Food was great in Luminae and BLU and spec. restaurants. To all the hardworking people in the Martini Bar, Luminae, Michaels Club, Guests relation, FUTURE cruises, Murano, Qsine (Le petit chef), pool area, pool bar, entertainment, orchestra Ocean View Cafe, El Bacio Security people, THANK you so much for your hard work. You are the reason that we will continue to book Celebrity cruises. And to see RIO during carnival was fantastic - you really cant imagine how big it is, until you are there and discover it yourself. By the time I got to the actual purchase pickings were slim and I had to agree to have my cabin selected by the Costa staff. I bought the tickets, and only a few days later got to sit down and read reviews of the Fascinosa. I actually told my wife "I'm prepared to eat the lost $2k, I made a mistake, sorry". But what with anticipation and Rio's carnival looming, she persuaded me to go anyway. One's memory tends to gloss over things later that were a big deal at the time, like the strong smell of excrement in the passageway outside our cabin at all times, The faulty toilet flush mechanism that failed 4 times during a 14 day cruise. Or the gritty feeling underfoot that forced me to demand our steward vacuum the carpet. I don't want this to become an encyclopedia but there is no way to pass on the experience without going into detail. The theatre hosted some splendid live productions, with truly gifted performers and a delightful repertoire. Marred by a self promoting "cruise director" who instructed the audience to give top marks for him. Taken tongue in cheek, this might be excusable but the relentless barrage of juvenile, racially toned "humor" had the audience too embarassed not to applaud. The restaurants were passable, portions were appropriate and well presente, service good. Shore excursions with Costa should be avoided in my opinion. Overpriced and "one size fits all" we were happy that we only signed up for one (Uruguay). Being new to cruising, perhaps I appear harsh but I am reporting what I saw. Alas time prevents me from continuing while things are fresh in my mind, but happily this cruise will eventually be forgotten. Read Less

Main reason: few passengers without proper documents having issues with Argentina immigration, delay led to late queuing to the port. Princess staffs at the port did not offer water or snacks during the wait after repeated requests by passengers until 4:30 pm, poor communication among Princess Disembarkation was smooth in Los Angeles Ship (built in 2013) is nice with about 3500 passengers with all amenities Cabin is average compared to other cruise lines, flat TV mounted on the wall to save space, TV menu or guide is easy to navigate Dining: Prefer buffet because it takes up to 2 hours to sit to be served, more Asian food and couple of days with lavish sea food at buffet (lobster, oyster ....), fried noodle available daily. Issue with fruits: Banana often needs to be requested, qiwi was almost as hard as stone Entertainment: Love Princess Production Show even have seen from other ships, some guest performers were excellent, some were average, Princess singers are not up the par to perform as guest performers, sorry Service is very good Excursions: Good Best: Fortunate to see 3 kinds of penguins at Stanley, Falklands Islands, day before and after were not able to due to bad weather Bad: Only one tender dock at Punta Arenas, Chile and not informed by the ship captain, it took 45-90 minutes one way between ship & port, had we been told, some of us would not have gone ashore to ease tender traffic. We had not travelled on Princess Line since our Alaska cruise in 2011. We chose this cruise because of the timing and the itinerary. We found the room exceedingly small, especially the bathroom...smaller than any other ship we have travelled on. The balcony was spacious but of course on this cruise got used less because of the cooler weather. The staff in general was attentive but not really engaging especially the officers. Highlites we our room attendant and our dining room staff. The tender process was tedious and quite cumbersome. Especially with all the early morning tours and mass exodus. Long lines to get back to the ship at every tender port. Entertainment was quite good especially the comedian who kept us in stitches. Ports were interesting with many opportunities and varied excursions. Ship was clean and fairly well maintained although somewhat difficult to navigate with washrooms hard to find at times. Con:Transfer from airport to the dock was a little different. We where told by Celebrity representative that he was instructed by Celebrity to keep our group on the bus for 1 hour so other people can embark on the ship. The only problem we where in aqua class and we where having a special lunch in the main dinning room which was over when we embark on the ship. Embarkation and disembarkation was horrible. During embarkation they was certain lines for priority check in. They decide to combine all lines together. What a joke. Next joke was the gang way entrance. The gang way was a 4 story scaffolding entrance. Very difficult for slightly or fully handicap people. Disembarkation was the same joke. This also occurred at some ports of call. What a disgrace. Next the Ship needs updating. Finally there is NO DRESS CODE after 6 PM in the main dining room. After 2 weeks of dining in the main restaurant people come into the restaurant with baseball caps, tee shirts, shorts. Celebrity has already dropped dress code no jeans. Celebrity Cruises have fallen a few notches from a Premium cruise line. Read Less

