Fist of all, I can't say enough about Uniworld the company. What a class act! And the company focus of customer service permeates all through the staff. As an example: The Rhine River was at flood stage during our cruise, making it impossible to navigate some of the lochs. All of the river cruise ships had to dock in one area and wait for the river level to drop before continuing. While the rest of the cruise ship passengers sat around in the same place for two days, Uniworld made special arrangements for buses to take us to the towns and tours we otherwise would have missed (at no additional cost). Once the river dropped, every ship moved on, but we were the only ones that never missed a stop! AND, Uniworld later gave us a sizeable discount on a future cruise just for the inconvenience. The River Queen is an absolutely beautiful ship, Every detail is lovely. The ship is immaculate and extremely warm and inviting. Our cabin was perfectly appointed and extremely comfortable. It was a luxurious oasis to retire to every evening. The staff was absolutely outstanding. Polite, helpful, extremely competent and friendly. It felt like we were among friends the entire trip. The food was varied, plentiful and delicious. The itinerary was perfect. Not only did we travel the Rhine from Basil Switzerland to Amsterdam, but we went up the Mosel River to Luxembourg. This was the most beautiful part of the trip, and shouldn't be missed! This was an outstanding itinerary on a beautiful boat with a fantastic crew supported by a quality company. I cannot say enough about how impressed we were with Uniworld... So much so we are booked on two more cruises in 2017! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the origination and destination and the fact that we had sailed the previous year with Uniworld. The entire staff of the first cruise and this cruise were absolutely outstanding. It was very clear that their primary goal was to ensure that their guests were well taken care of commencing from the time of purchase of the cruise and even after the cruise ended. The meals were always expertly prepared and the service at mealtime was individualized. Excellent wine, beer and drink selections. The tours were well thought out and the guides were excellent, much information shared. Both the ship's captain and the tour director managed to provide continued services and tours even when the ship was docked due to an unnavigable (Rhine) river due to heavy rains and river height and flow. The wait staff in the dining room always engaged the guests and were attentive to details, remembering individual likes and dislikes. Read Less

The cruise was recommended by a friend. I had been considering river cruises for several years and the time was right. The boats are beautiful, the staff friendly and attentive, the excursions, wonderful and the the food incredible. I loved the variety of the excursions, from quaint villages to larger cities with old world charm. The boats are smaller and more intimate. We got to know most everyone on the boat and it was a relaxed and fun cruise. They had a wonderful piano player who kept us entertained, and also brought local entertainers onto the boat for several evenings. The guides for the shore excursions were very knowledgeable and entertaining. Everyone spoke English, as well as at least 1 or 2 other languages so extremely easy to communicate. The cabins were beautiful and very comfortable. The weather was chilly so we didn't much time on deck but on a sunny day cruising through the castles would be beautiful It will be hard to top this cruise, but I'm already looking for my next adventure. Castles along the Rhine seemed to be very romantic -- and it was. The cruise was beautiful, the crew were excellent, and the food was very good. The crew treated us as if we were the only ones on the ship. They made sure we were happy and felt like we were special. The on-shore excursions were fantastic. The tour guides were very knowledgable, and did not hesitate to answer every question. The food was very good. Even though meals were prepared for approximately 90+ people, it tasted as though it was made just for us. Embarkation and disembarkation were handled very smoothly. Our luggage was taken care of for us. We were met at the airport in Basal by a gentleman who came in on his off time to pick us up. Our plane was several hours late, but we were still met and taken straight to the hotel. At the hotel, a Uniworld employee stayed over to greet us and explain the activities of the next several days. We also spent a day in Lucerne offered by Uniworld as well, which was amazing. Uniworld does an excellent job!! I would recommend Uniworld and this cruise to anyone. The next time we take a river cruise, we will use Uniworld. Read Less

