We too had a bad experience due to a broken lock. We shared the horrible port with 3 other Viking ships. Cement factory working through the night. Homeless family living under bridge. Not the picturesque view we imagined to have. We spent three days traveling by bus from boat at dock. Sunday, we traveled 20 minutes each way to see sites ofcity of Nuremberg. Then Monday, Nuremberg to Regensburg(4 hours round trip) - back to horrible port, then Nuremberg to Passau (7 hours round trip)- back to horrible port, then on Wednesday finally on a bus once again Nuremberg to Ybbs(6 hours) to be transferred to Viking Gulliveg. Viking knew on June 22 locks were broken and contingency plans needed to be made. This was the best they could come up with?? Shame on them! More time on bus than traveling the river. Their response? A voucher to use for future travel. No credit for "time served" on buses. No apologies. Just matter of fact.. this is what we are offering. This was our first river cruise. Not sure what was more disappointing...The broken lock with our "port view", Viking's "best" contingency plan of more than 20+ hours on a bus, or Viking's response. Read Less

This was our second Viking cruise and we enjoyed ourselves the entire time, as was the case on our prior cruise. We cruised from Budapest to Nuremberg, and took a Prague Extension for 4 days. The crew was professional, courteous and thorough in all they did. The food was plentiful and delicious. The crew kept us on schedule the whole trip. We enjoyed all the excursions in the various towns and cities. The excursion guides were very knowledgeable and courteous. The various ports were conveniently located and the ship was always at the rendezvous waiting for us. The transfers to and from airports, hotels and excursions were on clean modern buses with courteous drivers and guides. Baggage was handled efficiently and timely. The hotel accommodations were excellent . Our last cruise was Southern France with extensions in Nice and Paris, and everything was on a similar level of quality, we have already booked two additional Viking River Cruises. Next the Northern France Chateaux, Rivers and Wines. After that we will sailing Viking from Paris to Zurich. In both cases we will have extensions before and after the cruises. Read Less

Family Christmas cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest....what a wonderful way to experience the best Christmas Markets in all of Europe. A must for any family wanting to share and create Holiday memories. The Christmas markets are an absolute must, with handmade goods including Christmas ornaments and souvenirs, local foods, mulled wine and great beers. Add in the local history and culture of each destination and it creates unbelievable memories. River locks along the Danube are also a fun and interesting experience as you travel along the river watching the scenery. Viking does it better than anyone! Great cabin accommodations, shore excursions that are included, enjoyable and fun, fabulous service and staff, nice dining and drink options and a great way to see and experience Europe. The ships are comfortable, modern and beautiful. Very relaxed cruising, with no pretentious atmosphere. This was our second Christmas cruise with Viking and we look forward to traveling more with Viking in the future! Read Less

We booked this far in advance in order to see both the sights and the Christmas Markets. Viking did a great job keeping us informed about the low water levels and the workarounds (buses). But even after the “final” ship/bus itinerary was announced, we were fortunate to get enough last-minute rain (8 feel of water added to the river in 48 hours) that the original all-cruise itinerary could be maintained. Kudos to Viking for what had to be a lot of behind-the-scenes logistics! The three-day pre-cruise addition in Prague was well worth it, and the Art Noveau Palace hotel had a great location (easy walk to the Old City Square), excellent room amenities (more electrical outlets than a typical American hotel), and a fabulous breakfast buffet (including multiple gluten free and vegan offerings). This being our second Viking river cruise, we expected top notch friendly shipboard service from the crew and first-rate food. We were not disappointed in either of those two respects. The one-star rating for Fitness & Recreation is not Viking’s fault. It was just too cold to use the sun deck at all, which was empty throughout the trip. Read Less