We recently completed our first cruise on Celebrity Eclipse in a Royal Suite on the South America Holiday cruise. This will be a long and detailed review for those who might be curious about how RCCL suite experience compare to Celebrity. We are a couple with an elementary school aged child and have cruised on Disney, Princess and Royal Caribbean suites in the past. We had high expectations from the Celebrity suite experience based on online reviews. Our most recent cruise prior to Eclipse was in a Star class suite on RCCL Ovation of the Seas where we had fabulous service and loved our Genie. Our cruise journey started on the wrong foot with a very poor embarkation experience. We arrived at the Buenos Aires port around 4 pm and was greeted by port employee who checked in our luggage. Then she told us to go upstairs in the port building to the priority check in line for suite guests. However, when we went upstairs, we couldn’t see any line marked as the priority line and the employee in charge there told us we needed to go through the main line which was very long. Finally after waiting in the main line for what seemed like forever with, we bit the bullet and made an expensive international call to the Celebrity Shoreside concierge in Miami and was able to expedite our embarkation. After all this embarkation hassle, we were relieved to be finally on board but our relief was short lived. When we got to our room, we found that one of our hard shell suitcases was badly cracked during delivery. Our butler and the onboard concierge said the suitcase could be fixed on board but our suitcase came back with what appeared to be a superficial hot glue application which didn’t look sturdy. When we expressed concern that the suitcase fix was unlikely to hold together on the way back, our concierge offered to either give us $50 credit or send a new suitcase. We didn’t want to waste our port days shopping for a new suitcase so we asked for their replacement which turned out to be a fairly cheap, soft sided suitcase. On RCCL, we did not experience any of these embarkation issues. On the service front, the Luminae and other restaurant employees were wonderful but we were deeply disappointed with our butler. Though he did a decent job keeping the cabin tidy and clean, he was very poor at other aspects of his job. He didn’t bring us evening appetizers unless we asked for them and one time when we asked for tea sandwiches to be delivered he told us “ you can also get them at Michael’s yourself”. Another time when he was late delivering our room service breakfast on a port day where we had an early tour, he said he had too many room service orders and didn’t seem apologetic. In addition, we have requested a cake to be delivered to our room via shoreside concierge on New Year’s Eve which never showed up. Overall the butler service fell very short of the Genie service we received on Royal Caribbean. Another very disappointing aspect of our cruise was the poor communication from the captain about the Cape Horn itinerary. The main reason why we were on this cruise was to sail Straits of Magellan and Cape Horn. Though the Cape Horn navigation was nicely narrated, the Straits of Magellan cruising took place on January 1st, a day earlier than announced in the Celebrity dailies and cruise itinerary. We understand that itinerary changes can occur during a cruise but in this case there was no announcement by captain or his officers so we passed the Strait of Magellan without knowing where we were and without any narration of the historic sites we were sailing by. The navigation channel on the TV was also no help and didn’t have any updates. To add insult to injury, a similar itinerary changed happened without any communication for the Chilean Fjords portion of the cruise and we didn’t see the glaciers or the fjords as they were described in the Celebrity Dailies. On RCCL, there were digital screens everywhere that provided updates from the captain and showed the ship’s position in great detail so we always knew where we were. Celebrity Eclipse did live up to our expectations in a few areas. We really enjoyed the quality of food across all outlets and especially the quality of baked goods were exceptional. This is one area Celebrity definitely surpassed RCCL. Our kudos to to all the chefs on board! Theatre entertainment was great and appropriate for all ages. We also thought the photographers on board did an outstanding job. Will we sail Celebrity again ? Possibly, but it certainly won’t be at the top of our list. Read Less

