This is our third Scenic Cruise both previous ones were in Asia and were outstanding in ALL RESPECTS. We were a little taken aback atvthe sizebof alm the ships on the Danube as ours and all others seemed to have over 150 passengers which to me was like a cruise line with 4000 plus passengers! Having said that the organisation of the cruise was outstanding and our every wish was accommodated! It was hard to understand why do few cruises go through to the Black Sea as the further north we went the demands of more and more tours became apparent and quality deteriorated! And we travelled in April! The staff in our ship were equivalent to the outstanding crew we had experienced in Myanmar and The Mekong! Our butler service by ATI and Stat made the journey so much more enjoyable and they are to be commended similarly the joviality of the senior butler Chris was appreciated by all! The Cruise Director was happy to meet our needs as because of a disability I cannot walk far and we had all our requests accommodated! The cruise on the Danube was relaxing and enjoyable the countries visited were historically interesting and we enjoyed the experience! I would not want to further up and suffer the issues of overwhelming Numbers! Each passenger has their own expectations we had ours met by the splendour of the Riger and countries the absolute attention to detail by our Bali butler ATI and the help of our support butler from Serbia Stat who was a source of great local information to us! Thank you staff we enjoyed The first night at The Marriot in Bucharest is best forgotten and the company should look for a better venue! Read Less

All aspects of the trip went smoothly, our ship was luxurious, cabin (lowest deck) was spacious and beds and shower etc were great. Service by cruise staff was of high quality... friendly and very attentive. The daily shore excursions were varied, tour guides were local and very knowledgeable, we learnt a lot about the history and local cultures. Food was good, wide selection. We only cruised between Bucharest and Budapest, so didn’t go all the way to Amsterdam. We would definitely travel with Emerald Waterways (Evergreen in Australia) again. Highlights included the tour of Viminacium, a very large Roman archeological site with interesting burial findings, and seeing the 1 million year old mammoth skeleton, completely preserved in situ was very interesting as well. The Puszta Horse farm in Hungary was also excellent, great skills of the Magyar horsemen were on show, and included horse cart ride to see the local grey cattle with their huge horns and the local sheep with their long spiraling horns. We had never been on a cruise before and we were so fortunate to have hit a bullseye on our first try. We added a 3 day extension at the start of our trip to be able to explore Transylvania. It was fabulous. I would recommend folks sign up for EVERY shore excursion offered---they are so enriching! The veranda stateroom we had was great! There was more room than anticipated and we made use of the veranda daily! We had a slight problem the first day when there was a strange odor, but our stateroom attendant was vigilant and solved the problem right away. We found ALL staff on the ship to be most responsive and friendly! Cannot say enough about the service or the food. We certainly never went hungry and were able to sample all sorts of foods---enjoying both familiar and new. We also very much enjoyed meeting fellow cruisers. We already have a second cruise planned! We were told Scenic was top of the range with excellent food. Not true. Food was poor to mediocre - dry chicken, leathery veal, limited fruit selection, uninspiring lunch buffets, watery wines. Also evening meals took 2 to 2.5 hours as everyone had to be served at the same pace. The crew were as helpful as they could be, given they had to serve 165 people with drinks and food simultaneously. Shore excursions were fine. Head office admin was very poor. Asked where tickets were and was told they'd been sent. Another set would be sent immediately. They never arrived. At least three different people seemed to be involved with each not knowing what the other had said. Eventually the tickets and cruise information arrived with a week to go. As for the air transfers, the cheapest economy tickets were bought by Scenic - think last row at the back of the plane next to galleys and lavatories. Read Less

Uniworld stresses that they will honor special diets and require the client to call before the cruise to state those needs. There was no such record, nor were my diet concerns addressed, although lip service was paid, for the first 2 weeks of the cruise. I walked out of several meals because there was nothing I could eat. Not until my husband vociferously complained did anything get served to me that I could eat (not rocket science--just low salt). Uniworld says no children on the cruises, yet the captain's 2-year-old was on the cruise, riding his trike over clients' feet and screeching and riding through all the public areas. I went on this cruise NOT to be with children--yet here I had to endure it. At a mighty cost. No client is allowed in the wheelhouse, for safety concerns. Yet the captain's child and his strewn toys were in the wheelhouse. Uniworld says no wheelchairs, yet one client had one, and when that client was on a tour, the other clients had to wait for and assist her. Not what I paid for. Again. Ninety percent of the passengers came down with acute bronchitis. Uniworld turned its head at this, refusing to acknowledge there was a problem. I was blamed for not wearing a scarf around my neck, as to the cause of my illness. Hygiene on the ship is unacceptable, forcing clients to share serving spoons, with no enforcement of hand sanitizing or wiping down of the arms of dining chairs, repeated use of the same plastic gloves as cleaners move from cabin to cabin, spreading germs, and candy in jars into which clients stick their hands. To top it off, Uniworld made us pay for a cab to/from a hospital to treat the bronchitis. Really? The daily handout on things to do/see in a particular stopping point are mere cuttings and pastings that someone has slapped together and have little relevance. Why mention shopping and nightlife when we are stopping in a town for 2 hours during the day and have no access to such areas? Why state that what follows in the printout are 10 restaurants to experience--and just 3 are listed. Does no one even read what is dispensed daily? This trip was an unforgivable waste of my money. Uniworld should be ashamed. Read Less

