This was a wonderful experience with all things given priority. Great excursions ,food, staff were at the forefront with meticulous attention to details!! Thank you to Monika, our director, for planning and ensuring that everything went smoothly!! The excursions were for every ability with many choices. The guides were knowledgeable and fun giving a lot of historical details and explaining any questions asked. The food was delicious and also many choices were given at each meal. The staff was attentive and oh so accommodating! I had a great massage and and was able to sneak in a couple of glorious naps!! The ship was always clean and I loved having my bed turned down each night with chocolate left on my pillow. The snacks left in the lounge each day was wonderful. So there was always a snack for those of us who get peckish. I have already planned for next years tour!! Thank you AMA!!!!! Read Less

I have been travelling for over 25 years on ocean cruises, so I carefully selected AMA, it was the best experience I have ever had. The crew on this ship from the Captain down are the very best you could find 5 star every cruise member , the food is fantastic, the service is perfect, the cabins are beautiful when every crew member makes you feel special to them, you have a first class experience. AMA uses locally sourced wines unlike some other river cruiselines, so it is a more memorable experience to savour the lical offerings. We were very fortuneate to be able to take part in a Bridge tour, conducted by Adrian, very interesting how the ship addresses the locks and us managed from the bridge. The cabin layouts are really good, we had a French Balcony and an outside balcony. You have happy hour before dinner and wine and beer with lunch and dinner and sparkling wine with breakfast, what more could you want ! Read Less

A friend chose this cruise based on the ports. I could not have been happier with the ship, tours, food, and service. Everything was well taken care of. The food never felt mass produced as it often does on a big ship. It felt like each meal was made specially for me. Our waiters (Agus and Constantine) and bartender (Carmen) made us feel like we were their only guests. There were 6 in my group - they asked our names, remembered, & we were each greeted by name all week. They remembered food & drink preferences also of course making us feel cared for. Our cruise manager (Talida) made sure that all odds & ends were taken care of seemingly all across the ship & land with no seemingly no time when she might sleep! It worked wonderfully to stop at ports right on towns where we could just walk on & off the ship without worrying about buses etc.. Excursions were well planned & we had no wait time - it left when they said it would leave. No lining up, no waiting around to be called. It was all just right. I would definitely go again on a similar cruise & choose AmaWaterways. Read Less

Having never been on a river cruise, we relied on our travel agent's judgment to select both a company and an itinerary. She chose AmaWaterways "Melodies of the Danube" and we are glad she did. The company is a first class organization. The ship is newer, clean, beautifully appointed and has all the bells and whistles to make a 7 day cruise just perfect. The staff were always professional, polite, caring and interested in making every detail to our satisfaction. The common areas were comfortable. We noticed people enjoying the pool. Our favorite spot was under the tent on the upper deck where we spent hours enjoying the ever changing shore line. Food and cruising go hand and and the chef did not disappoint. While food was served throughout the day, it was never about quantity as is the case on most ships, it was quality that ruled here. Excellent fresh salads, an ever changing menu and the nightly chef's recommendations made every meal special. There were multiple dining options for each meal. Daily we were offered a light breakfast for the early and late risers and a full breakfast with omelet station. Lunch was always different. The dinners were top notch with offerings from salmon to beef. As to dressing for meals - most people dressed a bit nicer in the evening, however, not one man wore a jacket to dinner, favoring instead collar shirts or sweaters. Women wore slacks and tops and minimal jewelry. People looked nice, but certainly not dressed up. The Cruise Manager, Mariana, was in complete control of the options for shore excursions and special activities. She was excellent at her job! She held daily briefings to inform everyone of upcoming opportunities and was as flexible as possible when people wanted to make last minute changes to hikes and tours. Did I mention the ship has a small fleet of bicycles available right onboard?! This was our first river cruise. It won't be our last. And, for sure our next cruise with again be with AmaWaterways. We have been a lot of places, and on several cruises, but this was our first river cruise. AMA does it right! We were on the AMASerena for Melodies of the Danube. It was a wonderful experience, and all 3 of us hated for it to end. The food was out of this world - the best we have ever had, and the service was great. The rooms are a little small, of course, which we knew, and the wifi was terrible for some reason, but the overall experience was fantastic. We took a few excursions, which were all well organized, but often went off on our own. When we wanted to go on our own, the cruise director Szaba could not have been more helpful in telling us how to do what we planned, such as taking the train to Salzburg for the day from Linz. One of the best experiences was the Illuminations cruise around Budapest. We can't wait to do another AMA cruise! Even though we had been there for 2 days before the cruise and had been on an illuminations drive with our guide, this was special. I know Viking has the market on these cruises, but AMA was definitely a step above them from what e observed in seeing the other ships. They take such good care of their guests - can't do enough for you. We had a balcony, because I thought we wanted it, but we would probably opt for the French balcony next time to have a little more room in the cabin. Getting out of bed requires standing sideways because there is just no room. The small cabin wasn't bad except when we were packing, when we were just in each other's way. It may be worth getting the slightly larger cabin too. There is a happy hour every night, which was a nice touch. We enjoyed piano player Peter, who tolerated us wanting to sign karaoke at night with our new friends from Panama. While most of the passengers went to bed fairly early, we closed the lounge every night with Peter, singing and dancing. We had a blast! Read Less

