First river cruise. - everything was efficient, well-organized, great staff, interesting on-board activities (silk industry / wine tasting / piano player in lounge - very talented and amiable) inspiring excursions with knowledgeable tour guides. Very pleasant to have only about 180 fellow travellers, a more personal experience. I would definitely cruise with Viking again. We were made welcome even before boarding - as we walked toward the ship, staff came to take our baggage. Attention to detail included a special rich chocolate drink on our return to the ship after a chilly day on shore; another day we were treated to a local aperitif; on another day, we were presented with a Provençal lunch comprised of various cheeses, several entrees including ratatouille, many desserts including eclairs, and tables set with Provençal tablecloths (and staff dressed in French fashion). Wines and beers were provided in abundance at lunches and dinners; table staff were friendly and helpful and did their best to enrich our dining experiences - getting to know these people certainly added to our cruise experience. Loved the ship and always love the included walking tours. You really see and learn a lot that way. As soon as you get to the boat the crew is on hand to help check you in and make sure you really feel welcomed and are ready for the adventure. I wouldn't advise taking children as there seems to be a more mature group of people on these cruises. They are all ready to have fun though and are very inclusive if younger people do happen to be on board. The food is always good and plentiful and wine is always included with lunch and dinner at no cost if that is an issue. Overall really love Viking and have been on 2 cruises but may be looking at the Viking Ocean cruises next. We shall see as there are still many river cruises that are on our wish list so...either way, I'm sure it will be just as fine. Read Less

Having cruised with Viking before, we looked for a cruise that we could combine with a week in Munich for Oktoberfest before or after. We found it on Viking, of course! Fantastic food, wonderful staterooms, beautiful and exciting tours! What more could we ask?! They make everything so easy it’s practically a no-brainer! The daily tours are very well thought out and gave us a wonderful tour and plenty of time on our own! Someone is always around if you need directions or information. It was nice to have the option of a less vigorous city tour for the less mobile! The tour to Cesky Krumlov was spectacular! What a beautiful castle and town! It was just one of the highlights of our tour! They’ve got their systems down to a science from the moment you arrive until the day you disembark nothing is overlooked or missed unless you miss it yourself! We’re already booked on your one of your Ocean cruises next fall. I have every confidence it’ll be just as spectacular!!! Thank you Viking! Read Less

My husband and I chose this trip for my birthday because I wanted to return to France after having gone on the Viking Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise 4 years ago. (And before that, I wasn't particularly interested in France, but some friends had asked then, so we said yes.) After 2 previous cruises with Viking, there was no doubt that they were going to be part of the 2017 celebration. In spite of world events the day of our arrival (knife attack in the Marseilles train station shortly before we arrived at the Marseilles airport), our transfer guide was there to greet us and get us to the ship as scheduled. Once we arrived, our luggage was transferred to our room, for us and we headed to the lounge and deck to meet some of our fellow travelers. It was great to unwind after the trip-before-the-vacation. As usual, everything met our expectations from the start. After that first evening, I think we joined in all but one of the included tours and added a couple of extra tours that particularly appealed to us. Every single guide that we had was fabulous, from the singing Camille in the Avignon Pope's Palace to the great story-teller Frances in Viviers to Christian in Lyon (who very poetically explained that 'it's French; it's complicated'). It says a lot when I'm writing this 3 months later and I still remember the guide's names and personalities! While the rooms on the ship are small, they are arranged well, have everything we needed including space for everything (with a small fridge to keep some water in). And honestly, we really didn't spend much more time than sleeping, showering and changing in it. Even when we weren't on an excursion, we enjoyed the sundeck and the lounge area. It was great to come back to the room one day and find the maid had included our small, stuffed cow traveling companion with some hand towel animals on the bed. I also used the laundry service on this trip--nowhere near as expensive as I expected and the clothes were done perfectly. Okay, about the food--sensational and enough variety for anyone. I tend not to be too adventurous when it comes to food, but I tried a lot of new things on this ship and was hugely happy that I did. Chef Josef and his work are incredible. We were also impressed with the entire staff on the ship. Everyone was incredibly cordial and sometimes quite humorous (Manuel!) After the first or second day, many of the main staff knew a lot of people by name, what your drink preference might be, and what you might be interested in. The evenings offered a variety of entertainment but wasn't so loud and distracting that we couldn't sit in a corner in the lounge with some friends and have a quiet conversation. We love the Viking ships because they're large enough to have something for everyone and small enough that you get to actually get to know (not merely meet) some new people. We're still friends with people we met on our first Viking trip 5 years ago. I would love to go on this cruise again or any other Viking cruise! Read Less

