We chose the haven spa suite category because we wanted to have memorable 17th year anniversary and since this would have been our 3rd time cruising this same itinerary, we wanted just to relax & use the spa. Instead our room flooded each time we showered because the ship would tilt towards our side of the ship when it is docked or when it is sailing. The shower's design has the drainage in a higher slope than the shower's door. The concierge's immediate recommendation is to put towels on the floor each time we showered.until their crew engineers are available to analyze the problem. After a day of no resolution, we brought this up to the cruise general manager. He schedule 3 crews members to come & looked inside our suite and determine a quick fix. He ensured the room would be sanitized & cleaned from the leftover scum from the shower. Also on the 2 days we wanted to sleep in, our butler would knock on our door & will call repeatedly til we answered - the 1st time he inadvertently read the do not disturb sign as make our room to be ready (similar color code) and the second time was he had misread delivering breakfast time. Finally, on the 5th day of the cruise, as we suggested (I am a civil engineer), they installed a higher barrier on the shower door so water would not drain out onto the floors . So we were finally able to enjoy our room with privacy for the remaining one and 1/2 days of our cruise - so we thought! They inadvertently did not inform everyone that they were going to shut down the water in the room & you cannot flush the toilet since work will be done between midnight & 6 am throughout the ship. We only found out about it because we called after getting back from the casino at 2 am. Yup, we flew in from California (14 hour flight) to spent thousands of dollars on the cruise to only enjoy our suite for 1 day. The reason we book suites or haven on our previous cruises was to enjoy the amenities - on this cruise we did not get what we paid for. The positive part of this cruise is we enjoyed the great service of the waitress & waiter (they work 7 days a week for 12 to 13 hours daily) and despite not having the usage of our suite, we enjoyed each others company. Hopefully our cruise to Singapore next month would be better. Read Less

I chose this holiday to take all my family who live in different parts of Europe on a cruise where we could all be together. The poor things outweighed the pluses , I would never do it again. The pools were inadequate, too many people using a small area . many of the guests refused to let their children use them. This should have been the centre stage for the trip but it wasn't comfortable. Always packed and difficult to find chairs. No crew bothering to see who were not using the beds occupied all day with towels which weren't used. The cabins were Ok but that's all. Food was fine, no complaints. Embarkation and disembarkation excellent. Entertainment good. The problem with this ship is that the on deck facilities aren't sufficient for the number of passengers. Had that been better then it would have made a huge difference to our holiday. We also had some issues relating to NCL general terms and conditions and found their later dealing with our complaint unsatisfactory. There were always long queues at guest relations desk so if you needed the simplest of requests or answers you had to expect a long wait. NCL should invest in better on deck facilities and give their Guest relations teams both on board and in London better training in customer service. Our children enjoyed the rides and there were many good things about the ship. yet as I stated the bad outweighed the good. Irregular Kev Read Less

Sailed with husband, daughter and 2 friends. This was our 55th cruise. 6th cruise line, returned from 04/04/2019 sailing on MSC .meraveglia The ship is lovely, staff was wonderful, especially Jonathan, my room steward. ( Balcony Stateroom #13150, Aurea experience), was kept perfect at all times. Jonathan was kind, courteous and one of the best I’ve ever had. The room needs more storage. Small closet with too few shelves with only 2 drawers is not sufficient. The spa was amazing and “Cherry’ gave me the best message ever. She was excellent Spa was the best I’ve experienced at sea. Very very busy on sea day. Dining room sat 5 of us at table of 4. Woman who does seating in Panorama dining room was downright rude when we requested a different table. My daughter was placed in the aisle with metal bar in front of her making it difficult to actually sit at the table. No napkin or flat wear unless requested. My daughter, a professional woman, was mortified. As I was for her. Food in dining room, Panorama, was ok..not good. Variety was small...do not even think to order Mahi mahi . The staff is hard working. Courteous. The real problem, which absolutely ruined our cruise was the tour “Rome on your own”. We waited a lifetime to see Rome, and did not. 4 of us are 65+ With health, mobility and vision problems. Don’t let the term “easy’ Fool anyone, disgraceful. There was a marathon the day of our arrival to Rome. The entire city was affected and virtually closed down. The tour company was totally unprepared, causing the ride to last twice as long just to try to find parking. When the bus finally parked, we were at first, led in the wrong direction. Walking up hills and many steps. The tour guides finally realized an error in direction ,so we retraced our steps. We never got to see Rome s sights as we could not walk further than the Spanish steps. The reason for our trip was primarily visiting Rome. I cannot tell you the disappointment. We should have been told we could not get buses or taxis into the center of Rome because of the marathon. We should have been given a choice of cancelling. The guides SHOULD HAVE PREPARED. Till we walked back to bus stop, we had hobbled nearly 5 miles. Causing problems for the remaining trip. I will not go back on the MERAVEGLIA again Read Less

