This was my very first cruise experience. And While I thoroughly enjoyed the quality of the food, the service, the amenities, the decor, I had a difficult time understanding why the entertainment was so lacking. Starting with the complimentary tours-some of the guides were quite lackluster and not attentive to the group in terms of their need to maybe slow down or knowing whether or not everyone is keeping up. I don’t know that I was aware of any resource (besides Guest Services or booking an excursion) that I could utilize to locate points of interest at each of the ports. When I did approach guest services regarding things to do in a given port, all the person did was Google it. They didn’t seem to have any information readily available to relay. To me, it’s important to talk to people who have been to these ports, who have had experiences there, who have genuine recommendations for where to go. My favorite part was the bartenders and most of the wait staff at the bars. We found ourselves at the bar quite a lot because there wasn’t much else available in the evening that we enjoyed. The singers were doing their jobs but were rather cheesy. We found ourselves some nights just making the best of it. Having to shrug it off, laugh about it, then just try to enjoy it. I appreciated greatly the efforts to keep things and people clean and sanitized. Embarkation and disembarkation were always smooth and never any lines like I’d heard happens with other cruise lines. There were a few people who really stood out for us in terms of service. Zoran, Boban, Nicola, Martin, Vadim, Stefanjia. They were always smiling and happy to see us. Remembering our names, room numbers, what we liked to drink but they went over and above and we felt like we were their friends and they were welcoming us into their home. These people were more memorable to us than the ports we visited. Read Less

Just returned from the Viking Orion in the Mediterranean in July. Great ship, great service. A few minor issues. But here is the rundown.... 1, No coffee in the room because of a power issue. 2. Rooms were spacious and great storage,. 3. Ask for additional hangers. 4. Food was good overall, but the specialty dining was disappointing, I would not be concerned if you cannot get in. However, every night there were empty tables. 5. Not much to do at night, a little stuffy. One night was dancing under the stars which was a big hit ( more of those needed) 6. Drink package was worth is, however free wine was decent. 7. Outside eating was our fav place! Excursions 1. Our first port Sete was just terrible...we went to the spa in the afternoon, however my husband went to the 8 hour medeival town and just loved it!! 2. Marselle was good..just walking mostly 3. Monaco we had signed up for a walking tour and when the guide starting talking about the parking garage we left here and took the hop on bus around Monte Carlo which was great! The walking tour is boring! 4. St. Tropez was our favorite...just walked shop and ate. 5. Florence we hired a private driver and went on a pasta cooking class and wine tasting set up by my travel agent. The best day of the trip. 6, Florence the next day was very crowded, but fun. All in all a great ship and great crew. A little sleepy for my 25 and 26 year olds. Sometimes the mature crowd was a bit crabby for us...but we knew that going in. If you are looking for night life and gambling this is not for you! I love kids, but not having them on the ship was nice. Also, not many smokers on board which was also a treat. Read Less

We chose it because of Viking’s reputation. Also we really wanted to visit the countries on this trip. I learned quickly that all staff were eager to please. We had an awesome steward and housekeeping person. The cabin was small but well appointed. The beds were delightful, and the bathroom shower and sink worked well. The included tours were a bit variable, some were great at giving you a taste of the local flavor, while others seemed to be focused on dropping people off to shop in select areas. A visit to a Tuscan farm/winery was one of my favorites. All the travelers onboard were so nice. Food was excellent overall. I have several dietary restrictions which they accommodated without a glitch. We took the silver spirit package which was worth the cost to have many selections. Entertainment was fabulous. My favorite was Dancing Under The Stars, but everything we attended was excellent. It seemed that the band could play every genre possible. Now for the negative. My husband bought me a ring during a jewelers event. The paperwork identifies Harding Retail (main jeweler on cruise lines) as the seller. The problem is, I was not informed sufficiently about getting the VAT returned. This was over $1,000 US. Harding retail will not pick up the phone or return a call to see how a return of the VAT can be made. Viking has indicated that this is not something they could help with, and I find this disturbing since the jeweler was allowed to operate on their ship. My husband and I had booked another trip with Viking, but we are having doubts about following through with this plan. I invite Harding Retail and/or Viking to respond and resolve this problem. I will gladly post a retraction if either finally solve the problem. Read Less

