We choose this cruise for a birthday celebration, and it was fabulous. We did stay before the cruise and Scenic still provided transportation to the ship. The rivers were at a good level and we did not have to transfer ships as some have had to. All the excursions were well thought out, with at least 3 options to choose from. The cruise director had daily port talks explaining what would happen the next day and announce any additional entertainment. We had Hungarian dancers, Viennese dancers, violinists, zitar player, and the lounge singer/piano player. There were more but I cant recall all of them. The chef would give his menu recommendations and the food was very good. The restaurant manager/sommelier introduced the wine pairings. The service was first rate from the bus boys to the bartenders everyone was upbeat, and positive. The housekeepers were constantly cleaning nothing ever got dirty. Another plus was the free laundry, once during the cruise. Everything was just amazing. Sad to leave the ship, saying good bye to some incredible people. Scenic transferred our luggage to our hotel free of charge as we were staying a few extra days. Read Less

As two female friends travelling together for the first time we initially chose this cruise because it was all inclusive and therefore we didn't have the stress or worries about excursion choices, costs and tipping but the clincher was French Champagne available whenever the need arose!! We chose this particular cruise ship because of the plunge pool, which was excellent. How lovely to be able to refresh after a day's sightseeing. We arrived in Budapest one day before departure and stayed at the Marriott that Scenic use and we were very pleased with our room and the lovely views of the Chain Bridge and the lights along the Danube. Before boarding the Scenic Opal we walked to the Gallert Baths and enjoyed a relaxing swim before later returning to explore the Food Markets. We had no problems with touching base with the Scenic Rep in the Marriott and all went smoothly with organising our luggage to be transferred to the ship. The staff on the Scenic Opal were very welcoming and we were personally shown to our cabin on the Diamond deck - which had everything we could possibly need. We loved that we could put the window on the Sundeck down and enjoy the fresh air. It was a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast and Salvatore's special pancakes with Moet. Our cruise director Alex was amazing, creative, funny, organised and a great disco dancer (Australian Sense of Humour!!). We appreciated how he made our trip run so smoothly plus the extreme sacrifice he made to take us shopping for disco outfits in Cologne! The crew were exceptional - the bar team Robert, Stevan, Alex and Monika were entertaining and attentive. Our butler Putro was delightful and we so appreciated his great dance moves. The food and service was 10 star - every request was catered for. So if you are looking for a cruise that offers great sightseeing, beautiful cruising scenery and a fun on-board experience then the Scenic Opal - Jewels of Europe - Budapest to Amsterdam is for you. Emerald took excellent care of us from embarking to disembarking. We were the first guests to arrive for the new cruise. Though the staff was very busy getting the previous guests off , they were attentive to our needs. Nenad recognized that the members of our arrival group had traveled from long distances (the USA and Australia) and asked his crew to immediately ready our rooms so that we could refresh ourselves. Each day Darren did an excellent job arranging the excursions and events with every detail taken care of. The servers were always attentive but 2, Draganna and Jane, made an extra effort to remember our preferences and serve us accordingly. The food was always pleasing to the eye and palate and the chef should be applauded. We also are appreciative of the housekeeping staff that provided us with a clean and tidy room and clean linens everywhere. So many people seamlessly and beautifully providing us with a very pleasing experience. Standout events for us we’re the bike ride from Melk to Dürnstein and the Waltz Concert in Vienna. The bike ride gave us the opportunity to savor the scenery and the flavor of the small villages. We wouldn’t have missed it! The talents exhibited by the orchestra that entertained us in Vienna were exceptional! Read Less

As our first cruise, I chose Scenic because I wanted all inclusive - flights, tipping, trips and excursions, food and drinks and Scenic delivered. All of the staff went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed or wanted. The food was delicious, varied, pleasing to the eye and to the palate. If we didn't want the selections offered, there was a menu. Wines and beers from the regions we went through were very different and all good. Excursions offered variety - bus, walking, bike, boat rides, gentle walks, something for all. The guides were well versed in the history of the towns and landmarks we saw. History came to life every day we went out. The Jade rode so well it was like being soothed to sleep at night. The countryside was vibrant with colour from the people, the buildings and even the crops looked like home, so no one was home sick. From the smooth pick up at the airport to the return at the end, Scenic did it all smoothly. Entertainment on board included Hungarian dancing and music, a zither, waltzing, violin concert and every night Henrick provided music for listening and dancing. Salt room available, work out gym, walk track upstairs, lots of chairs to sit outside on or stay in the comfortable lounge. In 2 weeks, staff became friends. We knew names and where there families are from. Our fellow passengers were mostly Aussies, fellow Canadians, Americans, British, Hungarians, Serbs, Czechs. Pretty much world nations. Wonderful first trip and it has made us want to travel again, thanks Scenic. You have a wonderful fleet of crew ambassadors. Read Less

