Overall grade: B- It was a rocky start. Two months before the start of the river cruise, we received in the mail a personalized brochure from Viking, giving us a day-by-day breakdown of the schedule, excursions, ship information, etc. It noted that at the start of the cruise in Basel, the ship could be departing from any of three different locations. Seeing as how there still were two months before the cruise, this wasn’t a huge concern. About two weeks before we were scheduled to leave, Viking sent us our cruise documents in a digital format. We printed everything, and again the departure information in Basel was the same. I assumed that eventually, Viking would let us know where to find the ship. Bad assumption on my part. For those cruise customers who are part of Viking’s pre-cruise extension, this is of no concern because you get on a bus at the hotel and it takes you to the ship. However, for those who make their own travel arrangements, you’re on your own. I suspect this probably isn’t a major problem in most cities where ships dock at the same area, but in this case, where there were three choices, it can be an arduous way to start a vacation. Luckily for my wife and I, there was a Viking desk in the hotel we stayed at the night before the start of the cruise and a Viking rep gave us the departure location. Others didn’t have it so easy. At dinner on our first night aboard, we met a couple who simply hailed a cab and told the driver to go to each of the locations, figuring they’d hit the right one eventually. So I wasn’t even on board yet and I was ready to give Viking an F. All in all, things went smoothly. Excursions: Pretty good, though we had one hiccup on one day when the ship had to go in for repairs after hitting another vessel in a lock two days earlier and sustaining a 4-foot gash in front. Cruisers had two options: stay on the ship while it went for repairs, or take a two-hour tour and then spend four hours on your own until the ship returned. Viking gave everyone a $25 onboard credit for the inconvenience. Excursions ran on time and were well planned with plenty of buses and organized procedures. Food: It’s not as good as the chef would have you believe. He spoke to passengers one night early in the week and said that evening’s special, a filet with a Roquefort sauce, was “amazing.” It was, IMHO, quite average. He used the same word, “amazing,” one day to describe the potato soup. In Cologne, we had the chance to have lunch in town; we tried the potato soup at a pub and THAT was fabulous – a gazillion times better than what we had onboard. For dinner on the final evening, the chef recommended a brisket entrée; that turned out to be a horrible choice; mine was undercooked by two hours and not even close to being done correctly. At the end of the week, there wasn’t anything we had that made us think, “Wish we had a chance to have that again.” Food grade: C- Overall service: Mostly good. Room attendants refreshed the room quickly. Service in the lounge was inconsistent. The bartender was outstanding; I gave him my room number once on the first day and that was the last time he asked for it. I have no idea how he did that with nearly 190 customers. Table service in the lounge was spotty. Sometimes there were more servers than customers; at other times, you had to go to the bar to get a drink because there were no servers. Dining room servers were pleasant. Read Less

This trip was for our anniversary that we were not sure we would make as my husband has cancer. This was also our first River Cruises. We so happy with not only the service and the accommodation but more than anything the Crew. The Program Director Candi and her team were fantastic everything from the organization of the excursion to the entertainment. The shore excursions, we great and the knowledge that was shared by the local guides was so helpful in understanding the local culture. The entertainment on board was also perfect. This was truly a trip of a lifetime. They truly made us feel welcome and like were part of the family. We are already thinking about another trip, I can only hope that it will be just as wonderful. Thank you, Viking, for a wonderful vacation. Thank you again for a wonderful trip and we hope to see you again. Read Less

