8 days was the first consideration with the second being the area covered and town visited. EVERYTHING about the cruise was outstanding from the guy rowing the garbage to the bins, the service, entertainment and overall friendly and relaxing atmosphere. HOWEVER, the costly tour to Salzburg was a rip off. It took hours there and hours back. There was 1 restroom stop for multiple buses ... of several lines...and ONE bathroom! Additionally, we were dropped off on one side of town...which seemed to be normal...but returned to the same location...which was not normal. Thus travelling the same route twice! The lunch was nice but way too long and did not leave enough time to explore Salzburg or see the castle on the mountain. This was very disappointing. The food service was amazing and it was even more amazing when we toured the kitchen and realized what was produced in such a small space. We have recommended Viking to numerous friends and have some sailing now and others in 2018. We have warned them about optional tours and to check out just how much travel time to arrive and return is required. We took the post tour to Prague. Prague is beautiful and we will go back. However, the hotel Viking people were of little or no help. Our introduction to Prague was 20 minutes in the hot sun with a walk across the street, through a small shopping center and a point at the transportation stop. When we asked them questions we were told your ship should have covered that with you. We asked for a non-smoking room and were given a smoking room. When we complained we were told it WAS a non- smoking room...at which time...we handed them the ashtrays we found in the room. They put a can of air freshener in the room and did not offer to move us. We were very disappointed, but having faith in Viking, we are doing a pre-trip in November in Amsterdam before embarking on our Amsterdam to Basel cruise. The first cruise we were 4 in our party, there are now 6 in our party. Read Less

This was the first cruise for my husband and my first on a river cruise. He was most pleasantly surprised on how much room there was on the boat and in the cabin. Additionally, he was worried that he could not keep up with the pace of activities or enjoy the volume of food offered in the dining spaces. Rather both were not issues. In fact, he added two optional programs at the desk and enjoyed all of them. The guides were informative, the pace was great and there was always time to visit on your own in the different cities. They were also helpful if someone forgot their headphones or needed directions to a particular store or site to visit. (Actually a time for Schnecken and Caffe, per Viennese custom.) We both enjoyed the food and programs on the boat as well, with the Program Director giving information about each stop and suggestions for places to visit when in the cities. I have cruised before, but this was one of the best as far as friendliness from the staff and the other passengers. Not being assigned to a particular table allowed for more integration with passengers, whether at meals or on the buses. Overall, we have spoken very highly of our cruise experience with Viking and look forward to traveling with you again. Read Less

Previous cruise was the Rhine. The Viking experience on that cruise led us to book the Danube. Once again, Viking provided exceptional food and cultural and historical perspectives and experiences. On board service was, as usual, without peer. A short time with Viking and the passengers and crew become a family. The shore guides were extremely knowledgeable and accomodating. Their walking lectures gave thorough insight into the unique people, their historical culture and the evolution to today's modern social and political environment. Additional tours were of high value. Onboard lectures were extremely interesting and enhanced one's knowledge of each area, its cultures, and its history. The late fall cruise provided moderate temperatures, only one morning of light rain, and spectacular foliage. Viking provided a good mix of escorted tour time, on shore leisure time, optional shore tours, coupled with daylight cruise times during the most interesting portions of the river. We will be on Viking again in November 2017. Read Less

When you came in from tours staff was there to meet you with a small fruit drink, cool towel or cookie. Read Less

My mother who is 86 years old, has been wanting to go on a Viking River cruise for years. I received an email from Viking about two discounted cruises, one of which was on the Danube. My mother has always wanted to see Budapest and Vienna. When I told her about the Viking Cruise, the great price, and that I would go with her on the cruise, she was elated. We chose to take the extended stay in Budapest prior to the cruising date. We both agreed that this was the best thing that we have ever done together. Budapest was more than we ever expected. Viking arranged our stay at the Budapest Marriott, which is located directly on the Danube. We had an unbelievable view of the Danube and the Palace across the river, that was lighted every night. Viking offered us optional guided tours of Budapest each day that we did purchase at a minimal cost. The Marriott Hotel was excellently appointed the staff was pleasant and helpful. A complete buffet breakfast was included for each day that we stayed. This cruise was a dream come true for my mother, we loved every experience; from the extended stay in Budapest to the exciting tours in Vienna. On board, we enjoyed the Viking room accommodations; the excellent meals; the wine and music provided every evening; the friendly Viking staff; and last but not least the wonderful friends that we made on the cruise. This was our very first cruise, and I had always wanted to visit Budapest, the birthplace of both sets of my grandparents. Everything about the cruise was wonderful- delicious food, informative tours, excellent staff, comfortable amenities, easy connections and transfers, and enjoyable entertainment! We arrived early in Budapest to extend our stay in the city before checking in to the ship, all part of our Viking experience. We stayed at the Budapest Marriott which was also excellent in every way- very convenient for walking and exploring the city, delicious breakfasts, and very comfortable accommodations. By the second day on the boat, we agreed we will be doing this type of cruise again. Since our return we booked another Viking river cruise for later next year! The experience was perfect for us- small number of passengers, personalized service, culturally oriented, and flexibility to go off and do what we like to do like exploring by bicycle, hiking, etc. We are very active 60+ year olds and we were as busy as we wanted to be. The Viking River Cruises would suit all ages. We are very excited for our next cruise! Read Less

