My daughter & I went on this cruise together. She did the research to learn about suitable cruises in our budget & time frames. Also, people she knew had taken Viking cruises & described & recommended this Rhone River Viking cruise. We enjoyed several of the shore excursions that included healthy hikes as well as the ship's entertainment & activities. Mia, the activities director, joined in many of the socializing times--dancing, etc.--& seemed like a new-found friend. All the tour guides, selected by Viking, were pleasant, knowledgeable, & accommodating for such extra things as finding an unplanned toilet facility. Food was good--(great duck & ever-flowing wines!)--& the servers & all the staff acted like personal friends. We especially enjoyed the piano performances of the pianist, Pedro. All service was excellent--no problems. A mixup regarding several passengers' luggage occurrred with the airline from Amsterdam. The Viking representative who met us at Marseille was very helpful about making the claim for our delayed luggage. It was found & delivered to our room by evening. This was typical of the friendly personal service of all the Viking employees. The room we shared was comfortable & ingeniously designed for maximum convenience of amenities. We enjoyed the friendliness of the small number of passengers (vs. large boat ocean cruises) & were also happy to find some new friends to keep in contact with. We found that friendships especially flourished when we spent time in the lounges. Our cruise did not have children. No one could possibly get seasick on the etxtremely smooth & quiet movement of the ship; if we didn't look out the windows, we didn't realize we were moving at all! Yes, we are looking forward to planning our next river cruise on a Viking boat next summer! Read Less

This was our first river cruise after about 18 ocean cruises so a totally different experience. We traveled as a group of 6 adults (brothers and wives) and I can say it was a great cruise and look forward to other river cruises. Itinerary: 7-Night Avignon to Lyon. Could not sail from Lyon to Macon on the 6th day due to concerns about water level so we took a bus from Lyon on our wine country trip. Not a big deal since we were going to return to Lyon anyway after the sail to Macon. Embarkation: Arrived by train in Avignon and took short cab ride from train station to the ship...on board by 11:00 am. The cabin was ready and bags delivered so we immediately went to the buffet lunch. Ship: The Heimdal is one of the Viking Longboats and we were very impressed with the layout and design of the ship. The verandah cabin was probably the best designed cabin we have experienced on any cruise liner. While slightly smaller, it was very well thought out with plenty of storage space and great lighting. The public areas like the dining room, lobby area and lounge were also very well thought out and comfortable. Did not spend as much time on the sun deck as expected as there are so many locks and bridges on the Rhone that it seemed to be closed during sailing times. Service: The staff were all exceptional. With a small ship, you get to recognize and know much of the service staff and they were all very accommodating, cheerful and helpful. Food and Drink: All of the dinner entrees were good to excellent. The Coq au Vin was especially good one evening. Breakfast and lunch were buffet with some items available from a menu. The special Provence Lunch was a nice offering one day. While the menu may not have as many choices as an ocean liner, there was still enough variety to make most people happy. Wine, beer and soft drinks were served at no cost during lunch and dinner (and Mimosa's at breakfast) and they kept the glasses full. I thought we would be experiencing a different wine each evening but the white wine never changed (Chardonnay) and 4 of the 7 nights the red was a merlot. But with being in wine country you can bring your own back on board to enjoy. Shore Excursions: The fact that a tour is included in each port makes a river cruise much more inclusive than an ocean cruise. We had great guides in Arles, Viviers, Lyon, Vienne and for our Wine excursion. The wine tasting and subsequent bus ride thru vineyards was some amazing scenery. Program Director: Our program director was Christine from England and she seemed to have clones...she was everywhere. I was impressed with the way everything was organized and the hard work she put in. Entertainment: We knew not to expect much in the form of entertainment. We had a piano player/singer who had full computerized music background accompaniment who was enjoyable and quite a bit of dancing took place....even a conga line one evening. On one evening a group of local talent from Lyon performed and an accordion player was aboard another evening during dinner and drinks. Debarkation: Even though we did not have Viking transfers, they took care of having a taxi reserved for us at 7:00 am to take us to the train station and even loaded our bags. Much different and so much easier than on an ocean cruise. Impressed with the extra service. Conclusion: We had read that Viking was the "Ford or Chevy" of river cruises. Not sure if it was meant as a put down of Viking, but we were very impressed with everything on this cruise and definitely want to do another river cruise. And Viking delivered a really good product. One brother did miss the casino from large ships but we were mostly tired, full of food, and ready to rest up for the next day's adventure. Read Less

