I first want to mention some statistics about our cruise: There were about 160 people on the ship: 10 people from Canada, 10 people from the US, about 30 people from New Zealand, and the rest were from Australia. The cruise director is from Austria, one waitress is from Poland, and most of the staff is from Serbia. So you'll definitely meet interesting people from around the world! There were *no* kids at all on the cruise- the youngest people were a group of ladies in their late 20's. I'm pretty sure this is by design and is just the way Scenic markets the cruises. We went on the Christmas Market cruise from November to December and usually water levels aren't an issue, but this time, the water was too low north of Passau, which disrupted our schedule. We were stuck in a port for 2 days and when we were finally able to go, we had to wait behind a slow cargo ship and then wait behind ships coming downstream. This meant we didn't get into Regensberg until almost 9:00 at night. Then it would be a 1/2 hour drive into the city, then the Christmas market closes at 10:00. The ship continued on to the next port, which meant people who went into town had to stay out until the ship docked at 12:30 am. Only 8 people did this, so we probably could have skipped this stop and kept going to make up the time. We didn't go, so we missed out on seeing the town. This also meant we didn't get into Nuremberg until late in the day. We also got stuck in traffic while driving into the city, which meant the bus didn't drop us off until 4:30... and it was already dark. This meant we didn't get any good pictures. A similar thing happened in Rudesheim: we left the ship at 3:10 pm, then a 1 hour drive on the bus, then a short train ride into town... which meant it was too dark to see much of anything! This meant we didn't get ANY daytime photos! But according to the cruise director, he'd rather stop in a port and give people a chance to see things, rather than continue on. But this amounts to little more than a tease! To be fair, Scenic offered us alternative options and we could have chosen to continue by bus, but we stayed with the ship. Would I take another European river cruise? I don't know, especially since the low water levels are supposed to happen in the summer, not winter. Would I take another cruise on Scenic? Yes. Dining: Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style, though you can also order from a menu. The omelette station was very good and by the end of the cruise, the chef was practically asking me if I wanted my usual. The breakfast buffet is the standard breakfast fare: scrambled eggs, bacon, cereals, bagels and bread, and juices. Most of the time, a majority of the passengers eat at the same time because of the timing of the excursions. There were a few days when there was a line for the omelettes, but you can get scrambled eggs or something else instead. The dinners in the main dining area approximate a 5-star dining experience: - You're served three courses: appetizer, main, and dessert. - The waiters/ waitresses put the napkin on your lap and take away silverware as it's not needed. - The pacing of the dinner usually takes around 1 1/2 hours, because everyone is in the dining area at the same time and because it's just paced slower. However, the menu options seem a little limited to me: Every night, there's an option for meat (beef, veal, pork, lamb) and an option for fish. I don't eat most fish and some fish give me an allergic reaction. I'm not a big meat eater so I really don't care for beef every night. I'm not sure why they don't have a main course choice of chicken or pasta. They serve pasta for lunch, so they have it on the ship. Plus, pasta with vegetables would be a good vegetarian option. We when ate at Portobello's, the Italian restaurant, the choices were beef tenderloin and fish. Yes, more beef. I was expecting some pasta choices, since it's supposed to be an Italian restaurant, but again, there was no pasta! Also, as a hint: I had read that people needed to make a reservation at Portobello's when they boarded the ship. When we boarded, we were told that the reservation was already made for us and we'd receive an invitation the night before. But they didn't tell us *which* night... though a few days later, I asked and they told me. Tours: We took the guided tour in almost every city and they were mostly very good. Scenic hires local guides who talk about the history and joke around a little. But our time was very limited due to the schedule change because of the low water level. For many stops, we would take a bus for about 1 hour or 1 1/2 hours to the city, then take a 1 hour guided tour, then get 2-3 hours of free time, then a 1 hour drive back to the ship. I was expecting a cruise where the ship arrived in the morning, then we do an excursion in the morning, then go back to the ship for lunch, and then go out on our own after lunch. But our actual schedule turned out to be: cruise most of the day, get into a port after lunch, spend the afternoon in the town, then come back in time for dinner and continue cruising. Needless