Since we had never been to Europe, I whined to the booking agent that I wasn't going to go unless someone held my hand the entire way! Brian assured me that would be the case...and Viking did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, there were smiling faces to help us with the smallest detail. It was more than great service. Each and every employee we encountered seemed to truly love their job, and they went out of their way to treat us like royalty. It was worth every penny we paid for the cruise. I got sick about halfway through the trip and the program director, Henrietta, personally accompanied me to a pharmacy in town. That was ABOVE the call of duty in my book. (Heads up! Go see a DOCTOR & get full diagnosis/written excuse to miss port tours if you plan to make a claim with the travel insurance company.) I asked Viking handle the airline arrangements. The connections were seamless, however, I learned that you will NOT receive any sky miles credit from the airline unless you book it yourself. Also, we had to leave the ship at 3:30 a.m. YIKES! I was sorry I didn't notice that when I confirmed the reservations. However, EVEN AT THAT HOUR, there was a precious guy who accompanied us to the airport and helped us with everything, thanking us for choosing Viking and wishing us a safe journey home. Thank you, Viking River Cruises and (especially) the staff on the Delling for giving us the trip of a lifetime. Read Less

Marek, the program director, was fabulous -- he was funny, caring, knowledgable and professional. Loved all his programs. the tour guides at each city were excellent English speakers and knew their history. it was great to have the tours, the lunch and dinner complimentary wines and beers included in our package. Viking also took care of us on our three day extension with advice on touring and getting to the airport and checked in. it was so unstressful to be on the small boat compared to a huge ocean liner. I would definitely recommend Viking and the cruise we took. I hope to take another one in a couple of years. only drawback was that there was not enough free time to shop and wander the different cities. Read Less

Outstanding cruise. My wife commented that everything on the ship was exactly what you saw in the brochures -- there were no surprises. I was impressed with Viking's ability to quickly adapt to changing situations: there wasn't enough water level for the ship to get to Passau so we pulled over to the river bank in the middle of nowhere, dropped the gangway and there were 6 Viking buses waiting for us. The ship made it to Passau by the time our tour of the city was finished. Read Less

We chose Viking to be able to enjoy a relaxing vacation without having to worry about the details. We were certainly not disappointed! The Delling is a beautiful ship, well-appointed with virtually everything that we could have wanted. The crew was outstanding – friendly and knowledgeable and took every possible step to facilitate the enjoyment of our trip. The shore arrangements were excellent – we went on several optional trips (the BMW plant in Regensburg and the World War II trip in Nuremburg), which were some of the highlights of the trip. The open seating arrangements at mealtime made it easy to make new friends, many of whom we met up with repeatedly on tours, dinners and other activities. The food was outstanding – great variety and plentiful. Upon returning, we immediately booked next year’s vacation on another Viking trip. Read Less

When we asked our close friends, another couple, to join us on Viking's Romantic Danube River Cruise, we asked ourselves, "What have we done? What if they don't like it? Maybe we should have given this some more thought...." But as the day drew nearer, we were all equally excited, and when we arrived in Nuremberg and stepped on board the Viking Delling, we entered a world of fun and excitement like no other we had experienced before. To make matters even better, we immediately met up with another couple who joined our little group and became "a part of us". New BFFs! Everything about our cruise was wonderful. We had some rain, but it didn't slow us down a bit. The Delling staff rated a "5+" in every respect. They anticipated our every need, and went above and beyond to see that it was met. We stayed in a Stateroom. A little skeptical when we signed up, but delighted to find that, although a little small, the room was designed for comfort and so quiet that you could hardly hear a knock on the door. I would stay in one again without hesitation! The staff was always cleaning and replenishing our room, but we hardly ever saw them. The food was -- what can I say? Outstanding! The chef's menu was always something new and interesting, but also included some favorite standbys as well. And then there was the buffet -- pastas, salads, breads to die for. And I haven't even gotten to the desserts yet! Combined with the conversation of good friends and friendly new faces, we couldn't believe the fun we were having just at mealtime! In fact, I kept seeing myself in the commercial..."And more fun BEING there...! The tours were well-planned, with a choice of moderate walking or very little, and the guides were pleasant, informative, and spoke English almost like a native. The shopping was fun, the concert in Vienna was superb, and the Viennese coffee w/ a chocolate cube, in the sidewalk cafe -Oh! My! Gosh! And then there was the evening cruise around the harbor in Budapest to see the beautiful castles and huge buildings in lights reflected on the water... On the last night, when Peter at the piano cut loose with some rock n' roll, my 82-year-old husband leaped up and started dancing like a 25-year-old! A picture I will never forget! I've saved my last comments for the Hotel Manager, Martijn Kamphuis and the Program Director, Marek Snelly. If they could be cloned for every cruise ship Viking has, it would be a good move! When Martijn sat on the piano and serenaded us with his Dutch songs, I asked if he might have a future in music, and he answered that he would never give up his job with Viking! And Marek just kept us entertained and happy every step of the way. I could go on and on, but you get the picture! Would we do it all again? In a heartbeat! grapesofglass   Read Less

