Great cruise line. Awesome ship and service. One of the best designed ships we have ever been on. Wraparound Promenade deck. Thermal spa outfitted with more different treatment areas (whirlpools, snow room, dry sauna, steam room, etc). Great fitness room. Most rooms between the common areas on decks 1-2-7-8 limiting how many stairs to traverse to get between rooms and common areas. Ship had no feeling of crowding anywhere. Common services desks designed to address client needs. Ship was largely digital meaning that many things could be accomplished through television set in the stateroom. Service was exemplary in every way. Wait times throughout the ship were short or non-existent. Service was highly anticipatory. All administrative activities including embarkation and debarkation, as well as port visits were professionally and efficiently handled. Very good food, using fresh, high quality ingredients. Food was well prepared and tasty. Special requests were handled by the culinary staff with aplomb. World Cafe had most items of the Restaurant + some additional surprises. Mamsen's deli was okay, but the Pool Grill was outstanding. Both Manfredi's and Chef's Table were very good. Could have offered more traditional desserts. On-board activities, while not lacking, could have been more robust. Afternoon tea was great featuring more than 12 types of tea. Enrichment lectures were good also and were recorded for later viewing in the staterooms. No casino or bingo which was a plus. Read Less

This is our first cruise with Viking and we are converts! We have cruised with most other lines and while we don't consider ourselves "cruise people", we do end up taking a fair amount of cruises. We really enjoyed the low key luxury decor of the ship. I read an interview with the CEO of Viking and he described his line as "the thinking man's cruise rather than the drinking man's cruise." I think that this sums it up perfectly. The library on the ship was amazingly well thought out and the educational presentations were outstanding. We also were blown away by the thoughtful touches on the ship - like a free laundry room on each floor. A special shout out goes to all of the staff - they were so helpful and friendly. I never felt like they were chiseling for tips. Truly, Viking felt like a Four Seasons Hotel at sea. We will definitely be back. Read Less

We wanted to start with an ocean cruise that brought us to countries we had not been too before. Norway was amazing and the stops we made along the start of this trip were truly memorable. We did do some of the "optional" tours along the way and some of the "included" tours were also quite good! The restaurant experiences (food, seating, service, etc) were quite an experience, as everyone seemed to want two help and be a part of our experience! The Fitness Center was perfect, never too crowded and my wife's facial and both our massages were among the best ever! Our room was very comfortable and the staff (Clark and Ameline) were great as far as extra water, coffee, etc. Enjoyed the Explorers Lounge as it was close to our room and got us out and relaxing a bit! There was only one thing that I would not do again...the Malmouse Castle was boring (Baron ?) and we unfortunately had a couple from New York, who seemed to know more than the "Baron" and constantly interrupted his long-winded description of the "castle". The soup was not that great and the organic beer was less than enjoyable! Now, overall, this experience did nothing to dampen the great time we had as we enjoyed everything else on our trip and have booked the Ageatic Cruise for next year and have no qualms about going and enjoying! Thank you! Read Less

This was our first cruise experience and we definitely feel we made the best choice with Viking. We couldn’t identify one thing about our cruise (and pre and post land tours) that wasn’t top rate. Every detail was perfect from the service, transfers, food, cabin and amenities. We were met at the airport by our Viking contact and taken immediately to our hotel in Oslo for a two day tour. We were then escorted on our train connection to Bergen to board the ship. After the cruise we stayed in London for a five day tour focusing on the life of Winston Churchill, which was great. Our hotel was centrally located and we were able to wash to all the sites in London- we even were able to check out the Brexit demonstrations. There were so many comfortable spaces on the ship, it felt like we were on our own personal cruise. There was never a line for any of the restaurants, the service was excellent and very friendly and personal- and the food was delicious and beautifully prepared. We enjoyed a variety of entertainment venues as well as taking advantage of the gym and spa- one of the best massages I’ve ever had. Every staff member on the ship from the top down was friendly and professional- many of the waiters knew our names from the first day. We enjoyed the included shore excursions in every port. There was plenty of time to explore on your own as well. We were so impressed that have already booked two more Viking cruises! Read Less