I had never taken a river cruise before and an opportunity came for me to do so. I had never been to Switzerland before and flew in 2 days early to enjoy it. I was very surprised that the embarkation port was so far removed from the downtown area. Embarkation was smooth and everyone was helpful, just too far away from everything. Most people are too tired to care upon embarkation, but if you wanted to get into town, it would have been difficult. The ship and crew were impeccable! I am not use to such a small vessel as I come from Ocean cruising - but what an amazing experience. The cabins on this ship ran small to me but it was fine overall. The beds were very comfortable. While the bathroom was tiny, the shower was a surprise. It was bigger, maybe just laid out differently, than most ocean ship showers! The dining room and servers was great! Dining is totally different than on cruise ships (sorry I keep comparing them, but its all I have to compare to so far). Breakfast and lunch is buffet - hot and cold with serving stations, so plentiful. Dinner is served from a different menu every night, although they do have a few choice items that are available every night (steak, chicken, pasta). Not a ton of entertainment, but you are out most of the time and don't really miss it. When you are onboard, you spend it mostly in the lounge meeting your co-travelers. It was mostly off season for my cruise and the weather was spotty but the crew made up for it as much as possible. They were always available to answer questions. Service everywhere was exceptional. The ports were fantastic but we were not in most of them long enough for me and one, too long. I'm sure the season, being rainy and a Sunday, did not help. The shore excursions were fun and different. Very well organized. I would love to go again when the weather was better. Did not get to enjoy the deck as I would have liked! Cruising the Castles day - the weather was clear but exceptionally cold. They passed out heavy blankets and the bar staff brought hot chocolate, tea, hot toddies - whatever you desired. I enjoyed the variety of travelers on board. The Captain and staff were patient - I asked a LOT of questions - I was fascinated by the locks! It was great fun for me, but if you need constant stimulation, something happening all the time, you would be unhappy. While there is lots to see and enjoy, you really must slow down to do it. Which is exactly why I loved it. Read Less

The food was good, never great. The cabin was cramped even for one person due to a huge king sized bed. Mirrors might make it look larger, but they don't make it be larger. Entertainment was Charlie on the piano every night playing Boomer songs. I'm a boomer, but it would have been cheaper going to Las Vegas. The sole stab at culture was one time with a forty year old with pony tail who never got the word that the lecture method is a snoozer. He read from his cards, no doubt ones he developed for his class. The worst part was the scheduling. We were given two hours in Cologne with the only choice to go to the cathedral and back. Compare that to the scheduled overnights in towns that had the charm of shopping in strip malls. However, some of us discovered that the chocolate museum was just next to where the ship was berthed in Cologne. This was discovered on our own, despite the insufficient internet connection. So we did hit the chocolate museum, but only if we ditched the included walking tour of the cathedral. Don't be fooled that the ship provides walking tours designed for "Gentle Walkers." Strange how those of us who suffered from injuries and arthritis were put into groups with guides who beat out the other groups. We actually walked faster and got less depth of information. And don't blame the cruise director. She did not set up the schedule which was designed around extra cost shore excursions, berthing fees and port taxes (we were always furthest from anything in comparison to other cruises). This is a company decision. And the actual castles on the Rhine? They are still nice, but there are ferries which go up and down the prettiest area They let you get out, have lunch, grab a capucinno. We sailed right through with commentary, but no illustrated maps. They are on the net, but then again, there was that insufficient internet connection. Read Less

