Seduced by masterful advertising we decided on a Viking cruise of the Danube. As a result of posted concerns about river levels, I waited until virtually the last minute before booking. Ten days before our intended cruise on September 4 I called Viking and asked if there were any problems with river levels. I was assured that there were not. Just to be sure, I asked our travel agent to confirm this with Viking before we committed. Our agent also received assurances from Viking that there were no problems. Only after receiving these assurances did we book our cruise. Four days later we received an e-mail from Viking advising that due to "unusually dry" weather there were historic low water levels on the Danube. As a result we might have to take buses between ports. This was the situation we had sought to avoid by waiting to the last minute before booking and by checking with Viking before committing. Upon receipt of the e-mail warning from Viking, we immediately called our agent and asked to postpone our cruise until the following Spring when there would be less chance of low river levels. Our agent called Viking only to be informed that we had signed a contract and that we were therefore bound to take the cruise scheduled for less than a week later. We did not ask for a cancellation of our contract, merely that we be allowed to reschedule our cruise. Viking refused to allow us to reschedule. We did in fact have to bus and to change ships during our cruise. In fact the staff on both Viking ships we were on informed us that, due to low water levels, ship transfers and busing between ports had been required all Summer on the Danube. Clearly the customer service people at Viking ought to have known this. To be fair, the onboard staff handled the required ship transfer very well and the general level of service onboard the two Viking ships we were on was very good. However, we felt deceived by the reservation staff of Viking and by its bullying that we had to take the September 4 cruise or lose the total amount we had paid, which was over $20,000. I don't know if this is a common occurrence or was somehow connected to the low river levels but on at least 4 occasions we were rafted to another Viking ship which resulted in our veranda being unusable as were were mere inches away from another stateroom. In fact we had to keep our curtains closed so as to have privacy from the stateroom on the other Viking ships. Having paid extra for a veranda, it was very frustrating not to be able to use it. Instead of tying up at idyllic villages and watching river traffic floating past us, when we were not rafted up to other ships and therefore able to see out our veranda window, we were on several occasions tied up at industrial areas looking at lorries, cement mixers and other unappealing sights. This is not what we expected from Viking's advertising of its river cruises. In addition to the foregoing annoyances, when we arrived in Amsterdam Viking would not allow us to board the half empty bus leaving for the airport advising us that, as we had booked a "deviatiion" return airfare, we were not eligible for the bus ride to the airport. This despite the fact we had paid extra for the deviation; we had to go to the airport to pick up our rental car as we were staying in Europe for an extra ten days; the bus put on by Viking was going to the airport anyway and was half empty. This was a minor annoyance admittedly but having paid over $20,000 for a misrepresented cruise I naively still expected better from Viking. Would I take another Viking cruise? Perhaps, after the sour taste from this one has evaporated. The onboard staff were excellent, the meals were very good. The house wines were generally good. All this suggests we should give Viking another try. However, the on board scenic commentary and entertainment, such as it was, was very average. Before booking another cruise with Viking I would undertake more thorough due diligence and I would definitely not rely on representations made by the customer service and reservations staff with Viking. It is my impression from our experience and from reading other posts on this site that Viking's modus operandi is to sign up as many customers as possible and then hold them to their contracts despite problems with water levels and Viking not being able to offer the cruise as advertised. Viking's apparent policy of offering a 25% discount to disgruntled customers who raise a fuss seems less than generous when that discount only applies to a portion of the total fare and must be used within one year. How many people are financially able and are prepared to take two expensive cruises within a one year period? I expect very few people are able to take Viking up on this offer and therefore Viking comes out a winner achieving a considerable profit on the original cruise and only a slightly less profit from the few passengers who take the marginally discounted cruise the following year. I urge anyone considering Viking, or another river cruise line for that matter, to undertake thorough due diligence before booking. Read Less

Never been to Europe and never been on a river cruise. Been on several ocean cruises and really liked the “smallness” and tranquility offered by the river cruise. Selected this river cruise because of its itinerary. We were more than pleased with the quality our rooms and quality/variety of our meals. Because there were less than 200 people on board, we got to several people over our two weeks plus we got to know many of the staff. Excellent choice of tours to take at each city and the guides were all very, very good. All the tours were well-organized and the transportation to all the tours was comfortable and organized well. The evening get togethers in the loungewete both fun and informative.Breakfast choices were excellent as were the lunch choices. I also really enjoyed sitting on my veranda in the evenings when we were cruising because it was so peaceful. Service was awesome and I will do another Viking river cruise in the future!! Read Less

