Viking was suggested by my sister-in-law and I read reviews here on TripAdvisor before deciding to go. I couldn't be more disappointed. Prior to our trip we had heard from a german neighbor that the river levels were low. We called Viking who told us, that rain was coming and that they were well versed on how to handle the situation and if not to our satisfaction we would be fairly compensated for ANY inconvenience. The first sign things were going awry was when they told us we would be on the Mimir, not the Vili that we were originally slated to be on in our contract. For all the ports on the Rhine and Main, we were NOT docked at city ports, we were at ugly industrial areas far from the ports that were advertised in the brochure and had to be bussed to them on supposedly "short" bus rides. With the elderly population on the boat, it always took at least 2 hours for this transport. Two hours each day of our valuable vacation time for most days of our 15 days on Viking. It did appear that other river cruise lines were docked in the towns. When we got to the Danube, we were told that we were to transfer to the Vili. Again this consumed valuable vacation times to re-pack and re-unpack. Vienna and Budapest were the ONLY two ports that we were docked in town, not at some ugly industrial port that we were then bussed to and from. There were other disappointments but these were the major ones. When we called Viking customer service to register our complaints and ask for compensation and told them that we recorded the promise of possible compensation, we were threatened with being sued for recording the conversation. Many lies, many misleading statements, and being threatened. Their people are trained well to deflect. They are focused on quantity, not quality and making money, NOT customer satisfaction. We may take another river cruise but Viking would have to make this up to us for us to chose them again. With global warning and more drought they need to change their practices. I wish I had seen a review like this, prior to our decision to take Viking. Read Less

Enjoyed all the small towns in Germany and the outstanding countryside. We especially enjoyed the Rhine valley area, absolutely stunning. Overall the food and service on the ship was good. We enjoyed getting to know our servers and they did a great job taking care of us. Even though we were traveling with 12 other people, we enjoyed meeting other people from either the United States or countries outside the U.S. We unfortunately ran out of water on some parts of our trip but realize that is out of the control of Viking. They did their very best to accommodate us with bus trips or changing ships. The shore excursions were very enjoyable, and loved that they were mostly done by locals who love their towns they live in. We would have loved to have seen more of Budapest, absolutely gorgeous. We did add several days to Amsterdam which was wonderful. Read Less

This was a most disappointing holiday for the high price we paid. When booking this trip we assumed that you are able to step off the boat in to the towns listed and enjoy exploring on our own. Unfortunately we spent more time on buses as the docking stations are too far away. We also had to change ships which meant a 3 hour bus journey therefore missing an afternoon in Nuremberg. That then necessitated a 1.5 hour coach journey back to visit Regensburg from Passau on the following day. When in Koblenz the ship only docked for 2 hours so again little time to explore. If you intend to book find out exactly where you will be docked and for how long. We were also not informed at booking that the sun deck would be closed for 2 days because of low bridges. Had I been informed at booking I would not have paid extra for a balcony as we could not sit on it for about half the trip as the ship was docked along side other Viking boats a number of times. The included tours would have been good had it not been so busy. The number of tourists at the venues being taken around on guided tours meant they were packed (many of them from other Viking ships). Most of our guides however were knowledgeable and interesting. I cannot complain about the ship, cabin , staff or food. The sip was clean, the cabin whilst small was good and the food very good. I would not do another river cruise and would not recommend this one. We have emailed Viking but as expected have had no response. Read Less

We chose Viking River Cruises because we had heard so many excellent things about them from previous customers. The date and cost of the cruise also fit into our plans. We have been on the larger cruise lines and liked them, but Viking is a totally different, positive experience and totally exceeded all expectations we had. The rooms were very nice, the heated floor in the bathroom was totally awesome, the amenities were top of the line and always replenished and on hand. The complimentary water provided in the rooms was also topped off sufficiently, sometimes more than once a day. Bottled water was provided as you disembarked the ship for excursions, as well as umbrellas when the weather was wet. Viking's manner of communication while on excursions, was nothing short of awesome -- they were called "quiet boxes" with earphones and each person had their own, which was charged in your room when not in use. The person leading the excursion would talk into their own quiet box and you could hear everything being said without being right next to the guide. The staff on our ship were beyond attentive and pleasant, the who while being professional. The food was geared to the town we were visiting and always appetizing and interesting. The towns and all the history were something I will always treasure and a great and unique experience. Read Less

