Enjoyed every aspect of our Rhine cruise last year and was keen to experience The Danube. I wouldn’t have chosen another company as all aspects of our previous cruising experience were excellent. We wee not disappointed this year! The customer care Viking offers is second to none. Everything ran smoothly from the time we booked until the time our cruise ended. All the crew are pleasant and efficient and appear to enjoy their work which is a great reflection on the company. The food was delicious with a good range of choices and all beautifully presented and served. The accommodation is great you are so well looked after in an unfussy seemingly effortless way. The excursions took us to places of interest and well informed guides were able to provide you with facts and information you needed. There was a range of entertainment on offer . My only criticism would be that some of the singers needed a microphone. Well done Viking Read Less

We had no previous experiences on a Cruise or River Boat Cruises. This was our anniversary. We planned a great deal before venturing out. The Cruise line surprised us by noting that our cabin was upgraded to a suite. We enjoyed the accommodations, were excellent. Ship was very well kept and clean with a very friendly staff. Our house keeper was always available to us and look to please at every moment and time. Dining was very good. The seating was new to us. We enjoyed meeting different people from different cultures and lands. The options for dine was more than adequate and we enjoyed the meals very much. There was questions about the lunch menus. These were more then adequate and there were options off the main menus. Ports, shore excursions and guided tours were very knowledgeable informational and historical. However we would have liked more time to look at museum exhibits. There were two that standout, Terezin, Czech Republic and Schonbrunn Palace, Vienna, Austria. OVER ALL A WONDERFUL TRIP AND EXPERIENCE. Would do It again. Read Less

The food and cleaning departments were super but the cruise directors were just horrible. 10 people were left behind in Vienna when a tour guide decided to leave 15 minutes early, guide and cruise directors didnt care at all. Entertainment on the ship was hideous music was a man playing a key board of songs from the 1960s and playing them badly. There were never enough seats in the lounge for people, and the free WiFi only worked in one small spot on the ship so everyone had to stand on top of each other to use it. Our room room smelled of dirty socks and while the cleaning tried hard to clean every surface, the manager of room services told us it was fine. Lastly we paid for a French balcony room only to see another French balcony room abutting ours one foot away every day. They stack there to four Viking boats next to each to save docking fees so all we saw was the boats next to us and at night they travelled to next destination so it was dark. Just the worst! We have been on several Viking River cruises before. Sadly-the Legend is an old, tired, leased ship and is nothing like the Viking owned ships. No aquavit lounge for starters, so no great place to sit outside. No outdoor balcony in our suite-which was really expensive. There’s no service on the rooftop-which is the only outdoor seating. And then there’s the food. The dinners are just not good. I’m not a picky eater-and I haven’t finished 1 meal because they are just not tasty. Breakfast and lunch have been fine. The furniture is worn out and the main lounge is set up like an old cocktail lounge from the 70’s. Viking-shame on you for compromising your standards and proving that your growth is now changing your standards. You leased a substandard ship for your loyal passengers rather than holding off until you had a nice ship available. The cabin had none of the usual Viking electrical outlet choices, so I couldn’t plug in my curling iron! I will say the staff has been very good. The included tours have been good and we’ve had a couple of really fabulous tour guides. Viking should send some secret shoppers on their cruises to see what’s going on and to eat the food. I think the senior management would be shocked if they spent a week on the Legend. Read Less

We loved the historical sites experienced in the wonderful free and optional tours of the itinerary selected by the designers of the cruise. Our selection of the excursions available provided excellent activities for us commensurate with our age (elderly) and physical capabilities. The size of the optional groups (and even of the entire group aboard ship) was small and not uncomfortably overwhelming as we encountered aboard ocean cruise ships. The crew and workers aboard the Legend were all dedicated to providing their guests with optimum experiences. We noted that very quickly the staff on board began to remember our names--and we theirs. The open seating at the meals allowed us to circulate among the other passengers aboard so that we became familiar with many others. It was a congenial group overall. The food aboard was wonderful offering at each meal a buffet of several new options and a menu of fare that could be prepared to order. So far, the best cruise taken of our three thus far! Read Less