With all the hype of the Viking River Cruise line, I expected more from the cruise. While it was relaxing, and very scenic, there wasn’t much to do on board. No exercise room, just a small walking path on the upper deck and that was not accessible for almost 3 days as it had to be closed to go under the bridges. Not to mention nowhere in their advertisement did they mentioned that we had to go through 24 lock and dams (really). The service was poor to say the least, one night it took us 2 hours to get out dinner, and while wine, beer and soda was complementary during meals, one had to ask for refills, they waiters spoke just enough English to serve you, but please do not ask them anything out of the ordinary as they just did not understand. The food overall was very disappointed as the first night I ordered the chicken, it was like rubber, could not cut it with my knife, breakfast the French toast and pancakes were premade, tasted like cardboard. The excursions were well planned, but would have liked more free time to explore on my own, felt very rushed and for the price of the cruise, I expected more. They should think about new ships they build in the future to include an exercise room, spa and better food.   Read Less

This was a first river cruise having previously sailed on several large ship cruise lines.  It was a very different experience and one that I found quite pleasant.  Here are some of the differences and you can determine if this venue meets your needs: -only 190 passengers; older demographic but most were physically fit since walking tours are part of the daily regiment -many repeat passengers -intimate enough to get to know most of the service crew during the week -crew (mostly Bulgarian) were outgoing and genuinely pleasant; -no shopping spiels- no sales pitches about anything -cabins, while small, were well laid out with high end furnishings -meals were excellent; good choices and nicely presented; one seating at dinner and never felt rushed -tours with local guides were informative and reasonably paced -docked near central part of city at most ports which allowed easy access on and off the ship; no tenders- no waiting -entertainment in the evening ranged from a folk dance group to opera arias- not showboat caliber but culturally more interesting -premium drink package was worth it for our group; not only do you have unlimited top shelf pours for drinks but there is a separate premium wine list that you an choose from that is far better than the house wine; we thought the better wine may the package far better -tour of the wheelhouse should not be missed- must schedule an appointment -no fitness facilities but you can do a lot of walking off the ship Read Less

I guess from all the television hype you automatically expect something out of this world. I think the cruise is very over rated. Don't misunderstand, we had a fabulous time but we were on this cruise with 8 others, with rooms next to one another which can make a huge difference. It was nice to have maybe 200 guests on the cruise as it was more intimate than normal and you were able to get to know some very nice people from all over. The ship is small which makes it easy to get around. Aside from sitting in the lounge or upper deck during down time, there isn't too much to do. However, on the up side, because you are on the river, you get to see some beautiful scenery. The crew was outstanding especially the tour director. She was so accommodating. If you wanted to deviate from the morning tour arrangements could be made. Rules on this cruise can be broken and that's only because you are not on board with 3 thousand plus passengers. Every night there was a cocktail hour but you had to pay for these drinks which I wasn't pleased about. The wine, beer, soft drinks,etc...are only free during meal times. During the cocktail hour the tour director would discuss the next days plans so you knew exactly when you had to be up, etc,,, This was very helpful. The food on the ship was inconsistent. Some nights the food was excellent, others not so good. There was one schedule for meals, usually two hours for lunch and two hours for dinner which was fine until one day because of the time of our excursion, lunch started at 11 in the morning. I skipped breakfast that day and went right to lunch. When we got back to the ship after the excursion we were very hungry. The kitchen is closed and all they have during off hours is cookies, coffee, tea, etc.. We were not happy about this. There should be some sort of healthy snack on the boat, something to hold you over before dinner. Previous to this little episode, I was told by the maitre'd that if we are hungry to just go to the bar and they have a menu and we could get something to eat. WRONG! This was how we found out the kitchen was closed. Most of the excursions were very well done with very knowledgable tour guides. Their tipping guide for the crew, we felt was high, however we gave a certain amount for the crew because all tips are divided and then gave certain crew members individual tips. The up side of the crew splitting tips is that, especially at dinner, you can ask anyone to help you out. It doesn't have to be, for example, your waiter. Entertainment or the lack of, consisted of a piano player at night in the lounge. Since the crowd in the lounge wasn't huge, it would have been nice if the piano player interacted more with the passengers. This didn't happen. Would I do a River Cruise again? It's questionable. If you are looking strictly for a rest and relaxing cruise, then this is the way to go. If you are looking to be busy constantly and to be entertained constantly, then this type of cruise is not for you. We had a great time but were traveling with a fun group of people.   Read Less