My wife and I have cruised many times in the past. we usually cruise with some friends who decided that we all should cruise the Baltic for our annual cruise in 2019. They chose Viking Ocean cruises, due in no small part to the excellent reputation of which they had read and the fact that what could be better than to take a Scandinavian ship to cruise the Baltic. At the outset, we were shocked to find that the entire cruise needed to be paid at least one year before the cruise. That has never been our experience in sailing with multiple lines and future patrons need to be aware of this requirement. The ship is beautiful. The public rooms are wonderful especially the Explorer Lounge. Our cabin was quite roomy and the bathrooms excellent. special kudos for a lovely shower without having to step over a tub.I found the heated floors in the bathroom to be a nice touch. The spa area is spectacular and if going to a spa with virtually everything-hot tub, small therapy pool, sauna and ice room is your thing, this is your ship The company touts its multiple channels of communication available to those who are scheduled, but that is primarily limited to receiving one way announcements from them, done well, but not to any dialogue or getting personal support for questions which arise and may not be answered in their stock announcements.Poor communication seems to be common on these cruises. For example, special meals opportunities, lobster tail and steak, special buffets, at the grill were never announced well and one learned to look for these each day by dropping by the grill itself or asking of the crew in a restaurant or bar. The ships plan is good but when the special meals take place in the grill area there is inadequate seating for the number of cruisers wishing to partake in the meal. The seating in the cinema is wholly inadequate for the number of passengers. Quite a few performances occurred with many passengers standing in the back to observe the show. The back two side areas were totally inadequate both for seeing the show and hearing it.The need to get to the venue 30 minutes before shows began was difficult for those of us who tended to to eat dinner at about 7 to 7:30. I was quite disappointed to discover that we did not receive services comparable to what we had received ion either Oceania or Azamara in spite of the fact that the per night per person cost to sail with Viking was considerably more than either of the other two. My concern with the cabin service is that when I wished ice, I had to go to housekeeping, when I wished lime I had to go to room service and when I wished to change my complimentary liquor and the amount of tonic I needed to speak to the drink steward. This in my view is rather poor considering the price of the cruise and the plaudits from other cruisers. Viking offers one free shore excursion at each port. The walking tours we took, 4, were excellent, but those in a bus were not worth the time spent at all. I was quite disappointed in the meals in the Restaurant ,in the Chef's special restaurant both times and at Manfredi both times. To be fair, one night the prime rib served at the restaurant was amongst the best I have ever had. The waffle at the Explorer Lounge was exceptional. On at least 4 occasions the cookies offered with the buffet were stale. the wines with meals were acceptable if unremarkable. One could upgrade wine selection and liquor for an extra daily per person charge. The speakers/lectures seemed excellent, for those we could make, but we missed the largest number as they were scheduled during dinner hour or just prior to dinner hour. Getting on, on the day of sailing from Bergen, and off the ship in Stockholm, with our luggage, were superbly handled even though we left the ship at 6 am to make our plane. Read Less