We loved the entire Viking experience, starting with 3 days in Nice. However, I would say that hotel in Nice wasn't quite up to our expectations. All things considered the hotel sufficed, considering how much we loved Nice and touring the area, including a side trip to Monaco. We then took about a 4 hour bus ride to Avignon, along with many Viking cruise members, from Nice. Once we embarked on the ship the entire experience was simply fantastic. From our state room,to the crew,to the food, to the entertainment and the daily tours, everything was 5 Stars. We are currently looking at a Viking Russian Cruise for this coming fall. We loved our first experience with Viking and highly recommend cruising with them. By the way, the daily port of call tours were very informative, set up in small groups, with the headphones and having very knowledge, attentive and professional tour guides. The buses were extremely comfortable with bathroom facilities and easy access on and off the bus. Read Less

This was our first experience of any cruise and it will not be our last. There was attention to detail in all aspects of our week in Provence. The staff and the programme director Patricia were all so helpful and always charming. A good balance of included excursions along free time or optional additional trips. The ship being fairly new was modern and always clean. The food was very good with options to eat all meals in the main restaurant as well as the closed or open lounge areas. The cabin while small was well designed with good use of space. We were in the lower deck with only a window but this was not an issue for us as its only a flight of stairs to the other decks. We met some great people and the seating at tables or 6 or 8 means everyone chats and shares experiences . There were daily updates on the events for the following day and a written page in the cabins as a reminder of times etc. I must say everyone kept to the agreed schedule at all times so no hanging around for 1 or 2 people at coach or pick ups. The Quitevox and earpiece was great for following the commentary of the guides . The only minor niggle was the absence of rose wine for most or the trip which in Provence is surprising but we made do with champagne instead! Many thanks to all at Viking and we hope to see you again soon. PM Read Less

My daughter and I chose this cruise because we had been to Paris and the Loire Valley several years ago, but we had never been to southern France. We were delighted with the service provided by the crew, beginning with being met at the airport as soon as we landed, and the service from then on was absolutely wonderful. Any request we made was taken care of, and the crew never seemed to mind that we asked. We arrived at the ship in plenty of time to explore Avignon, but, because I am 79 years old and had just had a long flight from Florida (USA,) I opted to take a nap instead of exploring the city. I knew we had a scheduled trip to the city in two days, anyway, so I knew I wouldn't miss seeing Avignon. We were especially impressed with our cabin and the servicing of the cabin. Whenever we left the cabin it was cleaned and the beds made. This happened several times a day! The shore excursions were well planned and led by locals who knew their town or city well, and since we opted for the leisure tours, the pace was do-able even for someone my age; and I didn't feel that we had missed anything by taking the slower pace. I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone looking for a vacation cruise that was small enough that one could get to know their fellow passengers and the crew, without the hassle that comes with the larger ocean ships. Also, the food we were served during the entire trip was better than I've had on any other cruise. Even though my daughter is in her early 50's and has been on numerous ocean cruises, with tours that took all day, she found the slower pace and the history of the towns we visited very interesting, and wants to take another Viking Cruise Lines tour again soon. The level of service and personal attention (without being intrusive) on this cruise was wonderful! In a very short time the crew members have learned your preferences and make every effort to anticipate your needs. I was very impressed with the excellent way they handled an unexpected situation. There was a small but annoying problem with our stateroom. As soon as I told someone they were very responsive, sending people to try to fix the situation. After a couple of tries it seemed like this could not be quickly corrected. Several members of the crew collaborated and came up with a wonderful suggestion that positively delighted us. We are very grateful to Desi, Bea and the several other members of the crew behind the scenes who were quickly able to make this happen. They have made me a very loyal Viking Cruise fan. They really do sweat the details. The programs are put together very thoughtfully, yet our Program Manager, Nicholas, also encouraged us to go out on our own, and helped with recommendations. The food and special events were fun and often delicious. Read Less

