This experience was our first cruise and it was brilliant for a huge variety of reasons. All staff on board did an excellent job. It goes without saying that the ship was clean and the food on board was the finest I've ever had although for me, it was not the most important aspect of the trip because that's just how I am. To single out anyone would almost seem unfair on everyone else but I was the type of person who really appreciated the dedication that the cruise manager gave, it's like he was available 24/7. (Did he ever have time to sleep?) The fitness guy was fantastic but for all sorts of different reasons. His daily classes and his conversations with me have inspired me to help change my lifestyle and here I am, almost 3 months after the cruise, continuing to live a more healthy life. I have taken time to send this review so that I could find a moment to choose my words carefully and I didn't want to leave anyone out. The guides and entertainment professionals were all great characters and all had their charm and enthusiasm for what they were doing. They all had their own style and managed to convey a love for what they were doing which in turn helped me and my family to love the fun-packed, informative holiday through a number of interesting European places finishing in Amsterdam. Before travelling the overall cost sounded a lot to me. However, when you consider what we did and how there was such attention to detail by the staff, I am sure this represented excellent value for money. Read Less

We wanted to see the Christmas markets in Germany and were not disappointed. The staff aboard the AmaStella were outstanding, from cruise director Sonja Lodewijkx to our "personal" waiter, Dragos, and I say personal because that's the way he treated us, was just excellent. With the incident that occurred in Strasbourg, captain Rene decided to move the ship from the French side to the German side for the safety of everyone. Cruise director Sonja did an excellent job of find new excursions for the entire ship and did so with very little time, considering the circumstances. Thank to you all the staff aboard the AmaStella for ensuring the safety of it's passengers. The Christmas party on the next to last evening was fantastic. It was so much fun, no one wanted it to stop. Each meal was a culinary delight but I blame head chef Tomi for making me buy larger waist pants. All in all, and excellent experience. Read Less

I can't recommend Viking highly enough. We had an amazing time. The crew were so kind, the food was incredible and the beds were more comfortable than mine at home. I felt that the cruise was an excellent value for the money and would have expected a higher price for how good of an experience we had. I enjoyed the variety of excursions available to passengers and just relaxing on the boat as well. I get motion sick, but could not tell that we were moving. I loved being able to see the beauty of three countries while staying in one room and not having to worry about finding my way to tourist attractions or popular areas. My grandma cannot walk very far and she was still able to enjoy the trip. We chose to extend our trip with three nights in Amsterdam and I am so glad we did. The flower markets, museums and the Anne Frank House were well worth it. The only downside to the trip was that it was not longer. If anyone is considering a Viking Cruise, don't hesitate! Read Less

I chose this cruise because I heard they cater to gluten free needs. They also catered to my dairy free needs. Much of the menus had foods I shouldn't eat, so they altered the food and made it special for me. Daily, they had gluten and dairy free deserts that were yummy and good looking. I had cookies, cakes, sorbet, and more. I feasted! They also had gluten and dairy free bread as well as afternoon cookies. They were very nice and accommodating. Also, I had a medical problem where I had to be taken to the hospital due to a contact lens getting stuck in my eye. Jeannette took me to the University hospital and stayed with me to translate. She was very helpful and nice. I would definitely choose to go with Ama again. My room was very nice, even though it was on the bottom floor. I had two big windows and could see out plenty well. I didn't feel claustrophobic at all. The tours had small groups from 4 to 15 each, rather than large groups of 40, which made it really nice and the tour leaders were great. Read Less