Had never been to most of the cities, had never cruised the Mediterranean or Adriatic. The brand new ship was marvelous in every way; great amenities, wonderful food, and friendly, helpful staff. Appreciated the changing menus, the locally sourced food items, and the variety of food offerings both in the main dining rooms and in the special restaurants. The on-board lectures and entertainment were top notch. The Port Talks were very helpful, as were the talks on European history. It was wonderful and special to have an astronomer on board and to hear his lectures as well. We appreciated the ship's small collection of books, the comfortable lounge areas, and the swimming pools, spa and gift shops. Given the itinerary, we were prepared for and wanted to experience a "tasting menu" of ports. Even so, a bit more time in some of the ports would have been welcome. This was particularly true in Venice, where it took an hour to get to the morning tour start point, then we had an hour tour, then an hour to get back to the ship, a fifteen minute break, and then an hour ride back to the afternoon tour start point. There must be a way to let morning tourers stay downtown and meet up at a major city location to start the afternoon tours. Except for one location (Naples), the tour guides were engaged, friendly and knowledgeable. The tour guide who took our group to and through the Venice airport was particularly helpful, since that airport is an overcrowded, confusing, disaster. Read Less

Excellent service on a previous river cruise allowed us to look forward to this ocean cruise with much happy anticipation. Our pre-cruise stay in Madrid was wonderful. Our hotel was near the public transportation line and we had no trouble traveling throughout the beautiful city. We spent two days at the Prado and surrounding area, and never tired of walking around the town. The bullet train took us to Barcelona for our cruise, but the scheduling allowed us a second full day to explore the city and enjoy the food before we left port. We enjoyed the various dining options on the ship. The main restaurant offered table service for breakfast and dinner with a good variety of selections. It had open seating, and we never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to be seated. The World Cafe on an upper deck had a huge selection of choices in a buffet setting with both indoor and outdoor seating. In addition, there is a grill near the main pool and Mamsen's, offering some lighter fare in the comfortable Explorers Lounge. Finally, the ship offers to specialty restaurants for which reservations are required. Manfredi's offers Italian themed dishes; while The Chef's Table serves a fixed, five-course, "themed" menu that changes every couple of evenings. There is an included shorre excursion in each port, plus numeroud optional choices at additional cost. We found all the excursion guides to be extremely knowledgeable and engaging. Giulia's "Art and Architecture" tour in Florence was fascinating and fun. Swimming in the Mediterranean Sea while docked in Monaco was another highlight of our trip. Our post-cruise stay in Rome allowed us to experience the beautiful city and see Michelangelo's David. Traveling on the "Hop on-hop off" bus gave us the opportunity to explore many of the historic sites. We've already booked our next cruise with them for the Viking Homelands. Read Less

This was an excellent cruise line. One of the outstanding features is that it is really an adults only cruise. I have nothing against children but it's not relaxing when you have to listen to whiny children on a cruise you've worked so hard to be able to pay for. Time and place, etc. It was educational as well. Shore excursions offerings were spectacular and educational. The guides provided were excellent and knew their stuff. Another plus with Viking is that they don't try to sell you things while you are on your vacation. Have cruised Royal Caribbean's Alaska Cruise. While that cruise was enjoyable, they were always trying to sell us things like liquor packages, pictures, etc. They did not do this on Viking. Also big plus was the size of the ship. It was smaller and more intimate yet inclusive. Staff was excellent. Meals were very good. So nice to have a veranda in every stateroom. Would highly recommend Viking and will go again in two years on another cruise. Read Less

