Marek Snelly our cruise director assured this trip was memorable wonderful river scenery, great cities. Any issues due to weather were handled professionally and expediently. As example the river was too low to make the full trip but Viking maintains ships making the Itenary in both directions so we simply packed our bags and Viking moved them to the same room on essentially an identical ship. Marek moved with us which really made the transistion easy. The rest of the crew stayed on their ship. Our plane did arrive late and past the time Viking was providing transportation. We were not quite prepared how to handle this but were able to find a taxi which Viking reimbursed. Since Viking provided the Air it would have been nice if they had been aware of our situation and have been welcomed with an email or some other message telling us specifically how to proceed. Included daily excursions made for a good introduction to each city, and the suplimental excursions were all fairly reasonably priced and well managed. Of course it would have been great to spend more time in each city, but we covered a lot of ground, saw many sites, and visited many places on the 14day trip from Budapest to Amsterdam. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it travelled to countries we thought we'd enjoy viewing along the Danube/ Main/ Rhine Rivers, and we were not disappointed to say the least. We thoroughly enjoyed the city tours and found them quite worthwhile. All the extra excursions were excellent, except for one of the castle tours which we felt was not as good. As well, when not on an extra excursion, it was great to walk into the towns and do our own thing, or simply stay on the ship and relax. The ship and crew were overly accommodating and welcoming. They took every opportunity to help, entertain, direct, or simply chit chat with us, always trying to satisfy all of our wants and needs. The food was amazing! You could order a la carte, or buffet for lunches and breakfasts. Dinners always had a variety of great choices that were often regional specialties made it difficult to decide. Coffee and tea available anytime as well. At night, there was always something going on.... entertainment, presentations about the regions, or just enjoying a drink with dance and music. The trip was an experience everyone should have the opportunity to take. We felt like royalty... highly recommended! Read Less

All services on the Baldur were clearly outstanding and beyond first class in my opinion. Shore excursions were extremely well organized and always on time. Barry, the cruise director was outstanding. Transfers from the airport to the ship and from the ship back to the airport were flawlessly executed. The servers on the ship deserve special commendation and I only wish I could remember their names. The female bartender and part time server was particularly outstanding and mixed my New Orleans' Hurricanes to perfection after learning the recipe from a laptop. The Baldur was expertly guided through about 60 locks by highly qualified pilots and along the entire river journey without any problems. As a result of my great experience on the Baldur, I have booked the Viking Pharaohs and Pyramids tour on the Nile River for March 2019. I hope to experience the same great service, food, and shore excursions in Egypt as provided by the Viking Baldur in Europe. Read Less

The people on this boat were so nice. Both staff and fellow travelers. We felt at home! Budapest was our favorite place. We liked seeing the Hungarian Horsemen. And we enjoyed the optional tour A Taste of Budapest. The Parliament building is truly lovely. And we had some real goulash soup in a local restaurant. The weather was cold and rainy much of the time but we had picture perfect days while cruising the Wachau Valley and the Rhine Unesco Heritage area. They really did look like you see on TV. The walking tour of Wertheim was also one of our favorite things. We were disappointed that we could not access the walking track for several days due to low bridges on the canal. We were not aware that this would be the case ahead of time. We would not do the pre and post extensions again. The hotels were subject to change so were not what we expected. Read Less

Everything about the Grand European was superior, most especially the level of service provided by the crew. We had wonderful meals, fascinating ports of call and made wonderful friendships. We began the trip with a pre-cruise visit for three days to Prague, a beautiful, classic central European city in the Czech Republic. From there we were taken by bus to Budapest to begin our river cruise. The embarkation went very smoothly and before we knew it we were esconced in our cabin. Our trip took us through Hungary (Budapest), Austria (Vienna, Melk and Salzburg), through a variety of German cities ending in Amsterdam. In each city visited we were given an interesting city tour typically by a local expert and offered a variety of interesting optional tours. Often, prior to our disembarking at each port we were offered a talk about the local culture, history and food. All in all we had an unforgetable trip that I would recommend to anyone. Everything about our Viking experience was outstanding. Read Less

