Itinerary included both Norway &UK.which was just what we wanted. Lots of scenic cruising thru stunning landscapes. Cruise met all our expectations and more. Food was excellent with wonderful wait staff in dinning room and World cafe.Mamsens was a little hidden secret for breakfast. Our cabin was very well planned out with comfy beds. Great design features especially the bathroom with heated floors. Excursions, both included and optional worked for us-just the right length. We also did 3 Private tours so we could do more in our time ashore especially in Orkney,Tromso, and Edinburgh. Embankment and disembarkment went very smoothly as usual.Suitcases were delivered promptly. We liked the feel of a small ship and the friendly atmosphere. Decor was Scandinavian with lots of small places to read. Play cards or just visit with new friends. Would highly recommend this cruise to anyone wanting a relaxing cruise but with lots to see and do.Fjords, waterfalls, small fishing villages, tundra, wildlife, seafood and Sami people. Read Less

My wife wanted to see Norway, and I wanted to see Scotland; and we were both blown away with the natural beauty of both countries! There was not enough time to see and do everything, and that includes our time on the ship. Our Penthouse Veranda was soenjoyable and well featured. We were on the Viking Star 1 1/2 years ago, but we were still in awe of all the amenities on the Sea. We just didn't have enough time in the days to completely enjoy all that the ship offered: the shows, the entertainment, the talks, the tea times, the pools and spa! Our son-in-law had said he had the best steak he had ever had; when we were on the Star. But, we now agree that the food was just spectacular in the specialty restaurants, the main dining restaurant and even with the buffet! We had escargot and outstanding seafood even in the buffet! We ate so well, that some nights we had to just eat appetizers or only the seafood in the buffet. My wife also commented on how happy and courteous the staff were. She said she had counted a number of them singing to themselves. They sure made us feel at home andcomfortable whenever we met them around the ship. Now for excursions and sights. I really appreciated Norway and Scotland for their breath-taking natural beauty; as well as for their countrymen. They were excited and appreciative for us to visit their countries and know about their history and current situations. We, as Americans, could learn a lot from them concerning their environment, use of sustainable energy resources, and how they care for their young families, mothers and children. We met many fellow travelers on board, including a number from "down-under." We all talked, ate and shared our experiences over the 2 weeks; and this really contributed to a well memorable time! A cruise to the midnight sun took us to many scenic destinations in Norway and included the Orkney and Shetland islands and Edinburgh, Scotland. The ship was exquisite not only because it was new but was furnished with quality items. There was no difficulty in finding a relaxing spot to read even while at sea. Though the laundry machines were free, there was little difficulty in finding them available for use. The lectures was engaging and enlightening. The included tours generally sufficed for most ports so that extra cost trips were unnecessary. The crew were all courteous and provided prompt and attentive service. The quality of food and wine was upscale though you can purchase more expensive wines. From the café, to the buffet, the main dining and specialty dining the food was tastefully prepared using fresh ingredients. Need I say more to get you interested in a Viking ocean cruise? Read Less

From the moment Viking met us at the airport to the moment they dropped us off, we felt like we were the most important couple on the ship, even though we had the least expensive cabin. The bartender remembered our names after the first night as well as our preferences. The waiters remembered my food allergy. The disembarkation staff allowed us off the ship early when we had a personal shore excursion. The food at the Chef's Table (included in the fare) was out-of-this-world! The "buffet" at breakfast was cooked when ordered, not sitting on hot pans waiting for takers. Wine and beer were included at lunch and dinner, but mixed drinks and single malts and bourbons were very reasonable. There was NO nickel * diming, no sales pitches for stores or pop-up boutiques. We did purchase another cruise while onboard and saved over $1000 compared to the prices I had checked before sailing. The entire voyage was relaxing yet intriguing. Ted Talks were always available on tv and in the theatres. There were 3 resident historians onboard who lectured every day - very, very interesting. Each ha his own area of expertise. The port talks the night before the next port were not centered on where to shop. They were centered on the history and culture of the port. What food you might want to try, the not-to-be-missed sights and experiences and things the area was noted for were all discussed. Disembarkation and embarkation at each port went very smoothly with no waiting in lines or standing on stairs in crowds. Water bottles were provided every time we left the ship. The room steward was outstanding in anticipating our every wish and coming up with surporises of his own.l The spa was the best of all the ships I have traveled, and the cost was incuded in the fare. The Viking Ocean ships are not flashy. The decoration is peaceful and based on the history of a famous tapestry on the Sea. The library was the best - I found a terrific new release book I had been wanting to read and left one of my own. Afternoon tea was always fun the beautiful wintrgarden. Above all, the ship never, ever felt crowded. There was always a seat to be found at the pool, in the game room, in the atrium or in the explorer's lounge. It was the best ocean cruise we have ever done, and we've done about 20. Read Less

