Don't mean to sound negative, but didn't have the fantastic experience so many others report. Airport pickup at Budapest went well, as did the pre-cruise experience, despite poor weather. Guide for Jewish Budapest one of the best on entire trip. However ... Had no lunch on embarkation day as it was supposed to be provided on board. We were a bit late arriving at the dock, so nothing available until dinner that night. Many passengers in larger groups, so a bit awkward at mealtimes; not to say we didn't encounter many nice, interesting folks, just that they tended to gravitate in their groups. Staff were unfailingly nice, excursions very well presented, although one guide I found very political. Director did a terrific job advising of photo opportunities from ship, as well the lock process. Food was adequate, if not outstanding. Breakfast the best omelettes I've run across, lunch a hybrid salad bar + pasta station, along with ordering from a menu. Dinner was truly a mixed bag. Soup wasn't just broth-based, but downright oily. Fish was very good, but meat selections not so much. Dessert varied from terrific to ho-hum. Want to give the staff full credit for being zealous about catering to dietary needs - at breakfast they made a point of consulting with passengers to plan the day ahead for them. We were warned ship wifi wasn't the fastest. Unfortunately, my phone signal did not work well in the cabin, though off the ship it was fine. Laundry a bit expensive, but prompt service with good results. Held several hours on boat for last transfer to Munich Airport, cutting departure closer than I'd have liked. Not sorry we went, but just didn't get the "Wow!" factor. Read Less

We arrived in Budapest 2 days early. Fanni and Andrea were wonderful. Great concierge service. Gave us great ideas and directions. Agnes took us on the Taste of Budapest tour. She was a wonderful guide. Carmen in Melk was also a terrific guide, wonderful sense of humor. On our post extension tour to Salzburg and Munich, Fred was so knowledgeable and was an outstanding guide. It was also interesting to take a brief bus tour of Marcos' home town (Oberammergau). Friends ask us what was our favorite part of the cruise. Difficult to say...too many choices. All shore excursions were very organized. Cabins are a little small. Next time we would upgrade to a suite with veranda and French balcony. Wonderful service. Dining room staff were top notch. We celebrated our 50th anniversary on the cruise in Vienna. The Dining room staff made it memorable. The pre-cruise hotel (the Corinthia in Budapest) was an elegant hotel. The post-cruise hotel (Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg) was wonderfully refurbished with huge rooms. The Munich hotel (Hilton Munich Park) was a typical business man's hotel, but walking distance to a bier garden, and restaurants. We would definitely take another river cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise upon the recommendation of several friends that have previously cruise Viking. I will list the pros and cons for our 15 day journey below: Pros: 1. We were very pleased with the personal service provided by our Cruise Director, Rob and our Concierge, Tamara. 2. Most of the remaining Ingvi staff were friendly, hard working and appeared to really enjoy their day to day work. 3. Our Chef was amazing and the food exceptional! 4. Our sailing in April was a very good choice as the water level of the Danube, Main and Rhine were high so a ship swap was not necessary. 5. As the Viking Ships are small we established some close friendships as a result of our cruise. 6. Our daily stops were excellent and our included tours very interesting. 7. Our Cruise Director and Concierge accompanied us on the shore excursions even in inclement weather. 8. The included wine with Lunch and Dinner was enjoyed by all. 9. Our German theme night was truly fun! Staff dressed in German attire and exceptional German food delicious. 10. We did a 3 day pre-cruise extension in Prague that was truly amazing! Cons: 1. We did have our top balcony closed down for five days due to low bridges as a result of the high water level. 2. Our bedding was not changed for the entire 15 day journey. Not sure whether this was just our cabin or routine for the cruise line. 3. We went through 68 locks on this transit. At first the entry and exit of locks was interesting but near the end of our journey they were a great deal less so! 4. Our evening entertainment on most nights was a piano player. Unfortunately his accompanying vocals were those of a poor Karaoke singer so we did not spend time in the lounge after Dinner. All in all, we will definitely consider Viking for future travels. We enjoyed the cruise immensely. There was one major thing that we should have payed more attention to. First we had a great time in Budapest , our embarkation point; however, we spent maybe a couple of hours in Amsterdam, our destination port (at the airport). To do over we would have stayed a day or two in Amsterdam (and not part of the extended tour). The cruise itself was great. Good food and excellent service by both the cabin attendants and the wait staff. Some of the land tours were a stretch--seemed like the tour guide was wasting time; but overall they rated very good. Take advantage of some of the optional tours-- The Hungarian Horseman, Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna, the Mozart Concert, Rothenburg ob der Tauber (a must see) and the BMW factory are all worth the extra money. We started our cruise with 3 days in Prague, organized by Viking. They had a desk manned 12-13hrs a day at the wonderful hotel they booked us into. They were very helpful getting our British Airways lost luggage back to us. We had a newer, clean bus to take us from Prague to Budapest, where the river cruise started. The Viking cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam was fantastic. The ships were almost brand new, the crew and the meals were wonderful. Through no fault of Viking we had to swap ships halfway along the route, as the water level was too low in a stretch of the Rhine/Main canal for the ship to navigate. A sister ship was coming the opposite way from Amsterdam, so they took a bus ride from their ship and we took a 3hr bus ride to their ship. Luggage was all handled and the new ship was exactly like the one we had just left. The local guides at each port were fantastic and very knowledgeable of their area. Meals on and off the ship were excellent and tours were arranged to accommodate almost all levels of fitness. Embarkation and Disembarkation were as painless as these two activities can be. Only two words of caution. If you are used to large ocean type cruises you will need to get your head around the idea that this will be a totally great but very different experience. The river ships are smaller and do have the amenities and staff of larger ocean ships. Also we do not think the cost of upgrading to a full balcony on the small ship is worth it. Many times we docked we were 2-3 ships deep and the only thing you saw outside your balcony was another balcony. Read Less