Been on of of MSC ships before back in 2012. We had a great time there This nov cruise from Barcelona it was not was we expected. The ship is very nice we have no complains about the design at all. But very little games or quiz. Missed that a lot! We went to one show,,but it was to loud for us,,its not the ships fault. The food was not good att all. Mostly ate in the buffet, once in the main dining room. We were thinking of do the specially restaurant but found it to price. The cabin was nice..the bathroom a bit small. Ports..well we hade been to all the ports before, but liked it. Mostly we did our own tour. At Malta we joined an organize tour,,guided through the old town in Malta and also the world heritage Hagar aim Also several of the staff was very unpolite. We ended up not paying the tips, because they didn deserve it!! I had no problems not being charge Just went to the guy who worked with it. Apparently he said he understood me!! So before this cruise I hade already book an other in jan 12 from Miami with MSC Seaside. I try not to feel negativ, but.. We chose the cruise for the destinations which we had not been to previously. The embarkation in Valencia was a fiasco and no assistance when entering the ship from Costa staff. Beautiful ship, we had a classic inside cabin which was fine. We did notice that the carpet wasn’t too clean but other than that okay. Went to buffet to get a bite to eat and drink!!! No way, it is only open for short periods of time. Luggage did not arrive in time for us to change for dinner so forced to go back to buffet when it had opened. Wish we had not as food was very unappetising and was the same repeated every day for the whole cruise. Breakfast was a case of a free for all... never any clean bowls or cutlery not to mention a clean table. We gave up some days and went ashore to eat. Dining room okay but not a lot of choice and very rude waiter. Had to pay extra if you wanted a pizza or burger, the two most inexpensive foods!!! Entertainment was just okay and the general service on the ship is poor. All the destinations were good, we did not use ships excursions as they are too expensive. Was very surprised to find that Costa have now made the service charge (tips) 10 euros each per day mandatory. When I questioned this at Reception I was told by a very officious man that I had signed for terms and conditions and so must pay them. I would not mind if the service was good, but it is not so 200 euros for bad service!!! This just cannot be right. We have cruised now for 15 years sometimes twice a year and never have had such a negative feeling about a cruise. Apart from the destinations and the ship is beautiful there was nothing else to praise. It is said that it is relatively easy to get new business but very hard to keep it. Costa don’t seem to realise this, they certainly lost us. Read Less

The food is uninspired. With a small number of offerings at the Horizon Buffet that changed only slightly from day to day. Food from venue to venue tasted pretty much the same. Except for one dinner at the Crab Shack. That was marvelous. And one dinner at Sabatini's. Sabatini's was excellent with superb attention and care from the waiter. The Salty Dog... pass on that. The worst hamburger at sea. Ditto with the pizza. And the coffee? You could see through it most days. Sat down on a chair in Michelangelos dining room, the first night, which immediately broke. The ship overall, leans to the opulent. But the ship feels cramped, and closed in. To gain access to the outer decks was often a chicane of elevators, hallways and stairs. More so, than any other ship we have cruised on. The staff, mostly, appeared robotic. Not that there weren't clear exceptions to this. Our cabin Steward was superb with an engaging personality. A couple of specialty dining occasions offered excellent table service. One in particular at Sabatini's was the epitome of professional, and attentive waiting. We also received timely assistance from one of the officers and plenty of help with the bags on and off the boat.. Music in the atrium was too loud and encouraged us to avoid that section of the ship. Forget about the internet. IMPOSSIBLY slow. Click...wait 10 seconds, Click....wait 10 more seconds. AND EXPENSIVE. Strangely, a few days after our great experience with a waiter in Sabatini's, I found that waiter in regular Princess blue and khaki, busing tables at the pool. The shore excursions were nothing to rave about. Mostly, just ok. But, one excursion at Kotor completely fell apart. The excursion guide lost control of the tour. Leaving two tourists behind at the end of the first half of the tour. Half the tourists went ahead of the guide, while others were at public washrooms, after the guide took us to a public washroom that was closed, and she had to backtrack to another washroom that we had past on our way. She didn't appear to know the history of the port that well. Eventually, we bailed and went back to the bus to await the return of the tourists. Princess deserves credit for offering credit for a significant portion of this tour. The tour to the statue of David in Florence went off as planned and access to the museum was reasonably quick. In spite of it all, we made it a great time. Read Less

Went to find some April sunshine. Good points first: Never found the ship overcrowded even though almost 4000 passengers on board. Plenty of sunbeds and comfortable beds in the cabin. Bad Points: VAT on drinks!!. Who are they paying VAT too in the middle of the Med??. Excursions are extortionately priced and much easier to make your own way around. Food in main restaurant is mediocre to average at best with not much choice. If you wish to dine in the 555 steakhouse it is an extra $35 per head, if you wish to dine in the Tepanyaki, Asian fusion, Pig roast or any feature restaurant it is another $20 or $25 extra.. If you have a drink brought to your table you have to pay VAT and service charge. Wine in main restaurant advertised for $38 actually cost more than $47 with added VAT and service charge. How many restaurants charge you to bring wine to a table??. Carnival constantly push bingo sales and so called deals in the casino, there are numerous photographers around the main decks pushing you to have photo's taken at silly prices. Main theatre is on 2 levels, DO NOT choose upper level as you will see very little. I have done many cruises and will never use Carnival again. Only choose them if you wish to offload a lot of money!!! Read Less

