This was our 3rd cruise with Viking. All three experiences were A-1, Top Shelf, Some additiona busing on one,but we still had a fabulous time. The staff on our most recent cruise was particularly enjoyable. Mario the cruise director was knowledgeable and always ready to assist and answer any questions. The two game nights were especially entertaining. The wait staff in the dining room, were beyond delightful. Carman, one of the dining room captains, along with Chip, were a delight to be with, and they took the extra time to assure we had everything we needed. The staff in the lounge, led by head bartender Armando, and his trusty, knowledgeable duo of Robert and Matej, made sure whatever drink we desired was prepared, and prepared properly. The Chef and his staff always had a great menu planned, whether breakfast, lunch or dinner. My all time favorite, from a cruise in 2012, is the oatmeal. don't know how, but I've never tasted anything quite like it. In closing, Viking River Cruises, delivers a quality product.if you haven't been on one of their cruises, you should, you won't be diappointed. I'll be booking my next cruise later next year and can't wait to see the next adventure. Read Less

We started out on the Viking Jarl. The staff was excellent and if our whole cruise had stayed on the Jarl we would have had our dream vacation in spite of the low water levels. The Captain, Hotel Manager, Program Director, wait staff, bartender, room steward and all other staff we came in contact with was excellent. But the moment we changed onto the Atla the staff was rude, had an attitude, food service was bad bad (Banana pudding was a small, hard muffin with hint of banana, not a creamy, delicious pudding), food was ok but not like the great food we had on the Jarl. All in all the whole experience on the Atla was terrible. We were made to feel like an inconvenience and they could hardly wait until the next day when they could pass us off to the Bragia. When we transferred on Saturday to the Bragia it started out fine. We were greeted well. But the wait staff was clearly lacking. The Aquavit Terrace had the food for breakfast laid out but the entire time we were eating we never saw any wait staff to help us. The final night was the breaking point. We had experienced a bad tour with a guide we could not understand, it was cold and we were tired. When we arrived for dinner we were advised that the regional Hungarian menu was ALL we could order from!! The staff was extremely rude when we requested other choices. Finally the matre de allowed my husband who cant have spicy food to have a plain hamburger and french fries. It was like they couldn't get rid of us fast enough. The next morning we were staying at a hotel in Budapest we had arranged. Although our bags had been out by 7:15 as told, when we got ready to leave at 8:30 they were not upstairs. We had to ask for them to be brought us and a taxi called. We previously had been told by friends what a great cruise line Viking was. This trip was terrible. Read Less

We wanted to cruise on a river in Europe. People told us that Viking was the best, and they were right! The entire ship was always very clean and neat. The staff was very accommodating. I have a food allergy and they worked with me to make sure my meals were prepared according to my needs. The tour guides were extremely informative and friendly. We really liked our experiences ashore. Meals on board were great with lots of variety especially the local selections. The relaxed and informal atmosphere on board allowed us to make numerous acquaintances and friendships. The entire experience seemed very well organized and geared toward making things easier for senior citizens, as well as those with handicaps. We celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary on the ship and the staff graciously helped us make the event memorable with cake, champagne, and song. The music program and special events in the evenings were very enjoyable. We got the impression that Viking partnered with local historic and scenic organizations to help make the tours especially enjoyable and fruitful. At the end of the tour, we elected to add on the trip to Prague. This was very well organized and seamless. We LOVED Prague. Upon return, we found our friends quite curious in our experiences. We hope to take another Viking cruise on a different river in the future. Read Less

We picked this cruise to do an early summer short European cruise. We had looked for a while but all suites were fully booked. Then I found this date with a suite with possible upgrade to the Explorer suite, the best cabin. Two weeks before the trip we were confirmed for the upgrade. When we arrived we were very pleased with the suite. What we didn’t realize that being at the back of the boat with an upriver trip we were going to be subject to a large amount of engine noise. Apparently there was an engine problem. But at night we were subject to 93-98 decibels of engine noise despite the best the captain could do. So the service was great, the program was great and the food awesome. The itinerary of shore excursions was also very good. We thoroughly enjoyed everything - except being in our cabin when the ship was underway. We slept poorly due to the noise and thus were tired during the day and had difficulty enjoying the excursions. From this experience I would have to warn anyone away from spending the money to have the top suite. Maybe going downstream there is less engine noise. I would do the trip again but not in that cabin. Read Less