Rhine & Viking Shores & Fjords (Basel to Bergen) We planned our three week trip exclusively through Viking Cruises using AAA as our agent, and took the afore mentioned vacation May 29 - June 16. Our flights were purchased through Viking Air and we flew United out and IcelandAir home. We booked a pre extension to Lake Como for three days, we stayed at the Lake Como Sheraton hotel. Our Viking host was Lott, he was absolutely fabulous in every possible way and we were treated like family. He took us on an optional tour of the area surrounding the hotel which included his pointing out the local grocery store, coffee shop and several restaurant choices. The regular tours were a great deal of fun and our group of passengers had a lot of fun getting to know one another. The first full day Lott had a welcome party where he served a drink and some snacks, he also walked with us to another town along the water where many of had dinner that evening. The final day we boarded our motor coach for our trip through the alps to Basel, we made several stops including a lunch planned by Viking in Zurich which was wonderful. Lott brought along chocolates and a liquoir for us to share a final drink together and a sweet farewell. I cannot sing his praises enough he was more than a host he was a member of the little family that would enjoy the remaining two weeks together. We boarded the Viking Hiln in Basel and started the next leg of our journey, the ship was all we expected having cruised on a longship two years ago. We were not as thrilled with this itinerary as our time spent on the Rhône previously but could not fault the ship for that. We found the crew on board to be a little cold and almost felt like a bother if you tried to engage anyone with a question or comment. The food was good but not as many choices as we had just two years ago, plenty to eat as always. We sat with our friends from The Lake Como extension in the back of the dining room at several tables. We upgraded our cabin for this trip and had a balcony which we really enjoyed, we had plenty of room for our clothing and the bathroom met our needs. We were supposed to transfer from the Hiln to the Jupiter in Amsterdam and hoped to spend the afternoon touring in the city. A lock was broken so the Hiln put us off in Rotterdam and we were bussed to Amsterdam, the delay did not leave us much time in Amsterdam but we did get a canal ride in before sailaway. This was our first cruise on Viking Ocean and all I can say is WOW, the ship was beautiful and our cabin was lovely. The food and service were very nice and our evening in Manfredis was spectacular. We attended the cruise critic party and met the captain and his wife, who were very social. Viking had one of the nicest events I have attended with drinks and hors d’oeuvres with a very small turnout. The food in the buffet was great and we never struggled to find a table even when we were meeting friends. The ship had many places you could meet and be the only people there, we never felt crowded except at the shows in the evening when if you did not arrive twenty minutes early you very often would stand. We found the shows to be just okay, entertaining, but the the best show starred our energetic and amazing cruise director, Ship Happens production. The free spa area was so enjoyable, the heated pool, the sauna, snow room and steam room were enjoyed by all in our party. Don’t miss it... Our itinerary for this cruise was terrific but our favorite spot was Flam, Norway, we would recommend this trip the fjords were beautiful and different. We disembarked the Jupiter and Viking took us to the airport in Bergen where we boarded an IcelandAir flight to Reykjavik, Iceland for our three night stay at the Grand Hotel. Our host here was a huge disappointment after our wonderful experience with Lott in Lake Como, he left when the tour was over and arrived when it was time to get on the bus. He was very informative and funny but just not as invested. Iceland was interesting and we enjoyed learning about this country, the tours were long days on the bus which was necessary to see everything. The hotel was a huge disappointment, we have stayed with Viking in Paris and Lake Como and were surprised at the difference in service, amenities and cleanliness at this hotel. They were changing the carpets in the hallways and had rolls of carpet old and new in the hallways. The lobby was a mess as the hotel always had bus loads of people arriving or departing with their luggage everywhere. The staff that worked there were not a happy crew and complained out loud about the management or lack there of. I would hope that Viking will not continue to use this hotel because it was not up to par with their usual hotels. We had an amazing vacation and met some wonderful people who we hope to see again, I look forward to cruising both on the river and ocean with Viking again. Read Less

Ensuring that your every need was taken care of. The detail that was done for you made the trip truly a vacation. The food on the ship was always delicious with a wonderful presentation. The scenery along the Rhine was truly beautiful and going through the locks was an interesting experience. Transportation to and from the excursions were always first class. The excursions that were part of the trip were well done to very interesting places that any traveler would want to see. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and fun. The extra excursions that we signed up for were incredible! Our air accommodations were well timed and very convenient for us. We look forward to our next Viking excursion! Read Less

We plan to come again year after year. The destinations were amazing! The food and service is first class, truly 5 star! We will definitely travel the world with Viking, thanks again for everything! I just can’t write enough good words and praise for Captain Tomasz Danelski & his crew. Our trip was made incredibly memorable by Hotel Manager Alexandra Woods, Master Chef Nuno Maia (World renowned), Director Daniela Ebert, Maitre D’ Marci Jasinski, Bartender Extraordinaire Goska Kurowska! Also cannot ever forget The Legendary Dominika Lipska, Caramfil Florin Andrei and of course Rumen the Musician! Ya gotta do this cruise. It's amazing to watch the staff work and benefit from their efforts. Everything is spotless. Everything is on time. Everything we ate were superb. Most of the tours were good and two of the tour guides - Natasha (Black Forest) and Udo (Cologne) were exceptional. The staterooms while small (in comparison to a hotel room) were luxurious and kept spotless. The amount of information provided to us in advance of our cruise was incredible and every time we called for additional information we were treated courteously and given good information. We were fortunate enough to book our flight through Viking and we had some of the best flights we've ever taken in terms of schedule. I have never taken a cruise before and was leary of being holed up with so many people in such a "small" space but didn't end up feeling that way at all. Highly recommended! Read Less

