My sister and I have always wanted to cruise on a smaller ship and see the Mediterranean. We had been on a Viking River Cruise and discovered they had a new fleet of Ocean ships. The Viking Orion ship is beautiful with all of the elegant touched of Nordic style, art, and the space explorer theme was especially wonderful. Our local guides and thoughtful and friendly crew made us feel at home and provided enriching excursions at every port. Food choices were awesome, and the spa exceptional. I loved listening to piano and guitar music in the atrium and viewing art in the changing 3 story display. There were plenty of quiet places to relax and enjoy watching the scenery. We never felt crowded. The resident astronomer set up a powerful telescope on deck for us to view the rings of Saturn and moons of Jupiter, and we also spotted the international space station making its way across the sky. We also enjoyed two 3-d shows in the ship’s planetarium. A special highlight was watching the movie under the stars on the top deck that featured Florence the day before we set off for our post cruise Tuscany adventure. This was truly an adventure of a lifetime and worth every penny. We had to depart the day we arrived in Barcelona, but were able to arrange tickets to tour the Cathedral de Familia on our own, that had to be purchased months ahead of time. It was so beautiful and inspiring, and the first of many beautiful and amazing churches we would see at every port. Read Less

We chose the cruise because we enjoyed the river cruise we took in May of 2017. We also wanted to compare the ocean cruise to Princess ocean cruises. We liked the smaller ship, loved the free laundry. The entertainment was good for a smaller ship. Princess entertainment is extravagant in comparison, due to the fact that they have been around longer and are experienced in it. Their sets are well designed and we enjoyed meeting the actors, seeing their rooms and finding out about what it takes to be an entertainer on Princess. We loved eating at the Chef's Table, Asian Panorama. We enjoyed the Winter Garden, the spa with the Snow Gratto. We enjoyed dancing on the deck under the stars and at the night club, danced from 8:30 PM until it closed. It was such a wonderful experience that we booked another Viking Ocean cruise in May of 2019. Read Less

I had heard that Viking Cruises provided a higher cultural experience than other lines. I find that to be true. The music, lectures, art on board all lend to a extraordinary experience. The spa and fitness center are excellent. There is no casino, water slides, blaring music or kids. The amenities included (WiFi, shore excursions, drinks at dinner) are well worth it. The free shore excursions are all walking tours of whatever port we are in. Those that we booked I found interesting. If you are in the last group that gets to book excursions you may find the best times sold out. The paid excursions are excellent especially if you like exploring the food and wines of the regions visited. Many excursions focus on these aspects of culture. On board activities and entertainment was good and varied with something for everyone. It ranged from lectures about upcoming regions, an ABBA music revue, Jazz concert, various musicians playing each night. I have already booked another cruise for 2020. Read Less

The new Seaview ship looked irresistible on website. We had to do this one and we had no regrets. It was worth every cent !!! The food was outstanding quality and we were very happy with our waiters. Our Cabin was neat and well decorated. We always had clean towels and our cabin was serviced twice a day. When we entered our Cabin, it was always clean and fresh. Occasionally, we ordered room service breakfast and it was on time. We enjoyed the swimming pools as well as the outside jacuzzi's. Can do with a little bit more shady areas in the hot summer months. The main Restaurant staff was amazing. Bit slow on ordering drinks in the bu-vet areas. The entertainment staff was excellent and was very different. The embarkation and disembarkation went smoothly. We only went on two excursions an it was very interesting. We learn t a lot about the countries, the people and cultures. It was a great experience. Read Less