Viking Cruises came highly recommended to me by my friends in several different groups, so it was easy to select the Danube River cruise with my companion. The recommendation was warranted! Two things impressed me right off, Viking's attention to detail right down to the small stuff (like good design of cabins, things many guests might not even notice) and Viking's corporate culture, always welcoming and accommodating. It was great to have staff address me by name by the second or third day. Impressive! I especially appreciated the open table seating at meals, as it was a great opportunity to meet new guests every time we sat down for meals. And a little humble humor here, no other guest was "stuck" with me for a whole week! Viking River Cruises are a great way to travel with little worry about arrangements. From arrival greeting (at the airport and longboat), to shore excursions at each port, to not having to pack and unpack along the way, to Viking staff confirming my return air travel and providing easy transfer to my departing airport. On this trip, my favorite port was Passau, Germany. Just the right size bowl of porridge, not too big and not too small, to explore more in depth. An opportunity to self tour for a little deeper cultural immersion should one make the effort as I choose to do when I travel. I also enjoyed my extension in Prague, Czech Republic. Yes, I took the panoramic tour to familiarize myself, though my greatest pleasure was going off-line by myself, away from the crowds, the shops and the more touristy spots to engage with citizens of the Czech Republic on a deeper level. Amazing what you can discover this way! I'll not hesitate to recommend Viking River Cruises to all my friends whenever cruising comes up in conversation. Thanks, Viking. Read Less

the Ship was surprising in the layout, design and function; and the staff hands above those on the big cruise ships. The people make all the difference. The majority of the excursions where better then we had expected and several last minute opportunities turned out to be the HIGHLIGHT of all of them. The palace tour was way too hot and crowded in Vienna, and we skipped the Abby tour entirely because we simply were too tired to get off the boat. Traveling through the locks was amazing even for someone like me that works in maintenance facilities of a large power station. Their staff is beyond professional, they have dedication almost to a fault. the entertainment OFF ship and brought on board the ship (2 separate times) was likewise excellent, the family horse farm in Bavaria for the Biergarten were delightful - hell everyone on was. The pianist that provided the daily and evening entertainment was enjoyable but they could use a different schedule for each night; hearing the same tunes in the exact same order got to be somewhat laughable. The food was simply fantastic, and the service spot on. the only down side was the packaged air travel arrangements - they have no flexibility and they notify you far to late for you o make any effective changes. I use Delta almost exclusively for the air miles, yet they put me on swiss air, while our friends were put on Delta - when asked about changing even the seats we were simply told to take it up with the airline - which at the 6 week mark was sold out solid and we were basically told too bad. with those 2 exceptions - it was possibly the best vacation we have had.... Absolutely Amazing once again!!! This was my second river cruise and second time on the Viking Jarl. The ENTIRE crew on the Jarl are what helped make this another trip of a lifetime. Their commitment to customer service is outstanding. Everything from the embarkment, dining, onboard activities, lounge, rooms, service and excursions were top notch. I had a couple days in a hotel in Budapest prior to embarkment and a day in a hotel in Bucharest after disembarkment. Everything was handled beautifully regarding airport pickup and transfers and the hotels were lovely. I highly recommend this amazing itinerary to those who want to see what the rest of Eastern Europe is like further down the Danube. FIVE COUNTRIES - Beautiful landscapes and amazing people. For those who are looking for castles and grandeur won't see the typical European display but there are so many other wonderful sights and sounds to see. The Iron Gate is breathtaking!! Lots of handcrafts, folk, and history will delight you on this trip. Read Less

A European river cruise has always been on our" bucket list". When the opportunity to book it with friends arose, we did not hesitate. From start to finish, everything went ultra smoothly. The ship, the cabin and the remarkable crew, the incredible food and service were exemplary. The ports and the excursions were a truly unique experience-so up close, informative and personal. I would not hesitate to "jump on board" again. We felt as though we were truly "royalty"! I have never experienced a group of people who were there to wait on us but yet felt as if they became friends, taking care of our every whim and need. I have recommended, to anyone who will listen to me, that they definitely experience this most wonderful adventure for themselves. If something could be done to make the weather perfect every day, it would indeed make the voyage even more positively wonderful. Read Less