Travel to Europe, especially Germany was high on our "Bucket List". We researched several other "River Cruise" companies but chose Viking because of their itinerary, excursions and reputation. We were not disappointed because the beauty of each country and travelling along the Danube, Main and Rhine were fabulous. The sights along the Rhine with all the castles and vineyards were breath-taking. The staff was so friendly and personable and the food was absolutely decadent. We enjoyed great entertainment every evening with Nelly and Martin. The ship was beautifully designed and the cabins were very comfortable. We loved the French balcony as it provided a beautiful view with the floor to ceiling patio windows. The excursions were well organized and the guides were "locals" that were very knowledgeable and informative. My husband and I usually do not go to a destination that we have already done but, we both agree that we would repeat this trip again! The only thing we regret is that we ended in Amsterdam but did not extend our stay to spend time visiting this amazing city. We did not realize we would be leaving so early on our last day and we were not able to see Amsterdam at all. Overall, we must say it was one of the best vacations we ever did and the staff, accommodations, food (and drink!), places we visited through the shore excursions and beauty we saw was superb! One of our friends had taken the Viking Amsterdam to Budapest Cruise in September 2016 and they recommended it to us. We had never taken a cruise and we wanted to give it a try. The idea of a river cruise was appealing and our friends recommendation sealed the deal for us, so we booked the Viking Budapest to Amsterdam cruise in September 2018 and it turned out to be our best vacation ever. The service was top notch, from the crew who met us at the airport to the on-board staff. The meals on board ship were phenomenal - we sat at different tables every meal and met many great people from around the world. We took advantage of the included excursions which were all very interesting and we also took two optional excursions which we enjoyed immensely. We have since recommended a Viking River Cruise to many of our friends and we are considering a Viking River Cruise in China for May 2019. Read Less

We were anxious to see the beautiful landscapes along the Danube, the Rhine & Main River, and to visit all the cities on the tour, from Budapest to Amsterdam. A cruise with Viking was a relaxing and secure way to see Europe, as we learned on our first cruise last Fall, on the Viking ship Rolf, from Paris to Normandy. Our ship Mimir was as beautiful as we expected, and our only regret was that we hadn't booked a French Balcony room, as we had on the Rolf~the standard cabin we had on the Mimir was the same size, but seemed smaller with the smaller windows, with very limited views. Viking provided the opportunity for cultural & historical enrichment through their excellent guided tours & excursions along the way, which greatly added to our enjoyment. Embarkation & disembarkation was very smoothly and professionally done--so easy with the Viking representatives always looking out for their visitors! While on board, we were again impressed with the friendly and efficient crew & excellent service, and the quality of the food & entertainment offered. We also enjoyed the post-excursion extension in Amsterdam, which, again, had the Viking oversight and quality amenities. Read Less

I was asked to be a traveling companion by a good friend. I agreed immediately, since a river cruise was already on my bucket list. It turned out to be an absolutely great trip. It was my first river cruise, and I will definitely be a repeat customer. The inclusion of a shore excursion at each stop as part of the package is a great idea. The optional excursions I selected were all great. I was particularly looking forward to the Mozart and Strauss concert in Vienna, and it lived up to my expectations. The included tours were all well done by local guides. They were mostly walking tours, and they always had a group for those of us that moved a bit slower than the others. A nice touch that was appreciated. The dining was excellent, and the service was great. I really liked the smaller ship over a huge ocean going ship. It promoted getting to meet and make new friends among our fellow travelers. It was a very pleasant journey. Read Less

We wanted to see the interior or Europe and thought it would be great to do it via rivers. The ability to travel on water from Budapest to Amsterdam captured our imagination. Everything went exceptionally well. The ship was clean, fresh and modern. The crew were fun and always attentive. Half way into the cruise, we felt like we knew the staff. The program director was great fun and very informative. The food was great and we loved that it was inspired by the local cuisine. We loved the shore tours mostly. The cruise through the Wachau Valley was simply amazing. Our favorite village was the tour to Rothenburg--a charming medieval city on a hill with a wall still surrounding it. We only wished we had more time in each town and village we visited. The people in every country were extremely friendly. Perhaps the most moving was the special tour in Nuremberg. While distressing, it was very important to see what happened in Germany in the 1930s and 1940s. Loved traveling with our hotel! We would do it again in a minute...in fact we will. Read Less