Organisation was superb many thanks to our program director Kane Davies..a wonderful guy..must have worked 24 hrs a day. Wish they had spent more time at main places. Prefer coach tours...see a lot more as you travel in the day..get used to packing your bag every day or so but you get used to it and only use clothes each day so you keep packing to a minimum. Food not as flash on coach tours and wine and beer not included but half the price for a month. Will stick with coach tours. Food available was superb...plus wine and beer...tended to stay with menu food as very nice and smaller portions. Comfort and information on the boat was excellent. We had heard from our neighbors and friends about their fantastic experience with Viking River cruises and had been on our ever expanding bucket list for "to do" things. We finally did it in June of 2018. It was a 15 day Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. It turns out that the cruise turned out to be better than our extremely high expectations. We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality, service, and the worry free cruise. The crew was fantastic. It felt like we were with our loving and caring extended family. The included excursions were more than we would have asked for. It was convenient and educational having not to worry about what to do and what it is going to cost. The food was exceptional with compliments of wine and beer. We are taking another Viking Cruise on Dec 13 to Cuba & Panama, and one in May of next year. We love Viking Cruises; they meet and exceed our expectations. Read Less

Program Director Wez was a delight! So helpful and fun and talented. Food very good (Chef Jan should have his own cooking show!!!). Special meal representing each port was great fun. Our head waiter, Normandy, was so attentive. Loved being able to have a quiet continental breakfast out on deck too. That was a great option. Ports and tours perfect. Evening special entertainment events were really enjoyable. The day tour guides were so knowledgeable! Would have liked more narration on areas we were cruising past while on board though. And were not happy with tipping being requested (and somewhat pushed by front desk staff) with special envelopes rather than included in the overall price of the cruise. Accommodations and assistance with our add-on in Amsterdam were great. So glad we did that! Read Less

I highly recommend this trip. We are actually looking at doing it again but in the opposite direction. We were in the lowest level on the boat and the rooms were fantastic. Good sized closets, excellent shower, fridge, television and comfortable beds. Also very nice shower products (leave your toiletries at home) Viking is very organized from the time you embark to disembark. I would look on the television every morning to view the menus for the day so I could toss around what I was going to order as many days it was hard to chose and everything sounded so good. Chef Jan would come to the lounge every evening before dinner and give the chefs recommendations and explain how the food was prepared. Chef Jan also had a sense of humor. The lounge had music every happy hour and then again at 9:00 pm for dancing. they would change the themes nightly from Country and Western, Classical, and Rock and Roll etc. There was always something to do in the afternoons after our daily tour. There was an afternoon English tea one day and another the Chef demonstrated on how to make strudel. The waiters in the dining room and the lounge were excellent. They quickly learned your tastes to be able to recommend a wine. We purchased the Silver Spirits package in our own currency and it was well worth it. The shore excursions are well managed and there was never any line ups to wait in.We met lots of very nice people and we now have new friends. Another great thing about this trip is there are no children allowed. Viking is there to great you at the airport to take you to your hotel or boat and there at the end for your return home. My only complaint is that I gained weight due to the great food. Read Less