Unbelievable staff with impeccable service and attention to detail from beginning to end. Could not have been better. All tour guides were local and very knowledgeable about their history. Dining was superb with great food choices and local wines. Everything was smooth and easy. Excursions were available for all levels of persons, from gentle walkers to hikers. Bikes were 7 speed cruisers and well maintained. So many choices of activities and free time, too. Entertainment was from locals and was very professional. Cruise manager was available to handle any questions and very personable. Safety was of utmost consern. I highly recommend AMA. We had 34 persons traveling and everyone was overwhelmed with this cruise. AMA met us at the airport and took care of us until we left for home after disembarking. Our cruise included a cocktail party before dinner each evening with free cocktails, as well as the usual beer and wine. Wine and beer were free at all meals. AM provided umbrellas when needed, walking sticks, and fold down cane for those that wanted them. We had a aim up bar with heated pool. Every day was explained in detail. If you chose to change or eliminate an excursion, it was allowed at any time. All excursions were included in the price. If you need laundry washed, you left it in a bag on your bed and it was returned clean and folded within 24 hours and pricing was very reasonable. My group is already planning our next cruise with AMA!! Read Less

We chose this cruise line on recommendation of our Travel Agent, did research and selected the Serena based on good reviews. We are so glad we did. The ship is beautiful, meals fantastic, well prepared and served by a wonderful waitstaff. John the tour guide/leader was very good and attentive. The entertainment offered on board dovetailed with the location we were in (string trio in Vienna, "Oktoberfest" in Germany). Wines served at lunch and dinner were regional as were food selections. The tour guides in each city or town were excellent. A special highlight for us was Alex in Passau Germany. He was originally from Hong Kong, parents moved to Germany to open a Chinese restaurant and his love of his home was infectious! The guides were all very knowledgeable and personable. We learned a lot! Also the various options every day were fantastic, hikes, walks, specialty food tours and always free time to shop and explore. A notable excursion is the all day to Salzburg. We highly recommend. It is a lovely town and worth the 2 hour bus ride!! Seeing places where the Sound of Music was filmed was a special treat. All in all we have nothing but good things to highlight. We highly recommend Melodies of the Danube aboard the Serena!! Read Less