Their labor was crucial in my father in laws still alive. Anyway the rest of the experiance was not very good due to the circumstances. Special thanks to the kids club. They were amazing My son salomon had a very nice time and had a lot of freibds and ciuld spend mist if his time tehre while we were busy with the medical issue. I accidentally chose this cruise line. I should have read the reviews more. The service on the ship was hit and miss. The food was lukewarm to cold in the main dining room. The stateroom itself was very worn, scratched and chipped in so many places of the room, let alone the scratch sheets. I was informed by the activities director that Celebrity did not budget for entertainment. This is a shop on the ship's only - cruise line. Had I know that I would not have booked myself with this line. The ship itself had a few pretty areas to look at. There were no entertainment options or activities scheduled and we were on the boat for a miserable 7 days. The information on the ports we were going to was non-existent. I would not recommend this line to anyone. There are way better lines out there, please research your line. Read Less

Was going to South America ports we wanted to see. Production shows were some of the best we have seen in 35 cruises. The cast gives 110% every minute of the shows. You won't think it possible to move at that fast a pace for a full hour, but they do, and they will be waiting for you at the entrance to the theater after the show to greet you. The cruise director doesn't have the staff do all the work, he will sweat with you daily out on the deck. Most involved director we have ever had. About half the guest performers were worth seeing, and with the exception of a piano player /singer with little talent and a need to talk to staff rather than preform, the music on board was great especially blind vinyl, encourage Amy to sing, and the jazz trio. I wanted to see Christ the Redeemer for my 75th birthday. Being in Rio for Carnival was certainly a bonus. While we were also in Buenos Aires and Uraguay, this was the focus of our 14 day cruise. The food was excellent, the passengers were from a variety of countries and the entertainment was good. Our cabin with a veranda was very nice and located mid-ship. The casino and the dealers were very professional and entertaining. The Apple classes on board were excellent and I gained a plethora of new and interesting tips and programs. I visited the spa and had an amazing pedicure and manicure and a great conversation with the lady performing these services. We were able to meet and interact with a number of the crew who were informative and helpful. Our stateroom attendant did an excellent job of keeping our room neat and clean, He was there twice a day and made sure everything was "ship shape". An excellent ship cruise and staff. Read Less

Disembarkation much better in San Antonio-however the port is very industrial and there is NOTHING to see/do in this very economically depressed city. Have to rely on transportation for the 1.5 HR ride into SCL to board flight. SCL airport very disorganized, little English spoken, poor signage. Emerald dated, in dire need of upgrade in furnishing, rethinking of need for lounges and very amateurish shows. Very noticeable downgrade in quality and variety of food choices. Did not like the constant up selling of services and dining. Food was "pre-cooked" and reheated for service...cold toast, cold fries, cold bacon, lobster cold?! And mushy? Shore excursions poorly organized and lacked value for $. Crowded and limited time at sights. Would book with on shore tours, but operators lacked command of English. Better selections with Expedia shore excursions. Would travel to SA again, however NOT on Princess. Captain would not even shake hands on the welcome cocktail reception, did not feel our loyalty was valued?! I would like to describe our (my wife and me) cruise experience in some details. I hope it helps people to select, or not, this specific cruise itinerary, cruise ship and even the cruise line for future trips. Just a trip overview, we booked a veranda cabin, deck 8, in the Celebrity Infinity, for the Buenos Aires > Puerto Madryn > Ushuaia > Antartica (Paradise Bay and Elephant Island) > Falkland Island > Montevideo > Buenos Aires itinerary. It was a somewhat expensive itinerary if compared to other cruises in the region, so our expectations were high. We planned this trip for almost a year. The cruise left Buenos Aires on 21th Jan 2018. About a week before the departure date we received an email from Celebrity Cruises informing the Puerto Madryn stop was canceled. Copy and pasting their own email message: "Due to a technical issue with the ship’s propulsion system, as a precaution, we will have to reduce our maximum speed by a few knots. We