This was a 'bucket list' cruise which did not disappoint. We had sailed with Viking in China (5 stars) and this could not compare with that experience. That said, it delivered on all of its promises, with the exception of the hotel accomodation before and after. The experience on the ship was excellent, made better by the seamless planning and execution of the outstanding staff on board. By the end of the week we felt as though we were friends with everybody. Mealtimes were great, with excellent food and attentive service. We gained 5 pounds each! Our room (french balcony) was small but adequate, with a great shower and heated bathroom floor! TV reception was surprisingly good, watching the BBC world news was a treat. We slept well. Coffee and biscuits were always available, and very good! The shore excursions were good, with local guides, some of whom were excellent, none were awful. Highlights were the opportunities to explore on our own - in Mainz the Chagall glass in St Stevens was amazing, and worth the walk to see it. Viking handle the details so well. Luggage was transported efficiently - amazing to see the entire crew (including the Captain!) form a human chain to unload the bags at disembarkation. The only negatives were the choice of hotels before and after. Both were in business districts and somewhat out of the way. Le Meridien in Paris was very disappointing, even though we were upgraded to an Elite room. But it was within walking distance of the Arc de Triomphe and convenient to a Metro station. I can only imagine that this would be a challenging trip for folks with mobility challenges. Lots of walking and stairs would advise careful consideration. Read Less

Five days in advance, we checked with Viking because we heard that water levels were low, and we were told that "Everything is fine." That was totally untrue; the ship had been docked in one place for the previous two weeks! We had to be transported by bus, and spent 13 hours on buses in the final two days alone. Did not see everything that was featured. Viking did not offer alternatives that other lines did. After the cruise, Viking sent a voucher for 25% of the cruise-only fare, but that amounted to only 13% of the total we paid to Viking, including air fares and post-cruise extensions, and the voucher must be used within one year. We have have taken many other cruises and had heard good things about Viking, but Viking waited until we were on site before they were honest about the problems. The ship and crew were all right but Viking "threw" the cruise director "under the bus" and she had to deal with all the unhappy passengers and all the complaints. The post-cruise hotel in Paris was very poorly run, overcrowded and not up to our expectations. On ship, the walking/jogging track is inches above the expensive 3rd-deck cabins; the track was supposed to be closed between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. but that was not enforced and we were awakened at 6 a.m. every morning but one, even though we told the cruise director, reception desk and hotel manager. Shore excursions ranged from excellent to awful. Read Less

We sailed the end of September and early October 2018 (not a choice in date sailed box). Never been to Sweden before. Best part was post cruise, wine tasting stops, "Highlights of the Alps" and Zermatt. Hotel Alex in Zermatt was exceptional I would highly recommend the post tour and Hotel Alex! The weather was clear and the Matterhorn was spectacular! This was our 5th Viking River Cruise segment ( Grand European, France's Finest, Paris to Switzerland) and we got the level of service and food that we have come to expect from our other cruises. We also like the ability to bring wine on board for our room. First Class! Negative Comments: Not a fan of the UN and probably could have had better use of our time. Hotel in Geneva was beautiful inside but I didn't really care for the area (train yard out our window). Seems like in Paris and the othe big cities Viking could locate a hotel closer to the old parts of town or at least something within walking distance of some activities.Always having to take a taxi, bus, subway ot tram. Tired of Paris (2nd time of Pre Cruise package) and if we take another vacation in Europe we probably won't do a Paris stay. We are in our eraly 70's so what we enjoy might be different from other cruises. Read Less

This was our first river cruise but it will definitely not be our last. We were looking for something last minute and because of the free air fare offer, Viking met our needs. We chose this particular cruise because of the itinerary. We wanted to go to Switzerland and we had never been to Paris. Every experience from the initial booking of our reservations to final disembarkation was excellent. There were only 180 passengers onboard, which allowed us to get to know our fellow travelers. The crew went out of their way to make everyone welcome and comfortable. Food was excellent. The views along the Rhine River were incredible. The excursions included in the fare were definitely worthwhile. We also booked some of the additional excursions and felt our money was well spent on all of them. We will definitely choose Viking again for either a river or ocean cruise. Their attention to detail and their outstanding quality make Viking our first choice. Read Less