Our third river cruise on Ama and all three have been really pleasant experiences. The first two were the Rhine and Seine; this time it was the Danube, a beautiful river indeed. We enjoyed stops in Brasislava, Vienna, the picture postcard Durnstein, beautiful Regensburg, and a full day of touring in Nuremberg. The staff is always professional, the food was very good with much to select from, and the excursions were well organized. Ama is an excellent company and delivers, in our experience so far, a consistently excellent product. That said, those who have not taken a river cruise will want to note that there are limited onboard activities, entertainment, and dining options. On this cruise, the onborad pianist serves as the DY, for example. They generally bring entertainers onboard a couple of nights during the week. The upside, however, is that you get a peaceful, hassle free experiences without the crowds found on traditional cruise ships. Read Less

We had a perfect family trip with AMA Waterways on the AMA Certo. We traveled with my 3 teenage daughters ages 18,16 and 15. Two of the girls shared cabin 109, my oldest had cabin 111 to herself (both category D) and my husband and I treated ourselves to a cabin with a French balcony 226, category C. The cabins are lovely, well decorated and with room to store all your necessities. The bathrooms are small but make efficient use of the space and have luxurious touches, like a rain shower and beautiful tile work. River cruising does attract an older clientele, however there was another family with younger children on our trip. I DO recommend this company and this trip for families. The ship had plenty of bikes, excursions for the more active crowd and a lovely pool. There was a small evening activity every night, but we only participated one or two nights as we were generally exhausted and fell asleep quickly. My family loved the dining experience. They treated us like royalty, always asked “where are the girls ?” if we arrived without them. The food choices were all excellent. Portions sizes were perfect for having a little bit of everything. We did not go hungry and my 15 year old said that she gained 4 pounds on board. Our trip was interrupted by an accident on the river (a barge got stuck in low water), which had river traffic backed up for miles. We only made it a little beyond Passau, Germany instead of our final destination of Nuremberg; so we had to take long bus rides to experience 2 days of excursions which wasn’t the best, but no fault of the AMA. The first stop was Bratislava, a beautiful town, where we hiked to the castle and then explored a local fair and locally made ice cream. Vienna was lovely, but we took the optional Schonbrunn Palace tour in the afternoon so we had to rush back to the ship and didn’t have a lot of time in Vienna. The girls loved Durnstein. We took the Apricots and Sweets tasking excursion which was lovely and then took a leisurely stroll back to the ship. Then my husband and I biked through the Wachau Valley while the girls sat in the sun on the boat. It was our favorite day. We also did the optional excursion to Salzburg. We thought Salzburg was beautiful but actually liked Regensburg (the next day’s excursion where we did another tastings tour) better. The tour of Nuremberg was an issue because of the river back up. To experience the tour you had to take a 3 hour bus ride (only because the boat never made it all the way to Nuremberg). My husband and 2 of my daughters went and enjoyed it, but mostly because some of the crew treated them to some entertainment after the tour. The crew was wonderful, the food was great. It’s an awesome way to see some parts of Europe. Plan on being flexible, the company has no control over weather or the river or other boat traffic. This was our first European river cruise, after having been on more than a dozen ocean cruises (predominantly HAL, some Royal Caribbean, and a Seabourn). We sailed Budapest to Vilshoven and were absolutely delighted with the service, atmosphere, food and wine. We opted for a cabin in the lowest deck, which was "cozy," but totally fine for our needs. Possible drawbacks: closer to the water line, only a porthole for window, and occasional vibration from the engines, and lack of elevator access. That all said, none of those were issues for us and we would seriously consider staying on that level again, for the cost savings. We found the food to be excellent - always plenty of options and all were well-prepared. Dinner in the "Chef's Table" dining room (no additional charge) was especially elegant. We appreciated that they accommodated diners who needed gluten free (GF) meals and that their menus and food signage were labeled with allergens. We were part of a group that was GF and the crew provided a "GF corner" of snacks in the lounge every day, as well as a section at breakfast and dinner - AND a dedicated toaster (hurrah!). I believe that this may have been a special accommodation for our group; a very classy touch. The wine pours at lunch and dinner were VERY generous and we were pleased with the quality of all the wines that were served. The excursions and guides were all very good; in some locations, there were options for more than one excursion in a day. Options were provided for different levels of fitness/mobility. The entertainment that was provided was great, although we missed some of the after-dinner shows in the lounge, opting to rest, instead. Unlike ocean cruising, there are no "sea days" that enable you to rest/recover from a busy day of sightseeing. The embarkation process was NOTHING compared with ocean cruise embarkation. We purposely went a little later, to avoid a long wait for embarkation. We were shocked when we arrived at the ship and there was absolutely no line. I think it might have taken a total of five minutes to check in. Disembarkation was also very smooth. The cruise director, Talida, was outstanding. Always cheerful and ready to assist, incredibly well-organized and willing to go the extra mile. We stayed in Budapest for a few nights prior to the cruise and went on to Prague after the cruise; we were independent travelers in both cities. It was nice to be able to travel to Prague with the ship's post-cruise excursion group. Although it was more expensive to do a river cruise (vs ocean cruise), it was so relaxing to know that so many amenities were included: wine/beer/sodas with lunch/dinner, Internet service (always a good connection in our cabin), almost all excursions, etc. We so enjoyed this experience, that we put down a deposit for a future sailing, which we'd NEVER done on any of our (many) ocean cruises. So we look forward to sailing with Ama again! Read Less

