Avignon has been on my bucket list since high school. Everything about this lived up to our expectations and in fact surpassed them. When I called to make the reservations, Damian Tulloch spent and hour and a half on the phone with me to make sure that everything I was looking for was taken care of. The staff on the cruise was top notch, especially the Program Manager, Oliver. He was truly amazing. I don't know how he did it, but he managed to be with every single group during every tour, to make sure that everyone had everything they needed. We signed up for two of the special tours, Flavors of Provence, and a Taste of Lyon. Both were excellent. All of the tour guides were well versed on their areas. We were really pleased with all of the shore excursions, especially the steam train in Tournon, such a beautiful area. Our cabin was a perfect size for our needs and was kept spotless by the cleaning staff. On the 18th, we returned to our room to find a "cake" made of towels and a note from the staff wishing my husband Happy Birthday. Such incredible thoughtfulness. Viking truly is the best. They made it a very special trip for us. Read Less

We had taken a Viking River Cruise on the Rhone River last year, and we thoroughly enjoyed that river cruise. Service on this Viking Rhone River Cruise in France (Avignon to Lyon) was excellent. The staff members we encountered were always cheerful, courteous and helpful. Our room was kept neat and clean. The lobby and other common areas were always in tip-tip shape. Shore excursions were well planned, and were led by knowledgeable guides. The shore excursion venues that were selected by Viking were thoughtfully chosen. We would had like to have had some additional 'free time' during our trip to explore on our own. Meals on board were always excellent! The preparation and presentation were top notch! Evening entertainment was good. We traveled with my brother and sister-in law, but we also met many interesting people on the boat. The scenery was beautiful. We highly recommend this river cruise. First, we tried to take advantage of their low airfares. However, they charged us extra to come in early and stay later since we didn’t want to use their overpriced extensions. Also, their travel group was Very difficult to deal with. The good: The staff was, by far, the highlight of the trip. They are extremely well trained, friendly and quick to help. The French balcony room was very well designed and made excellent use of space. We liked the bed and the design of the shower. The bad: The “included tours” were too large (38-42 people). In hindsight, we would have preferred no included tours, at a lower price and booked our own. In addition, some tours were not that great, even with if it had been a small group. Viviers, in particular, was a sad little forgotten town with not much to see. You had to pay a premium to get a smaller group. One such “optional” tour was 120 euros per person and the group size was 22 people. The food was so so. We expected excellent food and got mediocre. The pre-cruise information talked of three venues, but in reality, there were two with basically the same menu. Tandem docking, ships docked side by side, was the norm at each port, taking away the view from our French balcony on a regular basis. There were only four ports on an 8 day cruise and very little daytime cruising. The sundeck was closed 90% of the cruise. The overall experience: We paid a premium to take a Viking river cruise and didn’t receive a premium experience. How anyone can give this cruis 5 stars is absurd. Read Less

For my sister's 65th birthday, we decided to cruise southern France with Viking. She & her husband started with the pre-cruise stay in Nice (which they loved), and my cousin and I joined them on the ship at Avignon for the cruise to Lyon. I have been on several river and a couple of ocean cruises with Viking, so it was no surprise that the week was delightful. The staff catered to us & made us happy every day. The cruise director was personable & perky; it was always a joy to have her company. This was southern France, so I wasn't sure if the food could live up to expectations, but no problem pleasing us & reminding us that we were in France. The young chef did not disappoint. Good food, good cheese, good wine. Happiness. Three excursions exceeded my expectations: Flavors of Provence in Avignon, the included tour in Lyon with Christian, and the all day Lyon tour Truffles and Beaujolais. In Avignon, Maison de Fogasses with Chef Luigi Baptiste was the best of the best! I think he enjoyed us as much as we enjoyed him & his lunch! Christian took us into "secret" passageways & shared his Lyon. And the truffle dog Chinook was as delightful as the truffle inspired dishes served to us on the truffle farm! No disappointment on this trip; the only problem is that I want to repeat the experience. Read Less