assure you, there is no safety issue with the vessel; however, due to the speed reduction, we have to modify our itinerary. Some ports of call will have shortened visit times, while some will have more time. We also had to remove our visit to Puerto Madryn, Argentina from the itinerary. Due to the cancellation of this port of call, we are issuing each guest a refund in the amount equal to one day of your vacation." My wife and I planned to dive in Puerto Madryn with the sea lions. All our scuba gear was already packed to go and the dive package reserved at a local PADI agent. You can imagine our frustration... We embarked on the 21th as planned. About Celebrity Infinity, despite some review we read, it is not falling apart. It is indeed an old ship, somewhat worn out. Stained carpets, peeling paint, scratches here and there are visible, but we consider those minor things. I noticed, however, some other not so minor problems, like leaking plumbing in several places (that left wet spots on the carpets), air conditioning failures (that left some friends in internal rooms overheating), external doors hard to open/close, and massive temperature changes in the hot/cold water supplies. There were also some smaller annoyances in our stateroom, like loose tiles in the bathroom floor and leaks in the shower hoses. We usually ignore these small things, but as you see ahead, events stack up. About the food, it was nice and plentiful. All restaurants we went to were nice. Particularly I would say that some dish on the main dining room, Trelis, was somewhat small (especially the ones with expensive ingredients) and with unexpected component mixes, but this is a matter of taste. The buffet on Deck 11 always had food for any taste. About the entertaining, it was ok. Some shows were really nice while some other were somewhere below passable. The daily activities were plenty, somewhat focused on luxury activities (like art auctions, jewelry sales, Fabergé egg showcase and sales, liquor tastings, and so one). It perhaps makes sense for the overall target audience, mostly senior guests. One of the highlights of this cruise was the presentations from the destination experts. The presentations were really interesting and made de experience must more enjoyable and immersive. The presentation themes included wildlife identification and behavior, destination highlights, geographic features, historical events and even a recent rescue mission to Antartica from the Argentinian navy. There was much effort to provide the same presentations in English and Spanish, so most people would benefit and enjoy all given information. It is also important to note the crew was always friendly and eager to help. Our stateroom attendant and some other personnel we had more contact with during the cruise were very professional and cordial. After few days on the sea, we reached Ushuaia. We visited Escondido/Fasano lake and the experience was really memorable. Since we did not stop at Puerto Madryn we were able to stay in Ushuaia for a few more hours. We headed to Antartica, our main and most anticipated destination. The weather was really good during our stay and the visibility was great. We had the luck to get some snow while entering Paradise Bay. It was quite a spectacle. It is really difficult to describe in words the beauty we saw. While it looks a desolated region, it is full of life. We could see whales, penguins, many different types of birds. The icebergs are also a show apart, featuring beautiful shapes, textures, and colors. We also stopped at Elephant Island, the second sightseeing place. After Elephant Island, when heading back to Falkland Island, a major storm formed in our way and the captain had to deviate our corse, missing Falkland port of call. His decision was the correct one due to the bad weather, however, no one was able to explain why the next port of call wasn't changed to Puerto Madryn. Apparently, the route would be even safer than going straight to Montevideo and, we had the time since Falkland stop was completely skipped. It was really strange and until now I got no answer from Celebrity guest relations about this. On the memo we received in our stateroom: "We would like to inform you that our call to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands, has been canceled, due to adverse weather and high winds. (...) Tomorrow, January 31th, the Celebrity Infinity will be at sea, since weather conditions and distance to alternative ports will not allow us to call an alternative port. In an effort to avoid the rough seas, we are traveling directly to Montevideo through an alternative route, as your safety is our top priority. We will be arriving in Montevideo at 6:00 am on February 3rd" We understood the situation and weather changes are a risk involved in all Cruises, however, this port miss and strange deviation from Puerto Madryn just stacked up on our frustration pile. We then faced many days at sea, finally arriving at Montevideo. It was a nice stop, however, I (and many other guests I spoke with) would rather stop in other ports then in Montevideo. Montevideo is really close to Buenos Aires and you can easily go by car, bus or even boat in a couple hours. Puerto Madryn and Falkland Island, on another hand, are much harder and expensive to get to. In the end, the trip left really good memories about Antartica sightseeing experience and a bitter taste for itinerary changes and other smaller annoyances. We felt only half of the trip was actually delivered since we could not stop at Puerto Madryn and Falkland Island. Looking in retrospect, if we could changes things, we would rather flight straight to Ushuaia and book a cruise on a smaller ship just to experience Antartica. Read Less

