My husband and I so enjoyed our Viking river cruise from Paris to Normandy last December, we decided to splurge on a 15 ocean adventure aboard the Viking Sun. We weren't disappointed! Accommodations, food, service, and tours were excellent. Ship was immaculate, and shows and other entertainment, fabulous. Ship's band and singers played an amazing variety of music for listening, and best of all, dancing! What can we say about the sensational food aboard the Viking Sun? OK...my husband's doctor just told him to lose the 10 pounds he gained on both the cruises. We really appreciated that (good) wine and beers were complimentary at lunch & supper. Yup, it was easy to over-indulge well-made food almost all day and well into the evening! Most interesting ports in northern Norway, Scotland, and London. Included tours were extremely good with wonderful, informative guides. We can hardly wait to be able to book another Viking cruise! Read Less

We were looking for a cruise that would allow us to see a variety of Fjords and Scandinavian cities. We checked other cruises and cruise lines and ended up going with Viking because the itinerary offered a good combination. We had sailed with Viking on a River Cruise and wanted to try their Ocean cruises. Our room was a deluxe veranda which was fine. The bathroom was roomy with heated floors, the fridge was stocked with drinks and snacks that were included and the bed was comfortable, although we needed extra pillows. Storage and charging outlets were adequate. The main dining room was nice. The staff was attentive. The breakfast menu was fine, the same every day. The dinner menu had a selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts that did not change and also had menu choices that changed daily. The food was generally tasty, we had a few disappointments. The buffet was nice but there were a lot of lines and waiting. Sometimes the coffee service in the buffet was not great. We enjoyed the lunch and dessert options in the Explorer Lounge. Excursions: the included excursions were ok although some were more walking than was enjoyable for us. Attending the port talks was very informative. Taking the train to Berlin made for a long day. We were there during a heat wave, the train was not air conditioned, but the windows were able to be opened. However there were long stops both directions. We would recommend this cruise, the entire staff was great and we liked the lack of things like bingo and art auctions. Read Less

I chose this cruise because I have always had an interest in visiting Norway because of the scenic nature of the country. The scenery is really amazing from the fjords to the mountains of this great country. We saw so much in such a short time period with included and optional tours in 8 different countries. I was amazed at the beauty of Estonia and Russia. Only disappointment was not being able to dock at Gdansk Poland because of the weather conditions. I was particularly interested in Poland because of my husband's German ancestry. Everything about the 'Viking Sea' was top notch. We where spoiled by the service offered .... room service, dining, entertainment, friendly staff and general organization. We liked the size of the ship, the rooms where awesome with the balcony to slip outside and take in the view. I really enjoyed the nightly entertainment, every bit as good as taking in a theatrical production in Toronto for me. Everything was top notch. Of course I would go again & actually have already booked an Alaskan Cruise for 2020 with Viking. Read Less

I have been on a Viking cruise before and really liked it. I have always wanted to go to Norway so this was a perfect choice. The ship was excellent in every way. The food was also excellent, I especially liked The Chef's Table. We ended up going there twice and both meals were spectacular. The entertainment on board was perfect in that it had a calming quality to it. Our cabin was nice in every way including the staff that cleaned and made sure we were comfortable. All of the activities were very much as described. I did lots of biking and enjoyed all of it. It was always nice to get back to the ship to relax. The concert at the port of Oslo will probably be the best concert I will experience in my life. It was such a treat to be entertained by Ah-Ha and Andrea Bocelli. The only difficulty we had it that we were traveling as friends. All correspondence treated us as partners. Only one of us would get messages and we don't see each other that often so we felt there was a lack of communication. Even the gifts on board, which were very nice, seemed to be for a shared household. This trip is a memory I will always cherish. Read Less