This was our first cruise of any kind, as well as being our first trip to Europe and everything, absolutely everything, was amazing! We are now Uniworld travellers for life! I have been singing their praises since we got home. We took the Castles Along the Rhine tour departing on 3/27 from Basel on the S.S. Antoinette. Embarkation: We arrived in Basel after an overnight flight and connection from Amsterdam and were greeted by the Uniworld rep outside the baggage area. We transferred to the ship without issue and were quickly and efficiently checked in. The Itinerary: Stops were well organized and buses to and from locations were on time and very nice. All operators from the guides to the bus drivers on the excursions were superb. Favorite stops included Speyer, my husband loved the Technical Museum there! Also, Koblenz is a place I would have loved to spend more time, and the tram ride up to the fortress was great! Cruise manager, Chad, was great and very knowledgeable. The day we had the 'scenic' cruising the weather was horrible. Everyone was on deck huddled under blankets and it was freezing rain, however the waiters brought everyone hot chocolate (or something stronger), which was a nice touch! The only negative thing I have to say about the excursions is I wish there was more time included for shopping! That is a personal preference because my husband and I love to shop and a couple of times we ducked out of the guided tours early so we could shop more. Dining: Waiters were fantastic! Alex was our waiter and he was wonderful, very attentive! Food was excellent! I was very impressed with the dinners and the quality was so good. I gained 5 pounds! The breakfast buffet was very good with an omelet station and the 'usual' breakfast items (bacon, sausage, eggs, croissants etc). Lunch buffet was good as well. Entertainment & Lounge/Bar: There was a duo (I think they were father/daughter) almost every night who were very talented. The cruise was not full and most nights they were singing to an almost empty lounge but they kept up the pace and were very enjoyable. The lounge at night was a the perfect area for us to sit and relax after dinner. I loved how much room there was in general on the ship as well. You were never 'fighting' for a spot anywhere nor were you so packed in that you were forced to interact with people if you didn't want to. This was our honeymoon and we wanted to be alone. The bar tender, a different man named Alex, was our favorite staff member! He was amazing and we loved chatting with him. He always remembered our drink orders and was so friendly! One note about the drinks (at the bar and during meals), I assumed that since it was all inclusive that refills would be scarce to try to pinch pennies on their part, but boy was I wrong! If they saw you were even half empty they refilled your glass. It's the little things like those details that really impressed me. Crew: Peter, the concierge, was amazing! He needs to be recognized for his service! He went above and beyond on several occasions for us when we made requests to do things not on the itinerary (once when we asked about going to the technical museum and the other when my husband wanted to see the ruins of a bridge we were passing after dark). I was so impressed with him, great experience! But all the staff were amazing. Even the housekeeping staff were super friendly and nice (not something you see often if you know what I mean!). Every single staff member seemed to truly love their jobs and couldn't do enough for you. If you asked for something they literally jumped at the chance to make you happy! Such an amazing feeling! We felt like royalty! Everyone seemed very well trained and it all seemed to operate like a well oiled machine! This was our first Uniworld cruise, but will not be our last! We hope to sail with them again this December on a holiday cruise. Can't wait! Travel with them and you won't be sorry! I don't think I could go with Viking now that I have experienced Uniworld. I would literally do a commercial for them I loved it that much! It was truly, 100% all inclusive (drinks, gratuities---everything). It was beyond relaxing to not have to pull out your checkbook left and right while we were there or worry about the tab we were ringing up. Everything was taken care of and we were able to fully relax---it was an amazing feeling! The perfect honeymoon experience! Read Less

Well organized cruise with pre-extension in Basel and post-extension in Amsterdam. Uniworld personnel were attentive, well organized, and all aspects of the cruise with airport transfers were without a hitch. The no extra tipping policy was well appreciated. Drinks on board were all covered with plentiful servings and refills. The cabin was well kept up. The S.S. Antoinette was in good condition although the decorations seemed dated compared to newer ships. The quality of the food and choices were excellent. Service in the dining area was very attentive. All guides on excursions were quite knowledgeable and tours were well organized. My disappointment with the cruise was that the majority of ports were located in industrial areas and not very scenic. Most excursions required a 1/2 hour bus ride to see historic towns and buildings. This was the nature of the geography of the Rhine and not the fault of the cruise company. The viewing of castles was mostly limited to one afternoon cruising about a 30 mile section of the Rhine in Germany. Basel was a good choice for a pre-extension city to visit and was easily walkable. Amsterdam was flat and easily walkable as well and made for an enjoyable post cruise extension. If you have never been on a river cruise or will only be doing one cruise, choose the Danube river cruise as they are much more scenic and historic towns are much more accessible. Read Less

We cruised the Rhine River on the Antoinette with 6 other couples and had a wonderful time. We opted for suites and ours was large, clean, beautifully decorated with plenty of storage. Have you ever before heard of a cruise with bathroom having two sinks? Butler service is also included and ours saw to our every need. The meals onboard were varied and outstanding. Being all-inclusive drinks were also readily available including higher tier brands. The staff was amazing. All went out of their way to be gracious and friendly. I was amazed when I approached the front desk our first full day out and they knew my room number before I told them. With a maximum of about 150 guests it's a very warm and friendly atmosphere too. Most shore excursions were included as well and each was top-notch. The guides spoke excellent English and were walking encyclopedias about their area, yet fascinating speakers. Entertainment onboard was great too. Both the regular duo and the special guest duo were very talented and won deserved ovations. There really is nothing I can fault on this cruise and I'd choose Uniworld again in a heartbeat. Read Less

My husband and I are avid ocean cruisers but we wanted to try something different and booked the Royal Suite on the S.S. Antoinette. The ship was gorgeous and the staff were all outstanding in their efforts to please all onboard. The problem that I had with the cruise was the fact that the little things like a real bar of soap in the bathroom and hair conditioner were not stocked or offered. As well, one night we received one tin of mints on a pillow, not two. It's the small details that appear "cost cutting" when a person is spending A LOT of money to be on the ship that really turned us off. The meals were very good but not what I was expecting. We were hoping to get some foie gras or maybe escargot but we were offered beef and, one night, lamb. Again, for the price we paid, the food did not meet our expectations. I expected to see local entertainers come aboard but the only evening entertainment was a female and male singing duo who played a lot of 70's tunes. Again, not bad entertainment but I wasn't expecting the same thing every evening. I really wanted to like this cruise but left the ship feeling a bit like I had been "fleeced" out of a lot of money. I could have taken a less expensive cruise with a competitor and had the same experience. Read Less