The entire crew was excellent -- efficient, helpful, and attentive to all needs. The Captain's Table tasting dinner was also excellent and beautifully presented. The food in general was great. But the overall plan of the trip and its cost was the issue. In each city, we had a local guide, and they varied wildly in quality from excellent to worthless. The trip was short and expensive for the time it covered, esp. when airfare was not included, and so I always felt rushed at most of the stops and without a good feel for the people and places. This was very much a trip that felt like "If this is Tuesday, this must be Vienna." I would recommend the Budapest to Prague trip to friends as the cities and countryside are beautiful and full of history. But I used AMA for reasons involving travel companions; I've been much more satisfied with two Grand Circle cruises I've gone on and will always use them from now on. Read Less

The crew onboard were amazing as well. I have nothing but positive feedback about their service, helpfulness, knowledge and experience. They are pros! We decided to try a river cruise and selected this one because of the route (Budapest to Vilshofen/Munich) and good feedback we had heard about AMA Waterways. We were not disappointed! The crew and boat were fantastic. It offered a variety of shore excursions, including cycling, hiking and some special vineyard tours as it was a wine cruise. Clam Castle for example, was incredibly special, with a wine tasting and tour by the Count. The Viennese Wine tavern was great fun. And the simple walking tours in each place were all done by knowledgeable and interesting guides. The food on the boat was great, lots of it, good variety and choices and fantastic service. The wine and beer also really good. The ages of the guests was broader than expected, with some families with kids, lots of extended families and couples and friends in their 40s to 60s. Of all that, the thing that really made the trip was the crew. From our fantastic captain, to Rachel our incredibly funny and kind Cruise Manager, Zoran our wonderful security manager, to restaurant staff, and housekeeping staff, everyone was friendly, helpful, loved what they do, and really wanted to ensure that all guests had a great time. We chose this particular itinerary as a "Bucket List"/ retirement trip. We did a pre-cruise extension in Vienna and a post-cruise extension in Romania. Our cruise manager, Christian Abker, made sure every detail was taken care of perfectly. Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. The crew and staff were very professional, attentive and engaging. Our cabin was spacious, bright and very clean. The bathroom was also very clean and spacious. The food was generally excellent and our meal in the "The Chef's Table" was perfection! We met so many lovely fellow cruisers from around the USA and several other countries. There was a large group of hearing impaired people on this cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to know many of them. We had several evenings of entertainment by local dancers/singers that added a wonderful authentic dimension to the trip. A good variety of on-shore excursions (although sometimes felt rushed). My favorite was the Bulgarian pastry and yogurt making excursion in a local family's home. We will definitely cruise with AmaWaterways again. Read Less