to say, this didn't leave enough time to visit the Christmas markets and explore the town. Entertainment: There was a Hungarian folk dance on our first night, which was very good. The ship brought in a violinist and zither player on different night and both were excellent. The highlight was a German speaking class hosted by a "Dr Prof Prof" and held at exactly 10:33. Spoiler: it was the cruise director dressed in a traditional German outfit with glasses and a mustache. He was hilarious and we even learned a little German! Staff: Alex, the cruise director, was excellent, especially when it came to rescheduling everything because of the disruption caused by the low water level. Dinner service seemed a little slow at first, but that changed when we mentioned we'd prefer a quicker dinner. By the end of the cruise, our waitress, Ruzica, had our usual drinks waiting for us at our table for breakfast and lunch, which was excellent service! More: The pool wasn't open when we took our cruise. Though I don't think I would have used it since the weather was too cold. We didn't use the spa, massage, or gym. Read Less

The most beautiful lifetime expirience! First time on a river cruiser and we had a lovely time on board and on excursions. Everything went perfect from beginning till the end, we have met wonderful people for all over the world. Very pleasent and friendly crew, always with a smile on their faces. Excursions were organised perfectly and everything went smooth. We enjoyed every single guided tour, specially e-bike tour Durnstein - Melk, highly recomended. Cruise director Richard was just amazing and helpful for every question that was asked, the man really knows his job! Mario the Hotel manager was amazing and really we felt like home. Our batler Ratko was so lovely and he has been there for everything that we requested. Restoran waitress Ruzica put a lot of magic in her service, so professional and just perfect! We are very thankful to all the crew, great service, wonderful and tasty food and most important to mention THANK YOU SCENIC - WE'LL BE BACK! Read Less

We chose Scenic based on a recommendation from someone who had reviewed all cruise lines. This was above and beyond any of our expectations. Crew was professional but fun to be around and there was great demographics for all passengers. The excursions that were available provided something for everyone and there was enough flexibility to allow for last minute changes. And there was opportunities for self-guided touring if you chose to have a day that was not so structured.. Meals were good and tailored to represent the country we sailed through. portions were adequate. Also nice to have choices of venues and times for meals. daily updates ensured that you knew what was going on everyday. On-line application allowed you to be in touch with points of interest both on the river and withing the towns visited along the route. Some of these features could have been better explained early in the cruise, however to ensure maximum enjoyment. Read Less

We choose this cruise for a birthday celebration, and it was fabulous. We did stay before the cruise and Scenic still provided transportation to the ship. The rivers were at a good level and we did not have to transfer ships as some have had to. All the excursions were well thought out, with at least 3 options to choose from. The cruise director had daily port talks explaining what would happen the next day and announce any additional entertainment. We had Hungarian dancers, Viennese dancers, violinists, zitar player, and the lounge singer/piano player. There were more but I cant recall all of them. The chef would give his menu recommendations and the food was very good. The restaurant manager/sommelier introduced the wine pairings. The service was first rate from the bus boys to the bartenders everyone was upbeat, and positive. The housekeepers were constantly cleaning nothing ever got dirty. Another plus was the free laundry, once during the cruise. Everything was just amazing. Sad to leave the ship, saying good bye to some incredible people. Scenic transferred our luggage to our hotel free of charge as we were staying a few extra days. Read Less

As two female friends travelling together for the first time we initially chose this cruise because it was all inclusive and therefore we didn't have the stress or worries about excursion choices, costs and tipping but the clincher was French Champagne available whenever the need arose!! We chose this particular cruise ship because of the plunge pool, which was excellent. How lovely to be able to refresh after a day's sightseeing. We arrived in Budapest one day before departure and stayed at the Marriott that Scenic use and we were very pleased with our room and the lovely views of the Chain Bridge and the lights along the Danube. Before boarding the Scenic Opal we walked to the Gallert Baths and enjoyed a relaxing swim before later returning to explore the Food Markets. We had no problems with touching base with the Scenic Rep in the Marriott and all went smoothly with organising our luggage