wonderful cruise. was looking for a river cruise and found this one on the web site. thought seeing these historic places in one trip was astounding. The ship was amazing and the service was outstanding. never saw a frown from a crew member. the food was varied and sometimes unusual, but the breakfasts were wonderful and I never missed one. I also enjoyed the fact that on the smaller ship, the only time I felt crowded was getting off the ship for excursions. still they were orderly and moved along. having fewer than 1,000 on board really helped. I have been on cruises with more than 4,000 passengers and they were terribly unwieldy. The only complaint I had was the lack of smoking areas. We had just one spot on the whole ship and it was inconvenient for a lot of us. Not being able to smoke on the veranda was a disappointment. Read Less

I have always wanted to go to Scandinavia and this was an amazing opportunity to see many highlights of these wonderful countries. I had difficulty with my flight getting to Bergen but once there the embarkation process was very easy. Other than the very early departure time, the disembarkation also went very smoothly. The ship was beautiful, very homey feeling with lots of places to sit and relax. The cabin was very well appointed with everything that you would need. I particularly liked the veranda. We enjoyed having room service for breakfast and being able to relax in our cabin. The entertainment was good but not exceptional. We did like the lectures and the tea room. The food was very tasty and we enjoyed having local choices as well as many great options for our dining pleasure. Also greatly enjoyed the galley tour. The service was superb - whatever you wanted or needed was supplied very quickly. We did mainly the included tours and felt they gave us a good overview of each port we were in. I also enjoyed the Trollhaugen tour in Bergen although I would have liked a little less talking from the guide and more time to actually spend in the home and museum. The recital was excellent. The Fabrege tour was fabulous! We also enjoyed the Winter Palace and Art Museum tour in St. Petersburg. I would definitely go again and highly recommend Viking! Read Less

We sailed for our first time with Viking and we were not disappointed. We had a verandah balcony which was great. Our room was just beautiful and so was the bathroom. The food was absolutely amazing. We did all the included tours, then also did some that we paid for ourselves. All tours were top notch. Very organized embarkation and disembarkation. We enjoyed every part of the ship and the different restaurants, cafe's, The Tea Room - with afternoon tea and snacks! Watched movies under the stars and they even had popcorn and blankets. Very nice. The staff were really amazing. From the person who looked after our room, to the people who served the food, the bar tenders etc. We did not travel with children and did not see any on this cruise. Not really a cruise for children. We have already booked another Viking cruise in the Med for October 2018 and can't wait. And we have booked a precruise tour as well as a add on at the end. We have cruised on river cruises with Scenic, and we have done ocean cruises with Princess, Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Norwegian and I would say that the Viking ocean cruise was the best. Only did river cruise with Scenic, so can't compare that. Read Less

I've taken a couple of river cruises with Viking, but this was my first Viking Ocean cruise. It exceeded my expectations. I've cruised with a couple of other ocean lines and really like the smaller ship. The lounges and shows were more intimate, the food was fabulous - the "specialty" restaurants were excellent and no extra expense! We were able to get a reservation easily on the same day. With the smaller ship we were able to dock right at the port. We simply walked off the ship, no waiting for a tender, so our time on shore was maximized. The excursion choices were bountiful and the quality superior. I highly recommend the 2-day St. Petersburg excursion. While a little pricey, totally worth it. You go to the head of the line at the Hermitage(the lines are VERY long) and the guide we had spoke perfect English. She was the guide to several of our Presidents and her knowledge invaluable. Viking is known for its service and bar none, it's at the top of the list. From modifying meals to accommodate asks, to finding something for you, to the smiles and greetings from all of the staff, to dropping you off right at the door to picking you up at the door instead of making you walk in the rain, to making sure everything in your cabin is perfect - top notch service! I booked 2 additional ocean cruises with them and am very much looking forward to them! Read Less