This trip was recommended by a friend and we were more than pleased with everything. It was simply our best vacation ever. Scenic spoiled us royally with every experience. The cruise director personally looked after everything. The crew were amazing, the food, the excursions were personalized for our group only. There were 153 passengers, just the right size and we met people from around the world. On board for 15 days and had spent time with at least 75% of a great group of travellers. The most important was that everything was included, including our shore excursions. The value was evident. We covered 4 countries and had personal guides with our group everywhere we went. Never at anytime felt rushed and lots of pleasant rest time and shopping time. Probably the most time spent with other people in our group than any other vacation, but quite enjoyable. I would highly recommend Scenic cruise line. We will be booking another trip with them soon. The entertainment was excellent. Our rooms very clean and comfortable. The food was exceptional. Read Less

We chose this trip based on recommendation of a friend who planned to go but didn’t book in time. It was absolutely great. Exceeded every expectation. The ship was wonderful, our cruise director, Mauro, fantastic and the staff especially Bianco could not be more accommodating. Super! The AvalonGO app is the best yet. It was so good to be able to take pictures and make notes at the time instead of trying to remember all of the valuable information provided by the guides. Also the recommendations of things to see and places to eat were invaluable. The excursions were well planned and the cost reasonable although I probably got carried away and over scheduled. I only say that because the app won’t let you double book but I probably should allowed more free time because the destinations were so wonderful - loved every minute and can’t wait to do it again. So happy to have the days in Budapest before the cruise as well as the time in Prague afterward. The folklore dinner in Hungary was excellent. The Danube is just gorgeous. To wake up and look out the window to see a cathedral on the hillside was thrilling. We really enjoyed seeing how the locks work. It was fascinating. Loved sitting on the Sky Deck and looking at the shoreline. The Intercontinental Hotel in Budapest was great. Loved our time there. How nice of Avalon to have someone available for advice at the hotel. Embarkation was smooth-did lose a suitcase because the tag came off but was easily retrieved. The cabin was clean, well decorated and we loved the floor to ceiling windows. Particularly liked the small ship and the atmosphere and ambiance. Plenty of room without the traffic of larger ships. I don’t think We’ll ever do the large ship again. The food was quite excellent with a huge variety of options all with a wonderful flavor. Who would think that mustard soup would be so extraordinary? The port talks were very interesting and the entertainment exceptional. We made new friends which we hope will be for life. Loved, loved, loved this trip! Read Less

We wanted to cruise the Danube, and Emerald gave us the best value for money. Being met at the airport was easy, Staff pleasant and helpful. Embarkation was easy too. We were met as soon as we left the coach, our cases taken from us. Check-in was so quick and we were then given a personal explanation of our cruise card and taken to our cabin. Ship well laid out with a sun deck, lounge and a small pool area.Cabin, clean and tidy and not overly large, but sufficient room for the two of us. Complimentary water in the cabin and every time we went on a tour complimentary water was provided. Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate was available in the loung e area 24/7, and was good quality. Buffet style breakfast and lunch, with plenty of choice.Continental style breakfast was available, in the lounge, before the main breakfast in the dining room, and aslo after as well, until 10:00 am. A light lunch was also available inthe lounge as well as a full lunch in the dining room. Dinner had a choice at every course, and also had the staple steak, chicken and salmon too. Wine was plentiful at lunch and dinner. Service was excellent through out the ship. All excursions were well organised and had excellent guides and all ports were very interesting. No problems at disembarkation and was very well organised Read Less

