We chose this cruise because it encompassed both my husband's bucket list of the Komodo Dragons on Komodo Island and my bucket list of snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef. All the other stops were the cherries on the sundae. Komodo Island was rough, dry and dusty. It was exactly what we were told to expect. We were able to observe five of the dragons at a watering hole. We, also, saw a couple of juvenile lizards along with other species that are indigenous to the island. Our guides had our safety uppermost in their minds but also to give us a good experience. Very knowledgeable and answered all questions. The two snorkeling adventures that we were able to attend were far beyond anything that I could have imagined. Both snorkeling boats were comfortable and the crews were experienced in handling all comers from the most qualified scuba divers to the beginner snorkeler. I brought back so many pictures of vibrant corals and fish. Couldn't click the camera or turn my head fast enough. We went on many of the included excursions and found the guides to have a true love of their city or region. Read Less

The cruise hit the locations I wanted to visit. Super itinerary, excellent food and service. The alternative gourmet selections, especially the Chefs Table, were excellent. Shipboard internet access was reliable. Great lectures, especially historic perspectives, scientific topics and educational lectures. The crew was reliable and friendly, and most helpful in assisting with excursions, dining reservations, etc. The captain’s frequent updates on the ship’s location, weather, etc. was very welcome. Our Stateroom steward was very attentive and helpful, and he kept our stateroom clean and comfortable, and would often provide useful advice. The physical fitness facilities were first class (and used often). Spa facilities were excellent. Disembarking and security procedures at ports of call were handled professionally and smoothly. The shore excursions, both inclusive and optional, were well designed for maximum effect. I would also like to commend the very effective way Viking handled pre and post cruise accommodations, air travel and administrative issues. I will definitely choose Viking ocean cruises in the future. Read Less

I had always wanted to go to Australia. My husband and I had a great time. Processing to board and disembarkation went very smooth. Our time in Bali before setting sail was at a beautiful resort. The entire crew took such good care of us. We felt so special, the housekeeping staff always remembered our names and the dining experience wonderful with a wide variety of choices. Having our laundry done was a real treat. The ship was spectacular, always clean and beautifully decorated. We really enjoyed the shipboard talks and entertainment. Most of the shore excursions were extremely hot and physically demanding. Many of the participants had trouble along the way. Use of the tenders to primitive location didn’t always go smoothly, ours hit and pierced the fiberglass hull at Komodo Island. The things we saw were once in a lifetime from the Komodo dragons to the awesome beauty on the towns and shoreline of Australia. I leaned so much about this country that I didn’t know. Read Less

Chose this cruise because of the itinerary. Embarkation was kind of chaotic but the disembarkation was very smooth. Viking does not administratively handle single people well. I guest this is not their market. However, more and more people are widowed and traveling alone. Cabin and service was excellent; entertainment and activities were on the low side; dining was good as was expected; included shore excursions were nothing to write home about; optional (paid) excursions were good and some above my expectations. The specialty restaurants were included in the cruise fare and were average. I was expecting a higher class of restaurant. The ship was well appointed and very comfortable. This cruise was on a different level as far as the what the destination has to offer than a European cruise and people have to recognize the history of the area to get the most out of this trip. Viking will have to change their singles policy before I would travel on their Ocean Cruise again. Read Less