My wife and I, and family, have taken a number of cruises on a number of different lines. These trips were chosen for a variety of reasons, including a family vacation for ten of us for our 50th anniversary. And so many factors came into play, such as opportunities for our grandkids to have appropriate activities. But for us alone, this cruise was clearly the best we have had and we have decided that the only cruise line for us at this point will be Viking. First of all, the service is spectacular, not like a number of lines where the staff looks at the floor as you pass them by. This is not the case for Viking; everyone is very gracious and very present for you. The food is terrific--really good--and there is no extra charge for their two specialty restaurants. The lounges are comfortable and beautiful. There are NO art auctions, thank the Lord; there is no gambling: thank God; there are no incessant hall loud speakers blaring during the trip--thank Goodness. And while there are stores on the ship, no one is hawking jewelry or taking cuts from shopping at the ports. It is, as many of our on-board friends noted- the most civilized cruise they have ever taken. And it has been this for us. While there are servers roaming for drink orders, they appear to be much less present and intrusive than other lines we have travelled on. While the entertainment is modest, it is enough. We would, however, appreciated more and better lectures around the areas we were visiting. So, we are sold on the Viking Ocean cruises, for what they offer and significantly--what they don't have! Great ship and service. However beverage package did not include minibar except airplane bottles of liquor and beer (no wine). Upgraded wines included in package included one I recognized which sells for $4.50 bottle. Otherwise great food and presentation especially in the specialty restaurants. Note: most days only one restaurant was open for lunch causing pretty long lines and congestion. Pool bar was open but very limited menu. Not many light or salad options at either restaurant. Staff were over the top nice and accommodating and knew us by name by day 2. Great itinerary and memorable trip. Destinations were great as they avoided the ports used by the "big" ships. Especially enjoyed Bergen and Tallinn. Berlin trip was long tain ride each way to city packed with tourists. Don't think I would do it again as some of the other excursions may have been more interesting and given more time to absorb. Read Less

Wanted to visit Scandinavia and St Petersburg. Experience was better than our dreams thanks to Viking superb service, attention to detail, top of the line treatment in everything they did. The ship was simply magnificent. Dining facilities were the best we have experienced at sea or ashore, The crew were the most courteous, caring, and hardworking people - they did whatever it took to satisfy every request and need. The Viking Sky is truly the top of luxury for a cruise ship. Its design an amenities are simply the best in every way. Its size is ideal because you feel a personal touch in every event. When we pulled into port the numbers of people aboard did not overwhelm the facilities ashore. All the guides ashore, with a couple of exceptions were simply the best - they were enthusiastic, proud to represent their town/country, and their joy was contagious. The ship pulled into the best positions in every port making disembarkation/embarkation seamless. The cuisine was first class all the way. Each meal was like eating at a four star restaurant, and the Chefs clearly took pleasure in presenting the best meals every time. We have just booked another Viking Cruise, our fourth, and we are demanding international travelers. Read Less

We sale with Viking because of the small boutique ships which are absolutely beautiful! They are tastefully appointed in a Scandinavian design, not over the top and garish as some ships. I love that they cater to adults and not teens or children. I love children but never having our own we prefer to travel in a more quiet setting. This was only our third Viking cruise, the first being a river cruise, the second the Mediterranean Odyssey cruise, the third being the Viking Homeland cruise. We loved all three but we preferred the ocean cruises the most. The size of ship was perfect for us and the destinations a dream. We will certainly go on more in the future. In fact we can't wait. I highly recommend this cruise line for those of you who are not interested in casinos, water slides, rock climbing walls etc. you won't be disappointed. Read Less

