We chose to go with Viking based the recommendations from friends. We are not typically cruiseship people; however, the limited number of passengers (900) appealed to us. We were not disappointed. The Viking Sun is a floating masterpiece of design and function. We booked a Penthouse Veranda Suite on Deck 6. I would book the same type of room on a lower level as the rough seas one whole day made it difficult to maneuver in the room. We had exceptional housekeepers. Both women were friendly and helpful for the entire experience. No need to twist a towel into an animal shape. The bar on the bow of the ship on the 7th Floor was wonderful. The view was always peaceful. The service was exceptional. We would also say that prices for alcoholic drinks were more than reasonable. We heard many people talking about other cruise lines and their exorbitant prices for drinks. We ate most of our meals in the buffet. The food was delicious, creative, gourmet worthy. We enjoyed having so many choices at each meal. We ate twice at Manifred's which was excellent. We dined once at the Chef's Table. We think that the space should feature a specific cuisine and not the "strange" combination of items that we experienced one evening. As for the excursions, I would concur with other Viking passengers: some of the excursions were merely large tour buses driving around congested streets. One glaring problem is that the excursions are NOT handicap accessible. There are no accommodations for getting off the ship and into a tour bus or van. In one instance, a gentleman in a wheelchair was lifted into the bus by the guide as NO Viking personnel were on hand to help him on or off the bus. The disembarkation ramps or steps were sometimes difficult for able bodied passengers. In addition, there are some very long treks from the ship to ground transportation. All of this information should be clear to people before they book the cruise. We felt that the paid excursions offered a much better experience than the included ones. With the price of a Viking cruise, we had hoped that some of the included excursions would be more interesting. We did not partake of any of the entertainment venues. We did listen to the guitar player in the upper level bar. We were bored out of our minds by the 10th day with his limited repertoire. We listened to the two-piece ensemble and were not impressed. We also did not use the spa or the "outdoor" pool. Well, no one used the outdoor pool; however, we did have 2 days of good weather and an open ceiling. We were surprised by the limited shopping on the ship, especially the Nordic store. I never saw anyone in the jewelry store except for our one day at sea. As for the library, that is a humorous label for the collection of books on the ship. Don't expect to find anything in a logical order by title, author or genre. Transportation to and from the airports was handled brilliantly on both ends. We will most likely do another Viking cruise in the near future. We truly had an elegant time in a casual atmosphere. This was our first cruise experience and we definitely feel we made the best choice with Viking. We couldn’t identify one thing about our cruise (and pre and post land tours) that wasn’t top rate. Every detail was perfect from the service, transfers, food, cabin and amenities. We were met at the airport by our Viking contact and taken immediately to our hotel in Oslo for a two day tour. We were then escorted on our train connection to Bergen to board the ship. After the cruise we stayed in London for a five day tour focusing on the life of Winston Churchill, which was great. Our hotel was centrally located and we were able to wash to all the sites in London- we even were able to check out the Brexit demonstrations. There were so many comfortable spaces on the ship, it felt like we were on our own personal cruise. There was never a line for any of the restaurants, the service was excellent and very friendly and personal- and the food was delicious and beautifully prepared. We enjoyed a variety of entertainment venues as well as taking advantage of the gym and spa- one of the best massages I’ve ever had. Every staff member on the ship from the top down was friendly and professional- many of the waiters knew our names from the first day. We enjoyed the included shore excursions in every port. There was plenty of time to explore on your own as well. We were so impressed that have already booked two more Viking cruises! Read Less

Absolutely the best service, food, entertainment, cabins at sea! Don’t miss the opportunity to cruise with Viking Ocean. When you arrive at the ship they come out and greet you with champagne instead of the normal long embarkation lines. All the cabins have a balcony there are no inside cabins. All the bathrooms have real glassed in showers, heated floors and no fog mirrors. There’s also a wonderful little makeup mirror that pops up out of the desk. Very nice! The entertainment is first class. They have more talent in the eight or so entertainers then other cruise ships have in their extravagant shows. Truly amazing talented young entertainers! The service is absolutely the best at sea. Everything is taken care of before you know you need or want it. The food is truly 5 stars. Everything this so fresh and cooked to perfection. I can’t say enough about this this great cruise line, everyone should give it a try. Read Less