The cruise was as good as their ads show. Wow!! We had a great time. Ship was beautiful. Food was great. Service was impeccable. Alexandru & Noel, in the dining room were too much fun. Excellent beer selection. Tours were well organized. Cabin (French balcony) was small but very efficient. Nothing to do for children. No activities. TV has a movie channel, but not much for kids. There were none on our cruise, I could see our grandchildren bored to tears. Loved the fact that nightly briefings on the next day's port did not include the "buy here or there... we get a kickback" plea. Short, sweet and to the point. Dinner is sit where you want and first come first seated. Find waiters that you enjoy and sit in their areas. The bulk of the folks are 60 plus and from North America. You will have a great time. We've always talked about doing something like this. We've been on other non Viking cruises, We're now spoiled. I don't want to be with 4,500 of my closest friends. The river cruise was a wake up call, starting with an impeccable clean ship, the entire crew spoke English and attentive to your every need. Just 170 passengers on board so after two weeks together we have many new lasting friends, you traveled with them on excursions, ate with them, drank with them and laughed with them. Just and incredible journey that will be remember until Viking can top it again. Only one possible suggestion to Viking and speaking as a male, we travel in a country (Germany)that are the mechanical engineering master of the world. Lets see aircraft and automobile museums, automobile factories. That was the only think I missed. But it was a beautiful trip I would repeat again if I could get all the same people together again Read Less

It was our first cruise and it was wonderful. The ship amenities, the crew and the hospitality people couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. They even helped me find flowers ashore for my wife for Mothers' Day. The only fly in the ointment was that there were two elderly spinster sisters in our adjoining cabin, and both had what the other passengers eventually called "kennel cough", a constant hacking cough. The eldest seldom left the cabin, but her sister did, ate all of her meals in the dining room, went on shoreside tours and mingled with the other passengers. The cold or flu or whatever it was swept through the passengers and it bacame pervasive. My wife caught it, got very ill, and had to have her meals brought to her by me in our cabin for three days. One thing to remember is that when you switch continents you are exposed to a new set of germs that you probably have no built-up immunity to. It is wise to bring an emergency supply of things like DayQuil and NiQuil, Benedryl for possible allergies, etc. My wife is Celiac and can't eat any wheat. Our Maitre'd Slavomir was very solicitous of her welfare, and found us at breakfast each day with a copy of the day's menu, which he then went over with her in detail, in many cases pointing out that the Chef could make substitutions or do special preparations for her. He made our cruise on Viking much more pleasurable. Read Less

My wife (and I was included!!) received this cruise as a retirement gift after serving her employer for 22 years. Neither of us had ever been to Europe, nor had we been on any cruise of any kind. The boss of her company personally selected this cruise, because he and his wife had a wonderful experience on a similar Viking European cruise. So, he selected the date, point of embarkation, the Grand European Tour, room 216, etc., and HE HIT THE BULL'S EYE!! The only thing we did was select the excursions and add two extra nights on to our Amsterdam conclusion. The owner of my wife's business could not have known that Rob Wheatley would be Viking Baldur's program director for this specific cruise, but Rob turned out to be the icing on the cake. Actually, ALL 50 staff were perfect (knowledgeable, customer-service-first, tireless, striving for perfection, etc.). One example: The timing on the river is dynamic, so, in one instance, we docked at a town the crew had never experienced. Rob and staff made an adventure out of it, and pulled it off beautifully. They were experts at dealing with the unexpected (rain, water levels, timing on the river, making sure excursions worked in sync with the ship, etc.) VERY IMPORTANT: Since we had not made our travel arrangements, we probed at least 100 of our fellow 150 passengers about their vast travel experiences around the world, including land trips, ocean cruises and riverboat cruises. We felt so blessed to talk to our nearly unanimous shipmates that this was their best experience ever! They were impressed all around, and many also strongly recommended adding a couple of days on to the start and finish of each cruise. We were glad we added two nights on to Amsterdam, so we had the time to take the pre-arranged Viking walking tour, and other Viking advisors available in our hotel. In hindsight, we should have also added a day or two on at the beginning (Budapest), in order to help us adjust to our jet lag at the start, so we could have fully enjoyed our first day. Beyond raving about the cruise staff, our fellow travelers complimented the smooth and modern vessel, the endless food, the entertainment and educational programs (even about the operation of the ship and the river locks, how the galley handled the massive food preparations), and the extensive offerings on the culture and history of each region or town), the excursions and dozens of tour guides, and their constantly being impressed with the staff's constant grasp on every detail of the two-week adventure. This was a life changing experience. Read Less