My sister and I decided to travel together. When we sat down to discuss plans, we both pulled out the Viking River Cruise brochure! Our bucket list trip - cruising the Rhone in the south of France! Viking could not have made this experience easier from our arrival in Marseilles to our departure in Lyon. The ships, accommodations, staff and crew, excursions, cuisine - just perfect. Now, keep in mind, due to heavy rains in France, the rivers were exceedingly high. River traffic was closed because ships could not move safely in the fast running currents, pass under bridges or through locks! Though our "cruising" was limited to moving from bridge to bridge in order to re-position the ship, Viking made certain we did and saw everything we had contracted to do and more! Halfway through our trip, we were transported to Lyon where we boarded a sister ship (those passengers were transferred to the Delling) and continued our adventure. Other than having to pack our bags once more, the change of venue was seamless and the Heimdel was just as comfortable, welcoming and efficient as the Delling. As I sit here writing this critique, I realize that there is nothing I could complain about. Faced with a situation clearly out of Viking's control, this organization went above and beyond to see to the comfort and pleasure of their guests. Would I travel with them again? My sister and I are planning to cruise the Romantic Danube next year! I simply cannot wait! Read Less

Viking and their representatives could not do enough for my wife an i on our 20th anniversary trip. from the greeting at the airport to great restaurant recommendations in Nice the service was superb. Chef Nickoli even made sure Sylvia got crepes one morning after she asked him why crepes were not on the menu in Southern France. The late afternoon daily briefing were a great opportunity to reconnect with the friends we had made to hear about their day and share the details of our adventures. Suzi the Cruise Director was wonderful and always accommodating to requests. Followed by a fabulous dinner with daily specials.....who would actually request something other than the Chef's recommendation? Our room was perfect and the balcony was the perfect spot for us to relax during the day with a glass of wine while listening to the jazz station on the satellite radio. We selected this cruise because we wanted to see the south of France and this seemed like a nice way to accomplish that. Prior to this, we had not taken a river cruise and thought that this would be a memorable experience. It was! It was great to have Viking take care of the travel arrangements and transfers, making that part of our trip worry free. After arriving in Marseille, we were promptly met and delivered to the Buri in Avignon. In a very short time we were able to access our cabin. We selected a standard cabin and while it was small, it was nicely appointed with enough space to store our belongings. Having the in-room safe was a great feature and something that we used each day. The bathroom was adequate also and featured nice toiletries that were replenished as needed. Housekeeping did a very good job in the cabin each day. The cruise director on the Buri was quite personable and informative. She was able to answer any questions and always made herself available to help. She set an upbeat tone to the cruise and made the experience fun. In the ports of call, we found the tour guides to be excellent. They were most informative and entertaining. There was always plenty to eat onboard the vessel and the food was tasty. It was nice to have the option to order from the menu for lunch or to access the buffet. The wait staff was attentive and helpful if we had questions about the entrees etc. It is nice to be able to enjoy complimentary wine or soft drinks at lunch or dinner while onboard the Viking vessels. The included wi-fi service on-board was also a welcome addition to have. Overall, the cruise was memorable for all of the right reasons! Read Less

