This trip from Basel to Amsterdam over 13 days was so good. Last year we went on the Danube from Budapest to Prague but this has much more scenic vistas. My number one tip is to book your trip through Costco. We got a shipboard credit of $300 and a cash card for $1300. On the ship the crew was amazing and so hard working. The guests were very friendly to each other and we got to know some wonderful new friends. We had great weather. The included tours were very comprehensive and there were just 3 extra cost tours. My minor complaints were that the dinner menu was not to my liking. Some items that I would never eat. I am not a big drinker but all drinks are all included in this tour. Also, the layout of the dining room for the breakfast buffet was cramped. I would highly recommend Uniworld. Read Less

We were fortunate to find this particular cruise through a special on "Black Friday." We only knew that we wanted to try a river cruise, and are delighted this was the one. We had lived for a summer in Germany many years ago and found joy to be in Germany again. Our stateroom was always clean and we found it very comfortable. Since you spend little time in the stateroom it was adequate despite being on the small side with a small, but well arranged bathroom. Our cabin steward took care of everything. This was one place where having gratuities take care of came in handy. My luggage was lost and the people who met us in Basel worked to find it. After we were on the ship I was reassured by our Cruise Director and he worked hard, calling around until the bag arrived. The public areas of the ship were lovely and very comfortable. It was a joy to sit in the lounge with an excellent cocktail and a few munchies to settle from the busy days. If we sat on the upper deck while cruising, staff kept up with drink orders so well. Excursions were well planned and very interesting. My husband is a historian and was glad to find they were accurate. Gentle walking tours made it possible for me to go. Arthritis makes me slow, but I can keep going. I was exhausted after one excursion when there was no slow walker tour. All the leaders had excellent English and were interesting, but one this one day I was made to feel that I was causing a problem. Others on the trip were irritated for me. I had to miss one excursion because there was no Slow Walker on an exceedingly hot day. Everyone that went said they were glad I did not go because of the speed of the tour. I complained and there were slow walker groups for all other tours. Lectures on board were interesting and useful. Brexit had recently happen and our cruise director's explanation helped me understand it so much better. I really do not have an adequate vocabulary to praise the food. Local and excellent with wonderful service meals gave us many happy memories to take away. Servers were very patient and explained things well. Soups were particularly good on the whole trip and we often asked for both soups. We would start with a small amount of both wines, then settle on one. No raised eyebrows, at least in our presence. :-) A mechanical malfunction was serviced as soon as they could, with good communication with us. This showed us how the crew was indeed a family and could work together. On the hot upper deck they rushed around moving us to shade, seeing we kept hydrated and providing whatever we wanted to drink. The whole crew worked to make us comfortable for an excellent dinner on deck. A stipend was given to people who wanted to dine in the town nearby. All in all it was an incredible trip. No other words need be said, other than we could not wait to plan another cruise. Will never stray from Uniworld, they spoiled us so thoroughly. Read Less

This was our second UniWorld cruise, and my third river cruise. UniWorld by far exceeds other river cruise experiences that I or any of my friends have enjoyed. While most of the European river cruise companies follow similar itineraries, the total cost and experience vary from one line to another. On this ship, Captain Heinrich mingled with passengers and greeted us as we returned from excursions. The crew were attentive, friendly, and accommodating--to a person. Food was excellent--in fact we returned to the ship for meals at times when we were on shore nearby and had excellent dining opportunities. Dinners were outstanding and it was always fun to find out what the Chef would prepare for us next. The menu offered wide varieties, local flavor, consistently delicious and served by the most outstanding staff. The staterooms are very comfortable, quiet, with the feel of a nice hotel. The bed was very comfortable. Excursions were just the right length, led by very good guides, and we often felt sympathy for other (non UniWorld) passengers whose excursions had them walking lengthy uphill climbs or altered itinerary due to rain. When about 6 river ships had a high water delay (at a loch) the UniWorld Cruise Manager and Captain absolutely worked miracles to arrange excursions of excellence. The excursions we were able to select, while the ship was waiting for the loch to open, were some of the best. On a holiday Sunday and Monday, coach, drivers and guides were arranged. It was (to the passengers) as if this were effortless. The transport and guides were known and vetted by UW thus the quality of our excursions were excellent! (While some of the other ships had passengers onboard with no excursions). We had village, castle, vineyards, cathedrals, art and architecture with or without plenty of walking. There was time to see and experience most of the towns and villages on our own if we so desired. A guide in Trier, an archeologist, was amazing in his ability to make the town's Roman ruins and history come alive. We are already planning two more UW cruises. This is the best way to get to know where, in Europe, you would like to come back for vacation. About cost. UW is all-inclusive. Tips, excursions, drinks (I never saw anyone intoxicated) special dining, everything. Once booked there is nothing to worry about, they WILL take care of you. Right down to the flight we booked through UW, they made the experience truly carefree. Returning guests are given a discount. Read Less