We choose this cruise because of the pricing and the inclusion of the flight in the price. It was a trip of lifetime made within our reach. Also, Viking is a “no” children cruise line something we prefer. The ship is beautiful (cabin sufficient, clean and comfortable. Loved the sunrise in Sydney from our balcony), food very good (we loved Manfredi’s), shows “cruise ship” entertainment, crew absolutely wonderful. Embarkation and disembarkation easy and well organized. One issue was the “description” of excursions in Indonesia. Lombok was listed as an excursion to Senggigi where you can stroll beaches, explore the shops and business along High St. etc....We were driven to a large chain hotel, beach resort. There were no shops, no businesses. Your choices were to walk the beach, swim or each in their restaurant. The Komodo NP was great however it was over 100 degrees F and 90% humidity. Many people were not prepared for the hike. There were no rest stations along the way with water or seating for people. The staff however were sitting in shaded area and some actually offered their seats to those struggling. Needs to be better planned (taking weather into consideration) or described. I don’t think people understood “demanding.” Also, if you have traveled with Viking before you expected each excursion to have different level available. Other excursions were very informative and fun. I would like to have had more time in the embarkation city, Bali and disembarkation city of Sydney. We did stay an additional couple of days in Sydney on our own since the cost under Viking was about 5x that of what we could do on our own. My issues are not with the cruise but with the planning and Viking Air. They did not seem to have any idea what had and had not been done. We paid the extra amount to do reservations early, no one seemed to know that (travel agent issue?). We came into Bali just after midnight and were told we would be picked up by Viking and taken to a hospitality suite to rest and refresh before going to the ship later in the day. After not receiving a confirmation for the hotel, etc. I called again. No one knew anything about that and we were told we would have to take care of that...after a conversation with a supervisor, etc. we were told again were would be picked up and taken to the Sofitel Hotel. Still no confirmation received. I called the day before our trip to make sure all was set only to find out we were being picked up by Viking but would be taken to the pier to await or ship...3 women on a pier at 1:00am awaiting embarkation! Seriously! After a long discussion, a call back and another after hours call, the transportation and hotel were confirmed and paid by Viking. All went smoothly from there. I don’t know if I would use Viking Air again even though air being included is what made the trip affordable since it was an issue from start to finish. My previous working with Viking had always been so smooth and easy. I will say everyone we spoke with were very nice and wanted to help so not sure what happened once the calls were disconnected! I truly enjoy Viking adventures and yes would travel with them again and hopefully will do that again in the near future. Thank you for a wonderful, unforgettable adventure of a lifetime! Read Less

To see Australia. Ship and staff were wonderful. Food in all restaurants was exceptional. Loved all the cities we visited. Wish the cruise had been longer. The weather was hot in some areas but was always comfortable aboard the ship. Met many wonderful people and made many friends. Lots of entertainment and activities to keep us busy while out to sea. Very informative information was given before each excursion. Cabins were always clean and well stocked. The ship was handled very well by the crew. We often did not even feel us leave or arrive in ports. Loved that the cruise was all adults. We are already looking for another cruise. Would like to do another ocean cruise but would also like to do a river cruise in Europe. We stayed in Sydney for two days after leaving the ship and feel Sydney is a beautiful city. Would love to visit there again sometime. Read Less

We have been in love with Viking since our first River Cruise! We've been on 3 Ocean Cruises since. However, our last experience aboard Orion was not up to our expectations: The accommodations at both our pre- and post-tours were beautiful! What we couldn't figure out was why there was such a problem going from the Hotel to the ship. It seemed to be too many people and not enough busses. Why was this not foreseen? It was very chaotic and time consuming. The same thing happened several times throughout the holiday, at Komodo people were lined up on the pier (98 degrees, F) to get the tender, and it took us over an hour to board the catamaran to go out to the Great Barrier Reef. Compared to our other experiences, Viking seemed very disorganized. We were also discouraged with the choices at the Chef's Table: Almost EVERYTHING was too spicy or, on the only non-Asian night, they served fish.....not for our pallets. We also had much greater expectations for the Planetarium: Other than a very quick explanation of the zodiac by the resident expert (whose company we really enjoyed) it was used for short 3-D movies (which we have at home) and not really used as a planetarium! Although this cruise was our choice, we thought some of the ports were less than interesting or exciting. ie: Thursday Island, Airlie and Newcastle. We should have not depended on the "included" excursions. As we are sure that we will be on other Viking adventures, and we understand that in the Ocean Industry, you are still a "start-up" company, the over-all staff, though mostly bend over backward, is still in the "rookie" stage. As an odd thought, at 18 months, this was the oldest ship that we've been on! Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the December sailing dates and because we wanted to snorkel at the Great Barrier Reef. It's our first Viking cruise, and we were not disappointed. From the pre-cruise stay in Nusa Dua at a lovely hotel, with a great tour to three temple sites, to the interesting shore excursions, we were very pleased with the cruise. Our cabin was spacious and we had a great steward. Dining options were plentiful, and we actually preferred the variety and choice of portion size in the World Cafe for most meals. The specialty menus offered at one of the restaurants were delightful. We particularly enjoyed the lectures and music offered on board, especially the Classical Duo. We chose several "adventurous" excursions: visits to rainforests and snorkeling trips were led by good guides and were educational as well as recreational. It was a pleasure to have a NASA astronaut on board, and his lectures were fascinating. We took advantage of the walking track on Deck 2 and the sauna (and cold pool and hot tubs) throughout the voyage, but especially on sea days. Entertainment in the big auditoriums was good and not too flashy for our more casual style. Service was impeccable. There was only one shore excursion we're glad we avoided: the trip to Komodo Island wasn't well planned, and it was very hot and crowded for those who chose the included tour that day. We were happy to have gone snorkeling instead on a lovely pink beach. We were surprised at how much we enjoyed all our time in Indonesia, especially in Bali. We liked this cruise so much we're signed up for a New Zealand trip in the future. Read Less