This was our first Cruise with Azamara. Unfortunately our expectations were not met. We knew that the “Quest” was an older ship but did expect that the service, food etc. would compensate for that. The cabin - as for the ship itself - really needs a refurbishment. Especially the bathrooms, carpets etc. The cabin size is on the small side, which we knew though. The bathroom is very small and the including shower very tiny.. The service on embarkation day was really bad. We found our cabin to be without bathrobes, slippers, fresh flowers and some of the ameneties in the bathroom were missing. Dirty mirrows in the cabin and messages regarding on board credits to former cruisers had not been removed from the desk. On top of that we received one of our suitcases broken during the embarkation process.. Not really an issue but when it is said that you are to expect a high service then these things are not good enough. The first night we went to the main dining room where we found the service and the food to be very poor. The staff did it’s utmost but being very few persons to serve many guests that meant that we had to ask for water, wine when we wanted a fill up. We had bought the Ultimate beverage package due to a wider selection of wines and sparkling waters. However we had to sit waiting a long time (more than 10-15 minutes) for i.e. a Perrier as the staff had to go a long way to get hold of it. Furthermore we were told in the main dining room (and later) in Angelina and Prime C that portwine (Fonseca) was not included even though we had it in writing. Not comfortable to have to discuss this. We have never experienced such a bad service on our prior 6 cruises(Celebrity and Norwegian). To summit itnup: GOOD: Very nicely decorated “Windows Cafe” - the most stylish we have seen on the ships we have been cruising on. The food in the windows cafe was delicious although the selection was quite limited. The service and the food from “In room dining” - the best we have ever experienced. Being on a small ship means the possibility to get to places that bigger ships cannot go to. The itinerary was really nice - Menorca, Corsico and Elba being our favorites BAD: The service (compared to what was to be expected on a ship that should be luxury). The need of the staterooms, bathrooms, carpets i.e. to be refurbishment. The team spirit between the staff did not seem to be the best. We had a waiter in one of the speciality restaurant that - in our opinion - did not match the job. We was really trying but he seemed to be placed wrong. I.e. his comment when we ordered lobster was a “wow” so to say he was too smart for the job and needed som training how to “behave towards guests”. The food in the Main Dining room was poor - cold and lacked in taste. On “White Night” there were no possibilities to dine outside or sit in a bar if you did not want to attend the “White Night”. The intertainment was so bad. Really missed the productions shows on prior Cruises. Value for money - not worth paying the double price compared to Celebrity. In the future we will choose Celebrity Aqua Class instead. It is important to mention that we are not the only ones who were dissapointed. We spoke to various people on board - first timers on Azamara Quest as well as people who have cruised on Quest before. There was in particular one person who had been on Quest earlier this Year in the Carribean and he could not believe that he was on the same ship this time - so different was it. We do believe that the staff did it’s utmost to give us the service that was to be expected BUT even if they do what is in their power they cannot compensate for CUTS in general made from the persons/managements in charge. We think that Azamara should be profiling themselves as a Cruise Company that can go to small places where big ships cannot go and don’t profile them as being a luxury Line. Read Less

We had been on an MSC cruise previously, and wanted to try the Yacht Club category. This is really worth the extra cost, as we are an older couple, and do not enjoy all the noise associated with the mainstream cruises. The only critique for us was the food, which was just "OK". However the serving staff were great in the Yacht Club restaurant, which made up for the food! All drinks including wine and spirits were also included in the price. We like the low key selling from the shops on board, rather than the U.S. lines that promoted the selling to an intense level. The cabin category provided a butler, who really looked after us well, as the cabin was cleaned throughout the day, with fresh towels, bottled water etc. The only staff that were not good at their job was one of the concierge staff, who seemed to be frustrated whenever a question was asked. Overall, we really enjoyed our week on the ship, and will return. Read Less

