For the chance to see the Northern lights and Norway in the winter. In that capacity the cruise was all I hoped for, as Cruise & Maritime had no part in the splendor of nature. The food was of a poor standard, pork on the menu turned to ham, sword fish was black, all meats were over cooked, vegetables came in very small amounts, On one menu the great British pub grub was Bavarian meat loaf or spam to you and me. Drinks waiters did not understand that if you wanted a whisky and ginger you do not have a whole can of ginger ale (330ml) pored on top prices were on the high side even for in house brands. Dining table waiters were unhelpful slow to serve each course and did not stay around to check if every thing was all right, so if you had a complaint you had to wait until he came back to clear the plates.I complained one night and tolled so the chef got it wrong, a shrug of the shoulders and gone. Sorry Cruise & Maritime you will not see me again unless you up you game a long way. Read Less

We chose this because of the itinery and it was our first experience of Cruise Maritime Voyages. It will be our last cruise with them. If you want a budget no frills cruise with second rate food (in choice, quality and quantity). Food was often served cold and under cooked, when a complaint was made no one wanted to take responsibility. If you want second rate entertainment with a very limited variety ,then this cruise line will suit you. If you want and expect more for your money then it will not suit you. The ship was kept clean, the crew were very hard working but obviously working within very tight budget constraints and there is a disorganisation about with the company coming from the very top. There were no tea / coffee making facilities in the cabin. We had problems with the plumbing on two occasions (which were attended to and fixed quickly) The on board air conditioning was overbearing and too cold). The entertainment was mainly the very hard working in house team and four guest comedians, with two duos in the lounges. There was no other variety and sometimes no shows just the offering of a fil Drinks were expensive. There was no laundrette, which is useful on a long voyage, just an expensive laundry, which according to other passengers ruined some clothes.. Read Less

I choose this cruise mainly because of the destination and from the reviews thought the ship although old would be ok. First let me say i love cruising and have done 45-50 cruises with very few complaints but honestly this cruise ship and CMV have a lot to answer for. Our cabin 216 was small and we had 1 small porthole and had paid for an oceanview. The porthole was closed for 11 days of a 15 day cruise, whilst they do it for safety reasons there were times we were docked and still it was kept closed we had ask on several occasions to have it opened. We could have had an internal cabin for some $1000 less each. The smell of diesal and the crew smoking was there for the entire cruise. The ship was full to capacity 800 in a ship this size is just not on. Everything was full the buffett was a fight at every meal to find a seat and the quality was really bad even the 3 coffee machines were continually out of order. The dining room although a little better was way below standard. I paid for a VIP package please dont do it !! the wine list is a joke there are 2 white wines and 2 red wines from there signature drinks and 2 from the standard package to choose from i couldnt believe it. They some other wines by the bottle but they had to be paid for and you couldnt get them by the glass. With the other drinks if you wanted anything that wasnt on the drinks menu you couldnt have it !!! also the system they have is that you can only order from a waitor and cant get a drink from the bar. The entertainment was an insult except a young lady soprano who was great the biggest joke was when showtime came at night and old bloke with a banjo came out and started a singalong , i had to laugh !!! the showband seriously was that bad that the singers who did individual shows they didnt even play. I could go on. Excursions altho expensive were good and well organised. This company are treating the elderly british with contempt in my opinion . Go with this ship and company at your peril and as i said i have done nearly 50 cruises and cant believe all i wanted to do was get off . Read Less