First, we, like many others on the ship, did not realize that the itinerary could be extended to 14 days and we disembarked at Civitavecchia. The embarkation in Barcelona was somehow affected by the local taxi strike, causing us to sit on a bus (thankfully, air-conditioned) in the port for an hour rather than a lounge at the World Trade Center. Because the Viking Gaudi tour was already sold out, we booked a tour from Viatours, which we had to meet at Park Guell. Since the taxis still were not running, we were forced to use the metro & walk uphill to the park in the 90+ temperatures. However, Sagrada Familia was worth it! The other shore excursions were a mix of the free ones included by Viking & ones we purchased from Viking prior to the trip. In looking at similar tours offered by Norwegian, we noted that the Viking was significantly cheaper for the same excursion. Having taken the Norwegian cruise in the Hawaiian Islands last year, we noticed how many things for which Norwegian charged and Viking did not. As a person who drinks a lot of water, I was happy to find this was free; Norwegian charged $40 for a case of water on that cruise! We did not buy the upgraded drink package but were quite happy with the quality of the wines with lunch & dinner which followed the countries where we docked. Refills were offered in the dining venues. Drinks in the bar areas were an additional, but not unreasonable, charge. I was surprised that another reviewer criticized the food. I never encountered anything that I felt was over-salted, & I tend to under-salt our food at home as my husband has blood pressure issues. While getting into the 2 premium (but free) venues was not easy, we dined once in both. The Chef's Table was particularly elegant, with wine pairings for each course from the standard pours. One night when we could not get into The Chef's Table, we had to settle for Beef Wellington at the World Cafe! There was an additional buffet on the open deck area of the World Cafe/Aquavit Bar where local specialties were grilled to order. In all, we felt the quality and variety food was outstanding. Service was above average, and we certainly did not encounter anyone with an attitude. Having a free launderette on each cabin deck was an added perk. Soap was automatically supplied at the push of a button. Our biggest regret is that we did not make an appointment for one of the planetarium shows. We enjoyed the deck party and movies in the pool area. Regarding the pools, the depth was not graduated & more than 5' deep in the main pool, more than I prefer. However, we had plenty of other things to do since there were no days when we were not in a port. Read Less

No “Vegas type “ atmosphere. Just clean well thought out architecture. The service on Viking is outstanding. Cruise staff remembered my name every time and also remembered my drink order. The buffet was unlike any that I have encountered before. Clean presentation, portions that were realistic & service above reproach. The dinning room was also fabulous. The attention to detail was very apparent. The staff made you feel very welcomed. I have to say one of the highlights was the spa area. I was so unique & inviting. Many cruises just get you into this area to upsell their products. Not Viking, they really want you to enjoy their unique area..the snow room... fantastic! Our cabin staff was so attentive. Orion was immaculate, a new ship and the crew was together just two months prior to our sailing; so in essence, everyone was "new" onboard. In true Viking fashion, everything went very smoothly (for us). We essentially sailed what's now called Mediterranean Odyssey (Barcelona to Venice). Our cruise was somehow overbooked, so the ship seemed more crowded than usual, full capacity I'm sure. (We've cruised with Viking several times, both River and Ocean.) Nonetheless, they asked for daily real-time feedbacks and seemed to make adjustments along the way. Overall, the trip was very enjoyable. Unfortunately, just about every port we went to was extremely hot. The walking tours would have been wonderful strolls otherwise. Nevertheless, we saw and learned so much. The trip gave us what we wanted: an overview of the land for future visits. Things that were unexpectedly outstanding: the cruise director and the entertainment. The cruise director was very personable and talented. He also mixed with the crowd. We found the singing/dancing by the four young people at the theater totally amazing. When not performing, they greeted us at the theater doors, and impressed us as ordinary people, all from the UK. When on stage, however, they transformed into professional performers who sang ABBA, Beatles, and Broadway songs. Their choreography was excellent. I was transported back to the 60s/70s. Parts of the Broadway songs even brought tears to my eyes--just wonderful performance. Read Less

