We chose Scenic based on a recommendation from someone who had reviewed all cruise lines. This was above and beyond any of our expectations. Crew was professional but fun to be around and there was great demographics for all passengers. The excursions that were available provided something for everyone and there was enough flexibility to allow for last minute changes. And there was opportunities for self-guided touring if you chose to have a day that was not so structured.. Meals were good and tailored to represent the country we sailed through. portions were adequate. Also nice to have choices of venues and times for meals. daily updates ensured that you knew what was going on everyday. On-line application allowed you to be in touch with points of interest both on the river and withing the towns visited along the route. Some of these features could have been better explained early in the cruise, however to ensure maximum enjoyment. Read Less

We heard about this cruise from our travel agent when we asked about Danube cruises. The trip far exceeded our expectations in every way. The crew was friendly, helpful, skilled and talented. The food was served beautifully. The choices were always plentiful and I appreciated the size of portions- enough but not too much. Coffee of all kinds, tea and pastries are always available. The excursions were led by locals who knew their business. I do a lot of reading and research before traveling and the tours were great. Be aware that the staterooms are small but they contain lots of storage- plenty for two people. Also be careful to ask about the activity level of the tour- they usually offer two levels with the leisurely one having fewer steps and hills. Our cruise had a lady with a walker ( in her 80s) who did everything at the leisurely level. Read Less

The people on the ship with you were friendly. The restaurant was great looked forward to our meals, we had great company, Viking takes care of everything, the tours were all we needed to see everything they are well thought out. The cabin was just what we needed we had the veranda, it was a good choice. The whole experience was wonderful, we recommend it. The cursing on the river is a great time it’s so great to be so close to the water, going through the locks and experiencing the cruising and the town’s,Ii had no idea Germany was that beautiful, the shore excursions were really good. We weren’t sure what to expect but now we do, we look forward to going again, Read Less

I wanted to try Scenic because I wanted an all inclusive vacation where I did not have to worry about anything. We had first class food and service all the way. The crew and passengers were friendly. The excursions were well done with no detail left unturned. I liked the electric bike option and we used them several times. I had a medical problem while docked in a small German town. Every effort was made to make my situation easier, and we were back on the ship within a short amount of time. The tour director was funny but very detailed oriented. The cabin was very comfortable and decorated nicely. Bedding was luxurious and the bed was extremely comfortable. The pace of the cruise was just right. My only downside was when the cruise was done, I didn’t want to leave. I could have traveled another two weeks with them. Read Less

Started in Prague, not on the river, and Budapest. The history, the people, the land, the architecture (Cathedrals, Churches, towns/villages, castles, bridges, etc.) were marvelous! Meals on the boat were spectacular both in variety and presentation beginning with the local cuisine. With the many shore excursions you had the opportunity to try the best of food the various ports had to offer. Can not say enough about the history seen first hand from the Czech Republic all the way to Amsterdam. Can not complement the staff enough, kudos to all. The Concierge, the waiters/wait staff, the cabin staff, etc. were all polite and very professional. The Cruise Director, Anthony, was courteous, dynamic, and extremely knowledgeable of all the locations where we went. All the shore excursions were well planned and the guides were very enthusiastic and thorough with personalities that made these trips very enjoyable. I do not have the words to express how happy we were with Viking! From the time you got off the airplane where you were met to the time you had to leave, Viking personnel were there to help. Viking is a first class operation and we look forward to our next adventure with them!! Read Less

This was our first, but not out last, river cruise. My husband and I loved everything about cruising with Avalon. It's interesting to hear people talk about other lines. We would choose Avalon again without hesitating. The service was GREAT. We might go for an upper cabin next time. It's true that you don't spend so much time in your room, but I did not realize that the room would be below the site line of the window. Next time... :)) I want to give a shout out the chef and his team. We had a special meal and they simply could not have been more accommodating. I don't know about the other special requests, but the vegan meals prepared for us were spectacular. The first night we got white rice and they asked how we liked the dinner. We said it was great but we preferred brown rice and whole grain. Done! They were fabulous. Thanks again to the chef and his gang! The sporty excursions did not disappoint. The biking, hiking, and canoeing were better than we expected. Thank you Avalon. See you again. Read Less