We do not typically cruise, but chose this vacation SOLELY because of the itinerary. The Good: The staff are amazing. Food and drinks are excellent and plentiful. Antarctica is absolutely spectacular. The Juanico Winery excursion in Montevideo was phenomenal (Karla our guide was amazing). I can't really comment on the other excursions because it is really the only full port of call we had. The Bad: The itinerary that was advertised was: Buenos Aires - Ushuaia - Cape Horn - Antarctica - Falklands - Puerto Maderyn - Montevideo. The main reasons we chose this cruise were to see Ushuaia, Antarctica and penguins. A few days before we were set to sail, we received an email from Celebrity stating that the ship had propulsion system issues and would have to travel at a lower speed and they were removing Puerto Maderyn (best place to see penguins) from the itinerary, and arriving in Ushuaia 5 hours late. This affected 2 of the reasons for going but we figured we would go because seeing antarctica was too important. The ship moved so slow that at times it felt like you could swim faster. We ended up arriving in Ushuaia at 5pm instead of 9am, effectively completely ruining all excursions and plans. To make up for this the crew stated we would be staying there until 2am (instead of 9pm) as if that is some sort of advantage. They cancelled the stop at Port Stanley because of weather. Several passengers inquired why we could reroute to Puerto Maderyn as originally planned since we were missing the Falklands. Guest relations were arrogant and unhelpful and just stated they weren't navigational experts. They ignored everything you were saying and just something about weather. There went our last chance to see penguins. Essentially we spent about 5 hours on land (Ushuaia) in 13 days. It was terrible. While the visit to Montevideo winery was nice, if they were adjusting the itinerary it would have been a much better option to remove than Puerto Maderyn or shortening our visit to Ushuaia. The Ugly The attitudes of the guest relations manager and Director were awful. They were condescending and disrespectful. The propulsion system had broken weeks before our cruise and they informed us a few days before to ensure that they made their sales with the full itinerary shown. We found out on the ship that the Montevideo port was left in because it was significantly cheaper to restock and refuel in Uruguay than Buenos Aires. We also found out that the decision to remove Port Stanley was made far earlier than any weather set in. Overall we would never sail Celebrity again. The company clearly has a pattern of calculated theft. They knew they couldn't make all the ports, they knew that the chances of going to Port Stanley were low and did not care whatsoever. If you want to be treated like a moron and cheated like a fool book a vacation with Celebrity. Read Less

The itinerary on Celebrity Infinity was excellent: Buenos Aires to Ushuaia to Cape Horn to Antarctica to Port Stanley, Falkland’s, to Puerto Madryn to Montevideo and back to Buenos Aires. The only issue with it was the first [boring] 3 days at sea, but we skipped them by flying to Ushuaia directly. (Yet, Celebrity, of course, not only issues no refund for those 3 days, but charges a fee to allow you to embark in a different port. The funny part of that was a call from them on the day of the departure with a question of why we are not on the ship. Despite the fee charged, they did not bother to communicate our embarkation exclusion to the vessel!) There's more. Unfortunately, a week before sailing, Celebrity sent an email that they have a problem with the ship’s propulsion system, as such they won’t have sufficient speed and will have to cancel our visit to Puerto Madryn. It was very bad news, but at least they promised to refund one day as an excuse; not a fair exchange of course but something. (Later on the ship, during our Inside Access Tour, we of course asked in the mechanical room what the problem they have with the propulsion system, but the crew politely did not give an answer.) The worst part came later. They suddenly cancelled Port Stanley as well. This time it was “for safety reasons”, saying that the weather is too bad there, that it’s a strong wind of 