We enjoyed this cruise with my parents, celebrating a milestone anniversary with them. It exceeded all of our expectations! From the friendliness of the staff, to the wonderful meals, to the fantastic excursions, to the cabin we stayed in...everything was top notch! The servers, stewards & bartenders quickly learned our names & our preferences. We went on each of the daily excursions, as well as two of the optional ones & enjoyed each one - not to be missed! The tour guides were so knowledgeable! The cruise director talks each night describing the next day's events was very helpful. Our absolute favorite day was the day on the boat that we sailed past all the castles & churches - history coming to life! There were so many choices at all of the mealtimes, both in types of food & where to dine. Evening entertainment was fun - we enjoyed the music trivia night. The ship, rooms & dining areas were all very clean. Our trip was delayed by weather so we missed the first day of the cruise & once we caught up to the boat, the staff went above & beyond to welcome us & help us get settled in. Would highly recommend Viking & will certainly be traveling with them again!! Read Less

We had been wanting to do a European river cruise for quite a few years. We had been receiving Viking literature and finally decided to book a trip. We added on a Lucerne pre-excursion. It was a great way to get to Europe early to explore and get accustomed to the time zone difference. Viking was spot on with all the details. All their t's were crossed and their i's were dotted. We felt like royalty from the moment we got off the plane. The ship was wonderful and had all the amenities one would need. Our cabin was a comfortable retreat at the end of a long day of exploring. And the deck was a bonus for relaxing in the evening or watching the beautiful countryside go by while sailing. The tours throughout the cruise were top notch. The free tours were just as fabulous as the paid tours. The food on the ship was fabulous in both the dining room and the Aquavit. Their customer service was wonderful and top notch. As an example, while we sailed through the Rhine Gorge, it was a cool, crisp morning; they came around with blankets and hot cocoa (with a little extra "warmth" to add, if desired). The staff was amazing and most remembered our names by Day 2. They were always smiling and very attentive. We would do another Viking cruise in a heartbeat. Thanks Viking for making our dream come true!! Read Less

We chose this cruise from Basel to Amsterdam because of the diversity of the the ports and we were not disappointed. From the Swiss Alps to the below sea level Holland, every view and port were extraordinary. From the moment we arrived, every staff member made us feel appreciated and special. Every local tour guide was knowledgeable, personable and entertaining! We loved hearing their stories and better understanding their history, culture and architecture. The food was fabulous... breakfast, lunch and dinner!!! Chef Bobby will forever be remembered. His humor and passion for his craft were infectious. We primarily cruised at night so we could get to our next location. But the Middle Rhine... included daytime cruising past numerous castles and other sites. We appreciated the Activity Director's running commentary abouttes we were passing. Even though we had a standard cabin, it had plenty of storage to help us keep our belongings organized. The bed was comfy and the bathroom had every amenity we needed. The public areas offered plenty of places to sit, enjoy the view and visit with friends. Read Less

I enjoyed last years Danube cruise so much I had no hesitation to re-enlist with Viking. However, since ours was a last minute choice I WOULD HAVE TRIED ANOTHER LINE IF ONE Had been available. I received no discount for signing on to a previously cancelled stateroom. We were on the bottom level, whereas last year we had a French balcony. We feel the French balcony was not worth the extra charge even if we could have gotten one. The ship , cabin, dining were comparable to last year although I felt two of the dinner meals I had were average. Last years activities were only slightly better. Service was on par with last year. I I felt Viking air might have gotten us non stop to Amsterdam from JFK ( maybe a result of a last minute reservation To say we saw 4 countries is really not true. You see nothing worth mentioning in Amsterdam and the cruise through the Netherlands was dull. Didn’t see anything of Basel Switzerland, just busfrom boat to airport. We did not travel with anyone We would not go again perhaps another river in Europe One word regarding superior seamamanship : excellent He got is through when other boats couldn’t get through Regarding an optional tour in Strasbourg Pricey 179 euros each but definitely the excursion highlight Read Less