I had great experiences on Viking river cruises, and expected no less on Viking's ocean cruise. My expectations were more than met. The ship is luxury from stem to stern. The dining experiences were something we looked forward to each day. We tried to meet new people at each meal but quickly made friends and began sharing our meals with them. The excursions were enjoyable and educational. Saint Petersburg will remain in our memories as the jewel of Russia. The entertainment both on the ship and on the excursions, was wonderful. I videoed some of it and posted it on Facebook when I got home. The cabin was everything I expected and more. I felt right at home with all the amenities, including the complimentary service bar. The attendant customized the contents to my requests. The wifi connection was good most of the time, a little iffy at sea. We toured the bridge and were impressed with the technology. It was like a set from Star Trek. Read Less

We love to travel on Viking. Service is the tops! Staff works hard to attend to every need of each and every client (especially when one in our group became sick). We have taken a river boat cruise and then an ocean cruise. The river boats offer an intimate environment and close proximity to small towns that you can explore on your own. The ocean cruise has far more to offer on ship, but is not at all over-sized and impersonal as the large ships run by other cruise lines. Both were absolutely wonderful. We were impressed by every detail they The food on the cruises were exceptional. We loved the fact that the chefs worked hard at creating dishes from the areas that we were visiting, so we never felt that we were missing out by not eating on shore. In fact, one night we ate at a local restaurant in town. We were so disappointed that we came back to the ship and had more to eat there! Currently, we have scheduled another Viking ocean cruise. We would not consider any other cruise line! Read Less

We loved the Itinerary, Athens to Venice. Former Yugoslavia was a huge surprise and can't wait to go back. Had cruised with Viking on the Rhein river in the past & were not sure about a much bigger ship. Every part of the cruise was exceptional. It's difficult to say which stop was our favorite because each was unique & enjoyable. We don't think anything could have been improved. Very glad we extended our stay at the end in Venice. We had been there twice before but always fine new sights & places to visit. There is always a restaurant that we haven't tried. We had no problems with embarking & disembarking and each shore excursion was informative and well worth the time. Some of the older passengers needed a rest stop sooner than the others. We often tell others what a great value Viking cruises are & highly recommend them. Read Less

Second ocean cruise with Viking and it was, again, an over the top wonderful experience. We had the least expensive room available and it served us well. No noise, no problem getting on to the excursions we wanted or dining at the two specialty restaurants on board. With wine and beer available at lunch and dinner we did not choose the additional beverage package. We are not wine snobs and can't drink that much after dinner. Viking does not gouge you at their bars. Our trip started with a near 3 hour delay out of the US to Heathrow causing us to miss our Heathrow to Bergen connection. When we finally got to Heathrow a Viking rep was there as we deplaned to direct us to our new flights. We were rebooked by the time we landed. That is service! Food was magnificent. We often had dinner at The Restaurant as after site seeing we were happy to have someone wait in us. The food there was wonderful. The two specialty restaurants, Manfredi's and the Chef's Table were spectacular. Viking's service is just impeccable and their attention to detail is amazing. This starts at the cabin attendants and goes right up to the ship's captain. Every waiter, wine steward, bar tender or spa attendant is there with a smile to provide world class client service. The onboard entertainment was fine. After a ful day of touring and eating great meals I am fine with a brief show that ends by 10 or 11. The on board entertainers did a Rat Pack show, a Beatles show and a Abba show. It was fine. Again, no one on these types of cruises is there to see a Hollywood or Broadway production or to drink and dance until 3am. If that is what you are looking for, don't look here! Our tour guides were universally excellent. We loved Copenhagen, Gdansk, Aalborg, Tallin and Stockholm. Bergen and the stops in other Norway cities were great. We were disappointed in Helsinki (seemed like any smallish American city) and St. Petersburg (dark and depressing) but the guides were excellent. We have more trips with Viking planned. I have no reason to cruise with any other company. We extended to Iceland with Viking and had a great itinerary and guide there. Nobody does it better than Viking! Read Less