Having experienced ocean cruising in North America, my wife and I wanted a unique cruise experience and chose a European river cruise. After much research, Viking appeared to be the best option for us as we wanted a luxury cruise experience spanning our stateroom, meals, excursions, and customer service. In short, Viking met and in some areas even exceeded our expectations. Since we had visited Amsterdam several times previously, we chose the Budapest to Amsterdam itinerary which allowed us to embark on the ship and visit Budapest while docked. The proximity of the dock and the city is easy walking distance and allowed us to freely leave and return to the ship as we pleased. This was true for many of the ports we visited on this itinerary and made the experience even better given the flexibility provided. My wife and I went on all included excursions and decided to use our free time before or after each excursion to visit other sites or just enjoy the city we were in. My of our shipmates chose the optional excursions and most spoke highly of them. The Baldur long ship we were on was very well maintained and looked as though it has just been commissioned a few months prior. This includes the staterooms which are comfortably appointed, lounge and dinning areas, and upper deck. During our cruise, we had approx. 185 people onboard and rarely felt encumbered in hallways or dinning areas. Our itinerary (Budapest to Amsterdam), provided so many beautiful sites as we cruised up the Danube and Rhine rivers. It seemed that every day, we saw several historic towns and nearby castles. Many of the castles were located high atop hillsides, so if your camera supports a telephoto lens, I would recommend bringing one on the trip. I used a 200-400 mm lens and found it to be very helpful when attempting close-up shots. The food served during all meals was both delicious and of high quality. Dinning in the restaurant provided the broadest range of foods to eat, however, the Aquavit restaurant at the front of the ship offers an open air experience that is hard to beat during good weather. My wife and I enjoyed many evening meals at the bow of the boat eating shrimp and steak while enjoying our favorite drink as we cruised smoothly up river into a beautiful sunset. For all of the research we did, my wife and I didn't consider the average passenger age might be onboard the ship. While this is never an issue on a large ocean cruise it might be for some on a smaller cruise ship with only 190 people onboard. So, for those interested, the average age on our ship was around 65 years of age, which could vary based on itinerary and time of the year. While my were younger in age (about 15 years), we found our shipmates to be engaging and enjoying life on a daily basis. Read Less

Overall this cruise held up to high Viking standards. Staff and crew were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. More regional food in the dining room would have been better for us. Food was tasty and prepared well. Bartenders and waiters were excellent and funny. Very entertaining. Ports and day excursions were well planned out and very informative. The longboat itself was very sleek and modern, but made one feel at home at all times. Embarkation in Budapest went smoothly and on the last day in Amsterdam we were allowed to remain on board until our late transfer took place. We opted to remain in Amsterdam, because in reality, one does not see or visit Amsterdam on this tour. Two more tour days aboard ship in the city would be great. I would definitely encourage any travelers to sail with Viking. They are always consistent and well organized. Airline packages are also a nice incentive to travel Viking. Many gateway cities are greatly reduced or free. We will again sail Viking in the future and highly recommend them. Read Less