We chose this cruise for the inaugural voyage and mediterranean itinerary. Pros: - Excellent Staff - although VERY SHORT HANDED - Cove Balcony Rooms EXCELLENT - Debarkation was easy - Veterns Gathering was EXCELLENT - Carnival excels at that Cons: - Boarding Ship in Barcelona - VERY UN-ORGANIZED - especially baggage - VERY POOR Food in Dining Room (Cold, Burnt, Tasteless) on multiple occasions - Poor choice of entertainment - Theater was WAY TOO SMALL!! - Poor organization and planning of Shore Excursions. Poor meeting place - many individuals missed their tours. - Inferior shore excursion buses: NOT SAFE - LIDO DECK - Total CHAOS - Understaffed, unsanitary and overall VERY VERY Disorganized. - Hibachi Grill Restaurant was too small - Diamond luncheon with the captain was a little disappointing - food was not up to standard - Diamond/Platinium party was poorly planned - over crowded Overall - this was the WORST CRUISE we have ever been on with carnival!! We are ambassadors for carnival and we are having second thoughts! We have been cruising with carnival for many years and are utterly disappointed with this cruise!! Read Less

this was our first cruise. My wife's ambition to cruise the Med. Visions of good food, good service and interesting places to visit, the main reason for chosen this particular cruise was its ports of call. Unfortunately it wasn't as we had hoped. Dumped at the harbour side with our luggage, ignored by some attendants wearing high vis jackets and expected to fathom out the boarding procedures. when we were acknowledged it was a curt' go over there. ' .having left home at 2.30 am arriving at Barcelona port at 10 and not expected to board ship until 3 it was not a god first impression. Obtaining the cabin key was another farce. it would have made more sense to have explained that the key, along with the luggage would be in the allocated cabin which would be unlocked. The cabin was clean and adequate but the wind noise when at sea and the drone of the engines was nearly un-acceptable. the ship was clean and tidy, well furnished if perhaps a little dated. The staff were friendly and some very helpful. The items to purchase on board, drinks, water and excursions ( if you hadn't purchased in advance) were very expensive. The self service cafeteria was like feeding time on the farm with everyone pushing and shoving and devouring as much as they could get there hands on. not like the vision of civilised dining we had anticipated. the food was bland and tasteless and a bit monotonousness. the allocated evening restaurant served minute portions of similar quality. Not to be recommended is the Chinese, Japanese restaurant that was available for an extra charge, i can say it must rate as one of the worst i have ever eaten in and is an embarrassment to the nations it is meant to represent. avoid at all costs. now the good points. The salad bar and fruit bar were both excellent. the evening entertainment was superb, a pleasure to watch and the fact we had pre-purchased a drinks package allowed us to sample different cocktails.. sorry but that's it . The daily itinerary, along with suggested evening dress code was a good idea, telling us times of various activities and also which musician was in which bar. its a pity that most people chose to ignore it, unless jeans, trainers and open neck shirts are classified as evening dress for men . ! ! ! we were charged a charitable donation to our on-board account, another payment they think there gusts should make . this seems to be an automatic, not notified charge that the inexperienced guest need to be aware of. our overall opinion of this cruise line is, that it wants to extract as much money as possible from its guests and give as little in return as possible. We took a Canary Island cruise on Norwegian Spirit (NCL Cruise Lines) late February 2018 and want to share our experiences with anyone who is thinking of booking a cruise with this organisation which cares little about its customers but does care about making as much money as possible from them. My main headline is that if you wish to be an independent traveller (ie you want to explore the ports of call mainly by yourselves and not on very expensive ship-run excursions) then this Cruise line is definitely not for you. In fact, they actively discourage those options for travel which don’t include them making a profit from it. Now for the pros and cons which relate to our experiences onboard ship compared with all other cruise lines I have sailed with. Overall the majority of customer-facing staff (except for all those behind the Reception Desks - who need replacing or retraining because they were very unhelpful) gave punctual service with a smile with the odd hiccup (amusing in hindsight) and they met my expectations. Also, the food in the main restaurants and buffet areas was generally very good despite it getting a little boring towards the end of the ten day cruise. The nightly entertainment was reasonably good on some days to downright spectacular on others. The daytime and early evening entertainment was puerile and juvenile in nature except for the bands with music and songs and the odd trivia quiz. However, there were a number of things which disappointed us, each by itself trivial in nature but collectively made us decide never again to use this Cruise Line because it fell way below our expectations. The transfer between airport and ship was diabolical. Despite being told by our meeter-and-greeter that there were regular shuttle buses to the ship and the next one was in 15 minutes it was well over an hour of standing around (seats were very limited) before she decided that two people she was waiting for were not going to turn up and only then did we leave the airport. Consequently, when we did arrive at the embarkation desks the queues were long and the scene chaotic because the staff wanted a break for their lunch. We were informed for the first time at the embarkation desk that the ship was not sailing to the Canary Isles as planned but was going around the Western Mediterranean instead because of heavy seas in the Atlantic. Although disappointing for us we fully understood the decision taken and accepted our fate. What was not acceptable is that prior warning was not given because that would have allowed us to do some quick research on each of the new destinations prior to travelling and change our detailed plans. It was very difficult to rearrange our plans on the ship because the Reception Staff (again long queues meant half hour waits) absolutely refused to give out maps, or any other information, on the new ports we were visiting on the basis that “it would breach copyright laws”. This was incorrect since we found out later that one way to get these maps was to pay an extortionate fare for their shuttle bus on which maps were handed out freely. Clearly, this must have been a policy decision by the Cruise Line to encourage people to use their expensive shuttle services or go on their excursions instead. This policy was taken to extremes by not providing free travellers with any information on the free shuttles that were available and once we stepped foot off the ship there were no signs at all of where to go next. “Follow the herd” was the general rule. To combat this we would go up to the top deck each morning and survey the port area and the town looking for distinguishing features (immigration posts, port entries, shuttle bus stops, cathedrals, castles, etc) and then get off the ship. Restaurant availability boards around the ship were inconsistent. The Shogun restaurant was shown daily to be available at most times but on enquiry we found that it was fully booked the day we wanted (and every other day except the very last night, for that matter!). The drinks packages bought on board were extremely expensive as was pay-as-you go drinks. Also, we found out from all-inclusive customers (drink, tax, gratuities all included in the cost of the cruise), who thought that their bar bill would come to zero, were having gratuities and tax (about 20%) added to their invoices at the end of the cruise. The final nail in the Norwegian Spirit coffin came on disembarkation at 0845 on the final day when our flight from the airport (20 minutes away) was at 1800. Despite repeated attempts to get the reception staff on the ship to give us another option from the one of being taken directly to the airport and then having to wait nine hours for our flight they had no answer. We found out much later that day that there was a facility (clearly nothing to do with Norwegian Cruise Lines) within a hundred yards of the luggage pick-up area at the disembarkation point which handled exactly the problem we were facing. That facility enabled the luggage to be locked up while the customers were shuttled to the centre of Barcelona where they spent a few hours sightseeing without the shackles of luggage and then shuttled back to be reunited with their luggage. I can never forgive NCL for its total incompetence in this matter and it simply confirmed that NCL doesn’t really want customers it just wants their money. Read Less