European heat wave while we were there. The excursions were incredibly hot temperature wise, so much so, that I had to take frequent breaks whenever I could find shade. We were there during a drought of sorts so we were not moving for the last three days. That's fine; they don't have control over that; I completely understand that, but it felt like the excursions were then just thrown together and some were cancelled, of course. A few of our excursions included a local meal...the food was just not good (I'm being polite) which included the Sound of Music tour lunch. It was so incredibly hot during these lunches, as well, that I couldn't enjoy the food. The places we went were nice, but no cool interior air. I wasn't happy with 7:00pm dinner time. I would have liked a choice, at least, to dine earlier, but I knew this going in. I thought it would be ok, But dinner was usually over around 9:00. I will say this...they have great food choices, but when I asked the waiter one night to have my salmon cooked medium rare (as it was completely overcooked the day before) he replied with "I have no control over that; they all go in at the same time." I didn't like that response, but took my chances, and yes, it was overcooked again. I just didn't order that again. Sorry, Viking, it was too hot, but I know you don't have any control over that. They do have an amazing cruise director, Oliver. The bartenders were outstanding. The housekeeping service was also great. Read Less

Several friends took this same cruise on the Romantic Danube months before; they just raved about how great it was; that we just had to go. So glad we did! We heeded their great advice of arriving a day early and staying over an extra night! How relaxing! In addition to all of the cruise members performing outstanding, Oliver, our cruise director, went way above and beyond to each and every guests. His last night entertaining performance was way above the top of the entertainment bar! Whatever Viking cruise lines is paying him now; his salary should be doubled! All of the knowledgeable local tour guides provided excellent, insightful, very personal glimpses of each port we were in. The ear pieces, after touching the "lollipop" to activate, was a great idea! The nightly dual food menu options were great. Especially when the Chef offered local cuisine he purchased during our port stay. We always welcomed and generally went with what our waiter, Bob, recommended. Read Less

Our friends, celebrating their 50th Anniversary, invited us to join them on this cruise. My husband gets seasick so we were a bit nervous, but decided to go. The river was calm and usually we didn’t realize the boat was even moving. The cabin was smaller than we expected, but everything was well thought out. The entire crew was excellent; personable, professional, and friendly. The included tours were excellent, though we thought all tours should be included in the price rather than offer extra charge tours daily that often had conflicting times with the included tours. WiFi was frustrating, but we expected that it might be a problem. The food was good and there were a variety of selections each meal. Our waiters were excellent. A suggestion is to serve small plates on the Bavarian night as the rush to the buffet of the entire dining room at the same time was awful that one night. Every evening before dinner our program director, Oliver would give a little talk explaining the next day’s activities etc. He was just great, handling everything with ease, answering all questions, and providing humor and entertainment. We would definitely do another river cruise if we saw one that went to cities we might want to visit. Read Less

My Wife and I chose this particular cruise for several reasons. We both have motion issues when it comes to ocean voyages, so we hoped the river cruise would be more comfortable for us and it was very smooth. Another key attraction to this particular cruise was the availability of a french balcony room. With our quick decision to take a cruise, it was great to secure this great room. The room was snug as expected, but more than met our needs. Storage for suitcases under the bed was a huge feature and storage in general was more than adequate. I also thought the bathroom was very well designed to give the user as much elbow room as possible. Our room was well insulated for noise and very quiet. The ship, Egil, was reserved elegance, classy, not showy. Perfectly designed for giving the passengers a wonderful environment for river cruising. I can't say enough about the crew and staff. Very professional, helpful and friendly, not a combination you always find. We enjoyed getting to know several of the staff members on a personal basis. The food was excellent. Breakfast was a huge feast. They covered all the bases. Lunch was light, as it should be, but very well done. Dinner was delightful every night. I had the "local" meal every dinner and was wonderful. The wine and beer selections were more than adequate. We decided to go with the beverage package--it worked out well for us. The excursions were fantastic. Absolutely loved Budapest and the tour. Some excursions were better than others, but we enjoyed them all. Can't wait to take another cruise with Viking. Read Less

