We wanted to see the Norwegian Fjords and only a small (ish) ship can get to all the best ones. We loved the size of this ship as you were no overwhelmed by the size and if you met someone you liked to talk to you would be sure to see them again, a real plus point. The only moan we had was the size of the cabin, we did have a balcony but the room was very narrow to what we are used to, but if you pick a small ship then you should expect that unless you upgrade. The service was brilliant, no faults there but we do wish the Fred would do away with service charges as we always tip well for good service, we removed the SC at the start of the trip. I hope that Fred follows P&O and pay their staff better and remove the SC. The pool was warm and underused which was great. The entertainment was first class, as good as any ship we have been on. Also and its only our view you cannot 'graze' all the time, which is a good thing. No eating between meals. Lats of all the drinks are very reasonable. Well done Fred Read Less

While on our first short cruise to the Norwegian fjords on Fred.Olsen's Balmoral in May 2016 we booked this year's longer cruise to the fjords north of Bergen and Bergen itself. As the cruise started in Belfast this saved connecting flights and the itinerary included a short visit to Kirkwall on the Orkney Island. The coach connection provided (at a cost) by a local travel agent and embarkation went to plan but there was then a long wait till departure. The following days were enjoyable, blessed with wonderful weather, good food, excellent entertainment and plenty of companionship among our fellow travellers. We enjoyed the extra perks of a balcony suite, though 8010 on the port side seemed to miss out on a lot of the sunshine! Towards the end of the 8-night cruise we learnt that some of our fellow passengers had been laid low with what may have been an upper respiratory infection and that some of the crew were also unwell, but still working. Unfortunately, soon after our return we both succumbed to a particularly debilitating virus and almost 2 weeks' later we are still "under the weather". This has not just been the usual headcold but a full-on viral infection with fever, coughing and overall malaise. Could it be that we picked up a foreign strain which has knocked us both out and curtailed our normal very active lives? The promised feedback form has not yet been received from Fred.Olsen despite having received emails from them prior to our departure. Our subsequent illness has left a rather negative feeling about cruising overall and perhaps the Fred.Olsen line, with whom I first travelled in 1962! Read Less

Went with our active retired group. It was my first cruise and I had a BALL.Cabin very comfy. Food to suit all tastes. Staff very attentive and courteous.Activities to suit all.The highlight for me was the dancing .The hosts were fantastic and gave us the confidence to try new dances.I feel they are not given enough credit for how they care about the older ladies who like to dance. All in all a wonderful holiday. The shows were great and brought out the wonderful and varied talents of the crew. The photo gallery was a great idea as it saved having to carry a camera around all the time and you only buy the ones you like.the shops were good and well stocked but the boutique could do with having some underwear and tights in stock.I loved the touch of pampering with the square of chocolate on my pillow every night.I would definitely do another cruise especially for the dancing. I had never cruised on my own before, though I had cruised with my husband before he passed away. This was my first experience with Fred Olsen. I can honestly say that I enjoyed every minute. From being greeted at Greenock, to leaving the ship after 8 days, I felt safe and well cared for. The crew were friendly without being familiar, The ship was immaculate, and the food was delicious at every level, from formal dining to casual coffee breaks. The activities and entertainment .... super! The tours were well arranged, and the guides knew their stuff. I enjoy my own company at times, and there were ample places to sit and read if I felt like it. Perhaps i should add that I met a new friend on the cruise, and we will keep in touch. I was apprehensive about going solo, but am so glad I took the plunge! I shall be cruising with "Fred" again! Read Less

Tried a Fred Olsen cruise purely because it left from Greenock. Had an enjoyable time. The cabin a balcony suite was excellent, clean, spacious and an added bonus we could smoke on our balcony. Must be the only cruise line which allows this. The service and staff were brilliant. The food a bit too fancy for our basic taste as we don't eat fish or game but what we ate was well presented and always hot. The entertainment is poor and excursions too expensive hence my 4 star assessment. The itinerary was okay some destinations are very remote and if you don't want to go on an organised trip there isn't much to do ashore, however, the scenery is fantastic. I would definitely recommend taking the all inclusive drinks package it cost us £10 pppd and saved us a fortune. Would cruise again with Fred Olsen and wish there could be more cruises from Scotland. Leaving Nottingham in good time for our 3.30pm slot to arrive, we were horrified to find the M6 completely closed between junctions 18 and 19.It took over an hour queuing to get off at junction 18, and then following an abnormal load for several miles after that, we eventually rejoined the M6 at junction 20 only to exit as planned at 21A heading for Liverpool.Time was marching on, and our instructions said that boarding was closing at 5.30pm .We eventually arrived at 4.55pm! The car-parking was prebooked and simple, as was check-in. We had booked a Junior Suite with a double bed, but on arrival in our cabin the beds were made up as singles. Complaining to the assistant housekeeper, she explained that converting the beds to a double would compromise the space in the bedroom and the only way to get into bed was by climbing over it- totally unsatisfactory! Reluctantly we asked for the beds to remain as singles. Cruising with Fred Olsen for the fourth time we knew what to expect in all other aspects and were not disappointed. Norway's scenery is amazing! My wife has dietary problems including being alcohol and dairy free, and on some of the nights, in spite of being given the menu on the previous evening for adaptations choice was very limited. In spite of the irksome niggles overall we enjoyed the cruise, and will return in due course. Read Less

We chose this cruise for three reasons. Firstly we wanted to visit the Norwegian Fjords. Secondly e liked the idea that it sailed from a UK port and finally it was organised by SAGA and we trust their services. We were picked up by car and dropped at Liverpool Cruise terminal and the return was just the reverse of that. It was extremely smooth with luggage being well and speedily handled on embarkation and disembarkation. The ship was comfortable and suited us but may not suit younger people as the entertainment was not particularly geared to a young audience. There were places to sit and read or just talk so we were not confined to our cabin as has happened on larger ships. The cabin was not large but sufficed for our needs but we also had a balcony so it didn't feel too cramped. The crew were very helpful and pleasant throughout. The food was good with plenty of choice. Drinks service in the various lounges was efficient. The ships entertainment team were better than any I have experienced on other cruise lines. They actually had singers who could sing - a rarity in my experience. They had good additional entertainers including a good comedian, a good singer a flamenco guitarist and a multi-instrumentalist (clarinet, saxophone and flute) We booked four excursions but one was cancelled due to lack of take-up, The other three were better than most I have experienced before and although not cheap were reasonable value for money. Beware of the price a drinks ashore in Norway. A 500 ml bottle of beer cost the equivalent of £11.50 Overall this was a superb cruise. I have cruised about 12 times altogether with five different cruise lines and this was the best so far. Far better than P&O and a little better than Thomson. An enjoyable experience Read Less

This was our first cruise and it exceeded expectations. Boudicca was spick and span, cleanliness was a top priority, staff were friendly, the cabin was comfortable (but we spent little time there apart from sleeping) and the food was excellent. We used two organised tours which were very good but the rest of the time when we docked we "did it ourselves" with the help of the local tourist information. The weather was good apart from rain on a couple of days which wasn't heavy enough to spoil the visit. Other than that we saw the splendour of the fjords with one or two extra fjords visited that were not on the original schedule. Read Less