I am the third passenger of cabin 618. At first I wanted to watch the Northern Lights but I wasn't that keen on travelling by boat(!) . Nevertheless I have to admit that I will never regret my choice. Everybody on board was nice and welcoming and helpful. The boat was clean and comfortable. The food was delicious and abundant and the waitresses and waitors always ready to help us. There were a lot of different excursions to please anybody, the entertainment and the activities on board were diverse and good as well. There was no fly in the ointment since the weather was sunny all over the journey except on the first day and the last day! I personnally had a problem when I set foot on board and the captain and the clercs at the reception did all their best to help me and I thank them for their compassion and their effective help to find me a solution which would suit me( and my dream!) I had always wanted to see the Northern Lights and I'm glad I had been able to make my dream come true. For sure I will recommend this cruise ( I've already started doing it!) To finish I'd like to add a few words about our French guide Anne Guillaud . She happened to be very competent and effective and humane. She answered all our questions and she gave us very instructive lectures every day and she also helped me personnally beautifully when I needed it. She IS an experienced guide who knows Norway, its cullture and its history . Thank you for reading me .M.B Read Less

There were so many interesting locations to view and visit while enjoying luxurious service, dining and comfort. Viking spoils their passengers. Service is impeccable and wonderful selection of restaurants onboard. Cabin service is excellent, from cleanliness to accommodation. This was my fourth trip with Viking River and Ocean cruise and I’m now planning my fifth. Viking makes traveling so easy for you by collecting you at the airport and retuning for your flight home. It’s obvious Viking takes the time to properly train their employees. I actually walked into my once and found someone cleaning under my bed. You’ll find from the stewards, bartenders, servers will help you with anything you ask. The concierge will go out of their way to grant any request you have. Viking has wonderful entertainment. From dancing, singing, comedy etc. to a large current selection of movie and tv programs. After a day of fascinatingly excursions it’s nice to have dinner in or out of your room and then relax with a movie. Again, I’ll say Viking absolutely spoils their guests. Read Less

We chose this Cruise to travel with another couple and made the reservation over a year ahead. The quality of ship, crew, services and experiences was exceptional. We enjoyed the amenities of the ship and quality of the design of the ship. Our prior experience with Viking has been on European River Cruises. The ability of us to be on the same tour bus was not able to be accommodated consistently.. Many times, much to our frustration, we found that we were assigned different busses for a given tour. We found some local guides were much better than others. Uneven utilization of audio devices was disconcerting as some guides said they had requested one but had been denied. We wish that they would not fill the tenders to capacity when shuttling for tours. More trips with less crowding would be much better. We found the internet connection speeds to be inconsistent. I would think this should be able to be improved. We particularly enjoyed Luis on the guitar and Dr. Lori talking about Viking history. Read Less

We sailed with the Viking Sea from London to Britain and then to the multiple Fjords in Norway. We were very impressed with everything Viking. Everything from embarkation to post cruise tour to Iceland went exceptionally well. It took us a few days to get used to the quality of service we experienced. Everytime we took a shower, our steward would come in when we left and clean the entire bathroom and place all new towels. Every time we messed up our bed linen the sheets were always straightened and changed if needed. The food service in all Dining options was exceptional. At the start of our trip we thought we would want to have special dinners in the Restaurant or Manfredi's or at The Chef's Table. However, we ended up eating most often at The World Cafe "buffet" area, as the food was incredible. I love seafood, and there were always, crab legs and shrimp and sea bass or so many other delightful options. My husband and our friends we were with, also always found their favorites with so many options from salads to pizza to Prime rib to steaks or lamb. The service was great everywhere and even at the buffet after making our choices the servers still brought us wines and coffee's and bread or anything we requested. Everyone treated us like we were family. Loved It!!! The entertainment was all done by staff, from the Director to the assistant Director to other servers and staff. We were tremendously impressed by the talent that we were treated to. Viking knew the audience and played to them with Elvis Presley impressionist and many other awesome shows. Amazing. We also enjoyed the evening bar singers and that atmosphere. Our ship was so impressive and spotless! The infinity pool off the front deck was awesome and the pool on the top deck was perfectly heated. On the evening of the Midnight sun we were able to see the sun go down and come back up within two minutes on the same spot! The most impressive was the nature around us, such as the Sisters Falls and the hugh troll face carved into the side of the mountain. We enjoyed and excursion everday and always were totally impressed not only with nature but also with the preparations that Viking had made that made every trip PERFECT!!! We participated in the Iceland Excursion and was so impressive. Wow! Four days where we saw Geysers that erupted every 5 minutes to a Volcano crater we walked around, and a Hugh water fall with a salmon latter, as well as swimminng in the Blue Lagoon and having a facial with the mineral's found in the Lagoon. Writing about all of this makes me want to do it all over again. Absolute Perfection all the way around!!! You may think that because this review is so good that I am just a positive person. This is not quite true as people who know me know my opinion needs to be well earned. This one was! Read Less