We sailed the August 26, 2015 Uniworld River Empress 7 night Castles on the Rhine cruise from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, Netherlands. Uniworld picked us up at the Basel airport. We did the two night pre-cruise stay sponsored by Uniworld in Basel at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois which I wholeheartedly recommend, a true luxury hotel directly on the Rhine, spectacular stay. Uniworld picked us up at the hotel and transferred us to the River Empress and our luxury cruise adventure began. Full disclosure, this was our first river cruise. The reputation of Uniworld as arguably the best river cruise line precedes itself which is why we chose it - top food, top service, top educational enrichment programs. We are passionate devotees of Celebrity Cruises when it comes to ocean cruising. From the moment we arrived at the dock, we discovered how different river and ocean cruises are - of course, we knew that, but it was very interesting to experience it. For instance, the captain of the River Empress met us at the van and took our luggage from us, yes, the captain! Every staff member on a river cruise does double and triple duty. These boats are small, the River Empress holding only 130 passengers, so the staff has the time, the inclination and yes the duty, to wear lots of hats, but it's clear they are enjoying themselves. The captain on the River Empress also is very young, coming from a long familial line of Rhine River captains, and I think he just enjoyed being front and center, playing a very active role in the guest experience at all levels, which the guests definitely appreciated! Our cabin, 312, was small, but we knew it would be. It was gorgeously appointed, top amenities and features, beautiful marble bathroom. Very posh. We loved our very large picture window which was like a giant flat screen TV frame looking out at the passing scenery as we would cruise along. We would sit on the chairs, our small table between us, enjoying the views. Going through the many sets of locks, looking out from your cabin, was very interesting, as the walls of the locks would be only inches from your window, the room darkens as if it's night, fascinating! Of course we spent most of our time when cruising on the top deck, moving all about the boat - there are many places on board to enjoy the views. There is actually little cruising time while you are on board, though, as travel is primarily at night, and during the day, you are on shore. The main body of cruising was the day when the boat sees the majority of the castles, a stretch on the Rhine when there are castles on both sides of the river, your head bobbing from side to side! The cruise director that day broadcasts a live commentary in the public areas explaining the historical significance of each of the castles, excellent. The ports of call are undeniably amazing, picturesque medieval village after picturesque medieval village. We enjoyed the Alsace area of France and the Rheingau of Germany. All excursions were expertly curated by top guides. Like everything on Uniworld (food, adult beverages), the shore excursions are included, no extra fee. However, three supplemental shore excursions are offered and they are timed such that you can do the free excursions AND the additional cost excursions. The cost for the additional excursions is remarkably low, so we took all three and are thrilled we did. After all, when will we ever be back here?? Our philosophy is to enjoy now, because who knows what tomorrow will bring - and who would want to miss a tour of the Black Forest or a tour of the Heidelberg Castle or a tour of the Marksburg Castle?? Not us, we did the tours, and they were some of the best and most memorable. But, like I said, all excursions offered were wonderful, lots of information provided by dynamic guides. The food on board was truly remarkable. Each dish at dinner felt like it was coming out of a 5 star kitchen, each dish individually prepared, fresh, bright, gorgeous presentation, excellent flavors - nothing bland or milk toast about the food. The chef is cooking for people who know and appreciate a quality experience. Breakfast is served as a buffet but you can also order many dishes made for you off the menu. Lunch is also served as a buffet, all beautiful fresh items. The chef cooks locally - items on the buffets and menus reflect the local produce and products of the various ports we stopped in daily. Produce and food products are brought in at the various ports of call. That is a very special thing and a highlight of the Uniworld experience. A special Savour Dinner was served three times on our cruise, three times so that every guest had a chance to experience it - you sign up for it - no extra cost, remember, everything is included on board (except for a few high end liquors, but their standard pours and vintages are exceptional). The Savour Dinner is served outside on the top deck with an even more special menu than the menu that is already special in the dining room! The chef comes and talks to the Savour guests about the dishes, the sommelier discusses the wine pairings - very lovely, fabulous meal as we drifted past the unparalleled scenery of the Rhine shores. Food is available throughout the day - the dining room has specific hours but at the bar, (the bar being the heart of the ship for the guests, BTW, as that's where all talks are given, entertainment is performed, etc) a light late breakfast is served and then sandwiches can be ordered in the afternoon in between the dining room hours for lunch and dinner. No need to ever be hungry, exceptional food is always available. I spoke to one guest who was suffering from insomnia and was served a lovely snack at 3am. The passenger comes first and foremost with Uniworld, that was clear. Being a small boat, you pretty quickly get to know your fellow guests which is a very nice thing, or not, up to you! Key to note is that no seats for meals are assigned, you can sit anywhere you want in the dining room during the dining times - you can sit alone, you can sit with new friends - there is no pressure at all. There are no huge communal tables, but if you choose to sit with new friends, then the staff is happy to push several tables together for you. So you can make friends, or not, it's your choice. The gym on board the River Empress is of necessity, pretty small, but it has everything you need, including a great view out of the windows as you workout on the elliptical or treadmill! A word to the wise, as I'm so very sorry we missed this opportunity - there are roughly a dozen bicycles on board that the guests can take out on their own in the villages when the boat is docked. The Fitness Director led a group of passengers on a bike ride from Boppard to Koblenz, Germany, while the ship cruised that route - thus, a dozen-ish passengers biked to the destination to which the ship sailed, a very fun experience for them! We didn't sign up in time to do this, maybe next time! We appreciated the washers and dryers for the guests' use - no charge, and the ship provides the laundry soap. Our experience with Uniworld was wonderful - first class, but not in the least stuffy, the staff made us feel very welcome! Read Less