We totally enjoyed our experience from the beginning to end. Thanks in large part to the crew and our amazing Cruise Director Wez. He was funny, well organized, creative, and attentive. Amazed someone so young handles the older cruisers with such ease. The Captain and his entire crew were gracious, warm, and friendly. They were obviously good at what they do. It was apparent that they all enjoyed what they do and too great pride in their service of the passengers, our safety and comfort, and in keeping the ship in excellent condition. The food was plentiful, loved the variety, and was always well prepared. Our Executive Chef Jan, was hysterically funny, as well as a great leader for his crew. So many of the servers were above and beyond in their service as well as engaging and funny. Meal times were a delight! The shore excursions were well planned with local guides that provided fun little insights and most were humorous and helpful. The ship was gorgeous, well maintained, clean, and bright and cheery. Our stateroom was well laid out even though it was a bit small. We had a small balcony which we enjoyed relaxing on many times. The cabin and bathroom were very clean and they were cleaned and refreshed 2 times each day. A big part of our enjoyment was the group of fellow passengers. We met some wonderful people that have become friends and we’ve had fun times nice we returned back to the United States. It was worth the money and we’ve booked a Viking Ocean Cruise in 2019! We have wanted to do a european river cruise for a very long time. The Budapest to Amsterdam cruise fit many of the countries we wanted to see. Viking picked us up at the Budapest airport and bussed us to the boat, no muss, no fuss. We found our cabin decorated in what I call Swedish modern, sleek and pleasing. We both loved the bathroom, the heated floor was well beyond what we expected. There are two eateries on board: the main dining room and the Aqauvit “cafe” at the bow of the boat. We ended up eating all breakfasts and most lunches at Aquavit because it was like eating at a sidwalk cafe except the sidwalk was the river. We could eat while watching, hearing, and smelling the surrounding countryside slide by. The main dining room was a great meeting place for dinner. The large tables resulted in seatings of groups of people that started the meals as strangers and ended up as friends. Most nights the main dining room offered aregional menu in addition to the standard menu. The Regional menu offered a chance to try local cuisine that would never be available at home. In most cases it was a pleasant surprise. The on board entertainment was uniformly excellent. The two person lounge combo was thoroughly professional and had a breathtakingly broad repetoire. Viking brought in opera singers and a glassblower for unexpected types of entertainment. There were frequent historical seminars, usually as preludes for the next day’s excursions which greatly helped understand the history behind the excursion. When we booked this cruise we were aware that the Viking river cruises were ranked number one. We quickly found out why. Everyone we encountered from the Captain, to our room Steward, to the restaurant and bar serving staff, to the deckhands, were always pleasant, always had a smile, and always tried their utmost to be helpful. The crew made this a gold star cruise. The shore excursions added the local touch that we were looking for. The tour guides hired by Viking were all local residents that had deep knowlege of the subject of the tour they were leading. Each of them had their own personal spin on the subject of their tour, which kept the tours from feeling “canned”. As a consequence, just about every tour contained information that would be hard to find in a history book. Fifteen days, five countries, sixty eight locks traversed, fourteen hundred pictures taken, a million smiles. Read Less

We travelled on Viking 3 years ago and our friends have heard all the stories. 2 of them asked if we wanted to go again with them from Budapest to Amsterdam and there was no hesitation, we accepted. Our only problem was getting to Budapest, we were delayed leaving by 2 hours due to weather, and so missed our connection but we were rebooked on 2 new connections and arrived only 4 hours later than scheduled, though our luggage didn’t make it. No problem, the front desk was on it, I was on it from another angle and by morning we had our bags. The crew was fantastic. They got us robes, slippers, and toiletries as we didn’t know if/when the bags would show up. They also threw in free laundry while the bags were missing, though we didn’t need it in the end. Viking cabins are small, even the “larger” cabins, but that's OK because you are not in there except to sleep, change clothes, and shower. The lounge and sun deck are where most time is spent when on board and are more than adequate for the 190 or so guests on a full cruise. We had 178 on ours, which included a crew from Discovery Channel doing a show on our ship, to be aired in the fall. We were on the top deck of rooms and had a balcony, barely wide enough for a chair but still useable. We tried to sit at the same table every night or close by so that our wait staff could get to know us, and they did. Always friendly, efficient, and eager to get something for us. The food was very good and reasonable portions, though our chef tended to make dry cakes and other baked desserts. A fellow passenger mentioned it to him and he ignored her, blamed it on the recipes, yeah right. The bartenders in the lounge were also excellent. The waiters in the lounge were mixed. One lady and one guy were good but the others were hit or miss, frequently miss. Get to know your bartenders, you might find free wine/beer times with lunch and dinner get extended a bit and if you get them to join in late night dancing, they can be really fun and generous on your next pour of a drink at the bar. I usually don’t go for a lot of the entertainment, but it wasn’t bad and several local entertainers were brought on to give us local tastes in music or activities. There was a free walking tour included at every stop, which we found adequate. Our friends did some extra excursions that they enjoyed, but one of them was 4 hours each way on a bus so it was a long day for them whereas we relaxed after our walk and enjoyed the scenery and the quiet. We booked the trip a year in advance, and did get a more expensive room, but it was worth it. Breaking it down to a daily cost and remembering that our air fare was included, it wasn't that bad for a 2 week cruise that included excursions, food and some drinks, travel to each port, and hotel all on 1 ship. We each got a $100 voucher for another cruise, which turns into a $200 on board credit when we use it. No expiration date, transferable or refundable. You can’t go wrong. Also, nobody under 18 on board, so it's quieter than some cruises we have been on. My favorite? Cruising the Wachau Valley and the Rhine with all the castles, almost a new castle around every curve on the Rhine. DW Read Less