Everything was performed with CH precision! Ship was immaculate and tours excellent throughout. Everything was flawless!! Food-excellent and ample. Viking post add-on to Paris performed perfectly. Airport transfers executed without problems. We enjoyed the lounge aboard ship and spent a good deal of time relaxing there. Viviers was a surprise and gave us a good appreciation of what it must have been like to live in France during the middle ages. We felt that we finally got to know Lyon and had enough free time there to fully explore the area. The only negative was the air transportation. We went comfort class but were disappointed in the stateside portion of the flight. We would have preferred a more direct flight. I was told (after the fact) that we could have worked with Viking to improve the flight selection. We will try doing that next time AND THERE WILL MOST DEFINATELY BE A NEXT TIME!!! Read Less

As a wine lover, I wanted to travel to the area where the best wine came from. While I could have chosen another cruise that concentrated more on wine country, my wife is a fan of history and this trip combined the two superbly. It was my first experience with Viking River Cruises. I feel the choice could not have been better. From the comfort and condition of the ship, to the attentiveness of the crew, I was made to feel like a long time passenger onboard. The dining was spectacular. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were so varied and exquisitely prepared it would be impossible not to have your taste buds tantalized and a satiating amount to eat. Being that it was a cruise in France, the cuisine followed suit. Gourmet offerings of escargot and frog legs as appetizers highlighted the main courses they accompanied. The food offered was so good, different, and surprising it would take up too much space to describe here. So, all this, and then there was the touring experience at each port of call. Every evening the next day's itinerary in extolled by the cruise director in the comfort of the lounge before dinner. The ships passengers were assigned to small groups of 20-25 people. Each group was led by a seasoned guide for the town. Not only were the guides I experienced knowledgeable, they expressed how much they enjoyed showing you the town. And there is no trouble hearing the guide, because you have a personal earpiece allowing you to hear them even sixty feet away. The value of the cruise is hard to believe until you have the experience. There are other tours that may be lower priced, but I felt that Viking had everything so well planned and executed there was never a concern about fully enjoying myself. I don't yet know when or where, but I look forward to my next cruise with Viking. And also meeting so many other interesting fellow cruisers. Read Less

Dear friends asked if we'd like to join them on a Viking River Cruise. We had not been to Europe before and thought if ever now would be a great time with our friends who travel extensively. We were very pleased with Viking Buri shipand crew. They made us feel lke honored guest. The cabin we chose was a French Balcony with sliding door to the outside I would recommed this type room, they are small and the slider gives you the open feeling and you can get fresh air. If you are heading North I would suggets the Starboard side rooms as they face rive river when docked. The dinning was fobulous great selections and well served. Wine, beer and soft drinks included with your meals. The overall service was terrific fromthe cabin attendents to the lounge, dinning room and front desk. The tours were very good, we recommend the Pont Du Guard trip to see this Roman Aquiduct over 2000 years old and still standing! Avignon and Lyon where our favorinte ports easy to walk around and very friendly atmosphere. I recommend at least trying to speak some French like bonjour and merci it goes a long way just trying is appreciated by the locals. Just a heads up, you must move your luggage from the buses to and thru the airports which are quite large, be sure you have rolling bags! Viking is a class act I can not imagine any other line doing as well. WQe will do another river cruise in the future with them. Read Less

This was our second river cruise with Viking. We had such a wonderful experience with previous cruise on the Rhine and Danube that we jumped at the two-for-one offer for the Rhone in France with the optional 3 day stay in Paris following the cruise. I love that they take all the stress out of traveling, provide daily educational included tours with local guides plus optional ones, and serve delicious meals. Our cabin, though small, had everything we needed. With 192 cruisers it's just the right size to meet and share experiences with other travelers. The staff are extremely customer oriented, well organized and efficient. The program director and hotel manager were terrific. Our stay in Paris included a well located hotel, a bus tour of the city and a Viking. representative available daily at the hotel. There were several optional tours but we choose to explore on our own. Highly recommend this company. Read Less