But got email to say come for 9:30 am. But bus at 10: only big enough for 10 people and luggage and we were about 35 people. Then 2and 1/2 drive with no bathroom break. Not sure who was a fault but certainty a disconnect. Staff on board were excellent and could not do enough for us. Chef and head Maitre De worked together to develope gluten free diet for my husband. We thought entertainment was only so/so. We did not have oompa band. But social director sang 2 nights one would have been ok. All sightseeing tours were free and were excellent. We enjoyed wine tastings and beer tasting free on tours. We enjoyed sitting up going through locks. The uptop BBQ was great. We would choose Emerald again. Awesome! Read Less

This cruise surpassed our expectations. The ship was beautiful. Spacious well equipped cabins, great public spaces and staff who went out of their way to be friendly, efficient and welcoming. The cruise director and entertainment manager in particular did a great job of keeping us informed and organised! The food was plentiful and varied bringing in the traditions of the ports we were visiting. The shore excursions were very well organised and the guides very knowledgeable about their home towns giving us a wide historical overview and plenty of free time to explore independently. They catered well for those who wanted to be more active and also for those with more limited mobility. The evening entertainment varied between quizzes musical entertainment from our very talented entertainment manager and local groups brought in for the evening eg Hungarian folk dancers and an oompah band! Other activities were also available during sailing times. Read Less

We had a dream of travelling from Budapest to Amsterdam one day. After some research we chose Emerald Waterways, and Emerald Sky as our river ship. I consider myself a seasoned ocean cruiser and was anxious to see what river cruising would be like. Well we were not disappointed! In fact it may be harder to pick the larger cruising vessels again! I highly recommend this itinerary, each day was amazing and soon it seemed unimaginable that the next day could be better. We enjoyed Emerald Sky very much. The staff, crew were very friendly and helpful. Our cabin steward was fantastic. The Activity Director was quite the entertainer. We found that the breakfast and lunch meals were very good for the whole trip. The first few evening entrees were not the best but that quickly changed. There were six of us in our group and we all commented how the food just got better and better. We noticed that our ship had very good docking locations in the towns which made touring quite easy and enjoyable. Already looking forward to booking our next river cruise! Read Less

Scenic provided an all in one totally all inclusive cruise with a terrific itinerary and solid caring support throughout the entire experience. Scenic delivered on all of the advertised features and programs and they were very co operative with our request for an early flight overseas before our scheduled departure as our flights to and from were both part of our package. We also chose the Prague extension at the end of the river cruise and we were certainly not disappointed as both the quality and value of this option was once again incredible. We also had a fantastic Scenic tour guide with us throughout the entire experience in Prague. We would certainly recommend and wouldn’t hesitate ourselves to once again travel with Scenic. It was an awesome experience that we will never forget. All of the extras with the Scenic enrich program were also incredible and thoroughly enjoyable and they were all exclusive for just our Scenic group. We have never received this kind of treatment and attention before on any of our previous vacation experiences. Thank you to Scenic and all of their staff for really delivery something very special. Dates fitted - I wanted to do a river cruise in Europe- friends had a conference in Vienna so it seemed like a good idea to combine work and pleasure. I had completed a Nile river cruise in egypt and loved it so thought a chance to see some of the areas in Europe that I hadn’t visited would be good. The staff and crew have been excellent- especially the captain and butlers. Cabins are good except that the very small shower is difficult for taller people. Entertainment was exceptional - all activity alternatives were great - I enjoyed all of the ones I chose - particularly enjoyed the bike rides - especially the ride through Vienna. Musical entertainment was outstanding - loved string quartet, palais Lichtenstein, piano recital etc. also liked being able to walk each morning on the upper deck track. I found the gym fairly limiting as it was too small and very airless. A defibrillator should be mandatory and a trained medical staff member present. Overall I loved my cruise and would consider joining another scenic cruise. The most impressive thing is that you are exceedingly well looked after and that you don’t pay for anything once you are on board. Food is amazing and all food and beverages are provided with great generosity. Thank you Team Scenic. Read Less