I chose this cruise to see the Mediterranean and explore cities. The weather was terrible. It snowed or rained almost everyday. The Barcelona tour was terrible. Couldn't understand the tour guide. Asked tour guide if we were going to sagra da familia and she replied yes we will see gothic church. In fact we were taken to a gothic church but it wasn't sagar da familia. Multiple people on the bus were disappointed. Pisa was nice but you have to walk at least a mile from the bus through town to the tourist site. On the walk back an older woman fell and hit her head and artificial hip. No ambulance was called. She had to keep walking. Others opted to take a taxi ride back to the bus for 10 euros. Another day I did the optional excursion to Florence. Again another long walk from bus to town. Again another older woman fell down on the walk back to the bus hurting her ankle. No ambulance called she had to keep walking assisted by strangers. The food was mediocre. The entertainment was nothing special. Wait times in the restaurant are unbearably long. Due to rough weather our day in st. Tropez was cancelled. We spent the day cruising. No extra activities on board to pass the time. Unless you are a "drinker" you will have at best an ok time. And I didn't pay over $3000 expecting to have an ok time. I have previously taken a river cruise--it was much better. But after this I have been put off from viking and travelling for a while. Also don't get me started on the flights they schedule for you. Layovers and bad times. They are not concerned with helping you unless you pay more money. Everything is a money grab. Getting home from Rome took over 24 hours. I could of had a direct flight in 10 hours. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the ports, timing, and cost. The ship was beautiful with wonderful appointments. Access to room was each with a touch or the room card. There was an "over 18 only" room on the 18th deck that offered a quiet place to be, with a panoramic view! Shore excursions were terrific. Getting on and off the ship was SO easy. There were 4 pools plus hot tubs. Regrettably, most were filled with children and therefore noisy. The cabin accommodations were mostly good: quiet room, good shower, great new mattress and pillows. The only place to sit was on a stool & storage was quite limited in the bedroom, bath, and closet. There were no coffee bars or small cafes. Hygiene was deplorable. We were traveling during the flu season and were astonished to see buffet had 2 entrances w/o hand washing accommodations. Main entrance had some sinks; but soap and paper towels were sometimes lacking (as well as warm water). No staff encouraged hand sanitation, either. Food was very disappointing. Variety was limited. Few meats offered. Portions in the restaurants were small and very limited in variety. I literally could not eat the prime rib (despite my excitement at seeing it on the menu), due to its saltiness. Fruit was not fresh. Pasta was available at lunch and dinner; but again, without meat or seafood in it. Oddly no cocktails were available in the restaurants, though wine was available for purchase. The layout of the buffet was not practical. Some areas were needlessly congested. Often, the display of food was not logical, such as finding salad items under "Ethnic Food" sign. Buffet never opened up all of the possible lines (4), so seating got congested. We had assigned dinner time & table, which limited our socializing. Service was not very accommodating. No service staff offered to assist with finding seating, refiling drinks, serving coffee with dinner, etc. When passing staff in walkways, passengers were expected to give way to staff. The ship had no band or orchestra. There were no "small venues" of comedians, live music, etc. Shops had limited items, too. Another consideration is that there were few passengers with English as their first language, which severely affected out ability to mix and socialize. Something to consider if you are not fluent in other languages (Italian, Spanish, Japanese, etc.) Read Less

