This was our first ever cruise of any kind and we had no idea what to expect. The booking was so easy and the pack that arrived with our boarding cards already printed and great information was impressive. My only complaint was that we had to fly with Easy Jet which I thought was not impressive for such a costly holiday although we were given Speedy Boarder passes which compensated a bit! We were met at the airport immediately we got to the Arrivals area and whisked away in a car to the ship. Embarkation was so easy and we were thrilled when we saw our cabin with the open air balcony with the amazing view of the Hungarian Parliament Building. On the first evening we were treated to a cruise to see the city by night. Every day was special in it's own way, waking up in a new place having cruised overnight was great and then daytime cruising towards the end of the week offered a relaxing way to see the river and the sights. The staff were wonderful especially Jana the cruise director who deserves a special mention. The local guides were fantastic, so knowledgeable and so proud to show guests around their cities. A visit to a Slovakian family home for an afternoon with coffee, cake and wine was one of the highlights of the week. Overall the food was really good, always fresh and well presented with plenty of choice and drinks whenever you wanted them with the meals. You can choose from tables of two, four, six and eight so it is easy to get to know other people on the boat. The evening entertainment was okay, perhaps the only thing that could be improved upon. We will definitely be looking to do another cruise and wouldn't hesitate to go back to Emerald Waterways. Read Less

We booked an Evergreen tour of Eastern Europe plus a river cruise on the Emerald Sun from Budapest to Amsterdam. We simply couldn't have been more satisfied or impressed! The ship was superb! The team running the ship were first class! The itinerary was great! We were particularly impressed with our Tour Director, Jana! She couldn't have been more helpful and obliging, and was always perfectly organised. Very impressive! Also the chef, Lemanya, was great - the food was wonderful. Also terrific were the fantastic wait staff. Just so efficient and helpful! The ship was very new, and the entire layout very well thought out! It included Australian power points. Plenty of cupboard space. Each room had a very nice bathroom, with a roomy shower. The enclosed 'verandah' was particularly good - it doubled as an inside sitting room and an outside balcony just by pressing a button to lower the top window. Pretty nifty! I highly recommend this ship and its entire ship's crew! You won't be disappointed! Read Less

We chose Emerald as a result of attending presentations by both Emerald and Scenic (same ownership). They said that Emerald was a step lower than Scenic in terms of luxury, but I would challenge anyone to fault Emerald for its comfort and a great cruising experience. Our cabin was large - a smaller one would have sufficed, but the extra room in the Owner's Suite was terrific. The food was excellent. We opted for the light breakfasts and lunches as it's so easy to overeat on a cruise ship. Dinners were fabulous ad while they were four course meals, serving sizes were just right - not too large. The crew were fantastic and provided terrific, very friendly service, led by a great hotel manager and cruise director. Excursions were thoroughly enjoyable and great learning experiences, particularly the visit to the Nazi rally grounds in Nuremberg. Most excursions involved walking tours with audio units so you could still hear the guide even if you wandered off a little. We appreciated the daily exercise. I cannot speak highly enough of the entire experience with Emerald. The only comment I would have is that it would have been nice to have had more time in Budapest. We did a Prague add on with Emerald before boarding in Budapest and we only got one day in this city. Read Less

My first river cruise with Viking was the France's Finest Cruise. It was absolutely perfect and extraordinary in every way. Wasn't sure Viking could match the perfection when I signed up for the Grand European but I now know to never give it a second thought about Viking's capability to provide the perfect blend of extravagance, excellent culinary experiences, and entertainment on board, while providing incredibly informative on shore excursions. Totally delighted with my cruise. We did a pre cruise option to Prague. Fabulous. Viking host staff were excellent. Everything went smoothly. The city was wonderful and our guides were excellent Once we got to Budapest, boarding the ship and settling in went with ease. Our Captain, Cruise Director, Hotel Manager, Dining Director, Chef, wait staff, cabin staff, pianist, all were excellent and totally there to make our cruise experience amazing. Each were attentive to our every need and desire. Carl and his colleagues were delightful always. I loved events planned for onboard entertainment. We all seem to have our favorites in the restaurant and lounge. There were so many wonderful cities and sites to take in every day. Each stop had it's specific interests. All of our onshore guides were very personable and well educated in the histories and interests of the cities and sites. We did a few extra excursions. I absolutely loved the Rothenburg ob der Tauber trip, and glad we signed up for that one. We were taken back in time to a beautiful medieval walled city, providing a wonderful authentic setting. This is just one of the many special experiences we enjoyed on our cruise. Absolutely loved every minute of every day. Thanks Viking Read Less