We lived in Germany for 5 years and decided to revisit some of our favorite places. This Viking cruise, our first, seemed a great way to go and it was. We flew into Basel and Viking met us and transferred us to our ship with ease. Luggage quickly delivered to cabin. Lunch was immediately available. We loved the daily excursions and walked between 6 and 9 miles per day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner service were excellent. Because of the many options for food, we were able to eat like kings and queens and yet get home without gaining any weight. Wine and beer included with lunch and dinner at no additional cost. Leaving the ship was super easy. Bags put into hall and when we got to the end of the pier, our bags were sorted by cabin number and staff immediately found and loaded into our transportation. We did a 3 day extension in Amsterdam and when we were ready to leave, Viking arranged for a car to take us to the airport. Great trip. Read Less

The boat was Kept up and fresh all along the way. The food and it’s variety was really good. The staff gets 10 stars. They were absolutely superb. Every one of them. The daily included excursions were great and just the right mix of adventure and time. We loved everyone of them. Entertainment lacked a little but not a show stopper for us. Would have been mice to have a show or 2 onboard. I don’t have a negative word to say. This trip and boat by far met our expectations with a few surprises. We would take Viking again and again. The boats and the staff and the excursions and the food were the best Can’t wait to go again Read Less

We want to do several European trips and started with this one on the Rhine. Going back to go on the Danube cruise with Viking later this year. The included tours were really good, interesting tour guides, a lot of background and history provided at the places we went. The Viking staff was (by and large) outstanding, my wife even tipped one of the waiters 10 Euros as he remembered our names so well. The only not so good comment is that on a few occasions at dinner, when they say that wine and beer are included, I was completely ignored at dinner with an empty wine glass. Even those at the other end of the table were served and I was ignored. Maybe you have to go to the end of the room and pour it yourself. No onboard pool, fitness room or fitness activities other than a walking track around the top deck. Read Less

Never considered, nor had any interest in this type of cruise/vacation. Suddenly after receiving an email with offer of special pricing for cruise & airfare, we decided to "go for it". So glad we did. Viking made us feel like their only passenger from the very first day until our return home. They really know how to manage every angle of your vacation, while at the same time totally staying out of your way. From meeting us at the airport on arrival, to stacking our luggage in front of our bus prior to disembarkation, we were totally convinced Viking truly deserves their reputation for being #1. Ship was awesome, and service at the level of a 5 Star hotel/restaurant. Our suite cabin was beautiful and just the right size. We definitely recommend the 2 room suite over a single. Ports were well planned and thought out, as were the shore excursions. Buses were like new, clean, comfortable and the drivers never once had us wondering if we were going to survive the trip. Our only issue was related to the crowds we encountered while on tour(s). Not sure how this could be avoided by Viking or anyone else for that matter; perhaps less famous/popular locations. Of course that too would to some degree defeat the purpose of the trip, so just be prepared for lots of people and lines. The best feature of the trip was perhaps the least noticed; the crew. These people are truly wonderful and so professional. Many we probably never even saw, such as engineering, navigating, etc. The entire onboard staff was professional, ready to assist us at any time, in any way possible. Ship was clean, quite and felt like it wasn't even moving most of time. Food was beyond our expectation and the service was head spinning. Many knew and called us by our first names. How they do that is a mystery, but really highlights Viking's promise of being first class from beginning to end. Read Less

This was an outstanding cruise up the Rhine River from Basel to Amsterdam. We opted for the optional 3 days in Lucern Switzerland before heading to Basel to begin our cruise and we're glad we did! What a fantastic stay we had in the city. So glad we took the Stansehorn Cable Car up into the Swiss mountains - tremendous views!! We visited Breisach Germany where we stopped in a wonderful place called Hofgut-Sternen. Here we purchased a cuckoo clock and saw some beer steins, glassware and Christmas decorations all made by local craftsmen. We also attended a demonstration on how to make Black Forest Cake. The village of Colmar Germany is extremely picturesque and not to be missed. We saw Strasbourg France where we got to visit Europes' Parliament Building and the towns cathedral. Next up was Mannheim, Heidelberg (yet another awesome cathedral) & Rudesheim Germany where we took part in the Dine in Rudesheim am Rhein tour. Great dinner and great wine! Then it was on to Koblenz and Cologne where we took part in the Cologne Beer culture Dinner. The highlight of Cologne (and perhaps our entire trip) was the amazing Cathedral. We finished our journey in Kinderdijk then Amsterdam. Every shore excursion we took was top notch, allowing us extra time to explore on our own in each of the towns we visited. The food and accommodations on board the Viking Ingvi were terrific as was the entire staff - very friendly and efficient. All in all a most memorable trip that will bring us back to our next Viking River Cruise in the not too distant future! Read Less