Superb dining - lots of choice, some of the best meals I've had in any restaurant, including the best local wines. Three places to dine - lounge for casual, quick meals, the restaurant for full service and the Chef's table for more intimate dining. Drinks are free at lunch and dinner, and quite reasonable other times. Climate on board is friendly and relaxed. Every guest is made to feel so special. Real pampering with such thoughtful touches (cool Spritzers and towels upon return from a hot day trip/small gifts like roses and scsrves/ice cream up top by the pool!) The staff are very professional, yet so friendly. They seem to really enjoy working on the ship. The climate on board is so wonderful. Make the end of the voyage so hard. I could have definitely spent another week. We had so much fun and amazing experiences together. Great - local and special - onboard entertainment. Not run of the mill at all. Just the right size ship. Small enough that you get to know many of the other guests if you like, but big enough that you have different conversation partners each day. Tours were also smaller, so they seemed more special and personalized. Well worth the expense. Read Less

We were welcomed to our cabin with a bottle of wine and chocolates. The food was plentiful with a buffet for both breakfast and lunch and at least a 4 course dinner to choose from every night. Wine and beer with lunch and dinner was complimentary and poured freely. We had a great waitress named Nicci that took very good care of us. The entertainment on board was enjoyable from the Hungarian musicians and dancers to the trio playing classical music and very in tune with where we were on the cruise. The guides provided for the shore excursions were all very knowledgeable and we learned so much about the history of each area visited. This was my first river cruise, and my husband and I were very impressed. From the excellent service on board to the delicious gourmet meals and multiple shore excursion choices, we felt pampered and relaxed. The ship itself, Ama Serena, is clean and beautifully equipped. There was always something to do, on-board or off. There were interesting talks on the history of the local cities/countries and their wines, lounging poolside, listening to live music, or exploring the cities and shops on shore. Maddy, our tour guide was excellent with her knowledge and advice in planning shore excursions. Dining, particularly the dinners, were fun and excellent. Every detail was attended to, and we weren't ready to leave the ship after the week was over! We would definitely recommend AmaWaterways and would cruise again with them on another trip in the future. Our one complaint would be something many others found frustrating as well, and I'm not sure in this day and age with all the boat traffic on the river that this will improve or change any time soon. Be aware that in some ports and depending on what side your cabin is located, you will dock right next to another ship and you will look directly into the cabins of the neighbor boat. You may not be able to enjoy the views from your window/balcony and will want to keep your drapes drawn. When you disembark to go ashore, you will need to walk through the neighbor ship to get on land. This was particularly obnoxious when a neighboring ship (not AmaWaterways) had their laundry hung up all over their balconies (this only happened one time). I still would recommend getting a balcony room, however, because it is so beautiful to sit outside and watch the countryside go by, and even to experience the locks from your balcony. I really enjoyed going through the locks (we went through 12 of them!), especially at night--it was kind of spooky, but fun to experience. Read Less