We checked out our options and alternatives. Viking River Cruises had the best options, the best offers and the best reviews. They were all well deserved! Starting in Amsterdam, we had opportunities to visit the city and surrounding countryside. Then the cruise began. The river views were outstanding and the many side trips highlighted and filled in our desire to see and know more about each city and community. The cruise staff met our every need and the places and people we got to see and meet were a delight. We shopped as much as we wanted and have the items to help us remember this great trip. "Entertainment" both on and off ship was great providing just the right amount of change of pace when it was needed and wanted. The one hiccup in and on the river (not a Viking issue) was easily overcome by Viking and its staff. Few other "lines" have the resources to overcome issues seamlessly. Our evaluation before our trip payed off and was reflected in a most amazing and wonderful trip, education and vacation. Read Less

I wanted to see the old cities of Europe and not have to move from hotel to hotel. My friend recommended Vantage and we unknowingly booked the same cruise. It was the most relaxing vacation I've ever taken. I hope to take a Vantage cruise every second year to different destinations but I would even take this cruise again. Water was so calm that we didn't know when we were moving - the most relaxing vacation I've ever taken. I loved that there were only 160 passengers so that it was interesting to meet a varied group of travelers and have meals with very nice people. Met some new friends too. The boat was kept very clean, inside and outside. Service was exceptional and the best food I've eaten in a two week period. Loved that they were so flexible in providing food from the café menu in the restaurant so when the menu got a little too fancy for me I could order a grilled steak or salmon. There was no shortage of excellent and fresh food and a good menu variety. I'm a believer in Vantage. Read Less

We went with friends who wanted to do this itinerary, so we did not choose it specifically for us. We chose Avalon Waterways on the recommendation of our travel agent, so we did not choose the cruise line specifically for us either. On both counts - the itinerary and the cruise line - our expectations were exceeded at every turn! Avalon Waterways was absolutely wonderful. The small ship size, the ship details & cabin appointments, the food & wine, the crew & service, and onboard entertainment were all outstanding. In addition, almost everything was included in the price...there were VERY few fees for options. We would highly recommend Avalon! The itinerary proved to be fascinating and beautiful. What added even more to the experience was the Avalon touch at each stop, which began with an informational chat hosted by the cruise director on the evening before each port. The tours ran on time (even a little early!) and the tour guides were some of the best we have ever experienced (and we have done a lot of traveling). The coaches were very nice, the tour groups fairly small and the listening devices worked well. There were activity level options, so we could do more active things, while others could choose a "gentle walkers" option. In addition, there was usually plenty of time in each port for an extra wander, a stop at a café or a bit of shopping. I'd like to add more note about the crew aboard the Avalon Expression. Each and every crew member (from the captain to food/bar servers to the cabin hosts to the front desk to the cruise director) was excellent, willing to serve, interact and help in any way they could! Avalon is not for the "masses", but rather for more precise guests who appreciate details. You will not be disappointed! Read Less

What a relaxing and satisfying way to travel! We enjoyed life on board as much as the cities and the included city tours. The crew on the Alsvin were amazing, from the room steward to the bartenders to the activities director. The food was out of this world, and there were many choices to satisfy anyone's needs. All in all, we will definitely book another river cruise on Viking. Highlights of the trip included the night sail through Budapest, the Cologne Cathedral, the windmills in Amsterdam and the market in Vienna. We took a tour of the market with the chef, which only cost the price of the subway, and he was affable and shared many stories about recipes, and how to prepare some favorites. I broke away from the group in Vienna and saw the Spanish Riding School practice session in the morning. It was worth every minute. Thank you for a great experience. Read Less

The staff was fantastic both in terms of their excellent service and their efficiency. If you needed any help with anything at all they would go out of their way to see that your needs or concerns were taken care of - our maid, Martina, didn't just clean and turn down our room, she brought my wife ice for her sore knee, extra pillows and just anything else we needed. She was by far the best at her job that we have ever encountered. The food was outstanding in terms of selection, taste and quality. It rivaled any five star restaurant that I have been at. The ship and the rooms are well laid out and very upscale. We had a balcony but didn't use it much because of all the presentations, entertaining games and other places to sit and socialize with our fellow passengers while watching the outside views at the same time. They don't have amenities like a pool or a workout room but you wouldn't have time for on board exercise anyway because you spend so much time walking while touring the various historical, architectural and cultural sites in each of the cities you are visiting. If you have an appreciation for great architecture, important historical sites and the cultures of other peoples, you will love this trip. Almost all the local people that we dealt with were polite, considerate, informative and very interesting. Sometimes complete strangers that we came across on our tours and walks would greet us in a friendly manner. I would definitely recommend this company for anyone planning a beautiful river cruise in Europe. Read Less