We decided to cruise with family and friends this time around. This was our 2nd ocean cruise plus we already have been on two previous river cruises with Viking. Our 2 adult nephews and their wives joined us and since this was to be their first time cruising, we choose Viking to make it a memorable trip for them. In addition two of our long time friends joined us to make it a group of eight (their first time cruising with Viking). The trip was a resounding success. The kids had the time of their life, they enjoyed the varied excursions Viking provided and took full advantage of included and extra tours offered. Gym, spa and lounge areas were one of their favorite hangouts and the surprise Sunday brunch was definitely one of the many highlights of the cruise. The ship provided enough activities so each of us was able to take full advantage of multiple opportunities throughout the day when at sea. But the one thing that impressed everyone the most was how the Viking crew treated their guests. Their unfailing cheerfulness, and customer service above and beyond can't be beat. We were so delighted to know that we picked the right cruise for this family outing. Thank you Viking for making this cruise memorable for all of us. Read Less

The Viking Sun is ideal in every way. The ship’s design and furnishings are luxurious, while restrained. Definitely not over the top, like many cruise ships. With about 900 passengers it was easy to find quiet places on the ship whenever desired. We found service and dining to be excellent. The itinerary was excellent, though the weather was sometimes uncooperative. The west coast of Norway is beautiful as were the northern islands of Scotland. In general, included shore excursions were interesting and well organized. Predictably, Edinburgh was overrun with tourists which detracted from our experience. The on board lecturers were knowledgeable and interesting. The on board entertainment was the only area that wasn’t great. Considering the small size of the ship, this isn’t surprising. Check in was a breeze and embarkation in Bergen was very smooth. We spent an extra night in Bergen and enjoyed it. Our hotel was the Radisson Blu, which was in ideally located in Bergen’s historic harbor. Disembarkation in London was well organized, but our morning flight required that we meet for airport transportation at 3:30 AM! Short night. Read Less

We had heard nothing but great things about Viking from several friends so we decided to give it a try. Our expectations were met on almost every level. Our room was great and the amenities were well designed and maintained. The staff who took care of out room were great. Food was excellent - several levels above what we have experienced in other travel. We ate most of our meals at the pool bar and the buffet, although I heard nothing but good things about the other venues. The "Chef's Table" was interesting, but seemed more focused on process than cuisine - other folks loved it. Manfredi's was really outstanding both in terms of food and service. Brunch at the pool during our final sea day was absolutely spectacular. There were educational and entertainment activities, but we chose to focus on reading and hanging out in comfortable spaces on the upper decks. Given the cost of travel on Viking and relatively small number of passengers, I expected the tours - both included and extra cost - to feature smaller groups and richer itineraries. We have traveled extensively with National Geographic/Lindblad Expeditions and have come to expect early entry, meetings with key staff like museum specialists or directors and excursions focused on culture or nature that were a cut above marching around behind some guide with a flag. The excursion staff seemed poorly attuned with Norway weather. An open boat trip to "Troll Fjord" turned into a 2 hour trip in a small ferry with fogged up windows. We were notified of the change the night before, but not offered the opportunity to cancel and get our money back. Excursions need to be examined for improvement - especially the ones for which you pay extra. Embarkation and Debarkation were handled really well and the staff was very accommodating. The whole experience was as great as our friends had reported and we already have another Viking Ocean cruise booked. We both agreed that we could just live on the Viking Sun for an extended period because it was such a great place. Read Less

We wanted a Nordic cruise, and Viking offered an excellent itinerary with "Into the Midnight Sun." This cruise offers a great look at the coastal cities and fjords of Norway, with later stops at the Shetland and Orkney Islands and then Scotland and England. We added a three day trip to Oxford that included visits to Blenheim Palace and Highclere Castle (Downton Abbey) and loved it! The ship was beautifully laid out, and we enjoyed exploring it. Restaurants were excellent, and one favorite was Mamsens (for breakfast, and for trivia game days.) Having so many restaurants available kept things interesting, and there were many days where special items were offered...like a crab lunch special one day, a waffle breakfast buffet another. There were lots of activities to keep everyone occupied, and quiet spaces as well, if you just wanted to be out of your cabin, curled up in a comfy nook with a good book. The days at sea were so pleasant and relaxing! And of course there were amenities to enjoy like the spa, shopping in the gift shops, etc. We loved that there was no pressure to buy anything. We enjoyed many excursions, adding things like a family farm visit, the cable car ascent in Tromso, and the Shetland Pony Experience. Pretty much everything was very well organized, the buses were comfortable, and the guides knowledgeable. I liked the fact that the Viking cruises don't require fancy dress for dining (although there are definitely standards!), the guests are all adults, and there were lots of active people aboard. This may have had something to do with the specific cruise to Norway. We totally loved the experience, and would never want to go on another cruise line after being spoiled by Viking! Read Less

