This was our first cruise with NCL and compared to other lines there were plusses, minus and draws. Concerning the cabin the upside was there was a shower door not a curtain and a real hair dryer!!! However the vanity area was tiny and had no storage and there was only one outlet (not sure how ships can do this as everything requires charging these days). Cabin was a draw. The amount of activities during the day was also a draw '" pretty standard. Nighttime was great '" plenty of activities going on '" karaoke was not made into a competition and was in a much better setting than we have seen. Shows were average to good. NCL wins this one. Dining  this one I have to preface as we knew what we were signing up for. This line has the multiple venues on it, plus the MDR and buffet options. However we found that the surcharges for some options (Chinese and Brazilian Steakhouse) were kind of steep at $15.00 pp. We did dine at Le Bistro which we thought was great and reasonable '" however Cagney’s was nothing mind-blowing. The thing we disliked about the MDR is the choices were repetitive and not up to par with other lines. I’m pretty sure this is because they want to steer you towards the pay to eat dining. For this reason I wouldn’t consider taking this line on any cruise longer than 7 days- especially not a Transatlantic. Not a loss, but not really a draw either. I’ll call this a detraction. We had heard from some friends that took the Dawn several years ago they did not like this type of cruising because it was difficult to meet others. I have to concur as the 2 nights we ate in the Venetian we requested to be seated with others '" of course we were not. This doesn’t seem to fit into their business model as most tables were set up for to 2 to 4 diners. We really enjoy meeting the other passengers and hearing about their travel experiences. Another reason to not take a longer sailing on this line. This was a loss for NCL. The staff was competent, but they lacked the warmth and friendliness I have seen in other lines. Although we frequented the pub, we were never greeted by name, asked where we were from, how is the cruise going etc. NCL gets a minus on this. There were plenty of pre-school kids on this cruise and I have to applaud the parents as they were all well behaved and any bad behavior was nipped in the bud. Way to go Moms & Dads! A plus but this had nothing to do with NCL. Finally, this was absolutely the WORST disembarkation ever. NCL pretty much said '" whatever you all want to do '" take off your bags- fine with us. Have your bags at the terminal '" ok by us. The problem with this is that everyone decided to leave ALL AT ONCE. This resulted in a line that took over an hour before leaving the ship with passengers standing in a line that wrapped around the ship including outdoors. Why weren’t you classy and time everything out like the other lines do? If you want to take your bags off you must be off the ship at a certain time. Want to get your bags at the terminal '" great '" wait in one of the lounges or dining rooms until your color is called. I really felt bad for parents with little ones and passengers that were not handicapped but had mobility issues that made standing for a long time difficult. This is no way to treat passengers on the last day of their cruise. Disgraceful. NCL, you should be embarrassed- this is the last impression you leave with the passengers and it was also the worst. NCL is at the bottom of the barrel for disembarkation.   Read Less

I Just finished my cruise on the Carnival Pride, and outside of Mikita and her girls at David's Steak house, young girl from India on the Lido Deck and the pizza guy on the Lido deck this was the worst Carnival cruise I have ever been on. We were not notified until after 8PM, Saturday night that our cruise would not begin on 11/6, but would sail on Monday 11/7 at 1PM with over $100,000.00 worth of damages due to a storm that delay the Carnival Pride getting into Baltimore on 11/6.Crew members told me that passengers in the upper floors were sleeping in the hall ways and in the atrium which was flooded. Crew members told me that they were afraid during that storm. The Captain, knowing the Tropical Storm Shawn was in the Atlantic, heading towards Bermuda, took us into the storm while in my, and other guest opinions should have changed our destinations to New England. 48 hours later we arrived in Bermuda on Wednesday at 1PM and it took us until about 2:30PM to dock, clear customs and get to our first excursion. Our excursion lasted about 1 hr, 20 mins,, and since the shops close at 5PM, we stayed in the King's Wharf area and shopped till the shops closed and then went to dinner. On Sunday e were told we had to be back on board by 12:30PM, since the ship was leaving early, with the shops not opening till 10PM we figured with the 20 minute ferry ride, each way, to Hamilton, or the 45 minute travel time to, each way St. George's, it was not worth the risk of missing the 12:30/1PM sailing. we arrived off the Va Coast around 12:45Pm Friday afternoon and sailed up and down from Nagg's Head to the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay the rest of Friday and all day Saturday just punching holes in the water. 48 hours from Baltimore to Bermuda and only 22 hours from Bermuda to the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay. Two of the six Atrium elevators did not work, storm damage. Jay the Shopping expert, saw only twice, outside of on TV. One was at his post, the day before his show, which he had pamphlets out for Freeport. Very, very rude and arrogant! Only saw the cruise director on TV and stage. Very, very elusive. 