Don't have time for a long review. We had a deluxe veranda room. At first look, it seemed small, but everything was laid out nicely so it didn't seem cramped. The Modi itself seemed quite new...everything was nice and shiny. The service staff were excellent, led by the cruise director, Joey. The food aboard was really good...enjoyed both the set meals and the buffet. The lounge is very comfortable to sit and read. There wasn't much in the way of entertainment....a piano bar and a couple of guest performers. Really enjoyed all the ports. We did the "extension" run by Viking in Prague at the beginning of the trip. All the details, including the transfer to the ship were top notch. One thing I really appreciated with Viking was the quality of their tour guides....every one knew just about every detail of your port and they all spoke very clear English. My previous cruise was with Celebrity in the Adriatic and their guides had such prominent accents they were unintelligible over the whisper headset. None of that with Viking. All the ports were really interesting. once or twice I felt we didn't have enough free time, but for the most part I was satisfied. I definitely plan on returning to both Budapest and Vienna for a more in depth visit on a future date. One day is just enough to scratch the surface. Highly recommend this cruise. Read Less

My first time with Viking exceeded our expectations. The staff were wonderful and we enjoyed a great time traveling. The food was excellent and the excursions were very good. The only frustrating thing was not having enough time to explore the cities of Vienna and Budapest. My wife and I would recommend the Viking line to anybody. The domestic room service was appreciated and she was very friendly. Thew transfers to and from the airports were done most efficiently. Our trip were perfectly and we have many happy memories. The Thursday evening German dinner was very good. I only gained 10 pounds! The views from the deck as we traveled on the Danube were very pretty. Perhaps some commentary on the castles and villages that we saw would add to the experience. I give this trip a "two thumbs Up" rating. We intent in the future to take another trip. Read Less

This was our first river cruise, selected for the itinerary, length, and stops. We loved Budapest and all the cities on the cruise itinerary. We were blessed by superb weather. The meals served aboard ship were generally superb, and the portions were generous. With beer and wine available at both lunch and dinner, there was no need for purchasing any additional drink packages. The crew was very welcoming and responsive to any request. Our French Balcony stateroom was comfortable, if just a tad small, but it was just fine for us. The offerings for daily activities will keep your days pretty full, and one lesson we learned was to allow some "down time" to just relax aboard ship. Vienna is an awful lot for one day, and you yearn to return to spend longer. Definitely take the excursion to Cesky Krumlov, it is an absolutely charming town with great little restaurants. Information that the crew provides in advance of the various stops is very helpful. Onboard entertainment was intimate due to the small venue, but extremely entertaining - we had some truly great operatic vocalists! We spent several days in Budapest before the cruise started, and in Prague after the cruise was over, on our own itinerary/dime (as opposed to using the Viking pre- and post-trips - our view is that you get a better deal that way. To sum up, we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise and recommend it fully and energetically. Read Less

I had heard this was a concierge cruise, but it turned out to be a floating infirmary. This was our first river cruise ever. We booked the Budapest to Amsterdam, August 25 – September 11, 2016, dates along with the pre and post cruise extensions tours. Though we found the rates for the 2-day extensions tours high, $600 per person in Budapest and $960 per person in Amsterdam, we expected they would be great tours with lovely hotel rooms. However, we were given a mediocre room in the Budapest Corinthia hotel and at the Amsterdam Movenpick hotel; both of which I found on-line to be under $200 for double occupancy. Nor were the tours, themselves of the anticipated quality. Our cruise commenced August 28th- September 11, 2016. Upon arrival, we learned from fellow cruise traveler that our cruise was a singles cruse and that there was no single occupancy supplement being charged for rooms with only one occupant. By doing this, Uniworld was effectively charging couples more for a shared room than they were charging a single person occupying the same room type. And, by not having to share the room, the single person was far more comfortable than we were in our room, while we paid twice the amount for the same room type. The cleaning was sloppy. Our glasses in the bathroom were left dirty for several days. I reported this to the front desk and the house keeping head apologized. Perhaps this lack of attention to cleanliness was why as the cruise unfolded, one-by-one, the crew became ill with a respiratory disease. Yet they still continued to service our cruise. Next, the guests became ill with a respiratory disease. By mid-cruise, 25% of the guests were sick with high fever, head congestion and coughing. An unknown number of crew was visibly coughing and sick as well. Five days before our final stop, Amsterdam, both my husband and I became ill. When we returned home, my husband was diagnosed with pneumonia. A few days later I followed with a temperature of over 105 degrees and I also was diagnosed with pneumonia. Given that this cruise with extensions cost close to $20K, I thought if I contacted Uniworld regarding our negative experience that they would be more than happy to offer good-wiil and offer some sort of discount or refund but I thought wrong, they were not. The entertainment had a mediocre singer during happy hour. A couple of guest entertainers. The dinners were ok and the "free" wine was not of the best quality. The red was not drinkable and the whites were ok, given that the cruse was in Germany mostly the north. The port excursions were interesting though some were canceled. Read Less

