This trip from Basel to Amsterdam over 13 days was so good. Last year we went on the Danube from Budapest to Prague but this has much more scenic vistas. My number one tip is to book your trip through Costco. We got a shipboard credit of $300 and a cash card for $1300. On the ship the crew was amazing and so hard working. The guests were very friendly to each other and we got to know some wonderful new friends. We had great weather. The included tours were very comprehensive and there were just 3 extra cost tours. My minor complaints were that the dinner menu was not to my liking. Some items that I would never eat. I am not a big drinker but all drinks are all included in this tour. Also, the layout of the dining room for the breakfast buffet was cramped. I would highly recommend Uniworld. Read Less

We contracted this cruise with others through a common travel agent and received great value. The rooms on the 3rd level are quite small, requiring my wife and I to signal each other as to where we were headed in the room in order to make space for us to pass. There is sufficient closet space, few drawers, a good safe, and interestingly the wall covers have a foam base which eliminates all noise other than that in the room. The daily trips related to the Jewish Excursions throughout the week and the guides, with one exception, were among the best we have experienced. Everything was easy here, prompted by a rather modest size passenger list. The food was from good to very good, with outstanding restaurant service, especially the maître d' who provided my wife at every meal with a serrated knife since she has problems with her hand. He would come up behind us, wherever we sat, and unobtrusively replace the cutlery. And he had the cook prepare a side dish for a passenger we sat with based on her request. MOST IMPRESSIVE. There is less to do in the afternoons after the tours and other than a piano player, nothing in the evening...with one exception. While the cruise director did good work describing the castles on the Rhine, more information would have been very helpful and more entertainment in the evening would have enhanced the trip. Our room was kept spotless, and the ship itself was exceedingly clean. It was a comfortable cruise with a very attentive staff. I wish that it had some added features in order for me to recommend this excursion to others. Read Less

The cabins were beautiful with a lot of amenities. I loved the heated towels and fresh flowers among many other delightful amenities. Breakfast and lunch were buffets .They were both really good especially the lunch. The lunches were the best I ever had on all of my 26 cruises of many cruise lines.I have to say dinner is just okay, but the desserts were wonderful!! our tours were very good some days we were able to do more than one tour..when Uniworld says all inclusive they are not kidding...free WiFi fee alcohol as much as you want whenever you want it.specialty coffee included cookies and candies out 24 7 Transfers well organized. The entertainment at night is rather boring and the gym is terrible. I never saw a gym so small.. I did like that they offered free washer and dryer services.they even provided laundry detergent. The movie theater was nice to offering 3 differnt movies everyday. it was really a great cruise. They just need some better entertainment and a better gym. Our prior uniworld cruise was so good we went again. The room on this ship was bigger with more up to date features. The only issue many of us had was the speed of the internet which was too slow for FaceTime and other internet activities. The food was excellent quality and diversity of options. All the staff throughout the ship could t do more for you. They were attentive and very visible and enjoy what they do. One excursion to the Vinegar tasting of gourmet aperitif vinegars was the best of all! It was very unique. And the visit to a working very old wine making castle was also fantastic. The tour director, Preston was fantastic, always visible and involved and helpful. We booked our air travel and pre and post hotel stays and they handled everything completely...we didn't have to worry about any transports, tips or arrangements. Our tour guide in Amsterdam, Muriel, was fantastic as well as the tour guides in Lucerne, Shannon. UNIWORLD cruises are fantastic! Read Less

Items that needed improvement: 1. The on-board musicians (husband and wife) were not of high quality. Most passengers did not enjoy. On 2 separate nites, local musicians performed and they were excellent. 2. While on ship, more activities should have been organized such as trivia contests, in depth history mini lectures, etc. 3. Scrambled eggs at breakfast were barely warm 4. The Airport Hotel in Basel was the site of Uniworld bus pickup on Sat., July 1. When hotel front desk staff was asked to confirm that Uniworld buses were coming, they had no knowledge of this. We were very worried and concerned that we were at the wrong hotel. The communication between Uniworld and the hotel was unacceptable. Also, the hotel failed to send their free shuttle to pick us up at airport. We had to over pay, $28, for a very short taxi ride. 5. WiFi on the ship, Antoinette, was mostly poor in rooms and mediocre in common areas. Items that were great: food, service, butlers, wait staff, excursions Read Less