This was our first cruise (of any kind), and our expectations were mixed. We utilized Viking air service on both ends of the trip and the embarkation and disembarkation were flawless. We arrived at the ship just in time to get settled and ready for dinner. The ship was marvelous. Our stateroom with balcony was well appointed and contained all of the necessities. It was not overly spacious -- but then we didn't spend a lot to time there. The lounge was comfortable and the staff friendly and welcoming. We particularly liked the open seating at meals, as that gave us the opportunity to meet and get to know a number of other couples. Some we enjoyed several meals with, others only one -- but all were enjoyable. We learned a lot form these experiences. Shipboard entertainment was limited, and that suited us just fine. The piano bar in the lounge was fun and entertaining. The service on board ship was excellent. From the Captain, to the Program Director, Concierge, to the wait staff and the housekeepers -- all were friendly and extremely helpful. One evening, in celebration of Viking's Travel and Leisure #1 ranking we had an opportunity to celebrate with the "whole" crew, including kitchen staff that we seldom saw. That was a particularly memorable evening. The ports of call, Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Tournon, Vienne, and Lyon were delightful. Having the opportunity to "drop out" and explore on our own was great. Several cities we visited were in the midst of festivals that added excitement -- but also crowds. Local shopping opportunities were a fun past time. My wife and I look forward to traveling with Viking again! Read Less

In my mind the south of France sounded like a good choice for our first river cruise. Both embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly; and during the course of the cruise we appreciated easy and continual accessibility to the staff. The architectural beauty of the region, the food, the pace of life all contributed to our choice. To be able to drive by castles and the stone homes so beautifully landscaped and full of colorful flowers and then take a tour of same - exquisite. The food of the region is delicious, and we enjoyed eating (and looking at the beautiful presentations) of what Viking served on the ships (we were on 2 due to the swollen rivers). The dining room, by the way, was filled with light, so our breakfast before departing for the morning tour was so comfortable. The tours offered to us each morning well defined each village and destination, and the tour guides were quite knowledgeable and personable, and they didn't rattle off too many unnecessary "facts". The ships were both clean and attractive with plenty of light; the public areas were comfortable and encouraged us to mingle with other passengers. Our cabin was adequate for our needs; the bed linen was lovely, really lovely. We enjoyed the choice of ports especially Arles, Vivier, Avignon, and Lyon were our favorites. Since we were berthed across the street from the old city in Avignon we were able to enjoy extra time there. We enjoyed the musicians each evening, but our favorite was the group of 4 singers/musicians who treated us to French opera and the most beautiful chansons. I have never heard a male tenor sing "La vie En Rose" , and this tenor did justice to the song. Would I go again? You bet!! Read Less

Despite the fact that we were not able to cruise at all (by order of the French government), we had a wonderful time. All of the crew and staff did an excellent job of reacting to the situation. We never missed one excursion - it just took a longer time to get places having to use busses for everything and the bus rides were longer because of not being able to cruise to the next ports. Basically we had a "floating" - but not moving - hotel/restaurant. The "ship swap" went smoothly and having two women from the Delling come with us, made it very comfortable. All of the meals were excellent, the activities planned on the boat were interesting and fun. We did the three day extension in Paris and were very impressed with all the support we had from Viking staff in the hotel, the train stations, and at the airport. We will definitely travel with Viking again. Read Less

Loved the no pressure on board. When you river cruise you must be prepared for the locks, high water, and climbing over other boats something we learned but Viking made everything happen smoothly. We obviously enjoyed the cruise because was are taking another one in 2017 this time in Portugal. We have been on several ocean cruises but really liked the small ship cruise much better. If we ever take another ocean cruise it will be on a small ship with only a few hundred passengers. Traveling with Viking has always been a pleasure. This was our 3rd cruise with Viking. Our Cruise Director was incredible! He greeted us at the entrance to the boat and learned our names immediately. We suspect he knew everyone's name on the ship. We were most impressed with this young man. All of the staff were exemplary and went out of their way to see that we had a good time and that our needs were met. Our Chef was from Austria and prepared some very good dishes and you could always see him about the ship talking and getting feedback from passengers. Excursions were really well done with knowledgeable and friendly guides. Excursions are the highlight of our travel with Viking as well as the dining! We arrived in Marseille two days early on our own and had a local guide show us Aix en Provence. Delightful day and money well spent. We had paid for a transfer from Marseille to Avignon and that went fairly smoothly. The most frustrating portion of the transfer was pre-arrival when trying to get the logistics down with Viking customer service. That portion could have been more expedient without having to call numerous times to determine the transfer location and time. Once the transfer was in progress all went well and arrival at the ship was timely and we had a comfortable mini-van. We are Viking lovers and have four more cruises on the books over the next two years. Read Less