We selected this cruise for the destinations and for the small river cruise experience. It was fantastic! We started our cruise in Budapest....sailed along the Danube to Vienna, Krems, Passau, Regensburg, ending in Nuremberg. There was so much history along the way to learn and to share with others following each excursion. The crew was so friendly and very accommodating. We upgraded to a veranda suite -- it was great! The ship was spotless and well maintained. We did explore Budapest for two days prior to embarking on our cruise. Friends have asked if we'd go on another river cruise -- without a doubt! We were treated royally from the start to the end of our trip. We had a little glitch regarding our return travel arrangements, but Viking resolved our issues accordingly. We are happy to say we met a wonderful couple on our river cruise that we are now planning to take a ocean cruise with them next summer.....can't wait! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the Interesting ports to visit. We added the pre and post extensions to Budapest and Prague. Absolutely loved the section of Budapest where our hotel was located. The Hilton Budapest Hotel was excellent! Lovely room and complimentary breakfast. Best breakfast buffet I have ever seen! The Hilton Prague was not so great. Not a good part of town. The hotel itself needs lots of updating. However, the breakfast buffet was excellent. Hilton knows how to do food! The Budapest Viking Host was excellent. He was informative and professional. He gave us great tips. The Prague Viking Hosts were lackadaisical and didn’t seem knowledgeable. The included tours were very interesting. The guides did their jobs well. I wish we had chosen more extra excursions because they offered more in-depth information. Our Ship program director, Oliver, was excellent and entertaining. The ship’s food was very good. Our accommodations were very comfortable. The staff was friendly and helpful. We hope to go on another Viking trip. I love the small boat experience. Read Less

My husband and I have wanted to do a river cruise for some time. He is from Budapest so we went on the pre-cruise to have time to visit relatives and explore that wonderful city. Viking was amazing in arranging arrival and departure and all activities during our cruise. The ship was perfect, service impeccable, entertainment with Oliver above and beyond. Our cabin with veranda was well designed and very comfortable. Sitting on the veranda as we moved down the river, often so close to the banks I could hear the birdsong, was like being on a huge canoe with no paddling! Going thru the locks was especially interesting for a first time river cruiser. Excursions were well planned and the guides were excellent and very knowledgeable. We loved to dine on the outdoor patio at the front of the ship. And during the cruise we met a group of fun, adventurous couples that made the cruise especially fun. I am still in touch with most of them. We are eager to take another river cruise and Viking will be our first choice. Read Less

This was our first Viking river cruise, and will not be our last. The cities visited were beautiful and fascinating, and all the excursions were great, save one. The food was very good, but not quite as delicious as the ocean cruises we have been on, although we liked the fact that local dishes were on the menu daily, along with some staples like roast chicken, fish, and steak. The ship is every modern and up to date. The service was superb throughout the ship. The evening entertainment was a "piano man" and his computer, which got pretty boring quickly. On two nights, Viking brought in local entertainers, which was fine if you like Opera. We were very disappointed with the value realized during the "Hueringen Evening" excursion, which was supposed to be a local celebration of the wine harvest. Poor wine, little food, and very poor entertainment. When we complained, Viking tried to make it right. Don't let me negative comments scare you off, I still rated it a 5/5, and we WILL be returning. So many people have asked me what I liked best about our Danube River cruise, and I respond the variety of experiences made available by Viking. We got to visit small towns and large cities, explore magnificent cathedrals and humble churches, linger over extravagant meals and linger even longer over simply delicious cups of hot chocolate. Never was there a boring day because Viking thoughtfully planned for, allowed for variety in excursions and free time. So the ports of call were the visual highlights of the trip, and the Viking crew was the pleasant auditory component. From Oliver’s witty pre-dinner evening talks to guides’ riveting commentaries to waiters’ attention to detail and engaging personal conversation, there was always something going on to keep your attention and wondering what joys lay ahead. The only suggestion for improvement that I think Viking could consider is installing more soundproofing materials in the dining room. Conversation was difficult during the dinner hours. Thanks for a dream journey down the Danube. Read Less