This was our third Uniworld Cruise and we can’t imagine using another river cruise line. The ship is beautiful and modern. Our suite even had tvs in the mirrors in the bedroom and bathroom. Our suite was 300 square feet of luxury with fabric covered walls and drapes. There was lots of closet space and the king bed faced the river, unlike many other ships. We had an open bar in crystal decanters as well as a fully stocked fridge with juices, water and mixers all replenished daily. Our butler, Tibor greeted us in our room and took care of every request, right down to the brands of alcohol we requested. He anticipated many before we ever even asked. Our room attendant, Peter was always prompt attentive and pleasant. The food on board was wonderful with so many selections it was hard to choose. Our main waiter, Miguel was a dream...friendly, attentive, funny and fluent in English, as was the entire crew. At dinner, if you can’t choose between two entrees, Miguel would just bring both, no problem. The menu also had selections for those with dietary requirements. Nothing was ever a problem. The somolier, Laura was knowledgeable and attentive and had recommendations for us every evening. The bar was open and bright and Frederico and Fredrica were ever present, quickly learning our preferences and bringing them almostvas soon as we sat down. Want a particular brand?? No problem, just ask. There were so many wonderful staffers..Nedko, Sandu, Richard, and too may others to name, but everyone working onboard always had a smile and a desire to please. From the chef to the spa attendant, these people were on a quest to make us happy. I don’t want to knock other cruiselines, but for river cruises, we’ll never look elsewhere. Read Less

We had never been to France and this was a special trip. Our 40th Anniversary. Viking was the right choice in every respect. We added two extensions, both through Viking. The French Riviera (Nice, Monaco, Cannes & Paris as a Grand Finale). Accommodations, Hosting, Dining and Transportation were outstanding. The ship was well appointed and modern. The staff extremely courteous and professional in every respect. The river, villages and sites were pristine, historical and stunning. If you choose to go out on your own and explore, you can do so and the staff will offer pointers. If you choose to remain in a your group and gain insight from the host tour director then that is also a fine way to enjoy the history and various sites. The option is entirely yours. From meeting you at the airport to recommending fine dining on shore, the list is endless of the assistance that Viking offers each passenger. We will most definitely be traveling with Viking again in the future and highly recommend to the traveler wishing to encorporate quality, comfort, convenience, information, fine dining, luxury and value. Viking, in our opinion is simply one of the very best if not the very best all around cruise experiences in the industry. Read Less

This was our fourth Viking river cruise, this one traveling the Rhône River from Avignon to Lyon. Each river cruise has been very different due to the location, theme, and staff. All have been excellent. The Heimdal is a typical Viking longboat: spacious, inviting, spotlessly clean, and well run. Food on this cruise was outstanding.we had the pleasure of being upgraded to one of the two explorer suites on board, and we could not have been happier. Our cruise director was Lorin, whom we met on our first cruise in Bourdeau, and he is outstanding. Local guides were excellent. We particularly enjoyed the optional excursions to Chateauneuf de Pape, including a visit to Chateau Beaucastel, and the full-day excursion to the Ardeche region. Avignon is a great small town for walking...shopping is great. Arles was quite interesting, and we enjoyed lunch on our own at L’Entrevue, recommended by Viking. We highly recommend that restaurant. Loved Lyon, great city, like Paris, but clean. Read Less