This was our second Viking and it met the high standards of the first one. The service was excellent. The food continues to be superb and the staff are the best. Like one big family. The shore excursions were just the right length and time. Being a short cruise little time was actually spent looking at the countryside as most movement was at night. The director was fabulously entertaining as were the wait staff. They all seemed to love their job, especially those that had worked on other cruise lines. They said Viking was the best. My one negative was when they were presenting the opportunity to buy travel certificates for future travel. It was not made clear that only 1 per person can be used per cruise. We did the Paris extension and very impressed with the care we were given from the ship through to checking in at the airport. Viking staff members were with us every single step of the way. The Paris hotel was fine and within walking distance of many fine restaurants. Read Less

I chose this cruise for both the pre and post trips to Nice and Paris, and the route along the Rhone River in France, visiting medieval towns and areas Van Gogh painted. Visiting Roman ruins, Provence and truffle hunting were all bonuses. You learn so much on a Viking trip, history, architecture, local areas and customs. I chose daily shore excursions, some 1/2 day, some full day, and all were excellent. I especially liked going to a town in France called Perouges, with it's beautiful architecture. A photographer's dream. The organic lunch with the truffle farmer and then going truffle hunting was another highlight. The pre and post trips to Nice, which included an evening in Monaco, and then a post extension in Paris was indeed a dream come true. Going to the top of the Eiffel tower, a cruise on the Seine, nighttime city tour of Paris with all the city lights, and an afternoon trip to Versaille were all highlights! Thank you Viking for your excellence and a huge kudos to all the staff and guides for a memorable experience! Read Less

We had a terrible experience on our Viking River Cruise in Southern France. We were alerted about 1 week in advance that our 7 night river cruise would be reduced to 5 nights because the Viking Buri ship needed scheduled maintenance. We would be moved to a Sofitel Hotel in Lyon France for the last 2 nights of the cruise. As retribution, Viking gave us a voucher for $250 per person to use on a future cruise. This in itself was a major inconvenience. We take cruises for the simple reason of not having to pack and repack our belongings, while moving from city-to-city. This cruise was all inclusive including meals. So we paid for these meals. While on the ship, Viking provided several meal and drink choices. While at the Sofitel Hotel, Viking included breakfast, lunch and dinner. The problem was that the two dinner meals were terrible. The first night, the only offering on the menu was veal. We cannot eat veal. Viking refused to provide any other meal choices. So we went to a restaurant at our own expense. The second night, the only dinner offering on the menu was lamb. We cannot eat lamb either. So, again we went to a restaurant at our own expense. On the second night, people were totally disgusted. At least 60 out of 180 people followed suit and went to restaurants. Viking refused to reimburse us for our restaurant expenses. A voucher for $250 per person is an embarrassment. We asked that Viking increase their voucher of $250 per person to cover our inconveniences and additional dinner expenses. They refused. The bottom line is that unless Viking compensates us for this our inconveniences and additional expenses, we are cancelling our Viking Southern Mediterranean Ocean Cruise that is already booked and paid for next year. We have been planning to go to the South of a France for a long time. We were very disappointed with the trip in general. We spent over $6,000.00 for a trip that was underwhelming and at times quite unpleasant. Our cabin consistently smelled of raw sewage, even with the staff cleaning it daily. The smell was consistent and very hard to tolerate. We visited the lounge to escape the smell, but very difficult for the 8 days. The food was disappointing in general. The meals were a great disappoint for us as well. The welcome lunch featured tuna salad on pita bread and pasta seemed to be the theme of the entire trip. The snack area consisted of two types of cookies everyday, every time. The French themed lunch was fantastic! That was what we expected. We were exhausted from traveling the first day and fell asleep in our cabin. We were late to dinner and was scolded and told we could only have the soup, lamb and desert, because we were late. Very embarrasing...other people heard the conversation. This was our second riverboat cruise and our first was fantastic!! This past trip was a huge disappointment for us. It was not special. It seemed like business as usual instead of understanding that people have waited for a long time to have this experience. We went home very sad, underwhelmed and extremely disappointed. The cruise was all well done with attention to detail. The ship and cabins were clean and well kept. Rooms were done quickly and efficiently. In fact they were done twice daily with a turn down service every night. Smiling and inviting service was there all the way through the cruise. The entertainment was well done and interactive with some real fun on board with the crew getting in on the fun. We really enjoyed the different towns we stopped in. It was so nice to wake up and open the curtains in places like Tournon, which was just beautiful and we had a great tour of this delightful city. Having the boat in the harbour makes for some real flexibility as you could come and go for lunch and you did not have to commit for a whole day on a bus for the majority of tours as they are right off the boat. The shore excursions were varied, interesting and informative. From great city tours, to wine tastings and truffle hunting, we enjoyed them all. The great service by the Viking crew during cruise was truly appreciated. We can't wait for our next journey! Read Less

