The cruise was FANTASTIC. Best cruise of our 17 cruises to date. The scenery was SPECTACULAR along the Norwegian Fjords. Visiting the northernmost point of Europe at 71 degrees north was a thrill. Visiting Scotland and London was equally as exciting. The Viking Sun is a VERY well managed ship. the crew was VERY friendly and professional. The ship was spotlessly clean and the food was well above our Viking expectations. The itinerary kept us constantly in awe of the beauty of the Norway coast and the British Isles. During the cruise we took 7 of our 9 tours as the included tours and felt like we saw everything and had wonderful experiences with very knowledgeable and friendly guides. Our two special tours were above and beyond for cities we have been to before (Edinburgh and London). But the regular tours were above expectations. While the first look at cost of traveling Viking appears to be higher than other cruise lines, you must take into account that you get (at no extra charge): and include tour in each port, Viking Air transport to/from airport, wine/beer with meals, specialty restaurants, soft drinks and cookies between meals, mini-bar snacks in our room, 4pm high tea, the spa, and lectures on the cultures and areas we were visiting and this was all with 5-star service and professionalism. Basically, it included EVERYTHING. Read Less

We did mostly eat at the World Cafe (amazing sushi and crab legs), we did also enjoy Manfrettis and the Restaurant a few times. We also did use room service. The food was wonderful. No complaints. I cannot eat gluten and I was completely taken care of. I felt safe and appreciated the extra care they went to. Our room was a delight. The bed was comfy and for us we felt spoiled with having the room cleaned twice a day. We were very glad that we chose to do a lot of our excursions with other companies. There were far fewer people and it cost less. Best example: Use All Tours in St. Petersberg. They were amazing. We also booked our own Rodne Tour for Pulpit Rock at less cost for the exact same trip. Because there were so many ports, in the end it was just a bit exhausting. If we do a cruise again, it would be one with fewer places to visit. We found every single person who worked at Viking to be friendly, helpful, and kind. If, like us, you do enjoy quality spirits, I strongly suggest purchasing a few bottles at the Stockholm Airport Duty free store. It was less expensive than at home and far cheaper than any other place we stopped. Read Less

We have gone on four river cruises with Viking, so we knew we'd have a high-calibre experience. However, this was our first ocean cruise. We've avoided ocean cruises because the idea of sailing with thousands of people on a behemoth of a ship held no appeal. But Viking's small ship experience is something completely different. No tendering in from a ship docked in open water, 5 minutes to disembark for even the most popular attractions, and no children. (Sorry, but now that we are empty-nesters, we want adult company when we travel.) The staterooms were excellent and the food exceptional. We paid for a penthouse veranda cabin (which got us free laundry and lots of space) but didn't go so far as to book a cabin with a separate sitting room. That turned out to be a good move: the sitting room cabins were really the same accommodation with a curtain separating the sleeping and sitting areas. The tours were excellent and varied. Every port included at least one free tour, but we found that the "included panorama tour" was often a bus tour with little chance to really explore - bite the bullet and do one of the special activities in every port. To be honest, we didn't take advantage of the nightly entertainment, preferring to socialize with fellow passengers or hit the hay. We chose the tour for the itinerary, never having been traveled through Scandinavia. Traveling in September meant we hit rain and cool weather in Finland and Norway, but even then the enrichment activities were well worth the time. Once out of Finland, the sun was with us for the rest of the trip. We took way too many clothes. Despite the advice to dress formally for the specialty restaurants, one nice pair of pants and a nice blouse or sweater is really all you need - and men didn't always wear jackets even in the nicest restaurants. Furthermore, if you are in a penthouse category stateroom, the laundromat is free so you don't need two weeks' worth of clothes (just don't plan to do your laundry when the ship is at sea for the whole day - everyone has the same idea!) As I said in the title, we had such a great experience that we booked 2 more cruises (Bergen-London and Barcelona-Venice) before we left the ship. There are some excellent perks offered for doing so and few penalties if you subsequently change your mind. We were glad to book early, as the ocean cruises seem to fill up very quickly. Read Less