This was the second cruise with this basic Itinerary. Because of the larger ship this time, every destination was a little bit different. We enjoyed the daily excursions. We tried the "leisure walk" option once, but found that the normally paced tours were more to our liking. On more than one occasion we took advantage of being tied up in the city center to explore on our own. The meals were very good, and the featured dishes were often typical of the region where we were traveling. Having complimentary beer or wine with lunch and dinner adds to the ambience. There was even an herb garden on the sun deck. There were two venues for lunch, which gave a choice of an outdoor buffet or indoor dining room with table service. The larger ships make possible larger cabins. Ours was quite nice. We always enjoy the Viking cruises. They are expensive, but we think we get a fair deal for our money. Though we have lived and traveled in Europe many times, we had not been to Southern France and wanted to explore that part of Europe. The trip up the Rhone from Avignon to Lyon was just the right choice. Lots of good stops, tours, and travels, and in the meantime living on a really nifty ship with many amenities. While the trip to the ship is not all that much fun, once you get on board for your week of exploration, one's experience is definitely improved. The cabins are well-laid out and meet one's needs beautifully. The wall-to-wall and ceiling to floor sliding doors give one incredible views of the scenery outside. The food on board is excellent and the supply of complimentary wine and beer at lunch and dinner is something one cannot resist. The morning tours are always instructive, thanks to very good guides. Since the number of folks on board is relatively small (165 in our case), one never feels like one is in a herd of cattle. The experience is small scale, something we really enjoy. The population of the ship was evenly split between Brits and Americans. We took the occasion to converse with many Brits, who were great conversationalists. Read Less

Recommendations from friends. We were skeptical about traveling with a large group. However, the first night we met an amazing couple. The gentleman was 104 and the lady was in her nineties. They were energetic and charming. We were on walking tours with them and they had no issues with the physical exertion. From that first night we met many interesting and enjoyable people in all age groups. The daily tours were well planned, interesting and included professional and knowledgeable guides. One guide was able to describe a church from outside the church without missing a beat. She was able to describe the seven tapestries in order without hesitation. That was typical of the knowledge of the guides. Most afternoons, we explored by ourselves, but did enjoy lunch in town with fellow cruisers. The food aboard ship was excellent. The service was impeccable from a friendly, cheerful staff. The Program Director was remarkable, very friendly and available. Her enthusiasm was evident and added greatly to an already marvelous experience. The remainder of the crew was just as professional and friendly. From housekeeping to the Captain, nothing was too much trouble or inconvenient. By the time we left, we felt like part of the Viking family. Our extended stay in Paris was more of the same. The excursions were varied and excellent, although the cobblestone streets on most of the excursions were a challenge to a number of the older passengers. The menu items were varied and cooked to perfection. Although I am generally not predisposed to choose fish for dinner, I found the fish dishes to be the most outstanding of all the meals. The wine was excellent in both white and red. The wait staff was friendly and excellent. They were knowledgeable regarding wine and dinner choices, and could describe cooking techniques and choices with knowledge and humor. Friends had recommended Viking River Cruises. Everything exceeded expectations. Food, cabin, tours were uniformly excellent. All crew members were attentive. Whenever the slightest inconvenience arose our crew chief, Susie, miraculously appeared on the scene to fix things. So sad to hear of their recent tragedy. Highly recommend the evening tour to Monaco. We took the optional tour of the abbey at Cluny and, once again, our guide was terrific. The most surprising place was Lyon. Never dreamed it was such a wonderful place. We hope to return some day when we can spend more time there. Viking is a little pricey, but I believe the money was well spent! Read Less