This was our 6th cruise with Uniworld and our third on the River Queen. A couple of things we love about Uniworld are the ships are unique as opposed to being cookie cutter and they do an outstanding job of hiring and training the staff. We always get a suite primarily for the larger bathroom with two sinks instead of one plus you have a butler which is very nice. The food is very good and plentiful and the service in the dining room is outstanding. This cruise was unique but I believe it demonstrates why we will always sail with Uniworld. High water on the Rhine forced a disruption with the itinerary the first several days. Piet, the cruise director, made adjustments on the fly and was still able to get most of the planned excursions taken care of to everyone's satisfaction. The afternoon of the 6th day my wife had a bad bicycling accident while on a ride with a group. The following evening it became obvious that she needed medical attention. The morning of the 8th day Piet and irma, the Hotel Manager, arranged for a taxi to take my wife, myself and our Butler Marko to the emergency room in Trier. Marko stayed with us the entire time and at 12:15 we were on our way back to the River Queen for a 1pm sailing. My wife suffered a concussion, 4 broken ribs and a bruised kidney. They wanted to keep her in the hospital for three days but she declined because she knew she would get good care and rest on the ship. That was a huge understatement. The staff took amazing care of her over the balance of the cruise. Marko was at her beck and call. He checked with her before every meal to see if she was hungry and then took her order which he then delivered to her while she was in bed. He would check in multiple other times throughout the day to see if there was anything he could get her or do. We cannot say enough about the care and attention my wife received. We have always had great service on all of our Uniworld cruise but this was over the top. If you are considering a river cruise Uniworld needs to be at the top of your list. Read Less

Fist of all, I can't say enough about Uniworld the company. What a class act! And the company focus of customer service permeates all through the staff. As an example: The Rhine River was at flood stage during our cruise, making it impossible to navigate some of the lochs. All of the river cruise ships had to dock in one area and wait for the river level to drop before continuing. While the rest of the cruise ship passengers sat around in the same place for two days, Uniworld made special arrangements for buses to take us to the towns and tours we otherwise would have missed (at no additional cost). Once the river dropped, every ship moved on, but we were the only ones that never missed a stop! AND, Uniworld later gave us a sizeable discount on a future cruise just for the inconvenience. The River Queen is an absolutely beautiful ship, Every detail is lovely. The ship is immaculate and extremely warm and inviting. Our cabin was perfectly appointed and extremely comfortable. It was a luxurious oasis to retire to every evening. The staff was absolutely outstanding. Polite, helpful, extremely competent and friendly. It felt like we were among friends the entire trip. The food was varied, plentiful and delicious. The itinerary was perfect. Not only did we travel the Rhine from Basil Switzerland to Amsterdam, but we went up the Mosel River to Luxembourg. This was the most beautiful part of the trip, and shouldn't be missed! This was an outstanding itinerary on a beautiful boat with a fantastic crew supported by a quality company. I cannot say enough about how impressed we were with Uniworld... So much so we are booked on two more cruises in 2017! Read Less

We have cruised multiple times in the past but this was our first river cruise. OMG! We cruised from Basel, Switzerland down the Rhine River, up the Mosel River to Luxembourg, then back to the Rhine, finishing up in Amsterdam. The itinerary was absolutely fabulous. We had such a wonderful time exploring the various towns along the way. You simply can't beat this itinerary! The River Queen was a beautiful boat, wonderfully appointed, comfortable and a pleasure to cruise on. The crew was no less than outstanding. From the Captain on down, every crew member did their utmost to ensure each guest was comfortable, well taken care of and having a great time. The food was outstanding and the service top notch. Our cabin, while tight space wise, was well appointed and comfortable. Our excursion manager was fantastic. The buses were very clean and comfortable and the drivers were excellent. All of the tour guides in each stop were easy to understand, extremely knowledgeable and attentive to questions and/or concerns. Entertainment on board was limited, but there was never a lack of things to do. Overall, we could not have been more impressed with our Uniworld experience. It was well worth the money! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the origination and destination and the fact that we had sailed the previous year with Uniworld. The entire staff of the first cruise and this cruise were absolutely outstanding. It was very clear that their primary goal was to ensure that their guests were well taken care of commencing from the time of purchase of the cruise and even after the cruise ended. The meals were always expertly prepared and the service at mealtime was individualized. Excellent wine, beer and drink selections. The tours were well thought out and the guides were excellent, much information shared. Both the ship's captain and the tour director managed to provide continued services and tours even when the ship was docked due to an unnavigable (Rhine) river due to heavy rains and river height and flow. The wait staff in the dining room always engaged the guests and were attentive to details, remembering individual likes and dislikes. Read Less

This was our third cruise with Uniworld and was a really great experience with a most interesting program each day. We travelled down the Rhine from Basel, up and down the Mosel, then along the Rhine to Amsterdam. We travelled in October and just missed the grape harvest but saw some beautiful autumn colors which made up for the cooling temperatures. Cruising the Mosel and seeing the Rhine castles again were wonderful experiences. The villages and cities along this route are exceptional and historically so interesting that a longer stay in the area would be worth thinking about. We had two wine tastings, one in the upper Mosel at Ediger-Eller with a first generation wine maker, Stefanie Vornhecke, and one at the Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler cellar in Bernkastel. We were shown some really nice rieslings. The River Queen is a beautiful river boat with lovely timber work and beautifully maintained. What a treat to be able to travel on such a boat. The staff were truly exceptional and provided outstanding service throughout the cruise. We recognised the restaurant manager from a previous cruise when he was a (very good) waiter and it added some fun when we went to the restaurant and were treated like royalty. Food and wine was excellent. I still fondy remember the cheese selection on the first cruise but maybe the types they had were more to my taste. Now that there is an open bar, a lot more cruisers have a drink at various times like before and after dinner and this made for a more friendly feeling on board. Overall a great cruise experience.