We had a wonderful time on this river cruise. The ship was excellent, the food was excellent, the service was excellent, and the cities we visited were exceptional. We chose this cruise because we had never been to Budapest or Nuremberg. The room was adequately sized and appointed. It was the Viking Jarl. The dining was excellent as I stated above. Roger and Jahz were fabulous. The were very attentive and knew what we needed before we did. They made the trip. Also, Neli kept our room clean and neat. We visited Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg and Passau, Germany. At each port we took the walking tour and learned the history of each city. We also too the Nuremberg Jewish tour and learned of the trials of the Nazi war criminals. In Passau we visited a horse farm and a lovely beer festival. We look forward to our next trip and it will be on Viking as they have the best overall package we have found between the ships, personnel, cities visited and service. Read Less

We noticed the Viking long boats on prior trips to Hungary and Germany and thought it may be an easy way to journey without continual packing and unpacking. It certainly was much more than that. From the pre-cruise stay in Budapest and post cruise days in Prague, Viking made our journey easy and enjoyable. Airport transfers were welcoming and efficient. The Jarl staff was always attentive and gave us worthwhile suggestions along the way. Dining was superb with wonderful choices and serving portions. The house wines suited the meal offerings and were adequately poured. Our waiters Jezz and Roger quickly learned our preferences and anticipated our needs. The stateroom attendant, Donia(?) was efficient and more than helpful with some special needs. He appeared and vanished as if by magic. The local guides on our excursions spoke fabulous English and were informed on the sites we visited. Most offered their own insights on their lives growing up in Europe and in Communist Europe now democratic relating the difficulties of both eras and the transition period. There are numerous locks on the cruise. We suggest watching the entire process of the lock journey with such a long boat. One afternoon, we watched as the Jarl entered the lock and then waited as a sister ship came along side without a bump. The space between is a foot or two. Just amazing to witness. See Europe the easy way! Read Less

I was searching for a memorable way to celebrate my wife's 70th birthday, and a cruise on the Romantic Danube fit the bill. We started by arriving in Budapest two days before check in date. We loved Budapest and it became one of our favorite European cities. The buildings were amazing and the people were very friendly and helpful. The cruise itself far exceeded our expectations. The Viking Jarl is a beautiful ship, our stateroom was very nice, and the staff was great. The food was delicious and the ports of call and shore excursions were all exceptional. The only glitch in our first river cruise came complements of Mother Nature. The water level was too low for the ship to sail to Nuremberg, so most of the passengers were bussed to the city and then back to the ship in Regensburg. About eight of us who had early flights the next morning remained in Nuremberg where we were placed in a hotel. We were given vouchers for dinner that evening in the hotel, and the next morning we were all given box lunches and transportation to the airport for our flights. My wife and I have made several ocean cruises, but this was our first river cruise. We hope to do more river cruising, and we look forward to doing it with Viking. Read Less

Needed to get away, paired with a major price discount and a desire to Visit Budapest again, plus an opportunity to visit Prague. This was my 4th river cruise, my first on Viking. The ship was great, the service okay, but the entertainment was horrible. The sole act, a pianist, was rescued only by a passenger who had professional singing experience. The included shore excursions were the standard walking or wine tasting variety and mostly okay. The nicer excursions, however, were quite expensive and included some that were free on an identical Vantage cruise. I'm used to river cruises being more all-inclusive and felt that Viking was working very hard to squeeze every possible nickel out of the passengers. The wine was good but did not flow as freely as on any of my other river cruises. As a retiree who goes on many cruises, I will probably go on Viking again but will be very careful to manage the total cost. Read Less