to be transferred to the ship. The staff on the Scenic Opal were very welcoming and we were personally shown to our cabin on the Diamond deck - which had everything we could possibly need. We loved that we could put the window on the Sundeck down and enjoy the fresh air. It was a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast and Salvatore's special pancakes with Moet. Our cruise director Alex was amazing, creative, funny, organised and a great disco dancer (Australian Sense of Humour!!). We appreciated how he made our trip run so smoothly plus the extreme sacrifice he made to take us shopping for disco outfits in Cologne! The crew were exceptional - the bar team Robert, Stevan, Alex and Monika were entertaining and attentive. Our butler Putro was delightful and we so appreciated his great dance moves. The food and service was 10 star - every request was catered for. So if you are looking for a cruise that offers great sightseeing, beautiful cruising scenery and a fun on-board experience then the Scenic Opal - Jewels of Europe - Budapest to Amsterdam is for you. You can really judge a company by the way they handle a difficult situation. My experience, and others, on this trip was that Scenic handled this absolutely terribly and conducted the tour at the most cheapest cost possible to themselves. They didn’t deliver a luxury experience, even though they still had the opportunity and facilities to do so, instead they provided terrible service with really cheap food (often buffets) and really cheap wine. I thought after their 16 million dollar class action case they lost last year that they would have improved their service, but they have obviously learnt nothing from past mistakes. We were advised by email on 19th October (5 days before our cruise, and we were already in Europe) that we would have to do land arrangements for four nights before joining the Scenic Jewel (instead of Scenic Opal) in Regensburg on 28th October. We were not advised of an option to cancel the tour. We were then emailed on 22nd October advising which hotels we would be staying at. Still no option to cancel. On the 24th October in Budapest we met our Tour Director, and was given an update on the trip. At that stage we found out that there were 109 people booked for this cruise but only 65 showed up in Budapest and 44 people cancelled and didn’t travel. After speaking with people on the tour we found out that scenic contacted some people before they left Australia and gave them an option to cancel, and didn’t bother to contact other passengers at all (including us, except for an email advising a change to the itinerary, but not advising any option to cancel). We were informed that the river was the lowest in over 100 years by the tour director, so obviously scenic knew well in advance that this trip was going to be affected and yet we were not advised. Looking at reviews of previous scenic passengers that cruised this itinerary this year, there were many disruptions, so scenic should have advised us well before we left Australia and given us an option to cancel like they did for only select passengers. We totally understand that scenic can not help the water levels being so low that they can’t operate the cruise at certain sections of the river, however, they knew the river conditions well in advance of the cruise as they’d had problems all summer. They should have given everyone, not just a select few, the option the cancel before leaving Australia. I wonder if they went ahead with this cruise because they had a travel agent famil group booked on this cruise? I telephoned and emailed Scenic in Australia from Budapest, after our tour briefing, however they were not of any help at all and just gave a generic reply to claim for compensation when we return home. Rather than going into a long letter, I’ve itemised below the terrible experience that we had from Scenic considering that Scenic has advertised this “Luxury River Cruise” as an all inclusive (spirits, wines, soft drinks, tea, coffee and mini bar), with anytime dining. - we were advised in writing by the tour director that we were allowed up to two glasses of wine, beer or soft drink with dinner and one glass with lunch during the first four days of our trip which was conducted by land (hotels and buses) - Even though scenic had the access to provide spirits, wine, coffee, tea, afternoon tea...etc at the hotels we were staying at, scenic would not include this for us and we were told we would have to pay for these ourselves. - The quality of the buffet food and wine we received at the hotels was of a very poor quality. The food was like something you’d get at an RSL club and the wines were really cheap and nasty. We stayed at very nice hotels, but received the cheapest quality of food and wine. - We finally boarded the scenic jewel in Regensburg, on 28th October. - We were onboard the ship for 10 nights. During this time, there was no anytime dining in the crystal dining room (as advertised by scenic) instead we were restricted to sometimes late dining times and the waiters were always in a hurry to