For the chance to see the Northern lights and Norway in the winter. In that capacity the cruise was all I hoped for, as Cruise & Maritime had no part in the splendor of nature. The food was of a poor standard, pork on the menu turned to ham, sword fish was black, all meats were over cooked, vegetables came in very small amounts, On one menu the great British pub grub was Bavarian meat loaf or spam to you and me. Drinks waiters did not understand that if you wanted a whisky and ginger you do not have a whole can of ginger ale (330ml) pored on top prices were on the high side even for in house brands. Dining table waiters were unhelpful slow to serve each course and did not stay around to check if every thing was all right, so if you had a complaint you had to wait until he came back to clear the plates.I complained one night and tolled so the chef got it wrong, a shrug of the shoulders and gone. Sorry Cruise & Maritime you will not see me again unless you up you game a long way. Read Less

The cabin, serving and bar staff were very good. The cabin was good, but freezing for the first 7, yes 7 days. This was despite reporting it to be cold everyday, Apparently someone fictionally meassured the temperature at 24 ( I wish), so they didn't need to act. I stamped my feet and this was after they had increased the temperature twice, they came and measured it in my pressence at 19. The man then adjusted it there and then and fixed it. My grievance is they didn't solve the problem 3 days earlier because they decided to ignore me. On the last day I met another person that had the same experience and he had been ill in a freezing room for 14 days. He had been told his room was 24 too. On my birthday we booked the special menu in what I found out later was called the garage by the staff, because it was so cold. When I think back I don't know why we stayed because it was shivery cold. They assured us it would warm up. The starters were lovely, soup delicious, but then they came with a cold main course. We were being served by the maitre de, so if he didn't make sure it was good then there isn't much hope for the rest. My husband is gluten free. The restaurant staff were good and made sure he got toast etc, but they just don't do the stuff you can get on Fred and P&O. If you're gluten free you wont get scones, pizzas and the little extras that make a holiday. I wont be using Cruise Maritime again Read Less

We booked this cruise because of the destinations and the size of the ship. As Donte states, the Marco Polo has quite a following and we met many passengers who had booked for the same reasons as us and because they loved the ship.. We enjoyed all the ports of call, many were very beautiful and all were very interesting. We too hired a canoe at Boca de Valeria (highly recommended) for 5$ as well as taking a trip in a taxi canoe across to the spit at Alto de Chao which was beautiful and where you can swim in the Amazon. Manaus was very interesting and you can save yourself some money by walking up to the Theatre yourselves and booking on to a tour for the equivalent of £2.50 pp and you can do the same for the evening concert though don’t be tempted to walk at night as it is extremely dangerous! You are advised not to wear jewellery or to conceal cameras. There were those who did not heed this advice to their cost! We were worried that we would become bored during the many sea days but this was not a problem at all. There was much to do including the daily walk around the ship (8 laps of deck 10 is a mile), arts and craft classes, interesting (OK and some not so interesting) lectures, drama club and choir (though only go to this if you don’t suffer from high blood pressure or if you are a practising musician as this was poorly led by one of the entertainments’ crew!), Zumba and other similar work out clubs daily or joining in the three (and sometimes more) quizzes a day, watching the fabulous shows in the evening or the various entertainers or just spending quality time with our many new friends or just sitting watching the Amazon or world sail by. As Donte correctly states, our days were soon filled. Our cabin was very comfortable with plenty of storage space, (low down and in the middle though no upgraded for us) and we were looked after very well by Lwin. Food was plentiful with 3 full meals a day + afternoon tea and supper or the occasional evening food extravaganza. We mainly ate all our meals in the Waldorf Restaurant though we occasionally ait in the Marco Polo Bistro. While afternoon tea was available (including an amazing chocolate feast) we were on early sitting so had no need for this though there were obscene amounts of food available if you wanted it (and some clearly did!) The service by the waiters in the Waldorf was superb and nothing was too much for them and they were always friendly and helpful. We too did a lot of research before the holiday and picked carefully three excursions plus the Belem transfer. All our excursions were good and these particular ones were good value (having checked the cost of doing it independently beforehand) and very enjoyable. At many of the islands we too shared a taxi (or canoe) with friends which was cheaper and more flexible. We couldn't fault the cleanliness on this ship and the service was all very good, the crew all work hard, are polite, friendly and helpful. The only thing that spoiled the cruise slightly were the people who moaned - often about things that, had they read the paperwork properly they would have known about and often you would here comparisons with other cruise companies. Let’s be up front here. You pay for what you get though I think what you get is amazing considering the cost. If you get a chance, especially if you go on this or a similar cruise, read Murder on the Marco Polo. You will meet the same types of people and have a very good chuckle! The cruise was absolutely fantastic and great value for money and one which we too will never forget but as Donte said, if you want a posh, modern ship this isn't for you. Read Less