Very well run from embarkation to disembark experience. Check in was a breeze, no crowds. Someone took my luggage immediately and since I was early went to the World Cafe for lunch. Lots of servers and staff checking on you. My room was scheduled to be ready at 2pm but an announcement at 1:30pm said all rooms were ready! Room was fine, second level of stateroom. Only issue was not enough closet/drawers. Next level up does. have more drawers. State room attendant Mohammed Ali was great, very attentive and personable. Room was served 2 x day. He was a highlight for me. Always greeted you by name and cheerful. Soda and snacks replenished 1X a day. Was asked what type of soda we liked and it was quickly replaced to our preference. Plenty of room for wine or beer if you purchase some and want it chilled. Bath has a drawer for each guest and several shelves. Floor is heated:) Large shower with small bench and groove fixtures. Great water pressure. retractable clothes line to hang wet swimsuits. Mirror doesn't fog. Beds are OK not the most comfortable. Plenty of room underneath to store suitcases. Good size balcony with two chairs and a table large enough to eat off. While in room coffee make is nice, with 24 hour room service not needed. The design and decor is similar to the river longships, cheery and sleek. Really beautifully appointed and not garish like other cruise lines with bright colors all over. The atrium is 3 level with ample seating. The main floor has guest services, a bar, two restaurants. Bar prices are very favorable, $8 USD for a premium drink. Wine was $5 or $6 at off meal hours ( included with lunch and dinner). Little bar snack plates with savory pastries or nuts and wasabi peas at the bars. Main floor bar has cookies all day, pastries and open faced sandwiches during the day. Explorers bar at the bow of the ship on 7th floor has lots of large windows, comfortable seating. Mamsen's is also located here, open in early am then for snacks off and on. Custom Norwegian waffles are great. World Cafe is on the back of the 7th floor, excellent buffet style with wait service. Kitchen is in the middle of the area with buffet lines on either side. Food was always fresh and a variety. Pizza, main dishes, salad bar, sushi, deserts, gelato. Main dining room is gracious and changing menu. This is slower pace of service for all meals. 3 servers assigned to each table. Attentive. Manfredi's specialty was good, we could only get in once. Chef's Table was Ok, not a favorite. Fussy with wine pairings for each course. Set menu depending on what night you go. Pool bar and grill - excellent grill to order, fresh French fires and onion rings, burgers, fish and hot dogs plus a small salad bar. One night they had a Fish n Chips night, was really great with crispy fish and chips and all the fixings. Special brunch on the last sea day took up whole middle pool area, pool grill and Wintergarden area. Very elaborate and delicious. Grilled lobster and shrimp, steaks, pasta cooked in front of you, fruit, cheese table, bread table, dessert offerings ( they were cartelizing the tops of creme brûlée in front of you) Mimosas and Bloody Marys. Well staffed and tasty. Salt water pool at back of the boat is heated with a hot tub above. Lots of towels and a shower at either side of back of cafe. Spa area therapy pool was really great. Nice facilities. Gym has towels, water and enough equipment for the amount of users. Gift shop are nicely curated, no tacky offerings. Dale of Norway sweaters, Helly Hansen jackets, and some small sundries. Jewelry shop is pretty expensive but gorgeous stuff. Now for the staff - really attentive. The Senior officers and Captain are VERY visible and always around. I was impressed at the special meals that the General Manager, Chef and beverage managers were out and about not sitting in an office. Officers like Housekeeping Manager out and visible. Servers try hard and it shows. Attentive and if there is a lapse in service because they are busy they move quickly to rectify. All the shore excursions were well organized and the few times the tenders were used very efficient and constantly running so you don't have to wait. In several ports there were shuttles to and from town, free of charge if you wanted to spend more time to shop or have a meal. Busses were clean, good drivers and tour guides. Port Talks are on the TV in your room as well as the Daily schedule and restaurant menus and opening times. It never seemed crowded at all even though it was a full ship. I am very happy with experience. Read Less

