We have been to the Viking River. We are happy with the cruising along the River Danube. The cabin is small, the entertainment is OK, could be better - mainly piano playing, One time the cruise director Dawn gave a nice concert, a Sparano solo -the only best concert. Another time a team of two GERMAN musicians playing the accordion. Food is nutrition with limited choice in the menu. The ship Viking Tor is very new. Port excursion consists of a lot of walking. Viking puts out lots of optional excursions. Viking river cruise does not welcome children, probably person more than 21 cannot drink any alcoholic beverage, also there is no children's program in the ship. Viking Cruise company gives out lots of incentive for a passenger to return for another cruise in the future, like $200 onboard credit if returning within 2 years. I probably would go back. I enjoy the river cruises over the ocean cruises. The service & staff are excellent, very friendly. The ports & shore excursions are excellent & well organized. the reasons-smaller ship, more intimate atmosphere, more personal care, less line up for everything, wine & drink is included during mealtime, no formal wear ( makes it easier to pack.), we get to go ashore every day, the ship disembarks right in the city center. I had extensively researched river cruises to determine if there would be one right for my husband and me. We are both 54 and, quite honestly, fairly active people. Although I was aware the average age was much higher, the draw for me was the ability to see several countries without the hassle of packing and unpacking in different cities. I wanted something easy that didn’t require much thought. Even though I had read about the low and high water levels, and the possibility of there being some itinerary changes along the way, I still chose to book with Viking. There are many negative reviews regarding these itinerary changes but it often appears that people have not done their research ahead of time. If you know the possibility exists, you’re more apt to be able to “go with the flow” so to speak. In our family, our motto has always been, “it’s not really an adventure until you make your first u-turn”. As a result, we tend to fall in the “go with the flow” kind of crowd. You can probably guess that this particular cruise required us to go with the flow. We chose the Romantic Danube cruise from Budapest to Nuremberg. After a great trip from Budapest to Passau, we received the one of the worst possible outcomes due to low water levels - not that we would be packing up and transferring to another ship, but that there were no remaining Viking ships available to transfer to further up the river. The last Viking ship had made it through the day before, otherwise we could have traded with them. As a result, at Passau, our boat was docked in a not so picturesque location for the last couple of days – in fact there were 3 Viking ships docked side by side. We were then transported each day to the last remaining excursion points – Regensburg and Nuremberg (Viking actually switched these two days – Nuremberg and then Regensburg). Some chose to stay behind and were allowed to return to Passau to spend the day. We travelled 3 hours by coach to Nuremberg. I enjoyed the scenery and my husband enjoyed the nap. Unfortunately, our day was shortened but we enjoyed lunch followed by the World War II excursion. We missed out on walking around Nuremberg but enjoyed the excursion. Two couples chose to end the cruise at that time – one due to health concerns with the traveling, one because “we paid for a river cruise”. Believe me, we were privy to this couple’s unhappiness as we returned to Passau. Honestly, I’d do this again even if I knew how the last couple days would go. I would have booked the pre-extension in Budapest. Coming from Washington state, we did not arrive until 6:00 pm, just in time for the port talk and dinner. We missed out on exploring Budapest as the Panoramic Budapest tour was a drive through both sides on a Saturday morning - no traffic to slow us down - to view the buildings or take in one of the thermal baths. We enjoyed the Vienna "Up Close and Personal" excursion that was later added, allowing us to learn how to use the subway so we could continue to explore after the tour and return easily to the ship.We booked several optional excursions (1)The Heurigan Dinner was fun especially given the company we had to spend it with. (2) The Biking Tour at Krems to Durnstein and back was our favorite excursion, biking through vineyards and small towns and allowing us to explore the charming village of Durnstein. (3) Bavarian Beerfest - more than we expected, this was held on a farm where we received a tour of the facilities, ending with the tapping of the keg, pretzels, meats, spreads, and entertainment; (4) World War II - toured Courtroom 600 and then traveled to Zeppelin Field and the Documentation Center Nazi Party Rallying Grounds Museum- just wish we had had more time. We did add the post extension to Prague. Highly recommend. We loved both the Panoramic Prague and Kutna Hora excursions. Lots and lots of time to explore. Just be sure to bring super comfy shoes! We exchanged information with some wonderful people (meeting them and learning about their personal travels was one of the best parts of the trip) and saw some truly beautiful places. No regrets! Firstly I would like to say this is one of the best holidays we have been on. The staff, ship and destinations were exactly as described and totally met our expectations. The down side was that a few days before we left we received an email to say that part way through our sail we may have to disembark due to low water of the Danube. We weren’t over the moon about the prospect of changing ships but as I had already done some research on the cruises before we booked I understood that this could happen should water levels drop. On day four we arrived in Passau expecting to spend the morning in the City and return to the ship to set sail at 3pm. On our return at lunch we received an announcement that we wouldn’t be sailing until at least 6pm and that they would keep us informed. The outcome is that a decision was not made by Viking until it was too late to carry on our journey on the river - the water levels were now too low! Mistakes happen but when you have already been told that you might have to change ship I will never understand why they back tracked and we didn’t have an option to change with the sister ship sailing towards us. When we we told - we were so disappointed as I personally had never felt so relaxed on holiday. For the remaining part of the holiday we were coached to Nuremberg & Regensburg (Nuremberg is a 6 hour round trip) - we finished the holiday exhausted. Would I do a river cruise again? Absolutely but would choose to go in May and be constantly checking river levels. Viking you were spot on with many things and have amazing ships & staff but when you have booked a cruise with a French balcony you expect to cruise and also have a lovely view ... our view for three days was of the other boats docked in the same area - we had lost any privacy & stunning views. Whoever was responsible for making the decisions on this particular sailing should put themselves in the customers place and invest a lot of money on a holiday to end up on a coach tour - such a shame. We had such a remarkable experience on our first Viking tour on the Seine, Paris to Normandy. We were delighted to have the opportunity to tour an area of Europe that was new to us. Arriving in Budapest we were met at the airport and transported with ease to the boat. Like so many others in 2015, we had to disembark and board another boat due to the low water level of the Danube. So we experienced two boats, the Var and the Tor. The crew made this transition seamless, our only chore was a few moments of packing and unpacking. Viking more than made up for the unavoidable inconvenience by providing extra perks. Both boats were clean and comfortable, the staff exceptional. The food was nicely presented and reflected the local cuisine. The local tour guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. The Viking crew were equally helpful. The daily briefings and programs were educational and entertaining. Disembarkation was easy though there was some confusion at the Nuremberg airport when so many of us arrived at such a small facility before the airport was fully staffed. In hindsight I would have liked a bit more time in Budapest and Vienna, the tours were whirlwind. It would have also been nice if we could have simply walked from the boat directly into the cities and towns more often than not. Viking has no control over this as it is the nature of the docking locations. As a result there seemed to be more bus time than the Seine trip. Overall, it was a wonderful trip and we have recommended it to several friends. Read Less