Booked this cruise with my daughter as a college graduation present and it was a gift to us both. This was our first cruise and, although I don't have another experience to compare it to, it was a wonderful experience. This cruise line really knows what it's doing from start to finish. We booked air through Viking which was a great price and they timed everything up better than I ever could on my own. We had a pretty good idea of the places we wanted to see but tossed around the cruise line to pick going through about 3 brochures. Viking just stood out and it did not disappoint! The staff, ship and food were better than anticipated. Shore excursions were great and well organized. We WILL be doing this again and the only decision to make will be the destination. We loved the cruise and the excellent treatment we received from the entire Viking crew. All of our tours were very good and the experience of our guides was amazing. We took advantage of most of the optional tours and enjoyed them very much; however, it didn't allow much free time. In Vienna we were treated to a special private performance put on by a group of aspiring opera singers and musicians. My wife and her sister both waltzed with a leading man from the cast which contributed to a very memorable and enjoyable evening. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the excellent meals that we enjoyed during the cruise and the attentive service that we experienced. We highly recommend Viking river cruises. Read Less

We took this cruise to experience the beautiful scenery along our route through Hungary, Austria, and Germany. We extended our trip to experience Prague in Czech Republic. The excursions were well planned and gave a good feel for the locales visited. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and personable and provided perspective to the sights. The towns visited were quaint and colorful. They had a great European feel, and we were provided plenty of time to wander and enjoy the local sights and foods. As opposed to an ocean cruise there was very little sensation of moving on our ship, the Viking Tor. The engine noise was almost undetectable, and the rooms were quite. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. One never had to ask more than once to get a service. The food on board was well prepared and there were plenty of choices more than enough to satisfy anyone's tastes. It was our first river cruise and I would highly recommend the experience to anyone. What a wonderful way to travel. I've loved cruising for a long time, but I was tired of the hassles of being on a boat with thousands of strangers. There were only 180 passengers on the Tor. The ship was beautiful and luxurious. Our cabin was comfortable. The food was delicious and the wine flowed generously. I loved it. Cruising on Viking gave us all the comforts we are used to as Americans while allowing us a much more immersive experience at the ports we visited. Travel can be hard, but Viking made it easy. Beyond dealing with the crowds, another thing I hated about cruising on big ships was the time wasted going from one part of the boat to another and all the rigmarole of embarkation and debarkation. On the Tor, instead of leaving our cabin 15-20 minutes ahead of time to get anywhere, it only took a matter of seconds to get everywhere I wanted to be - the dining room, the lounge, the sun deck or the shore. And food? WOW. Delicious food, impeccable service and great wines included in the price of my cruise. On a previous ocean cruise I was overwhelmed by the necessity to manage our meals and beverages. Viking removes all the hassle and makes cruise dining a pleasure again. The one thing I thought I might miss from the bigger ships was the entertainment, but I was wrong. Viking brought exceptional talent on board and to enjoy it all I had to do was wander down to the lounge after dinner. The intimate setting allowed me to really appreciate the talented performers. Don't expect a Broadway production, but don't expect to miss the extravaganzas either. When it comes to the ports and shore excursions, there are no words to adequately express how integrated I felt to our destinations. It was even better than the insulated feel of a hotel. You just walked off the boat and were in the middle of town. You could even stand on the boat and feel a part of the city life. If you cruise to be entertained by the boat, then you will miss the swimming pools, theater, shopping etc. etc. etc. But if your focus is the destinations you want to experience, then you will love Viking. We had a lower level cabin that suited us fine. All aspects of the ship- crew, service, ship, dining, entertainment, activities, and shore excursions were superb! We enjoyed the delicious local foods, and beverages; the wait staff was professional and friendly, providing the best personalized service. The concierge helped us with our many questions and and to plan additional activities we wanted to do. We don't know how Viking can do this any better. We are seasoned ocean cruisers who mainly travel in Europe but this was our first river cruise. All those years of watching Masterpiece Theatre and we finally succumbed to the lure of Viking's enticing advertisements! Well. Let me say this. They delivered. We had a wonderful time; in fact we're already booked for another Viking cruise in August. We got a deal on a Christmas Market sailing that included airfare. We hadn't a clue if we'd even like river cruising so we took the least expensive cabin, the ones known as "aquarium" cabins as they're only just above the water line. It worked out just fine. Prior to this we'd never done an inside cabin except once and that was a virtual balcony on the Quantum of the Seas. Given how small Viking longships are, it was only a minute to take