Everything on this cruise was fantastic. The logistics were on the mark 100%; Viking has their act together. From the time they greet you to when you leave at the airport they are there to help you with everything. We extended our stay in Paris and when they dropped us off at the airport we were greeted by a Viking rep who helped us get to the check in area and the security area. Everything was on time, smooth and no problems. You use the same bus, have the same driver the entire cruise, great setup. They make sure everything goes as planned and you always know where you are supposed to be and when you are supposed to be there. I almost felt like we were on a private yacht with the excellent service; they make sure you get off the ship ok, and always greet you with a treat when you get back on board. The food was great and the cabins are nice. I have told everyone they need to go on a river cruise and to use Viking. Read Less

This was our first river cruise and my first time in Europe. We sailed on the longship Odin and was extremely pleased. This was nothing like a large cruise ship (which I have sailed on many many times - NCL, Carnival, Royal Caribbean). At first I was a little leery thinking there wouldn't be anything to do on the ship. Well...I am VERY thankful there wasn't big time shows, casinos, pools, etc. This was a beautiful journey where the destination is the prize. We spent so much time sightseeing at so many different ports that we were always tired by the time we got back to the ship. Because there were only 165 people on board, it was very intimate and we got to know so many of the other passengers. The meals on the ship were very tasty and plentiful. I had a nice glass of wine with dinner at no extra charge, which was very nice. The crew went above and beyond for every single passenger, and I noticed how they all help each other out. They seemed to be like a large traveling family themselves. We had a cabin with a veranda, which was very nice, but as it turned out, we didn't really need a veranda because we would go to the top deck to be with all our "new" friends and watch the scenery go by as we travelled to the next port. The shore excursions were perfect and very informative with the Audio Vox that everyone used to hear the tour guides. I can't think of a single thing that I didn't like and I would highly recommend a Viking River Cruise - well worth the money. Read Less

The Cabin A was smaller than other Cabins I have had on previous river cruises. The service was great and the cabin was very well taken care of and in addition our cabin person made towel animals for us every day. The ports and shore excursions were very good but sometimes we didn't have enough time to investigate on our own and too much time, i. e., Trier, for personal time. Entertainment and activities were enjoyable and food was good except I didn't care for the German food. I was also unaware that on Saturday we would spend a lot of time in a bus traveling to Paris. The booklet and email I received regarding MyVikingCruise did not mention this at all and I was completely surprised by this fact. When we arrived at the Meridien hotel in Paris, I was not at all happy with that accommodation but the Viking people were very helpful. I was on the Odin. The Jarl was last November 2015. I would not want to travel with children. I am very happy that the cruise was only 101 people and no children. I'd like to be able to have other books to read except for the travel books located in the library. I would go again to Spain and also to Mississippi if eventually offered by Viking. I'd also like to travel go England and Scotland if this was offered by Viking. I do appreciate the ease of making the reservation and information given by the travel people but be more forthcoming with information i.e., bus trips for long hours. Read Less

We have taken five Viking cruises to date and are already signed up the sixth. Rating the trips on we have had on Viking I would rate this the lowest. Usually their cruise run like clock work with never a flaw to find. The pre cruise extension in Luzern was wonderful and they put you up in a great hotel overlooking Lake Luzern. We arrived in Basel to begin our cruise and were not impressed with the docking location, in the middle of recycling complex. Check-in was a breeze and our room was ready when we arrived around noon. The evening another Viking ship, the Sum tied up alongside of us. Their air conditioning exhaust, the width of our room, was immediately adjacent to our veranda. This took away our view that we paid extra for but the worse part was the noise all night long. It was so loud we could not talk to each other. This happened two more times on our trip. Another item that detracted from the trip were some of the long walks from the ship to get to the excursion buses, at one stop the walk was over 20 minutes from the ship to the bus and the same on the way back to the ship, plus the 40 some odd stairs to climb at the bus location. The excursions were nice but were not organized as in the past. Ten to twenty minutes of free time at most and then one with an hour and 45 minutes on a day that all of the shops were closed due a national holiday plus no fault of theirs it was raining and the buses were no were to be found so everyone got soaked. In Paris at the end of the trip there must have been three Viking trips in and about Paris at once and they all used the same location for the bus pickup. This made for total confusion and it did not help that the tour guides were actually yelling at people if they got on the wrong bus which happen a number of times. Usually on Viking there is time when you return to the ship for a cocktail or a little relaxation but that did not happen on this trip, when we arrived home we were exhausted. This is just not up what we expect from our past Viking experiences. Read Less

This cruise was a gift to me from my husband, to revisit my roots. I was born in Basel, Switzerland and left from Le Harvre, France to immigrate to the United States of America as a child. My desire was to replicate the pictures I had from Basel, so this was to be an enjoyable cruise for my husband and I, but I was also a woman on a mission– to see and photograph my roots. Anyway– we were on the Viking 'Odin' which afforded us luxury and a perfect home-away-from-home. Our stateroom was always kept immaculate by our 'housekeeper' Eloisa, and our meals were always 5-star delicious treats, served by friendly and efficient servers. The size of the number of guests on board- under 190, made it personable. We enjoyed the excursions offered to us by our Ship's Director- Dianna and made the most of them. The cruise ended in Trier, where we all boarded buses to our next destination: PARIS! That city was unique! We stayed at Le Meridien Etoile, with a Paris extension. Our room was clean, but we had problems with our room keys the entire time. I still am not sure what the problem was. The city tour along with our own touring using the Metro was simple and painless. I am so very glad that I had gone online three weeks prior our leaving the states and reserved tickets for the Eiffel Tower. The final day of our 'cruise' ended far too quickly, but it was indeed a delight! Read Less

We stared our trip with a pre-stay in Lucerne organized by Viking Cruises. The pick up at the airport in Zurich gave us the opportunity to see sights on our way to Lucerne. The Schweizerhof Hotel was fabulous. Location was right on the Lake. From there you could stand next to palm trees and see the snow covered Alps. Lucerne was a wonderful city, and with the Viking guided tour we got a good feel for the city and explored a lot on our own. Since all was booked through Viking, they then transported us to the ship in Basel. This was our third Viking cruise so we knew to expect really good guides at each of the stops. We were not disappointed. They timed our walks through the cities so we would have special experiences in each port. I am more impressed each time I cruise with Viking with the quality of their shore excursions. I walk slowly and always sign up for their leisurely group. It is so nice to have that option. We ended in Trier, then a bus to see Luxemburg, and on to Paris for two nights in Le Meridien Etoile. Great area for interesting restaurants, and a nice walk to the Arc de Triumph The ship was a Viking Longship. I really loved waking up and going to the lounge to have a couple of cups of Latte while my husband woke up. With the machine I could make it as weak as I like it - half water and half latte. I loved watching the Rhine and the castles as we cruised from the Lounge. This time when we booked all of the full balcony rooms were already taken so we booked a French Balcony. We decided that we do not like a French Balcony, and the full balcony is definitely worth the extra cost. Viking staff is always so helpful and really want to make the trip a special experience for you. The food has a nice regional touch, but with some choices for those that want more traditional food. I love the way the whole ship is invited each evening to learn the plans for tomorrow's activities, followed by the chef telling you what his dinner recommendations are. We normally spent so much time enjoying dinner, talking with the new folks we met at dinner, and the complementary wine with dinner that we just went to bed, and missed the evening entertainment. We have learned that booking the air, pre-stay, and cruise with Viking means you are fully taken care of. They pick you up at the airport, take you to the hotel, then ship, then back to airport.