I had heard only good things about Viking. I wanted a travel experience where I was “taken care of” and this was true! We met terrific people and enjoyed all the excursions. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the cruise director was amazing! There was a tremendous variety of food and most of it was great. A few of the meat dishes were a disappointment, perhaps over cooked, especially the veiner schnitzel. People were friendly but it would have helped to have name tags. There was too much difference in ability levels for the tours; we are physically fit and some people could barely walk. The talks on board and the tour guides were very informative. I learned a lot! It would have helped to have more information for our free time. Next time I would take more of the extra excursions. All in all I would ( and have been) highly recommend a Viking River cruise! We had no idea what to expect on a river cruise from the standpoint of comfort, food or services. This cruise was great because of the service, food and people we met! The shore excursions were informative but the best times were sitting at dinner meeting and talking with new friends or on the top deck watching the sites. The night spent in the Rudisheim open air restaurant was beyond fun. The friends we met have already discussed doing it again next year as we will. The boat ride is so smooth you don't know you are moving. The staff couldn't be more accommodating and the food selections were some of the best I've ever eaten. We chose a lower level smaller room because we knew we wouldn't be in it other than to sleep. Since most shore excursions, meals and wine are included we didn't incurr any extra expenses. I would recommend this type of cruise. Read Less

My cruise mate saw this cruise advertised and she asked if I wanted to join her and I said sure, why not! Having seen Viking river cruises advertised on my PBS channel gave me a hint to what was expected knowing it would be wonderful! The anticipation of our journey from booking till the cruise was well worth it when we were thrilled by our Rhine trip. The boat was very spacious for the 188 passengers and the staff made you feel welcome and like family! The excursions were fun and informative. Thicker soled shoes would have been better on all of the cobblestone streets and preparing more for all of the walking is advised. Spending a day on the mid-Rhine would have been enhanced by some history of the castles and towns seen perhaps via our listening devices. You won't find better food anywhere than on a Viking cruise. Many meals were absolutely outstanding warranting seconds. The desserts were incredible! From head chef to wait staff all were excellent and accommodating to your every need. The wine and beer selections with meals added to the fine dining experience. Both menu offerings and buffet selections gave you many options for a great meal! The room accommodations were more than adequate since you spend so little time there. The common areas on the boat gave you space to relax and meet the other passengers. We have a list of other Viking cruises that we want to take including the Danube and a Greece trip. Viking cruises met every expectation for a wonderful time! Read Less

All meals were delicious and there were plenty of choices to accommodate all diets and allergies. The ratio of staff to passengers is amazing and all staff seemed to enjoy the chance to make our trip a special one. The "extra" tours were worth the money. Would recommend that people wear sturdy and comfortable shoes for walking on the cobblestones! Don't underestimate the toll on your feet! It was lots warmer than we thought when packing so think "layers" when you pack! This was our second river cruise with Viking and we will go again! Maybe France next time! Read Less

We chose the Rhine River cruise because we had friends that took it and they said it was Fantastic ! Our Fiftieth Anniversary was coming up and we decided to see for ourselves. What our friends told us did not come close to describing what an absolutely Spectacular experience Viking provides. From the moment we arrived at the ship, to the (unfortunate) moment that we had to leave, everything was perfect. Our cabin was immaculate upon our arrival and was maintained that way for the entire trip. My wife has a very strict special diet and the chef came to our table the first night to discuss it with her & almost every night thereafter to make sure that he was meeting her needs. If you have some special dietary needs? Have no fear ! Viking can & will accommodate! The shore excursions are so well managed & organized that you would have to really work hard to get lost, due to the wonderful tour guides (all English speaking) that are easy to follow & extremely informative. All I can say is "THANK-YOU VIKING" for a Cruise of a life time. We are now in the planning stages for our next Viking River Cruise! Read Less

Viking as a cruise company once again provided a terrific cruise ship and staff. This was our second Viking river cruise and everything about this company and its employees is top shelf. But I didn’t like the itinerary on this cruise as well as our initial cruise, which was southern France. This cruise up the Rhine was just not as interesting and the cities were not as picturesque. You can’t go wrong picking Viking as your river cruise company. But make sure you’ll enjoy the stops on your cruise before you book it. The southern France cruise ended up docked in a new city every morning with easy access right off the boat directly into the new city. The Rhine cruise in contrast often involved cruising during the day and docking in places where a bus trip was necessary to get to the city center. Again the cities visited were just not as interesting and there was too much down time cruising during the day. Read Less