This was our first Viking cruise and we have already booked another one for 2019. Viking certainly sets the standard for Ocean cruising and ship amenities. We had been on another cruise line that also catered to adults and was a small ship. The 900-1000 passenger ships are much more accessible and you don't feel like you are waiting in line to eat or running into people as you move about the ship. Viking's restaurants are excellent, well spaced out around the ship and Viking does not charge extra for their specialty restaurants or the wine and beer served with lunch and dinner. I'm sure that cost is built into the fee, but it is nice not to get a huge bill at the end of the cruise. We enjoyed the choice of shore excursions but wish we could have spent more time in some ports. The included panoramic bus tours are OK but you don't get to see a lot. The more personal excursions are more expensive and sometimes fill up fast. There were great musical opportunities on this cruise - a Grieg piano recital, an evening performance at the ballet in St. Petersburg and a Sebelius concert in Helsinki. There are more extensive reviews listed but I would agree with many of them that all the crew took exceptional pride in themselves and their jobs and Viking holds them to a high standard. Everyone is always greeted with a smile. Read Less

So here is a (long) review of the Viking Sun Homelands cruise we just finished this week. I tried to break it all down as best I could. I would highly recommend anyone who would like this amazing experience to book it! Final views of Viking Homelands Cruise 1- We are aware that our joy about this holiday is influenced by the wonderful and unusual weather we experienced for the entire 32 days in Europe (except misty in Iceland and 50 F) (we spent 10 days in the U.K. with family). The temps were mid 70’s to high 80’s the whole time, with only one 5 minute rain shower in Stockholm. 2- Viking Sun. The ship is amazing. It is well laid out, and well decorated. The hard working staff is always cleaning and polishing. We enjoyed the pianist Olga, the string group, and Luis the guitarist being in different lounges each evening. The nightclub was fun each night and a great place to wind down. Iskra was the bartender who kept up with us- we had Silver Spirits drink package and it was nice to be able to experience different drinks whenever. (Rule of thumb- if you drink 2-3 liquor or upgraded wines per day, it is $$ worthwhile). 3- Stateroom. We had a Penthouse Veranda room- perfect size, lots of storage and drawers. Our cabin steward Fery and his assistant Jayson kept up with our every need. 4- Entertainment. We were very impressed with the quality of the evening entertainment. The cruise director, Bevin, and his assistant Matthew were everywhere! From morning excursions to port talks to evenings, they were always on point for what passengers needed. The entertainment in the theater included a magician, a comedian, and a singer that has played Jean Valjean in Les Mis in West End, so you know he is a powerful talent. The resident production team consisted of 4 highly talented and energetic performers who rocked the theater with a 69’s show, a musicals themed show and a Beatles/ABBA show (we WERE in Stockholm). They were also consistently visible and great ambassadors for the ship. There were other activities during the days and evenings- history and art lectures, team trivia, dance lessons, and more. 4- Food. We ate mostly at the World Cafe buffet- always great choices- sushi, crab legs, shrimp, Prime rib, mussels, tenderloin, oysters, whatever. The menus were posted on the online app so you could make your decision. We ate at the main restaurant a few times, the pool grill a few times, and Manfredi’s, the Italian specialty place once. It was fantastic. We didn’t get to the Chefs Table, the specialty restaurant with a set menu that changes every 2 or 3 days- the day we had reservations, Dennis wasn’t feeling very well- he caught a cold and was not up to it. 5- Shore excursions. We took mostly the included Viking and they were so well organized. Every stop