Booked this cruise 1 1/2 yrs before taking it. We did a pre-cruise 3 days in Prague thru Viking and it was wonderful. Fantastic Viking staff right in the hotel where we stayed - Hilton Prague. The hotel was within walking distance of the old town (a must see) and was great. The transfer to Budapest from Prague was well organized and was on new Viking bus. We sailed first on the Viking Alsvin and then the Viking Ingvi, identical sister ships. The staff and service on both ships was great and the food was 5 star all the way. The excursions at every port we stopped at were very well organized and the local guides conducting the shore tours were very informative and very professional and range from a university student to a retired German military officer. The cabins were small, but then again are river cruise ships. They were well appointed and the cabin staff did a wonderful job. Not much to say about Embarkation or Disembarkation except they were as painless as this process of getting on and off the ship can be. A words of caution. If you are used to Ocean Cruising you will have to get your head around the fact that this is a totally different experience. The ships just do not have the size to have all the amenities found on ocean ships. There is a smaller staff, no pools or hot tubs and no large theatre productions. However the ability to see all the wonderful sights along the way is great value for the money. Also because this is a river and not the ocean the ships are far more susceptible to changing river levels. We need to swap ship half thru our cruise because there was a section of the Rhine/Main canal that did not have enough water to allow any ships to pass. Viking also did a wonderful job of this transfer between ships almost painless. Viking made some compensation thru an open bar and made some optional cost shore excursions free. However be aware that changing water levels, either too high or too low may affect the transportation mode you will actually use for your trip. Read Less

This is our 2nd cruise with Viking. Our 1st cruise was in Russia in July 2014, which we loved immensely. No wonder, we booked our 2nd trip with Viking. We loved the itinerary, the land excursions, the food, the hospitality. Howver, there were certain pitfalls: in our 2nd day in Buda, we were horrified to return to our meeting point to see the bus was leaving. Our local guide did not do a head count. We list our way, trying to take a short cut and was 5 mins late! This has never ever happened to us! We had to take a taxi back yo the boat! We were never told that the bus cannot wait! The ship was Ingvi. We sailed along the Danube, Main and Rhine into Amsterdam. In Vienna, in the tour of Schonnbrunn Palace, the Guide told a time to meet in front of the ticket gate. Thank god I was listening in the quiet box. He started the tour 5 mins early. We had to run to meet him. That was done again, without doing a headcount to make sure everyone was present. In Passau, we were informed of the low water level in Danube and had to change ship in Regensburg and boarded Alsvin. I hate to say: but the food and service was much better! In Ingvi: there was a limited choice of dinner for my wife. she is not fond of Steak, veal, pork or salmon! Unfortunately, the fish she took smelled a little. She was unable to eat her main meal. Same thing happened in Russia River cruise, the waiter was very nice and got something which she was able to eat. We were shocked to hear from the waiter that " He cannot do anything. Have some dessert". We thought that was most inconsiderate and unprofessional! That was the waiter in Ingvi. In contrast, the waiters and waitresses in Alsvin were nicer, friendlier and more courteous! Read Less

