We chose the Scenic line thru a recommondation from our travel agent and also friends. There were low river issues before we left, but there was no talk of postponing or cancelling. We started off our holiday with a 10 day bus tour of Poland. We chose to pick up the river cruise in Budapest to have a relaxing 2 weeks after busing for 10 days. We were on the Pearl for 4-5 days, switched to the Opal for a few days, then bused to a location, missing a major portion of the cruise we where looking forward to. Then switched ships to the Amber. It was not relaxing after the first 4 days, Constantly packing up, unpacking and meeting new crews. The Positives: Each ship was a little nicer each time The Crew was wonderful and accommodating The Amber crew was really taxed with cleaning up after the guests switching to the Opal and preparing to accommodate the Opal guests. We all needed a holiday after that. Read Less

Water levels were low so we ‘swapped’ ships twice. Started on Scenic Pearl, then Scenic Opal then Scenic Amber. Opal and Amber were newer ships so larger rooms. Service was excellent. Food great. Tours organized very well and cruise director Andreea was amazing. The swaps were handled very well and pretty painlessly for us, with the exception we had to pack up twice but all luggage was handl d by the crew and in our rooms when we reached the new ship. Weather for October was well above normal so we were able to st on the top deck as we crises te rivers. Rm 234 at te back of the ship was very noisy on the Pearl but not so on the newer Opal ad Amber. Etertanmet rought on board was ver good. String quartet delightful. Would have enjiyed ports more had we been able to dock closer to town centres but low water levels found us needing to shuttle into centre of towns. Would definitely travel wt Scenic again. Read Less

We choose this cruise because we had done the Rhine and this looked like a decent alternative for our next cruise. The day trips on this cruise required more bus time then the Rhine cruise which made for long long days. The low water level caused us to have to change ships too days prior to the end of the cruise this made for hectic travel time of packing and unpacking. The kitchen and bar staff were great however the butler service was a lacking compared to the service we received two years prior on the Scenic Crystal. For example all the products in the min fridge were not to our liking so www asked the butler to change the items in the mini fridge i.e. more beer less wine and on this trip he stated that the mini fridge has a fixed set up and can not be changed however on the Crystal the butler was only too happy to make the changes. This is why we rated to trip in some ares mediocre. However the money we paid of the trip was top dollar. Read Less

We picked Scenic for a few reasons. Good ratings for the cruise line. We liked the itinerary. Would have been better ratings from us if we had been able to stay on the ship we had booked. This alternate ship (the Pearl)had a wonderful crew. The crew on the 2nd ship seemed to find us an inconvenience. This is understandable since it was inconvenient for us as well. We were required to change ships for one night due to the low water levels in the Danube. I can't imagine all the extra work that means for the crew. The cruise director (Richard) was great. The worst thing about moving the ship was leaving the hearing devices on board. So we were without those fantastic devices for a full day. The guide we had that day (Regensburg?) was great, but very soft spoken. I would have had a more interesting time if I could have heard her. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and Scenic was recommended to us by several friends and our travel agent. We took this cruise with 2 other couples as we all celebrated our 50th anniversary. We were certainly not disappointed!! Everything about Scenic is first class, especially the dining, service, cruise director's attention to detail, punctuality and Richard was just plain FUN! We had to change ships in Germany because of low water and the transition to the Jasper was seamless. All the excursions were thorough, but never rushed. Always on time, local guides were excellent. The Pearl was extremely well outfitted; we were very pleasantly surprised with the bathroom size, closet space and the cleanliness was second to none. We cannot say enough about the Pearl staff; they were attentive without being overly intrusive; and above all so much fun!! We loved the whole River Cruise experience as we did not have to pack each day; just enjoy the excursions and then return to a wonderful balcony suite and prepare for dinner. We would highly recommend Scenic for river cruise travel. Also, all the info we received from Scenic prior to our departure was first class and very informative. We also called Scenic directly a few times before departure and our questions were also answered immediately and courteously. Read Less

This was a gift for 20th service at my work! The different excursions were fantastic and well organized. The bike ride was magic and with the electric assistance, it was a great discovery. The cabin is really nice and gives a beautiful view we could enjoy with an opening window on the Danube! The cabin is always clean because of the efficency of the cleaning staff. The Chef is incredibly good, always surprising us with different tastes and presentations. The cruise was from Budapest to Nuremberg but because of the low water level, we were not able to go till Nuremberg with the ship. The weather is something we cannot control but we were lucky enough to have the sailing almost till the end. The only thing I would do a remark on is the time between some excursions is tight with the next one. Not much time to exercice and I was sad because no pool on the ship. But for me, it was an incredible experience and I would definitively say, Go for it!! Thanks to all the Fantastic Crew :) Read Less