Although we were onboard the Viking Hild for seven nights, also included were two nights in Zurich, Switzerland and two nights in Paris, France. Those hotel accommodations were excellent! Our hotel in Paris was right at the Eiffel Tower! We visited 4 different countries on the trip (Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, and France.) Free excursions were provided daily where we got to visit the nearby cities with transportation provided by Viking. We received and experienced the real culture and beauty and history of these beautiful places. There were only 189 passengers, so everyone received personal care and attention. The foods were prepared according to the country we visited .... all were DELICIOUS! The staterooms were pristine, and the beauty of the world we visited were breathtaking. Our Cruise Director, Emma, and all the Viking Staff (airport, hotels, cruise tour guides, and ship) far exceeded our expectations. GREAT GREAT JOB, VIKING! THANK YOU!!!!!! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the start and end locations as well as the route along the way. Although we have taken several ocean cruises, this was our first time on a river cruise. The most impressive aspect of the cruise experience was the thoroughness of the planning. From our receipt of the travel documents prior to departure to our return flight to Houston, we were impressed with how flawlessly the entire trip was planned and executed. Once on board the Viking Hild, we enjoyed the excellent service and accommodations. The dining experience was consistently outstanding. Also worth noting were the shore excursions offered at every port of call. The inlcuded morning walking tours were all lead by knowledgeable local guides, and most of the optional tours were excellent. The most memorable of the optional tours was the "Highlights of the Alps." We greatly enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to our next Viking River Cruise! Read Less

We started in Zurich and ended in Paris as we traveled on the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. All the stops in Germany were great but I especially loved our time in Paris. Would recommend 1 less stop in Germany and 1 more day in Paris. Loved the size of our boat which gave us a change to meet the other passengers. A river cruise gives you a closer look of the shoreline and gives you calmer waters to travel on. The cruise director was very good in giving us an explanation of each days excursions. The crew was extremely friendly and helpful. Loved our cabin. It was so modern and clean and always had toiletries replenished. The TV always gave tips on sailing. Having wifi on the boat was a plus for us and it was free. I would absolutely recommended this cruise to future travelers. Love this amazing cruise. Read Less

The service was outstanding, from the housekeeping staff to the dining room staff. It was like being on a moving Ritz Carlton. We loved that we didn't have to deal with kids running around. All the guests were friendly and gracious. The food was outstanding. I was surprised I didn't gain more pounds. The drinks were great. I loved the Silver package that gave us access to our selection of wines and spirits any time of the day. The tours at each stop were excellent and educational. Having locals tell us about the local history and customs was unexpected. It gave us an appreciation of the culture that is hard to get when traveling on your own. We enjoyed this so much we decided that the 7 days on the river was too short so after being home 10 days, we signed up for a 15 day cruise next year. Read Less

Wanted to see the Alps and Paris and points between. This was a wonderful way to do it. We took the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur and twent by bus to Zurich. Zermatt is a perfect Swiss village with views of the Matterhorn. The included trip to the Gornergrat Glacier gave a lot of insight into the effects of climate change on the glaciers. Based on past experience with Viking we knew ithis trip would be first class Hotel choices in Geneva and Zurich were 4 star but the location was not convenient. Everything else was perfect. We took included tours and some optional ones (recommend optional Taste of Alsace to all foodies).and in some cities just wandered on our own. Ship was ljust the right size. Cabins have plenty of storage and we were only in it to sleep. When we weren’t on shore we sat on the sun deck and relaxed. Food choices were good with lots to pick from. We’re 66 and 65 yrs old and a Viking River Cruise has been on our list of things to do for some time. We made reservations with Viking River Cruises for the Swiss Apls to Paris cruise aboard the Viking Hild. We have made server ocean cruises and a small ship cruise of Alaska but this was our first river cruise. We elected to use our accumulated air miles for upgrades for air travel so Viking did not plan our flights. They did arrange transport to the airport for our departure. Due to the flight duration we decided add to our travel plans and arrived several days early to tour Switzerland before meeting up with Viking in Zurich. Without any doubt this cruise was by far our best adventure. Maybe ‘adventure’ is the wrong word to use because everything was perfectly scripted by Viking. The ship was extremely comfortable with lots of natural light and the Scandinavian decor was refreshing. The crew was exceptional. They quickly learned your name and seem to anticipate your request. Meals and wine selection were excellent, either buffet or cooked to order. We had dinner most evenings on the Aquavit terrace (bow) which allowed us to enjoy the weather and stunning views. We selected the beverage package which included a broad selection of premium wines and liquors. I could go on and on but suffice to say we thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and are in the process of selecting a longer cruise for 2019. Read Less