My family, along with 15 others, chose to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays on a new cruise ship....Symphony. We spent a day in Barcelona before boarding the ship, from Taxi to our stateroom 20 minutes. I was so blown away by how efficient the embarkment process was for all of us. Highlights: *We chose an inside stateroom, because, we are normally in the room 5 hours a day. Three adults and one large piece of luggage each and we had plenty of space. In May, two of us will share an outside view since there is so much sailing. *Dining main dining room service and food was fabulous! I have to say past poor reviews made me really attentive to quality and taste. We were very pleased. My gluten intolerant daughter was treated like a queen; she preordered her meals for the next night. If she chose to eat outside the dining room she was given Suresh Suyai, the head waiter's business card to get any assistance she needed. Min and Kevin were our table hosts. They were courteous, timely and funny! They recognized our anniversary with a cake and saw that all of our personal needs were taken care of. The head chef also came to the table to make sure we were pleased with our meals. *Gallery Brunch and Tour was more than a tour of massive proportion. My husband and I now truly appreciate the hard work of the kitchen and main dining staff, as well as the room service staff. Everyone should go on this tour and it should be offer at the beginning of the cruise to appreciate the operation of the dining facilities. *Staff: Adson was our server at Chops Grill. He was so pleasant and accommodating we cancelled our plans in the Main Dining room, to eat with him again. When we arrived it was clear he was working somewhere else and appeared within minutes to serve us. We would have preferred that he dined with us. He was took his role seriously, even though, he could be a comedian. His interactions with us sold us on specialty dining. We hope he is on our next cruise! *The ship was incredible! Everyone in our party from 21 years to 55 years loved the bars, casino, pool, dance clubs, spa and ships activities! *Excursions we went on the Palma De Mallorca city tour- the tour guide was very knowledgeable and humorous. Rome express train tour was perfect. It took us to the Vatican City and we were on our own for 6 hours. *Deluxe drink package was easy with the wristband, which should be free, but it's $4.99. I believe we came out ahead compared to purchasing each beverage separately. Before each excursion we would get Red bull and bottled water or coffee. As I stated, I'm anxious to invite my friends on the May 2019 trip out of Miami. Read Less

We thoroughly enjoyed being on a Viking riverboat and wanted to try a larger, ocean going Viking ship. It was amazing. Not only was it absolutely beautiful but it seemed music was everywhere. The central area seemed to have musicians playing whenever we passed by, but there were great musical shows in the theatre as well. On board was an intimate planetarium with two movies literally surrounding the guests. We enjoyed all three pools, the infinity, the large indoor and the quiet spa pool, and found swimming was a great way to counter the absolutely wonderful food on Board. Every single dish we selected was delicious. We tried the Italian restaurant twice, and next time I will reserve it for even more nights. However, the brightly decorated Norwegian restaurant was the most fun, with limitless lax and other great entrees and desserts. As with the river cruise, we could go on free tours at every stop. We found them well-organized with excellent guides. Even at those ports we had been to in the past, the tours were so educational. We never felt rushed or crowded and were taken to unusual spots, like the most elegant wine-tasting in a noble’s manse. Our room was the nicest one we have ever had on a ship. It was a balcony room with more drawers that we could possibly fill up. But that was good to know, as we can’t wait to go on a longer trip and have made plans to go on the Viking’s Buenos Aires to Santiago cruise in Feb. 2020. Read Less

We chose this cruise because it covered both the Western Med and the Adriatic Sea, going from Barcelona, Spain to Venice, Italy. Usually, you have to choose one or the other itineraries. We had cruised four times with Viking River Cruises so we knew what to expect from Viking. Viking did not let us down!!! The cabins were large with a veranda. Crew was fabulous - definitely up to Viking standards! Dining was extraordinary. Prepared well and the service was fantastic. Of course the included wine with every meal helped the meals go down smoothly! Enertainment was thoroughly enjoyable! Ranged form opera to a flautist to curent musical productions. Fitness room and sauna was exceptional. The 'snow room' in heir sauna aera was unique. It complemented the whirlpool and dry and wet saunas. Excursions at eah port of call were great. Embarkation and debarkation were handled as only Viking can do! Truly exceptional We only vacation with Viking now! Read Less