Also a small ship cruise no more than 900 people We were very impressed with the attention to detail, the attitude of the staff their service was exemplary. The cruise director Bevin was so engaging and brought great talent to the ship. The variety of restaurants and the quality of food was without question outstanding and there was some food available all day and an afternoon tea was thrown in as well As is true with many excursion opportunities the experience is in the eye of the beholder. All included excursions very basic and usually a bus panoramic of the city. Anything more required an additional payment and that could add up quite quickly. thhecgym was well equipped and while I did not use the sauna or the snow room those who did were quite happy with it. We have travelled the world extensively but never been to Scandinavia or Russia so this looked like a good way to do a first experience in that part of the world. When we looked at the various options it seemed like Viking was the best for many reasons. First among those reasons was that it was a smaller ship which meant that everything was not so crowded with only 930 guests. All cabins were outside with balconies and from the internet pictures looked very comfortable and well appointed which they were. One of the features that particularly attracted us was the list of what they did not do or have since we were more interested in an expedition type cruise rather than a floating party. For example, they have no casinos and big entertainment. No passengers under 18. No umbrella drinks. No photographers. No nickel and dime treatment. No extra charge for different dining venues. No charge for wifi and the list goes on. The shore excursions were interesting and varied as well as being included for at least one in every port with other options which cost extra. They were all very well organized with smaller groups. Prior to any shore excursion there was a comprehensive briefing to supplement the hand-out information in their booklets. The crew were very accommodating, the entertainment good without being too elaborate and every aspect of the service was first class. Read Less

We are interested in this part of the world due to our heritage and were very excited to see all the delightful tour spots. We also met up with our high school foreign exchange student from 50 years ago in Bergen Norway. We loved every minute of the cruise and everything on board the ship was just perfect. You could not ask for better facilities. The food is just terrific in every way and delicious. From the more formal dining restaurants to the World Cafe, you always receive a fantastic meal. All the crew is top notch in every regard and always gave the most gracious service for any and every request. I love the way they remember your name. Our only regret is that we did not have more time in Berlin. I guess we are going to have to go back! The Soviet Flashback tour was a unique eyeopening and informational event as well as the most entertaining day. That was our favorite tour. We also were so fortunate to have dinner at the Captain's Table which was a real treat. And our cruise director Beven Addinsall was terrific! We also appreciated and feel so fortunate to have received the opportunity to upgrade our room just prior to the cruise. It really made a difference in our comfort level and total experience. We are looking forward to our next cruise to Egypt this September! Read Less

The time of year is perfect for us. The food was the best I've had on any cruise. Delicious soup. Sea food was outstanding: sushi, crab, shell fish, salmon, etc. And this was nightly fare on the 7th deck. The specialty restaurants are overrated. They tried too hard. Food was better in the main restaurant and the 7th floor. The Explorer Lounge was a treat at any time of day. High Tea was very satisfying. Ship size is perfect. Closest to Holland American than any other that line I've been on. Shore excursions were adequate. Guides were indifferent; some were good, only a few were outstanding, but the good ones were surperlative. But the excursions were uniformly satisfactory. Music was balanced. The trio improved the more they played together. Service was tops, rivaled only by the River Cruise in China. Superior to River Cruise oin Germany. Room service was punctual and complete. Laundry self-service was most convenient. Booked our next cruise while on board the Viking Sun. Read Less

This was our third Viking Cruise (second Ocean), and we have two more river cruises scheduled for 2019. In our opinion, Viking Cruises has always been at the top of our list. I'm not sure if they are experiencing growing pains, but.. Viking does a poor job at advising passengers that they are put in the back of the bus when it comes to booking amenities such as Optional Excursions, Included Excursions, Restaurants, and other Ship activities. If we had know that Class of Service was a direct tie to options, we would have never booked it. All of the optional tours were sold out when we were allowed to book them. All of the included tours were only available in the afternoon. Don't get me wrong, we were pretty excited to be able get the lowest fair available for this Cruise, but we paid a price for the options!!! To say the least, we were disappointed!!! Utilizing Viking Travel leaves a lot to be desired!!!! At one point, we were about to board our flight for our extended stay in Edinburgh. I'm not sure why, but we got stuck paying for our luggage at a tune of GBP 130. We were told by a Viking Customer Service Rep to refer to the "Fine Print". I sent a claim to Viking Customer Relations, but received a canned response that it will take 5 Business Days to review and respond. The entire staff on the ship exceeded our expectations. Overall, Viking has dropped a notch in our books from "Excellent" to "Very Good". Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and the cruise line. We have traveled on Viking River cruises but not their ocean line. We did the pre-extension in Iceland and then flew to Bergen, Norway to board the ship. The ship is beautiful. All of the crew were wonderful and helpful. Even though there were 900 guests on board, it was not crowded and just a fantastic experience. The cabin, which was a Verandah on the 6th floor, was perfectly planned. Lots of storage and easy to move around in. There were two, no reservation dining areas, and two reservation dining rooms. We chose to eat in the areas that did not require reservations. The staff was great and the food was plentiful and wonderful. We did a shore excursion in every port as we wanted to experience as much as we could. We truly enjoyed the ones out in the countryside versus the ones in the city. It was great that they offered excursions for folks with mobility issues as we met wonderful people that could not go on many of the excursions we went on but thoroughly enjoyed the simpler tours. The staff was simply amazing and we wanted for nothing. There was always a smile and a warm welcome. We will definitely take another Viking Ocean cruise. We thought that 14 nights would be too long. It was just perfect...We also loved the itinerary. The only negative is one of the excursions that we paid extra for was a huge disappointment. It was for bird watching and we were informed too late that all the sea birds were already gone at this time of year. Viking should have known that and informed us. That is our only complaint, other than the gym. IN a perfect world there would be a more varied schedule for classes other than 7:30am. A casino would be fun as well. Read Less