Viking does a great job marketing and we were sold a “first class experience” when booking one of two explorer suites. These suites are right above the engines in the back of the boat. Low water on the Danube exasperated the loudness if the suite and the vibrations made our teeth chatter. We had to be moved to another room on the cruise. Horrific experience and very poor customer experience. Viking also has no automation for passenger boarding and leaving ship. Traditional ocean liners have an automated system where you put in your card upon entering and exiting the ship. Viking does this work paper cards that you are given (and have to wait in line for) each time you enter or exit the ship. Ridiculous and so old school! They cruise officers were always looking for people at each port. I would also never add anything port extensions on with Viking. Very poor hotels, especially the Corenthia in Prague Read Less

We paid for our cruise with all the expectations of neophyte river cruisers and are crushed that our river cruise of a lifetime ended up being a horrible bus ride through Eastern Europe. Due to mechanical malfunctions on the Viking Embla our tour was unable to hold to schedule resulting in canceled excursions, creative docking at unknown sites (we even had to break through a factory fence at one point in order to re-board our ship) closed locks, restricted use of the sun deck, after dark "scenic cruising", and days of sailing without stopping for excursions in order to "get back on schedule". We thought the staff was superb, they tried valiently to make us happy and service was impeccable, however after day 10 or 12 I began to think I was suffering from 'Stockholm Syndrome'. Our on board program director explained daily what was going to happen the next day, because of where the ship was in relation to where it should have been this excursion or that excursion was cancelled but we are offering a substitute or we could "stay on board with us..lunch will be at 12:0 in the in dining room...etc. " After several of these substituted excursions many of us stopped going as the excursions involved hours of bus rides each way. We wanted our cruise, not a bus ride. Viking is not making a significant compensation offer to us, in fact their offer shows little respect or understanding of our ruined trip. They seem not to care about customer satisfaction. We want our money back, Viking should have given us a full refund and canceled the cruise rather than take all of us down the river to the bus embarkation points. Viking knew before we boarded that the Embla could not deliver the cruise as promised. The schedule disruption was not due to river depth rather it was the Embla's malfunctioning engine and Viking's money grubbing refusal to cancel the cruise and refund our tickets. Read Less

This is was our first river cruise. We are seasoned ocean cruise travelers. This cruise started with a delay in boarding the ship of one day due to maintenance problems on the previous cruise. We only had one day that we went to a port and got off the ship and toured the venue. That was on day 12 when we visited Cologne Germany. All the other days we spent more time on buses than at the scheduled venue. We had an additional day when the ship was put in dry dock. Thus we were now 2 days behind. In order to make up time scheduled venues were skipped. The crew and staff were excellent, but the cruise was very bad. One of the highlights of the cruise is to cruise the Rhine and see all the mid evil castles. When we got to that point on the cruise it was 8:30 at night and dark! No castles I was notified via “form” letter 4 days after returning off the cruise that Viking was sorry and that they would give us 25% off our next cruise. Who would ever go on another cruise and get this type of cruise. Viking must think I am stupid. To spend $14,000.00 for this and get no compensation is totally wrong. Viking should be ashamed. Our ship was changed from the Jasper to the Crystal a few days before we departed. Slight disappointment. They allowed us to board at 12:00 instead of 3pm as we had to be out of the hotel room by 11:00am. We enjoyed drinks and met other guests in the lounge and the room was ready by 1pm. The ship was excellent though. Very clean and comfortable. It had been updated. The state room was perfect for our needs. Plenty of storage room. The balcony with the ability to close the full glass sliding doors and able to close the power glass window on the railing, was wonderful. We were on the second floor and it was certainly not second class. In fact it was the best location for closeness to the main activities on the ship. I.e. Dining room, guest lounge. Staff was excellent, very friendly. Couldn’t do enough for you. The butler came to our room shortly after we got settled in and explained his services. He was there for our every need gave us his direct number to call anytime. Made us feel very comfortable. The food and drinks were beyond excellent. Very professionally prepared and presented. Great variety of food with multiple choices. Smaller potions and that was nice, but you could ask for seconds on anything. There was always smaller print on the bottom of the menu that gave you the option for the simpler basic items. Burgers, meat and potatoes, etc.. The drinks, well anything you wanted. Just ask. Local beers were always available. Fancy cocktails made to order it you preferred. They had no set closing time. After the nightly entertainment we would sit around and socialize maybe too late some nights. We were never asked to leave but felt was likely last call after lifting out feet for the vacuum to go by. Late night, 11 to 12:30 am, visiting with the staff was most enjoyable. Learning about their way of life working on a cruise ship and family. The on board nightly entertainment was very good. Nice variety through the 2 weeks. Something for everyone. Many opportunities for socializing and dancing. It was your option to partake, but get there early as the seating always ran out. The choice of excursions was excellent. From guided to self-guided tours. Local tour guides were good. E-bike tours were great, Sign up early. Only 40 E-bikes on board. The info explaining each tour before you signed up was good. Explained all aspects. What you would see and do and how much walking was involved. They always had a gently walking group. Read Less