This was a great cruise. We have been on Viking river boats but this was our first time on a Viking Ocean. The size of the ship was just right. It was big enough so they had good entertainment but small enough that you could move around without a problem. I could always find a seat for shows or meals. The staff from the cabin steward to the Captain of the ship were always friendly and available. We had a penthouse Veranda and were very pleased with the size and location. The Laundry was available on the hall and free. The onboard entertainment was good and we enjoyed the performers during the day as well as the shows at night. The ports that required a tender were few but it went fast and we didn't have long waits to load. The Viking app was very helpful and made easy to stay in touch with others in our party with its texting feature. We will definitely try another Viking Ocean soon! Read Less

This was our first Viking ocean cruise, but we did a river cruise with Viking before and loved it. The ocean cruise did not disappoint us!!! The ship was lovely, our cabin was too! We loved the balcony for wildlife watching along with the Explorer lounge bow. I really cannot say enough about ALL of the staff. They were extremely friendly and joy to visit with daily. We loved eating outside, so we ate at the World Cafe, almost every meal. The food was soooo good! The selection was incredible and the service delightful. Viking does a fantastic job of helping you immerse yourself in the culture and history of the ports you are visiting. They do this with the knowledgeable lecturers they have on board giving lectures and the tour guides in port. We also really enjoyed the wildlife expert they had on board. We learned a lot about the natural species of the area and had a great time wildlife watching with him. The ports on this itinerary were the reason for choosing this itinerary. It was a wonderful Scandinavian experience. We also did the pre extension in Oslo with the train to Bergen. What a fantastic trip! We also extended post in London. Even when you are not on the ship Viking does a great job of taking care of you on land. The hotels we stayed in were very nice and centrally located. The is made it easy to get around on foot and see the areas. We will definitely travel with Viking again! Our next big decision, is do we do an Ocean or River Cruise????? We have been home a while from our INTO THE MIDNIGHT SUN cruise on the VIKING SUN in June/July 2019 and it is past time for me to put in a review. This is our second cruise with Viking Ocean, we cruised on the Sea earlier this year in the Caribbean. We actually booked this cruise first and then added the Caribbean one on afterwards. We used Viking Air for this cruise and did well with it. We certainly didn’t have a big cost savings but the efficiency was worth it. Viking representatives met us when we arrived in Bergen and also assisted us to transportation when departing the ship in London. Ground transportation to the airport after the cruise was well handled getting us to Heathrow well in advance of our departure. The entire check-in process was quick and painless without the long lines that are normal for most of the cruises we have been on previously. We were a little early for going to our room, but since we had traveled all night, we hit an early lunch and then went to the room to unpack (yes, our luggage was there already) and a quick nap. Our room stewards, Ranger and Erik, were there introducing themselves and assisting us with any issues we had. Of course, there were no issues; this is Viking! On a sailing with many sea days, they work very hard to ensure they don’t impact guests in cabin time, but get cabins cleaned. Throughout the cruise, Ranger and Erik were wonderful, always helpful, smiling and efficient. They did an outstanding job of ensuring we had everything we needed! We introduced ourselves to Corinne Bach, the cruise director. Corinne was fairly new in the job and it showed, but she did a fine job. We also met Jasna Randelovic, the Beverage Manager, always someone good to know, and Norbert Tesar, the General Manager that first day onboard. We found Norbert to be the most approachable General/Hotel Manager with which we have ever sailed. Jasna and I hit it off and we spoke often, she is very personable and informative. The wait staff onboard the Viking Sun was very efficient and their service was outstanding. Yurii Semenov the Restaurant manager was always available and often pitched right in if the restaurant staff was busy. This cruise was a bit different from our previous one because there were a number of at-sea days. During these at-sea days, there were wonderful luncheon buffets set up in the area by the pool. The food was outstanding. But then again, the food on this ship in all the venues was outstanding and the service impeccable. The Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s (my husband’s favorite) are not to be missed and we took full advantage of both. One morning, we sat with a ‘difficult’ couple and they calmed down talking to us over a delightful breakfast in the restaurant. After that it seemed like the restaurant staff went even more out of their way to say hello and ensure we were extremely well taken care of. We did some of the included tours in Norway, Scotland and London. Most were bus tours, but they were interesting and the guides were wonderful and very knowledgeable. In many instances we had PhD students or equivalent telling us about the area. We also took many optional tours and loved all of them. My husband knocked many items off his bucket list during this cruise. The scenery on the tours and even just from the ship as we sailed the fjords and coastlines was amazing. We learned a great deal about the areas we visited. The onboard lecturers were excellent as well, and my husband made it a practice to go to as many as he could fit in between shore excursions. On the additional sea days, these were always well attended. Those that we missed in person were available on the TV shortly after they completed. We also had a festive “Blue Nose” ceremony onboard when we crossed the Arctic Circle; what fun. We enjoyed the various musical interludes onboard, particularly the choral group in Tromso. The entire staff from the Captain on down worked hard to ensure our trip was enjoyable. We had a wonderful time! Read Less