We have had two ocean cruises on the small motor sailer Winds tar. Outstanding. We expected similar experience from the heavily advertised Viking Danube cruise. This was another low water summer, but we were lucky. We did not have to change ships. We were unlucky in that we were docked three ships abreast turning our stateroom into a dark cave most of the time. I gather this is often the case. Our balcony was not a balcony. It was a sliding window. We had one day of no a/c. We had fumes overpowering us when our neighboring ships exhaust lined up with our intake. Passengers were ill and no one could stay in their staterooms. Another half day, no water. Throughout this, no information disseminated to the passengers who finally had a harsh confrontation with the ships steward. Tours were adequate, with a couple exceptions...biking in Wachau Valley was fabulous and could have been twice as long. Dining was in a dreary room, never outside. Food was good but menu choices repetitive. Passengers were surprisingly underdressed in the evening, many in their shorts and tees from the daytime. Don’t bother taking much in the elegant casual realm. The demographic was quite frail on the whole and the day trips labeled active were only moderate. Read Less

Viking Danube Waltz River Cruise August 2018. First two days in hotel due to low water levels. Fourth day in Vienna and ship broke down.p, generator failed. Spent three days trying to fix it but couldn’t. . Bussed to Germany and two more days in hotel. Viking and TripMate insurance will not acknowledge ship broke down. It is as if the ship never existed. Received 25% refund and future voucher. Further compensation denied by both stating that LOW WATER LEVELS resulted in itinerary changes. A COMPLETE LIE. The only low water levels were in Budapest at start of trip. We splurged and paid $12,000 for a suite since it was our 50th anniversary and would be our last big trip due to health issues and our only view on the ship was the stateroom of the boat parked next to us. In all my calls and correspondence not once was the ship Legend mentioned and that it had broken down. I got the silent treatment when I brought it up. We missed two destinations, Krems and Linz and never cruised an inch. We could not use the 25% off voucher for a future cruise and that was all Iwe was trying to get compensation for. I have never dealt with anyone as dishonest as Viking. Read Less

Don’t book book Viking river cruises. We bought the 7-day Danube Waltz from Aug 5 – 12, 2018, and spent one night cruising. Viking gave us a bus tour with hotel stays. Their boat broke down – couldn’t flush the toilets a lot of the time – and their compensation is 25 percent of our paid cruise fare, not including the airfare we had to pay to get there. We had low water at the start in Budpest and no boat, but even tough the water had been down for a month, they didn’t reschedule the cruise. For the low water, they gave us a 25 percent future cruise voucher that expires in one year. But the rest of the nonexistent cruise was Viking not taking care of its boat. I feel as though Viking is the car salesman who sells you a Mercedes, but delivers you a Yugo, and then says he will give you a discount on your next Mercedes. By withholding an appropriate refund, Viking is asking us to cover the cost of its repairs and to pick up the tab for a cruise they failed to deliver. I wrote the chairman, Torstein Hagen, but Viking said the 25 percent refund is the best they will do. Sounds like a bait-and-switch scam. Read Less

STAY AWAY FROM VIKING RIVER CRUISES. THEY ARE INTENTIONALLY DISHONEST AND WILL CHEAT YOU IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG. Here is what happened to us. We just returned from what was intended to be a 7-day Danube Waltz cruise from August 5-12, 2018. The day we arrived in our embarkation port, Budapest, we got an email from Viking telling us that low water levels prevented the boat from getting there and we would have to be bussed to our boat in Bratislava. We learned later that Viking knew about the water issues over a month before we arrived, but of course never told us because they wanted us locked into their hot mess of a cruise so we couldn’t demand a full refund before we flew to Europe. When we finally got to the boat and a shortened stay in Bratislava, we had only 1 night cruising. The next morning they told us the generator broke down. We had no toilets and menu items were unavailable since the kitchens were down as well. They told us to use the public restrooms on the boat docked next to us. We also had a high pitched screech in our room from midnight until about 3:30 AM and the room smelled like old socks. We spent several hours on a bus each way to see the Abbey in Krems. Never got to see the town, and the next day were told the generator couldn’t be fixed and we’d be bussed to our disembarkation port of Passau. We spent 6 hours on a bus. They did stop so approximately 100 of us could pay to use the restrooms in a gas station. Then they put us up in a hotel 30 miles outside of town. We got a letter shoved under our hotel room door the night before the “cruise” ended telling us we’d get 25% of the base fare back. Because this didn’t include airfare and our extension in Prague, we got back $1,724 after spending more than $12,000 on this trip. Viking’s concealment of the low water levels was intentionally deceptive – commonly referred to as fraud. This was our worst cruise experience on many levels. Viking is only concerned about its bottom line. It cannot be trusted. We wrote a letter to the Chairman and got no further compensation or apology. Read Less