We wanted a river cruise for a 70th birthday celebration. Saw this one advertised in daily mail and it covered the area we wanted to cruise to. We started at Budapest and travelled to Bratislava , Durnstein, Melk and Vienna. We were unable to cruise last day due to river level.. however, the choice was there to travel by coach or stay on ship. Everything was well organised and passengers were kept up to date with any changes. It was a fantastic choice. Everything was run very smoothly from the time we were met at the airport until we ended the cruise. The service in horizon bar and main restaurant was quick friendly and fun when other passengers were celebrating birthdays or anniversaries. Yes From the cruise director, reception staff, waiters etc and cabin attendants , all were friendly helpful and welcoming. The evening entertainment was run by Neil after the evening meal. The juke box jury night was fun and it was great to see the staff join in. From cabin attendant to waiters. Neil also arranged golf tournament and aqua aerobics. The guided tours were very well organised with plenty of knowledgeable guides. You could choose the pace of the walking tours to suit your needs and if you wanted a more strenuous tour this was available.bottled water was available each day to take ashore . On previous ocean cruises this was an extra. Each evening Michael the cruise director detailed the next days events and choices. The choice of meals was wide ranging, very tasty with different options if you did not want local dishes. There was also a large choice for breakfasts. The service was also first.class. Maybe we have high expectations? I just don't understand how so many people can say "Fantastic, Wonderful, Amazing" In my experience there is always room to improve. On our cruise we had "lock" problems so were unable to reach our last port of call and were transferred via bus. Made for a very long and uncomfortable day. In general the ports we visited were nice, but I wouldn't be interested in returning for extended stays, other then Budapest and Prague. The food on board was OK, but only 40% of it seemed to change daily, they kept serving the same items over and over again. I was also surprised to find we were forced to join other people at meal time. I understand many people enjoy this, but me and my husband like to enjoy a quite dinner after a long day of touring share our thoughts of the day. The idea of a peaceful relaxing dinner with each other, a glass of wine, is just what we are looking for. However, being pushed into making small talk with strangers each night was not what we were expecting. After all is said and done, we will go on another river boat cruise, but more prepared with the pluses and minus. Read Less