Had never been to most of the cities, had never cruised the Mediterranean or Adriatic. The brand new ship was marvelous in every way; great amenities, wonderful food, and friendly, helpful staff. Appreciated the changing menus, the locally sourced food items, and the variety of food offerings both in the main dining rooms and in the special restaurants. The on-board lectures and entertainment were top notch. The Port Talks were very helpful, as were the talks on European history. It was wonderful and special to have an astronomer on board and to hear his lectures as well. We appreciated the ship's small collection of books, the comfortable lounge areas, and the swimming pools, spa and gift shops. Given the itinerary, we were prepared for and wanted to experience a "tasting menu" of ports. Even so, a bit more time in some of the ports would have been welcome. This was particularly true in Venice, where it took an hour to get to the morning tour start point, then we had an hour tour, then an hour to get back to the ship, a fifteen minute break, and then an hour ride back to the afternoon tour start point. There must be a way to let morning tourers stay downtown and meet up at a major city location to start the afternoon tours. Except for one location (Naples), the tour guides were engaged, friendly and knowledgeable. The tour guide who took our group to and through the Venice airport was particularly helpful, since that airport is an overcrowded, confusing, disaster. Read Less

It had the itinerary I was looking for. My wife always wanted to visit Rome and this cruise allowed for that. The size of the ship and the number of passengers was a big plus. I have been on other cruises that had several thousand people on board and that was too crowded. The fact that the age was restricted to keep small children away. Not having to fight for a spot in the pools or hot tubs was great. With the smaller number of passengers the service felt more personal. The crew was always ther waiting to help and not having to rush because they were keep so busy. The option of selecting where to eat and who to sit with made the dining experience more enjoyable. Not being told what table to sit at was great. Although a bit on the small size the cabin was comfortable and the veranda was a nice experience which I hadn't had before. Read Less

Researched, seemed like it offered more, although pricey. Totally worth every penny! The staff was very professional, well-informed. We have to give great compliments to our main restaurant servers/attendants, Shendy, Hengky, Casper, Gorky, Zharko, Khadafi. I'm sorry, can't recall all, but these definitely stood out in service. The room service was also exceptional. Laundry room good, but needed staff to walk us through process as the signs were difficult to understand. The excursions were outstanding! The tours, guides were the best. We did get lost when my mother had to use the bathroom in Dubrovnik Walking Tour. Would have been nice if the guide waited as it was, I recall, a 4 hour tour, no bathroom break, just pointed to ladies room with long line ahead. Reason why we lost her. Also, cancellation of paid, not included tour policy is not acceptable for those that are unable to do, after previous day's tour. A lot of walking for my 87 year old mother that was too tired the following day to do the paid tour. Had to wait for refund, only if someone on waiting list. Luckily, one person was interested, therefore, we were refunded for the pricey tour excursion.Something that needs correction. All in all, we are going on another cruise in 2019, and 2020. Wouldn't do any other overseas cruise unless it's Viking! Read Less

For us this cruise was chosen more for the ship and duration than destinations as we were already familiar with many of them. The Viking Star is a lovely ship and the public areas and lounges are really great with space always available to sit commfortably. Our cabin was all that we wished for and in our opinion anything of higher grade would not be worth the extra money. The cabin was kept immaculate by the charming crew and any requests were met very promptly. One day we returned during the cleaning and though the bed was made it was damp at the edges. When I queried this I was told that to remove any wrinkles they spray a little water. Just like home then? We found the dining in the restaurant was good though sometimes service was slow. Most food was really good though a couple of dishes were disappointing. The buffet was OK but anything cooked to order took a long time. The worst experience for us was when we ordered a premium wine and a wine glass could not be found so we drank from a tumbler. The much vaunted icecream didn't seem that special. The Chef's table concept didn't really appeal though the food was good as were the paired wines. Manfredi's was for us the best of all and we went several times and reservations were never a problem. Once there was a long wait to be seated and served. Lunch at the pool bar was good and service quick. Mamsen's was good for something different. We were really impressed by the quality and range of entertainment on offer both in the theatre and around the ship. The service must be one of the hgh points of this ship and most crew members were happy and helpful.Bar staff in particular were great fun and it was always a pleasure to see them. We took the drinks package and we think it paid off for us. Soft drinks seemed to be free during the day and wine and beer are included with meals but access to better wines was nice especially in the speciality restaurants. As stated the destinations were not a priority for us but those excursions we did take were pretty average. Catagena in particular was a waste of time as to reach the advertised Roman theatre there was a long ride and the theatre was actually 100m from the ship. With few exceptions the people we met were friendly and interesting and we would certainly consider further cruises with Viking. Read Less