Location---never been to Australia. Had a great experience before on a Viking cruise. Dining is awesome. Love the Italian option, but spread it around with main dining room and Chef's Table. Bars really fun. Cabin amazing, but common areas so appealing that we really did not need the size cabin we took. Entertainment was awesome on some nights and mediocre on others. The Viking singers were awesome with song and dance. But they only did a few shows. The comedian/magician was also great. I'd love for there to be great entertainment every night, not just about half the nights. But the half that were great were really great. Could use an extra day in Cairns. Generally, the excursions were at least good and sometimes amazing. Always well organized and on time. Most memorable experience was in Brisbane when we had cocktalis while an incredible lighting show was happening over the mainland. Finally, the wind got so strong that the heavy chairs and tables on the deck actually started blowing around. Deck crew got us inside about 10 seconds after the rain hit and we got 100% soaked. Too much fun. Read Less

Wanted to visit Bali and Australia. Requested special diet for all the flights and NONE were passed on the airlines. For some unknown reason, Viking decided to cancel our return flights from Melbourne, and never told us. On board the kitchen was limited on what they could prepare for special diets (GF), meaning only gelato and fruit for dessert. Excursions were poorly executed to really nice places. Some bus drivers great, others were awful. Service in the main Dining Room was spotty, ask for sparkling water and you are re-filled with regular water. Place your dinner order and wait anywhere from 20 to 45 minutes for main course. Tours in Bali were way to long (10 hours on day after flying for 30 hours), were told to pack for 2 days for next stop and rest of luggage stored until ship arrived; AFTER we completed the 10 hour tour. On the post cruise, we were booked on super cheap airline and had to pay a lot for all the flights because Viking did not cover the excess baggage at time of booking. Very sloppy. Would NEVER let Viking do AIR or pre-tours on the Ocean Cruises. Read Less

We had been on Viking before so I am comparing this cruise to the Viking cruise we took last year - plus other cruises we have taken. Dollar for dollar you are not going to do better than booking a Viking cruise - we were so impressed that we booked a river cruise for 2020. The food was very good (not 5* but definitely 4*) - The entertainment was surprisingly good - not as many entertainers or length of shows that you will see on other cruises - but very enjoyable 45 minute show. Here comes the miss - and it was a big miss - where I am only giving it 1*! Excursions: they were awful - totally unorganized - drivers that didn't stick to the itinerary - drivers and travel guides who were completely lost (subjectively and figuratively). Admittedly, the hot and humid weather and rain surely didn't help - but I have the feeling it would have turned out the same if the weather was different). Example of poor planning by Viking: one of our major excursions was to the island of Komodo - they tendered us in where we all joined groups to hike around the island. I would say that we were there about an hour to 1 1/2 hours. It was so hot and humid that a few people passed out. Arriving to the dock to get back on the tenders and (surprise) - no tenders. At this point there were over two hundred people waiting in line for the tender - none were in sight. The time from the ship to the dock was at least 20 minutes to perhaps 30 minutes. There was no protection from the sun and people were about to jump into the water to cool off (a few more people on the dock passed out as well). That evening the cruise director apologized but it was a little late. I am probably being generous by giving the excursions 1*. Read Less

As a background, we have taken numerous Viking River and sea cruises. This cruise had been not to Viking standards. Very disappointed and would not recommend. One takes Viking for convenience of travel, to see destination and not just to stay on the ship for the duration of the trip. The itinerary for this trip from Bali to Sydney was poorly thought through and poorly organized. The trip was essentially a stay on the ship for the duration of the cruise. The shore excursions were a total disaster. Staff was not knowledgeable and unable to help much. It takes a long flight to get to Bali and Sydney from US. To take long flights just to stay on the ship is not the objective. The Komodo National park excursion was a total disaster. One can see Komodo Dragons in a bird sanctuary in Ubud. The shore excursions are very expensive. One can book the same excursion on line for substantially less. We have done this extensively as well as several fellow passengers. Read Less