We particularly liked the walking tours in Stavanger, Tallinn, and Bergen. They were very informative and enjoyable. The food choices were amazing as were the restaurants on board. It was very nice to have wine and beer included with the meals. The weather was nice enough to eat out on deck a few times. The glass windows afforded spectacular views from the different restaurants. The entertainment was wonderful! The entertainers were very accomplished and we really enjoyed the musicals. I had two massages while on board and enjoyed them immensely. We were surprised while dining at Manfredi's with a special cake for our anniversary. We really enjoyed Manfredi's, love Italian! The World Cafe had a fabulous buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The entire cruise was tremendously enjoyable and therefore we signed up for two more ocean cruises. Read Less

The food was suburb, entertainment was exceptional. All of our requests were taken care of by the staff. This was a pleasant quiet cruise. As young seniors we appreciated the fact that there were no children on board. Viking is an all inclusive cruising line so the incidentals are all included. No need to worry about the cost o something extra. The ports of call were all that we had hoped for. The Berlin Germany excursion was a long day but well worth it. We also tried the ice bar in Finland, a one of a kind experience. We would encourage others to take the excursions that you would like as it is a once in a lifetime experience. Read Less

We had a wonderful first cruise experience when we travelled the Rhine with Viking a few years ago. We decided then that Viking was our choice for future cruises. When they offered "Viking Homelands," we knew that was a cruise not to miss! This ship is beautiful, very clean, and well appointed. Our cabin was very comfortable and equipped with everything we needed. (Especially loved the heated bathroom floors.) Our cabin stewards were friendly, efficient, and provided excellent service. We didn't take advantage of the on-board sauna, but did enjoy the walking deck every day. Shopping aboard was fun--very good quality merchandise as well as local items were available. Food on this ship was never disappointing. There were so many dining choices--with restaurants and also smaller cafes. The Restaurant always had a lot of delicious options, with many choices of vegan, gluten-free, etc. foods. We especially enjoyed dining at Manfredi's. Also, we were pleased to learn that Viking supports many local vendors, assuring the freshness of the ship's food supply. We enjoyed wonderful entertainment in the Atrium (the trio, guitarist, and pianist) as well as live entertainment on stage in the theater. We chose a variety of interesting shore excursions from easy to moderate, and we very much enjoyed our local guides in every port. Our bus drivers were always excellent and extremely patient. We continue to be very pleased with Viking and have already booked our next cruise!! Read Less

This cruise included stops in all the Scandinavian countries we had long wished to visit and experience. The stops in each of the eight countries we visited were all organized in such a way as to insure maximum coverage of the major highlights for the areas, supplemented by additional optional trips that enabled us to spend as much time as possible each day exploring the sites visited. On board ship, the dining experiences were consistently superb and each member of the staff and crew that we encountered were genuinely pleased to be employed by Viking and went out of their way to provide helpful, friendly service and assistance in every way possible. This was our twelfth cruise with Viking (ten riverboat and two ocean cruises), each of which has been equally fulfilling and enjoyable. We have already booked our thirteenth cruise with Viking (Egypt, on Viking's newest riverboat) and are very excited and anxious to explore the wealth of historical culture that Egypt provides. The meal options were superb, ranging from cuisine in the World Cafe (buffet style), Italian, the Chef's Table, and breakfast and lunch bars. Our room was comfortable, with a veranda to sit outside. Room maintenance was exceptional. All public parts of the ship were in perfect order and cleanliness at all times. What a perfect way to see the ports and Fjord stops throughout Scandinavia and the Baltic. We traveled primarily at night (except for 1 day at sea), and had a full day or more at each Port. There were many choices for itineraries at each stop. Each offered a comprehensive overview of the culture and significant sites at each stop. This was our first Viking tour, and we are excited to book our next trip. Friends have told many good things about their experiences with Viking (on sea and rivers). Room service 24 hours a day was nice although we only used it one time. Free drinks and snacks in our room was great for middle of the day snacking. The spa was wonderful but didn't stay open late enough to enjoy after the evening meal. The ship wasn't crowded and it was easy to move from one area to another. The free excursions was another selling point for us. We enjoyed all of them and never felt that we didn't see enough of the various ports. After great experiences on Viking River cruises, I trusted that a Viking Ocean cruise of the Baltic would be the best way to cruise the Baltic. I was right. Yes, the Viking Star was larger than a Viking longship; however, the way it's configured gives you a sense of intimacy that the really large ships lack. The spaces are comfortable and inviting, especially during the serving of afternoon tea. The food choices are also many and varied. The designers of the cabins thought of everything from plenty of storage space to bathrooms full of conveniences such as cabinet space and a decent sized shower. Getting off and on the ship was also easier than on the really large ships. Viking is so organized, right down to the staff that unloaded our luggage at the airport, took it inside, and stayed with us to ensure that our check-in went as promised. We did the pre-trip to Stockholm, where Viking placed us in a lovely and convenient hotel with lobby service staffed by Viking to attend to our touring needs. I highly recommend the Viking Homelands cruise and the Viking Star! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and because we cruised on their river cruises and were excited when Viking went to Ocean cruises and we were not disappointed. From the easy embarkation to the end everything was top shelf in our opinion. Our bags were in our stateroom before we were and our cabin girl introduced herself and showed us the room. We were happy to find a cruise line with all rooms having decks, no casinos, no children and only 930 passengers. We have do large ships and kids cruises but at this point in our lives we don't want all that. The service was excellent from our room steward to the waiters and people getting us on and off the ship each day all were great. Being a small ship allowed us good docking areas and the Viking buses were waiting for our included tours at each port. Viking is very port intensive so only one day at sea but we enjoyed the Swedish spa especially the salt water bubbly pool, steam room, snow grotto and clean changing rooms with an attendant for any questions. Shows were nice but more low key then on bigger ships but the entertainment was top notch. Food was very good and I liked that for the buffet the crew gave you the food for most of it so no worries about someone picking it up and putting it back. All in all a wonderful cruise and can't wait for our next one with Viking. Read Less