I figured I may only get this one chance to see Europe so I chose the Grand European river cruise! I totally enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere on board ship. The scenery along the rivers was most beautiful. The excursions kept us moving every day--enjoying the many cities and towns along the way! The meals on board were extraordinary! Often including local fare. The staff was magnificent. They were warm and friendly and ever so helpful. THe first few days were a little overwhelming. THe excursions were wonderful, but I felt like I had no chance to really relax and enjoy the city or town we were in--you know, like sit in a cafe and enjoy a cafe latte and people watch. After a few days things settled down and got better. I loved the guides, they were knowledgable and informative. Totally love not having to pack up and move luggage every few days. Though we had been on a previous cruise from Prague to Nuremberg and South to Budapest, we chose to see Budapest again, (didn't have a chance the last time) and to go North up through Vienna again, other quaint German towns and to depart from Amsterdam. Weather and overall trip was exceptional!! Only 2 out of 15 days with some rain and overcast plus when we left for home from Amsterdam. Unable to explore Amsterdam since we went from our ship directly to the airport. Should have extended a couple of days and definitely should have booked the extension for Budapest. Thought we would get at least a windshield tour of Amsterdam but it was raining and the flight was relatively early so things worked out well. Maybe another time. Food, wine and treatment on board was as always exceptional!! Steward for our stateroom was very helpful and efficient as were all of the waiters and waitresses and the Program Director and her Assistant! We recommend Viking to anyone who wants to listen, in all seriousness, when we talk about travel. First time we stayed in Stateroom E. Prefer the French Balcony. Met a very nice couple from Richmond, VA and we do want to catch up with them again. Did travel the last two times with friends we encouraged to join us so we went as 2 couples each time. Also referred a couple and they took the new Ocean Liner. Word of mouth does work. Pick up at the Budapest Airport was a little awkward since we had to wait for another flight to come in with other Viking passengers on board. After waiting an hour or more they didn't show so we ended up going to the Baldur with out them. Regardless, the trip was great and yes, we would go again. We enjoyed Southern France already. Maybe Portugal and Spain next time or the Ocean Liner. Thank you Viking and a special thank you to your Baldur team. Read Less

We wanted to visit Belgium and cities in Germany , Austria and Hungary. We did not want to be packing and unpacking continously. We had a very good experience with this company in Russia Viking personnel is corteous, attentive and eager to 'please , This applies to cruise directors, concierges and room attendants and waiters and waitresses. The scenery was fantastic, the cities that were visited fantastic and the included tours made the best to show the highlughts of each destination . As usual cultural and historic feedback for the different places was provided as well as an opportunities to connect with local artisans. To improve, will be the night entertainment, although everyone was ready for bed at 11PM. Food was excellent and special requests were fulfilled with a smile. Wine is included with lunch or dinner. The Malbec that was chosen by the company should be changed. Reallu awful. The whites were good. Of course they let you bring wine that you buy in the visited cities so you may bring in good wine and local wines. Still since their policy is to provide the wine , they have to come up with betfer quality at least similar to what they served us while in the russian rivers. Read Less

Chose this cruise because it went through parts of central western Europe we had not visited. Viking has one of the highest ratings and concentrates on giving the passengers wonderful information on each port before arriving. The ship was beautiful and kept exceptionally clean and immaculate. We particularly enjoyed our departure city of Budapest and all the tours offered by Viking, as well as the beautiful 5 star Hilton hotel. After each port we felt we had a real understanding of the people and history of the area. Dining was perfect with good dishes representing each area. Or if one did not like a dish he/she could always fall back on salmon- how wonderful is that?! Most of the passengers were very friendly and interested in seeing the various ports of call, and one night we ask!ed one another how did you hear about Viking? Of course it was from the History Channel on TV! (For most first time passengers) The cabins are beautifully appointed and all anyone could ask for- - - one exception which I am sure has been corrected by now was the bed pillows- they were almost flat and seemed to be needing replacement! We are pleased to be taking one of the Norway cruises on your newer cruise ships this coming summer! Read Less