get us fed and out of the restaurant. - Portobellos was only open 2 nights out of the 10! Why?? - For 8 out of 10 nights on the cruise there was only one dining option, and that was a fixed time, which is totally opposite to what scenic advertise. - There was absolutely no drinks or food service on the top deck during the entire cruise, which is completely the opposite experience of friends who have done this cruise before. I know there was part of the cruise when the top deck was closed when going under bridges, but we received no service there at all the entire cruise. Even when we docked in Amsterdam, we saw Viking and Avalon ships beside us serving their passengers drinks and food on their top decks.....our ship was completely dead in atmosphere and service. - The food quality on the ship was very “hit and miss”. Sometimes the food was very nice, other days they food was just terrible and quite often cold. - The cakes in the river cafe were a generic shop bought cake that was often stale by being cut and left in the display cabinet. - We were never offered a packed picnic lunch, as advertised by scenic, if we didn’t want to do an organised tour and just do our own sightseeing. - The entertainment onboard the ship was really amateur and something you’d expect on a budget cruise, not a luxury cruise. I heard so many glowing reports of scenic, I had high expectations...they were exceeded. There were four of us (2 couples) travelling together We were on Scenic Opal on the Jewel deck, down at water level. It was fabulous, plenty of space, eye level window, great view of the scenery, but we spent most of our time in the lounge or the front deck or on the top deck, even if we had a balcony cabin we would have been up in the lounge etc so that you can see BOTH sides of the river. The food was wonderful, my friend has many dietary needs was so well looked after she was thrilled. Our cruise director Richard Grey was BRILLIANT the entertainment on board, the excursions, guides and staff were second to none. Budapest to Amsterdam was the BEST way to go. Loved it. Well done SCENIC I marked Embarkation down one point because: One thing could be improved is information on arrival. In the 'Welcome' book it stated we were to transfer to the ship from the front of our hotel at 11am and it also stated 'Embarkation at the ship starts no earlier than 3pm" This caused some confusion. Guessing we would be at the ship by 11:30, were we to stand around for 3 and a half hours before getting on? did we drop our luggage there and go sightseeing for a couple of hours? No it all went very smoothly the coach picked us up, took us along the river to the ship, we went on board to a lovely welcome with snacks and drinks available immediately, while we waited to be shown to our rooms, so maybe the written word of the 'Welcome' could be changed to show that you go to the lounge whilst waiting. Thanks again for a wonderful experience Read Less

We booked an end suite which turned out to be very noisy, with significant shaking. A lesson to never book an end room was learned. The cruise itself was excellent, the crew were super, the food varied at each sitting so boredom never set in. The wait staff were attentive and remembered what you liked or did not like. The food was very good. We started out with very little free time unlike an ocean cruise there were no "sea days" just a constant sting of sights to see, it almost seemed like an endurance test but eventually slowed down to an easier pace. All of the sites were worth seeing, the guided tours were well planned with knowable guides and always plenty of free time to explore on your own. The special Scenic events were indeed very special. My party and I had 2 days in Budapest before we boarded the ship and added 2 days in Amsterdam at the end of our cruise on the advice of friends who had taken the same cruise. Great suggestion! Embarking and disembarking were both well organized and quick! The Opal is an amazing ship, spotless and well planned out. Dining room, food and staff were exceptional. Chef Norm is a master with food. Our choices each night were hard to choose between. If you tire of the buffet you can choose off the menu anytime. It is not always a buffet if you choose not to. The service from everyone is above and beyond. Entertainment was wonderful, each night Antonio the piano/guitar/singer played songs from all eras. All had such a great time and a lot of dancing ensued most nights. The cruise director Richard Grey brought outside entertainment on ship some nights which had everyone on awe. I cannot say enough about the service from all employees on the Opal, if you needed something, they went above and beyond to get it for you. Nothing was too big or too small, and always with a smile. Ports and shore excursions, I enjoyed all as I am interested in history, however, if you are not up to it or not interested in a certain excursion you can stay on the ship and relax. Your choice! Now for my last yahoo! Our cruise director Richard Grey was the most extraordinary person. He made our cruising so seamless, all