We booked this trip over a year ago, chose the room we wanted and we chose perfectly. We had room 324, it was one of the larger rooms, a bedroom and sitting room, two TVs, a much larger shower, very comfortable. The Stewart was in twice a day, restocking the fridge, changing the fruit tray out, replenishing the diet cola and water, he left the wine and champagne just in case we changed our minds and decided to have some. The beds were comfortable and you could set the temperature for each room. The balcony was large enough for two to sit on, and a pair of binoculars were in the room. There is a coffee station on the third floor just outside the lounge, several different coffee selections are available plus hot water for tea and hot chocolate. There is always pastries or cookies provided in baskets in case you get the nibbles during the day. The loung is where you meet up with fellow passengers and the cruise director each night, he runs through the next day’s activities and this is where you find out about the included excursions and optional excursions. We ate all our meals in the dining room, the breakfast had many selections to choose from, from porridge to scrambled eggs, fresh made omlets, toast, pastries, fruit, or you could order off a menu, French toast etc. For lunch they had soup, sandwiches, salads, at the buffet area there was usually a pasta dish, fresh made, or again, you could order off a menu, usually from a selection of two items. Dinner was fantastic, each night there was a different selection, or again you could order off the menu, I did have the steak a few times from the menu, as it was very delicious, ALWAYS a great dinner and the wait staff were fantastic, if you wanted to taste something from the menu, but you had taken the buffet, they brought it to you right away, always, ALWAYS there with water, wine, coffee anything you wanted, you got, can’t say enough good things about them The included tours were very good, nice guides very informative then you would have the rest of the day to discover the cities on your own. May I suggest, if you have on board credits, and you plan on purchasing items from the ships gift store, used your credits early, as we found out, they don’t replenish the items, and I was disappointed twice on items that I wanted to get. When it came time to leave, Viking took us to Prague for our cruise extension, they provided shuttles from our hotel to the centre of the city all day and until late in the evenings, every hour, and when it came time to leave for the airport, a guide came with us on the tour bus, checked us in at our airline, provided us with a box of food as we left the hotel so early and pointed us in the right direction to security, always, they were always there for our needs, what ever we thought we might need or desire, can’t say enough good things about the viking crew. When you returned from the included excursions there was always staff waiters no to greet you and offer either a small hot chocolate to warm you up, or a small treat to help tide you over, totally awesome Read Less

As frequent PBS viewers, we saw many Viking commercials and always wanted to take a river cruise. This cruise met (and exceeded) all our expectations. The weather was a bit cold in November, but the smaller crowds in the cities visited and lower pricing more than made up for the need to dress in layers. We spent a couple of days in Budapest before embarking on the ship and arranged for a layover in Amsterdam on the way home. Both were well worth the added time and the Viking tour bookers were very helpful in arranging the necessary flights. As for the cruise itself, we can't say enough about how organized the trip was and the Viking staff was simply superb. We are already planning our next Viking cruise. We have travelled extensively with various tour companies, but Viking was hands-down the best--just the right amount of chaperoned city tours with plenty of free time. Well done Viking! The food was really good at every meal. We met some wonderful people and have stayed connected with a few couples and plan to cruise with them in the future. This was my first Viking River cruise and it will not be the last. Everything was great and I cannot add anything that would have made it better. We added our own AirBnB at the beginning and end of the tour - Loved the extra time in Budapest, enjoyed touring Buda & Pest and taking in the baths. We purchased a Budapest card and travelled everywhere on public transit. We also enjoyed Nurmberg and a day trip to Rothenburg with a few extended days afterward - we added a hotel right near the walled city - Holiday Inn Express. Perfect Location.. Read Less

The wine steward in the dining room was knowledgeable and helpful. The cruise director was the best we have ever had, he was entertaining, fun and very knowledgeable. We liked being able to get off the ship daily and loved the walking tours, most excursions and or guided tours. We would have liked more variety for entertainment in the evening. The only thing we did not like was the farewell dinner. We were not told that it would be late and a long drive to the venue. The entertainment was good but the room was too small and way too noisy. Anyone sitting at the back could neither see nor hear the entertainers. The food was not up to Viking standard and was served by surly waitresses. Getting back to the hotel at 11 PM was way too late for people having to catch an early flight in the morning so value for money = very poor. Read Less

The Egil was a very nice ship and the staff was top notch. Embarkationand disembarkation were smooth, and the pre-add-on was especially good. The food was excellent. The cabin was as described, although we did not expect our window to be so high that we could not see out of it. We were very disappointed with the scarcity of evening entertainment and the lack of much day-time cruising. We enjoyed all the guided city tours, but felt that two of the optional excursions were not worth the time or money. The excursion to Szentendra was billed as a visit to a quaint arts and craft village, but was actually not much more than many souvenir shops, with a smattering of crafts. And the Open-Air Museum was not staffed with guides to tell us what we were looking at. It was obviouslyy a "work in progress". However, the goulash-making and lunch were great fun. Additionally, the Lipizzaner Stallion excursion in Vienna was a total waste of time and money in our opinion. Our guide was not a rider (as described in the brochure), and at first we were told (not so nicely) that we could not take any pictures, although the guide did get permission for us to do so outside where several stallions were peering out of a stable. Most of us were expecting to actually see a horse being ridden, but the only thing we saw were the backs and heads of the stallions in the stable. We were shown pictures of the stallions performing, but not told much about them. It's always good to learn something, but this was not worth $200, even with the cafe stop! We would not recommend this particular tour to anyone. Even so, we hope to take another Viking tour in the future, but we will be wiser in our choices of options. Read Less