I am a repeat customer to Viking River Cruises. I will from now on highly recommend ABV (anyone but Viking) most of all due to the lack of customer service in spite of 5 notes to TellUs@Viking.com. We were given less than 24 hours of notice that low water would mean late embarkation onto boat. Not a problem as far as I was concerned before we set out. However, this was the beginning of a horrible and stressful experience (I can not call this a vacation). If you wish to see how poorly Viking treats their customers after they have paid up, please read my story below. It involves ZERO travel assistance in spite of paying extra for it, horrible accomodations, limited food choices, no working toilets, skipped ports of call, accomodations far from tourist areas with no shuttle service, no daylight river cruising on the ship, long hours spent in buses on autobahns, and finally, no contact from Viking representatives even after writing 5 emails. My elderly uncle and mother paid Viking Travel to arrange their business class travel to and from a Viking Danube Waltz Cruise on Aug. 4, 2018. This was their last trip overseas, and due to their physical capabilities, specifically booked business class with Viking for that final special cruise. My mom and uncle flew in from Denver and arrived in Munich 3 hours after I arrived In from Houston. When I arrived, I found out our connecting flight to Budapest was canceled. For the next 12 hours, I attempted to contact all of the travel and emergency numbers Viking gave us in the brochures to assist with getting us all to Budapest. U.S. phone numbers were only open at U.S. Pacific time... Viking cruises in EUROPE! My mom and uncle were automatically rebooked on a flight to Warsaw, Poland with a 40 MINUTE layover in Munich where they were supposed to get through passport control and then change terminals. All other flights were overbooked. Since Viking travel was unavailable at any number I attempted, I worked with a very nice airline representative in the lounge who literally spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone arranging a message to my relative’s inbound plane from the U.S. We arranged a mobility pickup so that they were first off their plane, fast assisted through passport control, and then driven in a private airport car directly to our Warsaw bound plane, which was not parked at a gate. Once in Warsaw, we were with a different airline to get to Budapest, and unbelievably for a second time that day, our flight was canceled. Again, I tried all my Viking numbers including the ship’s number and email which with we were provided, but again, no responses. After a stressful time standing in lines and arranging flights for all of us to Budapest (without Viking assistance), I was finally able to get a hold of Viking travel representative, somewhere on the west coast of the U.S. as it was finally morning in Pacific time before we boarded. They had no idea of our “new” travel plans, nor did they know what hotel we were to go to. They suggested we get our own taxi to where another Viking ship was docked and to ask them where we to go. We arrived late in Budapest, where I stood in line to report lost bags (of course, none of our bags arrived at the airport) and finally, we made it our hotel in Budapest. This was Day 1 of the cruise, and we had no dinner and no assistance from any Viking representatives. The next morning, an impromptu Viking desk was finally manned at the hotel at 8AM, but this hourly worker said she could not help us with our lost bags, told us meals were not included that evening, but that we should meet in lobby for our included Budapest tour in 45 minutes. On the bus, there were no Viking representatives, but only contracted tour guides. We finally met with the program director of our ship, Viking Legend at 1 PM after the tour, and for the first time was able to get assistance with finding our lost bags and assurances that our dinner was free at the hotel. We found out 75% of our fellow cruise guests were booked in the Intercontinental Hotel Budapest, right on the Danube in the middle of the tourist area. Our hotel, the Corinthia was on the second major traffic circle away from the Danube River, too far to walk. No shuttle service was offered for those of us staying in the Corinthia. Viking arranged a lunch after our tour at a restaurant which offered 1 