excursions on time and fun. If you needed info on anything he would get it for you. Always there with a smile and hello, he remembers many names of passengers, information on the cities we visit, the port talks, and even dressed up a couple of nights (oh, I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there) he was hilarious! One last item, the trip may cost a bit more than another cruise line, however, ALL tips, excursions, food and alcohol are included in your price upfront. No bill at the end of the trip unless you use the hairdresser or masseuse. We had private functions for Opal passengers only, which would be an added cost on another cruise line, but not for Scenic passengers! Amazing trip and amazing people. As you can see, I totally enjoyed my trip and would certainly go again on another trip and different route. I highly recommend Scenic Cruise lines! Debra N Read Less

I did a full assessment of all the river cruises and Scenic, although amongst the most expensive came out as good value for money as an all-inclusive cruise. Eveything was included. The ship was superb, however the journey there was not at all good. We were supposed to fly from Bristol to Budapest via Brussels. However, our flight was cancelled on the tarmac, we were transferred to Heathrow via taxi, then had more delayed flights after that, arriving in Budapest at 2230 rather than 1120 originally. The meals are superb and the butler service for morning tea was great. Meals to mention are the Tasting menu, which complemented seve courses to five wines, and the exclusive la Rive meal. The highlight was the exclusive concert at Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna. The music was out of this world and the setting magnificent. Other excursions were to Salzburg, and Melk Abbey. The guides were excellent and the hand held guides worked well. Although we were early in the season all the staff were extremely well trained to a high standard. The fellow passengers were a mixed crowd from UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, and we had a great time. We even had a Grand National sweepstake and my horse came third! The shore excursions were all excellent with the personal guide being very good. Would I go again? Definitely Read Less

The all inclusive 5-star experience on board Scenic Opal was incredible. The food was amazing - in choice, presentation and quality - the chef (Norman) clearly loved his work. The service in the cabins, in the restaurant and throughout the ship was attentive, but not overwhelming and the attention to detail in the delivery of information, the organisation of the included tours and the extras that were organised exclusively for Scenic were second to none. I particularly liked that there were no announcements made on board and all the activities were listed clearly on the daily plan for the following day. There was also a huge amount of information about the ports and excursions available in literature in the cabin and on the in-cabin entertainment system. The shore excursions are all included in the price and you have a choice of destination at each stop, or you can decide to stay on board and enjoy cruising along the river. The local guides were excellent and all road transport was provided by Scenic's own coaches, which follow the cruise and meet us at each stop. I would definitely travel with Scenic again. Read Less

We've river-cruised before but have never been on the Danube or to Budapest, Vienna and Prague. This itinerary seemed to fit all requirements and the cruise company was highly recommended. Excellent marks for the staff and service; the land tours were spot on and the local tour guides were exceptionally knowledgeable; the dining arrangements and food were very good with an excellent chef and staff - all very warm, welcoming and friendly, meeting customers, not out-of-site. Highlights of the itinerary for me were Salzburg and the 3-day extension in Prague - extra days would have been even better. For such a supposedly top-quality all-inclusive company, the range and quality of wines was quite disappointing. I realise Scenic try to incorporate local food and wines but this area is not known for top wines (apart form a few German ones) and being an Australian company situated in Europe with many US and UK customers, I expected more wine choices from Australia, France, NZ or USA. After several days I found out there were some other options available (also limited and not top quality) but this was not widely communicated; it seemed they were being kept secret. We had paid for a top-deck deluxe suite but the Scenic practice of mooring alongside their sister ship (Pearl) meant that we could not use our balcony because there was a bedroom of the Pearl very adjacent. We also had to keep the curtains closed whilst using the cabin which was not acceptable for this standard of cruising. I may consider travelling with Scenic again but I will not take another river cruise with them. I need better views from my balcony - and much better wines at this price! Read Less