We have enjoyed numerous Viking river cruises and hoped this first Viking cruise ship experience would be equally fantastic. It was. Nothing is left to chance with Viking and everything is first class. The thought of getting on one of the many massive cruise ships with 3,000 of our closest friends is hideous. Viking does it all with a smaller ship, with all balcony staterooms, and much more space for outstanding public areas. As we expected, service is simply magnificent. Our steward/butler, Gede, did a fantastic job. Our stateroom, #6005, was always immaculate and the bathroom always shiny and clean. We had plenty of space for our clothing, including numerous drawers and a nice closet. The sofa and chairs were comfortable, and our balcony was of a generous size. Dining was very good. There were at least 6 dining options, all included in the price. The food in each was well prepared, and the variety was appreciated. The spa is perhaps the best of any cruise line. The entire spa is available for no extra charge. We did pay for massages and pedicure. The gym/workout facility consisted of three rooms with top-notch equipment and elipticals/treadmills, etc. Entertainment was varied and mostly very good, if not excellent. How nice to have no casino, no climbing walls, no water slides, and no one under 18 years of age. As Viking touts, this is a thinking person's cruise ship. There were numerous lectures about the ports/history/shopping/human interests. It is possible to wear yourself out with the excursions. Some ports had more than 15 options, with at least one included in the price of the cruise. Most of the ones we selected involved a good deal of walking...on cobblestones. We were glad we brought sturdy shoes. Except for Norway, where it rained virtually the entire time, we had good but cool weather. It was especially nice in St. Petersburg and Stockholm. Jupiter is a beautiful ship, with many places to relax, hide, and kick back. We enjoyed the lovely afternoon tea several times. Be sure to ask for a tour of the bridge, which was a great experience. We had already booked another cruise, Bali to Bangkok next April. The wonderful experience on Jupiter lets us look forward to that trip on the Orion even more. It was particularly nice to be on our smaller ship when docked next to one of the monster ships. We counted our blessings and silently gave thanks for the crew of Jupiter. Read Less

This was the best cruise we have ever been on! Our first experience with Viking was a horrible river cruise. We were very hesitant to go on another Viking cruise. However, this Viking ocean cruise was the best cruise ever! We have already signed up for another one in 2020!! The ship was always spotless even with all the rain we encountered, every crew member was always extremely courteous and professional, the food was exceptional and wait staff were highly trained, every organizational skill was flawless from the docking procedures, evacuation drill, getting passengers to shore excursions, or even daily announcements. The Explorer desk people were very helpful and professional no matter what our inquiries were about. We had 2 days before the cruise, arranged by Viking. The arrangements were wonderful. A very enjoyable hotel, location, and accommodations. We can not say enough positive things about this Viking Jupiter and all of its crew! We are excited for our next Viking cruise in 2020! Read Less

Bartenders were total service and personable, especially Carlos and CJay. Interesting excursions and we had a wonderful time in each port. The food!!! Oh my, we didn't have anything that wasn't fantastic. My husband was especially happy about the Alaskan King crab legs, we went for those, then went for a drink At the Explorer's Lounge for drinks, then to dinner. Our favorite dinner was the Chef's table Mexican night. Loved Ivan for wine and Mario for service! The spa was wonderful and we ended up getting massages which is just what we needed after all the excursions. Excellent masseuses! Cruise director, she was amazing. "See you around the ship." Our stateroom was small but included everything we needed. The staff is very responsive and attentive. The entertainment includes singing and dancing and lectures by knowledgeable scholars. The food was excellent and includes two specialty restaurants that are not additionally priced and only need reservations. Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner. You can also eat outside overlooking amazing scenery. There are two pools and two hot tubs. There is a gym and a spa center where you can go to use the steam or sauna as well as get treatments. The concierge desk was never crowded and had at least two people working at all times. For the most part our included excursions were good. There were a couple of itineraries that could use tweaking. The additional excursions (paid extra for) were very good. Read Less

We wanted to go to Norway to look for my husband's roots, and he found this cruise that sounded interesting on a smaller, more elegant ship. Everything was smooth with great service from booking to disembarking; all of the staff were pleasant and helpful, the cabin was comfortable and well-appointed. Food was great with several restaurant choices, but we spent most meals in the delicious and bountiful buffet. We especially loved sitting on our veranda while the ship sailed out of ports and through the beautiful waters of the Norwegian coast. Shore excursions were appropriate to the locations with very good guides and drivers. The optional excursions are relatively high priced, so we did some things on our own. We did a 3-day pre-cruise extension to Iceland which was really enjoyable and a good value. The ship's entertainment was a bit narrowly focused, with good music performers and a fun magician, but would have liked more variety. We were so impressed with Viking that we signed up for a 2021 river cruise while on board! Read Less