food choice, a chicken breast with sauce and mashed potatoes. Our dinner that night at the Corinthia hotel had 1 offering only, chicken breast with sauce and mashed potatoes. The food was NOT up to Viking standards. The next day we were bused 1 1/2 hours to Bratislava and finally embarked on the ship, Viking Legend. We cruised to Vienna in the middle of the night between 9 PM and 3 AM while we were sleeping. This was to be our only Danube cruising on our ship. Our Vienna tour happened according to plan. However, that evening when we were to cruise overnight to our next stop, Krems, it was announced there was an electrical generator problem, but that it was being worked. We awoke the next morning still in Vienna and were told problem was still being worked (and since the toilets didn’t flush, we could use sister ships public toilets docked on either side of us). Breakfast no longer offered menu items, as cooking was limited due to the electrical problem. Buses were arranged to take us on our next included tour, the Krems abbey, an 1 1/2 hour drive one way. Unfortunately, my mom tripped when traipsing through 2 other Viking boats to get onto the dock to board the bus, and cut open her eye. Viking representatives called an ambulance and we spent the next 3 1/2 hours in the Vienna ER where her eye was bandaged. Back on the boat in the afternoon, specialists were still working on the electrical problem. Announcements occurred frequently saying they hoped we could sail sometime in the night. The plan was to cruise overnight to start of Wachau Valley past Krems and wait until morning, and then cruise through what is the highlight of a Danube cruise. We awoke still docked in Vienna. Electrical testing throughout the morning again meant limited breakfast AND lunch and walking to another ship to use the toilets. We couldn’t get off boat in the morning, because departure was supposed to be imminent as soon as problem was fixed. By lunchtime, they gave up, and we were told to pack our bags, eat a quick lunch (limited offerings due to electrical problem), and then board buses. Viking tried to salvage a tiny portion of Wachau Valley viewing by busing us 2 hours to near Krems where we were herded down a busy tourist pedestrian road to a dock where we boarded a public tourist boat for a 45 minute cruise down the Danube. It was very crowded as we were sharing with non-Viking tourists, and the boat had very few seats outside to see both sides of the river. Understand that on this entire 8 day Viking Danube Cruise, 45 minutes was the sum total of actual cruising on the Danube River in the daylight! Back on the bus we were driven nearly 3 hours to a “resort” hotel 43 km away from Passau, our intended cruise destination. Since this was last minute accommodations, rooms were limited. Our room was in an annex furthest from reception and had no AC nor fan (this was August). The room was over 90 degrees when we arrived and 1 of two windows was bolted shut. I asked for another room immediately and was told there were none. Our room never got below 82 degrees F for the 2 nights we slept there. Viking representatives told us they would try to get window fixed, but nothing was done by the hotel. Drive time to Passau for our included tour was a 45 min. bus ride one way, and our lunch was arranged at a Passau restaurant, where again, due to the last minute arrangements, no choices were offered. Our cruise entirely bypassed the city of Linz and the intended included tour, where for personal reasons, I had most wanted to visit. During and after the cruise, I wrote 5 notes to Viking customer service at TellUs@Viking.com. During and after the cruise, they replied 3 times and assured me I would be contacted when I got home. The last night at the hotel outside of Passau, a letter was slipped under the door in the middle of the night. In it, we were offered a 25% discount off a future cruise good for 1 year (my Mom and Uncle can’t use this and I certainly won’t use it), and a 25% refund on the cruise portion only. Even after we “received” this offer, I wrote customer service about this, and they assured me someone would still contact me. It has been 2 weeks since returning home, and NO ONE from Viking has contacted me, but I do get almost daily advertisements for costly Viking cruises. Please PLEASE reconsider booking anything with Viking. Read Less