We had previous experience with a 15 day river cruise in 2014 from Budapest to Amsterdam. Wanted to see if the Ocean going cruise would be as great. Had researched many cruise lines and the single most item why we choose Viking was the previous river cruise and the fact this Viking ship did not carry as many passengers as the other cruise lines. We were looking forward to seeing many different countries in Europe. We loved the ship it was almost exactly what we expected. The staff is very simple superb, friendly and helpful at all times. Execution of all aspect of this voyage were flawless and logical. All shore excursion and returns were executed with logical sequence and always pleasant. When we made our reservation we informed my brother who also signed up for this cruise the very next day. My wife also informed her best friend in Arizona who did sign up as well. My brother and his son were able to get the cabin next to us, and my wife's girlfriend and her son got the cabin directly above us. Unfortunately the cabin was not pleasant nor conducive to good nights of sleep. The very first day we noticed that we were unable to turn the HV/AC blower off and there was a constant droning noise at 40db coming from the vent. After several phone calls to staff they were unable to resolve this issue. By the 3rd day I had a very sore throat, and at best we slept maybe 3.5 to 4 hours a night. On the 4th day a ships engineer came out to try and solve the problem. He finally figured out that our cabin environmental controls were tied to the ships hallway HV/AC and could not be shut off. The engineer solution was to bring about a 6' piece of insulation to close the vent and try to mitigate the droning noise. It helped in reducing the constant air movement somewhat but the noise at night was still very intrusive and lack of sleep was still a problem. I have pictures of this "fix" but I don't see were in this review I can attach them. We were offered a cabin on deck five but we declined. We had friends and relatives traveling with us and the move would diminish our experience even more. When we made the reservation we asked to be close together in our cabin choices, and to be on the same Buses in some of our shore excursions. In conclusion I would say that this particular cabin should never have been sold to a customer on this ship. I don't know if anyone has ever lodge a complaint about this problem cabin, but in my opinion the cabin should be converted to some thing the staff can use or maybe another laundry for the convenience of travelers on the 7th deck. I hope you can understand that we are now somewhat reluctant to plan another voyage on one of your otherwise very modern and beautiful kept ships for fear of having to put up with another insolvable problem that could ruin what was otherwise a very exiting and wonderful voyage. This was our first cruise with Viking and we couldn't be happier. Their service is amazing, and the crew is always greeting you with smiles. The decor was very Scandanavian with clean lines. I can't say enough about how spotless everything was on board the ship. Our stateroom attendant was there to greet us, and he took amazing care of us the entire trip. We loved to eat in the Restaurant, our favorite place, and the food and service was impeccable. The entertainment on the ship was ok...we loved the magician, the cruise director, Nolan's show, and the wonderful talent of the assistant cruise director! The included shore excursions were wonderful with the exception of the Porto, Portugal tour. Our only downsides: the pools are too deep! You should have a pool that people can stand in. We didn't like that there was no shallow portion. All areas of the pool were deep. We don't like paying for any trip so far in advance, and Viking is the ONLY line that requires this. We were all set with our seats and airline reservations. When we received our travel documents, our seats were on them. However when we checked in, the airline did not have us in those seats, or any seats for that matter. We had to pay to upgrade so we could sit together and there were only 2 seats together on the plane that were left, both in the exit row. Viking refused to reimburse us for the cost of these seats, and they blamed it on the airline. THAT was extremely irritating and WRONG! Read Less

As the cruising industry keeps making ships bigger, we abandoned that venue. It couldn't deliver the experience we needed. We started river cruising and found that smaller ships, smaller number of passengers, more focus on the educational experience matched our needs. Now Viking has re-invented the ocean cruise experience and delivered beyond our expectations. The ship is perfect. It had the right number of passengers. The open areas were spectacular. The food was terrific. The room was luxurious. The ability to be with a group balanced with being in a quiet one on one area was perfect. The crew addressed our every need. In conversations with them you know that Viking was treating them well and they were loyal to the company. The educational programs was outstanding. Dr Laurie gave us unbelievable insights. The cruise director was informative, engaging and funny. Matching the route to historical events was enlightening and enriching. It seems that every attention to detail really made a difference. We highly recommend this ship and diving back to the ocean cruising experience. Now we can go beyond the rivers and venture back to the seas. Read Less