We've done ocean cruises for years and decided to try a river cruise because we always wanted to see the Danube. We chose Uniworld since it was a boutique line with good reviews. We did the 9 night Delightful Danube and Prague on the SS Beatrice on July 24, 2019. We opted for the 2 day pre-extension in Budapest. Overall the vacation was good. But given the price, I would say it failed to live up to our expectations. The Good: - Food was excellent. That part was very much in line with our expectations. - Itinerary was excellent. I liked river cruising and especially the locks. I wasn't sure if I would like river cruising (being an ocean cruiser), but it was nice. - Ship was nice. - Staff was for the most part very good. - All tips included which was nice. - All drinks included (but I'm sure we paid for that with the price). - Many excursions were included (but that wasn't necessarily good - see the ugly below). - Cabin was nicely decorated. It was pretty tiny, but we knew that going in. Just be aware that it is very small. The bathroom would be hard for an elderly person (in my opinion. One annoyance to me was that light from the hallway came around the door on all 4 sides so the cabin was never really dark at night. French balcony was nice. - Pre-Cruise in Budapest. I would definitely recommend extending your trip in Budapest. Amazing city and you really need more time to see it than you will otherwise get on the 7 night cruise. - Post-Cruise in Prague. I would also recommend this as well. I loved Prague. Would definitely do this since you should see it. The Not so Good: - Public areas were limited. There weren't too many places you could go on the ship the get out of your small cabin. The top deck is closed between Nuremberg and Regensburg so that took away a nice option leaving only the lounge. If a talk was going on in the lounge, you then really had no options. That final day (when the sun deck was closed due to low bridges), the ship felt much, much too small to me. - Excursions were not that great. I actually thought they were pretty poor. Nothing amazing and certainly nothing close to what we paid for with Celebrity in Greece. We even paid for a Masterpiece excursion one night and even that wasn't really that amazing. I was disappointed with the excursions. We could have done much better on our own and if I did this cruise again that is exactly what I would do. - Information was poor. I've never been on a cruise before with such little information being provided. We didn't realize until we were on the ship that the ship was leaving Budapest the following morning. We thought we had a day to see Budapest and all we had was a bus tour (included) which did not give a very good overview of Budapest. Had we not done the pre-cruise stay in Budapest we would have been very upset. - Excursion groups were HUGE. Ship may have been tiny (130 or so passengers), but the excursion groups were very big and many did not break up in to smaller groups. We did a bike tour in Austria that had 65 people riding in one large group. Our last cruise was with Celebrity in Greece with thousands of passengers and we never had groups this big. To me it ruined the small ship feel since the excursions were anything but small. - Open seating was a pain for a group of 4. Being a family of 4 in two cabins, we wanted a table of 4 for dinner. It was hard to ensure that since there were not many 4's and some of those were reserved by larger groups (which is annoying). So we always had to be at dinner right as it opened to ensure we got a table of 4. Not the most relaxing feeling when you have to worry about that each evening. Not sure why they allowed so many tables to be "reserved" like they did. The Ugly: - Cruise Manager was poor. This was our biggest gripe on the cruise. The cruise manager several times gave out false information about tours. It almost seemed like she had never done this before (but I know she's been doing it a while). On the biking tour from Austria to Passau, we were under the impression that drinks at the "Beer House" stop were included in the excursion. Prior excursions included water so we figured this would be no different since we were biking 18 miles. We only got water for ourselves and 2 kids at the Beer House. Prior to biking away, we were told that some tables hadn't paid their bill. Turns out we had to pay for that water. It was rather embarrassing - especially for another guest who didn't have euros on him to pay. I mentioned to the Cruise manager immediately upon returning to the ship that she might want to explain that to future guests. She said it was mentioned at the talk the night before which we hadn't attended (since we had already signed up for the tour). She seemed rather indignant to my wife and I - like it was our fault. I would think that given the cost of this vacation, they could actually mention something like this at the onset of the tour itself. I mean it's a vacation and why should we have to attend every little briefing just to hope we get the tiny details that you would think would be given to you on the actual tour itself. But it was just another sign of the poor information provided and for that I totally blame the Cruise Manager. Recommend? I don't think I would recommend Uniworld to someone who wanted to River Cruise. For the price, I was definitely not impressed and the organization on the ship was very much lacking. If we river cruise again (which I expect we will), we will try another company. Read Less

I chose to cruise as I haven't had a holiday for over 25 years and thought that I needed one after a rather stressful divorce. After researching the various options available I chose to book an eleven day trip with Saga sailing down the Danube from Budapest for eight days with three days in transylvania. I know what you are all thinking, "SAGA"!!!!! Now I just qualify as I am 51 and thought that it would ease me into the holiday "thing" I was collect from home and driven to the airport, this I found to be an excellent service. The ship was waiting in Budapest and my luggage was taken and delivered to my cabin whilst I booked in and offered refreshments. The reception staff were nothing but wonderful and were very helpful and knowledgeable making the embarkation painless. After settling in my cabin, which was a reasonable size considering the size of the ship and let's face it, we were on a river I was pleasantly surprised to be seated in the restaurant with a very good four course meal. The waiting staff were excellent and very friendly. The following days were more of the same food and I found the staff so friendly and willing to help in any way possible. I have to say that the cruise director, a young lady by the name of Adina to be the most helpful, patient and knowledgeable person I have had the pleasure of meeting. Even joining the crew and passengers in the end of cruise open mic event. Upon reaching our destination our luggage was collected and transferred to the awaiting coaches for the next part of the holiday. My overall experience onboard was one of overwhelming enjoyment and certainly placed my anxieties about solo travel to the back of my head, in fact they left. Overall I would highly recommend this ship and if I could sail with the highly professional Adina again, I would. Read Less