Every evening there was something different to watch, from local talent to other types of entertainment. One night there was a glass blowing demonstration. Since the water level was high we had to change ships but Viking made the whole transition go smoothly. We extended our stay in Amsterdam at the end of the cruise. We booked the hotel in Amsterdam ourselves as we felt Viking charged too much for the extended stay. The price for the cruise was a bit high, otherwise we had no complaints. We were interested in the scheduled ports of call and the daily tours included in the package. We had other friends who had taken a Viking Cruise and they all raved about the value of their trip. If we had it to do over again, we would definitely go to the embarkation city several days in advance. Primarily for two reasons, recover from jet lag prior to boarding the ship and having more time to spend exploring such a fascinating city (Budapest). ALL of the ship's staff and crew members were extremely pleasant & helpful, chatting with the passengers and making you feel like you were a special friend & guest. My husband being diabetic was always offered a special low sugar dessert - quite a treat when he usually has to respond "no thanks" to dessert. Menu selections were superb and we always had the option of having a lighter evening meal. Our room was comfortable, comparable to a luxury hotel! We especially enjoyed having a veranda where we could leisurely watch the beautiful scenery glide by. Other amenities such as thermostatically controlled temperatures for each individual stateroom, a private refrigerator and safe, plus sufficient electrical outlets and on board wifi all contributed to our comfort. We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and my husband's birthday on this cruise. We extended our trip with the pre cruise in Budapest which was a wonderful experience. We also extended with the post cruise in Amsterdam and Belgium. The whole trip was very enjoyable. Viking had every detail covered including a ship swap because of very high waters on the rivers. The swap was effortless on the part of the passengers but I know how hard the crew on both ships worked to make it that way. The best part was the Cruise Director, Marek Snelley changed ships with us !! Marek was a huge reason that our cruise was so delightful. He is personable, funny and extremely capable of taking care of the unexpected. This was our second Viking River cruise and I am sure we will be booking another cruise soon. These cruises are geared towards the older crowd. Our ship's median age was about 60. With no young people onboard our 24 year old daughter would not have enjoyed this as much as we did. A River cruise is much calmer and more intimate than ocean cruises. The emphasis is on learning about the cities visited. The tour leaders are all very knowledgeable and personable. Read Less

We started in Budapest on the Baldur, but did not do an early arrival. We had 2 days to explore that wonderful city. The embarkation was smooth an easy, with staff meeting us at the airport and moving our luggage to our rooms. The ship was comfortable and the room small but adequate. The veranda rooms were quite a bit larger and would have been nice, but were sold out by the time we booked our cruise. The food was excellent and the portions were just right so that weight gain was not a problem. We had dessert for every meal but in a nice small portion. The wait staff was friendly and accommodating. They quickly knew us and what we liked. Most of the entertainment was off the ship but the program director, Marek, was fantastic and the evening programs that he did were most informative Several nights we had outside musical groups that were excellent. The tours each day were well planned and gave a great overview of the cities. Each day there was an included tour to provide overview and then there were some extras that were excellent. We enjoyed the Vienna concert, the Cologne Pub crawl, and the Moselle Wine tour. This boat was mostly older adults and thus quite quiet. The river was smooth so there was no rocking of the boat. We would definitely do this kind of tour again!! Read Less

My husband chose this cruise as a gift to me. I was pleasantly surprised with the accommodations on the boat. He had booked a stateroom with a separate sitting room. I was able to sleep in, while he could get up and not disturb me by closing the door between rooms. The included tours were very good. The guides were informative and pleasant. We did purchase two additional tours during the cruise. My husband went on the Nuremberg War Trials Tour, which he said was well worth the money. We both went on the Dutch Cheese Making Tour. That tour was great especially when we were able to taste any cheese they had in stock. The prices we paid for cheese we bought was quite a bit cheaper than the "tourist" stores in downtown Amsterdam. Entertainment was very good from the lounge piano player to the entertainers that came in and visited for the night. I especially enjoyed the glass blower that came to the boat. The crew was exemplary (on both ships). Our cruise was supposed to be 2 weeks on the same boat. Due to high water in the rivers, the ships did not have enough clearance to go under certain bridges. So halfway through the cruise, we had to change ships and ended up on the Viking Magni. We changed boats with the same cruise we were on, but we coming from Amsterdam to Budapest. Viking handled the change seamlessly, and made the change as pleasant as possible. We were able to ut our luggage outside our room, and the next time we saw it was when it was in our new room..Since we were changing boats, Viking had our program director Marek and concierge Vanessa make the change with us. This really helped the passengers since we already had a good relationship with the two of them. The new crew was excellent, and were welcoming and friendly making the change over much easier. I was not really interested in eating in the dining room, so I was pleased the boat had the Aquavit Buffet. It gave you a quite pleasant place to enjoy a meal. You could not order what was being served in the restaurant, but you could eat what special they were serving that night or have an option from a small menu served in the buffet. It wasn't until later in the cruise when more people began to come to the buffet for dinner. I would guess at the most we had 15 people eating in the buffet with us. The staff assigned to serve us in the buffet were exemplary in their service. They were very friendly accommodating and provided us with great service! I also enjoyed the self service coffee bar and pastry that was provided. It was really nice to be able to get a cup of hot chocolate on your own. The staff kept the area clean and tidy, and well stocked. My husband and I are talking about taking a Western Mediterranean ocean cruise with Viking, then another river cruise, possibly the Tulip Cruise. Read Less