The Port excursions were very helpful in visiting the numerous sites we selected as well as making some last day changes. The food was excellent and both the restaurants and lounge staff were courteous in meeting our wishes. This was our 6th Viking trip and we are now planning a river trip in September 2108 (Our 7th Viking cruise). Our cabins were cleaned in a reasonable and efficient manner and the staff quickly dealt with the few small problems that we encountered. My wife and I were also very pleased with the use of the no cost washing and drying machines for some of our clothing. We look forward to sailing with Viking again next year. Finally, we were very pleased with our interaction with the wide range of staff on the ship. The individuals we interacted with were open in chatting with us as well providing directions and advice. Traveled with sister who had been on this line before. Food delicious. Choices of restaurants very good. Port talks and lectures very informative. Entertainment very good. Service excellent in all areas. The ship and room were lovely. So nice that all rooms have a veranda. The spa was wonderful. They had areas that I have never seen on a ship before like the ice room. We added a pre-trip to Iceland for 4 days which was fabulous. Would definitely go with Viking again and would recommend to friends which I already have. Even though it included wine and beer with lunch and dinner and one free land tour per port; I thought it was a little pricey. The one drawback was that we had to get up at 2:30AM to disembark. Because Viking made the flight plans I think that they may have picked flights that were cheaper for them. Read Less

I liked that hand hygiene was available at every restaurant. Food was excellent, with lots of choices for every meal. I particularly loved the smoothies in the morning and the soups at lunch. Room service 24 hours a day was nice although we only used it one time. Free drinks and snacks in our room was great for middle of the day snacking. The spa was wonderful but didn't stay open late enough to enjoy after the evening meal. The ship wasn't crowded and it was easy to move from one area to another. The free excursions was another selling point for us. We enjoyed all of them and never felt that we didn't see enough of the various ports. Time spent in port was adequate for shopping and sightseeing. Read Less

This cruise line is not intended for families. It is designed for older adults. Doesn’t nickel and dime you. Daily excursion is included in the price. Very well organized group and some of the most personable staff ever! Small ship means smaller staff, easy to get to know everyone. Plenty of places to sit and relax with or without others around. Both embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly, no issues for us. The cabin is nicely decorated, nice size, love the heated bathroom floor. Included wine and beer at lunch and dinner is A+. Great variety of options at meal times, the soups are some of the best I’ve ever had! Service is exemplary, very kind and thoughtful staff. Loved the fact that the ship was able to dock at the ports, no tenders required. Planned our next trip, with 4 other couples while we were still on the ship. We chose this cruise because of the itinerary and because we cruised on their river cruises and were excited when Viking went to Ocean cruises and we were not disappointed. From the easy embarkation to the end everything was top shelf in our opinion. Our bags were in our stateroom before we were and our cabin girl introduced herself and showed us the room. We were happy to find a cruise line with all rooms having decks, no casinos, no children and only 930 passengers. We have do large ships and kids cruises but at this point in our lives we don't want all that. The service was excellent from our room steward to the waiters and people getting us on and off the ship each day all were great. Being a small ship allowed us good docking areas and the Viking buses were waiting for our included tours at each port. Viking is very port intensive so only one day at sea but we enjoyed the Swedish spa especially the salt water bubbly pool, steam room, snow grotto and clean changing rooms with an attendant for any questions. Shows were nice but more low key then on bigger ships but the entertainment was top notch. Food was very good and I liked that for the buffet the crew gave you the food for most of it so no worries about someone picking it up and putting it back. All in all a wonderful cruise and can't wait for our next one with Viking. Read Less

Ports and excursions are exceptional. Top quality without the feeling of overreaching in compartments and food.. Suites are very comfortable (Jr Suite 8001) was quiet and roomy. Excursions were stimulating and expertly planned. Viking is prone to intellectually stimulation one understanding of new places Food was good albeit not Michelin star level. This was our second Viking Cruise and we are Scheduled for our third in December. Our basis of comparison was 8 years in the USN on big gray ships with big gray guns and missiles. Had some mishaps in particular, we were kick off an excursion on the first day it was offered. It was fully paid for the day we purchased the cruise. The night before we joined the ship say our excursion was cancelled. We were told we cancelled with no explanation. When getting aboard the vessel. They said they had overbooked the excursion. We then told the Viking person we talked to we signed up for the excursion on the day it was offered. We were charged and had been first to sign up for the excursion. It should be first come first serve. There response was "we can do whatever we want including throwing you off the ship. We got over it over the next several days, but has left a sour taste on our mouths. Read Less

