I can't recommend Viking highly enough. We had an amazing time. The crew were so kind, the food was incredible and the beds were more comfortable than mine at home. I felt that the cruise was an excellent value for the money and would have expected a higher price for how good of an experience we had. I enjoyed the variety of excursions available to passengers and just relaxing on the boat as well. I get motion sick, but could not tell that we were moving. I loved being able to see the beauty of three countries while staying in one room and not having to worry about finding my way to tourist attractions or popular areas. My grandma cannot walk very far and she was still able to enjoy the trip. We chose to extend our trip with three nights in Amsterdam and I am so glad we did. The flower markets, museums and the Anne Frank House were well worth it. The only downside to the trip was that it was not longer. If anyone is considering a Viking Cruise, don't hesitate! Read Less

I've been reading about Viking river cruises for years in the brochures that arrive in my mailbox. Two years ago my sister and her husband took this trip. My sister (who is an avid complainer) not only had absolutely nothing to complain about, but raved about everything connected with their trip. That sold me. When my husband and I decided to give Viking a try, we chose the Rhine trip. Viking has an exceptional way of letting you research the ports you will visit, and details of excursions through their My Viking Journey portal on their web site. Since anticipation is a fun part of any trip, the portal really whets your appetite for the upcoming trip. Embarkation is beyond smooth. Our bags were whisked away to our cabin even before we climbed out of the cab that Viking had sent to pick us up at the airport. The ship, small by ocean cruse ships, was beautifully appointed and more than large enough to comfortably accommodate our 181 fellow passengers. Our cabin was very comfortable (loved the heated floor in the bathroom), pristinely clean, and taken care of by a steward who moved in and out quite unobtrusively with fresh flowers, fruit, and linens. The dining room was large enough to accommodate all guests at the same time, and there were no assigned tables/seating. The food was much better that any ocean cruise ship we've been on, and while there were not dozens of choices at each meal, there were more than enough to satisfy. Viking brings local artisans and artists onboard to entertain. From glassblowing to German folk music to classical strings, each experience was most enjoyable. The shore excursions were spot on. They showed us the medieval Europe that we came to see. Perhaps the most important thing here is that my husband is disabled (but not wheel chair bound). He was able to move about the ship easily. He was able to go on all of the included excursions (thanks to the "E" group that saw all the same sites as everyone else, but at a slower pace), and several of the optional excursions as well. The onboard staff as well as the tour guides and drivers were exceptionally knowledgeable, accommodating, and in most instances, just down right fun. We've already booked our next cruise - on the Danube! Read Less

Our first river cruise after over 20+ sea cruises. What a HUGE disappointment. Not much to shout about here, small cabins (no fridge even), average food (except last night gala dinner), non existent entertainment, very few tours included, indifferent cruise director. We were hoping to be "wowed" when we got on, but no, not so much as a welcome drink. It seems Riviera just cut every corner they can making for a very poor experience and DEFINITELY not worth the money they charged. We wish we had stuck to a sea cruise. At least we had gone with some good friends so we could all laugh about it all. Basel mooring was in an industrial area - how nice!! Drink prices were not too bad although we had paid the £99 drinks with meals package and made sure we got our moneys worth. If you are considering this cruise, don't wast your money, spend a bit more and go with another more upmarket company or stick to the sea. They also expected a 7-12€/person/day tip - plus tips for the Cruise Director - in your dreams!!! Read Less

We spent a week in Switzerland, starting in Geneva, we traveled on tomZurich, Zermatt and Basel where we got onto the ship. What a gorgeous country Switzerland is! Wethen took a Rhine cruise and ended up in Paris for 3 days. All taken care of by Viking. It was effortless, no hassels, first class hotels . The train ride was amazing and the tour guides are really superb, nothing was left to chance and our comfort was all that mattered. Food allergies were taken very seriously and the chef made sure everything was done correctly, the waiters were excellent and left nothing to chance they were truly five star. The tours were amazing, very knowledgeable guides and for the slower passengers there was always a group that took an easier path and fewer stairs. This was our 34th cruise, 2nd with Viking and we are now loyal Viking travelers. We have booked and Alaskan and a Mediterranean Ocean cruise for next year. Read Less

We did not stay in Basel before our trip as we were fortunate enough to have relatives in the area so we stayed with them, and visited Biel, Bern, and Gruyuere. We heard on other cruises that this was one of the most scenic cruises ..and they were right. They have made the embarkation and the disembarkation process very smooth and easy One wish that I do have is that you could get more information on your day to day itinerary before you get on your cruise. The cabins are comfortable, the beds are too and if you need a different pillow or a topper for the bed just ask. the bathrooms have more room than bigger cruise lines. The food was great and the on board entertainment and cultural experiences were spot on. We had exceptional cruise director N. Hale very knowledgeable and entertainer extraordinare. Everyone was very helpful and nice, the hotel manger saw to our every need. Be prepared though on this trip there was a lot of walking..not necessarily on the excursions but to and from the ship to get to the buses. But if you needed extra assistance our cruise director went out of his way to try and accommodate you. Even if it was hiring taxis to get you to the buses..for the few who really needed it. Oh! There is also an elevator on board .not a big one but enough for a wheel chair or motorized chair. The wait staff at breakfast and dinner by the second day knew who we were and already knew what we liked wether it was who liked OJ or coffee or tea or water or wine..I find that amazing..the best part for me was I got to celebrate the taste of Germany night on my birthday. I hope this review will help you decide to take one of Viking's Cruises this was our 3rd. You will also notice all the little extras they do for you..be surprised.. Read Less