Loved visiting all the Baltic States and Russia. The food was delicious and the excursions were very informative. The weather was beautiful and warmer than I expected. The food was a big concern for me because I have a serious allergy. However, the dining staff was very good in trying to find something I liked without adding wine to my dishes. Since I can't drink wine or consume anything containing sulfites I felt that I should have been offered cocktails because others could have all the wine they wanted. Our cabin staff was excellent and were very cordial and tried to do more than what was expected of them. The entertainment on board was exceptional and we enjoyed many nights dancing until the club closed its doors. The three best things about this cruise for me were the staff, the onboard facilities and the furnishing and fittings of the ship. But there was nothing that was less than excellent. The staff bent over backwards to make sure our holiday experience was as good as possible - nothing was ever too much trouble. Best of all was our lovely cabin steward Ayu. The staff were friendly, smiling and helpful. The Nordic sauna and swimming pools (one outdoor) were lovely and everything was immaculate, not a speck of dirt or dust anywhere. Meals were wonderful as well, with a huge choice of dishes, always including some local specialities. The excursions were well organized, enjoyable and informative. There was a wide variety of entertainment onboard as well, including a splendid professional pianist. I'd do this trip again without hesitation. This cruise was recommended by German friends we met in China! The embarkation went as planned. We were greeted by very cheerful staff and conducted to our cabin. A self tour around the ship made us feel very comfortable. The initial safety drill and following daily information briefings kept us very well informed of the days' activities. We enjoyed watching the activity on the dock whenever the ship arrived in port. The days when an excursion was available were very well organised. The excursions available catered for a range of abilities and interests. The local guides on those we took were always helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. At first we thought our later evening dining time would be difficult but we soon became accustomed to the time and it was pleasantly enjoyable. Being from Australia where snow is not common, we were overjoyed to have one snowing day - in Alesund. We had come prepared for cold so that was no problem, especially as the ship was toasty warm. Our highlights were to see the North Cape in brilliant sunshine, blue sky and sparkling snow and then to stand out on deck at night, marvelling at the spectacle of the Northern Lights. Read Less