This was our very first cruise of any kind, so we have nothing to compare it with. We had considered the South of France for a honeymoon when we got married 4 years ago-neither of us had been to France before. When we saw the deal for this cruise, we booked it right away and are so glad we did! It was hot, but France was beautiful-we loved it and look forward to going back! Highlights for me were Avignon and Tournon-the walled city was so charming, and Tournon was just really cool-I fell in love the minute we walked into town-the scenery, the architecture, the forests, the steam train-and our guide, Philippe. I could live there! Another highlight was our excursion into the Ardeche region-unlike anything I have ever seen and fascinating. We loved Cluny, too-gorgeous countryside and impressive abbey. I liked Paris but not as much as the smaller towns in Southern France. We loved the local guides, too. Our crew was stellar, especially Christine, our cruise director-she was simply fabulous! We also loved the young people who served us meals-so friendly and nice. I wish I had had the chance to practice my French a bit more, but that is a minor thing. Overall, the service was exceptional. The food was good, but there were a few "misses"-I did see some regional food, but it appeared that some meal choices were the chef's interpretation of regional specialties. The Provencal luncheon was wonderful-from the tablecloths to the food served that day. Overall, the food was very good and we liked having choices for all our meals. The shore excursions were great, and I'm glad we were able to add on the ones to the Ardeche and Cluny-I just wish we hadn't missed one of the towns because of the Ardeche excursion. It was hard to choose some of them! We loved the ship and look forward to our next river cruise! It was the trip of a lifetime! Read Less

We stayed in Nice for 3 days prior to the cruise, which was a great way to see a wonderful city, while acclimating to the time difference. Viking met us at the airport and shuttled us to our hotel, where we met our Viking staff who took care of us on our Nice visit. The Le Meridian was a comfortable hotel and convenient to the sea and downtown. We also got top enjoy a Jazz festival the coincided with our time there. We were comfortably transported to our ship by motor coach and greeted warmly once onboard the Viking Heimdal in Avignon. We stayed in a suite which I would recommend. The service on Viking is fabulous. This was our second cruise with them, and we are already planning another. Everyone speaks english buy do learn a bit of the local language. We might have planned too many excursions and will plan on spending more time onboard next time. The food is plentiful, fresh and deliciously prepared. Great wines as well. Good idea to buy the Spirits package. There are some wonderful excursions with guides that truly know each port that you visit. I retired at the end of June 2017, and took my family on the Delling Rhône River Cruise in France to celebrate! We visited Arles, Vienne, Avignon, Lyon. The river cruise ship was wonderful and the staff so delightful! It was a “dream come true”! We couldn’t believe we were really there. Our cabins with balconies were lovely, and sitting out on the balcony and smoothly sailing down the river felt unreal! Going through the locks on the river , and even touching the walls of the locks since you are just inches away, was a treat. Our tours of Arles, Lyon, and a day touring the lavender fields with lunch in a small, lovely cafe in a tiny hilltop town, was amazing. I’ve read the Peter Mayle “A Year in Provence” books, and watched the movies, and to finally be there was just wonderful! It just adds to my fascination with all things French; even my French antique furniture at home in California. Read Less

The ship was kept clean and well maintained at all times. The excursions were very educational and enjoyable. We new river cruises had less entertainment than ocean cruises; but were pleasantly surprised by the amount and quality of entertainment. We found the river cruise more relaxing than the ocean cruises we have been on. We enjoyed having fewer people on the ship than ocean cruises. We had the drink package and thought the wines were excellent. We had never been through locks before and found them very interesting. I'm an engineer so you may not feel the same. And if all that weren't enough, every crew member acted like they truly cared about us the entire time. This was the first Viking cruise we have ever been on and it was easily the best cruise we've ever been on. We stayed in Paris a few days after this cruise and thoroughly enjoyed that too.