My wife and I celebrated our 25th anniversary on Uniworld's Castles of the Rhine cruise in June 2015. Our previous cruise experience mostly centered around large Princess ships, but we wanted to spend time in Europe and river cruising has always appealed to us. Despite travel issues and some lousy weather, our experience was marvelous. The service provided by the Uniworld crew and staff is truly unparalleled. The food was particularly good, especially the dinners, and we were made to feel incredibly special and pampered on board. My wife has gluten and dairy allergies, and she was accommodated without hassle. I can't emphasize how good the food was...buffet breakfast and lunch always included something unique, and dinners were a gourmet treat - complete with wine pairings chosen by the ship's sommelier. We were in suite 404, which was simply huge - about the size of a nice hotel room - and well-stocked. The boxboard experience was phenomenal, and the excursions were top-flight. Since most Uniworld excursions are included in the price, and you don't have to sign up ahead of time, there was no pressure in making decisions. The few "add-on" excursions ranged in price from $29 to $79 and we did most of them, and they were well worth the price (the cost was incurred because the excursion involved an admission ticket or extra transportation). The personal treatment was spectacular. We got to the embarkation town of Basel still missing one piece of luggage, even though we flew business class, and in telling one of the ship's employees about it they immediately made effort to resolve the situation. The airline told us we'd get our bag on Monday evening (embarkation was Sunday), but once the ship took over we received our bag as we left our stateroom for dinner on Sunday night. Ship personnel were great - particularly the butlers and the cruise director, who was very knowledgeable and, apparently, able to subsist on maybe 3 or 4 hours of sleep per night. We ended our cruise in Amsterdam and the leaving process was simple and uncomplicated. It was an amazing experience and we're already planning our next Uniworld adventure... Read Less

Due to high water levels, passengers were loaded in Speyer, 3.5 hours down the Rhine. No advance notification even though they knew at least 3 days ahead that the situation was not going to improve. Pax were met by 2 persons who said they worked for UniWorld, told to leave the luggage riverside, told to get into a van, taken to a skanky restaurant down the road, told that there was no time to order a meal, waited on the pavement for a big bus, waited for more pax, then driven to the ship. Told on the ship by the Cruise Manager that this happens all the time on river cruises and it is an "act of God" shrug of the shoulders and dismissed. Next day, we are told to fill up our water bottles (gift of UniWorld in our rooms) given 15 euros each for lunch money and sent back on the bus for 3.5 hours bus ride to Colmar, the first town on our itinerary. Ditto for the second day, albeit a shorter 2.5 hour drive to Strasbourg. Really, is 15 euros what a lunch is worth on UniWorld? Basically it was a bus tour with sleeping on a ship. On the fourth day, the cruise director triumphantly announced that our cruise will now begin. For this, they gave $1,000.00 credit for a future cruise. Future cruisers, please be forewarned that your river cruise on UniWorld could end up to be a bus tour for parts that God acted on. As it happens all the time, this is the arrangement you will receive. Read Less