We chose this cruise, first, for the destination. We have always wanted to visit the British Isles. This cruise allowed us to get a taste of several countries, and multiple cities all in one vacation. We chose Viking because they offered this trip, it also because the value of the cruise was well worth it. It is not the least expensive one out there, but we agree that it is of the best value. Some of the reasons to travel Viking are: no kids under 18, no casinos, no umbrella drinks, no upselling of products in the spa, no additional charges for excursions, no additional charges for specialty restaurants, no nickel and diming with pictures of you with the captain etc. This is an ADULT cruise for those who want to LEARN. Of course we also had a ton of fun, but this is not a party cruise. The ship itself was a floating palace. Beautiful, clean, simple Scandinavian decor, lovely colors mixed with creams, and the lighting was spectacular. Destination artwork and pictures decked the walls and seating areas. Food was amazing. Cleanest public restrooms I’ve ever seen! The entire ship was immaculate. They worked so hard at keeping things clean! Daily tea was served in the Wintergarden complete with loose leaf tea in pots, delicious scones and finger sandwiches. We took advantage of that as much as we could. Service was outstanding. We simply could not have asked for better. Anything we needed or wanted was ours. The destinations were incredible. Excursions were good. Most tour guides were very knowledgeable and helpful, with a few exceptions, but those guides didn’t work directly for Viking, and the ones we were disappointed in, we let Viking know. In addition, there were port talks given in advance to inform you about the port, and any last minute changes that were taking place. And the lectures by the resident historians were not only informative, but entertaining as well! Embarkation and Disembarkation went very smoothly. No troubles at all. I just can’t recommend Viking enough. You will NOT be disappointed! Read Less