I chose this cruise with the assistance of my travel agent. I had never been on a river cruise and this one began in Budapest which I had always wanted to visit. I was initially surprised that the cabin was small. I would have liked a larger cabin. Nevertheless, my traveling companion and I adjusted. The introduction to the cruise by the Program Director, Oliver Deak, was really informative and I was looking forward to our excursions. They did not disappoint. The excursions were well- organized. They were informative and the guides were knowledgeable. I was able to appreciate each city for itself. The trip to Gottweig Abby in Passau was especially good. Whether it was breakfast on the Aquavit Terrace or dinner in the Restaurant, the food was excellent. No matter what cuisine was being served at dinner, it was a winner. I liked the coffee bar outside of the Lounge. It was available any time. The German night dinner was so good. All of the food associated with German cuisine was available. The staff was wonderful. They were ready to serve all the time. They got to know you and what you liked and were ready with whatever it was when you sat down. The servers in the Restaurant were really excellent. It made dining a pleasure. I liked it so much, I am going to book two (2) more cruises next year. Read Less

We have received advertisements for cruises for ages, but the time was never right. This was the year! We flew into Budapest on Friday night and were met by pleasant and efficient Viking representatives and transported to our ship quickly. Crew members greeted us by name when we arrived (were they waiting for us to make the quick night cruise in Budapest to reach another dock in honor of the country's holiday celebration taking place the next day?). We entered our Veranda suite and were thrilled with the beautiful accommodations. Everything was pristine and first class. Our housekeeper promptly introduced herself and asked us to let her know if we needed anything. She was bright, intuitive and thorough. Our suite was perfect every day. The cruise was conducted with professionalism throughout. Our program director was fun and enthusiastic. I enjoyed his port talks daily because he made the information fun to hear. He was also knowledgeable on the route and made his lectures entertaining. The chef was first-rate and we enjoyed every meal. The chocolate peanut butter crisp will live on as my favorite thing to eat ever! Every crew member was polite and busy but always willing to answer a question or solve any issue. There weren't many issues. Sailing on the Danube was smooth and the skill of parking a ship that size in a lock that was almost the identical size was impressive. I rarely felt any movement on the water. But we saw so any beautiful things as we sailed along. The other passengers were fun and friendly and we met many wonderful folks and will stay in touch with several. We took every included tour and a couple of optional tours. All were informative and allowed us time for shopping or having a cup of cappuccino or a beer. My personal favorite was Passau where we had lunch in a delightful outdoor cafe. The guides were well-versed and presented so many facts and information but made it all interesting and answered questions very well. We also greatly enjoyed a side trip up the Danube Narrows to the Weltenburg Abbey. What a magnificent church! Simply stunning. The organ concert in Passau was also outstanding. The German feast on Thursday night was great fun and absolutely delicious. We enjoyed the entertainment of a couple of talented crew members and there was always something going on in the evenings for those who could stay awake. Disembarkation was smooth and well thought out. We left for the airport on time and in plenty of time for our flight. I am looking forward to sailing another river with Viking. They did everything just right and we enjoyed every minute. Read Less

We did our first river cruise in August on the Viking Egil. We had a pleasant time but not an exceptional time. Wee were very frustrated by three things: 1) we had received a $200 referral credit from some friends who had used Viking but the credit never showed up in our account despite a call to Viking in June confirming the amount and our our August cruise. Certainly feels like Viking pulled a fast one. The worst was that they refused to respond to multiple requests for an explanation. So, caution is warranted when dealing with Viking. 2) Unlike most of the guests on board, I am not retired and needed to work each day for a short period of time. The ship was advertised to have wifi but in reality it barely worked at times. Its 2017. This could easily be remedied by Viking...but wasn't. 3) the beds were not very comfortable. I expected something a little more hotel-like. The tours were very good and the guides were generally great. You can probably get something similar on the getyourguide app. All in all, it was nice but not great. They pulled a fast one with the on-board credit. You could easily rent a car and do a similar trip for a lot less money but the convenience of a cruise will appeal to many. Maybe we'll do another river cruise one in 20 years. Read Less