River cruising's dirty little secret- sometimes you don't get to cruise. We knew the day before we left home the ship would not be meeting us in Basal. Met by a bus at the dock and transfer was very seamless. Taken to Kehl Germany, even further up the River than originally planned and sat there for four days (with a Viking Ship lashed to us for 3 days - that means people on that side of the boat had NO VIEW). Bus rides to excursions got longer and longer as we were further and further away from the planned excursions. Wednesday night we were told we were getting off the boat and would be in a Hotel in Weisbadden for two nights. Friday lunch we were told we would be getting back on the boat in Mainz for the next day and a half. A few excursions had to be cancelled or shortened due to extra time spent in buses. The staff, especially the cruise director Tomas and his assistant, turned themselves inside out to make it work. (Other things at play- a train strike and even a landslide!) When we could not get back to the boat for lunch we were given money to buy our own meal. The bus drivers became our heroes (3 point turns on mountain roads) for their inventive routes around all the traffic jams and we got to see parts of the country we would not have and even local curiosities like the self cleaning toilet seat at a road side rest area. Uniworld went so far as to charter another boat to take us on an hours long cruise through the Castle/vineyard area on the Rhine River. Because we went south to get back on the boat, we got a magical night time tour through the Castles and River towns when they were all lit up. Before we disembarked we had a compensating discount on a future cruise in our hands. We felt this was not adequate for all the upheaval we experienced. The trip became pretty grueling after spending so much time on the buses and the packing and unpacking was not what we paid top dollar for. Leaving the hotel in Weisbadden was done under a lot of pressure. Through our travel agent, we contacted Uniworld and they have come back with a much more adequate compensation package. I feel they have made good by us. Take away - pick your season for the Cruise carefully and pick your River as carefully. Our travel agent addressed this issue and was told the the Rhine is very reliable. While well controlled by the countries on the River, the Rhine floods ALL the time - the barriers all along the route speak to its history. Read Less

For starters, Uniworld neglected to inform us that there would be a pickup at our hotel due to high water at the embarkation point. The physical condition of the ship is very nice. Clean, modern, decor a bit overdone but still very nice. Unfortunately, a day or so into the cruise passengers began coming down with a respiratory ailment that spread very quickly with the result that when walking down the hall all you could hear were people coughing. There was never any recognition of this condition by the ship's management nor any accommodation made for those too ill to come down to the dining room. While service in the dining room and lounges was good, the food quality did not meet expectations. If Uniworld aspires to be the "Seabourn" of river cruising it needs to step up its game. Read Less

The waiter staff could not have made you feel anymore welcome, they truly made it their priority to make you feel at home! We were also the youngest couple at 33/41 and have no idea why the majority of cruise guests are much older. This made no difference to our experience and we encourage younger couples to get onboard! Your missing out big time! We cant wait to do another cruise with Uniworld and cant recommend this high enough to anyone considering a river cruise. Don't look at the others! Go with Uniworld you wont be dissapointed! Read Less

This was our third cruise with Uniworld and was a really great experience with a most interesting program each day. We travelled down the Rhine from Basel, up and down the Mosel, then along the Rhine to Amsterdam. We travelled in October and just missed the grape harvest but saw some beautiful autumn colors which made up for the cooling temperatures. Cruising the Mosel and seeing the Rhine castles again were wonderful experiences. The villages and cities along this route are exceptional and historically so interesting that a longer stay in the area would be worth thinking about. We had two wine tastings, one in the upper Mosel at Ediger-Eller with a first generation wine maker, Stefanie Vornhecke, and one at the Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler cellar in Bernkastel. We were shown some really nice rieslings. The River Queen is a beautiful river boat with lovely timber work and beautifully maintained. What a treat to be able to travel on such a boat. The staff were truly exceptional and provided outstanding service throughout the cruise. We recognised the restaurant manager from a previous cruise when he was a (very good) waiter and it added some fun when we went to the restaurant and were treated like royalty. Food and wine was excellent. I still fondy remember the cheese selection on the first cruise but maybe the types they had were more to my taste. Now that there is an open bar, a lot more cruisers have a drink at various times like before and after dinner and this made for a more friendly feeling on board. Overall a great cruise experience.