We chose this cruise ship on the advice of our travel agent. It was amazing! We chose to spend one day in port on the ship, we planned a couple of excursions on our own through Viator, a couple of transfers through Azamara and one on our own. Everything went perfectly! The one "excursion" that we planned on our own was the Great Italy Tour of the Bocelli Winery and restaurant. Here is the link: https://greatitalytour.com I cannot recommend this tour enough! It was the most incredible and personal day ever! From the first time I reached out to them, to the pickup at the port, touring the countryside, the food and wine and the best driver and tour guide EVER, this was the best excursion we have ever been on in all of our travels. This was the most expensive of the excursions that we planned and almost considered not booking it but, on the recommendation of a friend, we did and are so glad we made that decision. My advice: Spend the money and cut back somewhere else if need be. It's that good! Now, the cruise: The staff of this particular cruise went above and beyond at every turn, the ship is beautifully decorated and we loved that this cruise was all inclusive; beverages, food and gratuities. I honestly don't know how anything could have been better on this ship. It was a perfect holiday! Highly recommend! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the great itinerary, going to places we have never been and wanted to visit. This cruise offered two locations for embarkation, and we chose Rome. There were several places that we wanted to visit in Rome and this gave us the opportunity to arrive in Rome a few days early and spend some additional time there. The City of Rome is actually quite a drive from the cruise port so using this as one of our ports would not have allowed enough time to see everything that we wanted to. The cruise port here in Civitavecchia had just opened so everything was brand new and the process went very smoothly. There also were not as many people embarking here as in Barcelona. so we were able to avoid the crowds. The ship was a bit different than others that we have been on. but there were no major issues. The toilet was in it's own little closet, as was the shower which was on the other side of the door of the cabin. The sink was in the room. The bed was comfortable for my husband and myself, but could be a problem for a tall person. There was plenty of storage in the cabin but very little walking room. One thing that we missed was a walking deck that went around the outside of the ship. There was a small "track" that went up and down one side of the ship on one deck. The upper deck and a few small pools, hot tubs, waterslide and climbing wall. The Garden Cafe Buffet was our choice for breakfast each morning and the food was excellent. We had a promotion for 3 nights of dining in the specialty restaurants and the food options offered were excellent. The regular dining room did not seem to offer very interesting options. The entertainment on the ship was very good, though several required reservations. This was a very enjoyable trip and I would highly recommend it. Read Less

