Wanted the see Rome, Italy and Spain and timing was right. Food on ship became very. Boring by end of second week it was becoming difficult to know what to order or even pick from buffet.shore excursions are not fairly distributed ie: people with more expensive rooms are given priority on excursions thus it appears there money is better than mine. The ship is a very beautiful and luxurious cruising ship and organization is superb. Alternate dinning Manfredi's was very good but chef's table was menu was not appealing to us. Also these restaurants are selected with same criteria as shore excursions as mentioned above. Embarkation and disembarkation is very well organized and Viking makes sure you are well looked after and picked up and dropped off in exactly the right place and well on your way. Bus service both ways is comfortable and also well organized. Some of the shore excursions could allow more time for taking in some of the beautiful scenery and also more time at some of the shopping venues. Read Less

My friends needed one more and invited me. Am so happy they asked, and even happier I said yes. Being my first European trip made this even more special and Viking made sure the trip was nothing less than sensational. Viking stands head and shoulders above the cruise personnel in other shipping companies. Outstanding. Friendly employees (so many other shipping companies have downright sour employees), happy...and it seems to be REAL, helpful...soooo helpful with such a pleasant demeanor.. The personnel simply couldn't do enough for us. And they worked with such terrific attitude. Before each port we'd inquire as to any suggestions they had for personal favorites at that port and they happily gave us many hints. So sweet. The tour guides were fabulous...spoke very well in what was not obviously their first language (english), and worked hard at enunciating. Rarely did I not understand a word. They were so gracious and accommodating as well. Was blown away....and again say there is simply no comparison to other cruise lines. The buses and transport vehicles were absolutely immaculate.....fresh and clean smelling. Wonderful. I could go on and on, folks.....but you get my drift. On departing and once home I saw the bill and noticed a few discrepancies re food/bar bills. I called corporate and a few questions later was assured this would be investigated and corrected. And it WAS! My luggage was lost for a day or two, by the way, and Viking did everything possible for me....I do feel it was an airline loss and not the fault of Viking. Viking tracked my luggage down and with their usual great attitude and thorough ways presented me with my luggage withing 2 days. Quite a feat in my eyes. I am anxiously awaiting my next trip with Viking! Yes, it's a tad expensive however this company is reasonable considering the expert handling and wonderful service. Trust me on this one....they will present you with a beautiful experience. Valerie Read Less

Outstanding cabin, service from all crew members could not have been better, and the food was excellent. The Italian restaurant was one of the best I have eaten in and I lived in taly for five years. l am Elite status with Princess, but I will cruise Viking whenever possible. Have done a cost comparison with Princess and the cost is about the same or a little cheaper with Viking. Depending on the airfare deal offered. We took advantage of some of the extra tours and were vary satisfied. The private tour of the Vatican was exceptional. The bus tour of Rome covered all the highlight other than the Trevi Fountain and there is no way to get a bus in that area. Viking does not have their hand in your pocket all the time. They even furnish water when you leave the ship. This is not the norm on other cruise lines. They have done a great job of transitioning from a river cruise line to the ocean. Well done! Read Less

My wife and I were very impressed with the complete trip; from bow to fantail the ship was more that expected. The many common area's made it feel very comfortable and peaceful. We never had to wait for a great seat at the various venues. The venues and entertainment were first class. The many venues to chose from and the entertainers were very good and accommodating. The ship and its cabins were beyond my expectations. The spa area was better than my home health care facility. The food was excellent, with many different dining alternatives to chose from. The staff was the Viking excellence. After experiencing the 12 day Viking river tour, we came to expect excellent service and we were not disappointed. From embarking to departing the staff was first class. We were happy to award the tip, and gave a bit more to our cabin staff! We looking forward to the new ship on the Norway Scandinavian tour trip!! Read Less

This was a "trip of a lifetime" for me. I had never been to Europe, had been on a couple of Caribbean cruises, but they in no way compare to Viking. I tell people it was like sailing on a 5 Star Hotel! The ship layout is beautiful, there was alway a quiet place to go. I found the crew and staff very pleasant, never did we walk by an employee when we weren't acknowledged. Our first night there, we had the pleasure of meeting here Captain and his wife, after we had enjoyed a wonderful dinner at the "Chef's Table". They willingly joined us and ate their dinner, and continued to chat with us for over an hour, as well as have their picture taken with us. For the most part the excursions were great. I think Rome could have been arranged a bit differently; with allowing more time at the Collesium so we could actually go inside. Less time at the Vatican would have been okay; we had plenty of time for an inside tour. I loved all the dinners as well; we dined at The Restaurant, Chef's Table and Manfredi's - all were fabulous! Friends were celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on this cruise, and we had a very special night at one of our dinners! I would highly recommend Viking Ocean Cruises to everyone! I'm actually anticipating taking a River Cruise in the future - had always heard so much about them. Now I know what all the excitement is about! Read Less