We choose this one as our first River Cruise as we had heard it was a good introduction into the world of River Cruising. It also offered a variety of destinations. We experienced some very unusual things on this cruise which was not the norm and saw different ports than was on our itinerary. The ship had a broken part and therefore, we had to go slower on the river and often did not make the right destination and half way thru we had to go into dry dock and get it repaired which was gave us another new destination. We also, had locks that broke down and put our timing off. Although, we had little things the crew and staff was excellent and communicated very well with all of us on board. These little hiccups made our adventure all the more fun and memorable. We are looking forward to our next adventure on a river cruise and with Viking. Read Less

This was our first ever cruise, river or ocean and now we are spoiled for only the best. They seem to plan for everything that could possibly happen and make any changes seemless. The staff was unbelievable. We were pampered all the way. Food was amazing. We love to dance and the nightly lounge entertainment was perfect. We danced every night to great classics. We upgraded to the Veranda SuiteAA for the extra room. Extra room was nice as well as daily replenished wine, beer, and soft drinks and complimentary laundry service. The ports and shore excursion choices / options were very good. The only issue we had was the inconsistency of the guides ( which in general are not Viking, but outside vendors). Most were excellent but a few ..... not so much. That was the only opportunity we found. It was soooooo relaxing. Did not want to come home, but ........., reality hits. We are now looking for our next Viking cruise option. Read Less

We love cruising so we can see many places, but stay in just one "hotel." We found ocean cruises to be rather hectic with crowded shows and activities on board to keep you busy when you just want to relax, and too much time where the view is just the ocean. This river cruise had exactly what WE were looking for. Comfortable, relaxing, always a lovely view, staff were friendly and helpful, the excursions were well-planned and interesting, food was plentiful and delicious and always plenty of wine flowing (so you always slept well! hahaha) There were some interesting activities and talks on the ship, even a glass blower! If you wanted to stay in your cabin, you could also hear the talks over your TV which was very convenient. Of course, it would have been fabulous to have 3-4 days at many of the stops, but Viking did a nice job of planning many small village excursions as well as the larger city excursions. The staff could not have been nicer, from the room steward to the dining staff... everyone felt like family by the time the cruise ended. We would love to take another river cruise soon. Read Less

Wanted to travel in Europe, and this seemed like a great alternative to a regular tour, where you are living out of suitcases and spending your waking hours traveling to destinations. Loved the idea of having a home base. The ship was beautiful and well-appointed. The cabin was more comfortable than I thought it would be. The staff was exceptional. Our Program Director was incredible! She made the trip what it was. The food couldn't have been any better. Liked the open seating, so we could dine with different people and then decide who we'd like to spend more time with. Also liked that there were different options for dining. Every day was a new, wonderful adventure. The included excursions were great, and the optional ones we signed up for were highlights (Vienna Boys' Choir concert, Thermal Baths in Budapest, World War II tour in Nuremberg, cheese-making farm in The Netherlands, etc.) The local tour guides were either excellent or exceptional. The evening on-board entertainment was varied and fun, and the "lectures" were informative and helpful for our touring. The fact that we lucked out with unusually good weather was not lost on us. It made the trip that much better. We were very happy with the 2-day extension in Amsterdam. The hotel was great (even though it had been changed just before we embarked, due to construction at the originally booked hotel) and the excursions we signed up for were great. We actually spent another 3 days in The Netherlands before heading home. The only negative was the depression I felt at the end of the trip, when we disembarked. And then again, when the others with us on the 2-day extension left for home while we stayed on. It was like the end of summer camp and you are saying good-bye to friends you've made, but know you are unlikely to ever see again. I was suffering from Viking withdrawal. That's why we are already planning our next Viking river cruise. Read Less

My first river cruise with Viking was the France's Finest Cruise. It was absolutely perfect and extraordinary in every way. Wasn't sure Viking could match the perfection when I signed up for the Grand European but I now know to never give it a second thought about Viking's capability to provide the perfect blend of extravagance, excellent culinary experiences, and entertainment on board, while providing incredibly informative on shore excursions. Totally delighted with my cruise. We did a pre cruise option to Prague. Fabulous. Viking host staff were excellent. Everything went smoothly. The city was wonderful and our guides were excellent Once we got to Budapest, boarding the ship and settling in went with ease. Our Captain, Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, Dining Director, Chef, wait staff, cabin staff, pianist, all were excellent and totally there to make our cruise experience amazing. Each were attentive to our every need and desire. Carl and his colleagues were delightful always. I loved events planned for onboard entertainment. We all seem to have our favorites in the restaurant and lounge. There were so many wonderful cities and sites to take in every day. Each stop had it's specific interests. All of our onshore guides were very personable and well educated in the histories and interests of the cities and sites. We did a few extra excursions. I absolutely loved the Rothenburg ob der Tauber trip, and glad we signed up for that one. We were taken back in time to a beautiful medieval walled city, providing a wonderful authentic setting. This is just one of the many special experiences we enjoyed on our cruise. Absolutely loved every minute of every day. Thanks Viking Read Less