My partner was a "newbie" and not sure that he would like a cruise. So, our friends and I suggested a Viking River Cruise and it proved to be an excellent introduction to the cruising experience. The cruise itself is a premium experience. We sailed from Budapest to Amsterdam and everything conspired to make it a memorable trip, including the weather. The cities along the route were all interesting and the included excursions were well-passed and staffed by locals who knew their locations intimately. The ship was top-notch, with excellent dining choices and pleasant on-board entertainment. One highlight was the cruise through the Wachau Valley of the Rhine where, for 4.5 hours, we sailed past many river towns and hilltop fortresses and castles with a delightful intermittent commentary by the program director. My partner is now ready to try a sea cruise, though he still wants to stay close to land. So, we're considering a North Sea cruise. Read Less

We truly enjoyed our cruise but were very glad we brought along three things: a deck of cards, raincoats, and our dear friends. The ship, staff, and food is all great. The itinerary was fine. The problem we had was at just over 50 years old we were the second and third youngest on the ship (a daughter who went with her parents beat us for youngest). By far. This meant that all excursions were with a more “senior” group-lots of bathroom stops and endless questions. Please, please, please Viking-have an app for each city so that not everyone has to be in groups. This is not difficult nor expensive technology! This also meant meals and entertainment was always with “seniors”. Believe me when I say by 9pm (no typo) the ship was asleep! We got to know the excellent bartenders. They could not have gone out of their way, been more professional, or more fun. Besides the tulips they were the highlight! We had ordered the beverage package (order before you leave US or it is more expensive) so the bar tenders knew us well. There was nothing they wouldn’t get us-even at dinner they brought wine “they thought we would like better and enjoy”. Terrific. Unfortunately, we were not docked in downtown Amsterdam. We were about 15 min away in at a very industrial dock. So much for the view from our veranda! However, this also was a hassle for us because we like to do things on our own (a huge shock to the crew who could not believe we would rent bikes, see the tulips, go to dinner, go to Belgium all on our own). This meant cabs or taking the shuttle bus offered. Not convenient but it is in your brochure literature- not that that makes you feel better when spending so much money on a cruise. We were there for peak tulips. They were fantastic! We know we were very lucky. We also decided since tulips have a kind of their own we would arrive in Amsterdam early with the pre cruise package at the Hilton near the museums. We also planned it so we would be there for the tulip parade (trust me when I say it is quaint and nice but the Rose Bowl has nothing to ever worry about. We were glad we went but could have missed it and not been sad. It is quite small by US standards. Think garbage trucks and delivery trucks with flowers on them. Four or five great floats and the rest ...well, let’s just say it is nothing I would plan a vacation around. We rented bikes outside Kuekenhoff and it was a breeze and lots of fun). We were VERY glad we had seen the ore our cruise. We saw them on a picture perfect day (go as early as you can as it gets very, very crowded. I think we saw a thousand buses...not kidding) and took tons of pictures. On the day we saw them with our cruise it was cloudy, rainy, and the flowers were just a tad past peak. We felt quite smart for our planning and quite sad for the people on our cruise! We used Uber to get to the gardens and I think it was 35 Euros for the four of us (don’t try getting back by Uber after the big aparade....trust me when I tell you it took hours- luckily, there was a pub ). We thought the entertainment on the ship that was local and brought on board was really, really good. Unfortunately, the nightly entertainment wasn’t the best. Sweet couple but again-sang songs for those of the crowd that were 75 plus. We played cards. A lot! Food was quite good. Interesting and varied. They tried local food and wine as much as possible. I appreciated that. My husband loved going to the battlefields (I went to the Kroller Muller and ended it) and thouhgt the local guides excellent. We loved Hoorn, learning about the levies, home stay (we brought a small gift-do as our hosts were delighted), tulip fields, biking, guy who made wooden shoes and the farm visit, music, wine, cheese, chocolate, All in all, we really liked the cruise. Our weather could have been better but it was April in the Netherlands. We have talked with others that have done Viking cruises And they all say to try again. They also say that this cruise tends to skew “older”. Even Viking says that. Yes, yes it does! The thing is-you don’t go far on these river cruises. You can drive in a short amount of time. With that in mind it is the service, views, food, etc that matter. Unfortunately for us, we really couldn’t use our Veranda (I wouldn’t bother except that we were on the same floor as everything which was great) and only went on the top deck once. I guess my only other pet Viking peave is the tipping. For the love of Goodness Viking-just pay your guides a little more and do away with tipping. It is most annoying! I’d rather my cruise be $50 more and not to have to worry about bringing Euros to tip the tour guides. Plus, it is very awkward as some people tip and others don’t. Ok one more thing....Viking likes to cruise at nigh because then their guests have longer in port. Which is true. However, when you dream of your Viking cruise after seeing thousands of tv commercials you do think you’ll have more time relaxing on the ship as it motors along. You don’t really on this cruise. And the ports are very industrial. Not the quaint town ports you dream about either. Read Less