The Viking Orion is a beautiful ship with good food and stylish cabins BUT.... I would bet that none of the staff have ever been on one of their included shore excursions to test it out. If they had, none of the included tours would have been included for this trip. The tours were worthless. This is a new itinerary for Viking and they have not been able thus far to put an itinerary together that is worthwhile. 1. The 3 bus tours we took had the driver as tour guide. They are obviously bus drivers and not tour guides. Plus, the intercoms on the buses were so bad that unless you sat in the first 3 rows, you couldn't hear what was said. So we drove around aimlessly in older busses with no bathrooms and no tour guide. 2. We paid for an upgraded tour for a boat ride through the mangroves in Darwin and the tour description said we would walk from the port a few steps to get on a tour boat. It was over 100 degrees that day, about 90% humidity, and low and behold, the ramp for our tour boat was out of operation and we were sent on a forced march for 1.5 miles to get to the tour boat. No shuttle bus was provided. We were told by the Viking crew not to worry, a shuttle bus would pick us up to return us to the Orion. NO! No one showed up and the tour boat dropped us at a different spot than the pick up point and it took us about an hour to find our way back to the ship. And for this torture we paid $139/person. 3. At Komodo Island, we were again taken on a march around the island for 1.5 hours, again in 100 degree heat. There was nothing to see except brush and dirt until finally we came to the watering hole for the Komodo Dragons. We spent 10 minutes looking at the dragons and then it was a short 5 minute walk back to the ship from the watering hole. So, everyone was wondering WHY? Why not just take us directly to the Komodo watering hole. On the forced march, 2 people in our group were overcome by the heat and had to be helped out. When we got back to the tender, an emergency tent had been set up and one person had to be evacuated by air. What a disaster. Still can't figure out why they just didn't take us directly to the watering hole. 4. Thursday Island. There is nothing to see there except a pub. We had a whole day of doing nothing because there was nothing of interest. Tell me again why we stopped at Thursday Island? Everyone we spoke to had the same complaint. 5. The excursion on WhitSunday Island was canceled due to rough sea, but no other excursion or activity was scheduled in case of bad weather. So we had again nothing to do and the Excursion staff neglected to tell us that we would need a drivers license on Hamilton Island if we wanted to tour the island. 6. We were never able to get a reservation at Manfredis except for an 8:30 reservation on the day of the captains farewell. So we had to skip Manfredis to go to the captains fairwell. And, everytime we peeked into the restaurant there were numerous empty tables? Even at 7-7:30 each night, the place was half empty! What??? DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR unless you want to just stay on the ship for the 15 days. If you are expecting anything else, forget this tour. Even the upgraded paid for tours were not up to par. Waste of time and money. Read Less

Combining factors reduced this cruise/tour to nearly unpleasant experience. The two factors were our lack of due diligence studying the time of year for down-under travel and Vikings failure to provide their reputed excellent service with regard to air arrangements and shore excursions. Many other reviews refer to the shore excursions both free and paid-for so no real need to reiterate. We believe Viking learned a great deal from the negativity which we found to be quite vocal on this trip. Do not do an outback at this time of year, and Viking does need to look at their tour providers more critically. We were upgraded to a wonderful cabin, 8011, far above our pay-grade and that alone increased our rating and eased the other discomforts, but not enough to move to above average. We received four free special dining reservations which provided a lovely variation to main dining. Don't recommend "food-court" except for lunch. One really bright idea: the Maya Ubud Resort which hosted the 3-day pre-cruise. One not so good was Komodo Island which might handle a 200 passenger ship--they were overwhelmed with our numbers. If you spent time later in the evening with then and participated in their games, they greeted you and treated you differently. Because of our age we thought this would be a good way to see Australia. Flight arrangements were terrible, sent us north to go west, long layovers. Food was very good and service excellent. Food in dining room was very good, specialty dining was excellent, World Café could have been better. Excursions could have been better, on some you spent more time on the bus than being able to enjoy the sight you were visiting. We've taken Viking River Cruises and I think the excursions and value for our money was much better. Also I think the crew was more attentive to all. The ship was glorious, the crew was very kind and attentive, the music, artwork, planetarium, movie under the stars, the speakers, afternoon tea, dining, a well pampered facial, accommodations and so much more were all wonderful. Within the ship and crew, I have nothing but appreciation and thanks for jobs well done. So, making allowances for the "newness" of the ship, crew and excursions - any and all concerns I may have experienced dealt with some excursions (and I would guess Viking made appropriate adjustments). At Komodo, the steps on the dock and the rapidity of return of guests to the tender each rate review and improvement. Communications among the Komodo staff on the ground were obviously lacking when a guest was missing from the group (turns out that she or he had simply walked back and was fine) and in quickly locating the dragons. This becomes a safety concern - especially given the retirement age of some guests, environment and remoteness. The cancellation of trip to the Great Barrier Reef was disappointing (but rightfully so due to poor weather) - but the fees were refunded and a nearby aquarium visit was quickly arranged and a surprisingly good visit. Otherwise, I would prefer to forego visiting Thursday Island and perhaps Darwin in favor of spending more time in Sydney. Visits to the animal reserves were great! I was delighted to pet a koala and kangaroo - and see a duckbilled platypus and feed some jumping crocs. The photographs of wildlife and landscapes I took during this trip are amazing and creating a lifetime of memories! This also included "sharing" some of my lunch with wild cuckatoo on beautiful Hamilton Island! Would I go again - absolutely! I have been on multiple cruise lines, but Viking will be the only one I will travel with in the future. Read Less