We asked our travel agent for a Danube cruise. She suggested AMA Waterways vs Viking. saying that since Viking started ocean cruising they have moved some of their best people away from the river boats and AMA Waterways gives better service. We had previously taken a Viking Ocean cruise of the Western Med and were very pleased. We flew from Jacksonville, FL to Atlanta and then to Amsterdam using Delta Priority status and found that we did indeed have more seat room. Regardless that 8 hour flight was tiresome. Arriving in Budapest we were met by an AMA driver who brought us to the Sofitel Chain Bridge Hotel where we had a lovely room and perfect service. We walked around the area and ate that evening at the Four Seasons Hotel which is located nearby in a gorgeous old castle. The next day we transferred to the AMAViola, a beautiful ship with the most hospitable staff and a comfortable room with a balcony. Later that day we had a guided tour of Budapest. Evening cruise for Budapest lights From then on each day was at a different city where there were morning guided tours with 3 choices: Active-which meant hiking or biking, Regular- generally a bus to the center of the historic district and then a guided walking tour or Gentle- usually a bus tour with less walking. Afternoons often had second included tours or optional events such as a classical concert in Vienna. Every cities was wonderful, filled with history and beautiful architecture. The guides were marvelous, they actually are schooled as guides for a minimum of 2 years. The regular walking tours were not strenuous but we easily fulfilled our daily 10,000 steps per day. Almost everyone we met understood English as most of these Eastern European countries require English education as early as 3rd grade. Although almost all tourist places accepted Euros you got change in the local currency. Be sure to carry sufficient Euros to tip the guides and drivers. All meals were on the ship and couldn't have been better. There were many meal choices, open seating, and tended to always include local and regional dishes. After the cruise we extended two Prague where the AMA tour manager accompanied us and was constantly available to lead us to both organized tours and free time activities from the Hilton Downtown hotel in the heart of the city. Suggestion: Dining at both The Portfolio restaurant and the White Horse restaurant were great experiences. Both had seating underground in old (like fro 1200AD) basements decorated in absolutely the finest taste. Food Was excellent, perhaps the best I ever had. Unfortunately, the water level in the Danube was very low. The AMAviola had a small draft but the other river ships, including Viking weren’t able to sail and had to tie up and bus their passengers. These folks were pretty upset. Weather was very hot, high 80s to low 90’s. Read Less

We all agreed that the river cruise was much better than any of the ocean cruises we had taken. We plan to take another river cruise. We were greeted warmly and our bags were retrieved from the taxi for us. Embarkation was very smooth. Our cabin was nicely appointed (we stayed in an AA cabin on the uppermost cabin deck) and our cabin steward kept us well stocked with bottled water. The bed was super comfy. The bathroom is decently large for a cruise ship and has a full size shower. Due to the size of the ship, 83 cabins, you will get to know most of the staff and passengers. There is only one dining room (open seating) but lighter fare is served in the lounge most of the day. The food was excellent, usually four course meals, along with a good selection of wines. Breakfast was either the well stocked buffet or menu items. All meals had some local tie-in. The boat is very stable, even when small speed boats passed while we were docked. The sun deck was a pleasant place to hang out and watch the passing scenery (we were on the Danube river). The staff were very pleasant and always able to assist. Only one crew member was rude, the Captain. But everyone else was superb so he was easily ignored. The vessel is not handicapped accessible (this is mentioned on the website). Also, this is not a cruise for children as there are no activities specific for them. Most of the passengers ages ranged between 40 and 70. The live musician was a joy, taking requests and keeping us dancing. I missed the string quartet but heard from other passengers that they were excellent. There are no broadway reviews nor is there a casino but those are not the entertainment draw for me so were not missed. The daily excursions are included in the fare with only a few exceptions. They offer city walking tours, hiking tours, and bicycle tours. I took all three types. Walking tours are separated into gentle walkers and active walkers and are led by local guides. My only complaint is that the gentle walkers should not take the active tours or hiking tours, but this is a passenger issue, not a cruise issue. The bicycles are also available if you want to go for a ride on your own (take the paved trail along the north bank of the Danube in Vilshofen, go west for the planetary displays). When needed, motor coaches were provided to get to towns further than walking distance. The coaches were first class. Disembarkation was easy. We took the post-cruise extension (Prague) so the transportation was provided (motor coach). Our Prague hotel was excellent and situated a block from old town. A note about our particular sailing: the Danube river had very low water levels due to the lack of rain in the area. Our captain decided to sail directly to Vienna (water levels were expected to be a little better west of Vienna) after we all boarded. Most of the other river cruise boats stayed in Budapest. We had a few short stops along the way to drop off and pick up passengers who were driven (motor coach) back to Budapest and Bratislava for tours. The itinerary change gave us an extra day in Vienna which was fine by my group. Much better to have sailed than to stay docked all week in Budapest. The remainder of the cruise was as initially scheduled. The cruise director did an excellent job with the changed schedule. Overall an excellent experience. I would definitely recommend AmaWaterways and plan to take another cruise with them. note: I did not use the fitness room so cannot rate it. I walked, hiked, and biked to work off the wine. :-) Read Less