This cruise was suggested to me by my friend who is a travel agent. In Bergen we embarked the ship. Boarding was OK, but when we got to the room - it was disaster! (There had been a problem with perhaps a broken pipe or something, the floor was saturated - there were towels and mats all saturated. So, we did not get that room. (You would have thought that the booking reception would have been informed). However, a lovely Swedish lady came to our aid. She was just lovely. She took us to the other side of the ship (not port side) and we were so glad that she did that. The noise on portside was loud, particularly when docking and loading and then on leaving at each port. However, at each port there was unloading and loading of cargo and people. This shipping company has to walk a fine line between pleasing passengers and being a vital link to the communities that are far from major cities. At night we would see tiny villages dotted along the coast. Hugging the shorelines as it is usually fishing that keeps these communities economically above water. It isn't New York. There is no other trade or anything else that could be done in some of these areas along the water line. Very little land. Although you would see the very rare farming areas. This shipping company does a wonderful work and is extremely vital to keep these villages alive and supplied. I praise them for their work. It is not a good thing to work in the extreme cold and water and rain/snow and wind. It is not pleasant. However, without this shipping line - life would come to a very quick and sticky end. So, with that in mind, ((to those that grumble about this shipping line) - this is NOT the Queen Mary 2 ship. It is not meant to be. I believe the company that owns this line should be supported and recognised for trying to please the passengers and the communities, the companies that rely on this shipping line - and of course the staff they employ. What a wonderful staff of people. They are out to please you. Even the Captain signed books and certificates, etc. (Might I say what a dashing gentleman he is!). Then there was Anna (the Swedish lady) who is in charge of the passenger's welfare (accommodation etc). She is a star. Always time for helping, always pleasant, There are the shop staff who are wonderful too. The restaurant staff (the meals were excellent), the mechanical engineers, the loaders, the staff supporting others. All just wonderful. No - we did not see the Northern lights (although there was a very faint hint of a run one evening just before we were to disembark). This was disappointing to my travel agent friend, but not particularly to me as I lived in Northern B.C. Canada and saw the lights every winter. Some seasons more beautiful then others. Just before closing my comment, I wish to say to people who intend to go on this ship. Remember it is not a cruise line. It is a passenger ship. Entirely different. So, if you want to sit back and not move a muscle or lie in the sun on the deck or be waited on hand and foot try Queen Mary 2! However, if you seek an adventure and are interested in Norway and the Fjords and small villages - this is the ship for you. Please support the villages that you may visit. Buy their goods. At least show some interest in their talents. They are all trying to make a living from tourism. They are very welcoming, warm and generous. Yes, I would go again, just to see all again what I saw the first time. Thank you to the Nordlys Hurtigruten. Read Less

My wife reluctantly agreed to this cruise. She worries about sea sickness and hates being cold! No problem. Apart from one night which was slightly rough for about 3 hours, the rest of the trip was virtually like a mill pond. Apart from being out on deck, the ship was warm enough for shirt sleeves and the cabin heating controls worked extremely well. We booked the inclusive package with Hurtigruten, which included flights from Gatwick to Bergen. The charter airline "Germania", was spot on both ways and although they don't operate a scheduled flight from the UK, if they should do so in the future, Easy Jet beware! We choose a mini suite, on the "Richard With", which was well worth the extra money. This included a wine/water package for one person, which we found perfectly adequate. The alternative was to buy a bottle of wine, the cheapest being approx.,£45. We did buy some in port for use in the cabin, which was a lot cheaper. Yes, these are commercial ships, but the passenger accommodation and food was just like any other cruise. Plenty of variation, especially fish. My only complaint was that the hot food, could have been hotter. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. There is no entertainment, but we knew this before we went. My wife by the 4th day said she had never felt so relaxed! Just sitting in the observation lounge watching the spectacular scenery go by, was very therapeutic. We saw the northern lights 3 times (which is why I wanted to do this cruise) and although they were not as spectacular as you see in some photos, (they are the best) they were well worth the trip. Apart from walking around the port towns en route, we only did the Ice Hotel and dog sleigh excursion. Unfortunately, due the lack of heavy snow, they ice hotel was not built, but there was snow and the dog sledge ride was a wonderful experience. Overall a marvellous trip. Stunning scenery, good accommodation and food, and I would recommend it to anyone! Read Less

All the cooks, service folks and the managers are very accommodating. We had a great time. The shows were great, very entertaining. The program manager, Aarean, is great. Port Talk is very helpful. He was doing a great job. Internet was slow. Need some improvement. The included excursion could have a little more "substance". The ship, Viking Star, is beautiful, state of the art. We enjoyed the pool, the sauna, the steam room very much. The Nordic room was too cold for us. The room was spacious. Bath room is very roomy and very clean. Mohumad kept the room and the bath room very clean. He was doing a great job. Overall, we love it. We have booked 2017 already. Read Less

WE cruised the Norwegian fjords a few years ago in late November in ice and snow with the Norwegian company - Hurtigruten and enjoyed it so much we planned another visit! This time we chose the Autumnal season. Not quite as stunning as the winter season but still deserving the title The Most Beautiful Cruise in the World. A photographers paradise. Marvellous light and skies. Nordnorge was very comfortable - albeit one of the lifts was out of order the entire trip. The Expedition and Information Team were simply brilliant - delightful people and always on the go and smiling, although their job must be tiring. Excellent tours and trips at various ports and destinations. Ah - yes - don't miss the Crossing the Arctic Circle Ceremony on deck. Comfortable beds in the small cabins. (This is not a large liner). Restaurant excellent. Only one niggle - the coffee and tea making machines are simply ghastly. Costa or Starbucks need to get in there. Great holiday! Read Less