Chose this Christmas cruise for a fun filled time including new year. Oh dear what a disappointment! Ship well past it’s “sell by” date. Seating dirty and worn out. Surprise packages from family, totally messed up Half hearted decorations very poor quality, and repetitive entertainment.Officers disinterested in passengers, complaints . Not enough explanation of ships routine. Daily programmes either changed without notice or not included in daily news sheet. Safety on decks needed attention, unable to hear announcements within cabin therefore did not receive important information definitely felt there was a shortage of staff, ie one wine waiter for numerous dinner tables. Very long wait for drinks in bars.no notifications in cabin about charge-for water. £2-80 per bottle!! Mistakes on accounts took sometime to rectify. not enough provision for disabled people.. lifts shut down far too early on evening before departure.Overall not at all a good experience.definitly would never choose CMV again. We booked this cruise at the last minute for £129 per person not expecting much and this was definitely lived up to. We're not novice cruisers having sailed 20+ times with other cruise lines. Our cabin was 6'x10' and basic is an understatement, the bathroom light repeatedly didn't work despite being fixed so we gave up reporting it, the food was awful, bland and lacking variety, the entertainment reminiscent of a 1960's holiday camp and the staff most Eastern European were unfriendly and rude. However the public areas were pleasant to sit in which is the only redeeming feature of the cruise. My husband doesn't suffer being sea sick but he took to his bed due to the ship being so unstable. The Marco Polo reminds me of a converted oil tanker, it smelt of diesel everywhere and was antiquated to the extent it can't be called a classic ship. It needs to be scrapped. We've been on cross Channel ferries that have been more luxurious in terms of exterior aopearance, food quality and cabin standards. The life jackets were grubby and in need of a good clean. Embarkation amd departure were quick which is the only positive thing I can say as we sailed from a local port 15 mins from home. I could continue with negatives but don't wish to relive the ordeal further. Read Less

My husband and I have been on several cruises with CMV and this was truly the worst holiday ever. I would not recommend this cruise at all. This was our only holiday of the year and quite frankly the cruise was terrible – full of disappointments. Not worth the money at all. The cruise destinations included the Azores, Caribbean, Cuba, Cayman Island, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Mexico. We sailed for 35 days and were only let ashore a measly 9 times - even then we were only given 5-6 hours on land. The main reason for this was because the ship refused to pay the docking fees and we had to disembark onto rocky tender boats which took us from the ship to the docks. My husband struggled to climb into the boats as he is a little unsteady on his feet. This is not an idea way to disembark for disabled passengers. Also the itinerary changed at least 3 times –the ship was meant to stop at the Cayman Islands but did not, we only spent 1 day in Cuba when we were promised 2 days and the ship was meant to stop at Nassau but stopped in the Bahamas instead. The Cruise excursions are also a complete rip – off especially the Tropicana show in Havana. We were promised the best tickets in the house so we paid £119 each but we were dismayed to find that we were given side seats with a very restricted view. The show itself was wonderful – what little we could see of it! During the course of the cruise we discovered that all passengers are expected to pay a gratuity fee, 70% of which is retained by the CMV and only 30% goes to the staff. We thought that this was appalling and that all of it should go to lower ranking but extremely hard working staff. Also, it was not made clear how much passengers were allowed to buy in terms of cigarettes from duty free. When we disembarked at Bristol, I witnessed several passengers having their tobacco confiscated. If you enjoy sailing then this cruise would be perfect for you. But if you actually want to explore the islands listed on the cruise itinerary, then I would avoid CMV cruises on the Marco Polo! I was happier getting off the ship than I was getting on! Read Less