We wanted to visit the Canarys and Funchal without packing and unpacking several times. We are three in the cabin - parents and a college student. I could not be more disappointed. We thought being aboard ship for Christmas and New Years would be festive and fun and it was nothing like that. I understand you must appeal to the older folks who take this cruise but from food to music and port call timeframes, everything that could go wrong went wrong. Port Calls: This captain wanted to save as much as possible when it comes to time in port - leaving us with little to none to really see the islands. We pulled in early enough - when nothing was open on the island, not even a coffee shop - and we'd leave often at 3:30 p.m.! With no shipboard entertainment to keep you busy, why would you want people on board? Just to buy expensive drinks I guess. All of the islands were nice enough - Maderia being teh best but Casablanca??? Don't even get off the ship. The ship is bad - Casablanca is worse! Entertainment: The band "Souled Out" was not bad. Their chemistry though is not there. Seems the lead guy can't stand the lead gal from where we were sitting. They do one hour sets then leave for an hour. There is NOTHING going on for that hour. A DJ doesn't spin any music to dance. The staff don't come and do something fun. Nothing. So let's say you are enjoying the music - then there's a huge break with nothing to do!! I really was stunned by this. I've cruised before and a lot can be forgiven when you have entertainment you enjoy. This was the most board I've ever been on a ship. The music was appealing to ballroom dancers and they danced. Taking the entire dance floor so none of us non professionals could get a spot. Fun to watch but maybe at 10 p.m. you'd switch to something people under 80 would enjoy as well. PS the older folks enjoyed the popular tunes as much as the old stuff so why not appeal to everyone?? Entertainment 2: The teenagers (under 18) get the nice front of the ship spot for a disco but I think there were maybe 20 of them total on the ship. Prime real estate for kids with nothing for any of the paying passengers between 18 and 75 years old. There is a second "disco" but they let karaoke have that spot until 11 p.m. every night then spin dance tunes after that. You have to pass through the smoke gauntlet from hell to get to this disco (the casino) to get there. On New Years Eve this was the only place that had any entertainment after 12:30 p.m. YES, they closed the Galaxy that seats a few hundred at 12:30 p.m. on NEW YEARS EVE!!! It was unbelievable. Entertainment 3: The shows were fine. The dance crew is great and the lead singers are very good. They had a British lady for a couple nights that was great as well. (Michele) The magician is awful and the music so loud during his performances that I'm sure the old folks just removed their hearing aids. They should let the singers and dancers own that place and get rid of all the rest of the glitz and glam. Everyone likes quality singing - show tunes etc. Entertainment Staff: Jacky and Eliose were great and you can see they are working hard against all odds (and their apparent boss Dave the Cruise Director) to help build an environment where people can have some fun. But they must figure a way to bring the entertainment to the people. This group needs an overhaul. $50 to play Bingo is just not reasonable when you only win $150 and you're nickled and died on every thing else. Ship Excursions: Don't do it!! Waste of money and they don't know what goes on on their own excursions. Whale watching we did with them and we asked if their was swimming off the boat (we'd read that in a review) but it's December so we asked. "NO, it's way too cold they won't do that." We sat for 45 minutes while everyone from the other cruise boats donned their suits and jumped into the waters of the Canary Islands. Not fun. Advice: get off the boat, walk a bit up the pier and get a cab driver who will take you all over the islands for about $100 and get you back on time. Totally worth it!! Food: The sushi was great but you were paying for it. The buffet, yuck except for breakfast. Hard to ruin breakfast I guess. Too salty, too mushy, again, food for 80 years olds I guess. Drinks: I get it, we need to pay for drinks and the inclusive plan was not worth it for us - we don't drink enough - so I pay $16.00 for a drink once you had the gratuity, ok, but at least learn how to make a drink!! Every bartender in that place needs retraining. The amount of sour mix used in every drink will give you indigestion. They can't even get a gin and tonic right. Awful. Rooms: It's an old ship so I was not expecting anything grand, and it was fine. Beds are a bit hard but service staff were a bright light in a ship that seemed like no one else enjoyed their jobs. Our cabin girl, Nina, was so nice and polite. We loved her and appreciated how hard she worked. Leading up to the cabins though, it smells - and bad. Also deck 6 is below the casino where people apparently move furniture all night long. Sleep was impossible on many nights. Smoking: This ship is in Europe where there are many smokers and this ship is all theirs. They own the outdoor areas beside the pools - seems like that would be ok but the glass windows keeps the smoke from dissipating and each day we much walk through the cloud of smoke from hell to get to dinner. The casino doors are left propped open so all the smoke from there pours into the hallways and the elevators where everyone must go to get to the bedroom floors is so smokey that people were fanning the smokey smell away. My allergies were going crazy and by the time we left the ship I swear I second hand smoked a pack a day. There needs to be a limit. They have every right to smoke, but the rest of us should have an area we can breathe fresh air and not on the top of the ship in 30 mile hour winds. You can see from this that the ship totally lacks everything you'd expect from a cruise. It's a very sad situation and we spent $5,000 to have one of the worst vacations we've ever had. Very poor food; especially Le Bistro specialty restaurant. It was very bland as was most of the activities and entertainment. Very little going on most of the time We are able to amuse ourselves, good thing. However, we can amuse ourselves at home and the food is better. This is our second time on the Spirit. The first time it was much better. So things seemed to have changed on board The places visited were OK. Enjoyed Funchal the most. Weather was OK. 360 degree wrap around promenade for walkers and we did like the size of the ship. It make it easier to meet people. Their anytime dinning worked well, they seem to have it down well. The ship was clean and the service was good. Our stateroom attendant was very good. I think we need to try another ship next time ( we are locked in to going with NCL again due to the credit/future cruise scheme). Read Less