had a free walking or bus tour, plus shuttles included if needed to get into and out of town. One of the best was the Berlin included- we thought we would be dumped on a train, dumped in Berlin, and then find our way back to the train on our own. Instead, the train was chartered and we had a local guy with us the whole time. When we got to Berlin, we were given an orientation bus tour for an hour before we were let off at a central square to wander on our own. After 2 hours or so, we met back at the square, and were bussed to the train. On the train back, we were served wine, beer and snacks, complimentary. It was much more than we expected for the free inclusion. We took 2 of the Viking paid excursions- Pulpit Rock and the Flam railroad. I would recommend both of those. We did a 2 day highlights tour with SPB tours in St Petersburg, which also gave us an evening out with “Go Out Like a Local”- we went to some trendy bars with a 30 something guide and then took an evening canal cruise- private boat- just 5 of us plus our guide, Russian rock music and a bottle of vodka. Skol! 6- a bit about each stop -Iceland. We did the pre-extension but Viking had us in a hotel too far from town. The Golden Circle was remarkable, with the plate tectonics going on, and the volcanic landscapes got the science geology nerd in me all happy. The Blue Lagoon was quite an experience as well -Bergen. Norway was on my bucket list and I understand why. The scenery all through Norway is breathtaking. Take the funicular up to the top of the mountain for great views. -Other 2 stops in Norway. Eidfjord has the Flam railroad which goes up and around the mountains and waterfalls. At Stavanger, we took the small boat out to look straight up those glacially formed cliffs. -Aalborg was just a few hours but another quaint medieval town. Copenhagen was a bit bigger and we took the walking tour and then a canal cruise. -Talinn Estonia- the history of that region is tough. The economy is struggling because of trade problems -Berlin- train and a chance to experience the history of a crazy man and his demented dreams and then how the Cold War took a toll on those in east Berlin. -Gdansk Poland. Another chunk of history. The ship was berthed at the spot where WW2 began. Sobering. Take a look at the Polish amber- it’s very beautiful -St Petersburg- this was actually my least favorite place, but a visit I wouldn’t have changed for anything. This is a huge city, crazy traffic, so many tourists, so much standing in line to get into all the important spots- Hermitage, Catherine’s Palace, Peterhof, Spilled Blood. -Helsinki- One of my favorite places. Very laid back, nice port town. Lots of green space and very nice people -Stockholm- Tied with Bergen for my favorite. This is a great city that doesn’t seem so big. Hop On Hop Off will get you anywhere you want to go. We stayed here a few extra days because there was so much to see here, and the cruise was ending. Vasa Museum, Abba Museum, IceBar- so much to see! All in all= I'm in the Viking cult! I have drunk the Koolaid and I'm all in. We have booked a river cruise for 2020. Hooray! Read Less

Embarkation and disembarkation went very smooth and on board Services even arranged for a car to take us to our stop over in London. Great help so everything went smooth. I can't say enough about the Ship, from the decor, facilities, crew, shopping and especially the entertainment. The pianist , guitar player and all the entertainment was so very enjoyable. Our cabin was great, roomy and our cabin attendant Alvin? couldn't have been nicer. It seemed like he always had the little extra that was needed. Even though the weather and fog kind of worked against us somewhat the cruise was still such a joy because of the ship, crew and the little things that made it so enjoyable. It was nice also to have so many extras built into the cruise package, like the drinks at lunch and dinner meals. Our dinning room attendants and servers were above and beyond, "Vicky and his helpers" were outstanding. We just hated to leave the Ship. Looking forward to our next adventure. Read Less