I took a chance and boy did it pay off. Fantastic shore excursions, biking, crabbing and visiting with locals in their home were real highlights. The sea days were great for the spa and hot tub. I actually found time to go to the fitness center. The food was out of this world. My wife likes poached eggs. One of the cooks realized this and had them ready for her every morning. We will not forget crossing the Arctic Circle, swimming in ice water, kissing a salmon and getting a blue nose. The only down side and nothing to do with Viking was the Airline canceling your outbound flight from Seattle to Newark. Another airline put us non stop to Amsterdam in Business Class. Sooo what started as a crisis end up a win. A Viking rep help us with the process. Every night the gelato bar was open with new flavors and unlimited scoops. We ate way too much but we only gained 10 pounds. The Cruise ending too soon. Read Less

We wanted to return to Norway and also to experience Viking Ocean Cruises after reading the wonderful reviews. This itinerary was a great combination of both new ports and return to favorite locations. This trip lived up to our expectations. We especially valued the "grown up" ambiance of Viking Ocean ships. There were many quiet locations to read or play games or even work on a jigsaw puzzle. We could find the peace and quiet we relish while at sea. After a number of cruises we are no longer interested in casinos, hordes of people, children running around, or the frenetic busy-ness of many cruise ships. Our cabin was very comfortable. We appreciated the balcony, even though some of the days were too chilly to sit outside. We were above the Arctic Circle, after all. But we loved the views even on the colder days. We did find that there was a little less storage space than on some ships. The bathroom was awesome. It was such a treat to have a full-size bathroom and shower area rather than the cramped cubicles on many ships. The service and attention to detail was exceptional throughout the ship. The staff was friendly and accommodating and did their jobs well. Even the public bathrooms were meticulously clean, and even had the sounds of bird song as a bonus. The entertainment and on-board activities were everything we needed. Great performers--nice "young" kids who were very friendly and approachable around the ship. I felt like I wanted to take them home with me. The greeting and service on arrival at the airport was wonderful. The staff went out of their way to take care of us and our baggage. Embarkation was easy and smooth, which we really appreciated after a very long flight. Our only complaint was probably regarding the dining rooms. We found the tables to be very close together which made it quite difficult for us to have a private conversation. Also the acoustics of the dining rooms were "loud." Sounds and conversations from other guests and the wait staff became very noisy and reverberated through the rooms because of all of the hard surfaces. We utilized the buffet most of the time because we found it to be more pleasant. The selection of food was varied and delicious. We now consider Viking Ocean to be our cruise line of choice and we would love to sail with them again. Read Less

My husband and I so enjoyed our Viking river cruise from Paris to Normandy last December, we decided to splurge on a 15 ocean adventure aboard the Viking Sun. We weren't disappointed! Accommodations, food, service, and tours were excellent. Ship was immaculate, and shows and other entertainment, fabulous. Ship's band and singers played an amazing variety of music for listening, and best of all, dancing! What can we say about the sensational food aboard the Viking Sun? OK...my husband's doctor just told him to lose the 10 pounds he gained on both the cruises. We really appreciated that (good) wine and beers were complimentary at lunch & supper. Yup, it was easy to over-indulge well-made food almost all day and well into the evening! Most interesting ports in northern Norway, Scotland, and London. Included tours were extremely good with wonderful, informative guides. We can hardly wait to be able to book another Viking cruise! Read Less

I especially enjoyed the Shetland and Orkney Islands. The Viking Sun was immaculate and had a soothing atmosphere. Our cabin was always spotless. The spa is fabulous. I enjoyed the lectures and port talks. While the few shows were excellent, I MISSED the nightly productions that the other cruise lines provide. The food was outstanding. We ate twice in Manfredi ‘s and thoroughly enjoyed it. The buffet is exceptional with its freshness and variety. The Restaurant was also excellent. We tried the Chef’s Table and just thought it was fair. Not sure we will try it on our next Viking cruise. I enjoyed the serenity of the entire ship. I did not miss children, a photographer, or casino. I don’t care about wine or beer but did enjoy cappuccino. More excursion times should be offered. Read Less