Always dreamed about being able to experience a Viking Cruise and it did not disappoint! We did a 2 day extension in Budapest prior to boarding the ship. One of the best things we did was hire a private guide to show us the city from a locals perspective and it was well worth it! The embarkation process could not have been more smooth and even though we arrived 2 hours early, our room was ready within 5 minutes! We were fortunate enough to have one of the two Explorer state rooms, and it was well worth the extra money. To have a living room space as well as the wrap around balcony was a huge advantage, especially on such a long trip. Most importantly...the staff! I have been on many cruises in the past and I can say with absolute confidence...they were the best I have ever seen! By the second day, they knew everyone's name, cabin # and even what you preferred to drink. Every person we encountered was exceptional. The Program Director had more energy and personality than you could ever hope for and the Hotel Manager was truly amazing. He went above and beyond in every way. We did most of the included tours and each one was a great introduction to the city and it's highlights. We have already started looking at which cruise we want to do next! Read Less

We chose the Scenic line for the features of the ship and for the all inclusive vacation they offered. The "leave your wallet at home" line resonated as did the itinerary. We were not disappointed. The ship and the service was absolutely five-star and the on shore excursions were well planned and interesting, and many times very educational. The idea of a private concert by wonderful ensemble in an amazing venue was unbelievable. And then, because dinner was a little earlier that evening, that they then gave us another light meal when we got back was pure pampering! It seemed that we had gourmet dining three meals a day, every day. And when, after only a few days, the chief butler asked me by name what he could do for me, blew me away! The personal attention of the Cruise Director was above and beyond. At disembarkation he offered to arrange a taxi to the apartment we had rented for a further five days, and after establishing a time, he said, "Just go and relax in the lounge. I'll come find you when your ride arrives." If this is typical Scenic cruising, why would I choose anything else? Read Less

I had previously (last year) done a cruise with Scenic and was very satisfied. I originally chose this line because they were one of the few who offered a single cabin with a balcony. As it turned out I was lucky enough to upgrade to a double cabin on my first cruise, and a deluxe double cabin on this cruise, which was wonderful. The extra space makes quite a difference - as a single I probably spent more time in my cabin than some couples would. I arrived in Budapest a couple of days prior to the cruise and stayed at the Marriott Hotel, along with a number of other Scenic guests. I had plenty of time to explore the city which remains one of my favourites. There was one hiccup on embarkation day, when my luggage didn't make it from the hotel to the ship. This may have been in part because I had done my own hotel booking and didn't let Scenic do it. (I got a cheaper and I think a lot nicer room than my fellow Scenic guests.) I was on their shuttle, but I received no instructions for the transfer of my luggage, and the hotel clerk apparently didn't understand the process. My cases were finally tracked down by Scenic many hours later, for which I was very grateful. Other than that, embarkation and disembarkation processes were excellent, and all exits and entries on the ship during the cruise were most efficient due to our identity tags. Tip - take a lanyard to avoid having to clip the tag on. They ran out of lanyards on this cruise. The staff were always polite and friendly and couldn't do enough for you. My butler made sure I had my early morning coffee every day. When there was a moth infestation through my open window one evening, he was there in a flash to help me get them out of my cabin. One thing I noticed this time was that the butlers were also on the serving staff in the dining room, which had not noticed on my first cruise. Staff cutbacks? Read Less

A bucket list trip that may be the only time we do this ... wanted to ‘see it all’! We joined the ship in Amsterdam. We were met at the airport by Viking reps and quickly taken to the Viking Baldur at the port. Great assistance with luggage at the airport - getting luggage onto the ship was a bit sketchy - minimal assistance. Departed on time. The Included shore excursions throughout were excellent. Most required a significant amount of walking, but hills and obstructions were minimal. Guides were English speaking throughout and excellent. Special cities - Nuremberg where we took a special tour of WWII sites; Vienna; Budapest; and Prague. Staff.on board was exceptional - friendly, helpful, courteous, willing to do whatever to meet our wants and needs. Food - too much, too often, too good. The food choices were great and regional tastings were excellent. The cabin was small, but well laid out and everything worked well. The veranda was a plus on many occasions - we enjoyed it night and day. Great sleeping environment. All of the Viking plans and itinerary worked without a flaw. We used Viking free air and were pleased with this option. We did not have to change ships owing to high or low water. All connections were on time. The trip was not ‘cheap’ in any regard but it exceeded our expectations. We would do it again ... and recommend it strongly. Read Less