My wife and I have made many trips to Europe. Previously when we travelled, we prepared our own itinerary, made our own arrangements, carried our own luggage, etc. A few years ago, we decided to spoil our selves and took two land (bus) tours, which made things easier, but we still had to pack each night to be able to move to the next hotel on the following day. Further, we spent the good part of the day travelling from place to place. This year we decided to try a river boat cruise, and heard great things about Viking. We were not disappointed. In fact, everything about our experience exceeded our expectations. The included airfare was a bargain. The ground transportation provided on our tour of Slovenia, from Slovenia to Budapest (to start the cruise), and from Nuremberg to Prague at the end of the cruise was all first rate (note there were only 2 hotel to hotel transfers, which on a 3 week adventure is entirely tolerable). The river boat experience was incredible. It was like taking our first class hotel with us on our travels. My wife and I have food allergies that were accommodated without a problem. The food variety and preparation was excellent. All of the personnel were pleasant, helpful, and efficient. Tours and shore excursions were informative - highlighting the important with enough detail to make it interesting - even exciting, and the tour guides were very knowledgeable. We are looking forward to make another tours with Viking in the future. Read Less

First time to these countries, free airfare was offered, and the timing fit within our calendar. Like the convenience of booking everything with Viking, so everything is taken care of. Some of the excursions were a bit slow for us. I am not one who wants to see a new country/city from a motor coach. I'm not that old yet. When we have more time for vacations, we will definitely consider extending our trip. More time in Budapest was definitely needed, too much of the tour was via motor coach. Food and service are outstanding. The crew bends over backwards to make your vacation an unforgettable experience. The beer and wine provided at meals is a wonderful touch, and one we greatly appreciate. We have already booked our next Viking Vacation. This cruise was not what we expected from the advertising. Very structured. Often the included excursions were basically narrated bus rides (we were on buses so much that my husband and I came up with the condition "bus butt.") that simply drove by famous sites giving a glimpse from afar (example: golden Strauss statue used in ads-- it was pointed out to us from about 500 yards away as we drove down a main street of Vienna.) We chose to stay on the boat in Nuremberg rather than sit on a bus. A highlight of each excursion was being dropped by the most prominent local church. We were very disappointed at the "free time," which was often an hour or less. The best experience we had was a Mozart/Strauss concert in Vienna, which we had to purchase as an add-on, and since we reserved it before the trip because we were warned it might sell out (scare tactic!),they would not allow us to use the $400 or so we had on our account (we had already paid every cent for the cruise and air) and had to charge it to our credit card. I felt that was very tacky. We knew there was a possibility of water levels making it necessary to pack up and switch boats--which happened on our trip--but a Viking official told us it was very common. The food was the worst cruise food I have ever had--it was very salty at times, and the steak both my husband and I had one night was poor quality--tough and full of gristle. Only cookies were available outside of mealtimes. The wines served at both lunch and dinner, however, were very good. Dining staff couldn't have been better...superb.The tour guides ranged from excellent to so-so...it was the luck of the draw. All seemed to hate the communists but one seemed to have a soft spot for Hitler. I can't say enough good things about the staff on both boats--excellent! About the sulfur--you can't avoid it. If you're sensitive to it, you're probably going to be sick (happened to my husband). Getting from the airport to the boat and back was very efficient...Viking does an excellent job in this area. We chose this cruise because we had been on an ocean cruise and wanted to try something smaller, low key, more personalized with a renowned cruise line, which Viking is! We chose this specific cruise because of the itinerary and the locations we would be visiting. We met the nicest people on board and ended up spending the majority of our time with 4 different couples each from a different state. We all just clicked and it was a first time river cruise for all of us. On a larger ocean cruise with other cruise lines, there would be 4,000 people and more with not much chance of being able to get to know people like we did on this small cruise. The staff was outstanding!!! They all worked so hard to make our trip unforgettable! The waiters was fantastic! We usually sat at the same table for meals and we really got to know the waiters. We had some dietary restrictions and they were extremely accommodating, even coming to me each day to give me the menu and ask what I would like and they would make it gluten free!! They were so funny, charming and always remembered all of our names!! The shore excursions were perfect. We learned so much about the history of where we were. We loved sitting on the top deck locking out over the beautiful green countryside and hills, with all of the beautiful quaint homes, big churches and castles as we rode down the river. Another great experience were the many lock we went through! That was our first time experiencing those and it was fascinating to see how they worked. We highly recommend a river cruise with Viking! It was one of our top vacations ever! Looking forward to doing it again sometime in the near future! Read Less