The cruise was FANTASTIC. Best cruise of our 17 cruises to date. The scenery was SPECTACULAR along the Norwegian Fjords. Visiting the northernmost point of Europe at 71 degrees north was a thrill. Visiting Scotland and London was equally as exciting. The Viking Sun is a VERY well managed ship. the crew was VERY friendly and professional. The ship was spotlessly clean and the food was well above our Viking expectations. The itinerary kept us constantly in awe of the beauty of the Norway coast and the British Isles. During the cruise we took 7 of our 9 tours as the included tours and felt like we saw everything and had wonderful experiences with very knowledgeable and friendly guides. Our two special tours were above and beyond for cities we have been to before (Edinburgh and London). But the regular tours were above expectations. While the first look at cost of traveling Viking appears to be higher than other cruise lines, you must take into account that you get (at no extra charge): and include tour in each port, Viking Air transport to/from airport, wine/beer with meals, specialty restaurants, soft drinks and cookies between meals, mini-bar snacks in our room, 4pm high tea, the spa, and lectures on the cultures and areas we were visiting and this was all with 5-star service and professionalism. Basically, it included EVERYTHING. Read Less

We chose this cruise specifically to experience the midnight sun, but unfortunately shortly after crossing the Arctic Circle the weather became an issue. Still we did experience twenty-four hour daylight which nevertheless was awesome. Sailing into the fjords was a marvellous experience. Visiting Bergen and seeing Bryggen Wharf was fascinating. The visit to Ovre Eide Farm was very worthwhile experiencing a snippet of Norwegian farm life. ...And the hospitality and Norwegian food was so tasty. Geiranger was very interesting, especially the drive to Eagles Bend Overlook travelling along eleven switchbacks and a magnificent view from this high location. Djupvatn Lake was refreshing still with unmelted ice and snow up on the slopes. Lofoten would have been more interesting had we had a native Norwegian guide who was more knowledgeable about the local area. Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral looked impressive from a distance and regret that a visit was omitted from the Panoramic Tour. The multi lane tunnel is an engineering achievement. Honningsvåg village looked charming from a distance. The drive to Nordkapp with the odd glimpse of reindeer was interesting. The Sami outpost had many interesting crafts for purchase. Getting right up to a reindeer and Sami herder was a delight. We regret not being able to take in optional tours due to conflicts. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it offered a chance to visit Russia and tour the Hermitage Museum. The ports of call were all very interesting and different. Some of the ports were former communist bloc cities, therefore eye opening as to their progress since the fall of Communism. The panoramic bus tours are not the best way to get a flavor of the ports but at least gave an overview of the destination. All the tour guides were very knowledgeable, fluent in English and most told anecdotes about their lives under communist rule. The staff aboard the Viking Sun was as exceptional as we had been told by previous travelers. Within two days we were recognized by name. The meal selections and dining rooms were excellent quality. The specialty restaurants were never completely full when we dined which allowed the staff and kitchen to keep up without rushing or delaying meals. We never felt crowded by the presence of the 900+ passengers thanks to the beautiful common areas which were spread around the ship allowing the guests to find a good view and a quiet space. The Explorer Lounge was a well kept secret since it was never crowded and offered great views from the front of the ship. The guest lecturers gave informative talks which were limited to 50 minutes. Our cruise started in Bergen, Norway and ended in Stockholm, Sweden. We flew in to Oslo a few days early and had time to explore that city as well as recover from jet lag. From there we did the "Norway in a Nutshell" tour on our own rather than join a group. I would highly recommend that you arrange for that, either on your own or take one of the organized tours. We stayed extra days in Stockholm on our own at the end of the trip to have more time for sightseeing.. Read Less

We did mostly eat at the World Cafe (amazing sushi and crab legs), we did also enjoy Manfrettis and the Restaurant a few times. We also did use room service. The food was wonderful. No complaints. I cannot eat gluten and I was completely taken care of. I felt safe and appreciated the extra care they went to. Our room was a delight. The bed was comfy and for us we felt spoiled with having the room cleaned twice a day. We were very glad that we chose to do a lot of our excursions with other companies. There were far fewer people and it cost less. Best example: Use All Tours in St. Petersberg. They were amazing. We also booked our own Rodne Tour for Pulpit Rock at less cost for the exact same trip. Because there were so many ports, in the end it was just a bit exhausting. If we do a cruise again, it would be one with fewer places to visit. We found every single person who worked at Viking to be friendly, helpful, and kind. If, like us, you do enjoy quality spirits, I strongly suggest purchasing a few bottles at the Stockholm Airport Duty free store. It was less expensive than at home and far cheaper than any other place we stopped. Read Less