Food was very good and plentiful. Complimentary wine and beer with lunch and dinner a definite plus. Stocked minirefrigerator with free soft drinks and snacks unheard of. On board entertainment exceptional. Everything about the cruise was beyond our expectations. Even warm wash cloths handed to us when we returned from our tours. Talk about being pampered!! Service on the ship was excellent at all times. My wife's main focus was on Liverpool and London as she is a Beatles fanatic. She loved the excursions we did. I'm not much of drinker but found that I really liked the variety of wines served during lunch and dinner. We missed our connecting flight to Bergen but Viking made sure we made it to the boat on time. Our luggage didn't arrive with us in Bergen but the Viking rep at the airport filed all the paperwork for us as we didn't have time. Accommodations, food, service, and tours were excellent. Ship was immaculate, and shows and other entertainment, fabulous. Ship's band and singers played an amazing variety of music for listening, and best of all, dancing! What can we say about the sensational food aboard the Viking Sun? OK...my husband's doctor just told him to lose the 10 pounds he gained on both the cruises. We really appreciated that (good) wine and beers were complimentary at lunch & supper. Yup, it was easy to over-indulge well-made food almost all day and well into the evening! Most interesting ports in northern Norway, Scotland, and London. We have been home a while from our INTO THE MIDNIGHT SUN cruise on the VIKING SUN in June/July 2019 and it is past time for me to put in a review. This is our second cruise with Viking Ocean, we cruised on the Sea earlier this year in the Caribbean. We actually booked this cruise first and then added the Caribbean one on afterwards. We used Viking Air for this cruise and did well with it. We certainly didn’t have a big cost savings but the efficiency was worth it. Viking representatives met us when we arrived in Bergen and also assisted us to transportation when departing the ship in London. Ground transportation to the airport after the cruise was well handled getting us to Heathrow well in advance of our departure. The entire check-in process was quick and painless without the long lines that are normal for most of the cruises we have been on previously. We were a little early for going to our room, but since we had traveled all night, we hit an early lunch and then went to the room to unpack (yes, our luggage was there already) and a quick nap. Our room stewards, Ranger and Erik, were there introducing themselves and assisting us with any issues we had. Of course, there were no issues; this is Viking! On a sailing with many sea days, they work very hard to ensure they don’t impact guests in cabin time, but get cabins cleaned. Throughout the cruise, Ranger and Erik were wonderful, always helpful, smiling and efficient. They did an outstanding job of ensuring we had everything we needed! We introduced ourselves to Corinne Bach, the cruise director. Corinne was fairly new in the job and it showed, but she did a fine job. We also met Jasna Randelovic, the Beverage Manager, always someone good to know, and Norbert Tesar, the General Manager that first day onboard. We found Norbert to be the most approachable General/Hotel Manager with which we have ever sailed. Jasna and I hit it off and we spoke often, she is very personable and informative. The wait staff onboard the Viking Sun was very efficient and their service was outstanding. Yurii Semenov the Restaurant manager was always available and often pitched right in if the restaurant staff was busy. This cruise was a bit different from our previous one because there were a number of at-sea days. During these at-sea days, there were wonderful luncheon buffets set up in the area by the pool. The food was outstanding. But then again, the food on this ship in all the venues was outstanding and the service impeccable. The Chef’s Table and Manfredi’s (my husband’s favorite) are not to be missed and we took full advantage of both. One morning, we sat with a ‘difficult’ couple and they calmed down talking to us over a delightful breakfast in the restaurant. After that it seemed like the restaurant staff went even more out of their way to say hello and ensure we were extremely well taken care of. We did some of the included tours in Norway, Scotland and London. Most were bus tours, but they were interesting and the guides were wonderful and very knowledgeable. In many instances we had PhD students or equivalent telling us about the area. We also took many optional tours and loved all of them. My husband knocked many items off his bucket list during this cruise. The scenery on the tours and even just from the ship as we sailed the fjords and coastlines was amazing. We learned a great deal about the areas we visited. The onboard lecturers were excellent as well, and my husband made it a practice to go to as many as he could fit in between shore excursions. On the additional sea days, these were always well attended. Those that we missed in person were available on the TV shortly after they completed. We also had a festive “Blue Nose” ceremony onboard when we crossed the Arctic Circle; what fun. We enjoyed the various musical interludes onboard, particularly the choral group in Tromso. The entire staff from the Captain on down worked hard to ensure our trip was enjoyable. We had a wonderful time! Read Less

Having been a loyal customer of another cruise line, but having recently enjoyed the Viking River Cruise experience, we gambled and took our 1st cruise with Viking Ocean. What a GREAT Decision. Viking ticks all the boxes for us. No photographers chasing us around the ship, no formal nights and no wasted ship space for a gambling area. The smaller ship with fewer guests was a welcome change and the enrichment lectures exceeded our expectations. Lots of space on the Sky for just sitting alone and taking in the view. The quality of the interior of the ship was just 1st class! Regarding the food, the lunches and dinners were well done (the breakfast were so similar that I would call this an area for improvement). The Sparkling Wine & Glasses delivered to our room on our 25th Anniversary was a surprise! With the exception of one photography tour in Iceland, all the shore excursions were well enjoyed by my wife and I. Although the cost of the cruise sounded high initially, when you factor in all the included excursions, alcohol at lunch/dinner, free bottled water, and all the other extras, we felt this cost was probably equal to or less than our past cruise line. All in all, we WILL cruise with Viking again and may find it difficult to go back to our cruise line of the past.... Read Less