Wanted to try a different cruise line so chose Costa, the ship was lovely and I can't fault the cabin or the public areas very regal and good quality finishes however our experience was somewhat coloured by the type of clientele the ship attracts, I can only compare to one of the hop on hop off buses which are plentiful in the ports we visited as the ship takes on and disembarks passengers at every port we called at so it seems there was always a complement of people walking around the ship with some form of luggage. The lido deck which offers a buffet for all mealtimes is fine if you can get close enough to get something and be warned if they are serving seafood be prepared for the frenzy that takes place by the Italian passengers who seem to want to feed the world with the amount they pile up on numerous plates. We resorted to the restaurant for our meals but apart from the evening meal when we had a reserved table the rest was hit and miss with over worked waiting staff trying their best to take and deliver orders for food and drink extending your time at table to sometimes a couple of hours. The cruise line offers most things at a price, we bought a drinks package that covered alcohol and coffees however did not include ice cream which my husband loves usually finishing his evening meal with some but this was not possible unless we paid extra. Pizza parlour was also an extra charge and not included on the menu. Excursions not cheap and it seemed a lot to pay for places like ancient monuments and churches so we opted for town visits, once again we had to pay for shuttle buses into town which were expensive in comparison to other cruise lines which normally offer these as standard and only in some cases charge a minimum fee. The only free shuttle buses was at Civitteccia put on by the port authority. The shows were mostly in Italian and geared toward the Italians even the compere introduced the acts in various languages before getting to an English version which seemed short in comparison to the others making us feel as though we were missing out. The ship attracted lots of families with young children who could often be found playing in the lifts unsupervised and causing havoc, we also noticed mid cruise we had what seemed like school parties with hoards of teenagers who were loud and boisterous and possibly just old enough to drink and smoke. On the plus side we had a great room steward Melvin who looked after the cabin and our waiter in the restaurant of an evening Ramesh who couldn't do enough for us and really made some of the cruise bearable, along with some lovely people sat at our table who we will stay in touch with. Our arrival at the port of Barcelona was much too early for the ship and although our luggage was checked in at 11am we had a 3 hour wait before being allowed to board and had to spend this in a large arrivals hall which fortunately had a café, coming home we disembarked at 9.30 and had to wait for our pick up for just over an hour with no seating and being moved to the outside of the building to wait in the cold. This of course was not down to Costa but the tour Company we had booked with which I shall not use again. Overall I would not recommend this cruise line to English paying passengers it seems a waste of good money especially when other cruise lines offer more competitive prices Read Less

Chose for itinerary and value. They say you either like or dislike the ship, we disliked. Embark was long, slow and no priority for Platinum guests. Because one in our party had a cane we were taken to other side for disabled line which took forever, only one agent. Disembark a nightmare, we were told by Lattitude staff we could get off anytime so we started at 7 and got off at noon. Misinformation everywhere. Missed flight had to pay out of pocket, insurance says its NCL problem. If you could fine a seat in a bar good luck and if there-s a waiter even better. Understaffed and over crowded, with a casino and smokers that runs almost entire length of ship with clubs and restaurants entry at same. Specialty restaurants continue to be very good. Entertainment very good, if you want to line up for hours. Room steward a gem. Service overall, rushed and in public areas almost non existent. Bottom line bigger ships a nightmare for us. Have already cancelled spring cruise and rebooked our fall cruise as well. Sorry NCL we have to go back to Celebrity. Read Less

Booked this cruise with friends that have cruised together for over 15 years. 2nd time on Freedom of the Sea, very disappointed at organization, reduction in service and offerings Really felt like they were trying to get the most out of you for the least amount of quality. Stewards and waiters were very good. Long lines for check in, asked for map of ship, no longer available, just a single sheet that you could barely read. Room was fine, as mentioned...before except: hard closing shower doors made it too small for large people, shower curtain would have been better. Shampoo in container stuck on wall that you would bang into. Control on desk to hear announcements was sporatic. Only two English news stations: BBC and CNN (repeated a lot) Went with 2 other couples that have cruised together for over 15 years and multiple cruises. Finally opened connecting balcony doors which was very nice and roomy. Room steward was very good except always had to ask for ice in the afternoon, only filled in the AM and needed ice for drinks before dinner. Dining room breakfast was either a buffet or you could order from a menu. Often, items on menu were unavailable (even though we arrived when it opened). Food limited but not that hot. FORGET THE WINJAMMER BUFFETT! If you went for lunch, at times there were not any tables. Food was poor, meat tough and various offerings scattered around. You had to walk around everything first and then decided. Sometimes carving steward was unavailable or did not have enough quantity for the long lines of people. Entertainment was very good, one or two shows were the best I have ever seen in over 40 cruises, however crowded and despite announcements people were holding up cameras to take videos. Not enforced. Excursions were OK however some too short or crowded to fully appreciate. Forget trip to Monserrat as you only had two hours, it was packed, and you could not even walk through the museum or take the tram as it was about two hour ride each way. Two tours I was on were very intense and required a lot of walking at a good rate. I was OK and expected it however the excursion staff should have enforced the requirements as several (my age) complained of the walking and effort, they should have been left back as they complained so much it affected the trip. Main dining room was very lovely and the waiters were excellent EXCEPT they have reduced the quality of the offering of the menu. If you wanted a better choice like the specialty restaurants, you had to pay. First time ever they did not offer surf and turf for any of the dinners and this is usually done on either one of the last two nights on other lines. One time we left the ship when two gangplanks were open for a tour. Came back hoping to get lunch and only one gangplank was open. The line to get in was the length of the ship. For the first time in a long time, I confronted security at the closed gangplank. He had to run inside to get permission to let me on that one. It makes no sense or concern for customers to stand out in line, in the hot sun, without someone correcting this with a simple solution. In summary, this is about the 10th large ship I have been on and I felt like the main objective was to milk as much out of you as possible while treating you like cattle. I would much rather pay a little more for a smaller ship with better attention to details. Cruising is no longer an experience that I started over 30 years ago and I have cruised at least once a year over that time, including Freedom 5 years ago and several other older RCs. Read Less