My husband booked a snorkelling tour through Cruise and Maritime with Starwind cruises St Georges of Grenada .He and others were told to be on board by 45 minutes , he set his Omega accurate dive watch . At 40 minutes when he was 2 yards from the rear of the boat , they started the engines and left . He managed to hold his mask on and not drown in the turbulence . This was 3/4 off a mile off shore with rocks and no buildings . There was 1 other boat with divers he swam 1/2 a mile to it praying that it would not leave , and hoping he would not drown with exhaustion . The rescuer recalled the Starwind , the Captain of which said it dont matter man , and was intent on handing out the rum . The escort from Cruise and Maritime did not identify , help or even ask if medical help was necessary . The tour manager Susan of the Marco polo , was obstructive , lied and failed to help in any manner . Cruise and Maritime have apologised and offered 400 pounds for the distress caused by this potentially fatal incident and are reviewing if they may use this company ie Starwind Cruises again . All of the above is documented and we have statements of other passengers and witnesses to the fact that Starwind cruises did not carry out a head count . I have witnesses to the fact that the Cruise and Maritime staff lied , I had asked immigration officers to help us report the incident as no one was aboard the Marco Polo except the navigational officer , the officers arranged a meeting with the Shore Agent for CMV , at 8.30 pm Susan claimed she had a phone call that he was not attending , at this point he stepped forward and identified himself . Cruise and Maritime are now failing to address the issue at all , that the Tours promoted should be safe and that the escorts have a role to play in head counts etc . The ship is old , faded holes and ragged carpets , poor food , food and drink obviously bought at the ends of their sell by dates so became unavailable during the second half of the cruise . Meat was disgusting . Read Less

I wanted to take the opportunity to go down the river Amazon and visit some of the Caribbean islands. I stayed in a B & B in Bristol the night before embarkation. Managed to have a look round Bristol (my first time there) must go back for a few days sometime soon. The embarkation was a bit of a nightmare, having arrived as requested at 4.00 pm we were herded into a hanger and it took several hours before we were called. However, once on board found our cabin and luggage arrived soon after. The dining was 'free seating' which is not to my liking but this only happened on a few occasions. The ship may have looked a little worn round the edges but it was perfectly serviceable and kept scrupulously clean, staff were constantly cleaning. My inside cabin was at the pointy end and so I felt every bump and swell but fortunately I quite liked that. We had a problem with the shower and it was remedied within an hour or so. Similarly the sink leaked and a new waste was fitted the next day. Dining - I have very fond memories of the food, I ate far too much but it was hard not to. there was a very good selection of food at every sitting. You would be hard put to go hungry. I did not try any of the entertainment so cannot comment. The ports and shore excursions were well planned and when disembarkation was problematic because of shore difficulties the crew always came up trumps by making steps to add to the jetty or boats, nothing was too much for them. Drinks on board were very reasonable. Best thing that made the cruise pleasurable were the staff. Read Less

We chose this because of the itinery and it was our first experience of Cruise Maritime Voyages. It will be our last cruise with them. If you want a budget no frills cruise with second rate food (in choice, quality and quantity). Food was often served cold and under cooked, when a complaint was made no one wanted to take responsibility. If you want second rate entertainment with a very limited variety ,then this cruise line will suit you. If you want and expect more for your money then it will not suit you. The ship was kept clean, the crew were very hard working but obviously working within very tight budget constraints and there is a disorganisation about with the company coming from the very top. There were no tea / coffee making facilities in the cabin. We had problems with the plumbing on two occasions (which were attended to and fixed quickly) The on board air conditioning was overbearing and too cold). The entertainment was mainly the very hard working in house team and four guest comedians, with two duos in the lounges. There was no other variety and sometimes no shows just the offering of a fil Drinks were expensive. There was no laundrette, which is useful on a long voyage, just an expensive laundry, which according to other passengers ruined some clothes.. Read Less