Our first cruise and we were not disappointed. We booked a penthouse veranda and the room was quiet, well designed, aesthetically pleasing and importantly with a comfortable well sized bed. The food, ambience staff and overall experience was 5*. Be aware that Viking promote and market heavily in the USA and a small number of American guests were loud and rude, especially in the select restaurants with little consideration for other diners. I really don't want to know about how Trump is doing a great job or hear a group of girls whooping while we're enjoying a quiet meal! However we also met some lovely guests and new friends from America, the UK, Australia and Canada and remain in contact. Disappointing that on the final night the boat is being cleared and cleaned ready for the next guests and you feel like you are in the way. The only other issue to be aware of is that although we had registered our Credit Card a small charge of $2.50 was picked up by the card company as suspicious when Viking tried to charge the account at 1am on the morning before leaving and we were not informed before departing. This resulted in me being held and escorted back to the service desk to resolve with my wife concerned, unaware and waiting on the transfer bus with other guests. This was highly embarrassing and could have been resolved if Viking had left a note in the room before we vacated the room. I informed customer service and although the team verbally apologised we received no written apology and again this is less than satisfactory given the cost of the cruise. No follow up from Viking whatsoever other than marketing emails. Read Less

The Itinerary is great and you will see spectacular scenery in Norway. Unfortunately, with any cruise you can't control the weather which is really important if you want to see the Northern Lights. We were glad we were able to see the Northern Lights but somewhat disappointed in the color and brightness due to most of the nights being cloudy. Also, cameras really pickup more color than the naked eye so having a camera that is capable of taking pictures of the Northern Lights is critical. Viking Sky does a good job of providing guest hints on how to take good pictures of the Northern Lights. We had a stress free embarkation in Bergen Norway. Very convenient location within walking distance of several hotels and attractions which made it nice since it was an overnight stay on the Ship in Bergen. The ship is gorgeous and mostly well maintained. They do a really good job of keeping the common areas clean. But be aware of the ice that can accumulate on the outside decks. It seems that Viking could have put a barrier around the ice which would have really improved the situation. This was mostly an issue at night when people would go to the decks and couldn't see the ice. I really like having the Self-service launderette. Our stateroom attendants were very friendly and did a great job taking care of our stateroom. The capability for Viking to notify guest, who wanted to be alerted no matter what time of the night, that Northern Lights were visible from the ship was fantastic. It did really add a special touch to the cruise. There were more movies and shows available on the TV then expected. The dining staff did a good job and were very friendly. I really like that the World Cafe for the most part served the same food that the Restaurant did so if guest didn't want to dress for dinner they had they same food options. Viking could expand some of the options such as bread and cookies so that each meal isn't the same the entire cruise. Don't get me wrong there are plenty of options but each lunch and dinner had the exact same bread everyday. I liked the availability of the specialty food buffets that were served on the pool deck that provided added flexibility and variety for dining options. We really enjoyed our dinners in The Chef's Table and Manfredi's. The included wine was mostly good except we really didn't enjoy the German red wine they had several meals. The included excursion for the most part were rather boring and didn't do much other than drive around and I think Viking could do a better job of describing the tours so guest will have a better idea of what to expect. For example, the tour in Bergen explanation of the excursion should reflect the actual excursion making it clear that it doesn't stop at the King Haakon’s Hall, the Rosenkrantz Tower or the Fish Market. We did really enjoy the included excursion in Tromso where we visited the Northern Light Planetarium. We enjoyed the warm drinks (especially the Baileys and Hot Chocolate) when returning to ship from our excursions. For the most part, Viking Sky did a good job of getting guest on and off the ship. The second day in Bergen was the only port that the line was extremely long when returning from our excursion. Disembarkation was extremely smooth. Do not expect taxi's to be readily available at the Tilbury port. Transportation should be planned prior to disembarkation. We rented a car from Enterprise which picked us up at the port. Read Less