We sailed to destinations I would not have ever imagined of visiting and were able to experience the most delicious, superb dining venues onboard. The staff is the best I've experienced in the industry and by day 3 was greeted by my first name. The service levels are best in the industry. You have non stop wine and beers during lunch and dinner and get to take your full glass with you (something they don't allow on most cruise lines) The cocktail hour drinks vary by day and its a great ambiance before dinner. The four dining venues could not be any better...The Chef's Table experience, just WOW....then there is Jimmy's where we had the most amazing Osso Bucco that I've ever had in my life...Al fresco has the most amazing view od the Danube river. This cruise was a nightmare. Insufficient air conditioning in the room and on the excursion buses. They were not equipped to deal with the heat factor. I realize the weather is unpredictable; however, Viking should have been able to keep their passengers comfortable on the ship, as well as on the buses. There was virtually no entertainment. The balcony was unable to be used due to docking right next to another river boat or next to a wall. It was a very expensive trip and nothing about it was acceptable. The Viking advertisements are very distorted and it was nothing like we expected. We are retirees and live on a fixed income. We thought this costly trip was going to be a trip if a lifetime. It was anything but. Very disappointed in this holiday and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. If you are considering a Viking cruise, think twice. Wa Read Less

We have been ocean cruising for over thirty years, taking at least 2-3 cruises a year, but never been on a river cruise. Looking back over the whole trip I doubt I would do it again. The ship was nice, we had a Royal Suite on the top deck which was ‘compact’ , you couldn’t sit on the toilet without hitting your knees on the toilet roll holder. The dining was excellent, the food variable, well cooked and stylishly presented. The Head Chef and Dining Room Manager where always available to us and extraordinary helpful and the Hotel Manager, Mr Mauricio ( I think) even shared his private supply of Piri Piri oil with me. Richard, our cruise director , was amazing. He is definitely the best cruise director I have come across in over 30 years. Always pleasant, unflappable and very amusing as well as highly efficient. He made our trip. The bar service was generally good. If I had a criticism it was that there was insufficient waiter service on the pool deck when we were sailing. Regarding the tours the concert in the Liechtenstein Palace was definitely the highlight. Some of the other were just too long. When we stayed onboard the day we had to make an unscheduled stop because of low water levels, it was unfortunate that the pool was out of action for cleaning on a day when the temperatures were 38=40C surely that could have been changed to accommodate the circumstances My main complaint was about the hairdresser who had never heard of a hot brush, didn’t have any rollers and unbelievably ran out of hairspray. I asked her why she didn’t tell me before I went, or even give me chance to go to my cabin and collect my own but she had no answer for that. As we had been moored up all day, on an unscheduled stop, I asked her why she hadn’t gone off the ship to the Aldi supermarket just across from the gangway but she told me she hadn’t had time. Firstly, I can’t believe that as I had been able to change my appointment as she had spaces, and because of the unscheduled stop and the adjusted tour timings other people had cancelled their appointments, and secondly i’m sure if she had asked Richard or the hotel manager they could have arranged for someone to fetch some. Surely she must have been aware several days before that she was running out or down to her last can? Read Less

We arrived late in Amsterdam & nobody was there to meet us I contacted Viking and was told to take a taxi & they would reimburse me. I did and Viking made good on their word. Our room was very nice and the staff was delightful, the food was excellent. We had a bad odor in our bathroom that had to be tended to twice and still never went away. I have occupational asthma & the smell triggered an asthma attack. I spoke with the agent that booked our cruise after we returned & he said someone fro Viking would contact me but as of 11/19/2019 no one has. The cruise director noticed that I was having a hard time breathing and ask about my asthma, I told him that I did not have enough medication to last the rest of the trip. He went out of his way to help me obtain more medication (this is above & beyond my expectations. We met a lot of lovely people on the ship, making it a pleasure to travel. The staff always remembers our name and the time of wine we drink. Read Less