We had not been in Western Germany, we’d had no time for a vacation during the previous year, and so when Viking offered a half-price sale, we chose this cruise as a quick getaway. Viking has things nailed: we received our paperwork a month before we sailed, someone was waiting for us and shuttled us to our ship. We boarded a bit later due to a flight delay, but an excellent dinner and beautiful cabin was waiting for us. Our room was outstanding. Well layed out and nicely furnished. The steward assigned to our room was amazing - if we asked, it was there. The ship itself was beautiful. The entryway and main staircase were gorgeous. Little nooks were placed in inviting areas for everyone to relax. The dining? Excellent. The food was delicious, perfectly prepared, and service was impeccable. Our servers - Gilbert, Rein, and Chris - did a great job! They remembered our names within a day, made wonderful recommendations, and kept our wine flowing (which were wonderful local wines!). We went on every included excursion and one extra excursion. The guides for all were knowledgeable and fun. We went to some lovely places. The cruise day through the Middle Rhine was outstanding. Wanted two things that they didn’t have: someplace to work out, and the ability to watch the World Cup! Need to add that. Read Less

It's been several weeks since our cruise down the Rhine on the Viking Ingvi and I still think about it constantly. The scenery, the wonderful people we met on board, the exquisite meals, and most of all the excursions on shore that brought us into the fascinating towns and cities of Switzerland, France, Germany and The Netherlands. Our Viking ship was immaculate and the crew was attentive and eager to please. The waitstaff were a joy, in part because their individual personalities were allowed to shine through: some reserved, some sincere, some funny, including one waiter who sang and danced between tables. It made us happy every time we sat down to eat. And there was the staff that we rarely saw: those who worked and kept our cabin in perfect condition. The tour guides who showed us the sights on land were all very good. There is just so much to see in these marvelous cities that it's overwhelming at times. We did have many hours of free time to explore on our own and those hours of discovery gave us some of our greatest memories. In fact we want to do another Viking tour in Europe and when we do we will be ready to take even greater advantage of time to explore. Read Less

My husband and I were celebrating our 70 birthdays. It was our first cruise, and it couldn't have been better. Everything went smoothly, flights, travel to and boarding the ship, coordinating our shore excursions, etc. Our cabin was very nice, with a balcony, plenty of storage for clothes and luggage, and even a heated bathroom floor. We had all our meals on board the ship, and loved every single one. The food was amazing, and the service impeccable. We took only the shore excursions that came with the cruise, and they were wonderful. They are wonderfully organized and most all of the tour guides were pleasant and knowledgable. We were going to add one, but we waited until we were onboard, and found it was already booked. It's important to research the add ons early before your cruise, and book them ahead of time. The entertainment aboard ship was really nice, from jazz guitarist, to classical violinists, to name that tune competition. All were very worth going to. We also loved that they featured regional food items from the areas that we were touring. We loved every minute of our cruise with Viking, and are really hoping to schedule another next year. My wife and I started out by spending 3 nights in Luzern, Switzerland. This was a magnificent city with plenty to do and see. We then were bussed to Basil, Switzerland to board the Viking Ingvi. The Viking river boats are extremely special, as are the shore excursions. The crew was exceptional. We have never been on any cruise like this one. After Switzerland, we visited France, Germany and the Netherlands. Air travel to and from Europe from Chicago was a problem with the airlines, but we were able to still get to everywhere we wanted to go. Viking staff went out of their way to make up for flight delays. We have never had finer service anywhere before. River cruising is more intimate. We made a lot of friends and got to know almost everyone on the boat, including the crew. I recommend a standard suite with balcony on the starboard side if traveling from Basil, or on the port side if originating in Amsterdam. you get to see more. The one day cruising through Germany was a special treat seeing all the castles and visiting one of them. We highly recommend Viking River Cruises for the exceptional quality of their tours.