55-80 kph and getting to the shores is not possible. Alas, there is a big problem with this statement. First of all, the crew already knew and many people told us two days before that we won’t go to Port Stanley; that's before there was any reliable weather information. Also, our sailing through Drake Passage was extremely smooth. We were really lucky with the weather! Then at 5 AM on the morning we were supposed to sail to Port Stanley I checked the weather there and it was …sunny with 50 kph wind indeed but also CALMING to 25 kph during the day. Nonetheless, “for our safety” we did not go there. Of course, people attacked all officers with tons of questions. The main one being why not visit Puerto Madryn or another port in Argentina instead. We got no answer. I also had an opportunity to ask the captain personally on the real reason for skipping Stanley. The answer was, “I’m the captain, I know better.” So, it looks like Celebrity Infinity either has a big technical problem with the vessel (and then it’s a real safety issue!) or saves money on port fees, etc., maximizing their profits. Either way, my advice is to never use this company. They have no respect for their customers, easily ruining vacations for 2000+ people. Read Less

This was our 18th cruise on Princess. We had a good time, because of the staff and the ports but were disappointed in the food. The food never seems to change - and this time in the dining room, even sitting with 6 - 8 people for dinner there were never more than 3 pads of butter in the dishes. We were told it was because it looked better - really? The little silver bowl looked sadly empty. You had to ask for more butter. I don't mind them saving money on the butter but at least put 1 pad of butter on the table for each person sitting at the table. Tried all the pay for restaurants and have to admit I hated Curtis Stone. I was excited to try it since he now has a vegetarian menu - Did not like the menu at all. Hubby did enjoy the lamb in the final course. Crown Grill as always is nice for my hubby, but since I am Vegetarian - there is really no special dish for me to order - they just get me a meal from the main dining room, this is really not worth $29 to me. (but I go so Hubby gets his steak). The Salty Dog which was only $12 per person was surprisingly good, actually my favorite of all the pay for restaurants. We hardly ever eat at the buffet so can't really comment on this, we did order breakfast in our cabin on the days we were off on an early excursion, which always came promptly! Kuddos to the staff! Ok, enough complains, had a nice time on this 14 day cruise and loved the itinerary. Our main goal was to sail around Cape Horn - mission accomplished - the weather was nice and there were hardly any waves. We also wanted to see the Falklands, this is a port that really is hard to get to, but we were successful and took the 7 hour Jeep tour - amazing, highly recommend!! The ship was clean and the beds were comfortable. We had Cabin D709, a mini suite, which was great - I even used the bathtub. Balcony was large enough for a little table and two chairs. It was a little to cold to sit out and read most of the days, but we enjoyed getting out and taking pictures of Amelia Glaciers. Went to several shows and found them entertaining - I usually don't even bother but we had friends traveling with us , and they enjoy going to the shows. Only went to the casino 2 times and lost $40. Big spender here!!! Enjoyed a few drinks at Crooners and watched people dance at the little dance floor in the bar. The music seems to be getting louder all the time. The one really bad experience we had was disembarkation - it was really badly planned. We had tickets to get off first thing - however the suitcases came off the ship haphazardly. People were standing around waiting for a long time - and even when the suitcases came down we were not able to take them until the dogs sniffed the luggage. Sometimes I just have to wonder how stupid people really are - packing oranges in the suitcases? Really, suitcases were being searched and it really slowed things down. At this time we have no upcoming cruises planned. We would travel with Princess again mainly because we now have elite status and the perks are great - Free laundry, free minutes for the internet just to mention a few.... Read Less