I spent years researching how we could visit the Baltic taking a cruise. Viking came out the winner and we were not disapointed. Nelson looked after our well designed cabin so well and always welcomed us with a cheery smile. She was a lovely looking boat and you rarely felt crowded. The musicians were excellent and set a soothing tone. The feeding choices were varied if a little bland and the silver wine package could have had better wine choices. Some of the guides were rather patronising treating us like children when we are most definitely grown ups and some of the linkages when travelling failed. We did have some excellent local guides who gave us a real flavour of their countries. The ballet in St Petersburg was embarassment and we would all have paid a lot more to see a company that were of an acceptable standard. It was really sad that nearly all of the lectures were at times we could not go as we are European and eat later than our American friends. We really enjoyed dancing under the stars but were packed off to bed way too early. Read Less

We had taken a "Baltic cruise" in 2008 (on Princess cruise line) but wanted an opportunity to enjoy Norway prior to repeating a visit to the northern capitals. We are not disappointed at all, partly due to the smaller size of the boat (900), but also we did the pre-tour in Norway. We had the opportunity to revisit Oslo and particularly enjoyed the Vigelandparken. We then boarded a train to cross Norway to Bergen for a further 2 days. Also we had an opportunity to enjoy fjords, and other Norwegian ports prior to heading for the Baltic. The weather was excellent, with calm seas, warm temperatures and sunny days. The included short excursions were excellent. And the Viking hospitality on board was amazing as usual. The food was exceptional with highlights of reindeer, and tuna. We met with the chef who was Canadian and clearly thoughtful about portions size, and low-fat/sugar diets. We asked for low-fat yoghurt and it was delivered at the next port! This was our first trip on the Ocean cruise liner, and while excellent for certain destinations like this cruise, we still like the river cruises for most of our travels. We have enjoyed them previously with Viking in Egypt, Amsterdam to Budapest, and the Duore River. All highly recommended. Read Less

It's no wonder that Viking Ocean Cruises are rated so highly. They offer elegant, beautifully maintained mid-size ships with state of the art technology and valuable included amenities not offered on other cruise lines: free-wi-fi, wine with meals, excursions in every port and no extra charge for specialty restaurants. These all add tremendously to the value received. Plus, they cater to the over-55 crowd who don't care about casinos and abundant night-life. That said, the entertainment they offered was just right--a few very good music and dance productions and especially the piano and string musicians who accompanied happy hour each night in the Atrium! The cruise director gave a solo vocal performance that was just outstanding! They focus on the ports of call and offer very helpful port talks and lectures about the history and culture of the areas visited. The staff is wonderful and the food is exceptionally good--with very nice alternative dining options. Indeed, every aspect of the cruise was handled very thoughtfully and professionally. In so many ways, Viking provides just a wonderful cruise experience at a very reasonable price! Read Less

Our first cruise and we were not disappointed. We booked a penthouse veranda and the room was quiet, well designed, aesthetically pleasing and importantly with a comfortable well sized bed. The food, ambience staff and overall experience was 5*. Be aware that Viking promote and market heavily in the USA and a small number of American guests were loud and rude, especially in the select restaurants with little consideration for other diners. I really don't want to know about how Trump is doing a great job or hear a group of girls whooping while we're enjoying a quiet meal! However we also met some lovely guests and new friends from America, the UK, Australia and Canada and remain in contact. Disappointing that on the final night the boat is being cleared and cleaned ready for the next guests and you feel like you are in the way. The only other issue to be aware of is that although we had registered our Credit Card a small charge of $2.50 was picked up by the card company as suspicious when Viking tried to charge the account at 1am on the morning before leaving and we were not informed before departing. This resulted in me being held and escorted back to the service desk to resolve with my wife concerned, unaware and waiting on the transfer bus with other guests. This was highly embarrassing and could have been resolved if Viking had left a note in the room before we vacated the room. I informed customer service and although the team verbally apologised we received no written apology and again this is less than satisfactory given the cost of the cruise. No follow up from Viking whatsoever other than marketing emails. Read Less