Although we had never cruised aboard such a large ship, we thought that the yacht club experience would give us the advantages of a tranquil haven as well as being able to enjoy some of the activities on board. We did like the yacht club facilities - spacious cabin and pleasant restaurant, lounge and pool deck (although the roof arrangement on the sun deck was rather odd in that it was alternately half open and half covered in glass panels). During several storms that we experienced there was also a lot of movement on deck 15 and very noticeable jerking movements which were very loud. The dress code was also somewhat bizarre in that basically you just ignored it if you chose to do so. I was in a long dress for one of the elegant nights but other people in the yacht club were dressed very casually. The high tech booking arrangements for shows were new to us - you could pre book for the theatre and gain early entry or not book and be admitted much later. On one occasion we had double checked with the concierge that we were indeed booked in, only to find that the hand held machine at the theatre did not have my booking and that my travelling companion had already seen the show before, which she clearly had not! We thought there was a poor selection of shops for such a large ship. The ship outside the yacht club was very noisy and overcrowded. The food in the yacht club was also very mediocre - we would have expected a much higher standard. We also had a very unsatisfactory response on board to a complaint concerning a shore excursion, which is on-going on our return. Read Less

We chose this cruise because in the brochure it looked very nice, with a large pool, and as it was our 25th anniversary we chose accommodation with a large balcony. The accommodation was quite nice with lots of cupboard space and although we asked for twin beds we had a large king size - the bathroom was very small and if you are a big person the shower would be impossible to fit into. The cabin steward was very good and could not do enough for us and kept the room very clean. We had very loud Americans on either side of our cabin and indeed most of the ship was accommodated with Americans who were quite loud and spoiled a lot of our evenings. If we had realised that it was the American kids holidays we would never have booked this time of year - although children under 12 were supposed to be supervised they were not! Most of the day entertainment was around the Antrum which was indoors and only consisted of learning a few dances, the Antrum was very good at night with piano players and singers. There was no sport challenges on deck that we could see which all the cruises that we have been on before have had. The swimming pool was "postage stamp size" very small containing salt water, loads of salt, but no signs to say do not open your eyes under water (many people had sore eyes after going in the pool). The indoor pool was small as well and again salt water with loads of people just standing around drinking - the amount of salt was keeping them upright.. The Windjammer restaurant was okay but, again, catered for the Americans hot dogs with beef being in the forefront (hamburgers, beef pie, joints of beef) and although we like beef it became too much. The food was plentiful but I wish they did not fry their vegetables! We paid to go to the 3 specialist restaurants and I would not advise the Asian - it was not nice, the Italian was fine and Chops was quite good. We found, 3 days before we had to disembark the sit down restaurant and the service and food was fab. We booked what we thought was one trip on board which we assumed was a courier trip - it turned out to be a hop on hop off bus - we were couriered to the bus then was left behind, we booked an independent company for other trips which were cheaper and pleasant, When we complained the customer service person was very rude and kept calling me madam emphasis on the 'M'. There were 2 other couples at reception saying that they were left behind on a different trip. I must say that the staff in the bars and restaurants were very polite, friendly and professional and our cabin steward Luis was the best we have ever had. We are not moaners and usually enjoy our cruise unfortunately we would not recommend this ship to anyone and certainly will not be going on it again. Read Less

We wanted a cruise that visited the ports of Venice, Dubrovnik and Barcelona and this one fit the bill. The ship was disappointing - we sailed on the Royal Princess last year and that was a far superior experience in every sense. The onboard experience was dull and uninspiring from the shops to the entertainment and the food. The excursions that we organized externally were great and the people that we met lovely. There was a norovirus outbreak and a lot of the passengers were affected and I was one of them. I felt that the ship gave lip service to the sanitization or perhaps it was just our sanitation crew.I had to ask them the wipe down the tables etc which was done half heartedly. I did not see the cleaning of the lifts and public stair rails and doors like the Princess staff did regularly. The food was boring with little change to the menu for the 24 days. I have never had chicken cooked so badly I tried it a few times but it was like chewing cardboard. We tried to have breakfast on the aft deck a few mornings but this was overtaken by smokers. We had issues with our cabin airconditioning 4 times and we even tried to sleep on the balcony to get away from the roaring noise of it. The toilet over flowed twice. The fridge did not work but they were insisting that it did - I had to ask them to bring a thermometer in to prove it to them that 55 degrees was not cool enough. The only saving grace with the ship was the staff they were lovely, courteous and friendly. We did receive 2 x $100 beverage vouchers which was a nice gesture but I would much rather have had peace and quiet and been able to sleep. Read Less