My husband and I were looking for a special way to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary so we decided to take our first Viking River Cruise. We were NOT disappointed and have been bitten by the Viking travel bug! We chose to add 2 extra days in Basel before the cruise started. After an orientation walk by a very informative and personable guide we had plenty of time to discover Basel on our own. Once we boarded The Hild, the onboard staff was all so helpful and friendly. Our stateroom was perfect for the two of us! Our balcony gave us the option to watch the river go by in our pajamas if we chose. We enjoyed the relaxed dining room attire and the food was marvelous! In addition to the included excursions we took at least one extra excursion in each port. Our favorite was probably the Alsatian Wine and Tasting excursion which was as much about strolling through Alsace as it was about tasting wine. We had the pleasure of visiting the Albert Seltz vineyard where we had a direct audience with the vintner himself who was very knowledgeable and friendly. We wish we had added 2 days in Amsterdam to the end of our cruise but that might have to wait for our next trip. We loved that The Hild was small and cozy and not a overwhelming, crazy, floating megalopolis as some cruise ships have felt to us. We would HIGHLY recommend this cruise and Viking! Read Less

The ship was brand new and really lovely. Rooms were comfortable and very well appointed, with very comfortable beds and heated bathroom floors!! The lounges are very nice and the service is beyond belief. All meals are excellant and servers are extremely attentive. I would rate Viking as one of the very best in the business...including service, coordination, cuisine, flight arrangements, transfers...you name it, and it was exceedingly well done. We traveled with friends and made new friends along the way. If you want to see more castles along the river, we commend the Danube. The Rhine is much wider, and more commercially travelled. Service was excellent, but for the most part the meals were uninspired and when questioned as to variety or quality we received little response. Disappointed in entertainment on the ship, not as good or interesting as on previous cruises. Not much emphasis on artisans from local areas. Tours were very fast with little time to enjoy local culture. Very fast paced with guides who wanted to make certain you saw highlights of every local monument with little time to enjoy the moment! Always felt we were being rushed with little tome to enjoy the moment. Since we were traveling through some world's greatest vineyards, it would have been good to have local growers on board to explain the process of growing their vineyards. Because I sell wine, I was interested in seeing some of Alsace and the Mosel valley. We travelled with Viking twice before and were delighted with the cruises, so we chose Viking again, and we were not disappointed. Our two previous cruises were not on the Longships, and we were very very impressed with this newer model. It is spectacular really, with the lovely option of breakfast and lunch on the Aquavit terrace. When it was cold, the doors in the Terrace were closed, but we could still enjoy the passing scenery. On a few gorgeous days, we were able to eat outside, and it was amazing. On the top of the ship is a walking track, which we used on days when we were not on shore a lot. The view from there was excellent. The stateroom we had was a decent size with a nice balcony we used often. The Restaurant was roomy and pleasant. The food on board was delicious for all the meals, and the included wines, though they only alternated from day to day, were 8 choices overall and quite good. The service was marvelous, and though a few of our dinner mates complained, I could find nothing lacking. I thought that the staff worked exceptionally hard and were unfailingly pleasant. The tours on each day varied. We had mainly very interesting tour leaders who maintained our interests, but on a few occasions the tour did not live up to what we had experienced on our other cruises. The optional tours we took were quite good, though, especially the tour of the Alsace wine country with Juliette. She gave us a fascinating tour. The hotels on either end of the tour were good. The Renaissance in Zurich was very nice, and it was a simple, short ride on the tram to central Zurich. We bought our tickets at the hotel and really enjoyed riding the tram with the Swiss. The Pullman in Paris was good, and in a perfect location next to the Tour Eiffel! The metro was super close too, and we hopped on each day to tour. Really, we loved the cruise/tour and the Longship and can't wait to book another cruise. Read Less

My "rub" was with the hotels before and after the cruise. in zurich, the renaissance was located away from the city center and we were forced to wait in the lobby for three hours after we arrived before we could enter our room. so, a 12 hour flight experience to get to zurich and a 3 hour wait in a hotel lobby. come on viking!!! Our hotel in paris, the pullman, was past its prime. yes it is next to the eiffel tower, but the room was more 2 star than anything else. We went with another couple who had been on a river cruise before. This was our first river cruise although many ocean cruises. The staff from the captain to the room stewards were helpful, friendly and went out of their way to make you happy. My wife was not thrilled with the food at dinner (the taste of the spices used for cooking and sauces). I thought the food was very good. Entertainment is very simple. Local music in some ports and a full time piano player who was excellent. Breakfasts and lunch were very good with plenty of options. Local guides were used at each port and were knowledgeable and articulate. Excursions usually lasted a couple of hours. A lot of cobblestone streets. Some ports required considerable walking, sometimes on rock paths along the levee with stairs to get to street level. Overall the cruise was very enjoyable. I was expecting a little more time on the river, but not disappointed. The ship is very clean and easy to navigate. The cabins are a little small, but they were what I expected. We left the USA early to spent a week in Switzerland. Because of that we had to pay $100 each for "air deviation". When we tried to find out how to get from the airport in Zurich to the hotel (our invoice stated transfers included) we were advised that because of air deviation, transfers were not included and they forgot to tell us. To add a fitting ending to the trip, their contracted shuttle driver dropped us off at the wrong airline gate( on the opposite side of the parking lot. Read Less

