This was our second cruise with Viking; and, like the first (Prague to Paris 5 months earlier), the experience was wonderful. We appreciated and Viking's focus on the cultural and historical aspects of the places we visited, in both their shore excursions and their on-board programs. (Thank goodness no Vegas-like shows.) On this trip, we were able to really get to know the history of the area and understand what gave rise to the term "Balkanization". The in-home cooking lesson in Bulgaria and afternoon tea in Croatia gave us a chance to really connect with local folks. And our program director's slide show about growing up in Slovakia combined with other cruise presentations led us to a realization that, behind the "Iron Curtain", the quality of one's life varied with the "benevolence" of one's own local dictator - Romania pretty bad, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia pretty good. The food and the ship were both top-notch. But Viking's true strength is in the people it hires. On both our cruises, we had great cruise directors. But more than that, the entire on-board staffs were truly (not just overtly) friendly and helpful, almost to a fault. This is what leads us to recommend Viking without hesitation.