We've always wanted to do a river cruise and after researching several cruise lines I decided on Viking. Love your ads on TV and we were not disappointed in anything. We wanted to see the Eastern European countries. The entire crew on the Prestige were outstanding, courteous and attentive to all our needs and questions. One of the dinner staff was exceptional, George, I did not get his last name. He served our wine and remembered from the very first night what we had and liked. We were traveling with two other couples. He is a very valuable member of the Viking organization and should be duly recognized by management. He will go far in your company. All meals & snacks were delicious. All the included tours and optional tours we took went like clockwork and your guides were very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. We loved everything about the cruise and will highly recommend Viking to all our friends. When we disembarked in Passau, Germany we took Viking motor coach for 3 day 4 night stay in Prague, Czech Republic. This was also a wonderful trip and I highly recommend going to Prague. We stayed at the Prague Marriott located within a block or two of "the old city center". Again, all the included & optional tours we took were outstanding. Viking River Cruises are a gem and now we know why they are number 1 in the industry. Thank you for a cruise of a lifetime. Read Less

My two older children and I decided to experience a river cruise. My son is a history teacher and he was interested in Nuremberg and we felt this trip which included Austria and Budapest, was perfect. The ship was fantastic, so intimate that we made many friends on the trip. Our staterooms were large enough to move around comfortably and had everything we needed. The scenery was beautiful and since we never lost site of land there were fantastic views of the Bavarian landscape. The dining was terrific. All the meals included wonderful choices and the fact that the head chef personally came around during the meals to greet and inquired if everything was satisfactory was great. Every evening the lounge was packed due to scheduled entertainment, which was amazing, such as singers singing Sound OF Music show tunes, and German Night or just the piano playing of Nikko I believe his name was, We talked, laughed and danced until we were done. The music was played as long as we wanted it to. All the included excursions were fantastic a were the optional tours. We went on all the optional excursions and spent less than half of what it we spent on ocean cruise excursions. The had the most wonderful, and knowledgeable crew ever. They couldn't have been nicer or more accommodating. I have recommended this cruise, specifically the Njord, to friends. One of which has scheduled the Romantic Danube cruise in November. We have scheduled two more cruises in 2018, Portugal and France. Can't wait!!! Read Less

Upon arriving at the airport, we were shuttled off directly to the ship. The captain took us on an extra special cruise down the river that evening, past the Hungarian Parlament buildings Which were all lit up for the night. They are spectacular. We came back along, under the bridges where hundreds of spectators were lined up on the bridges waving to us all. Was something special. The cruise is something special from beginning to end. The staff are extra special, especially the waiters. Also, the head chef arranged a shopping trip to a local market, where he introduced us to a few of his favorite stalls and vendors. One put out samples of various examples of his wares and drinks for us to try. Of course the history in Europe is unbelievable and the trip along the Danube with all the castles was especially interesting as our cruise director, Ben, gave an exceptional commentary of it all as we sailed passed. My husband and I highly recommend this cruise and of course Viking River cruises all, over the world. Read Less

Shopping in most places was blah, but that was expected. The food on the boat was excellent. We had a variety of dishes for each meal. We liked having the option of a less formal meal in another part of the boat (can't think of the name). The Bavarian dinner was lots of fun and delicious. We had done several other self drive river cruises in France and one Viking France river cruise and loved all. So we decided to do something longer and less stressful than another self drive version. Really enjoyed it all especially the up front extension time in Budapest and all the shore excursions. In hind sight we should have extended also in at least one more venue. We will think more carefully on that next time. Besides Regensberg and its glass shop and the sausage restaurant we were especially impressed by the windmills park in Holland. We had no idea that there is so much interesting technology involved in windmills, lots of fun was that shore excursion. The meals on board the Modi were generally good and we found the fellow passengers friendly and easy to talk with. However the Modi meals we felt were not as good as those on the Rhone river Viking cruise a few years back. On board service by all the crew was really excellent !!