Chose Scenic based on online reviews etc. Considered it to be one of the top river cruise companies. We were very disappointed at service levels and food. Breakfast and lunch were major disappointments with minimal options and “cafeteria-feel” in the restaurant area. Our first lunch on the ship offered salads and the only hot food option : “liver balls”! For the money paid to take the trip, definitely disappointing. The water levels on the Danube were low and so bus travel dominated the first few days of our trip. Overall, Scenic tours include excursions with bus rides that are too long, example : trip to Salzburg. Also quality of docking areas are very poor : ours were generally in industrial areas or areas not near downtown or old core areas of the cities we were visiting. Tour guides were ok but duration of tours were either too short or too long. We felt that some tours included visiting a few spots that were just tossed in to make up some time. Also, most guides didn’t use their microphones properly so we were unable to hear them very well. Visit to Budapest was disappointing. Sailed into the city in the morning and really only had an afternoon to visit “Budapest in depth”, as Scenic called it. They brought us to a piano recital (which was good), but upon leaving our bus broke down and we were forced to wait in a hot bus for over 1/2 hour. Needless to say, the remaining tour consisted of a quick visit to one other site and then back to the ship. Communication among company, employees and customers was very poor. Even though the company knew water levels were low, they provided few details as to how this would impact our trip. They basically only told us that our ship was changing from the Amber to the Pearl (an older ship). This included a room downgrade in our case and it was only when I pointed this out to the tour director did they consider offering some form of compensation. We didn’t understand why they would set up an early breakfast in one location of the ship, then change it to the formal dining area and then back to the early breakfast location for late risers. Doesn’t make sense and annoys travelers. Overall, tour was not worth the money and we were totally disappointed with the company, service and tour quality. Read Less

We chose Scenic because of it’s good reviews and that it was all inclusive. Communication from ScenicUSA left much to be desired. We cruised with mostly Canadians and Brits. They were all offered an extension in Prague after disembarking the ship. We were never offered this option. Thus, we had arranged 3 days in Munich on our own at the end of the cruise. In the end, this was fine as we loved Minuch. The Danube was at at all time low and our original boat, the Amber, never made it to Budapest. The Pearl was fine and the staff did an awesome job of dealing with low water levels and making the best of plans that had to change. We didn’t get to spend any downtime in Reggensburg and never made it to Nuremburg. Breakfast and lunch was boring and not that good. One guy making omlettes for 160 passengers just doesn’t cut it. Dinner was mediocre and a couple of times my entrees were not good. Dining is definitely the weak link on the Pearl. All-in-all, we had a great time and met some super people. The reviews that say you don’t need to dress for dinner are wrong. Women should bring 1 dress, some dressy shoes, gitzy jewelry, etc. I was always under-dressed. Read Less

We figured we were old enough now to do one of these river cruises - being in our early 60's. We splurged & chose one of the Royal Suites. Best decision ever! The cabins are relatively compact on these river cruises, so the added bonus of a little sitting room & a bathroom with a bath was very much appreciated. Not that you spend a huge amount of time in your cabin but when we did we really enjoyed the space. Included in this level of cabin is free laundry which was great. (one downside was that a couple of pieces of clothing shrunk (maybe very hot water).....and no it wasn't the copius food & alcohol consumed :-) the pants I put in actually shrunk in the leg length by about 4-5 cms unfortunately. And they had a smoky smell when returned - which I worked out was probably the chemicals used in the wash??). Also included was $200 on board credit which no one reminded me about until we were 1/2 way into the cruise. I ended up having 3 massages - if I had been paying directly out of my pocket it would have stopped at one. The room was really stark & she played this god awful music that was not in the least bit restful (at one stage it went into rap!) And she was a personality free zone. I put it down to language difficulties, but not so sure tbh. She came across as very stern. Like all cabins we had butler service & I have to say our butler - Chris went above & beyond the whole time, as did our room attendant but his name escapes me. Both were from Indonesia. They were absolutely delightful & made the cruise that much more enjoyable. Could not fault any of the staff who were assigned to look after us. Exemplary! There was only one female butler who could be a bit grumpy but by the end we even managed to get a smile from her. The bar staff were so much fun, the executives who oversaw the running of the ship were professional & courteous & it was really obvious they wanted everyone to have the best time. We had dinner with the captain on the 2nd night of the cruise, which we really enjoyed. He was a lovely fellow & very interesting. We had 167 passengers on board & for the most part they were friendly & wanted to chat. We met up & became fast friends with a bunch of Canadians. Had such a good time with them. There were a few we steered clear of, but all in all it was great. The staff work every hour god made & yet they stayed cheerful & were always willing to engage. I would do another Scenic cruise in a heartbeat as I think they do 5 star really well.(except for the pathetic fitness centre) Read Less