Massages, and then time in the pools and saunas was very relaxing. I would highly recommend booking a massage, and definitely go down and use the spa area. The fitness room was nice as well as the outside walking track and the exercise equipment on the top deck. Since I try to eat a plant based whole food diet I was happy to find many good offerings in several of the restaurants on board the ship. So the Cruise to Norway, Scotland and England was marvelous. The first day when we arrived in Bergen we toured the ship. Our cabin was wonderful and the balcony let us go out and sit and see the city. The cabin seemed just right for two people. We walked around the Viking Star, saw the Restaurants, the Pool, the Lounge and everything was so nice. After dinner I left for a walk around Bergen. The town was amazing, the shops of different color, the Fort on the hill and all the sailing ships. After a stroll I looked at my watch and it was 22:30 so I thought it was time to head for the ship. As I turned and saw the sun setting in the west it looked more like 18:00. Back on the ship every day was a Port Talk where we learned about the next port and town we would visit. This helped us prepared for the Excursion the next day. Seeing the towns across Norway with the mountains and snow on them was beautiful. Visiting the Shetland Islands and seeing the ponies, the Orkney Islands and seeing the Ancient ruins, and Edinburgh with its Castles. Sailing to our last stop, London, we passed the Maunsell Sea Forts still standing and the Thames Barrier. Our last Excursion was the London Eye and the views of London are wonderful. Not sure when I will be on another Viking Cruise but I hope it's soon. Read Less

We had visited Sweden previously and wanted to see more of Scandinavia. We had been on two Viking River Cruises and loved them so we wanted to continue with Viking. We loved the educational and entertainment options on board. We also liked the logistical planning so some of the guests could attend a presentation while others went to dinner so everyone didn't go to dinner at the same time. Very clever. We didn't feel overwhelmed by the over 900 guests as there were so many things to do and places to hang out on board that the experience was comfortable and enriching. The river cruises had about 100 guests so we were concerned about the larger number, but we never felt overwhelmed by the much larger size of the voyage. The cabin staff were helpful, friendly and responsive to our requests. They all - the entire crew - were very professional and respectful throughout the voyage. The shore excursions were wonderful - so educational and well planned. The guides were knowledgeable and professional. The buses were clean and comfortable. We choose this cruise due to its itinerary and it being a working ship. The experience is therefore different, there are several stops every day and it's an interesting way to get to know more about the local culture. We thoroughly enjoyed this trip, visiting so many different cities and seeing the Northern Lights on the last day. The crew was excellent, very professional and friendly. The food was outstanding, even very thoughtful for the evening meals. This was our first cruise and for that we have enjoyed it very much. Our cruise was one way from Bergen to Kirkenes. This included New Year's Eve on the boat, which again was thought well through to provide entertainment and the right atmosphere on boat. There are plenty of excursions to choose from, which we recommend that you do some of these, they are well planned and give a good insight. The Point of Interest Activities on the outside Deck are definitely worthwhile. The only word of warning is to choose your cabin wisely. We just booked a basic Polar Outside and were on Deck 3. Although it says the MS Nordkapp has been refurbished in 2016, so it's overall in excellent and modern conditions, the same doesn't apply for Deck 3. Our cabin was still old school. Read Less

The 4 course evening meal was served at the table by the wonderful service staff, with style and humour. We saw the northern lights several days in a row, with regular announcements as to when they were visible, and there was an excellant guide on how to get the best pictures (with a reminder to enjoy the sight as well!) The chance to experience the polar night with the special twilight was spectacular with clear skies and incredible colours. (And you appreciate the sunrise when you cross the arctic circle back into daylight.) The excursions were well planned. I would recommend the husky sledging - incredible ride across the snow with only the sound of the barking of the dogs and the sledge sliding over the ice - an experience not to miss. The huskies were so friendly and obviousy loved to run. The staff were without exception friendly, helpful and cheerful throughout the journey, and our tour guide was entertaining (in three languages!) and very informative. Overall an incredible experience. Read Less