The whole experience of this expedition voyage was absolutely wonderful. We chose the cruise mainly because we wanted to see the Northern Lights and we decided to go on the Astronomy tour, when there would be an astronomer on board. We have never travelled on a ship for so long, and for us this was a great voyage of adventure and not a run of the mill "cruise". It certainly surpassed our expectations. Hurtigruten organise everything superbly and the expedition team on board are very knowledgeable, helpful and add to the overall experience during the voyage. There is a schedule each day that also has important information on it and points of interest are highlighted on the way, often with a gathering about the sight. The astronomy talks were brilliant and added to the overall experience and we were so lucky to see so mainly northern light displays during our voyage, and with the astronomer , John, who shared his knowledge about this wonderful natural phenomena. The food on board was excellent. Lots of it and lots of choice too. Evening meal except 2 nights was 3 course a la carte, which was very nice. Tea and coffee is also available at certain places on the ship throughout the day and after evening meal for those on a package. All staff are really helpful and polite and will do anything to help. Drinks are expensive as is the case in Scandinavia. We opted for a house wine drinks package. All in all a glass of wine is around £10, so we thought the wine package would be more economical. There were about 6 different choices of wine on this package, either red or white and most were nice quality. There are also beer packages as well. We went on 2 trips which we highly recommend. North Cape on day 6 and snowmobiling on day 7. Very well organised. The only point to make is that we booked our excursions prior to the holiday, as we were told it would get booked up. We were told that one trip was fully booked so we opted for another instead. However, on board all the trips had places advertised by the expedition team and you could book with them very easily on board and the trip we originally wanted had lots of space. if we did it again we would probably wait to book excursions until on board. A great variety of hikes were on offer as well. Even though we did not venture on these we heard from others how great they were. There is plenty of opportunity, depending on the weather, to get off the ship. More so on the Northern voyage. There are plenty of great areas on the ship to view the wonderful scenery from inside and deck 9 has a large outside deck area that was the main place to view the northern lights. The cabins are clean and have plenty of storage space. We were on deck 6 which has the viewing areas and the muster station. We would definitely go again. Read Less

We went to enjoy a voyage on the grand old lady (MS Lofoten) of the Hurtigruten again. The combination of the ship, crew, food, fellow passengers, weather, scenery, excursions, and overall ambience would have been great even without five mind-wowing nights with Northern Lights displays. The breakfast and lunch buffets were both full of different varieties of fish - at least seven different varieties of fish at virtually every meal! There were also some very interesting vegetarian options, which I ate out of preference rather than conviction. Even without going on any excursions, one could have a fascinating time. The constantly changing scenery kept ones interest. And in the many ports of call, there was always something of interest in the deck cargo. I loved the Salky (racing chariot) which was carried for about a day, only to be replaced by a speedboat. And the fellow passengers were great! But the icing on the cake came with some of the excursions. Riding on the seashore, in the dark except for the northern lights playing above, with only the sound of the waves and the horses in the snow, was absolutely magical. Just one of many fantastic excursions. Read Less

Just returned from a 11 day Northern Lights voyage along the Norwegian coast to Kirkenes and back to Bergen - and it was mind blowing. I've returned relaxed, pampered and looking to book another cruise - with Hurtigurten. Never will I grace Royal Caribbean, or Princess again No casinos, no spas, no entertainment crews - it was education, relaxing and no hard sell. Cabins were basic, clean and well thought out, Bathrooms small and efficient. Staff were incredibly professional and charming Its a working ship, and the dress code was refreshingly casual..no dressing up for dinner. We loved every minute of it and the food was amazing. Fresh, locally sourced, not a french fry, burger, hot dog, pizza or hot dog in site. Excursions were expensive, but worth every penny - and no more expensive than the private ones which you can arrange independently Yes, alcohol is expensive, but this is Norway, and the prices on the ship were cheaper than the mid range hotels in Bergen. Embarkment and disembarkation were incredibly fast - we were in our hotel in less than an hour of leaving our deck - straight into a taxi. Tips - bring a kettle if you don't buy the premium package - learn how to use your camera for photographing the northern lights ( we had 6 nights of this spectacular) - bring a pair of slippers, good books, knitting/craft/watercolours - something to do when you are sailing along do at least 3 expeditions ( we did dog sledging, the ice hotel and the marble mines. All were incredible) Ignore the moaning minnie reviews. There are hundreds of thousand of people who have done this voyage. final words, don't hesitate book it! Read Less