We were disappointed in this cruise line. We did a river cruise in Europe with Scenic almost a year ago. We were in a 200 cabin (205, 207, 209?). The balcony was pretty useless; would have made more sense if they took out the doors and made it part of the room. If you happen to be on the balcony you could hear conversations from several rooms away. The excursions were mostly great. Their headsets were horrible and desperately needed to be upgraded. The worst part was the food. Trying to serve an entire, albeit small, ship at the same time in the evening is a bad idea. We sometimes had to wait 45 minutes to order, so we were served late. And the food portions were, as some of the Canadians said, quarter sized. No seconds, except dessert. We expected local food, but only got German sausage once. The staff was friendly and some overly so. I expect that was to receive extra tips (included in cruise price). They did work extremely hard. I heard some say the work they were doing was not what they signed up for; bait and switch? Read Less

We loved Scenic because their balconies offered an automatic glass window that you could raise to lower to expand the bedroom space and allow us to enjoy the river scenery. They also offered multiple choices of excursions each day and all were included. The tailor made devices were cumbersome to use on the tours but here helpful to point our sites while on the river. The staff were superb and the food choices were fabulous. The cruise director was exceptional at accommodating any request by guests and ensure we all had a fabulous experience. We loved starting in Budapest and cruising to Amsterdam so the 68 lift locks came first then we had an easier cruise into Holland. We had great weather --22-28 degrees. The water was low but we only were stuck in the mud at one point when we moved to the side of the Rhine to let another river cruise ship go by. There were days when we had to close the sun deck as the the clearance to the bridges was so tight. The concert in Palace Lichenstein in Vienna and the Sounds of Music in Salzberg were highlights as was the Sundown evening in Aggstein Castle. Dining was open and earliest you could have dinner was 7:00pm. But after the excursions and the pre-dinner entetrainment eg. violinist, string quartet etc. made it seem not so late to eat. The gym was small and had only 2 bicycles but we made do. I would love to do another Scenic cruise SOME DAY! Read Less

Our travel agent recommended this cruise. Scenic does not promote their cruises well in North America. Most of the passengers were Australians who were very friendly and fun. We had a a junior suite. Nice sized room and very coveniently located to the ships amenities. We are non-smokers and our cabin was located just above the smoking section above the main doors. We could not use our balcony most of the time. They need to relocate the smoking section elsewhere on the ship. The wine offered with meals was either white or red. Wines offered were mediocre however there were some other better choices on the menu. The crew and servers were outstanding. The excursions were well organized and on time time. The excursions were outstanding and fun. First class all the way. The food in the Portabello's restaurant was excellent. The food was typical cruise cuisine. Good variety. We thought that the meat proteins were marginal at the lunch buffet. Our room was clean and very comfortable. One passenger passed the flu bug on to most of the passengers. The cruise industry needs to do a better job quarantining sick passengers. It was a great cruise even though most of the passengers were sick near the end of the cruise. The cruise director was outstanding. This was one of the best cruises ever for us. The Rhine Gorge was spectacular. We would highly recommend this cruise. Read Less

The cabin was up to the usual high standard as was food on offer in both eating places. The entertainment was of a high standard as were the onshore excursions.Particularly the concert in Vienna and the onboard entertainment ie string quartet, violinist, and zither player. Staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. The choice of excursions was excellent Although we had visited Budapest and Vienna before we still found new and interesting places to visit. e.g. the hospital in the caves in Budapest. Amsterdam however had nothing new to offer. As we travelled through Austria and Bavaria besides historic towns we enjoyed the charming villages on our excursions. We sampled every kind of sausage and beer in Austria and visited every Christmas shop. We may need to have two Christmas trees this year. Perhaps the highlight was the champagne reception and orchestral evening in Vienna - wonderful music singing and ballet in splendid surroundings. We would travel with Scenic in the future and will certainly recommend the company to family and friends. Read Less