We were glad we did. the ship, crew, dinning, entertainment, service and accommodations were super. Better than we could have imagined. Entertainment on board was great. The ports and excursions were spectacular. We added some additional excursions after our trip began. The only drawback we encountered was that some guides did not want to be filmed. I'm a videographer and two of the guides on our trip did not wish to be on camera (they didn't same why). However, they did not have a problem with other guests in our group using the cell phone to shoot video. There problem seemed to be that I was using a professional 4k camera. Except for the one drawback with the use of a video camera, everything else was great. My wife and I are currently looking over Viking Cruises for this year. My husband, my sister-in-law and her husband and I, chose the Grand European River Cruise so that we could see ports the way the ancient merchants did. My travel companions had all been to Europe before, and saw places that they'd never been as well as a few they were delighted to visit again. Viking Cruises gave me my first European experience, and I was entranced by the beauty of Hungary, Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. Layers of history were peeled aside at each town and city by friendly tour guides, creating a desire in all of us to learn more. Traveling by cruise ship was an unexpected delight. It was freeing to visit so many places without dragging our luggage to each one. After a long day of exploration, we were absolutely pampered by Viking staff with delicious gourmet meals and a glass of wine. We could relax with new friends, entertained by the excellent "Jazz Bites" duo, or retire to our attractive stateroom, kept fresh and clean daily. Luxury accommodations, served meals, and having someone do the itinerary planning for you are all wonderful things, but without a stellar staff, such as we had aboard the Viking Gefjon, none of that would matter! Thank you Attila, Zeljko, Dejan, Stanislava, Marvin, Alan, Petar, among so many others, for making my first trip to Europe so memorable! Read Less

This is not a fan fair cruise, like you would get on the Giant overloaded 3500 people Cruise Ships. The good thing is that Viking does not advertise it as that. They are advertising a relaxing, do as you please and enjoy with option that you can or not take. The Cruise line can not control when the Water is high and they have to close the upper deck, just like big ships can't control hurricanes or bad weather that comes up. So get used to it. The ship has Room for up to 180 guest, they have a crew of 60, so every guest is well taken care of by the second day the staff will know your name and your likes and dislikes.that is not necessarily the case with a crew of a 1000 on the big ships . The food is excellent, with a mix of food for all cultures likes, served in the main dining room or in the Veranda lounge, again the attention to details by the Staff is second to non they all do multiple jobs in order for you to enjoy this relaxing getaway, plus free beer and wine during the assigned dinning hours. You will not get that on the giant Bucket ships, you're one of many, just a number. Are the rooms on the smaller side, yes but not any different then the big ships or some overpriced Hotels as far as that goes. No this is not a cruise for kids, take them on the big ships where there is plenty for them to do and experience. So get of your horse and enjoy the world of river cruising. As a side note I have been on 25 cruises around the world and the river cruising is the best way to relax and enjoy. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my Thoughts. Read Less