Our Amex travel agent suggested AMA Waterways as the very best onboard service she had experienced among several major river cruise lines, and we went with her recommendation. She was not off base at all. The onboard experience on AMA is second to none. All staff and crew were attentive, extremely helpful, and clearly focused on making our onboard experience special. The Tour Manager, Peter Whitehead, was the star of the show. Peter amazed me with his ability to recall details of his passengers and their itineraries, and to ensure that everything onboard was wonderful. Even when telling the passengers at daily briefings things we might not have wanted to hear, Peter was great--tactful, funny, but very direct and clear. Food onboard was very good, especially the once a voyage tasting dinner at the Chef's Table restaurant which was a very special evening open to all passengers once during the cruise. The dining experience in the main dining room was also very good, with a variety of offerings every meal, attentive and friendly service, and complimentary unlimited beer/wine at lunch and dinner. While alcohol was extra outside of those times, every day had a happy hour with free cocktails available. Overall, this was a superb onboard experience. Where the trip fell apart was on land where AMA appears constrained to use local guides of varying levels of skill at managing large groups of people, varying fluency in English, and varying levels of knowledge/interest/sensitivity to the needs of the group members they were guiding. On two occasions guides lost group members (fortunately, Peter Whitehead recovered everyone!), once in Prague where a group of 25 people was simply too large for one guide to manage while navigating the immense crowds on the Charles Bridge and Old Town, even with the QuietVoice headsets we were issued on almost every tour. On only one of the tours in Austria and Germany did the guide address the historical elephant in the room--Nazi Germany and Hitler. This was in Linz where it was probably pretty hard to avoid Hitler as he was born just outside the city and was welcomed into Austria there by cheering crowds in the main square after Germany annexed Austria just prior to WW II. Not sure what AMA can do about the guide issue, but if there is anything they can do (perhaps only hiring local guides who are fluent in English, skilled at managing large groups and knowledgeable, or when a large group format is necessary in a city like Prague, having two guides for each group--one to lead, one to collect stragglers!). The good news about tours was that physically every level of strength was covered. Those who were not able to walk fast were offered Gentle tours, which those hardy hikers among the passengers were led on strenuous hikes up castle promontories, etc.! Bikes and bike tours were also available at some ports. My partner and I felt that some of the stops on this voyage were superfluous. If you've been to Europe and ventured outside of the big cities, you've seen quaint medieval towns. They are all pretty much alike. This tour, however, stopped at three of them. We would have preferred more time in Vienna, where we only had really one day, Linz and Salzberg each only one day to just barely scratch the surface of fabulous histories and attractions! Overall, however, we had a very nice time and would highly recommend AMA Waterways. Read Less

This was our very first experience with a river cruise. We selected Ama based on recommendations both from our travel agent and friends. It was an excellent choice and there's really very little in the way of anything negative to say about the cruise or the cruise line. In terms of the positives, the ship was excellent. It was very well taken care of and well maintained by the crew. The cabins were very nicely appointed, and assuming you pick the right class of cabin, much more room than you might expect on such a small ship (more about that later). The food was just superb... very well done with lots of choice and really something available to eat virtually any time during the day if you're feeling a bit peckish. The specialty dining venue is called the Chef's Table and it truly is something special. You're entitled to eat there once during your cruise (no additional charge) and it's very much a "don't miss" affair. The crew was very attentive and willing to accommodate most any request with a smile. On the negative side, not having done a river cruise before, I think we chose not so well in terms of the cabin that we selected (French Balcony). It was certainly comfortable and quiet, however, the size was fairly restricted. The bed took up the majority of the space in the cabin and in fact trying to walk around the bed often required having to move the desk chair to a different location. If it's affordable, I would definitely recommend at least the next cabin class up where the cabin size and layout seems much more practical. Probably the highlight of the cruise was our cruise director, Peter Whitehead. Pete was a fountain of knowledge and had an wonderful sense of humor evident in his daily briefings and simply when chatting. He took the time to patiently answer all questions and go the extra mile to make sure that passengers got the most out of their excursions and time on the ship. Where Pete really shone in his role was when things went a little off the rails. I managed to fall down a flight of metal stairs and injured my hand and badly bruised a few other places (totally my fault, no issue at all with the ship or crew). Not only did the crew immediately jump on getting first aid, but Pete took ownership of arranging for a doctor's visit, and ultimately a visit to the hospital nearby in Melk for stitching and other "repairs." I can't thank him (and the crew) enough for their help and support. Bottom line, an excellent cruise and cruise line and highly recommended. Read Less