We chose Scenic for this holiday on the recommendation of friends and comments on the reviews. We were not disappointed. The Scenic package we picked up from our travel agent was so well organized it was a sign of what was to come - the flights, transfers, hotel accommodation and cruise all flowed smoothly. The organization and service by staff - cabin, butler, bar, dining and ship was always friendly and attentive. The food was excellent- the quality and variety at each meal made choices difficult. It was nice to have all beverages and alcohol included, a glass of wine while cruising the river in the afternoon, a drink before dinner etc. The organization of cabins in the small space was most efficient. Tours were interesting and informative - the Taylormade system made it easy to listen to the information being presented by the guide or know what you were seeing as you sailed the rivers. The local guides were excellent, very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the sites they were sharing with us. The local wines, menu items, and entertainment reflective of the area added to the regional flavour. The enrichment activities- Vienna concert, Sounds of Music concert, Oktoberfest, castle dinner, were all very special and memorable events. All combined to make this a most enjoyable holiday. As everything was included in the trip price before leaving home, the only other money spent was on local specialty coffees on our free time or souvenirs to bring home. I definitely recommend Scenic for the all inclusive value and experience and look forward to another cruise with them. Read Less

A river boat cruise had been high on our list of vacations for many years. We finally decided to do it while we are still in good health and able to negotiate the villages and castles. We decided on Scenic after attending an information session. We appreciated the fact that everything was included, we did not have to think about who and how much to tip or if we could have another glass of wine. Everything went very smoothly, even the weather cooperated. Our cabin was small but adequate with lots of storage. The service throughout the ship was excellent, we enjoyed the food at every meal, there was lots of variety. The excursions were amazing, especially the private concert at the palace in Vienna. The cruise director (Sonja) was excellent, everyone enjoyed her "characters" and her joke of the day after the daily port talk. First of all you need to understand that with Scenic there are no additional costs and NO Tipping! You pay up front for everything so there are no surprise bar bills or extra excursion costs. Our trip was outstanding! There was nothing to complain about on this wonderful trip. This was their first trip of the season (early April) so the weather was somewhat cool and rainy but it never prevented us from having an amazing time. Scenic is an Australian company and many of the other passengers were Australian. They are always a happy outgoing bunch who are a pleasure to travel with. We were treated like royalty from the moment we were so efficiently checked in until they carried our even heavier luggage (there's lots of opportunity for shopping) off the ship. . The tours: We are seniors and found the pace just perfect. Buses were lined up and ready to drive us to whatever excursion we chose if the distance was longer than we cared to walk. Some were off ship meals, like in a resort on the mountain overlooking Salzburg or in Wurtzburg where we celebrated an early Octoberfest with jolly Bavarian musicians, beer and sausage. Another outing was a fabulous symphony concert evening in Vienna's Liechtenstein palace. Each of us were given a gps to use on excursions. It also functioned as a personal head phone to enable us to hear the tour guides who accompanied us on our tours. A brilliant invention for those of us with hearing issues. The lounge: The second level had the bar and really comfy chairs and couches. Here we watched guest musicians and dancers while we sipped our drinks or read our books as we watched the scenery go by or listened to Voytek, the ship musician belt out our favourite songs. The bar offered any and every alcoholic (or non alcoholic) drink that you could imagine from the best scotch to Bailey's. There was also a section in the lounge offering light meals if you didn't feel like going down for the buffet at breakfast or lunch. One of the best times was the night we all, staff included, danced to the oldies. It was obvious that the staff had been hand-picked for their positions and because the passengers number less than 200 you got to know them well. The Dining room and the meals: Excellent food and the best of wines each day. So often at all inclusive buffets after a few days, the food starts to look and taste the same. This was not the case here. Dinner was always a la carte. Chef Budi was very knowledgable and creative. He gave us a tour of his kitchen and a special cooking lesson one day. All meals were made fresh and produce was purchased locally. The soups were "to die for". I came home with a few new recipes to try myself. The wait staff was exceptional. Our favourite was the youngest, Victor. He treated us like royalty. We ladies all wanted to take him home. Our bubbly cruise director Sonja had unlimited energy. She would flit around sometimes between the different day tours checking on us and shopping for prizes for her contests. She even set up an egg hunt for us on Easter morning. She always ended her port talk with some hilarious joke and has the perfect personality for the job. I'm ready to take another River cruise anytime. This is the best way to see Europe and it will be with Scenic all the way! Read Less