This was our first cruise and also our 40th wedding anniversary. The Viking personnel were amazing, and the service exceptional. Most of the land tours were excellent- with great guides. Food and service were fantastic. The weather was overcast and rainy for the entire week, but the crew made the trip very special despite the weather. The rooftop seating was closed for at least half the trip- so exercise in the form of walking was limited. These are not huge ships, although they are very comfortable. The passenger totals are very reasonable - making it possible to recognize almost everyone on board, as well as almost all of the crew. Our cabin was extremely comfortable and was cleaned everytime we left the cabin. the thoughtfulness of the crew was exemplary. I travel with lot is books, and found several Viking bookmarks kindly placed by my reading stand. Meals were served promptly and beautifully- with wine, etc available constantly. The shipboard lectures were very informative and entertaining, too. The attitude of the crew was wonderful. They seemed to enjoy their jobs and the opportunities they had. This was a once in a lifetime trip for us and we appreciated the attentive staff. The Danube River levels were low at the time of our trip, but fortunately we just got by in terms of passage. Only once did the ship move ahead, and we caught up by tour bus, when the levels were low. Our veranda suite was spacious ,comfortable and clean. Everything was in perfect working order. I enjoyed the sitting area and was thankful that we had it. Read Less

KLM was singularly unhelpful at every turn: wrong gates posted, cancelled flights, delayed flights, misconnections. We missed Budapest altogether. No advance warning by Viking of the possibility of a ship swap (which had happened several times before in the season). However, the staff on TOR were all outstanding. Dining room man knew everyone's name by the end of the first day. They couldn't do enough for us. The food was excellent, every meal. The guides for the local tours were exceptional, each and every one, especially in Passau. The VAR wasn't quite as good, but still fine. We have heard back already from Viking about the mishaps along the way and we will probably accept their offer of another cruise with a discount. Read Less

The ship was clean and we were more than comfortable in our cabin. The food was very good and prepared to our liking. The staff and crew members were very friendly and helpful. Even though we had to change ships because of water level on the Danube, it was no problem and the staff made it as easy as possible. Looking forward to another river cruise in the near future. Our cruise along the Danube River from Budapest to Nuremberg was wonderful! The ship was beautiful and well staffed. All the excursions were interesting, with very talented and knowledgeable guides. The buses for the outings were very comfortable. And the food onboard the ship was excellent! However, it was disappointing that we had to do a ship swap after the third day of sailing because of low water levels on the river. That, of course, was not the fault of Viking. They, in fact, were quite prepared for this situation. The swap was done relatively painlessly and we boarded a 'sister' ship that was identical to the one we had left. We missed our original crew, however, who were so friendly and caring. Our cruise director and concierge switched ships with us and that was a blessing! They were WONDERFUL!! They certainly earned their salaries and carried out their duties with humor and friendliness. All of our transports worked smoothly. Disembarkation was very well organized. We were very pleased with the entire trip. Read Less