50% or the crew was friendly, 50% of the crew was rude. What did Carnival offer us in return, they said that they would return 1/7th of the trip, in approximately two weeks, and only charge us 6/7th's of the tip fee. Carnival did allow us to cancel the remaining two excursions we booked. We had to spend an extra hotel night, and food which Carnival said a first they would not pay us back. So I paid $1253.95 for a five day boat ride, with no compensation from Carnival, no discount or upgrades for a future cruise, no payment for my room I had to rent so I could catch this cruise. Carnival did N-O-T-H-I-N-G! Food on the Lido deck and most items in the dining room, unless it came directly from the grill was cold and outside of the temperature safety holding zones. The busboys seemed to be standing around and only cleared tables when they felt like the really needed to, in non peak serving times. A ships tour of the kitchen was something else! I am a retired chef and a restaurant manager and the kitchen was "dirty". I would have been embarrassed to invite anyone to come into any of my kitchens and see the dried on food on carts, the floor needing deck scrubbing badly, standing water, food splattered n the sides of walk-in fridges, and poor food preparation. The stainless steel walls stainless steel looked like they had not been polished in months. The quantity of different gourmet meals offered for dinner each dinner meal has decreased to just a few gourmet meals and what food other items that was offered is something I could get in any Mom & Pop Diner. This was my 9th cruise, and the worst one I have ever been on. I expected a lot more from Carnival than what I got this time. If this is the "New" Carnival way of doing business, I and a lot of guest do not approve of it! I had to pay an extra $140, room and food, that I did not plan on. In my personal opinion, Carnival has gone from a very good cruise line to a so-so cruise line. Even though our next cruise will qualify us for platinum status, we are seriously thinking about trying another line. Read Less

We were on the October 9th Bermuda cruise from New York on the NCL Gem with our two children (young adults). Although this was the first cruise for them, this is the 5th cruise for my husband and I. Here are my comments regarding the ship : The main dining room (buffet) is way too crowded. There is hardly room to move between the tables and drinks (coffee, water, ice tea) are not served at the table. You have to get up and fight the crowd everytime you want a refill. The food is very Meat and potatoes throughout the ship, and most of the time cold. We tried two specialty restaurants and this was not better. The only place where we could get water on the ship was on the 12th floor and there was a sign on the water dispensing machine saying we could not refill water bottles, so it meant many trips from anywhere in the boat to the dining room to get something to drink. The cabins a very small. Disambarkation was a nightmare. We stood in line for 1 hour before getting to customs. We tried to make the best of it... the children had a lot of fun on the climbing wall, bowling alley, hot tub, swimming pool and bars. And we had a wonderful time in Bermuda. But no more NCL for us. I was intrigued by ebobh's comments on the Oct. 28 voyage to Bermuda. I agree that it was bumpy with people and objects tumbling about. Also, though, in Bermuda we were not allowed to visit the port of St. George's because of gale force winds. The destinations crew did a great job of rescheduling excursions from Hamilton, although some were cancelled because of conditions. However, the quartering seas from Bermuda to Nassau were much larger, reaching 40 feet. I could see a wave cresting on a swell at the 8th deck level. The winds reached 40+ knots and decks were closed. It was apparent that neither the bridge crew nor deck and hospitality crew were reacting appropriately for the conditions. Restaurants and lounges were closed after passengers were injured by falls and broken glass, not before. Announcements were not timely. Another problem was the gobs of soot that descended on the pool and other open decks after the generators were cranked up Monday the 31st for a crew emergency drill. Anyone sitting on deck furniture found themselves covered in greasy black goo. The stuff was still not cleaned up by Tuesday lunchtime. Another belch from the stacks descended a few days later. Although we were really pleased with our voyage on Regent Voyager last year, we were not at all comfortable on this ship. A little research turned up the fact that the Russian hull was designed for an ice-breaking supply ship, not a passenger vessel. The interior was the noisiest ever, allowing no sleep for the 4 nights getting to and from Bermuda. Panels shrieked, drawers opened and the 4 props vibrated incredibly through the vessel. Mini rogue waves caused a tremendous booming in the whole aft area. Never Navigator again for me. I like the small ship, all-inclusive idea (when we added up the extra charges on other lines we came out ahead on Regent despite the expensive looking up-front payment) but this was not a pleasant experience for half the time. A great cruise on the Explorer of the Seas. It was our first time sailing and honestly, I had no idea what to expect.Key things- Amazing staff. From the people who wash the deck to the cruise director, I only encountered people in two areas that were less than fantastic (rock climbing guy had a chip on his shoulder and the people in the photo area are brutal).Food was FANTASTIC in the dining room and for buffet food, it was top notch in the Windjammer.Fantastic, friendly and capable bar service.I would honestly say the only things I did not like about this cruise were the rock climbing people, the photo people and I did notice there were some areas that let you know this ship is no spring chicken. She's showing her years. Water is a sneaky enemy and it finds itself getting in places you don't want it to be. That said, Explorer of the Seas is a fantastic boat. Her staff are top notch (I have been to Disney twice in the past two years and the staff on the Explorer are even more friendly than Disney's).If you are looking for a reasonable price on a great cruise, Explorer of the Seas is a great value that you will be sure to enjoy.Happy cruising!