We tried Le Bistro French cusine, Cagney's Steakhouse and Moderno Churrascaria, all the Specialty dinner was fantastic. Buffet and main Dinning food was good also but just a little disappointed at Shanghai Chinese Restaurant. The embarkation and disembarkation goes very smoothly. The housekeeper was very helpful and services was great. To save some money, we stayed at interior midship room, it was roomy for 2 person. Based upon other reviews, I would not have selected this cruise but as it was a family affair booked from points halfway around the world, it was done. Let me first say there were many positives about this cruise - our typical social interaction with the servers at bar areas was generally most excellent, our cabin steward provided us with a tidy stateroom with fresh towels at all times, the wait staff in the Red Velvet dining area was good, though understaffed for our evening table of 13. We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the ship as a whole. That waned a bit as the cruise went on, especially after the arrival of passengers (and flies!?!) from Genoa. The main dining was generally bland. There were no excellent proclamations about any of the main courses although I will say a few of the desserts were quite tasty. I think we all expected more from the Italian meals that were served but none were outstanding. We saw one show - the dancing and choreography was very basic but the costumes were quite nice as well as two good singers with one of them being exceptional. It speaks quite a bit that nobody was interested in seeing another show. We were given the run around on a couple of occasions as the where to go, especially trying to go ashore in Cannes via the lifeboats/ferries. We stood in line to get tickets, told to be in the theater at 1140, arrived early and was then told we were late, the tickets didn't matter and it was 1st come, 1st serve to go ashore. We scurried back to the other end of the ship, saw the horrendous line waiting to go ashore and eventually didn't leave until ~1300. It appeared badly mismanaged as if it was everyone's first day on the job. Disembarking on our last day was nearly as bad, so I won't rehash it - going ashore at the other ports was relatively pain free. Several members of our group took shore excursions. All felt they were ripped off, from the exorbitant prices to not being delivered what was promised. Let me reiterate there were many positives about this ship and I would like to name every crew member that provided us with joy and service but unfortunately we did not keep a tally. There were a few crew members that were disinterested but by and large, they were positive interactions throughout. As a whole, I cannot rate this cruise/cruise line favorably with the cruises we have been on with Royal Caribbean other than they don't annoyingly push their products like RCCL seems to do. Take note, RCCL. I would do this again only if, as before, we did not have a choice. Our favorite ports were La Spezia and Palma, with the least enjoyable being Genoa by far. We also liked Barcelona (mainly because we spent a couple days there beforehand), Ajaccio and Civitavecchia. We did not go to Rome, as there is too much time pressure. Forgive my scattered approach to this review, we were up nearly 24 hours and I am feeling a bit tired since coming back to home sweet home! Read Less

We had cruised with Carnival and Princess before and this year went upscale to a Viking Med. Ocean Cruise with our brother and wife as travel partners. The positives: 1) Food was excellent, 2) Less crowds with smaller passenger loads. The negatives: 1) Simple requests required escalation to management. We had a plumbing problem with the shower, special requests for honor bar drinks, that took several calls, finally to the customer service manager to resolve. 3) Our deck four laundry was broken more than it was working and the response to get it fixed was poor. 4) Some shore excursions, especially the one to Pisa was poorly managed for toilet breaks...in this case no breaks until the end of the bus ride and tour during our short free time. 5) The Spa was hard to get appointments for a simple pedicure (again requiring elevation to mgt) and this costly pedicure's quality was sub par for the $69 price tag. 6) The ship cancelled one of two days in Barcelona (a big disappointment) and getting reservations at times desired for fine dining and shore excursions was onerous, even though we reserved early. 7) Lastly, Viking seeks manual input surveys for feedback but in a short cruise with no sea days there was virtually no way to get these forms back in...they truly need an online survey system and allow customers up to a month to provide input...subsequently they probably do not get an adequate sample size. In summary, Viking costs quite a bit more than the traditional big carriers and for that cost we had many reasonable expectations that were not met.... while we enjoyed this cruise could and should have been better managed. Perhaps they are still in a learning curve with ocean cruises, an off shoot of their river cruises that they are known for. Read Less

The staff and quality of food was outstanding. The suite was large and never felt confining. Double sink vanity, large tub, walk-in closet all made the 8 day experience just like home! Every evening after dinner and drinks, we came back to a cabin that had been picked up and a bed folded down. Fresh water and a filled ice bucket everyday. The wine selection and knowledgeable wine steward was first class! The barbecue out on the deck was beyond anything we expected. The staff always made sure we had a drink. Deck chairs were plentiful and blankets were brought out for those chilly evenings. The duo that sang and played music were very good and entertained our requests making for fun evenings after dinner. The shore excursions were extremely organized and getting on and off the ship was easy and streamlined. Our only criticism, and this is very minor, was that the cabins could use a little updating, especially the bathrooms. But, storage was plentiful, and the laundry service was super and worth the extra money. Read Less