We moved into a community of active cruisers. Having never river cruised, they explained what we were missing, and the Viking Gefjon cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam proved them right! From the welcoming at the airport, outstanding hotel for our pre-cruise stay, to the final sad moment of heading home, their attention to detail, and our happiness, never diminished. Our 3rd floor balcony cabin was cozy yet comfortable and any extra request was completed by Monika with a warm smile. After a day, staff greeted us by name and so began the feeling of extended family that spread to all on board. Having only 190 passengers made dining and excursion adventures delightful! The menu was exceptional, and we particularly enjoyed the local cuisine and wine pairing. Stephan, Stephan, and Lucia were always ready with tempting options from the bar! The staff, from captain, Sam delightful cruise director, to head chef (who took us to the local outdoor market) and all others, were the best coordinated cruise team we have experienced in our 34 years of cruising! We were quite impressed with the quality of the included excursions, giving you options for additional tours, or time to cruise the beautiful towns and meet the locals (and taste the great beers)! Truthfully, it will be quite hard to return to big ships! We will certainly be enjoying more Viking cruises. Thank you Viking Gefjon for making our first river cruise spectacular ❣️ Read Less

We chose to cruise on Viking because of our dear friends' recommendation. They had a wonderful experience, and since we share common interests and values, we thought we would as well. We chose wisely. This voyage on the Viking Gefjon was the trip of a lifetime. From the moment the Viking staff met us at Budapest airport, everything was delivered with excellence and friendliness. Our stateroom was beautiful and spacious enough to afford plenty of storage and comfort. The steward who cleaned our room several times a day was so efficient and helpful, it was hard to say, "Goodbye," to him on our last day. The staff on the Viking Gefjon led by our program director, Sam, is unmatched I am sure. There was a chemistry among the staff that spilled on over to the guests; we all had a golden time together. The food was delicious and varied. There was always a choice of eating either in the terrace restaurant or the dining room - and sometimes it was hard to choose, both were such lovely settings with great food. The shore excursions were handled in such an organized manner. It was impressive. Each of the guides knew so much history and were so proficient in English. They were passionate about their villages and towns and countries. We learned so much history from all of them. The on board entertainment was lovely; there was always something to do. Watching the beautiful European countryside go by from the sun deck was a highlight for me, but it was also fun and relaxing sitting on our veranda as well. As soon as we arrived back home, we started dreaming of our next Viking cruise. I am excited to travel again, but this experience will be hard to beat. Thank you Viking Gefjon staff! Read Less

Our first Viking River cruise. We chose a river cruise to try the smaller Viking experience and it was a great decision. We sailed from Budapest and did a pre-sail visit which was exciting. The town was beautiful and we saw many different sites in both Buda and Pest. We thought the prettiest site in Budapest was the nite cruise up and down the river. The ship was absolutely immaculate and looked as if it had just been launched. The cabins although smaller then the Ocean cruise were very comfortable and absolutely spotless. The staff was amazing and made us feel like we were family that just stopped by for a visit. There were 10 people in our group so one can imagine the discussions and ordering challenges at meal time. But to the staff's credit, they never got a meal wrong. Most impressive was by the second morning the entire dining staff new all of our names no matter where we sat at the table. The food was excellent and there was always something that would fit your tastes and the size of your appetite. Stefan and Lucia always did an outstanding job keeping our glasses full with beer, wine or other creations. Every day was an adventure into a new city (port) with its own culture that went back in time. The surrounding countryside offered spectacular views as we sailed up the Danube through the locks toward Amsterdam. The highlite of the daily activity was Sam, the program director. He was extremely funny and made us all laugh. He clearly enjoyed his job which means the trip is more enjoyable for the guests. Sam is by far the best program director we have seen to date on any cruise line. He is a fantastic representative for the Viking organization. We will definitely go again with Viking. Thank you to everyone on the Gefjon for making a trip more enjoyable. Read Less

After having been on three other Viking cruises, I expect Viking to provide the best in service, good food (and wine), safety, comfort and a crew that comes on like we have been friends for some time. "Can I help you?" I hear over and over again. Many times they ask for input and ideas, so that they can improve and/or do what's best for their travelers. I especially enjoyed excursions we experienced that gave us a taste of the local culture. We even had local entertainment onboard our vessel which was really special, and offered us a chance to hear great music and enjoy their dances and stories. Because there are a small number of guests, as compared to large ship ocean cruises, you meet and make friendships with people from all walks of life. They also may be from many countries around the world. When we would return from an excursion, we would be met by the crew with chocolate, or water and a cold towel if the day was hot. Nice touch yes? I like surprises like that! Read Less