Love Viking & loved the itinerary! Many of the ports we had not visited before. Also loved the idea of a few sea days as this ship is so comfortable. We were just ready to enjoy all that Viking had to offer on this remarkable ship...as we had been on it just a year ago. However this was our 4th Viking cruise. I recommend Viking to everyone. We love the richly rewarding historic lectures on the culture of the areas we are visiting! No Casinos and picture pressure! Truly a relaxing adventure. The entire trip was so very enjoyable, from Bergen Norway to Barcelona Spain! Viking does everything to ensure your comfort & safety. We did have to forego our Falmouth England port because of weather but thanks Captain for thinking of our safety first! The employees/crew are so friendly and will go out of their way to help in any way. Need more hangers for your clothes, pillows...how many?...done! On other cruise ship I have had to pack extra hangers or layer everything! Food was for the most part outstanding! In each dining room we were treated like royalty! We didn't enjoy the Chef's Table so much and I heard the same from many other people, we were still hungry after 4 courses. The included wines served daily with meals were plentiful, excellent quality & variety. Also appreciated the plentiful water whether on ship or off! Entertainment & lectures were simply outstanding! Viking only fell short on the included tours in a couple ports. River included tours are handled much better & make provision for a "leisure" tour selection for folks who have walking issues. The free time in Knokke, Belgium was a waste, very little open, prices no one could afford in very exclusive shops that were! Couldn't wait to board the bus! I never heard a positive comment. Wish we could have just explored the historical little town of Damme, I think it was, that we drove though. Other tours were exceptional! Guess you can't win them all but I think Viking needs to re examine this aspect. These included tours makes Viking unique in the the cruise industry but that could change quickly. Also our last day in Barcelona lacked communication on the optional "An Evening of Flamenco" ( not worth the $139 pp) as we had to switch docks late in the afternoon and that caused all types of confusion. They combined our included city tour with it as we had to change the time 2 1/2 hours and we wouldn't have known this if we hadn't have ask! Thus our city tour ended up in the dark, with very low visibility, right before our dinner. Hated to disembark and head for the USA...Looking forward to cruise #5 soon! Read Less

Great value for an itinerary that covered several areas that we had not visited before. The offer of two guests for one fare with free air was too great a temptation. The trip was excellent except for somewhat rough seas for a couple of days. It could have been a lot worse! The excursions were well planned, and for the most part were interesting and informative. The service on the ship was excellent. Our cabin was kept spotless and the dining was always good. Most of the dishes were very good, but other options for special order were also available. One evening I ordered a New York strip steak that was as good as any I have ever had--even at some very expensive restaurants. The entertainment was also excellent, as were the informative talks about European history and environmental issues. We especially enjoyed the entertainers. The three young female vocalists were especially talented and performed in a most professional manner. The string trio also was an elegant touch to the trip. We have been on a number of ocean and river cruises, but the cruise director on this one was the best I have ever seen. Read Less

My husband and I are both Scandinavian descent so we thought it would be fun to learn more about the Vikings and see where they lived. This is our second cruise with Viking Ocean and we knew that we really loved our other cruise to the Caribbean last December. We loved the decor of the Viking Ocean ships. The deluxe veranda rooms were a tad small but were well-appointed and clean, clean, clean. The linens were absolutely first class. The bed was very comfortable and there was sufficient closet space for all our things. The bathroom was surprisingly roomy with heated floors which came in handy since we were sailing the North Atlantic and Northern Countries. The weather was a lot colder than other cruises we have taken, but the room's HVAC was very efficient and responsive. Be sure to lift the desk top and collect the binoculars---we didn't find them until the day before we disembarked. The complimentary self-service laundry came in handy. They even supplied the detergents. Be sure to choose a good time on a day when you are not at sea. It seemed everyone chose that day to do their laundry. The food was wonderful. What more can you say?! Reserve your times early for Chef's Table and Manfredi's but we never were refused a request for our favorite time of 6:30pm. You won't be disappointed with the included excursions. We took 2 optional tours and loved them. The entertainers were terrific and very personable. Be sure to sign up for the tours of the Bridge, Galley and Back-Stage...great. Best of all were the crew. They cannot be beat. Fabulous. Read Less