We selected this ship and its itinerary as we wanted to visit this part of the world and this cruise fit our schedule. I particularly wanted to see Barcelona and return to Monte Carlo. This brand new ship, the Viking Orion, was beautiful. I loved the design and openness of the ship and the various touches of technology. Food was first rate, and all of the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. My only complaint was that the entertainment, particularly the musicians, were not of the quality that I have come to expect on most ships. Given the competitive nature of auditioning to be selected as a cruise ship musician, I am surprised that they were not more skilled. It would also have been nice if there were more options on board the ship when we were "at sea". Shore excursions were wonderful, and it was a real treat to have WIFI, wine, shore excursions, etc. part of an all-inclusive fare. This is extremely enticing! All in all, a wonderful experience! Viking was our first and only choice for an ocean cruise. The Viking Orion is a smaller ship with only 930 passengers (a huge selling point for us). We did a 15 Day Grand European river cruise two years prior so we knew what level of service to expect. They did not disappoint! First class again in every way! We were welcomed at the Barcelona World Trade Centre by the Viking staff with smiles and cold bottled water. Viking is extremely organized and buttoned down. Check in was as smooth as silk. Our stateroom was not available until 2:00 p.m. so we were told to make our way to The World Cafe and lunch would be available. We were onboard the ship within minutes and welcomed with cold clothes and champagne. Nice touch! As an aside, this cruise was in recognition of our wedding anniversary. Viking delivered a bottle of chilled champagne and beautiful cake after we arrived in our stateroom. Both were very tasty! The ship overall is very beautiful and modern. You really feel like you are on a luxury cruise ship. Our stateroom was perfect for the two of us. It was extremely clean. The bathroom was a good size, lots of room in the shower. Plenty of storage space, heated floors, quality toiletries/towels, etc. all replenished daily. They provide luxury robes and slippers. The bed was super comfortable. I'm still trying to figure out how there wasn't one hint of a wrinkle in a pillow case or the duvet cover after they made up our room! There is plenty of closet and drawer space. We asked for extra hangers which were delivered within minutes. An added touch was having daily information about the cruise and ports of call on the stateroom television. Restaurant menus were updated daily so we could decide beforehand where we wanted to go for dinner. If we missed the evening talk about our next port of call, we could watch it later that evening or the following morning. You could also view the status of your account on board. There were several dining options available. Food selections at the specialty restaurants were plentiful. The Chef's Table was gourmet delicious! There were many choices offered from the buffet restaurant food stations and the Aquavit Terrace daily. Room service was always available. We had no complaints about any of the food offerings. Quantity, quality and presentation were outstanding! Especially the non-stop stop king crab legs offered nightly. They were a hit! Bar service was excellent. The bar tenders/servers were all very friendly and interesting to talk to. We purchased the Silver Spirits beverage package and enjoyed top shelf liquors and a great selection of wines. We did not use the swimming pools, spa or fitness centre however we did tour the spa. It's equipped with a snow room! The sports deck had mini-golf. A good selection of excursions were offered at each port of call; some included in the cruise and some not included. We did daily excursions at each port and stayed on land as long as we could exploring. All our tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable and some with a good sense of humor. The only excursion we were disappointed in was the visit to the village of Grimaud, France. With the time we had available, we saw mostly big yachts and villas. Time could have been better spent in St. Tropez. Viking is extremely organized in everything they do. Especially getting guests efficiently off (and back on) the ship and loaded on to awaiting buses. We were provided bottled water and wished a good day by senior Viking staff when disembarking at each port. When returning to the ship after each excursion we had to go through a security check (which is done efficiently). Cold clothes were handed out arriving back on board the ship. On our final day in Livorno port before heading to our final disembarkation destination, Civitavecchia (Rome), we were greeted back at the ship after touring all day with a red carpet, cold champagne and all the ship staff welcoming us back. They were all lined up dancing to the music was playing outside. Another nice touch! Entertainment on the ship was fine for us. After full days of touring in the heat, night life wasn't that important to us. If you're expecting to party at the all-night disco, or play the slots, this is likely not the cruise for you. No disco or casino. Entertainment was offered most nights by the Viking Singers in the Star Theatre as well as guest entertainers. The Viking Band played in the Torshavn Lounge for those that wanted to dance. There were movie nights and dancing under the stars pool side on select nights. The resident pianist, guitarist and classical duo performed nightly in the Atrium. We watched one 3D movie in the Explorers' Dome. It was visually amazing! There are only 26 seats available and you need to reserve at guest services. It does not cost anything. An added perk on the ship was the self-serve laundry/ironing facilities on each level. Viking may seem a bit on the pricey side but they are definitely worth the money. We would recommend Viking to anyone and will be looking at future travels with Viking again. Staff, service, dining, excursions, and overall experience on this cruise ... all first class! Read Less