Last minute deal, cheap, did no research, should have looked at reports on BBC news from 2014 it would have given some idea of what to expect. Our table staff and steward were very good but they had very little influence on standards. The food sometimes tolerable but in the main it was poor fare, even down to the fact that eggs had to be cooked solid in an attempt to avoid salmonella. The entertainment was of the lowest standard,3 supposed comedians in 5 weeks plus resident dancers who doubled as hosts. I do not have the time to list all of the points of dissatisfaction so people will have to make their own minds up. I will mention the fact that tendering with their lifeboats was a disaster as in Jamaica they had to build a step on quayside as the tender was to low in the water and in Georgetown they said the sea was to rough, which it wasn't, so goodness knows what would happen if there was an emergency. We chose this cruise because it was advertised as having two full days in Havana-at very short notice one day was cancelled and a visit to Belize substituted; not at all what we wanted. George Town visit cancelled, (Unable to bring tenders alongside as we were so far from shore) even though other ships further in shore were all tendering. Due to arrive Ocho Rios 07.00 hrs-finally arrived by tender at 13.00hrs-apparently the ships' carpenter had to build new steps at the landing stage. Clearly no forward planning from this company The cabin walls are so thin that every sound from next door is heard-the words from the T.V. in the next cabin can be clearly heard-the reception desk send down ear-plugs when you complain. This makes absolutely no difference and even the snores from adjacent cabins can be heard. Our cabin was at the stern of the ship and the door-closer to the outside deck was broken. For the first seven nights we had this additional loud bang next to our heads every time someone went out on deck. This is an extremely noisy ship wherever you happen to be. There is no escape from continual games and loud competitions in all lounges and bars. The 4 seats (for 700 pax.) in the library are like gold dust and we were only able to "bag" seats three times on the journey. When the weather turned warmer the noise moved up a level with all deck areas subject to over-amplified noise from the "entertainment" department. I have never been on a warm-water cruise where it's impossible to have a quiet drink out on deck. The food is adequate but the cafe and restaurant most definitely are not. We had food and drink spilled on us in the main restaurant (not the fault of the staff, who were extremely good) because too many tables had been crammed in. The situation in the cafe was even worse as they continuously ran out of crockery and cutlery. One night I had to eat roast lamb and veg. with a spoon as "everything is in the dishwasher". The standard of lectures was extremely poor-all read from scripts. We have been on over two dozen crises and never experienced anything like this. Despite complaining both on board and on our return, this company is unwilling to make any compensation for these five miserable weeks. Read Less

I chose this because I wanted to see Cuba before it was spoilt. Ship was old, no use to disabled. Every seat in the restaurant was either broken or badly repaired. The entertainment was awful. Singers couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket and the three “comedians” we had all told the same jokes to different degrees of bad. The ship rocked and rolled even when tied up in port. One night was particularly bad and I was the only one on our table for ten who rocked up for dinner; the dining room was practically empty and it still took over two hours to serve me. The food was ok but, extremely small portions and an excess of courgettes. It was downright dangerous. The hospital did extremely well with all the broken bones. Food and drinks flew off the table and the tables and chairs flew as well in the buffet. This was about my 30th cruise (1st with CMV and last) the worst I have ever had. The painting course was very expensive although the crafters were very good value and some useful items produced. No launderette. Very few pubic toilets. I rang them to take me off their mailing list - I wouldn’t go with them again even if they offered me a world cruise for free!, Read Less

My husband booked a snorkelling tour through Cruise and Maritime with Starwind cruises St Georges of Grenada .He and others were told to be on board by 45 minutes , he set his Omega accurate dive watch . At 40 minutes when he was 2 yards from the rear of the boat , they started the engines and left . He managed to hold his mask on and not drown in the turbulence . This was 3/4 off a mile off shore with rocks and no buildings . There was 1 other boat with divers he swam 1/2 a mile to it praying that it would not leave , and hoping he would not drown with exhaustion . The rescuer recalled the Starwind , the Captain of which said it dont matter man , and was intent on handing out the rum . The escort from Cruise and Maritime did not identify , help or even ask if medical help was necessary . The tour manager Susan of the Marco polo , was obstructive , lied and failed to help in any manner . Cruise and Maritime have apologised and offered 400 pounds for the distress caused by this potentially fatal incident and are reviewing if they may use this company ie Starwind Cruises again . All of the above is documented and we have statements of other passengers and witnesses to the fact that Starwind cruises did not carry out a head count . I have witnesses to the fact that the Cruise and Maritime staff lied , I had asked immigration officers to help us report the incident as no one was aboard the Marco Polo except the navigational officer , the officers arranged a meeting with the Shore Agent for CMV , at 8.30 pm Susan claimed she had a phone call that he was not attending , at this point he stepped forward and identified himself . Cruise and Maritime are now failing to address the issue at all , that the Tours promoted should be safe and that the escorts have a role to play in head counts etc . The ship is old , faded holes and ragged carpets , poor food , food and drink obviously bought at the ends of their sell by dates so became unavailable during the second half of the cruise . Meat was disgusting . Read Less