We just felt processed the whole time. Very little done to make the experience on board fun or special. There was basically no entertainment except a single pianist who occasionally acted as a sort of DJ for those wanting to dance. Choice of only one lounge with a bar after dinner or your cabin, that was it. We got one guest singer who was really bad and a single rock 'n roll singer for one hour. Most guests went straight to bed after dinner as there were no other options or other things to do - No effort made to facilitate meeting and mingling of guests. Food was mediocre and again, courses rushed and guests processed as quickly as possible. Our impression was that the ship was run to accomodate the staff more than the guests. The cruise director should really get another job if he really finds this one so uninspiring and tedious as it appeared that he did. Tours were mostly boring lectures by ageing ex teachers or academics. Some young tour guides but not enough. No E bikes !! only a few push bikes with very uncomfortable seats. Worst coffee from self serve machines. No pool and gym not worth visiting. Basically this cruise line seems to cater for geriatrics - average age of passengers was about 80, but even 80 yr olds like to have some fun when on holiday so more needs to be done to make the hours on board more varied and fun. Overall : very average and uninspiring experience. Upside : Nice cabin with best bed I have ever slept on. Sliding doors open up for fresh air and views of passing scenery. Great shower. Read Less

Friends that we had cruised with before invited us to go on the Grand European Cruise with them. There were 3 couples in our group. We had only cruised on the larger cruise ships before and thoroughly enjoyed the smaller ship with less people. The cabins were very well planned with lots of drawers, shelves and hanging space. The beds were very comfortable and I enjoyed a great night's sleep every night! The included excursions were great. We did choose to add 4 optional excursions and were also very pleased with them. With such a variety of excursions, there was definitely something for everyone. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and we only had one tour guide that wasn't the best. Didn't seem to be very enthusiastic about the tour. The food was very delicious, and there were always so many choices. I liked trying the regional dishes, but also having the static menu in case I wasn't feeling so adventurous. This 17-day trip centered on a 7 day AmaWaterways "Melodies of the Danube" River cruise from Budapest to Prague on the AmaLea ship. This was our second AmaWaterways cruise in Europe the first being a Douro River cruise in Portugal. We added both the 2 day Budapest and the 3 day Prague extension to the river cruise through AMA and thenadded one additional day in each city using cash an Marriott points. Although the capacity for this tour was 156, there were only 111passengers aboard mostly from North America. The hotels for the land portion in Budapest (Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge) and in Prague (Marriott) were excellently located and first class inevery other respect. In summary, AMA did an superb job providing a comfortable environment on the ship, keeping us well fed, showing us interesting things and beautiful scenery along the way, and giving us a good value for our money. The AmaLea was new in 2018 and gleamed in every respect. Our cabin, (C211) was compact but well designed. The queen bed was flanked by nightstands on either side. There were two small easy chairs and a round table in the alcove near the french balcony. There was a desk with drawer storage at the foot of the bed. A slider opened to the balcony that held two patio type chairs between a square table. It was comfortable to sit on the balcony and watch the scenery along the river as we sailed down the Danube. The closet held terry bathrobes, hangers for our clothes, and a combination safe. The food was notable for its creative preparation and flavor. The dining room was always set with cloth tablecloths and the wait staff was always friendly and super efficient. Read Less