It was recommended by several friends that had already taken it. It was important for us that it was a small cruise oriented to more mature people, navigated on a river, offered excursions in every Port, and everything was practically included. It was easy making reservations and getting more detailed information from the very professional travel agent from Viking. The ship was elegantly set, with many inviting seating arrangements, an upper Deck geared to socialize. Our suit Veranda AA was so comfortable with all the necessary amenities, and a lovely balcony. Dinning was compared to a five stars restaurant, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, the food was incredibly exquisite. The attention of the staff was also beyond expectations, not only they learned all our names, but they had a genuine smile on their faces at all times, and were so attentive and gracious. The entertainment after dinner was lovely and so much fun. We went with one of our daughters and son in law, in spite of being the youngest ones on the trip they also had a terrific time. The cities in the different countries visited, and the excursions on very comfortable buses, were a phenomenal cultured experience, completed by the expertise of the tour guides. Viking made the whole trip from beginning to end smoothly, enjoyable, and unforgettable. We are looking forward the next one. Read Less

It's impossible to describe the many excellent things on this cruise, the cabin, the crew, the entertainment each night was very good, the food was too good, and the tours were unbelievable too. We opted for the pre-cruise extra days in Budapest. Our hotel was marvelous and right in the middle of everything we wanted to see. All were a short walk away. The restaurants in the hotel and in the vicinity were all excellent too. Food on board was always well prepared and served by the staff in a very efficient manner. The choices were always great and I can't say enough about the choice of beverages at every meal. Entertainment was good too. Each evening program was well thought out and pertinent to our voyage on the river. Very entertaining at each stop. Our first cruise on a Viking river boat will not be our last one. We have already signed up for another cruise in fall 2018 and optional post cruise visit to a nearby city. Read Less

I wanted to see a snapshot of Europe in order to pick a country to go back to and spend more time. This cruise covered so many places that gave me an over view of Europe that it more than fulfilled my needs. The cabin was perfect with the slider so I could view the life on the river - water fowl, homes and towns. The dining was certainly adequate and knowing that the most gourmet foods are not always possible on a boat. The crew were very personable and remembered me during the trip which was so kind! The towns where the cruise stopped exceeded my expectations of European towns and the tours in the towns covered many aspects - culture, history, etc., which pleased me. It was a joy to have laundry service on the trip. I think Viking does an excellent job on their cruises and I hope to take another one soon. Read Less

Cruising the Danube River was something on my wife's bucket list. What an incredible journey it turned out to be. Starting in Budapest, we explored the city on our own before setting sail as well as taking the cruise provided tour. The included tours were very good and provided many highlights of all the ports we docked in. We took advantage of all that were offered and added several on our own. The highlight was a bike tour through the Wachau Valley wine country. Spectacular views at a leisurely pace. There were about 180 passenger aboard with a crew of 49 to attend to our needs. Very good service all around. Bartender was very knowledgeable. Food was very good. They offered local fair from all the ports we passed through which added to the romance of the cruise. Nightly entertainment was provided by locals which added flavor to the journey. We met some very nice people on board. Service was wonderful. After our final stop in Passau, we spent an additional 3 days in Prague. Great city. I'd recommend this cruise as a way to get a taste of Europe along one of her famous rivers. Read Less

We wanted to try a river cruise through Central Europe , and Viking has a great reputation. Though the embarkation was not easy - we arrived in Budapest two days early on our own - we walked to the assigned dock not knowing our ship had been relocated for the World Cup FICA competition being held there starting that week. The ship is beautiful. It is comfortable, well appointed, easy to get around, and our cabin was very well designed and surprisingly spacious. The food is very good, though not of the same variety as an ocean cruise. The included excursions were all top notch; the guides, transport, itineraries, and durations were all great. Entertainment, while limited, was very good, and always engaging with the guests. The land portion of our cruise, to Salzburg and Munich, was very well organized and as enjoyable as the rest of the cruise, with 5-star hotels in both cities. We were given plenty of time to ourselves to see the sights outside of organized tours, as well. We hope to join Viking again in the future! Read Less

We had never been on a river cruise before, and we had never been to Germany, Austria, or the Czech Republic. This cruise was the answer! All the Viking shore excursions were excellent, but the most important thing became the 6 friends we came to know on the cruise. They made every meal a delight and every tour so much more fun. Our greatest disappointment was that we only had one day in Vienna. One needs at least two days in such an amazing European capital. Viking should work on this and make sure to include at least two full days in Vienna - perhaps, three! The funniest entertainer was one of the ship’s employees. He was German and he was a great comedian. I know - it sounds like a contradiction in terms. The “singer” was so-so, but the pianist was outstanding. The after dinner entertainment could have been improved a bit, but, honestly, we were so tired, bed sounded good! Read Less