The reason we chose this cruise was everything was included. We stayed 2 nights in Budapest prior to departure. We were lucky to have booked in to the hotel right opposite the wharf where the ship was moored. As we were so close we walked to the ship, halfway along our walk the hotel manager Miguel & a staff member came to greet us & take our bags. That was the start of impeccable service. When we disembarked our tour director booked a taxi for us. The disembarkation was very smooth. The staff were amazing, always happy, willing to help they made us all feel like one big happy family. Our tour director, Richard Grey, kept us all entertained & well organised for all our excursions. The service, organisation, food tours were all perfect!!! There was a range of ages including a honeymoon couple but no children as the cruise isn't suitable for them. We loved it so much we didn't want to leave. The main tip is to make sure you have a pocket to put you door card in or when you are on shore your boarding card. Read Less

The feature that the cost of the All Inclusive Cruise was designated in Canadian Dollars, and that with early booking the airfare Toronto, Budapest,Amsterdam, Toronto was offered as an incentive, which we gladly accepted. The flight with KLM, each way, was an excellent experience, with their " Economy Comfort " available for a small extra charge, the roominess was well worth it to us. The Transfers all worked right on time and were driven my professional drivers, well versed in the local "questions". Very pleased. The Ship, Scenic Pearl, was in immaculate condition. Our suite, 212, was always kept right up to shape by an excellent "room attendant staff". The inclusive mini bar, while we didn't use the content to any great extent, was a great feature to have when we required a little extra something. Aside from the Captain, the Hotel Manager ( Miguel ) and the Cruise Director ( Richard ) were top flight persons. Impressive memory...they always new us by name....ready to respond to our enquiries...a real pleasure to travel with them. The Lounge Crew.....servers and the bar servers...now, they were very special.....I cannot say more..... The amazing coffee machine in the lounge was a real treat and so easy to use, even decaf !! The entertainment, both on shore and on board were top notch....very well presented and always just the right amount of time....not too long, but always entertaining. The on shore transfers ( by Scenic Bus and others ) always had plenty of space...no crowding...the on board guides were excellent.....Eva and Carlsten...were standouts. On and off the ship was transparent.....no fuss no problem... Can't say more....terrific job Scenic.....and well done !!!!! Read Less

Scenic was highly recommended by our travel agent. We found it less than remarkable. Misrepresentations included the role of the so called "butler" - we never saw or heard from him, and nightly local entertainment on board - there were two such events, including the "Crew Show". The on-board entertainment that was provided (piano player/singer) was stale and off-key. It is difficult to say which was worse, the food or the on-board dining room service. Both were bad. Our best meal was a dinner at a hotel in Budapest before we joined the cruise. We have better coffee at home. The ship was comfortable. However, the shower in our room was uncomfortably small. The view from our balcony was awesome when we were able to use it, which was not often as the ship was bolted to another ship virtually every afternoon, night and morning. Excursions were rushed and schedules inflexible. Scenic is not responsible for rising water on the river and the subsequent inability to reach intended ports.(We reached our day #6 port on Day #8 and disembarked from there). However, Scenic could have done a MUCH better job adjusting land trips so that guests were not on a coach for 7 hours for a 1 hour city tour. Find a closer venue. Leave earlier so that there is more time at the venue. I would not sail on Scenic again, certainly not before trying some of the others out there. We could have done better on our own, spending a handful of days in Budapest, Vienna and Prague. Our next trip will be un-escorted. Read Less

First of all I should mention that we had awful weather - cold and wet - and this obviously affected my enjoyment of the cruise. We were new to river cruising and I am glad that we chose a shorter cruise as our intro. There were no onboard activities apart from a quiz one evening. Scenic cater for the more mature traveller and we found that the tours were not active enough. For example the best day weather wise was Salzburg but there were two stops on the way there so having done the walking city tour - one hour - and had lunch, there was only 45 minutes of free time. Regarding the ship itself, the restaurant and bar area were very cold - I was in layers the whole time. If you feel the cold take plenty of sweaters and shawls to put over evening wear. People didn't seem to dress up as much as they do on ocean cruises. There are also 68 locks to navigate if you take the whole trip to Amsterdam so nights are noisy - take earplugs. We dined in Portobello which is just a glassed off area at the front of the bar and also Table la Rive which is just a table for twelve at the far end of the restaurant - both meals were good. The standard of food overall was good with plenty of choice although the buffet dinner on the first night was a bit of a scrum. There were some interesting towns along the way - its worth walking around Regensburg because if you choose the Weltenburg abbey trip you won't see the town at all. I would have liked to explore Passau but as soon as we came back from the tour of Salzburg we sailed off - there did seem to be a rush to get to the next lock - presumably to avoid queueing. The sun deck was closed off most of the trip because the river was high and bridges low. Read Less