We chose this Viking River Cruise (VRC) because of the destinations, Switzerland to Paris. Our group was large (14 family members) and we were celebrating my mother's 85th birthday. The entire staff of the Viking Hild catered to us superbly and in a very professional manner. We really appreciate and commend the service of the Maitre De (Teresa) and her entire dining staff, and our Program Director (Susi). The only real negative about this cruise was the pre and post hotel accomodations. We were booked in Zurich at the Renaissance Tower Hotel. The hotel was nice enough but the location in the industrial section of Zurich made sightseeing on our own difficult. VRC could have picked a hotel in a central location near the shopping and dining areas of Zurich. In Paris, we were booked at the Pullman Eiffel Tower. The location was excellent, but the hotel itself was not 4 star quality. Our room was located on the first floor, but it felt like being in the basement/garage. The hallways were dark and claustrophobic. Our room was average and it showed a lot of wear and tear. The in room safe did not work and there was no ice bucket. We contacted the front desk to remedy the situation but it was not resolved. Since we were only there for two nights we just let it be. VRC should also review the Lorelei shore excursion. This excursion was a waste of time. It appeared this excursion was just to take the cruisers to the gift shop. There were other locations on the Rhein and Moselle Rivers which were more interesting and worthwhile. Overall, my family enjoyed our first river cruise and hopefully do another one in the future with VRC. Read Less

I chose Viking due to the fact that myself and my family have previously taken a Viking River cruise down the Danube about five years ago and had a spectacular experience. This time we tried the Switzerland to Paris river cruise which took us down the Rhiene and Mosel rivers. What can I say, the Hild, a brand new ship, 2017, was fantastic in all its appointments. The staff was very accommodating in every way, the food was off the hook great, the entertainment was very good and the excursions and guides were top notch. The Captain, Johan was very professional an yet personable along with the Hotel Director, David and the Director of the restaurant, Theresa couldn't be better. The Chef was absolutely top notch, always delighting us with his creations, so great thanks to him. However, the star and hero in a few cases due to unforeseen bumps in the road was Suzie. She was very professional through a couple of rough spots which included a medical emergency and very knowledgeable of where we were, what we would experience and tended to all of the ships guests needs. She certainly is an asset to Viking and deserves a mountain of recognition. Suzie, you made it great for all of us! This cruise would have gotten a solid 5 from me if it wasn't for the Hotel area we were put up for 2 days in Switzerland. The Hotel that Viking chose was in a Techno area of the city, very bland and out of away from the "old" town which I was expecting to stay in. This would have been a much better experience, It kind of painted a less than palatable start for the trip. The Hotel, even though a large one, didn't seem to be ready to accept the number of guests that were arriving. We had to wait for our rooms a very long time. Even then, Suzie stepped in and made things a bit better. Thanks to all, A great trip, would go again if they tweaked the Swiss Hotel issue. Read Less

We have always wanted to take a Viking cruise and were able to do so with our relatives from San Diego. From the moment we arrived in Zurich we were in the efficient hands of Viking employees. Everything was handled with great care. I attribute that to our program director, Mathias Von Dort. He was like a camp counselor informing, directing, and accompanying us (the campers) through every part of our trip. The room, while not spacious, was perfect. The meals were wonderful. The tours were all we had hoped for, especially our optional excursion to the Swiss Alps. Our tours where wonderful and expertly handled by local tour guides who had detailed information and amusing anecdotes for each setting. For those concerned about the amount of walking, there was always a "gentle" group that took speed and difficulty of the walking tours into consideration. Our program director ,Mathias, made sure that we were entertained in the evening with great dance and music games that allowed you to meet and interact with many of the other guests on the ship. Above all, the crew was amazing! Whether the room stewards, the wait staff, the bartenders or the officers, everyone was cordial and friendly beyond belief. They also transitioned seamlessly between tasks on the ship which was evidenced by their ability to move our luggage when departing like a well-oiled machine. Everyone from the Captain to the kitchen help worked shoulder to shoulder. As we sadly left for the airport, we were still in the capable hands of Viking employees. Once at the airport, we were escorted to our specific airline counters by yet another employee. We simply could not have asked for a more well managed vacation. Oh, by the way, we have already booked our next Viking cruise for September of 2018! Read Less
