I went on this cruise as part of a travel group of 20. There were some hiccups at the outset due to high water levels on the Rhine. Avalon did an amazing job to make sure their guests were well cared for and accommodated and still provided all the tours. UBER driver arrived 10 minutes early than 5 AM reservation but that was fine. $2.90 airport surcharge, booking fee $9.14, reservation fee $5.00. This was my 5th Viking Cruise, second time doing the Rhine. Our very first Rhine Cruise was July 2015. Wow! Viking has changed! Many of the optional excursions were included in 2015. The first half of this cruise was terrible. We had Viking arrange our travel and will never do that again. We paid the extra $100 for air plus ($200 total) which was a total waste of money. No one ever contacted us about our travel and they booked the worst flights we have ever had going overseas. It took 18 hrs and we missed the entire of the first day of the cruise.

We chose Avalon having got a good last minute deal and having heard from former river cruisers about infirm and very elderly clients on river cruises. Avalon has an ‘Active’ excursion leader and as such appeals to a slightly younger crowd. You do not have to be active to enjoy the cruise, it’s all at your own pace but the active excursions gave this cruise an edge in our opinion.