Beautiful cruise ship Viking Star. About 900 guests with sufficient staff resulted in a relaxing and fun cruise. Shore excursions every day but one allowed us to explore many European cities and historical sites. At least one daily excursion was included. Dinner at speciality restaurants were excellent with great food, wine and beer included, and service. Great selection at buffet for all meals and lunch and breakfast venues were very well thought out. Nice theater and show variety catered to different tastes. About the only negative was the free Venice excursion was chaotic disembarkation and confusing return to ship. Since this was last day on ship we docked close to noon. So very little time to explore Venice. Should have had one additional day here. I would highly recommend this cruise. Read Less

Overall we had a fantastic time on our Viking Star "Mediterranean Odyssey" trip! The ship is absolutely beautiful and the Staff was very friendly and took special care of us. Some of the excursions were too long for us to take in the heat, amount of walking, etc., so we skipped a couple of those and just enjoyed a mellow day onboard ship. Glad we did this because folks who took those tours arrived back later in the day and looked very exhausted. The one day at sea seemed to appeal to lots of passengers because they could just relax and enjoy the amenities onboard ship. Our new favorite place is Croatia and we enjoyed both stops in this country. Part of our enjoyment was the excursions we took and both had excellent local guides, smaller groups, and we experienced some local customs and country scenery. We've taken two Viking river cruises in the past and really enjoyed those trips. It was hard to not compare the river cruises to this ocean cruise experience, but in the end, we enjoyed both experiences. River cruising was smaller and more personal and we saw beautiful scenery everyday. Because of the smaller size boat, we were able to connect with the same people everyday and became friends during the trip. The ship is much larger in size and number of people, so it was less personal than the river boat, especially for those of us traveling as a couple and not a group. But, in the end, we did meet lots of wonderful people and established a few new friendships. We did agree that the Viking Star was a perfect size "ship" and we probably would never travel on one of the huge ships. We would recommend both river cruising and ocean cruising with Viking! Overall we loved our cruise the Viking Star. Having experienced 3 Viking river cruises, we knew the quality of the Viking brand and we weren't disappointed once on board the Viking Star. Granted, we could have used a little more drawer space for our clothes, or did we merely overpack (again!)? No matter, we made do just fine. The bathroom had plenty of space for both his and her storage needs, and I loved that someone actually considered the ladies needs and included that little bench in the shower to make shaving our legs easier. Heated bathroom flooring is a wonderful touch too! We can't say enough about the wonderful Viking staff! They conduct themselves professionally at all times, yet they are genuinely warm and friendly and always willing to help in any way they can. Kudos to them all! The food was always excellent in every area that we dined in. Since I have several dietary restrictions, it's not always easy for me to just "pick something" off a buffet line. Yet everyone on board the Viking Star simply took it in stride when I said "Celiac with nut allergies". It was never an issue, I never became ill, and I was never hungry. Our one issue woud have to be with shore excursions. One serveral instances, they seemsed disorganized in getting people ashore. Additionally, they guides they hired were inconsistently understandable. When we've done the river cruises, all throughout Eurupe, we've never had a problem understanding the guide. Unfortunately, there were more guides we couldn't understand than those we could on this cruise. It was a disappointment, and quite frustrating. But still, overall, Viking Star was a delight. Loved the Spa area with steam room and snow room! Read Less

Overall the cruise was good but you could tell that not all the kinks were worked out of the systems. In the area of dining, one restaurant only had one special menu and if that was not to your taste, your option was a steak. In the other restaurants, food was good but could use some "simpler" fare such as simple common soups or similar rather than high end meals. Most of the shore excursions worked will except for those in Venice. In Venice everyone had to go ashore using tenders at about the same or close to the same time. This caused back ups. The stated reason was for security reasons. This could easily have been solved by allowing folks access to a controlled area of the dock with buses to take the people to tenders from the docks. Also the harbor tour of Venice had an open upper deck where folks were not shaded from the sun. Both of these detracted from the tour experience. Read Less

The ship was wonderful, the food was wonderful, and the staff (housekeepers, waiters.waitresses) were outstanding. After two Viking River Cruises we were afraid we wouldn't enjoy this larger ship as well as the river boats but we were sorely wrong. We never had difficulty finding somewhere wonderful to eat and our room was always kept in pristine condition. We had terrific meals in all of the restaurants as well as outstanding breakfasts and lunches. We never experienced crowds except when leaving the ship for a tour. We only rated this as average because of the complimentary tours. A few of them were not good at all. the guided tour in Barcelona was probably the best but all of the other tours were not up to what we would think was Viking expectations. The guides were not proficient in English, they were not well planned, and the one in Venice was terrible as was the one in Toulon. Either offer a tour that was up to what we have experienced in the past or do not offer complimentary tours. At least we would not have wasted our time. We could have had a wonderful day touring Venice on our own but from past cruises, we just expected Viking to be a cut above the average in all areas. Read Less