My husband and I booked a Baltic cruise with Viking in early 2016 for a May 2017 trip. Having been on an amazing Viking river cruise, we convinced three other couples to sign up too.....what a mistake! Our trip had a rough start due to weather/airline problems in the US. When we finally arrived at Bergen, we were whisked away from the airport before being allowed to get our luggage.....so we were without our suitcases for two days. Because we had missed several events, we requested verification from the concierge of those missed activities for our insurance claim. To say they were less than helpful is an understatement. On a happier note, the housekeeping crew was amazing, the restaurant crews were very friendly and helpful. The food was average, entertainment was good, the cruise director was poor, and the "historical insights" lectures were very poor. I was embarrassed that I had encouraged the three other couples to come. Viking does an amazing job with river cruises, but they need help with the ocean cruise business. This will be the last one I take with them. Read Less

We chose this tour because of the itinerary. It was exactly what we were looking for, and it turned out to been even better than we could have imagined. First the ship and Viking - nothing was left to chance. The excursions were especially impressive. Every one was timed perfectly, with excellent guides. We learned so much in every port. On board ship, the Port Talks were an excellent resource to prepare us for our visits. Getting off and back on the ship always went smoothly, and finding our tours was always easy due to the numerous support personnel organized to guide us. Our cabin was well designed, and the crew provided great care. The variety of restaurants, all of which were wonderful, made sure meals would never be dull. The afternoon tea was icing on the cake. Back to the itinerary; we took the "Viking Homelands" cruise. I had researched the ports of call before we went, and I had high expectations for 75% of our stops. As it turned out, I was amazed that each and every port was interesting, exciting and a pure delight. Additionally, as I mentioned, the guides were tops. They were knowledgeable and very open, answering all questions completely, adding personal experiences were helpful. Read Less

The ship was spotless and the crew (especially the cabin attendants and the bartenders) were extremely professional and friendly. The Chef's Table and Italian Restaurant were by reservation only, but they were included in the price of the cruise - no additional fees. Room Service was available 24 hours at no additional charge. There was a laundry available 24 hours at no charge. The shore excursions were well planned and the guides were extremely knowledgeable and professional. The onboard entertain was "Broadwayish". I wanted to take the return trip, but didn't have the time. Taking a short cruise with a competitor - I have a feeling that I'm going to be disappointed after going with Viking!!!! What I'm finding is that with Viking's competitors - every added amenity has an up charge, where with Viking everything is included. The main reason we booked this tour was the Itinerary, and the fact that it included both the Baltic and Norway. We liked the fact that there was at least one tour available for each port, with several different times to choose from. The tours were well-organized, and led by local guides, who were all fluent in English and quite knowledgeable. We liked having access to all of the restaurants on board without any additional charges, and that we weren't bound by a set time for any meals. We appreciate that Viking offered lectures relating to the history, culture and geography of every country/port, and that these lectures were available to watch from our cabin if we were unable to attend at the time they were given. This was our first Viking cruise. The entire crew provided uniformly excellent service, and the ratio of staff to passengers was the best we've ever experienced. We appreciate that the Viking management provided time off during the day for the cabin staff so they could rest or go off the ship. The food on board was outstanding; there were many healthy choices, and a large variety of different types of food, with regional choices for every lunch and dinner. There were a lot of books throughout the ship, which included novels, guidebooks, and non-fiction titles. The artwork was also varied and interesting. Read Less

The staff bent over backwards to make sure our holiday experience was as good as possible - nothing was ever too much trouble. Best of all was our lovely cabin steward Ayu. The staff were friendly, smiling and helpful. The Nordic sauna and swimming pools (one outdoor) were lovely and everything was immaculate, not a speck of dirt or dust anywhere. Meals were wonderful as well, with a huge choice of dishes, always including some local specialities. The excursions were well organized, enjoyable and informative. There was a wide variety of entertainment onboard as well, including a splendid professional pianist. I'd do this trip again without hesitation. I have tried hard to think of something but there was nothing I could possibly criticize. Even the haircut I had onboard was exceptional! Thank you, Viking, for a wonderful two weeks. Read Less