Everyone was friendly, approachable, helpful. Ship and stateroom - squeeky clean, Asef, our cabin attendant did a fantastic job twice a day. towel animals and special attention on my birthday We ate at the MDR three times, all three times good food, separate table for us two, minimal wait for the arrival of food. Wait staff attentive and friendly. The rest of the time we ate dinner at the Windjammer, good food, always found a table. Once we ate at Chops Grille for my birthday. Yeah, I guess it was worth it, as it was a special occasion. The steak was really good, but my wife took the tuna and didn't realize it was sushi. The wild mushroom soup was excellent! Otherwise, for breakfast we either went to the Windjammer (watch out on sea days, might be busy) or the Solarium Bistro, both quite good with great selection. Lunch: either the Park Cafe or the Mexican "El Loco Fresh", both excellent Shows: 1977 ice skating - we were too wiped out from the transatlantic flight to really appreciate it, but I looked at the videos we took, and it was top-notch Flight, Hairspray and the acapela group mo5aic - all really good shows, but what really blew me away was the aquashow HIRO. Even the comedy show got me laughing. Royal Caribbean should fix the 2 inch change in elevation on the exit of the Park Cafe. We watched a few people stumbling out, my wife witnessed a lady falling flat on her face. I guess Royal Caribbean will address the issue when they get sued. Embarkation - we got to the ship 3 hours before scheduled departure and breezed through even though we didn't do the pre-checkin (Royal caribbean had website problems) Debarkation - excellent, organized and even though the line for taxi's was absurdly long, we got our taxi and made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Would I do anything differently?? yes book shore excursions either before the cruise or as soon as we boarded on day 1. By the time we decided to do shore excursions, we only took the Naples by bus, 3.5 hours of sightseeing by motorcoach. Everything else was sold out. Would I sail again with Symphony? Definitely, but not from Barcelona, unless we spend more days prior to the cruise to make up for jet-lag. We only spent 1 night in Barcelona pre-cruise. Not enough to make up for a 8 hour transatlantic night flight. Read Less

We picked this cruise for the ports and the freestyle cruise. We were happy with our choice. The ship had just completed dry dock and had a new crew. Some of the minor problems this caused did not both me or my wife. The cabin with balcony was perfectly acceptable. The TV did not work for a couple of days, but that was not important to our happiness. Our excellent room steward vanished a couple of days into the cruise, but the cleaning and turn down continued. Norwegian should have explained the absence sooner, and provide a standby stewart. The explanation that she had a home emergency and left the cruise could have been given sooner, but again this did not bother our vacation. The con-signage app supplied by Norwegian was not very good, and not ready for release; you can't communicate with questions, you can't see accurate billing information, you can't make excursion or dinner reservations. This again did not adversely impact our vacation. The food was great, especially the for fee restaurants. The Norwegian supported excursions were perfect for us, a couple of fit seniors. We really loved the shows and performers in the live theater. Spending a couple of nights pre and post cruise allowed extra time to see Barcelona and Venice, although when we cruise again we will look to up it to 3 or 4 nights to allow 2 or 3 days in these ports. In summary we had a great time, great late May early June weather, were severed by friendly attentive staff, and we think the mid size cruise provides better entertainment and less crowding from the mega-ship and more interests than the smaller ship. We hope Norwegian keeps up to good work and continues to improve all areas. Steve Read Less

We chose this cruise for the ports. We wanted to do the western Mediterranean. We were not disappointed. Everything was wonderful. The room was plenty big enough. There was more than enough storage space. Two closets for hanging clothes, plus three drawers. We were able to put our two large suitcases in the one closet one on top of the other. My carry on fit by the couch near the sliding doors. The balcony was large. We were in room 9224. Contrary to what some people said, the frosted glass on the toilet and shower areas was not a problem. There also was a curtain that could be pulled over to separate that area if it bothered someone. The food was excellent. We ate at the garden cafe several times. The choices were unbelievable. The taste and Manhattan room were also terrific. Shanghai had fantastic Chinese food. The staff was incredible. So pleasant and accommodating. We usually stopped at Maltings whiskey bar on the 7th floor each night. Kit, the wait server was so nice and always knew what we wanted. Our housekeeping person, Arnold, was the best. Such a wonderful man. They both made us feel special. The Cavern had a Beatles band, who were very good. Shore excursions were a little on the pricey side, but very good. The embarkation and disembarkation were fine. Was very quick and easy. Read Less
