We had never been on a cruise before and we were so fortunate to have hit a bullseye on our first try. We added a 3 day extension at the start of our trip to be able to explore Transylvania. It was fabulous. I would recommend folks sign up for EVERY shore excursion offered---they are so enriching! The veranda stateroom we had was great! There was more room than anticipated and we made use of the veranda daily! We had a slight problem the first day when there was a strange odor, but our stateroom attendant was vigilant and solved the problem right away. We found ALL staff on the ship to be most responsive and friendly! Cannot say enough about the service or the food. We certainly never went hungry and were able to sample all sorts of foods---enjoying both familiar and new. We also very much enjoyed meeting fellow cruisers. We already have a second cruise planned! We love Viking and this trip was no exception. We were previously on the Jarl for the Romantic Danube from Nuremberg to Budapest with extensions in Prague and Budapest. This trip was different in that it was more educational and less site seeing. The Passage to Eastern Europe on the Atla and the tours did site seeing, but we were also provided a more in depth view into how Communism, the Serbian-Croatian War (& Yugoslavia), affected Eastern Europe and how it still affects it today. Some of it is sobering, but I learned a lot! Countryside is beautiful! The only downside was that some of the ports were not on cities so you could not simply walk off the ship and browse around town. Some excursions were an hour+ away. The ship, as on our previous cruise, was nice and clean. The staff go out of their way to know you by name and your preferences for everything from how you like your room to what you prefer to drink with a meal. And, as for meals! Well, if you walk away hungry it is your fault. The staff always makes sure to take care of you. If you order something and want something different they are always accommodating. This is no different with the rest of the staff - everyone will do their best to accommodate you if you just ask. We are in our 40s and were concerned the first cruise that we would be outcasts. We should not have worried a bit! We have managed to make friends of all ages (40 & up, that is) onboard. We are already booked for another Viking trip, but next time it will be on one of their cruise ships. i can't wait! Read Less

We had wanted to try a European river cruise. We had lived in Europe for 3 years during the Cold War so we chose Eastern Europe to see 5 countries and 3 major cities where then behind the Iron Curtain. Highlights: Planning was easy Making travel plans allowed for routing and upgrade options We received all the information we needed to plan & back Reception and return support was individual or small groups for individual flights Viking obviously selects only the best personnel, trains them to high standards and compensates them well enough to retain them and sustains exceptional service. While they anticipate every need, if you have to ask for anything, the answer is "yes sir, of course, right away, how many would you like, was that satisfactory, is there anything else and so on. But they are not overly solicitous. I felt like the crew were friends, easy to talk with and interested in our impressions and questions. Selection of tours allowed us to see and learn so much more than being on our own and yet there was time on our own to wonder around or take short side trips. Facilities, food, and service inconstant exceptional. we have planned the next trip and evaluating the options for the one after that. Read Less

We chose this cruise because 11 friends were taking this cruise and we wanted to be with them. However, the ports that we visited beginning with Bucharest and ending with Budapest (we did extend our travels to include Prague) were fabulous. The ship, Atla was excellent and we enjoyed the activities on board and the food was excellent. The entertainment provided was outstanding and the food was excellent. Our cabin service was excellent and all service was the best. Viking does a wonderful job in providing for all needs from the time that we met the Viking group at the airport in Bucharest to the time that we departed home from our last stop in Prague. I cannot say enough about the shore excursions. All of the tour guides were outstanding. The bus ride that Viking provided for the trip from Budapest to Prague was very relaxing and our tour guide provide a lot of details that we would experience in Prague. If I had to rate the places that we visited, I would place Prague and Budapest at the top with Bucharest, Rouse, Vidin, Belgrade and Croatia not far behind. Read Less

It completed our cruising on the Danube, and provided an opportunity to visit Eastern European countries that had been behind the "iron curtain" in its day. We appreciated the glimpses into the different life-styles in each country. The best part of the cruise was our fellow passengers. Almost all were open to greeting one another and extending friendships. The crew was of course, fantastic. A wonderful example of crew humor was my husband remarking to a crew member that if he had a long straw he could more easily reach the wine bottle only to have the crew member return minutes later with a long straw made by connecting a number of shorter straws! The tours provided an opportunity to see for ourselves the progress being made in each country. We were appreciative of each country and all but overwhelmed by Budapest's clean streets, buildings, buses, streetcars and structures. It was terrific. Read Less

It was a beautiful cruise from Bucharest to Budapest on the Danube River. The ship was beautiful and the cabins and common areas were so well done. We really spent a lot of time in the lounge area during the day and for lunch -- did not go to the dining room for lunch at all...just breakfast and dinner. We only had one sea day -- Iron Gate -- the rest of the time we had offshore excursions and the cities we visited were great -- great guides also!! There were 13 of us travelling together -- and they made special arrangements for us in the dining room to be able to sit together...many anniversaries and birthdays in our group!! They decorated doors to our cabins and in the cabin -- decorations around the mirror...so thoughtful!! We were on the side of the ship that had a balcony and we enjoyed the time we could sit out there and enjoy the view. We really had great weather and that made all of our shore trips so much better -- took a jacket -- but hardly wore it!!! What a great crew and fun entertainment at night with local dancers and singers -- many of them young people!! Read Less

Viking River Cruise Eastern Europe was a great trip, beautiful countries and people. So many beautiful churches, castles and beautiful buildings. We started in the old world city of Bucharest for two days and explored the Palace of Parliaments and the pristine countryside. On to the Viking Alta, a beautiful longboat the was much better that we expected, the staff were wonderful and our Veranda Suite was very upscale. The trip up the Danube was a very enjoying experience as we took advantage of all of the shore excursions and really enjoyed each and every port. The archaticture was very unique in each location and each city provides us with beautiful churches to visit. The tour guides were all outstanding and gave us a good understanding of the history and current conditions in each location. This was our first river cruise and upon our return home we have begun planning for our next Viking River Cruise. Read Less

This was a great experience on The Viking Alta. Great crew and wonderful accommodations with many interesting visits along the Danube River. This is for sure to "old world Europe" do in part to the influence of communist occupation but all the strength go the people. We meet so many wonderful people along the way from the various tour guides, to the village people we meet along the way to all the passenger and crew we meet during our trip. The Alta was a beautiful and comfortable ship and our suite was very tastefully presented, and quite spacious. The entertainment was just right and the crew did a wonderful job keeping us busy. The ports were vey interesting and the tours were outstanding and very educational. The on board dining experience was very good and there was always a good selection at each meal. We would highly recommend Viking and the Eastern European Cruise to all. Read Less

This was our second Viking River Cruise, the first was Waterways of the Tsars from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Both cruises were excellent. The service from the cleaning staff, restaurant staff, tour director and local guides was superb. Our stateroom on the Atla was a Veranda Suite which was very nice because we had our own private sitting area in addition the the bedroom. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of our rooms on both of our Viking Cruises. The ships are small, holding less than 220 passengers. We liked this as it made for a much more relaxed atmosphere. Also because of the small numbers it was very easy to get on and off the ship and into the various sites that we visited. This cruise took us to Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary and the Czech Republic because we extended our cruise at the end to include Prague. We had excellent local guides in each port. All of these countries were at one time Communist and it was very interesting to hear, from a local, what it was like to live under Communism in each country. We loved both of our Viking Cruises and have booked the Grand European Tour for this Oct. Viking River Cruises is a class act and we would highly recommend them. Read Less