One of the most exhilarating experiences in my life, this cruise was our perfect honeymoon gift to each other. We didn't get the time to explore Bergen, but had no issues with embarkation & disembarkation. We were thoroughly impressed by the courteous staff, who gave us a free upgrade, & also took care of my wife when she felt sea sick during mild rolling. The spread of food during all the meals was impressive. Even the shop on board had a nice variety of souvenirs for us to bring back. Our shore excursion to Trondheim was a memorable one. We were also fortunate enough to sight the Aurora Borealis from the observation deck. Although I was denied a visit to the Engine Room by the Chief Engineer despite me being a marine engineer by profession, I would definitely go again, after a few years, if I get a good discounted deal. We wanted to book a Norwegian cruise on a smallish ship and to be able to sail into small ports and fijords also to see the northern lights. We achieved all of this on the Nordylis. However listening to some passengers who had been on other larger ships, if you are looking for pure luxury and entertainment then this is definitely not the cruise for you. Also you have to remember that this is a working boat so. Calls into several ports during the night so expected broken sleep on the first few nights. You soon become acclimatised to the noise so wasn’t too much of a nuisance to us. The food served at the buffets is varied and everyone should be able to ind something they like. The set meals are quite small portions which again suited us as we had the 8pm sitting and didn’t want to go to bed after heavy meal. It looked beautiful and we enjoyed all the different Norwegian recipes served but again heard some people complaining about the portion sizes and menu. The answer to this is to speak to the head waitress either earlier in the day to change whatever it is you don’t fancy or speak to the waitress when it is brought to the table and they will change it/ bring you more etc. They couldn’t have been more helpful. Also be warned that an average bottle of wine is £45 +! A glass of wine or beer is £10! The prices are roughly the same in the local alcohol stores so it’s not that Hurtigruten are over charging it is just the price of everything generally in Norway. We took alcohol on board with us to drink in our cabin and it did not cause a problem. If you want a different and reasonably priced experience with good food and beautiful scenery this is definitely the cruise for you. Read Less

We were interested in the ports in the itinerary (several in Noreay, Denmark, Germany, Poland, St. Petersburg Russia, Estonia, and Sweden) and we had gotten a great recommendation from friends on the quality of the Viking Ocean cruises. We particularly enjoyed the several stops in Norway. Other highlights: Helsinki was lovely. We visited the Stutthof Concentration Camp near Gdańsk, Poland. St. Petersburg was absolutely amazing. Excursions were well run, and the local guides were terrific. We enjoyed dining options aboard the ship, none with an extra cost. There is 24 hour room service available, also at no charge. Free internet worked well throughout the ship. Viking also provides free internet to the crew, unlike other cruise lines, which allows them to stay in touch with family during time away from home. The crew were all terrific, and provided a high level of service. Common areas were expansive and never crowded. We enjoyed our trip so much that we have booked another Viking cruise for next year. Unpacking once and being able to experience multiple ports of calls by simply stepping off the ship was wonderful. The food overall was delicious and we had many choices of cuisine and restaurants. . It was fun to taste the local cuisine at lunch and dinner in each port of call. The guides were so knowledgeable and having the Port talks and Q&As helped tremendously. It enabled the experience of the historical sites to be all we hoped they would be. The Cruise Director gave us little tops for each stop. My favorite spot Eidfjord,Norway, was beyond spectacular as we viewed it from our balcony at sunrise. It had been a life long dream to see the Fjords and it surpassed all of my expectations. The most wonderful part overall was the total relaxation on this beautiful luxurious ship. There was nothing you could want for, from the throw blankets everywhere to the popcorn and movies at night to be taken care of at every moment by a very efficient, friendly crew. Read Less