Our cruise was awesome, every need was met. My wife used a walker and the cruise director went overboard to accommodate her. If it was too far to walk they would have a cab to take her to the bus. The wait staff at the dinning room were also attentive to our needs. At every meal we had unlimited beer and Wine. Viking does not nickel and dime their guests. In each port there is a free excursion. My Wife does not travel well, the Viking cruise of the Rhine totally relaxed her and pampered her so well that she can't wait to go on another Viking cruise. What I really liked about Viking cruises is that you spend at least 24 hours in each port which gives you a long time to expierence the culture of each city you are in I just say enough about the way Viking treats there guests Read Less

Our travel agent booked our entire vacation, We felt our trip with AmaWaterways was very close to a Five star vacation. On board ship all our needs were met. The staff on the AmaSonata were superb. The dinning room staff and chefs were outstanding, meeting all our dietary needs. The three in our group enjoyed the many different dishes our chef prepared and all the delicious breads that were prepared. Something for everyone... The cruise director was most informative for the different day trips we embarked upon. He was always at our service, a great asset to the cruise. We enjoyed the different activities and entertainment in the Lounge. Always kept immaculate for our enjoyment. The piano was a great plus for our group during cocktails and late night drinks with new friends. We are looking forward to our next adventure with AmaWatereays. Plus we felt safe on board ship, doors were always secured, Thank You one and all for a memorable vacation. Most not forget the impeccable service from our cabin steward. Read Less

We started getting treated very well from the moment we checked our bags. We didn't have to touch them till we got on the Idi. We were cruising for the first time together and without our children for the first time also. The ship was large but intimate. The ship was clean, quiet, and the trip up the river was very smooth. Our cabin felt huge. and it had a massive bed that was very comfortable. We had the pleasure of having a Veranda suite, right on the river level. It was spectacular. I enjoyed seeing swans and ducks most mornings. Every inch of the Idi was well cared for and that care was reflected in the care that the crew extended to its passengers as well. Our cabin was attended to at least twice a day by our steward Petra. She always had a smile on her face, as did every person we encountered working on the ship. Every meal we ate was a feast of the local cuisine. Dinner was local specialties but breakfast was everything you could think of. Dimitri (our chef) paid very close attention to our food allergies and every meal was vetted to make sure they were safe. Our servers Igor and Bogdan were exceptionally nice. We had a great deal of fun going on the tours during the day and at night the staff including Arturo and Vicki were so entertaining. Vicki detailed all the activities that were to follow in the morning and Arturo made sure everyone got bottles of water and a smile before the tours. The tour buses were so plush and very clean. We got to see castles and the stories that went with them. Windmills and what they did. Shopping and bicycle's, canals and castles, chocolate, interesting street markets. Vicki even helped us rent a car to go see my old unit where I was stationed when I lived there. We hit the markets at every port and loved it. We also had a wonderful time meeting all the different people on the Idi. We were among the younger bunch but everyone was so friendly and kind. I felt like I had a hundred friends who were all enjoying this fantastic voyage with us and it was all the better for it. Our tour guides were a variety of characters. Our favorites were Vicki from the Idi, Vicki with the hat, and the best was Rocko in Cologne. He was so funny and irreverent. A true comedian . The cruise was a relaxed special time to recharge and relax. I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone. We met people from Korea, Great Britain, Czechoslovakia and so many other places too numerous to recount. We met so many delightful and varied persons it was so sweet. I hope to take another river cruise on the Idi and many other Viking river ships in the future. I miss my friends on the crew and every soul we traveled with. It was awesome!!! Read Less

We were impressed with the Captain down to the dishwashers on the ship. The cabin was ample for our stay. The heated bathroom floors was an extra. The tours and guides were experienced and very knowledgeable. They were priceless when they went into the local customs and sights. There was lots of excercise walking for those of us who could. Those who were less mobile were accomodated and that were also be able to participate. The bus drivers were awsome and excellent drivers. There was a miniture golf and other activities on the top deck for all to partake of. We did golf and some shuffle board. The weather was cool so we did not stay topside when it was cold and rainey. The captain was a very interesting man and was very knowledgeable about the Rhine River. He was easily approachable and explany thing about his experience and the ships capabilities. This was a amazing cruise. Read Less

We used to pride ourselves on traveling on-the-cheap. We chose Viking because we were due to travel and the Viking offer looked fair. Also, the planning of our own trip was becoming burdensome. We took a chance and soon realized that we were getting far more than we expected. We were overwhelmed with how smoothly the trip went from start to finish. We really were treated as if we were the most important people on the boat. Our room was beautiful and the dining room and meals were outstanding. We loved the long-boat with the smaller number of people. Not long into the trip we knew a good number of the other guests by first name and even more as each day passed. We loved taking our wine on the top deck after dinner as the sun set. The boat was small enough that my young son quickly learned his way around and could be found easily when I wanted him. It was big enough that walking and exploring was scenic and enjoyable... always putting us in the company of new friends. Parents drank wine while the kids played shuffle board and tackled the putting green. We travel every two years. Since our Viking trip, we're considering going every year. I can't imaging traveling any other way. Read Less