Unpacking once and being able to experience multiple ports of calls by simply stepping off the ship was wonderful. The food overall was delicious and we had many choices of cuisine and restaurants. . It was fun to taste the local cuisine at lunch and dinner in each port of call. The guides were so knowledgeable and having the Port talks and Q&As helped tremendously. It enabled the experience of the historical sites to be all we hoped they would be. The Cruise Director gave us little tops for each stop. My favorite spot Eidfjord,Norway, was beyond spectacular as we viewed it from our balcony at sunrise. It had been a life long dream to see the Fjords and it surpassed all of my expectations. The most wonderful part overall was the total relaxation on this beautiful luxurious ship. We chose this cruise because we wanted to experience Scandinavia and the other Baltic countries: Visiting the cities and countryside, enjoying local foods and spirits, understanding the culture and history, etc. Mission accomplished! The included excursions were insightful and hit the high spots. The train trip to Berlin, although long, helped us touch down in the past international events such as the Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, etc. And the tour guides were knowledgeable but also personable enough to add human dimension to facts. For instance, our guide to Berlin talked about his family being stuck in East Berlin after WWII, what that meant re communicating with family in the West, etc. But even more, the cruise itself was outstanding. The ship is beautiful! The officers and support staff were friendly, capable and eager to make our trip special. The food was exceptional, from The Restaurant and World Cafe to the Chef's Table and Manfridi's to afternoon tea. Our cabin was extremely comfortable and spacious enough that we could relax between outings, meals, port briefings and enjoying friends we met onboard. And the entertainment by the singers/dancers was some of the best we've had at sea with any cruise line. All in all, this was such a perfect trip that we (and many others) signed up for another cruise while onboard. Can't wait! Read Less