“Passage to Eastern Europe” was our 3rd cruise with Viking, after France and Rhine and with no doubts was the BEST one! The itinerary gave us the chance to explore a part of Europe with a fantastic rich history and enjoy some breath-taking landscapes during well organized tours with excellent and informative guides. Viking LIF is elegant and stylish like the other Viking long ships but what made special this trip was the excellent crew. Our cabin stewardess Anna manage for 7 days to keep our cabin sparkling and made us feel like home. Maybe the amenities or the available space in the cabin are not at the level of other companies (Viking is cutting corners since our last trip) but Anna kept everything under control being a charming presence and incredible efficient. From the very first day we realised that Viking is trying to save money in the restaurant too. The food didn’t have the same standards and the quality was clearly under what Viking offered in our last trip. But at the end of the day the excellent service in the restaurant with the professionalism of Bogdan and the grace of Elena made every meal special. We missed the presence of the concierge on board but fortunately the team from the reception manage to help us in organised some extras during our trip. Ankika was great always smiling and happy to help. Above all the biggest asset of Viking LIF was our Program Director Leonard. We travel a lot, both ocean and river cruises but we never had the chance to meet somebody so special like Leonard. His extraordinary, almost encyclopaedic, knowledge of history, traditions, legends, geography made every daily meeting and lecture a unique opportunity to learn about this part of the world. Leonard had a great sense of humour and the mixture between personal experience, anecdotes and facts gain every evening a full house for his daily presentations (maybe, as a suggestion, the presentation should be broadcast in the cabins too as was never enough space in the lounge when Leonard was talking). After 7 days we didn’t manage the find how Leonard was able to be everywhere in every moment to help, chat, explain or joke! And was not only our opinion but Leonard made this trip GREAT for everyone on board. He can work in any other cruise lines around the world and will be a pleasure to meet him again. Watch out Viking don’t lose him if you want us back! Read Less

We had serious limitations as to the dates and the amount of time for traveling this year; we have always been intrigued by some of the former communist countries with a great past and their way back to democracy. While we were told that this trip went to places that were not that interesting, we found that, on the contrary, they were very different from other places and enjoyable in their own way. The cruise might not be at par with some of our previous cruises that went to Praga, Budapest, Amsterdam, etc., but the ship made for it. Brand new, the cabins were bigger and more comfortable that all the others in Avalon and Viking. There were 2 dinners that were spectacular with 5 course meals; all the others were very good. Tours were interesting and the price unbeatable. Highly recommended. The only negative was the lack of entertainment at night. Even the hiring of local artist in the different ports or a good DJ would had made a difference Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise, but it CERTAINLY won't be our last! We've done several ocean cruises on different lines, but we hit the jackpot on our first river cruise. We sailed from Bucharest, Romania to Amsterdam with the most impressive crew we've ever encountered. When we told the waiter during our first meal that my wife has a shellfish allergy, he immediately brought over the Maitre d' who not only took my wife's order for that and subsequent meals, ensuring no entre she wanted contained something she shouldn't eat, but he typically served them as well. The Concierge was equally exceptional. When my laptop computer 'died' during the cruise, she took it into the next port of call and had it repaired while my wife and I were on a shore excursion. The entire crew was the epitome of outstanding customer service! Our cabin was always spotless, the food superb. Shore excursions were well thought out and masterfully executed. No detail was too small to be overlooked. An absolutely phenomenal experience! Read Less

Have traveled Europe 13 times over the last 15 years. I will never use Uniworld again. Very poor quality assurance program relative to customer satisfaction. Better hope you have no problems on your cruise, as Uniworld will not accommodate you. They are more interested in the revenue bottom line for them than for customer satisfaction. Spent $24k on the riverboat cruise and requested they accommodate my request which would have cost them $100Euro on the trip due to them changing plans, and they refused to do so. Lots of other cruise lines to choose from. We have 3 trips planned and none will be with Uniworld. Read Less
