We chose this cruise because it sailed from Liverpool. Fed up of travelling from the north to Southampton. Food was generally good and as a vegetarian I had a good choice. Cabins were fresh and clean. beds and bedding were very good. Entertainment was mediocre and so we didn’t go to the Neptune each night. Some of the entertainers had been on previous cruises. Ports of call In Canada were interesting but tours expensive. One walking tour cost £80. We had to be in The Neptune st 11.15 so we missed lunch. We were told we would be given a snack. This turned out to be a cereal bar and a bottle of water. There was nowhere on the walk to buy a sandwich. We returned to the ship around 5.30. Most people on the 11km walk were not pleased. After so many complaints we were given a 50% refund. Well done Fred. Unfortunately half way round our trip (26 days) we had a serious outbreak of Noro virus. This lasted until our return to Liverpool. We couldn’t use the pools, jacuzzis. Launderette etc. Salt and pepper was taken off the tables and food in the buffet had to be served by staff. We were constantly having our hands sanitized. The black watch is an old ship and there is constant noise of chip chip, grind grind, bang bang, drill drill. This reverberates into the cabin and is very annoying. Major rewiring was taking place during our cruise so ceiling panels were removed. The cabins are very creaky and I would advise taking ear plugs if you want a good nights sleep. Staff were very pleasant and friendly but I wouldn’t go on this ship again due to its age and the need for constant serious maintenance. Read Less

Had to cancel our World cruise in August due to unexpected ill health. End of November all was ok but not able to rebook as no vacancies. Found this cruise and they had unsold cabins, decided to try them. Balcony cabins available but they allow smoking on them which we did not like. There was available a terrace cabin so after talking directly with Head Office were reassured it was one of their new cabins. So booked in December. Embarkation went fine. and we were shown to our cabin. Not what we were used to, but very basic. Still we made the best of it. Went to main dining room first night glad we were in the small side room as restaurant very noise. Nice people but told them we liked to eat in buffet more flexible. Joined them on formal nights. Liked Buffet very much small and quiet. Food very good and very varied. Staff very friendly. Ship is old and maintenance went on daily. sometimes very annoying. On the whole enjoyed the cruise but only because of the friendly people on board. The organisation was dreadful. Ran out of things, New digital TVs which did not work till nearly home. Silly things but very annoying. never had this on any other cruise line. Read Less

This cruise was chosen because of the ports of cal -. Caribbean, Panama Canal, Easter Island and Tahiti. It met my expectations. Great service, entertainment, lectures and tours. The meals were a good portion size, varied and not too large. The visiting entertainers and lecturers were first rate and the Black Watch entertainers were very enthusiastic. The band at times was too loud. Optional daily things to do were many and so many choices. The crew were a delight and nothing was too much trouble. Shore excursions catered for every interest and were well organised. The person giving the port talks was very informative and certainly knew his stuff. What makes Fred Olsen stand out from the crowd is the service, the meals, the many and varied ports and the feel that you are really sailing on a real ship. They may be older vessels but they have the feel of the grand old days of maritime travel. Having sailed with a number of shipping lines over many years I keep coming back to Fred Olsen. Whilst the voyage did have gastro problems after Peru the ship were quick to take action and the medics were very thorough. The Captain kept passengers updated twice daily on the outbreak. Would I do this again. A resounding yes. There is still the other half of the world voyage to take at a later date. Read Less