Traveling on a Viking Cruise was my grandmother's idea and thankfully she invited my mother, my aunt and I to travel with her. It was a wonderful experience to travel with 3 generations to the incredible ports we visited; however, it was the Viking crew that made our experience so memorable. My grandmother is 91 years old and there were some excursions that were more challenging than others, but our cruise director, Sam, always went above and beyond for us to keep her included in activities or to be frank and let us know that she should relax on the ship instead. The whole crew made all of us feel like royalty, they knew what we liked to eat and drink and just made us feel so special. The ship is just the right size so that you get to know many of the other passengers and by the time the cruise is over, it feels like many are family. The food was delicious at all of our meals and the bar staff were so accommodating and fun that they felt like good friends. Our cabins were nice and always clean. I can't wait to go back on another Viking Cruise and highly recommend it to others! Read Less

All the ports were wonderful and the history was very interesting. The ship personnel was top of the line and very helpful. Dining was out of this world. The excursions were all very well organized. Viking did a wonderful job from the time we arrived at the airport until they put us on the plane to return home. The Ship design is great for passengers. The dining and activity area is across from the our rooms and that made easy to got to activity and eating areas. Much different from the big Cruise Ships we have been in. This is much better! Each evening before the next day the Activity gave us a great talk on the excursion activities that helped understand were and when to meet the next day. Also he described what we would see with help us understand what to wear. The entertainment was great with acts from the locations we visited and also social games where we all could participate if desired. We definitely enjoyed this. In summary we had a great time and intended on doing another cruise very soon! Read Less

What can i say. All our needs were handled in a superb manner and i can honestly say, no need was unmet. The cruise director was great!!! and was very thorough in telling the guests in detail the events of the day. He is a great asset to Viking and to the Gefjon in particular. Shore excursions were great.....entertainment wonderful, and dining/food great at all meals. Was surprised with a birthday celebration that was requested by my roommate and it was so nice and fun. Even my bed was decorated with happy birthday. My roommate wanted to know how our room steward knew which bed i slept and when asked he rolled his eyes and with a big smile said, "I know everything"!!! we had a good laugh. Thank you to all staff for making sure the guests had a great experience and I think all of us did. Been on many ocean cruises but this was my first river cruise and it was everything we expected and more. Looking forward to the next one. Thank you. Read Less

Recently retired and wanted to experience a river cruise. Was attracted to the high end cruise line, the ability to experience a cross section of Europe, and the reputation of Viking. This cruise was also highly recommended by a colleague. The only minor downside is that we tried to do too much, booked too many excursions and had little free time. Dining aboard ship was excellent and all ship staff were outstanding in their friendliness and professionalism. The weather during the cruise was mixed, had some cold and wet days but this is no reflection on Viking. Book later in the spring or in summer for better temperatures. On the positive side was that the cities, towns, and attractions visited were not overly crowded as they can be in the summer holiday season. A couple of the shore excursions were rather fast paced and felt rushed, but they were certainly the exception. Overall an excellent cruise and worth doing again. Read Less

This was our first River Cruise and we celebrated our 27th Wedding Anniversary. The shore excursions were enjoyable as well as educational. Thomas Leitner was knowledgeable and fun both prior and during the shore excursions. We enjoyed Budapest and wished we could have spent several more days exploring this beautiful city .The husband and wife duo was very relaxing to listen to in the Lounge. Several special groups were brought on board depending on the port . The ship was spotless and our bed was comfortable. We would make our bed up in the morning (military training) and somehow the cabin steward always knew we had left the room and he would come in and make the bed up to Viking standards! A thank your for arranging the distilled water for my Cpap machine. The dining service was excellent and the variety of menu choices was delightful. The wait staff was helpful and suggested choices. I think my husband's favorite dessert was the Rum Raisin ice cream! We enjoyed sitting on our veranda drinking coffee and watching the scenery. Disembarkation was outstanding. A Viking representative took us all the way through customs and got me settled in the handicap area to await wheelchair transport to the gate. I will recommend this cruise and Viking to all my friends and we are beginning to plan our next cruise with Viking. Read Less
