Review for a Transatlantic Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

A part of the cruise experience is also before the voyage, where one looks forward, is excited, and prepares for the trip. Even after 75 cruises, the excitement and expectations to the coming vacation has not diminished. We have more experience, and are quite prepared and realistic about to what to expect, so now it is up to the ship, the crew, and fellow-passengers if our expectations will be ...

37 days on the Nieuw Amsterdam part 3 - TransAtlantic

We were already on the ship when it arrived in Barcelona. We disembarked early and got on a hop-on hop-off bus. We had already seen much of the city during other cruises. We had been to Monserratt, Park Guell and the Sagrada. My DH convinced me I did not need a heavy jacket - but since I was on top of the HO-HO bus with my camera, I was very cold and had to get off and buy a jacket. Over 800 of us ...

I took this cruise because i wanted to spend time seeing barcelona and what better way to return than a cruise on a nice ship. 4 full and 1/2 days in barcelona which is one of the great cites of the world. I stayed on las ramblas. must have walked 15-20 miles through every neighborhood, with some use of the ho-ho bus when I was worn out. By monday, the date of departure, i was ready to get on ...

24 Day Mediterranean Adventure

Review for a Europe - Western Mediterranean Cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam

Like many of us CC members, I love cruising so after my last Mediterranean cruise in 2010 on the Noordam I was really looking forward to the 24 day Mediterranean Adventure on the Nieuw Amsterdam. Checking in, in Barcelona, was faultless. It was wonderfully hassle free. It wasn't until I was in the cabin that I looked at our dining arrangements and found they had us down for early sitting. This ...

This was a 24 day cruise sailing out of Barcelona with stops in Italy (Florence/Pisa, Rome, Naples and Messina), Greece (Nafplion, Katakolon, Corfu), Croatia (Dubrovnik) and Venice - then from Venice to Montenegro (Kotor), Greece (Athens, Mykonos and Sardina), Turkey (Istanbul and Kusadasi) and finally back to Venice. This was our first cruise with HAL - we have previously sailed on other cruises ...

We've sailed on the Nieuw Amsterdam before, so pretty much knew what to expect and although there seem to have been one or two cutbacks (particularly, I believe, in staffing levels), little has changed since our last sailing a year ago. Since then, we sailed on the Zuiderdam earlier this year and weren't particularly happy with some aspects of that, so were hoping that this cruise would restore ...

Just returned from a 12 night Barcelona to Venice cruise. Second time on HAL. There will definitely be a third. Embarked in Barcelona, fantastic city, will definitely return there. Embarkation speedy as we arrived mid-afternoon, avoiding the rush. Verandah cabin Deck 6(for 3) adequate size, although quite cramped when the sofa was made into a bed each evening. Bathroom with a small bath and ...

Far from Excellence

Holland America Line (HAL) prides itself of being a "signature of excellence". That is far from being true in our experience. If I had to grade them, a "C" would be a fair grade. Certainly, you will find high quality food and an attractive international atmosphere, but there're aspects where HAL needs clear improvements, especially during Summer cruises. If you're travelling with children, ...

We recently got back from our "grand tour" of Europe. This included a 5 night stay in London, followed by a 24 day collectors' cruise of the Med. The group included me, a 48 year old widow, ds16, dd13 and ds who turned 7 on the cruise. In London, we stayed at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge which was a great hotel. We had executive lounge privileges which was well worth it. It was walking ...

Here's my overdue review of our 24 day collectors voyage cruise on the Nieuw Amsterdam in July. We are two adults and a daughter who turned 11 on the trip. We are all very experienced cruisers and have been on many different lines, as well as several different HAL ships. We sailed from Barcelona all the way through the Med to Istanbul and finally back to Venice, where we disembarked. We have ...