We were wowed by the crew especially the cruise manager “Marcia”. The food was excellent and suited all types of tastes and appetites along with the abundant poured wines paired with all the meals .(except breakfast Thank God)! We saw lots of other cruise companies as we traveled up the Rhine and our ship always looked the best and had active guests and crews having fun on deck all the time . Others cruise ships seemed to not have the same energy . Our on shore activities were great especially the hired by ama tour guides in each port , turely amazing and so knowledgeable and fun to follow through village listening to all the history and amusing details of our visit . Having completed a river cruise 3 years ago on the Danube with another river cruise line we were looking again to another great cruise. This time it was with Emerald and we weren’t disappointed. Our pickup at Zurich airport went flawlessly and we were soon on the Emerals Sky. Originally we were supposed to be on the Emerald Destiny but due to low water levels we were changed to the Sky. This didn’t present any problems however as the crew of Sky, excuse the pun, went overboard to make us feel so welcome. Arriving way before our expected arrival time our cabins were soon made ready and we were able to settle in and relax a little from a long flight and have a light lunch. Even Captain Stamen Dimitrov and Cruise Dorector Balazs were there to greet us on our arrival. Certainly a sign of things to come as we could not say more about the great service we received from all of the crew throughout the cruise. The Rhine cruise likely many in Europe is a trip through history and the tours and the guides we were fortunate to have were first class. All were well organized and having an “active” tour was a great option. The only bike option was in Amsterdam however so another on the cruise would likely go over well. Our dining experience was pretty much 4 star and the service was excellent although a little bit of extra help at the omelet station in the morning might have sped things along. Entertainment was fairly low key as things tend to be on a river boat cruise, just a pianist, but we should comment that the electronic violinist who came aboard one evening was excellent. In closing we would like to make special mention of our Captain Stamen Dimitrov who was so personalable, and skilled in navigating our ship safely through low water levels to reach our destinations. Also our Cruise Director Balazs who worked so hard to organize all the tours and events and made them go so well. Thank you. Still waiting for the photo Balazs. Read Less

This was our first cruise ever, my wife and I did not like the idea that we may not have enough free choices on cruise and have to follow their schedule rather than yours. But this cruise changed all that perception, it was very well organized, with varieties of activities we could choose from and it appeared that Viking has a great local connections whereever we visited. From airport transportations to local hotel choices, all the concerns we had evaporated, meticulous and courteous services. The cruise staff, I have to say that almost perfect, great smiles, very attentive, always around available. We met a lot of people from all over the world, wish we had more time to get to know them. We are still in touch with another couple from New Jersey, we had so much of fun together. We had pre & post cruise in Lucerne and Amsterdam, even that was arranged very well. For over 12 days travelling through many places and 4 different countries, there was no single issue or mishap, on excursions, transportations, hotels, I would say that is rare. We are looking forward to get on board with Viking hopefully soon. Read Less

What a wonderful way to travel!! Avelon Waterways met all my expectations and then exceeded them. Every member of the crew was friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and content. We ran into low water levels on the Reine that required us to exchange boats so we could continue our travels toward Amsterdam. This could have been a major irritation but it was done so smoothly and professionally that it caused only a very slight change in our expected itinerary. We were extremely fairly compensated for the minor inconvenience. The tours were interesting and well done, with ample time to explore on our own at our leisure. The company offered a tour guide for "gentle walkers" at each port which was very helpful for those who needed a bit of extra time. Meals were delicious with enough options to please all palates. There was only one seating which meant there was never a feeling of being rushed to prepare for another meal service. Wait staff were friendly on both boats and made the meals that much more enjoyable. A final note, the crews of both boats had to efficiently get their passengers off their respective vessels, clean them, receive new passengers then do it all again 3 days later. We never saw any sign of any of them being irritated, disgruntled or rushed. The sign of a well run company is not how they perform when things go smoothly but when they don't. Read Less