Sail was smooth and on time perfectly. Dining experience from a comprehensive breakfast buffet with optional waiter service, a two venue choice for lunch, and immaculately presented and tasty dinner dining experience, every request and allergy catered for, nothing was too much trouble for Cruz the maitre D and his unified and positively cheery crew. All tours had local guides with an immense knowledge of the Cities, customs, history and colourful stories that made every destination enchanting. The housekeeping crew on board are exceptional, every detail in our stateroom was attended to, and the speed and efficiency that these crew work at is an immense achievement all co ordinated by the super competent Marina. Clean, organized & well run. our cabin was just enough room for two people and the food was excellent and plentiful. The entertainment was always very good, but one evening was extra special when our cruise director David was the entertainment. First time with Viking and will not be the last, we are booked for the Holy Land in 2018! If that tells no one how we see Viking let me explain. The trip on the Ingvi was a great experience. The crew seamed to be able to read minds anticipating our request before the were asked. They were not overbearing but always available for any needed help with anything truly superior service. The Dining choices were great with local fare and old staples served in a very pleasant unhurried atmosphere. I for one have not been catered to any finer anywhere I have ever traveled. The excursions were as explained in the literature with no surprises. We could have spent more time in some places but we would not have been able to see all the places we saw if we had. The add on trip to Prague was almost as nice as the Ingvi with great accommodations at the Hilton and great food choices also. I was very interested in the European history and the areas that this cruise was covering. I do have one suggestion to add and that is not to have so much leisure time when visiting a site. For Czechi Kremlov, we had about 2 hours for lunch and leisure time. Whereas that could have been shortened by an hour to give us time to visit inside the castle. This tour was around the castles and not being able to visit inside the castle was disappointing. I think a better planning on the time would be much better received by your customers. We really enjoyed the intimate setting and staff's attention to all details. Our tour coordinators were great and we can not say enough for their dedication and knowledge to serving your guests. The size of the ship allowed us to get to know many of our shipmates and gain lasting friendships. There were many local specialties as well as other international fares available. The waiters always had very solid recommendations. The excursions were excellent. We were very impressed with the former Eastern cities like Budapest, Bratislava, and Cesky Krumlov. Our favorite days were in Cesky Krumlov and Salzburg. We are 3 couples who usually cruise ocean ships but decided to travel across Europe by Viking Riverboat. As our excitement grew during the planning phase, we were joined by two other couples of friends. We were booking fairly late in the season so were lucky to get 5 cabins close together on the lower level. None of us had ever cruised with Viking before. We all thoroughly enjoyed the adventure and have become fans of Viking. All five couples are senior and do not share the same interests or physical abilities. We found the Viking cruise allowed us to be a group but still have independent activities. We requested and got the one table large enough to all of us for dinners so we ate together, sharing tales of our adventures that day. Actually we found another guest who was 93 traveling alone and managed to get him at our table as well. Our independence began with embarkation: three couples did the Viking pre-cruise tour in Budapest, another came one night early and booked their stay themselves and the fifth couple came straight to the ship from the airport. We all very much enjoyed Budapest. We all experienced a very easy embarkation procedure. Most of us usually travel in cabins with balconies so we were not sure how we would like rooms on the lower level with high windows. We all found this to not be an issue. During travel on the river we found going to the lounge or up on the outside decks offered an opportunity to see both sides of the river and gave the added benefit of enjoying visiting other passengers, A feature which we really enjoyed were the included tours. Viking usually includes one at each stop. All five couples used this basic tour to get an overview of the city or village and then we each did our own things for the rest of the time. One couple did extensive hiking tours; 3 couples often signed up for the optional tours in the city while the fifth couple stayed on board reading or touring near the docked riverboat. We enjoyed the itinerary across Europe, getting a good feel for the land as it changes across the countries. I remember our excitement at encountering the first lock but soon we were veterans of passing though locks and began assessing them on depth raised or lowered, as well as the length and size of the lock itself. By the end of the cruise we were talking about where we could go for our next Viking cruise. This one on the Viking Ingvi just got us started! Read Less

Although not the cheapest. The attention to detail was first class. Every port an included excursion was arranged with local guide. Food on board was very good. Cabin small but adequate and comfortable. Evening entertainment was limited. Have already booked for a sea cruise with Viking. The staff were really friendly and soon got to know your preferences. Travelled from Budapest to Amsterdam. Although some on boat were disappointed that there was no chance to explore before disembarking but to be fair to Viking this was explained in brochure and they did offer additional stay option in a hotel Free wiFi was patchy at time but we were travelling on river between signal. Large to had on board cameras and also offered a range of films Wine and beer served at lunch and dinner was plentiful. Coffee station available 24 hrs a day Would recommend to others.