There was no tea or coffee available after breakfast for the remainder of the day accept on sea days when tea and coffee was available late afternoon. We had to purchase tea or coffee outside those times. When purchasing anything there was a 15% surcharge on top of the cost of the item. There was a 20 euro per person per day gratuity surcharge. No butter for bread freely available without asking for it. No free ice cream or pizza. We had to pay for those. Most cruise ships do not charge for this. There was a charge of 10 euros (nearly $20 au) for a lobster meal. The tail meat was about 2 inches long and was not nice. Most cruise lines do not charge for a lobster night. Staff were unfriendly and unhelpful to us.....especially at the service desk. Few television movies in English. One channel out of 65 was allocated to English speaking guests and they were only repeats of Happy Days and The Librarian. They showed an occasional English language movie. The rest were in German or Italian. Meals at the buffet were repeated often. They were always just lukewarm. We considered the few daily activities during sea days boring and not designed to engage English speaking passengers. Embarkation for excursions was very disorganised and resulted in long bottle neck wait times. There was a charge for the use of the sauna rooms. Most cruise ships do not charge for this. Read Less

It seemed good value for money but it cost us more in the long run. Customer care was poor. Small complaints were handled badly & then became Big complaints. I have discovered that while using the internet on my smart phone for very short times on or near the ship has coast £112 in roaming charges as the calls were through Norway! How would any one know this or is it just another ruse to get customers to sign up to their daily charges. the lack of information to non Italian speaking guests was significant. We were often waiting to hear the message in English but it didn't happen. Even the message to go to the theatre for disembarkation instructions was incoherent. I heard the words "instruction" & "disembarkation" & had to go to the unhelpful staff at the Reception desk to discover the whole message I would not recommend Costa. There are other lines providing the same cruise locations with much better staff & food at equally competitive prices. We did not like the compulsory charge for tips. A tip is given for good service something which we didn't have. Shame on Costa. Best part of the holiday was getting off the ship & enjoying the different locations. Read Less

Pre-trip - we had to ask for the itinerary about a week before we left and then received it in Spanish. When I asked for an English copy I was told there wasn't one yet a German lady on the coach had an English copy. The coach journey (from hell) - 10 hours cooped up listening to non-stop female German speakers; then 10 hours on the return - we should have been warned! Barcelona hotel and stay - good. Embarkation and disembarkation - well organised. Dining - abominable. In the dining room ALL hot food was cold, tasteless and unappetising. Self-service - a rat-race, cold, unappetising. Meat was cremated, served badly and inedible; limited range of fruit and salads, breakfast very hit and miss in terms of what you got. Entertainment - not worth watching. Good casino. The ship - the furniture in bar areas was dirty, the service variable. All-inclusive - what a joke! By far the majority of cocktails, cakes and ice creams were excluded and had to be paid for so it was a waste of money. The water in the room and mini-bar were not included. Service charge - MSC had the cheek to take 9 euros/each/day from our account without authorisation plus 15% service charge on drinks. We were offered a 'special' drink at dinner without being told we would have to pay for it. Staff with a few exceptions were not friendly, some were sullen others openly crying about their working conditions and attitude of other staff towards them. We waited 3 days to have the safe in the cabin opened after speaking to reception staff on five occasions. In summary, the noise, dirty conditions, screaming children, poor food and contracting bad cases of flu on board contributed to our decision never to cruise again, especially not with MSC. Read Less

Beware this is a rip off! We were looking so forward to our cruise. The embarkation went smoothly and the staff were fine. The ship is very Bolliwood and over the top, with glitz and glamour everywhere. Our cabin was adequate and thankfully we could control the air conditioner in it. You cannot drink the water and no water was provided. The ship was over heated, when getting into the lifts you felt like you were going into a furnace. The Italians and Spaniards were in such a rush to crush into the lifts that they didn't even let you get out first. On a number of occasions we were almost pushed over by rude guests, who gave no thought to anyone else. You have to pay for everything... including water, and pay a gratuity on absolutely everything as well. The food was very mediocre and most of it was cold. Very disappointing. It was most unpleasant having to listen to arguments between the staff while trying to enjoy your dinner. The breakfast buffet was like a cattle market free for all, with pushing in and general bad manners, with hard bread and rolls. Far too many people for such a small buffet. The other problem is that at meal times in the served restaurants, the waiters show you to a different table every night and take no regard as to the nationality of those that they seat or are seated, so it is likely that you will not be able to converse with anyone during the meal because of language difficulties, so instead of it being a pleasant experience it can be quite a drag. The entertainment was so over crowded that it was frustrating. The excursions were all very overpriced. Of the five outings that we had booked before leaving home, four of them were cancelled due to changes made by La Costa. The wifi was expensive, there were two English TV channels in the cabin (BBC news & Aljazeera) and very poor selection of movies to rent. When leaving the ship, they add on a hospitality charge of €10 per day per person and it is taken off your credit card without your permission. This mandatory service charge should be included in basic price to reflect the true cost.