We booked this cruise because of the destinations and the ship. We have sailed on the Marco Polo before and love the character and friendliness. The Marco Polo has quite a following and we met many passengers who had booked for the same reasons as us. We enjoyed all the ports of call, many were beautiful (the Isles of Salut were amazing) all were interesting. We recommend hiring a canoe at Boca de Valeria, we were taken down some creeks to a nearby village where we were shown around, it gives you a real feel for the place (cost 50 real - £12.50 for 4 of us). I would advise not to pay to take pictures of the anyone with an animal though, keeping wild animals is against the law and will stop if people won't pay. Our only concern about this cruise had been that we would get bored during the long spells at sea. No problem, our days were soon filled with painting lessons, crafts (2 sessions a day), lectures, quizzes and watching for flying fish, dolphins and whales plus our new friends on board. Our cabin was very comfortable with plenty of storage space, (we'd been upgraded again) looked after well by Yulia. Food was plentiful with 3 full meals a day + afternoon tea and supper available. Breakfast and afternoon tea are both self service as is the cafeteria. We found portion sizes to be just right and the salad bar in the restaurant at lunchtime was great. We could rarely manage any afternoon tea, as for supper - no way. We did a lot of research before the holiday and picked carefully just 4 excursions plus the Belem transfer. All our excursions were good and these particular ones were good value (having checked the cost of doing it independently beforehand) and very enjoyable. wanted away for Christmas and New Year My wife Myself her Sister and Friend aged between 60 and 73 having been on larger ships before we were a little unsure of the Marco Polo But right from the start at least you knew your way around Boarding not bad from arriving at quay to our rooms about 40 minutes which we thought normal nice touch mulled wine handed round while we waited Cabin small but functional with good shower , Cabin Steward excellent nothing was a problem ,Every thing was spotless (but too many full length mirrors ,will have to diet) plenty of variety at mealtime with the waiter and wine waiter at our table good fun and always smiling Shows were good and there were a variety of talks lectures and quizzes every day there also were art and craft classes everyday . this suited us as my wife and sister liked the lectures their friend loved all the arts and crafts and I had my quizzes So we always had something to talk about when we met we did not go on many excursions as we had been to most of the places before but the ship anchored off Maderia to bring in the New Year and the firework display was fantastic only downside was that we had to wait for a couple of hours to disembark but fore by that i would recommend the Marco Polo if you want a small pleasant ship without great shopping Malls or Climbing Frames that is easy to get around and give good value for money Read Less

Just came back from a fantastic short trip around Ireland on the marco polo, Ive cruised with 4 different lines before and marco polo is by far my favourite. It really does offer a unique experience that you never get on the more modern cruise ship so anyone with any interest in ships at all will enjoy. Staff we found very helpful and irina our cabin stewardess was excellent. We enjoyed the itinerary and embarkation and disembarkation where well organised. Ships was clean and tidy with beautiful open decks and excellent food in the main restaurant and they offer lots of buy one get one free offers which made it excellent value for money. The only slight down side was the queues in the bistro and if your going for a long cruise over say 2 weeks you might struggle to fill your days as it doesn’t have the amount of entertainment a mega cruise ship has but that’s what makes it a unique experience. We chose this cruise as it was convenient for us as we live in Bristol, and we thought the weather should be warm. Convenient it was, but the weather was far from good, which was no fault of the ship, obviously. However. I was in bed for 2 days with sea sickness. We were tossed around everywhere, which is one of the drawbacks of a small ship. We have been on bigger ships, and not even known were were on the water. It was most unpleasant, and worrying as you had no way of knowing what the next day would bring. It was extremely hard to keep your feet when walking about and ruined the whole experience for me. The staff, food and entertainment were excellent, as was our cabin. The weather in the Canaries was just passable, but it poured rain in Madeira. The drinks were very reasonably priced. Don't pay for the excursions. We had an hour on a tuk tuk in Madeira, it cost us £84. We saw nothing and spent 20 minutes looking round a shop. I complained to the excursion rep on the desk who was extremely rude and spoke to me as if I were a child. Complete rip off. We did however book as excursion at Coruna, before we sailed, which was great. Most ports have open topped buses for sight seeing. Read Less