The entire staff deserve a pat on the back as does the cruise director who kept everyone informed on a daily basis as to upcoming events. The food was a standout, with fantastic dining, unbelievable. The choice of excursions covered many and varied aspects of European life and attractions. Disembarkation was smooth (although we did not want to leave, having been thoroughly spoilt ). Our cruise consisted of 14 nights cruising from Budapest to Amsterdam with three days at either end in Prague and Paris. We chose this cruise because Scenic was recommended to us by quite a few people. The fact that everything is included appealed to us. The timing of the cruise enabled us to get business class flights for a much cheaper price, otherwise we may have chosen to cruise in warmer weather. However, the cold weather and quite a few rainy days didn't detract from our experience. We found the ship to be most comfortable with adequate room to relax without being surrounded by people all the time. The cabins were well appointed with quality bedding, toiletries and storage space. The balcony was wonderful to enjoy some time out with a glass of wine. We found all of the staff very helpful and accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble. If anyone found fault with the food provided, they would be hard to please. It was varied, plentiful (maybe too plentiful judging by my shrunken clothing) and of good quality. I took a galley tour towards the end of the cruise and was amazed at what the kitchen staff could accomplish in such a confined area. Day excursions were for the most part well organised and of good quality. My only wish is that maybe some of the walking tours were shorter and had less of the history (which I couldn't retain anyway) and more time to explore areas in our own time. I sometimes felt that we spent too much in some places and not enough in others. I understand though that in 14 days you can really only get a glimpse of so many cities and towns. Overall, I would certainly recommend and travel with Scenic again. Being a luxury cruise I particularly enjoyed the concept of unpacking only once and having your every need taken care of. A wonderful experience! Read Less

This was our first cruise of any description, so we decided on a week. We joined the ship at Budapest but because of low water in the Danube we had to move upstream, so didn't get to see anything a Budapest apart from an evening cruise downstream before turning round - although we did see what had inspired us - the Parliament Building - we were moored directly opposite. We stopped for two days in Vienna and explored there, but then we only got as far upstream as Passau, again because of low water levels. The ship, captain and crew could not be faulted. Our cabin was perfectly adequate, kept clean by our cabin steward, and morning tea served by our butler - luxury! A large walk=in shower with plenty of hot water. The amenities on board were plentiful, a good sized lounge/bar area which, I would think, could seat all the passengers at one go. The food was very good, always a nice selection on the buffet, or you could choose from the a la carte if there wasn't anything you fancied - which we did a couple of times. The passengers were mainly Canadian, Australian, American and a few English people, all very nice and pleasant. A variety of entertain was enjoyed in the lounge in the evenings - local dancers, etc. All in all we enjoyed our cruise, it was just a pity we didn't get up to Nuremberg as originally planned, but we were at the mercy of the water - no rain in Germany! We travelled from Budapest to Nuremberg!! as 2 couples and chose Scenic because we had been told it was the best. The ship was changed a few days prior to travelling because of the water levels being low on the Danube. Apart from one stop our cabins, 212 and 214, looked directly into the cabins of other boats which were docked alongside us. This meant the balcony was completely non functional and also we had no privacy making showering in the evening very difficult. The cabins were in darkness the majority of the time because of this. The food was, to say the least, below average. We dined on fillet steak and chips when we were looking forward to fine dining each evening. The only decent meal we had was on the one night that we were allowed to dine at Portobellos. That was delicious. The tours were very well organised and well orchestrated. We felt that everything was geared towards the Americans and Australians on board. No breakfast after 8.30am and dinner was7.00pm latest. One night it was 5.00 pm. The cabins were excellent, comfortable beds, spotlessly clean and well equipped. The "butler" was conspicuous by his absence. The only public areas were the restaurant and the lounge so there was nowhere to go to get away from the "entertainment " provided. After returning from our tour of Salzburg we were informed that the boat could go no further as the river levels were too low so the excursions were altered accordingly. Overall, we were very disappointed. It is not a cheap holiday and we felt that we did not get value for money. Read Less