The ship had many nice areas in which to relax. The afternoon tea was lovely accompanied by a beautiful selection of sandwiches and sweets. There was a very nice spa and gym. Ship also had a sports deck and walking/running track. The staff did an incredible job getting 650 passengers off and onto a train to Berlin and returning. We were always greeted by staff upon return to ship. Water was always provided when leaving the ship for excursions. Very organized exit to excursions. So here is a (long) review of the Viking Sun Homelands cruise we just finished this week. I tried to break it all down as best I could. I would highly recommend anyone who would like this amazing experience to book it! Final views of Viking Homelands Cruise 1- We are aware that our joy about this holiday is influenced by the wonderful and unusual weather we experienced for the entire 32 days in Europe (except misty in Iceland and 50 F) (we spent 10 days in the U.K. with family). The temps were mid 70’s to high 80’s the whole time, with only one 5 minute rain shower in Stockholm. 2- Viking Sun. The ship is amazing. It is well laid out, and well decorated. The hard working staff is always cleaning and polishing. We enjoyed the pianist Olga, the string group, and Luis the guitarist being in different lounges each evening. The nightclub was fun each night and a great place to wind down. Iskra was the bartender who kept up with us- we had Silver Spirits drink package and it was nice to be able to experience different drinks whenever. (Rule of thumb- if you drink 2-3 liquor or upgraded wines per day, it is $$ worthwhile). 3- Stateroom. We had a Penthouse Veranda room- perfect size, lots of storage and drawers. Our cabin steward Fery and his assistant Jayson kept up with our every need. 4- Entertainment. We were very impressed with the quality of the evening entertainment. The cruise director, Bevin, and his assistant Matthew were everywhere! From morning excursions to port talks to evenings, they were always on point for what passengers needed. The entertainment in the theater included a magician, a comedian, and a singer that has played Jean Valjean in Les Mis in West End, so you know he is a powerful talent. The resident production team consisted of 4 highly talented and energetic performers who rocked the theater with a 69’s show, a musicals themed show and a Beatles/ABBA show (we WERE in Stockholm). They were also consistently visible and great ambassadors for the ship. There were other activities during the days and evenings- history and art lectures, team trivia, dance lessons, and more. 4- Food. We ate mostly at the World Cafe buffet- always great choices- sushi, crab legs, shrimp, Prime rib, mussels, tenderloin, oysters, whatever. The menus were posted on the online app so you could make your decision. We ate at the main restaurant a few times, the pool grill a few times, and Manfredi’s, the Italian specialty place once. It was fantastic. We didn’t get to the Chefs Table, the specialty restaurant with a set menu that changes every 2 or 3 days- the day we had reservations, Dennis wasn’t feeling very well- he caught a cold and was not up to it. 5- Shore excursions. We took mostly the included Viking and they were so well organized. Every stop had a free walking or bus tour, plus shuttles included if needed to get into and out of town. One of the best was the Berlin included- we thought we would be dumped on a train, dumped in Berlin, and then find our way back to the train on our own. Instead, the train was chartered and we had a local guy with us the whole time. When we got to Berlin, we were given an orientation bus tour for an hour before we were let off at a central square to wander on our own. After 2 hours or so, we met back at the square, and were bussed to the train. On the train back, we were served wine, beer and snacks, complimentary. It was much more than we expected for the free inclusion. We took 2 of the Viking paid excursions- Pulpit Rock and the Flam railroad. I would recommend both of those. We did a 2 day highlights tour with SPB tours in St Petersburg, which also gave us an evening out with “Go Out Like a Local”- we went to some trendy bars with a 30 something guide and then took an evening canal cruise- private boat- just 5 of us plus our guide, Russian rock music and a bottle of vodka. Skol! 6- a bit about each stop -Iceland. We did the pre-extension but Viking had us in a hotel too far from town. The Golden Circle was remarkable, with the plate tectonics going on, and the volcanic landscapes got the science geology nerd in me all happy. The Blue Lagoon was quite an experience as well -Bergen. Norway was on my bucket list and I understand why. The scenery all through Norway is breathtaking. Take the funicular up to the top of the mountain for great views. -Other 2 stops in Norway. Eidfjord has the Flam railroad which goes up and around the mountains and waterfalls. At Stavanger, we took the small boat out to look straight up those glacially formed cliffs. -Aalborg was just a few hours but another quaint medieval town. Copenhagen was a bit bigger and we took the walking tour and then a canal cruise. -Talinn Estonia- the history of that region is tough. The economy is struggling because of trade problems -Berlin- train and a chance to experience the history of a crazy man and his demented dreams and then how the Cold War took a toll on those in east Berlin. -Gdansk Poland. Another chunk of history. The ship was berthed at the spot where WW2 began. Sobering. Take a look at the Polish amber- it’s very beautiful -St Petersburg- this was actually my least favorite place, but a visit I wouldn’t have changed for anything. This is a huge city, crazy traffic, so many tourists, so much standing in line to get into all the important spots- Hermitage, Catherine’s Palace, Peterhof, Spilled Blood. -Helsinki- One of my favorite places. Very laid back, nice port town. Lots of green space and very nice people -Stockholm- Tied with Bergen for my favorite. This is a great city that doesn’t seem so big. Hop On Hop Off will get you anywhere you want to go. We stayed here a few extra days because there was so much to see here, and the cruise was ending. Vasa Museum, Abba Museum, IceBar- so much to see! All in all= I'm in the Viking cult! I have drunk the Koolaid and I'm all in. We have booked a river cruise for 2020. Hooray! Read Less