the stairs and be outside in fresh air. We didn't miss the balcony one bit--and this is from someone who spends huge amounts of time on balconies on ocean cruises! Go figure. Our cabin was well designed and we had ample space for all our clothing. The bathroom is very small but efficient and well lit (as is the rest of the cabin, which we appreciated when reading in bed). One of the nicest things was that the small fridge was exactly that. A fridge, not a cooler. We bought beer and wine at several towns and were very pleased at how cold our beverages were. The food was marvelous. And so pretty on the plate. We thought it was easily on par with what you get in the specialty restaurants on ocean cruises. The service is very attentive and the wine/beer flowed freely. Top marks to Viking in this department, especially for the German dinner they put on for us. Authentic German food and entertainment in the dining room and all the servers even dressed in period costume. It was great fun! Entertainment? We knew coming in that there wasn't much of it. A piano player is what you get most nights. However, there were other nights when local entertainers came on board. We were treated to an operatic performance and two different choirs, all of which were excellent and much appreciated. I wondered beforehand if we might be a little bored on board as we really like all the entertainment options of ocean cruises. However, we found our fellow guests very sociable and it was no time at all before we'd made friends to socialize with up in the lounge and the time always flew by. I'd even go so far as to say it a great change of pace not to have entertainment options by the score! We were very lucky in that by the time we got on the Tor, water levels in the Danube had risen and we had a flawless sailing. The weather was fairly mild for the end of November though overcast and rainy. No problem though as Viking provides big red umbrellas and all our tours went on without a hitch. I must say that the complimentary tours were excellent. Every single one of them. Whoever hires guides for Viking passengers should be given a big pat on the back because they've done their homework. All our guides were well-versed in their subject matter and even better, enthusiastic and committed to showing their towns/cities to the best advantage. We thoroughly enjoyed our outings. Random notes about our cruise: we were in the "aquarium" cabins and yes, you will hear water and changes in engine noise when slowing down or speeding up (as when entering locks). If you're a light sleeper, either bring earplugs or upgrade to a higher cabin. We weren't the least bit bothered by the sounds after the first night. We got used to it pretty quickly but other people might not. Another thing is that food isn't available 24/7 as it is on ocean cruises. Meals are served at set times and that's it aside from muffins and cookies that were always available by the coffee/tea machine. No pizza when the mood strikes you! We actually liked this set up though because honestly, we didn't need to be snacking. Not when there's so much food available at breakfast, lunch and dinner. We returned from our Viking cruise very relaxed and happy. The Tor has a great crew. They really care about their guests and it shows. We are looking forward to our next cruise in the summer! This cruise was very well enjoyed by everyone in our party. We had three balcony rooms in our group. We booked late and there were no lower categories available. The accommodations were very nice and the crew/staff were excellent. Granted, we did have some problems, none of which were the fault of Viking. However, they handled them all very well. The first problem was a strike by Lufthansa four days before our flight. I was glad I booked the trip with inclusive air as it would have been MY nightmare trying to reschedule flights instead of theirs. They booked us on another airline and it was fine. The water level in the Danube was too low for the ship to make it to Budapest so we were put on it's sister ship on the second night. The first night they put us up in a very nice hotel. Again, everything was handled very professionally and smoothly by Viking. Yes, we had to take a coach to the ship and again at another point but the coaches they use are first class. The person who claimed there wasn't enough to eat or that there was no entertainment obviously isn't sophisticated enough for this type of cruise. Having done the big ships to the Caribbean, it was refreshing to travel on this small boat with a lot less people. The food was wonderful as was the service. If you were hungry on this trip, you must have a tapeworm. I had asked for more pillows on the first night aboard and when we switched ships midweek, my extra pillows were already in the room and didn't have start over with the new crew. I know that time of year is iffy for the weather but we had great weather. Each day they take you on a tour in the morning and then you can sign up for an optional tour in the afternoon. We are in our late 40's and lead pretty active lives and felt like we did plenty each day. We had folks in their mid 70's to 80 in our party and they did pretty well keeping up. They have separate tours that cater to those who are slower moving if you feel you can't keep up or you can just sit on the ship and look at the scenery. Plenty of places for a good view. They have local tour guides at each stop and some are better than others but overall they were all good and it gives you a good overview of each place the ship stops. I'm usually too cheap to do the all inclusive but in this instance, I'm glad I did. They pick you up from the airport and take care of you until they help you check in for your return flight home. No thinking necessary, just sit back and enjoy! Read Less