We took the Danube River cruise from Budapest to Regensburg with a group of friends who travel several times a year with each other. This was our first river cruise after more than a decade of ocean and sea cruises. The Danube cruise, the Viking Egil – and the staff – were wonderful and a very different experience! We took the pre-cruise and post cruise options in both Budapest and Prague and would encourage others to take advantage of these options. Viking made our travel to Europe easy and much less expensive than had we booked on our own, and the arrangements worked out well for us to enjoy a full day on our first day in Budapest. Getting on board (and disembarkation) were both handled smoothly and quickly and made our lives easier. As opposed to boarding a large ocean vessel, the Viking Egil’s crew were quick to load and unload and we were able to get to our cabins and change within minutes of boarding. The ship and its set up were perfect for both us as a couple and for our entire group – we had 56 friends all onboard. We had the freedom to be alone or be with others in the lounge, or on the decks - and we often used the front deck off the lounge for a meeting place. The July sailing was met with very warm weather, only one or two brief rainfalls, and spectacular service. The food and beverage options were exceptional, and we enjoyed every breakfast, lunch and dinner we shared on board. The staff were quick to help and that the service was personal – bartenders and servers took just one service to learn and remember our names and favorites, and encouraged us to take advantage of all the boat provided. Even the captain and operational crew were pleasant and approachable, and the stewards were both friendly and not overbearing. The concierge and tour staff were all knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile to be of service. I must say that traveling with a lgroup of 56 friends was a challenge for the staff and at times for the other passengers, but the crew were wonderful about it and very understanding of our unique needs. On board, the cabin was our base of operations and sleeping center, as we had events every evening and excursions daily – but it was large enough to allow us room for all our “stuff,” and to relax. The bed was extremely comfortable as well. While our group had several independent day trips, the Viking excursions were many and varied – to meet lots of people’s preferences. The logistics were well handled, and we enjoyed every one. As noted, this was our first river cruise, but there are already more in the future plans. Viking – and the crew of the Viking Egil made this trip a highlight and worth every penny! Read Less

We chose Viking because it had the itinerary we wanted and at an excellent price. Best of all, EVERYTHING was included in the price of the trip...including internet (unlike some cruise lines, which charge $75 per minute...) and beer, wine & soda at lunch and dinner. Viking was a class act from the moment we stepped aboard until the moment the cruise ended. Viking went FAR BEYOND our expectations in every way. There was an included excursion at every port...sometimes two, and every time we left the ship, Viking gave us a cold bottle of water so we wouldn't get dehydrated. (Other cruise lines have the audacity to charge several dollars for a bottle of water.) When we returned from our excursions, they frequently had treats for us... The staff was fantastic, service was amazing, the rooms were spotless, the food was fabulous, the wifi was free (unlike other cruise lines that charge $ ..75 a minute.) The excursions, which were also included in the price, were exciting, interesting, educational and fun. The tour guides are well-spoken, engaging, entertaining, and knowledgeable, Viking was a superb value and an amazing cruise! Read Less

Absolutely the best vacation. The entire staff was outstanding, but 4 people stood out. Oliver, the Program Director, was professional, enthusiastic, articulate, energetic, and very flexible. Anything he was a part of was made fun and memorable. Chef Renee, the head chef, was very personable and he and his cooking staff were always on point with the meals aboard the ship. His personal attention made us feel like he cared about my family and I. Additionally, he was a great guide on the 1 tour he guided through a farmer's market in Vienna. Belle, our server in the dining room, and her assistant Ali, were outstanding as well. Their personal attention to me and my family was second to none. We looked forward to breakfast and dinner not only because of the delicious food, but also their smiling faces and eager attitudes. Their superb service made them excellent Viking ambassadors. The only "4" rating was for value. I just thought the costs associated with the optional shore excursions were a bit high. The entire staff of the Ebil made Viking River Cruises very proud. Well done to all! Read Less