We booked this cruise for it's Itinerary. Especially enjoyed the cities visited and the scenic countryside. The Viking staff was professional, accommodating, efficient, but not intrusive. The cruise director, as well as, all the staff, kept us informed of all procedures and processes. We liked the basic all in one pricing structure. The boat was very clean and easy to navigate. An older boat, the cabin was still well appointed, comfortable and very pleasant. Transfers from airport, to and from excursions were excellent and extremely well organized. The guides for the shore excursions were knowledgeable and friendly. The tour coaches were modern and clean, comfortable with good views. Food choices were varied and plentiful. We really liked the menu items suggested by the region visited. By the nature of the cruise the entertainment was limited, but good quality, fun and relaxing. We would definitely recommend Viking river cruises and plan to book in the future. Read Less

The crew did a superior job of keeping it clean and only worked when we were away. The ship was ably crewed and the personnel was friendly and competent. Dining was excellent, the wine selection was acceptable. Board entertainment was above average for such a small ship. Excursions were above average with practically no idle time. Embarkation and disembarkation was easy and pleasant. Complimentary bottled water and umbrellas were always available. Unlimited free coffee, tea and snacks were an added bonus. It was impossible to get access to an aspirin while on navigation. No children traveled with us. The cruise was not for children, most of the passengers were seniors including my wife and I. We definitely will cruise with one of your ships next year, probably we will try a sea cruise. Practically everything was included, avoiding the customary nickel and diming of most cruises. David, the entertainment officer deserves a special applause. Read Less

We met some amazing people and learned so much from the excursions led by educated and informed guides. The dining experience was both visually and gastronomically pleasing, and we grew fond of the cheerful and attentive staff. We always felt well cared for and found answers to our questions at the front desk. The cabins were kept immaculate and well stocked with towels and bath products. We enjoyed the lectures and informative meetings in the lounge, especially the Mozart lecture before the concert in Vienna. The lecture on the history of the Danube along with a slide show was fascinating. We left the ship with rich memories and new knowledge. I think of the cruise every day and am eager to cruise again! Also, because of the casual dress code and and lesser number of passengers on a river boat.We enjoyed the superb accommodation and excellent service provided by Viking. Our stateroom on the main deck was comfortable and the house keeping was meticulous. We had the daily schedule placed on our bed every evening. It gave us the history of the places we will visit and details of optional activities. This was very helpful . Viking did a good job of arranging trained English speaking guides. We enjoyed the daily included tours. We kept the afternoon to ourselves for a short nap and the a walk to explore the place in our own . We had choices for our meals and the service was first rate. We also got to dine with a limited number of people and made a few cruise buddies! Viking staff were helpful and courteous at all times. Great destinations, all stunning European cities, met many interesting cruisemates.State room was adequate enough, although small. Ship was dated, looks like a refurbish is in order (carpeting). The crew were friendly and efficient with their tasks. Food was very good, as always on Viking. Onboard credit should be usable for applying towards tipping the ship crew/staff. Some of the ports were jammed with other cruiselines, which was surprising..we expected other riverboats due to popularity, but still it was crowded, having to walk across other boats to get to shore. Mostly, the tour guides were knowledgable, friendly, and open to questions. Then again others were rushed to maneuver through crowded streets, especially in the major cities. Larger groups are not desirable, since the guide is forced to spend valuable time herding everyone. Airport Transfers worked fine, and the porters did a good job of handling our bags. This was an excellent way to explore the Danube region. Great historic sites and scenery, but after a while there is a sameness to the cathedrals and castles and it is almost too much to absorb at one time. Cobblestones are "quaint" but they play havoc with lower back and legs. Our floating home was very comfortable and the crew were friendly and helpful. Food was well presented and provided an authentic taste of the region. Viking is a leader in the industry and they have mastered the logistics of managing their guests so that everything runs as smoothly as a Swiss clock. Shore excursions are well planned and comprehensive. Not too much time spent in gift shops either! We did not travel until mid October. In retrospect, we should have gone earlier as the weather was bleak for most of the trip -- the kind of bone-chilling damp that leaves you wanting something warm as soon as you return to base. Traveling earlier in the year (September) would have improved odds of more favorable conditions. Also, this weather did not make it easy to get good photographs along the way. Read Less