Dowtown Abbey advertisements attracted us to investigate Viking Cruises. This trip was a celebration for my wife and I for her retirement from the local bank she worked at for 45 years. The staff met and beat all our expectations. In addition to being helpful and friendly they would anticipate things that we would need. Great job. And the scrabbled eggs each morning were over the top great. This anticipation also applied to the company. With the high waters on the Danube the Baldour was unable to complete the trip to Amsterdam. Because Viking had the equipment and people we did a ship swap around Nurmburg which was seamless. We arrived at all our destinations on time and without incident. We had never been on any kind of cruise before. We always knew that we wouldn't want to cruise with 3000+ of our friends. The river cruise was, for us the way to go. The ratio of crew to guest was low enough that we always felt that we were the most important people on board. I am sure all of our cruising companions felt the same. Read Less

Service aboard the vessel was so personal and professional it felt as if we had our own wait staff. Excursions from the boat into the towns and villages were extremely well done. The local tour guides were knowledgeable and able to answer every question asked. Some highlights included the early evening concert in Vienna. The orchestra played Mozart and Strauss music, non-stop, for two hours. The four singers would have been comfortable in any opera house in the world. The there was the opportunity to taste the many local beers in almost every town accompanied with locally made sausages. Our visit to the courthouse in Nuremburg was eye opening even though we already knew about its importance after WWII. Our lecture filed in so much that we didn't even think about - - WOW! I can't forget to mention the late afternoon and evening lectures about the coming day that made us really look forward to what was coming. All that with wonderful food and drink. Relaxing meals and excellent wine (take the drink package - - it's a value). And we met some wonderful people, some of which we are already meeting again now that we are back home. I could go on, but you get the idea. We were spoiled and will have difficulty going on the big ships again. Read Less

I selected the Viking Grand European River Cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam. I was attracted to this cruise because everything was included in the price and the route takes you through most of the big name cities and attractions of Europe. After experiencing the cruise I could not be more pleased. The service that the crew and staff of the Viking Baldur provided was outstanding. The level of service we received on the cruise is totally unheard of in the US. The crew and staff went out of their way to make the voyage the most enjoyable trip of our lives (thus far!). For example, we arranged our own air travel since we wanted to spend time in Warsaw before flying on to Budapest to start the cruise. When we arrived in Budapest, I asked the Viking reception team at the airport if we could pay for a ride the transfer bus to the boat since we had not arranged for the transfer in advance because of our uncertain arrival time. The assistant for Viking said that we could take the Viking transfer bus, but that it would be less expensive for us to just take at taxi at that point. I do not speak Hungarian, and the Viking representative took us to a taxi and provided detailed instructions to the driver on where the boat was parked, which she would not have had to do since we did not use the airport transfer service. This is just one of many examples we experienced over the next 15 days on the cruise of the way the Viking representatives go out of their way to make your voyage the most enjoyable experience possible. Regarding the cruise categorization; I would call it a Luxury Cruise. It was not specifically a seniors cruise, although there were no children on the boat (much to my relief). Most people were north American, although there may have been a few Aussies there also, and virtually everyone spoke English, as did all the crew and staff. The food and wine were gourmet quality and there were choices of several different items at each meal. If you didn't like to eat in the more formal "sit down" fashion at the main dinning room, you could eat more casually on the terrace. There were no formal seating assignments in either dinning area and you could sit wherever you wanted and with whomever you wished. Dress on board was casual; no fancy clothes required. Read Less