My wife and I have now taken two Viking River Cruises and without a doube enjoyed both with equal pleasure. Last year we returned from our first cruise with Viking and withing three wekks booked this year's adventure. Last year we traveled the Seine from Paris to Normandy; a great adventure. This year we traveled the Danube from Budapest to Nuremburg. We had decided to travel to Budapest a couple days early just to get over the travel lag and this was a wise decision. This also gae us an opportunity to see the wonderful city of Budapest on our own. For the citizens of Budapest, you have a wonderful city; thank you! On the day of our boarding on the Viking Delling, we were immediately greeted at dockside by the attendents that took our bags aboard. The receptionist recognized us immediately as returning Viking cruisers which made us feel very welcome. We were excorted to our cabin immedistely and then journeyed to the Aquavit Terrasce for a light lunch. They serve this for all early arrivals. Just a nice touch and this gives you a chance to get acquainted with some other fellow travelers. Our accomodations were as we expected, comfortable, very clean with a veranda. Keep in mind you will not be spending much time in your cabin. Far more places to be than in your cabin that are more comfortable with a much better view of the scenery. We spent most of our time on the Aquavit Terrace, great seats, foods and drinks to go along with the view. The staff were exceptional, all seasoned staff that knew how to make a trip more comfortable and pleasurable for the guest. After a couple days, they got to know your likes and dislikes and catered to that aspect of your personality. Great group of folks. Our cruise director, Merek was an amazing individual that treated everyone as if they were the only person on board. Very entertaining, knowledgable and would turn the world for you if he could. Food stafff were great and always knew when to approach the table to make sure you had what you needed before you knew you needed something. For all those folks looking at Viking, choose your destination and book. The trips are well planned with enough activities to keep you very busy and educatedand and also enough down time to relax or venture out on your own time. We will be planning additional Viking cruises or the alternative Viking Ocean cruise. All that they talk aboput in their literature and videos does ahppen and more. There is no hype to their commercials.   Read Less

Food was mediocre, cabins were average. Problem was that the river was low so the boat could not get through one of the overpasses...so they made us pack up and took an all day bus to our next ship which was much older and not very nice. No compensation. Passengers were boorish (including screaming to the locals who were walking on the overpasses to "jump"; using terms one should not hear about the US President). I couldn't get off the boat fast enough. Do not expect luxury, do not expect a quiet and sophisticated cruise. Tour guides were well educated; and we got lucky because our hotel in Prague (we paid for an extra visit to Prague after the tour) was full, so we got much nicer accommodations. Getting off the boat was the highlight of the trip. After the tour (because they probably got such bad reviews) we were offered a lot of promotions (buy 1 get one free; additional 25% off, etc.) to go on another cruise...never again. Read Less

We didn't know what to expect- this was our first ever cruise. It was practically perfect! Only negative was a day or two of rain, but you can't blame that on Viking! They thoughtfully had large umbrellas available for us to borrow. We had plenty of storage available in our cabin-- very well designed, so the size didn't feel "small". We booked when the cruise was almost sold out, so we had just a standard cabin available. That worked out to be no problem. We were rarely in our cabin (sleep and shower), so we wouldn't have used the balcony much anyway. The food, wine and service: impeccable! The daily specials offered for lunch and dinner were representative of the area we were visiting. If you didn't want to try the local food, 3 other main courses were always available. The breakfast buffets were ourstanding- and if you wanted and omlette or eggs benedict, etc, they were cooked to order. The boat was perfectly clean. The staff, very attentive. The shore excursions-- we had headsets that allowed us to hear our local guide, and he/she could talk at a normal speaking level. In other words, we weren't listening to a canned, pre-recorded speech. The excursions were also very well planned. Onboard, the activities director provided entertainment each day (afternoon, evenings after dinner) that provided information about the local culture of the area we would be visiting the next day. European vacations in the past consisted of following the Rick Steves books. This time, we decided to let someone else (Viking) see through all of the details. It was wonderful to just unpack once, sit back, and enjoy the entire trip. When one considers the cost of travel from one city to the next, transportation within a city to see the sights, entrance fees for sights, meals in restaurants, hotels, etc., to say nothing of language barriers--we thought the Viking cruise was a very good value. This was our first cruise. We didn't know what to expect. We'd seen all of the ads on TV, so our expectations were high. I must say, absolutely everything was perfect. Every detail was carefully thought through, from the moment we embarked until the moment we disembarked. The boat was practically brand new. The staff was very attentive-- they truly wanted this to be your best cruising experience ever, and went out of their way to make it happen. The food was excellent, and with several options for your entree, there was always something that would please every palate. The "house" wines, complimentary with lunch and dinner, were good quality. (We were in the wine business, so we know the difference between cheap wine vs. good wine.) The breakfast buffet had everything you could want, including yogurt made right on board, made-to-order omelets and eggs benedict. The soaps, shampoo, etc., were highest quality. The towels were large and fluffy. The entire boat was meticulously clean. The tours were well-planned with excellent English speaking guides. The on-board entertainment each evening was fun... and educational. One of the best parts: the people we met. We will stay in touch with one couple we met, even though we live on opposite sides of the country. I would not hesitate to recommend this cruise line to anyone wanting to take a river cruise.