We had done a river cruise 2 years ago with another company. We were completely disappointed in everything about the cruise, except for the ports of call. The tour director was detached, never around, they said all inclusive, that was the biggest lie ever. After that experience we were very reluctant to do another river cruise again. I had voiced my concerns with friends in Perth Australia, they said try Scenic, they had tried it and loved it. So here we were ready to get on board, nervous, a little weary and very anxious Getting picked up at the airport in a private transfer was excellent. No waiting, no fuss. The driver was friendly and helpful. Arriving at the ship, well, let;s just say we gave a sigh of relief. They actually had security, the other ship did not. We were greeted at the desk like we were old friends. The desk staff, kind courteous and efficient.. The tour director, Darinka, she is awesome, I would cruise with scenic just to have her on board again! We were told go have a snack and a drink and they will collect us and bring us to our cabin shortly. Indeed shortly was correct! Our cabin #316, was excellent, loads of storage space, huge adjustable bed, sofa, chairs, a full bathroom with a bathtub and a balcony. A chilled bottle of Champagne awaiting our arrival, fresh fruit and a wonderful butler. Our butler gave us a run down of everything in the room, how to lower the window... The cabin, clean, a mini bar well stocked and we could order room service anytime. Every day there was a daily briefing on the next port of call, dinner, drinks and any info you needed. The dining was excellent, as professionals that we are we always like to dine alone since we see so many people in everyday , here we could. It was so nice to be able to do that. The food was excellent, great choices for vegetarians, great quality, great wine choices. Every evening there was some entertainment, we danced the night away a few evenings. The excursions well planned and executed, the welcome back home with a cool towel is always welcoming. Overall, we were very happy with Scenic, we will book another cruise for 2021 with them without hesitation. Read Less

We chose Avalon since we had sailed the Rhine with them 10 years ago and had a wonderful experience. We chose this Blue Danube cruise because it was 2 nights in Budapest, over night in Vienna and 2 nights in Prague. We had a first class experience again! Everything was phenomenal from the cabin to the food to the excursions we picked. We highly recommend all the excursions that have to do with food and wine both afternoon tours for tastings and evening tours for dinners and folk shows. We also ordered a basic Anniversary celebration package and it was wonderful. We had a special table in the dining room with 6 guests (folks we had met on the cruise). Our guests received beautiful invitations, our table was decorated, we had champagne and a cake and then our cabin as also decorated and we had champagne, flowers, candy and fruit in the cabin. All of which made this anniversary especially memorable. Avalon also came through with a free excursion to Salzburg and a free lunch in Regensberg when they were forced to change our itinerary due to low water on the Danube that prevented us from getting to Nuremberg. The speed with which they changed arrangements for 150 people some of whom were flying out of Nuremberg was amazing. None of the passengers could have asked for better customer service. Should we chose to do another river cruise it will definitely be on Avalon. Read Less

As travel agent, we wanted to try out the Emerald service, and we are convinced, that the service is fabulous and excellent. We sailed from Nuremberg to Amsterdam, in July 2019. After arriving from the airport we got on board in minutes. The staff is extremely polite, and nice at the reception, in the restaurant, in the bar etc.. The pool has a relaxing atmosphere. The city tours have been well organized with professional guides, comfortable couches. We had great opportunity to visit the most important places, monuments, castles and churches. During our free time we have been good advised to explore the cities in an independent way. Every evening we had various entertaining programs with a lot of fun and laughing moments. The whole crew made our trip enjoyable, comfortable and memorable. We enjoyed our breakfast buffet every morning and 4 courses dinner each evening as well as our lunch combining buffet and menu. Additionally we had joyful teatime and late night snack. All food was fresh and well prepared. Read Less

We choose this cruise line based upon square footage of staterooms and floor to ceiling windows. Also , we liked the smaller ship capacity. This was an excellent cruise from beginning to end. Staff from cruise director to housekeeping to wait staff were professional and courteous. There was always a variety of hot and cold foods served daily. Although the overall quality of the food was good, not great, the dining experience was excellent. It was also worry free to have excursions paid for as well as wine service included in lunch and dinner. I only experienced Tea Time once, but that was lovely as well. I needed to see a doctor while on the cruise and the Cruise Director could not have been more helpful, and again professional. The nightly entertainment after dinner was always a fun way to end each evening. I would have loved to have taken advantage of the Recreational activities offered such as Zumba, Yoga and a bike excursions but was honestly too tired from the days activities. Read Less