This was our first river cruise after many "big ship" cruises. It was a Danube cruise, with pre and post time in Budapest and Prague. AMA Waterways, which we had no knowledge of, had been recommended by our travel agent. We approached the trip with some trepidation, but this hesitation turned out to be unfounded. We can't say enough about AMA. The Sonata was beautiful, the food was great, and the staff was unbelievable. They were the best staff by far we have ever experienced on a cruise - headed by their cruise director Bojan Randjelovic. We took a Danube cruise from Budapest to Prague. The second day of pre-cruise in Budapest I fell in the shower at the hotel - at 7:30 at night - and suffered severe injuries. Bojan saw the ambulance come to our hotel, made inquires, found out it was an AMA guest, and from that point forward gave us assistance that made all the difference in the world. He rode in the ambulance with me and stayed with me for 5 hours, past mid-night, at two hospitals He also contacted an AMA guide who spoke Hungarian, she immediately left her home and came to the first hospital, and was invaluable at the two hospitals we visited (no one spoke English at the Hospitals). After another 5 hours, I finally got appropriate care. Were it not for Bojan, and the person he called to help us, my wife and I would have been totally helpless in a foreign country. Apart from this help, on the cruise ship and for the remainder of the trip, he was the nicest, friendliest, most informative and most helpful cruise director my wife and I have even seen in approximately 18 cruises. As I said, the cruise itself was great in all respects - especially the ship appointments, food and staff. Unfortunately, the water level was low, and we were not able to reach our final cruise destination of Nuremberg. AMA, and Bojan, did everything to give us alternate options of ports and places to visit by bus. Amazingly, after our trip was over, AMA gave everyone on the cruise a credit of 45% of their cruise fare towards a future cruise !!! This was unbelievably generous on their part. My wife and I immediately booked another AMA cruise for 2019, this one on the Rhine. We will be recommending AMA to all of our friends and family, and we will always remember that in our hour of need, Bojan was there for us. Read Less

An travel agent acquaintance made some suggestions when my sister and I decided we would like to try a river cruise and we are so grateful she suggested AMA. The service was wonderful and the cruise manage, Camille, was terrific. She was friendly and professional and personal. She supplied pertinent information at the exact time we needed it. The excursions were timely and informative and guides were excellent. The time at the excursion sites is relatively quick. If you really want to explore a city, you really don't have time to do so - you mostly get an overview, then move on. We did a bike tour along the Danube, as well as a hiking tour, but the rest were city tours, which are informative, but next time I might do something more specific to the area, such as a wine tasting, etc. The cruise was relaxing but never boring. You can be as active as you wish, or relax as necessary. The excursions were offered for easy walkers, regular walkers or active walkers, along with bike and hiking. Be sure to pack clothing to enjoy the deck. As you travel along the Danube (we sailed from Budapest to Vilshofen) the scenery got more and more beautiful as we sailed up the river. The food was delicious but not in excess like it can be on an ocean cruise. The only thing I would criticize would be the on board gym. It could have used a few free weights and an elliptical machine, but after a few days I didn't have the time or energy to use it anyway! Can't wait to cruise with AMA again! Read Less