I was hesitant to take a river cruise but couldn't pass up the special price offer on this one from Budapest to Amsterdam. To my surprise, it would rate as one of the best cruising experiences I have had. The service was far above any I have experienced on a big ship, the food was great and the entire experience was above expectations. The main difference from big ship cruises was that there is not much entertainment or activities on board. It really doesn't matter because you are always busy anyway, dining, touring or just visiting and relaxing with new friends made on the cruise. If you are someone who needs to be entertained every second, this kind of cruise may not be for you but if you want a leisurely entertaining cruise that allows for just enough personal time, you can't beat this. I especially appreciated the attention any request and every member of the crew was very pleasant. As an example, when we arrived at the dock, the Cruise Director came rushing out to our car to help us with our luggage and insisted on carrying it to the ship. The Captain even came around and shook everybody's hand during the last nights meal. Read Less

We chose this Viking cruise because we heard from many friends that Viking was the best! Guess what? They were right! We wanted the Grand European trip from Budapest to Amsterdam covering many countries with three extra days in Prague before the cruise. The timing was right so we booked it and we are not sorry at all. We went the first two weeks of August and the weather was beautiful most of the days! The service on the cruise was magnificent in every way. I have many dietary issues and they could not have been more accommodating with every meal, even making me special gluten free breads and even croissants among other things. The maitre'd was amazing and so helpful to me. She actually went out of her way for me throughout the cruise. All of the staff on the ship were excellent in and very accommodating. The itinerary was wonderful and all the tours were great with marvelous and informative guides. It was the first river cruise we've taken, but it was the best cruise we''ve been on and we've been on 44 cruises all together. All of the Viking staff was friendly and helpful in every way from the time we got off the plane in Prague, to the time they left us after checking in at the airport to go home. My husband and I had been on two sea cruises, and decided to embark on a river cruise. We receive Viking River Cruise brochures often, and see its ads on TV. The "Grand European" was offered at a great price 10 weeks prior to sailing. We added three days in Prague prior to the cruise, through Viking; and two days in Amsterdam afterward, which we booked ourselves. Viking reserved our flights and, although both departing flights left a couple of hours late, we were still able to make our connections. Our luggage did not make it onto our flight from Heathrow to Prague, but was delivered to our room later in the evening. The Corinthia Hotel in Prague was first-class, and the included breakfast buffet was magnificent! The Viking shuttle van is available to take guests to and from Old Town. The bus trip to Budapest was comfortable and pleasant, with bathroom and lunch stops. The cruise exceeded our expectations from start to finish. The common areas of the ship were clean and beautiful. Crew and staff were friendly and helpful; and the food was fabulous. We enjoyed all the towns we visited. The included tours were pleasant and educational. Bottled water and umbrellas are available when leaving the ship. Our local guides were knowledgeable, and all had a good sense of humor. High water levels caused some delays along the way, but the Viking staff had everything under control, and we were seldom inconvenienced. When you take a river cruise, you must be prepared to "go with the flow", both literally and figuratively. You may not have as much free time as you expected in some of the towns, or an optional excursion might be cancelled. For safety reasons, the sun deck may not always be open to passengers. If you go with the attitude that there may be some deviations to the schedule, you will do fine. I would guess the majority of passengers on this particular cruise were baby boomers, mostly couples. They were fit, educated, and friendly; and mostly first-time river cruisers. Read Less