The SS Antoinette was a beautiful ship and the personal service was so impressive. We stayed on the upper deck with a balcony that had an automatic window that we loved to open and watch the river go by at night. The staff on board quickly learned our names and our favorite cocktails each day. We arrived thinking that the two of us just wanted to spend our 25th anniversary alone because we have three children and lead hectic lives, but you quickly meet new friends and enjoy their company! I will say we definitely were on the younger side of this cruise (I'm 49 and my husband is 50) but we met some great people. I did feel that I missed information on the next day's excursions, maybe because I am a cruise newbie. The more seasoned cruisers on the ship would coach me along on how things work on ships. The staff was so wonderful but they do seem overworked, amazing how each of them all help with every part of the ships daily runnings. We loved the Leopard Bar and had a great guitar player at night who would play any request and we would all sing along, so fun and the bartenders were awesome too! Our room was very nice and comfortable as well as the bathroom, small but nice. The excursions were always informative and we always had a great time (my favorite was Heidelberg and the Castle Vollard, didn't really enjoy the vinegar tasting) . The week went by so quickly!! This was our 3rd Uniworld river cruise and our 6th river cruise overall. We have enjoyed every river cruise we have ever taken, but have stayed with Uniworld after our travel agent recommended that we switch to them. Uniworld's service is wonderful. The excellent service starts the moment you get within eyesight of the embarkation area. The crew take your luggage and usher you onboard to a very short and easy embarkation process. If you board as we did late morning, you are invited to lunch and can then go ashore until sailing. In this case, sailing was after dinner and we went out for the afternoon in Basel. When we returned our luggage was in our cabin. The staff takes works hard to respond to all requests. Our cruise director, Ramona, was excellent and seemed to be constantly available. When I had trouble with my return flight, Ramona helped me get the information that I needed. It was unusually cold during our cruise. During the afternoon when we passed the most famous Rhine castles there was a strong, cold wind. The staff frequently brought hot drinks and checked to see if you wanted any additional blankets. I really like the all-inclusive format and not having to have cash to tip local guides and drivers. The same driver handled all of our excursions and was very safe and careful. The food was very good. My husband said that the veal we had the last evening was the best veal he had ever had in his life. My favorite that meal was the creme brulee fois gras. I enjoyed a guided afternoon bicycle ride in Strasbourg. The bicycles were easy to use and in great shape. The staff made sure that the bicycle was properly adjusted for me before we departed. There was a large basket and we were given a bottle of water before we departed. Read Less

River cruising's dirty little secret- sometimes you don't get to cruise. We knew the day before we left home the ship would not be meeting us in Basal. Met by a bus at the dock and transfer was very seamless. Taken to Kehl Germany, even further up the River than originally planned and sat there for four days (with a Viking Ship lashed to us for 3 days - that means people on that side of the boat had NO VIEW). Bus rides to excursions got longer and longer as we were further and further away from the planned excursions. Wednesday night we were told we were getting off the boat and would be in a Hotel in Weisbadden for two nights. Friday lunch we were told we would be getting back on the boat in Mainz for the next day and a half. A few excursions had to be cancelled or shortened due to extra time spent in buses. The staff, especially the cruise director Tomas and his assistant, turned themselves inside out to make it work. (Other things at play- a train strike and even a landslide!) When we could not get back to the boat for lunch we were given money to buy our own meal. The bus drivers became our heroes (3 point turns on mountain roads) for their inventive routes around all the traffic jams and we got to see parts of the country we would not have and even local curiosities like the self cleaning toilet seat at a road side rest area. Uniworld went so far as to charter another boat to take us on an hours long cruise through the Castle/vineyard area on the Rhine River. Because we went south to get back on the boat, we got a magical night time tour through the Castles and River towns when they were all lit up. Before we disembarked we had a compensating discount on a future cruise in our hands. We felt this was not adequate for all the upheaval we experienced. The trip became pretty grueling after spending so much time on the buses and the packing and unpacking was not what we paid top dollar for. Leaving the hotel in Weisbadden was done under a lot of pressure. Through our travel agent, we contacted Uniworld and they have come back with a much more adequate compensation package. I feel they have made good by us. Take away - pick your season for the Cruise carefully and pick your River as carefully. Our travel agent addressed this issue and was told the the Rhine is very reliable. While well controlled by the countries on the River, the Rhine floods ALL the time - the barriers all along the route speak to its history. Read Less

For starters, Uniworld neglected to inform us that there would be a pickup at our hotel due to high water at the embarkation point. The physical condition of the ship is very nice. Clean, modern, decor a bit overdone but still very nice. Unfortunately, a day or so into the cruise passengers began coming down with a respiratory ailment that spread very quickly with the result that when walking down the hall all you could hear were people coughing. There was never any recognition of this condition by the ship's management nor any accommodation made for those too ill to come down to the dining room. While service in the dining room and lounges was good, the food quality did not meet expectations. If Uniworld aspires to be the "Seabourn" of river cruising it needs to step up its game. Read Less