Never considered, nor had any interest in this type of cruise/vacation. Suddenly after receiving an email with offer of special pricing for cruise & airfare, we decided to "go for it". So glad we did. Viking made us feel like their only passenger from the very first day until our return home. They really know how to manage every angle of your vacation, while at the same time totally staying out of your way. From meeting us at the airport on arrival, to stacking our luggage in front of our bus prior to disembarkation, we were totally convinced Viking truly deserves their reputation for being #1. Ship was awesome, and service at the level of a 5 Star hotel/restaurant. Our suite cabin was beautiful and just the right size. We definitely recommend the 2 room suite over a single. Ports were well planned and thought out, as were the shore excursions. Buses were like new, clean, comfortable and the drivers never once had us wondering if we were going to survive the trip. Our only issue was related to the crowds we encountered while on tour(s). Not sure how this could be avoided by Viking or anyone else for that matter; perhaps less famous/popular locations. Of course that too would to some degree defeat the purpose of the trip, so just be prepared for lots of people and lines. The best feature of the trip was perhaps the least noticed; the crew. These people are truly wonderful and so professional. Many we probably never even saw, such as engineering, navigating, etc. The entire onboard staff was professional, ready to assist us at any time, in any way possible. Ship was clean, quite and felt like it wasn't even moving most of time. Food was beyond our expectation and the service was head spinning. Many knew and called us by our first names. How they do that is a mystery, but really highlights Viking's promise of being first class from beginning to end. Read Less

A river cruise was attractive based on the size of vessel, the variety and attractiveness of destinations and number of destinations on a single trip. Had seen Viking advertisements over the years and had identified as something we were interested in. Europe has been a targeted destination for years. The shore excursions included in the package were very good. They involved bus travel, walking and biking if you were interested. They gave you a good sense of your port destination and allowed plenty of time for your own exploration. We fully expect to take another Viking cruise in the future and have felt very comfortable recommending them to others. As a cautionary statement, while airport layovers are no fun, we would recommend allowing a little more time between flights going over as we missed our connection at Heathrow and almost didn't make embarkation. The extra days in Amsterdam at the end of our cruise were good idea. Viking was helpful in arranging transportation to airport even though had been off the boat for two days. Read Less

Hadn't planned on a cruise at this time, but the combination of price, ports of call, and opportunity caused us to jump at the chance to see parts of Italy, Switzerland, France and Germany that we had not visited. We opted for the pre-cruise trip to Lake Como, which was excellent. Even though we were two plus hours late on our arrival at Milan, we were met by a Viking Representative and whisked to Lake Como in a very nice Mercedes sedan. Our guide was both knowledgeable and delightful. There were only 10 of us, which made our tours around the lake and town more enjoyable. Our coach trip through Switzerland was beautiful. When we arrived in Basel, we immediately boarded our boat, our bags were delivered to our stateroom and we attended the welcome aboard meeting prior to dinner. On the river cruise, the shore excursions were well run and informative, and service was outstanding. Our Program Director aboard the Mani was personable and very well informed about the history and customs of the places we visited. Food was very good, selections for each meal were many, and again, service was outstanding. At the end of the cruise we (on our own), stayed a few days in Amsterdam, then flew to Prague for a few days, and Viking, included in our "free air" flew us back to Kansas City. I was very impressed with the entire experience from the time we landed in Milan until we left the Mani in Amsterdam. Read Less