Have enjoyed previous Viking River Cruises so much we wanted to try the Viking Ocean Cruise and wanted to see Australia before we got too old to travel that distance. We found the Viking Ocean Ships professionalism is not up to par with the River Cruises. My wife is gluten free with some other food allergies which we had informed the Viking booking agent but the available foods for her on ship were below par. The ship was beautiful and functioned well but much of the staff seemed confused and inexperienced. A few of the tours, especially Komodo Island, where unorganized and actually dangerous as the steps necessary to access the docks were old and hazardous and times to load on the return exceeded one hour in very hot and sunny environment. Many were showing signs of heat exhaustion. Once again, the ship and the cabins were very nice. The entertainment was nice. There were many different food offerings as long as you do not have any food issues. The Viking booking agent made changes to our itinerary that the Viking Ship staff and we were unaware of that affected our post cruise itinerary causing us much distress.60 Read Less

We have sailed on Viking Ocean before, and will do so again. Check-in and debarking was excellent. We had a PS3 cabin, which was worth the money. The food was quite good; although they should have more green salads, and the included wine were very drinkable; a Tempranillo from Spain, and a red from the Vaucluse in France. The entree portions were often quite small. The food in Manfredi's was OK, but the Chef's Table was awful; miniscule portions, and we headed up to the buffet for desert. We found the lecturers to be quite good, particularly the Astronomer Dr. Wright. The Planetarium was enjoyable, but the 'shows' could have been done on an Imax, and pushed the obsolete 'Orion Mars Project'. There were a lack of some of our favorite activities: Zumba at 7PM!!!!; and no ballroom dance lessons (the entertainers reduced to 4 from 8 on our last voyage) were busy learning their new routines. The band, while good for some types of music never played real dance music in Torshaven. No tangos or rumbas, and very few swings or cha-chas. The cabin was magnificent; and service by our attendant the best we've had in years. The only problem with the cruise were the Awful!!! included tours, except for the one in Bali, which was fine. Komodo was a disaster; we saw three drugged dragons and the heat was very bad; I saw two people pass-out from the heat; one waiting for a tender, and one in the jungle. The crewman in the jungle stood there mouth and did not know what to do. There was no way to call for help. Eventually the passenger was helped up. Overnight in Darwin: Tours arrived at museums 45 minutes before they opened, sometimes expecting you to stay 90 minutes at a small exhibit. Awful guides. Thursday Island: Nothing to do, but walk around a dreary village. Included tours in Cairns and Townsville were also 'misses'. The tour staff stopped giving out rating sheets. Brisbane was wonderful, but only a long day. Read Less

We have come to avoid big ships, 1400+. We abhor having to walk through casinos and don't like the idea of a floating shopping mall, so we decided after 12 cruises on Holland America to try Viking. We may never go back. First and foremost the ship, service and dining were impeccable. The crew was outstanding and international. The lectures and planetarium were superb. The ports were mostly good but shore excursions in two instances were not well done, but in Viking's defense, it was an itinerary that had never been done before. The cabins are slightly smaller than others, but since the other facilities on the ship were so comfortable we spent little time in our Veranda deluxe cabin. The cabin attendants were prompt and available at all times. We especially liked the diverse dining options in the World Cafe, Chef's Table, Restaurant and other eateries. It was a real variety. The venues were designed in such a way that you didn't have a view of two hundred people across a huge expanse. Much more intimate and comfortable. The last two nights, the ocean was rocky and we heard a tapping all night and the crew told us it was the way the ship was constructed! The arrangements for getting us back from Komodo Island were poorly done and two people fainted waiting in the hot sun for another tender. The staff was good otherwise, particularly the housekeeping crew. viking does have a large medical center with good equipment. they have an EKG machine and EMT equipment.