We selected this cruise because we had never been to any South American countries and wanted the positive experiences and appreciations that travel to new destinations can provide. The cruise offered a nice balance of port calls vs sea days, although the only minus was that two port calls were to Montivedeo and Ushuaia on public holidays and both were “closed” (except for tourist shops). Perhaps with planning, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day could have been ‘at sea’ so we could have experienced the two port calls when fully working. Not a big issue though. Embarkation: We were in Concierge class and embarkation was a quick and smooth experience. I am in constant awe how Celebrity turns the ship around so quickly, although note that the staff have very long days on embarkation day. Cabin: We had a GREAT cabin steward ever - Richard. Our veranda cabin was kept spotless. He didn't bother us when the do not disturb sign was on but managed to clean it when we were out. He was professional, courteous and very efficient. Activities: There was plenty of activities for all tastes and ages- enough to keep busy. I enjoyed the lectures but some were way too early - 9 am! It would have been cool to have the lecture on the night sky up on the rooftop terrace in the evening. We participated in a few activities, We did the watercolour painting workshop with Ronnie - a bit too rushed but I enjoyed it. We used the gym every day - very nice but crowded. . Well equipped and everyone using it was very considerate. Carlo was a great gym director and was generous with his advice and help. Dining: We had select dining although needs to pre-book an evening dining time due to the high demand and late dining habits of the Latino guests 1800 of the 2100 or so guest total. The food and service was generally fine although on a 15 night passage, the Trellis menu was becoming tired and at times repetitive. But hats off to the staff who turned around such a large clientele night after night. hit or miss. We dined at Tuscan Grill on New Year’s Eve - attentive service, flavoursome food - just too much of it. Our waiter did a great job managing all of us. Of the Trellis staff, the standouts were Ali on, Shinde, Schubert, Asep. All are fantastic people, friendly without being obsequious, professional and genuinely nice. They made dining in the Trellis a “ look forward to” experience. Al Bacio. Without doubt, Cafe Al Bacio was our favourite place. From the 0700 hrs first coffee and Berlina’s ( in our PJs! - no one cared!!!) throughout the day and night. The staff made this experience the best and our heartfelt thanks to Daniela, Chitra, Lucky, Melissa and the baristas. Also Taz across the way in the Gelatoria/ Cocktail bar. All these fantastic Ambassadors should be praised the the Celebrity Board of Directors as great ambassadors of the company. Down Side. Like most long duration activities, there are likely to be downsides. For us, it was the large number of Latino teens and children who were rude, obnoxious and behaved in a self entitled manner ( where actually none existed). They would be demanding and ungrateful to staff, queue jump, be pushy and intolerant. Worst, they often roamed and partied in the corridors up to 0400 hrs each night being thoroughly noisey and totally inconsiderate of sleeping guests. Complaints to them and Celebrity fell on deaf ears. There was no evidence that their parents had any influence on these miscreants and actuall, we experienced some parents who led by example. They should be thoroughly ashamed, but I guess that’s their culture and breeding. WARNING. I recommend that future guests avoid the South American cruises when Latin school holidays are on. Final Thoughts: You will encounter glitches when travelling, but if you don't make the best of it, then you will ruin your vacation. Putting the down-side of Latino boorish behaviour to the side, on balance the cruise was everything we hoped for. I wanted to see South America and I had been pleased with previous Celebrity cruises. I did not expect total mayhem. Anytime dining meant waiting 1/2 to 1 1/2 hours to be seated because they were reserving too many unoccupied tables for large families. Children running on stage during performances. When we boarded, there was an error. Over the next 3 days, I had to be at the main desk 4 times. Because of the long lines and the many errors for other passengers, this meant over 3 hours of my vacation time wasted to correct the original error otherwise I would not have been able to get on and off the ship. They never fully corrected the benefits that I was due to my having been on 4 previous Celebrity cruises. In order to get a table, we had to eat at 6:30. The person seating us had a hard time finding our table because everything had been rearranged to accommodate the large families. Some of the waitstaff were so flustered that it was difficult for them to get the proper food to our table. When it finally came to us, it was not always cooked properly. The sushi restaurant ran out of items on the third day of the cruise. This specialty restaurant was overtaxed and the food was no better than your corner home town restaurant. I wonder how they justify charging extra for this. The tours would come back at the same time. If you were not an Aqua or Suite or Concierge class passenger and the ship was tendered, you would have to wait over an hour in line to get back on board. The cruise staff was flustered because many of the parents did not care to supervise their children and they were scared to upset the parents. Activities were missed because of bad communication.