We started our journey two days prior to our 10 night cruise on the AMAPrima by acclimating to the time change (9 hour time difference from CA) in Zurich, something we highly recommend regardless of your starting disembarkation point. Get acclimated to the time change then hit the cruise. The train from Zurich to Basel took us through the heart of Zurich to the pastoral countryside on the way to Basel which was a short one hour ride. Upon arriving to our disembarkation point in Basel we were warmly greeted by the crew who took our luggage to be delivered on board for us to our cabin. Our cabin was located on the upper level with a balcony and french balcony. We sat outside everyday on the balcony as our preferred morning ritual that was quiet and scenic and very fun when going through the various locks. The cabin was spacious with a European Queen bed (King size bed in U.S) that was perfectly soft yet firm with great pillows for us side sleepers. You can spend time in your room and it is perfectly acceptable, but the ship offers so much more with the sun deck, rear private dining room (open for day use and a perfect place for a game of cards. Because of the incredible weather, we spent most of our time on the front bow in the shade, or on the Sun deck (which had to close on a number of days due to low bridges and locks) or the upper deck in front of the wheel house which was an ideal spot for our cruise through the middle Rhine gorge where dozens of castles dot the hillsides Each night we were greeted with happy hour and signature cocktails in advance of dinner and made the most of it each night with free cocktails expertly crafted by our new friend Namenia, and Sebastian who were great bartenders and hosts each night. We chose AMA because of their culinary rating above many of the competitive cruise lines, and we were not disappointed. Each night there was a Chef's Recommended Menu along with standard offerings served tableside by excellent waitstaff. When it comes to the wine and beer, you never have to ask for it because it just shows up and keeps flowing. Two days in and the staff knew our likes and dislikes and anticipated our desires. Truly a great dining experience each day. Breakfast and lunch offer similar offerings with extraordinary items and standard fare. The chef’s table dining room provides an intimate experience and not to be missed with an expert five course prix fixe menu delivered to perfection each night (same menu assures that all passengers have a chance to dine here). Onshore excursions were expertly guided by local historians and enthusiasts who all spoke English and told insightful stories with details of history, origin and thinking of the time. The guided tours were fun, but we also chose on more than one occasion to make our own way and to experience the local color more directly. Something to note is that of all of the shore excursions there are only three that require you to bus to the tour location; Riquewihr, Strasbourg and Heidelberg. Otherwise you can walk off the ship and you are in the heart of your destination. Each day allows for some form of excursion off ship, as much of the cruising is at night. We are already looking forward to our next cruise with AMA on the Danube. Nest time we plan to go with one or two other couples as this first trip was just my wife and me. We want to share the experiance with others. Read Less

It was a family cruise from kids to grandparents. We had some issues with our embarkment because our flight was delayed. However the cruise line waited for us and reimbursed us for the transportation from the airport. The crew worked mightily to insure our ease and education. It was a truly amazing experience for my first time in Europe. My wife and I fully intend to go again multiple times to see other parts of the world. The cabin was relatively roomy for a cruise ship with a nice balcony. We had two teenage girls traveling with us who enjoyed the trip, but were a little “cultured “out five days in. The nightly entertainment was varied and mostly enjoyable for a wide range of age groups. We enjoyed all but one of the shore excursions, and that was due more to the guide that’s the excursion. The food was varied including a menu every day from the local region favorites and a standard fair for those not willing to venture out of their culinary comfort zone. I chose this cruise when recommended by another family member. Included excursions made it easy to see the highlights of the cities visited. I would have like to see more entertainment available especially at night. It was fitted for a more mature crowd. Our group was ages 55-65 but we still like to be active after dinner. No lights on the shuffleboard for nighttime playing was a damper to the fun we were having. The food was good. Many, many choices. Staff were excellent and friendly. We were definitely dotted on! Transportation to and from ports and excursions was top of the class. Post and pre excursions were magnificent! Don't pass those opportunities to spend a few days before and after disembarking as this only added pleasure to our vacations! Airline transportation was very bad (American Airlines)! Delayed departure, food was horrible and as well as the choice of movies. The plane's drop down seat trays we're filthy. On board staff were below standards of friendliness. When flying overseas I prefer to have my own television with choices of movies/music/television shows. The movies were very juvenile which made the flight seem even longer. Read Less