We had such a remarkable experience on our first Viking tour on the Seine, Paris to Normandy. We were delighted to have the opportunity to tour an area of Europe that was new to us. Arriving in Budapest we were met at the airport and transported with ease to the boat. Like so many others in 2015, we had to disembark and board another boat due to the low water level of the Danube. So we experienced two boats, the Var and the Tor. The crew made this transition seamless, our only chore was a few moments of packing and unpacking. Viking more than made up for the unavoidable inconvenience by providing extra perks. Both boats were clean and comfortable, the staff exceptional. The food was nicely presented and reflected the local cuisine. The local tour guides were knowledgeable and entertaining. The Viking crew were equally helpful. The daily briefings and programs were educational and entertaining. Disembarkation was easy though there was some confusion at the Nuremberg airport when so many of us arrived at such a small facility before the airport was fully staffed. In hindsight I would have liked a bit more time in Budapest and Vienna, the tours were whirlwind. It would have also been nice if we could have simply walked from the boat directly into the cities and towns more often than not. Viking has no control over this as it is the nature of the docking locations. As a result there seemed to be more bus time than the Seine trip. Overall, it was a wonderful trip and we have recommended it to several friends. Read Less

This was our first cruise and also our 40th wedding anniversary. The Viking personnel were amazing, and the service exceptional. Most of the land tours were excellent- with great guides. Food and service were fantastic. The weather was overcast and rainy for the entire week, but the crew made the trip very special despite the weather. The rooftop seating was closed for at least half the trip- so exercise in the form of walking was limited. These are not huge ships, although they are very comfortable. The passenger totals are very reasonable - making it possible to recognize almost everyone on board, as well as almost all of the crew. Our cabin was extremely comfortable and was cleaned everytime we left the cabin. the thoughtfulness of the crew was exemplary. I travel with lot is books, and found several Viking bookmarks kindly placed by my reading stand. Meals were served promptly and beautifully- with wine, etc available constantly. The shipboard lectures were very informative and entertaining, too. The attitude of the crew was wonderful. They seemed to enjoy their jobs and the opportunities they had. This was a once in a lifetime trip for us and we appreciated the attentive staff. The Danube River levels were low at the time of our trip, but fortunately we just got by in terms of passage. Only once did the ship move ahead, and we caught up by tour bus, when the levels were low. Our veranda suite was spacious ,comfortable and clean. Everything was in perfect working order. We got to Budapest too late to do much of anything. The Danube River ( which Viking never tells you even when asked) was low which we now know is common. We were forced to change boats from the Tor to the Var and couldn't use top deck most days. It was the best place to enjoy the scenery and relax and get some fresh air so very missed. Because of the low water this turned into packing, a long bus trip, and unpacking. The second boat,Var, was not as clean and the crew seemed tired...never really felt the service was the same. Lots of little requests were ignored...shampoo, coffee, wine and you felt like they were always ready for the clients to leave so they could get on with whatever they wanted to be doing. Others have said theirs turned into a bus trip so maybe we were better off with only being bused to the new ship and missinga part of the day. The tours were crowded but OK...never enough time to actually spend time really seeing the places. The organ concert was dry though the church was lovely...would have enjoyed seeing more of it and less of the funerial music. This was an anniversary trip and I have to say we were disappointed. Not ever going there again. Planning to go to Normandy and really hoping we get plenty of time at the beaches and a great guide. We are looking into other companies as Viking seems to be cutting corners and charging more...even some fees for side trips. This is not part of their advertising. Things that were included now have to be asked for in order to get. I was stung by something on the transfer bus and when I got to the ship I couldn't even get a tape for it. Read Less