All of the staff we encountered were extremely professional. We enjoyed all of our excursions, some included and others we selected based on preference. My son’s favorites were Monte Carlo, Lucca and Vinci. I also enjoyed visiting the gallery in St. Tropez. It was incredibly hot and crowded in Florence and I needed to return to the ship a little earlier than the end of the tour which was accomodated. We treated ourselves to massages and spent half a day in the spa including the snow room! Turned out July was a wonderful time to be in the Mediterranean. It was just beautiful. The ship had only been on a couple of cruises since being launched so it seemed brand new. We had been on the Star and loved it but this ship was even better. The technology especially has improved. Our favorite port was St. Tropez and our favorite excursion was there to Port Grimaud. While many in our group had visited most of the ports previously, we all wanted to visit the scheduled ports. We greatly enjoyed out pre-cruise in Madrid. The change of itinerary, costing us a night in Barcelona, was disappointing, though Sète was lovely. The other ports were fantastic and the excursions, both included and optional, were well run and educational. We were a bit disappointed in the wine tasting at Valmagne Abbey (extremely limited amounts of wine to taste and quite discourteous servers), but the tour guides were all excellent and the locations provided great adventures and experiences for all of us. Toilets on all tour buses, regardless of length of tour, would be an improvement. One of the best things about the cruise was having an astronomer in residence; his expertise during star and planet gazing and when the international Space Station passed over the Orion was an amazing experience! We utilized and loved the included areas of the spa, including the cold room. The food and included wine was great and meals were leisurely, well served affairs. Both the spa and meal service are areas where Viking's luxury treatment of guests shines. The on board entertainment was good to adequate and provides Viking with an area in which to improve. We are looking forward to our next cruise with Viking. Our only real complaint stemmed from the flight arrangements going home. Viking needs to find a much better way to do flight arrangements, one that gives Viking far more control and the ability to provide much better customer service for dealing with problems and issues. We chose the cruise because we enjoyed the river cruise we took in May of 2017. We also wanted to compare the ocean cruise to Princess ocean cruises. We liked the smaller ship, loved the free laundry. The entertainment was good for a smaller ship. Princess entertainment is extravagant in comparison, due to the fact that they have been around longer and are experienced in it. Their sets are well designed and we enjoyed meeting the actors, seeing their rooms and finding out about what it takes to be an entertainer on Princess. We loved eating at the Chef's Table, Asian Panorama. We enjoyed the Winter Garden, the spa with the Snow Gratto. The free shore excursions are all walking tours of whatever port we are in. Those that we booked I found interesting. If you are in the last group that gets to book excursions you may find the best times sold out. The paid excursions are excellent especially if you like exploring the food and wines of the regions visited. Many excursions focus on these aspects of culture. On board activities and entertainment was good and varied with something for everyone. We chose this cruise for our honeymoon and could not be happier with our choice!!! The ship was absolutely breathtaking, everything we could imagine was available and then some (ex. The bathrooms in the staterooms have heated floors and mirrors...). The amenities on board kept us entertained an interested, and we didn't even get to try everything. The dining was fantastic, specially restaurants were amazing and even the casual buffet style dining was better than we've ever experienced anywhere. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful at all times, they always had a smile and were more than happy to help with anything we could ever want. The shore excursions were absolutely delightful and so very interesting!! Every one of them was inspiring and exciting. The tour guide companies Viking contracted with were wonderful, they were not difficult to understand, the headsets made it so nobody had to yell or strain to hear, and the guides always had more information than you could imagine. We haven't stopped talking about our cruise since we returned home and have even made purchases of household items that are similar to on the ship so we can pretend we're still there. Read Less

