We wanted to see Eastern Europe. The cruise was the most pleasant way to visit that part of Europe. Given the flexible departure/return airline dates we were able to explore both the Vienna/Salzburg area before the cruise and all of Romania after the cruise. Embarcation and disembarkation from the ship was easy. However, the staff at the Hilton Bucharest, were surly and less than helpful. All the shore excursions were great with the exception of Belgrade. It was less than I had expected, however it was a rainy day. The food onboard was excellent, but at breakfast, unless you got there early the buffet was a bit picked over. Our room was good, but when we arrived the bathroom really smelled like cigarette smoke. Most of the crew were Eastern European and smoked constantly on the upper deck including our tour director. After reporting the issue the staff corrected it. We did not travel with children and because of the season few were onboard. We definitely would choose Viking again, in fact we are booked on a spring cruise on the Elbe with them. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the history and the ports of call. We got to visit many UNESCO World Heritage sites. The crew of the Viking Atla was excellent. The food was outstanding. The included shore excursions were great. It was nice to leisurely cruise along the Danube. We loved the scenery in Germany, Austria and Hungary. We were in Budapest for a national holiday and sat on the top deck watching the fireworks. This was an added bonus. The entire staff made us feel welcome. This was our first river cruise and we didn't know what to expect. Although there aren't as many activities there is still plenty to do. The entertainment consisted of a piano player. He was outstanding. With fewer passengers than on an ocean cruise you meet a lot more of them. We met 2 sisters from California at dinner and quite a few people on our land portio of the tour and we hope to stay in contact with them. A river cruise is a much more intimate experience. Read Less