We had the perfect view of Parliament in Budapest when we entered our room and the view at night was spectacular! Enjoyed meeting and spending time with like minded passengers who appreciate high quality and service. We enjoyed taking the bikes on our own in Vienna so having some free time was appreciated. We were pleasantly surprised to find we could board ship early and have lunch before embarkation so we didn’t have to walk around Budapest with our luggage. Jewish Heritage Cruise was way above our expectations. Two excursions included everyday. Way more than was advertised. Lecturers/Speakers on board were excellent. Chef and Cruise Director modified things to meet the special topic cruisers. Incredible state room opened Completely so we cruised in bed with the room open to river sounds and smells. Great food beautifully presented. Class A hotels at both Budapest and Prague with perfect locations and excellent views. Very high level buses for tours. Almost all guides had excellent English. Broke groups into small like 20 people so big buses half empty. Whole ship only about 120 people. Great sound speaker system on all tours. A few optional tours were good and not high priced. Wait staff very friendly and efficient. In trying to find something negative to say: Marketing materials said there would be nightly 10:30 food that didn’t happen. Also, tea time was almost always taken down before tours returned to ship. Bar wait staff was not really interested in selling drinks - didn’t work the room during happy hour or during lectures, didn’t know what liquor they had, etc. Marketing materials and even signs on ship said they had a beauty salon but crew said that was closed years ago. None of the negatives hurt the trip which was fantastic and we are veterans of 20+ cruises. Read Less

We went to a few different presentations from various cruise lines when we looking to book a river cruise. We chose Scenic as it seemed to offer the kind of experience we were looking for. When they said it was “all included” - it was all included - from the fabulous excursions just for the guests on our ship, to on-ship entertainment, all the delicious meals (buffet for breakfast and lunch) and if you did not like what was being offered - you could order a la carte but who would want to with all the selection you had), and the supper meal was a la carte - served with local wines and beers, all the beverages, the service, the cleanliness, friendly staff willing to support your request and then the lovely people we met on board - so top notch!!! We would not change a thing - everything, everything went off without a hitch. We had several options to choose from each day and then also had the ability to do our own thing - with our “tailor made” devices - as your GPS as well as sharing information on all the points of interest at that particular location. The ability to use the electric bikes on board was super awesome - it was great. Our tour guides impressed us with their knowledge and charisma - we learned so much. The whole experience was impressively run with things so well organized - thank you to Darinka (our impressive tour organizer - kind of a “wedding planner” on our ship) who made sure that the excursions were organized for the number of participants from our ship, we had plenty of tour guides, those that required special arrangements were well looked after. Everyone looked after us to ensure that our experience was a memorable one and that we would want for nothing. We even had a butler assigned to us if we wanted any meals in our room or needed something special. It was so unexpected and so very much appreciated, chocolates on our pillow, fridges stocked, snacks in our room and the room was always impressively clean. Each day we were impressed by what we experienced and each day we were more impressed. From the private concert at Salzburg - Sound of Music, to our private concert in a palace to our tour of a castle and our amazing meal and entertainment - and everything else in between - really a trip of a lifetime - we would do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you Scenic and all your staff for a trip of a lifetime and making our 40th anniversary memorable!!!! Read Less

This was our first time to Europe. It was truly amazing. I never had an idea on how old some of the sites were and the history of the area. Prague was our first stop and was an amazing city. We went on the walking tour and learned so much from the history of Prague. We boarded the ship in Nuremberg and was greeted by a very friendly crew and easy cabin assignment. What was so nice was the size of the cruise. There were only a little over 100 passengers. We made some new friends and had a great time getting to know a lot of the people on the cruise. The transportation on all of the excursions was top of the line. The busses were very comfortable and was very easy to see all of the sites. The service at the meals was outstanding and the servers very friendly. The food was very good and we came away not too stuffed and still able to walk. The only unfortunate thing was that we lost one of the engines on the ship and had to be bussed to the next stop in Budapest. But Avalon put us up in a first class hotel. We also were able to get to see a lot of the amazing sites in Budapest. We would definitely go again, this time I think we would do the Rhine. On Avalon of course. Thanks for the great time and all of the amazing sites we visited. Read Less

I think we all would agree that we were very fortunate to have an awesome cruise director, Danielle. But it doesn’t stop there, from housekeeping to dining room staff to bartenders I mean everyone was great. The ship is in tiptop shape and the rooms are roomy enough with fantastic views. As we did cruise three different rivers we had an opportunity to see other cruise lines along the way and personally we are super glad that we chose Avalon not only from the ships appearance but also from the number of people on board seemed to be less than others. Onboard entertainment was varied and our cruise director did a great job of bringing in special guest. The on shore excursions were mostly good sometimes tour guides would spend a little bit too much time with history but that is to be expected. Oh and did I mention the castles! Read Less