Loved everything about it. Great cabin, excellent services. Clean, food outstanding. Love how they serve regional dishes at different destinations. This time, we didn't do the formal dinners/dining rooms. We did the buffet so we could get a taste of everything! LOVE the smaller, more intimate ships. Don't want those "floating cities." Once you go with Viking cruises, River or Ocean, you'll be spoiled and won't want any other line. Also, at least one excursion in each port paid, too! Luxurious linens and towels! Heated bathroom floors! I've been on over 20 cruises. All different lines and itinerary. Nothing else compares! We got our air/transfers through Viking and it couldn't be anymore seamless transitions. And, the busses were so new they were removing plastic covers from the seats! The busses have toilets. What more could you ask for? Again, you cannot possibly go wrong with Viking. Can you tell, VIKING CRUISES are the BEST. Read Less

What a wonderful experience on the Danube River. If you love to visit interesting cities and towns and explore (at your own pace or with a group), then this is the cruise for you. The scenery on the Danube river on sailing days is spectacular...took my breath away, even other passengers were so friendly...met great people at dinners. The ship was tidy and clean, service and staff is first class...they are so helpful and take time to help you out, excursions are wonderful and interesting (only thing is maybe add a bike tour), cabin was spacious considering, bed was so comfortable...great views from the room, food/meals were delicious! I like the way they would adapt their menu to the port of call! I would definitely recommend a River cruise for 45 and up...very relaxing and easy going. Not much night life, but a nice drink and some dancing after dinner was fun! My husband and I definitely plan to do this again!! Read Less

We just returned from Viking's Romantic Danube Cruise from Budapest to Nuremburg and had a wonderful time! We chose this tour because I really wanted to see these cities and our extension to Prague. And we chose Viking because of the cost, it's reputation and the number of years they have sailed and ships that they have. From the very start we were treated like Royalty. Being picked up at the airport without any worries and wisked off to our ship. Food and drinks awaited us. Our rooms were ready even though it was still morning. Yes, the rooms are small, it's a ship, remember? But it was fine! In fact we were not in the room that much. My biggest concern in booking this trip was that I was sure I wanted a room with either a balcony or the picture windows. Well they were all sold out. So we took a room on the lower level with smaller windows. We were VERY happy that we didnot spend all that extra money on the other rooms. We were seldom in our rooms. AND when we were cruising we wanted to be on the upper deck where we could see BOTH sides of the shore. Plus we were with friends. We could not have gathered in our room, way too crowded for that. The crew was exceptional, especially our Program Director, Suzanna and our Conciere, Edit. Edit arranged bikes for us at one port and gave us countless other ideas of things to do in port and how to get from one place to another. Suzanna was on top of everything and both always had a smile on their face. I'm not sure when they ever slept because they were everywhere. Food was plentiful and delicious. The staff was right there to serve and were very happy accommodate any special requests. Our room was spotless! Our maid was in there cleaning and turning down beds, etc, countless times a day. Superb! There is not a lot of entertainment on the ship but I knew that ahead and didn't expect it. After dinner we were usually very tired from a busy day and getting ready for the next. We are very active 60 year olds and loved the busy days. If you have trouble walking around or just like relaxing, you may want to consider another tour. The potrts were marvelous. Budapest was so pretty. Be sure to go to the thermal baths! They were divine! We did not do the extention in Budapest and that would have been a good idea, especially because we were there on a Sunday and there was a marathon going on. Several places were closed for the day so we missed seeing them. We went on an excursion to Salzburg and I would not recommend it. Too far to go by bus, too crowded, not enough free time. I would stay in Passau. LOVED Regensburg! Such a sweet old town, untouched by the war. So glad we did the extention to Prague. Just magnificent! And Viking did a great job of getting us a great hotel right in the middle of the city. Plus we got a great city tour through Viking. Vikingt handled a few problems very professionally. No one can predict the river water levels and yes we did have to go by bus to our last 2 ports. Disappointing but I would not blame Viking. Also, that same week we were there Viking was dealing with the boat crash. The staff again handled themselves very professionally. Overall, we loved our trip! And highly recommend Viking! I will do another river cruise some day, I hope, and I will stay with Viking. Thanks, Njord staff and crew! Read Less