We were looking for a special trip for our 35th wedding anniversary and decided on the Rhine Getaway cruise with Viking. A coworker of my husband recommended it. This was our first time traveling overseas and Viking made everything so easy. They greeted us at the airport and then escorted us to the ship. When we arrived our room was ready and our luggage at our room. The cabin was spacious and we loved our veranda deck. It was perfect for enjoying the beautiful views along the Rhine. We even got to enjoy an excursion the day we arrived in Basel. The city was enchanting. We enjoyed dining on the ship for most of our meals. The food was fantastic and some days were themed to the areas we were visiting. We enjoyed excursions every day. Some of these experiences we will never forget. The castles especially. The morning we cruised the Rhine to view the castles was one of the highlights. We even enjoyed just exploring on our own in some of the port cities. One of the most memorable parts of the cruise was the wonderful cake the chef prepared for our anniversary. It was beautiful. And we even received a bottle of champagne. Both were delicious. We celebrated with the new friends we made on the cruise. And finally I can’t say enough about how wonderful the service and staff were on this cruise. They called us by name and made us feel special. We tell all our friends how wonderful the service was. In fact the wonderful service is what has made us decide that we will definitely take another Viking cruise. Read Less

We had an incredibly marvelous time on this 8 day river cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. It was magical. The food was delicious and plentiful as was the wine and spirits. The daily excursions were extremely well planned and very interesting. We did not take any excursions that cost extra money and were very satisfied with all of them. One of the best aspects of Crystal river cruises is that everything is included in your price unless you choose extra money excursions or extra money wine and spirits. In addition we got about $500 of credits from American Express, whom we had booked through. This paid for laundry and gratuities to the charming staff. The entertainment was excellent for making social friends. Martin Kaye did a great job of getting to know most of the travelers and meeting their entertainment requirements. The other travelers were charming and very friendly. We made good relationships with several couples. The demographics was about 70% American, 20% Asian and 10% European. The ages were generally 60-80 with a few younger couples. By the way, there were no single travelers on this cruise. There were 2 couples of women travelling together. Read Less

The lounges are very nice and the service is beyond belief. All meals are excellant and servers are extremely attentive. I would rate Viking as one of the very best in the business...including service, coordination, cuisine, flight arrangements, transfers...you name it, and it was exceedingly well done. We traveled with friends and made new friends along the way. If you want to see more castles along the river, we commend the Danube. The Rhine is much wider, and more commercially travelled. Something totally different from a standard ocean cruise -- Christmas markets throughout Europe in the winter! Excellent cruise overall, with great food, friendly service and a clean, new ship in perfect shape -- even in the face of rainy weather in the 40s. Got to meet a lot of interesting people from around the world. The ports were fascinating, beautiful and the excursions uniformly first-rate, interesting and understandable. One of the highlights was the cruise director, who gave nightly summaries of upcoming ports and kept us informed about things to expect in the day(s) ahead. She was a natural comedienne as well -- intelligent, articulate, very funny, very friendly and great one-on-one as well as in front of the entire passenger contingent. Clearly professionalism across the board is valued among the crew, and the cruise director stood out as being far superior to any counterpart on the 30 or so ocean cruises that we have taken. Even the captain was accessible and willing to engage guests throughout the week. Oh, and the food and wine were superb! I would recommend this cruise line without hesitation! Read Less

We were blessed with good weather for most of the trip. The staff and especially the cruise director made the trip fantastic. The ship captain and crew lended to feeling of security and safety. The fellow travelers were for the most part compatible and easy to make friends. There were ample opportunities for excursions and often two or three choices at each port. There was a large bicycling group aboard that had their own agenda and apparently had a very nice experience. Three gourmet meals a day, including lamb chops for breakfast. The separate dinners were enjoyable, and the dining crew made us feel as family. There were no children on the ship and this was most appreciated in that river boats are not large and capable of entertaining youth! Read Less

Great crew and Magnificent food and excursions that were some of the best we have seen. We could not have been happier. I would recommend Viking River cruise anytime. The region is outstanding as you see all the Castles and the small towns. such a feeling to be with the locals. Looking forward to takin other Viking cruises to destinations that I have not been to. The cook on the ship was unique in his delivery of the dishes and made you feel you were eating what the locals eat, but presented in an fancy way. The Captain did an outstanding job sailing the ship through the locks and keeping us posted on any changes. It was a wonderful experience. Read Less