On board the food was great and the service good. I also enjoyed the cooking class I took. We also enjoyed the lectures and additional information presented on the places we visited. There wasn't enough time to do all we were interested in. Russia was the least interesting of the countries we visited. The timing of this particular cruise was particularly good as we saw several national holidays being celebrated. It was fun and interesting to see how each country celebrated their heritage. The included tours were very well chosen and the guides excellent. In particular we enjoyed the tours in Norway and Estonia. We were just talking about wanting to do this cruise again. Loved our outing in Flaam Norway to the goat farm perched high up on the hillside, A great hike up and down with views of the fjord below. We would like to see more adventure oriented outings from Viking on future trips. Also loved the 2 day excursion in St. Petersburg which covered as much possible of the historical sites, palaces and museums in and out of the city. Food was fresh with varying selections! This cruise followed the route of the Vikings to the New World, from Norway, to the Shetland Islands, Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, Newfoundland, Quebec City, ending in Montreal. Incredible route and fascinating land tours of areas of our world not often considered for a vacation. Viking's nightly enrichment talks added immensely to our understanding of this harsh northern environment. The Viking Star is a gorgeous ship. All well appointed staterooms are on the outside with balconies. The staff are all exceedingly friendly and helpful. We sincerely hope to encounter some of them again on future Viking cruises. There were a couple shows that were fun and well done. Viking kept us entertained even on the sea days between docking. Even tho there were roughly 1000 passengers aboard, it never felt crowded. Ample places to explore and rest! Dining was always a treat. Featured items included food items of the areas we were visiting, plus the 3 speciality restaurants could rival the best of those found on land (the Italian Manfredi's steak is superb! We chose this cruise because of the route and stops on this cruise The cruise was from Bergen Norway stopping at the Shetland Islands, the Farro Islands, Iceland, Greenland, the Viking archeological site in Newfoundland, and then down the St.Lawrence River to Montreal. This was the first transatlantic crossing for the Viking Star which was first put into service in 2015 and had been in service in Europe. We have done Viking river cruises and since we liked the stops on the route we thought we would try a Viking ocean cruise. The ship is new and quite nice. It is very well maintained and the crew is friendly and helpful. The food was excellent with a very nice variety. Overall I would rate the cruise as average. First of all the cruise is not all inclusive which in today's market is really out of place. You will be charged $14 per person per day as gratuities for the staff. On our 15 day cruise that added an additional $420 to the cost of the cruise. Viking apparently doesn't want to tell you the true cost of the trip by including these costs in the ticket. Beer, wine and soft drinks are included at lunch and dinner and you are charged for them at all other times. You can purchase an all inclusive drink package but the cost is quite costly There is a mini fridge in your room and you have four soft drinks in it. You can drink them without charge but if you want more you are charged $2 for each soft drink. I personally find it to be insulting that soft drinks are not included in the price of the cruise. Service in the restaurants was spotty at best. At times service was acceptable but never really good and other times it was just plane bad. I never saw any service around the pool or lounge areas. There is one main bar on the first deck with a few tables around it and here there was service. In the surrounding lounge area if there was service I never saw any. We always had to go to the bar and get our own drinks. One aspect of the restaurant service that I found especially discusting was when you finished one course of your meal the waiters would remove your dishes but would place your used silverware on the table for you to use on the next course. I would expect this type of service in a truck stop but not here. Overall I would rate the cruise experience as average. You will have a good time and you will enjoy the cruise but Viking is not one of the top tier of cruise lines. Don't expect a Viking ocean cruise to be the same as a Crystal or Seaborne cruise. These cruise lines have better amenities and service. However as I said you will still have a good experience on Viking Read Less

The daily lectures were so very interesting with whale watching added. The daily introduction to the ports we stopped at were also very interesting and helpful and certainly added to the overall experience.