Basically this is a cruise for older adults, not for children. The service from cruise team was amazing. I would suggest going a little later in the year as weather would be warmer. We had to wear coats each day. Outstanding educational experience. Extremely enjoyable and memorable. Great pics. Our every need was quickly satisfied. The food was, without exception, fantastic. It was served by the friendly and courteous wait staff, and was always hot. The activities director was absolutely superb. We had fascinating speakers and demonstrations that were relevant to the locale we would be visiting. All, and I emphasize all, the tour guides were most knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. They had a wonderful amount of details about the community not often heard on a tour. The best thing about the cruise was the small group of passengers. by the time the tour ended, we were like family and this includes the crew. Even though the tour was billed, Romantic Danube, my cousins and I enjoyed it as a family. There is so much to recommend: friendly, attentive service; delicious and healthy variety in dining experiences; organized excursions with knowledgeable guides with great personalities; but most of all, the convenience of having room, board and transportation taken care of means a traveler's time can be spent enjoying beautiful scenery, architecture, history and culture of these special cities and towns. A special surprise was exceptional weather for this time of year and a variety of Christmas markets. Finding unique gifts with the flavor of each country or region was the icing on the cake. Even though our ship experienced a mechanical difficulty, the program directly quickly organized several options so that we could enjoy time ashore while the problem was being fixed. The only thing I would do to improve the experience is to offer a cruise that allows more time in places which need more than one day to explore such as Budapest and Vienna. Read Less

Of all the excursions, Gottweig Abby was my favorite. It wasn't overrun with tourists and the views, people and nectarine products were amazing. It was so interesting to hear the history and see the beauty of this place. Although we didn't spend as much time in port as I thought we would, the time cruising in the evening was usually very pretty and we had one afternoon with some great photo ops from the boat. One of the best things we did was break off from the tour group in Regensburg and Passau. We decided to do that after having no time to explore on our own in Vienna and IMHO the tour wasn't that interesting. The service was generally good, as well as the food. I don't drink which is unusual I know, but the lounge staff stopped asking me what I wanted to drink about 2 days in when I didn't order anything alcoholic :-/ I have to say our room steward made up for that by being amazing! She was friendly and gave us great service and great tips about going on shore ... it was like having our own concierge! We handed her a huge tip just for her we would not have like the trip half as much without her. While I would not make this particular trip again, I am considering a river cruise in France since so many of the other passengers recommended the cruise that goes to Normandy. TIP: If you want to explore Budapest you HAVE to get the extension. Otherwise you get a bus tour with 2 very quick stops. And the Budapest currency, the florint, is not needed. Everyone excepts Euros and almost everyone accepts US dollars. Read Less

If you needed any help with anything at all they would go out of their way to see that your needs or concerns were taken care of - our maid, Martina, didn't just clean and turn down our room, she brought my wife ice for her sore knee, extra pillows and just anything else we needed. She was by far the best at her job that we have ever encountered. The food was outstanding in terms of selection, taste and quality. It rivaled any five star restaurant that I have been at. The ship and the rooms are well laid out and very upscale. We had a balcony but didn't use it much because of all the presentations, entertaining games and other places to sit and socialize with our fellow passengers while watching the outside views at the same time. They don't have amenities like a pool or a workout room but you wouldn't have time for on board exercise anyway because you spend so much time walking while touring the various historical, architectural and cultural sites in each of the cities you are visiting. If you have an appreciation for great architecture, important historical sites and the cultures of other peoples, you will love this trip. Almost all the local people that we dealt with were polite, considerate, informative and very interesting. Sometimes complete strangers that we came across on our tours and walks would greet us in a friendly manner. We looked at several of the other river cruise companies and chose Viking for 2 reasons. One was that if we booked and paid in full, our flights were free and the second reason was after talking to some people who had done river cruises, Viking sounded like it was the best choice. We were definitely not disappointed. Embarkation and disembarkation were a breeze. The ship is beautiful and the cabin was clean and comfortable. The local guides were friendly and knowledgeable and the tours were enjoyable, informative and just the right length. The thing that was the most outstanding was the staff :,from the Cruise Director to the wait staff,to the cabin stewards,to the kitchen staff to reception to crew. Friendly and efficient!