Dining room man knew everyone's name by the end of the first day. They couldn't do enough for us. The food was excellent, every meal. We are 6 people who have travelled together for many years and having done several ocean cruises, we decided to try out the Romantic Danube with Viking River Cruise especially after having seen several of their commercials on TV (which are not very accurate). Everything was booked through a travel agent, who during the process of the reservation told us if we wanted to all be on the same flights, Viking was giving us a surcharge of $100.00 for one of the couples, which we did not appreciate. Three weeks before our departure, and at this point the trip is completely paid up, one of our travelling companions died. She was travelling with her sister in law who decided to come on the trip just the same. So, as already mentioned, the cost of their room was fully paid for 2, however Viking advised her that if she was travelling on her own, she had a surcharge of $3,369.00 because that was the cost for a single person. I told them that they were a heartless money gouging company and that they should have compassionnate rules and regulations. The profit they made on this room is ridiculous. On ocean cruises you spend several hours in buses to get to your excursions, and as Viking's commercials say: "Take less time getting there and more time being there" - this is not the case. A few days before our departure, we got an email informing us that we would not be travelling on Viking Var, but rather on Viking Tor because of low water levels, which I can understand is completely out of Viking's control. However, there was never any mention we would have to change ships half way through the trip. We boarded Viking Tor in Budapest, unpacked our bags and went to our first information meeting and that is when we got our surprise. We were informed that half way through our trip we would have to change ships. This meant repacking our bags, taking 2 long bus rides, and unpacking again. The compensation they gave us was one free drink after dinner, which meant most passengers did not benefit from this as after these long bus rides, everyone was too tired to go for a drink. Most of the tours are done in buses and the crowds at each of the excursions are just as bad as on an ocean cruise. So you spend a lot of time waiting for people who need to go to the washroom...Some of the guides are interesting and some are not. We truly expected to see much more than we did with fewer people as they show you in their commercials. I have to admit, the staff on both Var and Tor were amazing, which made up for some of our disappointments. Viking knew very well that there were water level problems, but they chose not to mention this to us and did not really compensate for this very big inconvenience. So for us it was a first and last time experience with Viking which we found to be over priced as it did not meet our expectations. And for everything mentioned above, we will not be recommending Viking to any of our friends and family. Read Less

I am not very good at this type of thing. The ship was very good. Accommodations were very nice and comfortable. The people servicing the rooms were very friendly and polite. The food was excellent and very nicely prepared. Service was done very friendly and I can not express how nice the the people were taking care of us. It was a joy to go down to the eating area. My wife is on a wheat free diet and the waiter would greet her when we entered the dinning room and explain what they had prepared for her meal. His name was Nenard and we can not say enough about him. The Port and shore excursions along with the guides that were hired were just great. They lived in the area and grew up there. Explained and pointed out the history of where we were and were the best. The entertainment that came on the boat were really good. I wasn't expecting too much but turned out to be better than I expected. Travel arrangements were done very well. The busses to get you to the tours were safe and comfortable. We had to change ships in the middle of the trip and everything was handled extremely well. The only thing that was disappointing was we missed the people that were working in the dinning room and bedroom area. You tend to get attached to the first group that is taking care of you. Before I go on I have to mention our Tour Director who was outstanding. He really put in a lot of effort to make our trip run well. His name was Soirin from Romania. A truly wonderful person. The only down side I have to recommend is the following. When we changed ships we put our packed bags outside our rooms and they were picked up and transferred to or rooms on the new boat very nicely. We arrived to our rooms and were very impressed how well everything was done. To continue with this. We had a three day extension in Prague and stayed at the Sheraton Hotel. I would consider it adequate, the lighting in our room was poor. Couldn't get the lights bright enough and they were yellowish. The room was nice. The Viking representative was, once again, really great. The location of the Hotel was excellent. I have to commend Viking for the breakfast buffet at the Hotel. They kept everything the same as what was on the boat. The choices were almost exactly like the Viking ship. We really appreciated it. When we had to pack up and leave we were told to put our bags outside our rooms, as was done on the boat when we changed ships, in the morning by a certain time and they would be picked up and taken to the bus for the trip to the airport. THIS IS A SECURITY BREACH. You are asked at the airport if the bag has been out of your sight at anytime. I would recommend that you be told to take or carry your bag to the bus when leaving the Hotel. This procedure also lends to a bag being lost or stolen as what happened to my daughter and her bag. Other than that last glitch, the trip was fantastic and would love to do it again if I could ever afford it. My age is getting up there, 77, and don't think it will happen again. I have promoted your Viking Tours to everyone That I have met and A few of my retired pilots from my company will be taking tours. I will never forget our Viking trip. Read Less