We were not disappointed. We made this trip with five other couples and the ship was more than adequate to meet our needs. The excursions offered us the variation in opportunities we were looking for and the chance to get to know others on the trip was a real treat. The cruise through the castles was amazing. Hard to believe you can cruise so close to so many historic buildings. The stops along the way provided a great mix of both small villages and larger cities. We could not believe the access to quaint villages as well as historic larger cities, and the number for significant cathedrals was outstanding. The trip to the top of Cologne was one of the highlights of our trip. We will definitely return for another cruise. Read Less

I can't say enough good things our Viking cruise. We had a veranda cabin and it was very spacious. The veranda was not really needed in November but it gave us great view of the locks. From the moment you get off the plane, Viking takes care of you. The included tours in each port are more than enough to get to know the ports. We took several optional tours and would highly recommend the beer culture of cologne tour! Also the medival city of Colmar was fascinating and had time for shopping. The dining room staff were all very friendly. There is no assigned seating so you can meet new people at every meal. There were terrific soups every day. That was great after those cold days touring Germany and France. Entertainment was good in the lounge and drink prices are reasonable. This is not really a party ship as you are getting up early to tour. Overall, I highly recommend Viking. Read Less

My friend and I chose this cruise because it was a dream we had always had. When the price dropped so low and included air, we jumped on it. Viking couldn't have been more wonderful to us. The pace was perfect and allowed us to relax as well as participate in excursions. We met lovely people with similar interests and have maintained contact with them. The atmosphere of the ship and services offered made me feel like I was on an expensive luxury cruise rather than being in the cheapest cabin available. After we got on board, I forgot all the hassle we had on the trip over. The Paris airport was a nightmare. We arrived with enough time to transfer to Basel but the red tape and disorganization made us miss our flight. We spent the entire day in the airport and missed seeing Basel. I believe that Viking should take this process into consideration and allow more time to get through Paris. Other than that, I would take another cruise with Viking in a New York minute. Read Less

After sailing on more than a dozen ocean cruises, my wife and I took the plunge on a river cruise. Our only regret is that we did not do so sooner. From the time of initial conversation with a Viking booking representative through completion of our journey in Amsterdam, our Viking experience has been awesome. We traveled to Basel on our own a full day before the Hlin's departure, staying at the Hotel Wettstein (highly recommended because of its location, price, and superior quality). A side note, many fellow Hlin passengers arrived in Basel the day of departure and to a person were suffering from lack of sleep after long trans-Atlantic flights. To do justice to the entire experience on the Hlin, I would need to write pages and pages. Therefore, I will only provide highlights: The ship's staff consistently went out of its way to assist every person on board. Not only were they professional and personable, but made you feel you were the most important person on board. The Hlin is a well maintained modern, clean, and quiet vessel. Public areas never felt crowded, and with floor to ceiling windows, one felt as though you were outside to enjoy the wonderful sights. Our cabin was on the Main deck (deck 1) with only an approximate 24" by 48" window. Because of the bird’s eye view it was the best cabin on the ship. The cabin was better than most upscale ocean cruise ship cabins. Dining was a pleasure, with varied and plentiful food. Our fellow passengers came from all socioeconomic levels; however, the caliber was significantly higher. The stops and sights were awesome. A previous reviewer had written "always have your camera with you", truer words could not have been written. Persons with mobility issues should not be dissuaded from taking a Viking cruise as the staff was observed going to extraordinary lengths to assist and accommodate. Would we go on another Viking river cruise, that process is already in the works. The hard decision is whether we do the Danube or Provence first. Read Less

Fantastic trip. We had seen the ads on Public Broadcasting for years and always talked about doing one. 45th Wedding Anniversary made a great excuse. Viking handled everything smoothly and professionally. The crew went out of their way to make us feel at home. Having the Captain being a former submariner (I'm a retired submarine CO) was special and his eagerness to show me his ship was great. The tours were great. Having a local actually lead the excursions gives you a much more in-depth understanding of the city and people. The tour of Strasbourg was a particular highlight specifically because the guide, a young college student, was so knowledgeable and entertaining. The cabin was very comfortable and the veranda stateroom was perfect for relaxing while watching the river roll by. The meals were excellent and a great way to make new friends. It was one of the best decision we made, as the entire experience was extremely enjoyable! What made it such, was the crew of the Hlin. Candi, was superb in every aspect. She made each transition, every port, every excursion, amazingly smooth and simple! Michael, the hotel manager, made our stay effortlessly. So many amazing members of the crew on the Hlin, I could not name just a single person as they all made our experience wonderful! Not to mention, everyone was also extremely courteous. If you are at all thinking of booking a river boat cruise, Viking is the only way to go! The entire experience was about the countries and the culture. So, by far the best option! Read Less