I enjoy Viking cruises because it includes the most stops. I specifically enjoyed the having a few days in Barcelona before beginning the cruise. I enjoyed every stop it's hard to pick one.One of my favorite stops was Sete (Montepiller) France. The port was unique because of all the flowers around the water ways. I also enjoyed the Van Gough excursion was very interesting. Our lunch at I believe Les Baux-Provence was very nice. Every excursion had lots of variety. Eze, Nice, and Monte Carlo were unbelievable. Our day in Tuscany was wonderful with a stop at a farm house and winery "Fattoria- San Donato". I enjoyed trying the various pasta dishes, roasted vegetables, cheese and especially the wine. Seeing the "Leaning Tower" for the first time was truly amazing. The ship and service were great. We had dinner at the various restaurants. All were very good. The food at the Italian restaurant was delicious. It was a great cruise! Read Less

This was our first cruise. We fell in love with the Viking experience and have already spoken of future locations to look into..... All around fantastic experience, couldn't imagine cruising with another line. We chose the Junior Veranda Suite and could not have been happier. Very roomy and the bathroom was well appointed and had more than enough room. Bed and furniture was quite comfortable and lines were very nice. Our cabin was cleaned twice a day and the free laundry service was fantastic. The dining was superb. From the World Cafe to The Restaurant you will not have a bad meal. We did dine at the Chef's Table and Manfredo's multiple times and our favorite was Manfredo. Food was excellent and authentic Italian. Simply loved the bread and olive oil paired with the hard parmeigiano reggiano cheese. Crew was personable, professional and above all, friendly! A wonderful experience from start to finish and I cant wait to book another trip!!! Read Less

First time sailing with Viking and we were not disappointed. The ship was brand new and luxurious. The food at all restaurants was top notch. Manafred’s was our favorite and we dined there twice. Service was over the top. Most tours were very good but some (Canne) included a very long bus ride - at least 2-1/2 hours each way - which was too much time on a bus for us. Room was spacious, well appointed and very clean. Therapy pool and snow room were fun and unique experience. Gym was clean and spacious and and had plenty of equipment. We traveled with a group so we did not have much time to check out their evening entertainment. Embarkation process went very smoothly and we were on ship within minutes of arriving at dock. I would not hesitate recommending Viking! You will not be disappointed. Was a trip of a lifetime. Read Less

We really liked our Viking River Cruise and were excited to be one of the first to sail on the Viking Orion Ship! When we saw the western Mediterranean, we knew that was the one to take. We loved the fact that this is a smaller vessel! Hate those giant “floating cities”!!! And because of this fact, we were able to port in smaller places and take advantage of some very quaint and unique cities, towns, and sites Sete, Marseilles etc...! Loved the towns of Nice, Eze, Cassis and the Calanques, and spent two days in the the port of Livorno so extra time in Florence and Pisa. This Ship was absolutely Amazing!!!! Loved the spa area...giant spa, Steam room, saunas, cold pool, heated lounge chairs and especially the snow grotto!! Also the outdoor pool features a retractable roof so it was always available to hang out and relax. They also had more private lounging/cabana areas that over looked the Sea. The Orion also features an Astrological and Norse themes, events, decor....featuring a Planetarium! So were beautiful and fun! Everything is State-of-the-art....down to several Large interactive touch screen tables! Read Less