Viking is the master of river cruises. Everything is first class - the ship, the staff, the food, the programming. It started from the time we arrived by taxi to our ship. Crew members greeted us and took all of our luggage to our stateroom. We were there in time for a buffet lunch and sat out on the Aquavit Terrace to enjoy it. A free walking tour occupied our afternoon as more guest arrived. We enjoyed getting to know different guests each night at dinner as there are no assigned seats and most tables hold 6-8 people. One of our new friends asked the chef if we would be having sushi. He said it wasn't on the menu but he would be happy to make some. While in Vienna, he took a group shopping at a local market and purchased the items needed for the sushi. The chef made it for the lunch the next day and we got to join in on the treat! Each port included a guided tour (included in cruise price) and each guide was excellent. Our program director on board gave informative pre-destination lectures so we knew what to expect. He also explained things like water management in the Netherlands, an overview of EU, etc. Due to high water, our schedule was altered occasionally but Viking did an excellent job of making sure we got to see everything that was planned. Most evening, we had a gentleman who planned a keyboard and sang. We were able to dance on a small dance floor. Occasionally, they brought on special entertainment like a gypsy band and a glass blower. In Vienna and Kinderdijk, they allowed our relatives to come on board so we could sit and have coffee with them. We celebrated our wedding anniversary and they know how to do it right. Singing at dinner and a special cake. Our room was decorated to with swans made out of towels, flower petals all over and a sign. Very special!!!! Read Less

my parents took a Rhine cruise years ago and raved about it forever. We saw the tv commercials for Viking regularly and I would always comment that a viking river cruise was my dream trip. For our anniversary in September, my husband gave me a package from our travel agent about the Grand European Tour he had booked for us and we would be spending my birthday in Budapest as our first full day on board our cruise! Everything about the experience was incredible. The food, the staff who treated everyone so well, the tours, the talks on board, the scenery - it was incredible! We have sailed numerous times on ocean going ships with almost every cruise line and we have never had an experience like we did on Viking. On and off the ships is so easy, and embarkation and disembarkation are so focussed on the traveller as opposed to the convenience of the staff. We were so impressed that we bought vouchers to use on our next cruise with Viking while we were on this one! We learned so much about the places we visited and the history of the people that we would never have known had we not gone on the tours and the guided tours were so easy to join. There were a variety of tours including some geared to easy walking, some that were longer and offered more history or some with more free time to explore. The onboard talks gave so much information about the places we were visiting, the economies, the history of the ruling class, all about the evolution of coffee houses, even a demonstration about making apple strudel and one with professional glass blowers. The beds are comfortable, the food incredible, the common areas versatile and the service and views unbeatable. Our captain was amazing and got us through the entire cruise despite high waters and low bridges - this cruise was the best vacation we have ever taken and we have travelled extensively. When given the introduction to the Viking river cruises online they made it seem that we would dock in the center of town (which most are based around the river) and we would walk off the boat. While this may have been the case in some instances it wasn't the case in most. Many times we needed to take a bus to visit the main sites. Also, due to the locks....68 in total on our trip...the amount of time was limited in some cases. The locks after one or two become a nuisance.....closeness of docking in town almost nonexistent. The food was 2nd grade. The meat was poor grade, tough and not prepared properly. The choices although regional could have been much better. Not a luxury trip....accommodations was decent (new ship which helped) but nothing like a higher end ocean cruise ...maybe there is a better line to try. Read Less

We'd been thinking about a river cruise for some time. We liked the idea of a small intimate ship, and that your room travels with you as you sail on the Danube to visit Budapest, Bratislava, VIenna, Melk, Passau. We booked the Danube Waltz cruise entirely through Viking including air and transfers. The whole trip exceeded our expectations. The A380 from Wash DC to London was an engineering marvel. A Viking host met us at the Budapest airport to take us to the ship. Our ship had to be switched to the Mimir at the last minute due to river water levels elsewhere. The Mimir was fantastic; the crew even better. Comfy, quiet cabin; we never heard a sound from the neighboring cabins. Daily updates were thorough and easy to understand. The tours of each city were great. We had excellent guides (one was a college professor) take us on educational and interesting walks/bus rides. In December each city had Christmas Markets with lots of music, food and shops set up in the town center. A local Christmas choir was brought on board for Christmas eve entertainment to sing local and traditional songs. The day trip to the Melk Abbey was neat, and the trip to Salzburg even better. We added on home visit in Bratislava, and a Mozart concert in Vienna. The food offerings on the ship were outstanding. Regional recipes with local ingredients gave us Hungarian goulash and bavarian pretzels right at our table. The ship program manager and the concierge always had time for individual questions and took the time to ensure we had all the information we wanted. We met some neat people on our cruise. We even teamed up with one single traveler to win a trivia contest one afternoon on the ship. We won a bottle of champagne and they comped our Mozart concert. Wow! This was our first cruise of any kind ever, and the whole trip exceeded our expectations. We added on three days in Prague after the cruise ended which was a fantastic mini extra vacation on its own. We would highly recommend this trip. We are already planning another river cruise maybe to Russia in the future. Read Less