Loved all shore excursions and pre-cruise visit to Iceland. The ship was not overcrowded unlike other large cruise lines. So, we didn’t have to get in line for food, and we had no problem with making reservations for the restaurants of our choice. The buffet was always kept clean. Other cruise lines are too big for us and they offer too many different activities in which we have no interest. Optional excursions prices were reasonable. Viking offers privileged access to some attractions. For example, in St. Petersburg, we could get in Peterhof Palace before it opened for general public. Free shuttles were nice for exploring ports on your own time. We like Viking much better than others especially for the following reasons: No children under 18 (quieter and less mess) No charge for beer & wine at lunch & dinner No charge for alternative restaurants No charge for unlimited wifi No inside staterooms (all staterooms have verandas.) To select a Scandinavian cruise, I created a spreadsheet of the top cruise lines going to Scandinavia. Looking at price, ship size, itinerary and ratings it was easy to select Viking as our top choice. It helped that I took the Viking Normandy River Cruise last year and loved it! All restaurants were great...food ,staff and service were outstanding. We chose a penthouse jr. suite which was spacious and comfortable. The region in the Baltic was very beautiful and interesting. All of the countries in the itinerary were worthwhile to visit. It happened to be very hot this year in July with temperatures running in the high 80 ‘s to low 90’s in Germany and St. Petersburg. You should bear in mind that air conditioning is not common in Europe and people that can’t cope with the heat should consider this when choosing the time to take this cruise. One thing not to be missed is entering our final port, Stockholm, sailing through the Achipelago of small islands on the approach. We had not been to Scandanavia and were interested in seeing the fjords and other scenery. We liked the one-stop unpacking of a cruise so that was the logical choice fo;r our next vacation. We had great prior experiences with Viking, one a river cruise on the Danube and one an ocean on a sister ship to the Sun, from Venice to Istanbu. We were greeted by friendly reps at the airport followed by a quick trip to the port. The embarkation was as efficient as could be, particularly having pre-registered on line. On board the cabin and public amenities were great as we expected from the prior ocean cruise. We started out with sit down dining and then found that the World Cafe food was as good and also with more selections made that our usual stop. There were a good variety of shore excursions and in most ports we found an appropriate excursion without extra charges. They had helpful and friendly local guides so we had enjoyable and educational expeiences. Entertainment was very good and the three on board historians with their lectures were and added bonus. We decided to take another cruise (3rd) with Viking because our friends, who we met on our first Viking river cruise a few years ago, invited us to join them. We thought it would be interesting to compare the ocean cruise Viking had to offer to our two previous Viking river experiences and to other ocean cruises we had taken. The ship was gorgeous and comfortable. The staff onboard were attentive, pleasant and extremely professional. The dining rooms were all excellent. Manfredi's was the most desirable dining option (in our opinion) but in very high demand. It was difficult to secure a reservation to eat there once onboard. FYI, Viking grants those who have spent the most money on their cabin priority access to dining reservations and excursions. That may be the case with other cruise lines as well. Most of the dining was set up for couples. We travelled with friends, but saw a few couples who looked at our group longingly. They seemed interested in meeting new people but the dining room tables which are mostly set up for two people didn't facilitate that. We enjoyed our cruise but found that the included excursions were not anywhere near as impressive or enjoyable as those provided on the river cruises. Some of the extra excursions were disappointing as well. Overall, however, the beautiful ship and attentive staff made this an enjoyable trip. Read Less

I have always wanted to see the Fjords and I think the best way to do them is on a ship. But we had never cruised before as we didn’t fancy being on a large, glitzy ship. We saw Jane McDonalds programme on the Viking Sky and loved the decor. The vast majority of the passengers were American. Although I believe there were a few Brits on board, we never found them. The ship is beautifully light and spacious. It was easy to find quiet corners. The cabin was large and very well appointed, with an excellent shower room. The bed was extremely comfortable and the cabin was very quiet. The steward did a great job of cleaning. The restaurants were all excellent with a wide choice of menus. The staff throughout the ship were unfailingly friendly, helpful and professional. The optional (paid for) shore excursions were very expensive and not, in our opinion, good value for money. But I have one major complaint. The ship was freezing due to excessive air conditioning. For The first half of the cruise we had cold and very wet conditions and, having been on shore excursions and getting cold and wet, the last thing you want is to board a freezing cold ship. Even when the weather improved all the public areas were subject to blasts of extremely cold air. We complained to guest services, restaurant managers and anybody who would listen. All the passengers we chatted to agreed with us. Surely one doesn’t expect to have to wear outdoor jackets or warm sweaters in the restaurants? So, to sum up, a fabulous ship in every way apart from the temperature. It really spoiled our enjoyment. Read Less

My sister and I have always wanted to see where our ancestors came from, Sweden and Norway, and what a way to go! Viking was the absolute best choice we could have made for ourselves. We loved our cabin, loved the ship, loved the food - never got bored and wish the trip had lasted at least another week. It really was the trip of a lifetime and I don't know how we'll ever top it. Great service, nice people on board, stunning ship decor, a fantastic spa, no kids running around, no pushing and shoving or long lines. It was EVERYTHING I could have wished for in a cruise. If I HAD to change one thing it would be to add a couple of sea days into the itinerary as I would have liked to have spent more time relaxing on that gorgeous ship. We loved the shore excursions - even the ones that were included at no cost. Wonderful, wonderful, experience and highly recommend to anyone that is even thinking about VIKING. VIKING DOES IT RIGHT!
