Worst cruise ever

Review for a U.S.A. Cruise on American Star

This was my first time on American Cruise Lines. We wanted to see some of New England. We flew into Providence, RI and stayed at the cruise line recommended Hotel. The hotel was overpriced and not helpful about what to do in Providence. The cruise line had a welcome package, but no information about Providence. We missed a great Italian restaurant area that we did not find out about until the next ...

Inland Passage aboard the Star - An Adventure on the High Seas

All of our past cruises on ACL have been excellent, but this one did not quite live up to our expectations. Herewith what did not go right (much did go right -- see "On the Positive Side" below): Our Big Delay Our Inland Passage cruise on the American Star began as planned in Baltimore, MD. But after a day at our first port in Yorktown, VA, Captain O'Connor announced that a critical engine ...

Cruise Safely During Pandemic

Review for a U.S.A. Cruise on American Star

I chose this river cruise line because of safety issues during the Covid-19 pandemic. I was a little stir-crazy from a year without leaving the house and decided to stay in the US after vaccination. This line caters to adults and has very small ships and very strict pandemic protocols. Currently, all passengers must have proof of vaccination and must be tested by medical personnel before ...

Independence in the Chesapeake

Review for a U.S.A. Cruise on American Independence (formerly Independence)

Background Information: I picked this cruise because I had a hip replacement and I wanted to test out whether I could travel independently. I use a mobility scooter or alternately a heavy duty walker which enables me to sit on it when I am tired, because I still cannot walk very far. There were single cabins available so I would not have to pay a supplement. I also wanted to revisit some of ...

An amazing disappointment

Being seasoned cruisers on ocean sailing lines, we were interested to try out the American Cruise Line's style of cruising the inland waterway enabling us to visit seaside towns that we'd never otherwise see on a big ship. ACL charged a much higher price but offered a lot less for the money. We already were prepared for a smaller ship with less amenities but found it even more lacking in service, ...

Quality of my American Cruise Line experience

Review for a North America River Cruise on American Independence (formerly Independence)

From my first contact by phone with the cruise agent through the debarkation, everyone and everything was a most pleasant experience. I have been on several cruises and this ranks near the top of the list. First and foremost was the attentiveness and attitude of the entire crew which was directed t making our trip pleasant and enjoyable. The fact that passenger count was small (at capacity) ...

Chose this cruise to visit Tangier Island, Williamsburg, Annapolis and other small communities along the Virginia and Maryland shores. The food is always wonderful with accommodations made for dietary needs. There is always a riverlorian or someone knowledgeable in the areas visited on board to lecture and impart wonderful histories and stories. The evening entertainment has, for the most part, ...

I had never been in this area. It was a good introduction to this part of our United States. I leaned so much about the area and the American Revolution from the lectures and then seeing the areas. The Captain and crew were very friendly. They learned the names of most of their travelers and actually took time to visit when they were free to do so. The food was fantastic. Each item was ...

History at it's best

Excellent service: everyone is easily accessible including the captain and they go out of their way to please. For example: We decided to leave the ship after dinner the last night to stay in a local hotel. One of the deck hands insisted on walking us over to our hotel with our luggage. When we got there he waited for us to check in and took us to our room to make sure we were settled and ...

Single Traveler

This was my first time to be a single traveler and my first time on a small ship. I was apprehensive at first, but quickly made friends and really enjoyed the trip. I was surprised about the amenities on the ship as my previous sailing had been on medium size and large size ships. I found the single cabin to be very cozy and really enjoyed the balcony. Having fresh air available was great. ...