The ship was clean and elegant. The crew was outstanding including; Paul, Daniel, Christian, Mila, Elana and others. We reunited with Paul, a great waiter, whom we met on the prior Danube trip. His personal service was so nice. We had friend on board from the time of our arrival. Excursions were enjoyable with unique experiences and knowledgeable local guides. Our favorites includes: lunch with the Count, mid day stops in Vivere, Arles and Macon. Great wine tasting throughout the cruise. Those tastings were top notch. Cuisine on board was super. We were trilled at each meal. The dinners were all unique. The daily activities were well planned as well. We would travel with Uniworld again and are thankful for the memorable trip they delivered. okay, lets get right to it. my wife and i just got back from our firsr river cruise on the rhone 1 week ago and it was awesome. i had many concerns based on previous negative reviews, all of which were unfounded. our trip was great, we already scheduled our next one. some of the negative comments are just inherent in a river cruise , many locks, sail alot at night, tie up to other ships at ports in which case you may be looking right into another persons cabin. if this bothers you, dont do a river cruise. it is a different way travel, accept it. once you do the experience is awesome. so different from an ocean cruise of which we've done many. we liked the small group and the smaller ship, it fostered intimacy and togetherness, you would get to know your fellow travelers better than on an ocean liner. they are an older crowd, no kids on our trip although there was a newly married young couple celebrating their honeymoon. very high end, everything was great, rooms very clean, food was wonderful with many options, wines were plentiful, included shore excursions and guides were all top notch. the roman ruins, the medievil villages, the winerys, the vibrancy of lyon, were truly one of a kind experiences. we did 3 extra excursions which were also great. four of our 7 stops were right in town, 3 we had to take a bus. we didnt consider this a problem, some may see it as so. it was a wonderful experience, cant wait to go again! My husband and I chose this trip for my birthday because I wanted to return to France after having gone on the Viking Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise 4 years ago. (And before that, I wasn't particularly interested in France, but some friends had asked then, so we said yes.) After 2 previous cruises with Viking, there was no doubt that they were going to be part of the 2017 celebration. In spite of world events the day of our arrival (knife attack in the Marseilles train station shortly before we arrived at the Marseilles airport), our transfer guide was there to greet us and get us to the ship as scheduled. Once we arrived, our luggage was transferred to our room, for us and we headed to the lounge and deck to meet some of our fellow travelers. It was great to unwind after the trip-before-the-vacation. As usual, everything met our expectations from the start. After that first evening, I think we joined in all but one of the included tours and added a couple of extra tours that particularly appealed to us. Every single guide that we had was fabulous, from the singing Camille in the Avignon Pope's Palace to the great story-teller Frances in Viviers to Christian in Lyon (who very poetically explained that 'it's French; it's complicated'). It says a lot when I'm writing this 3 months later and I still remember the guide's names and personalities! While the rooms on the ship are small, they are arranged well, have everything we needed including space for everything (with a small fridge to keep some water in). And honestly, we really didn't spend much more time than sleeping, showering and changing in it. Even when we weren't on an excursion, we enjoyed the sundeck and the lounge area. It was great to come back to the room one day and find the maid had included our small, stuffed cow traveling companion with some hand towel animals on the bed. I also used the laundry service on this trip--nowhere near as expensive as I expected and the clothes were done perfectly. Okay, about the food--sensational and enough variety for anyone. I tend not to be too adventurous when it comes to food, but I tried a lot of new things on this ship and was hugely happy that I did. Chef Josef and his work are incredible. We were also impressed with the entire staff on the ship. Everyone was incredibly cordial and sometimes quite humorous (Manuel!) After the first or second day, many of the main staff knew a lot of people by name, what your drink preference might be, and what you might be interested in. The evenings offered a variety of entertainment but wasn't so loud and distracting that we couldn't sit in a corner in the lounge with some friends and have a quiet conversation. We love the Viking ships because they're large enough to have something for everyone and small enough that you get to actually get to know (not merely meet) some new people. We're still friends with people we met on our first Viking trip 5 years ago. I would love to go on this cruise again or any other Viking cruise! Read Less

This was our very first cruise of any kind, so we have nothing to compare it with. We had considered the South of France for a honeymoon when we got married 4 years ago-neither of us had been to France before. When we saw the deal for this cruise, we booked it right away and are so glad we did! It was hot, but France was beautiful-we loved it and look forward to going back! Highlights for me were Avignon and Tournon-the walled city was so charming, and Tournon was just really cool-I fell in love the minute we walked into town-the scenery, the architecture, the forests, the steam train-and our guide, Philippe. I could live there! Another highlight was our excursion into the Ardeche region-unlike anything I have ever seen and fascinating. We loved Cluny, too-gorgeous countryside and impressive abbey. I liked Paris but not as much as the smaller towns in Southern France. We loved the local guides, too. Our crew was stellar, especially Christine, our cruise director-she was simply fabulous! We also loved the young people who served us meals-so friendly and nice. I wish I had had the chance to practice my French a bit more, but that is a minor thing. Overall, the service was exceptional. The food was good, but there were a few "misses"-I did see some regional food, but it appeared that some meal choices were the chef's interpretation of regional specialties. The Provencal luncheon was wonderful-from the tablecloths to the food served that day. Overall, the food was very good and we liked having choices for all our meals. The shore excursions were great, and I'm glad we were able to add on the ones to the Ardeche and Cluny-I just wish we hadn't missed one of the towns because of the Ardeche excursion. It was hard to choose some of them! We loved the ship and look forward to our next river cruise! It was the trip of a lifetime! Read Less

We stayed in Nice for 3 days prior to the cruise, which was a great way to see a wonderful city, while acclimating to the time difference. Viking met us at the airport and shuttled us to our hotel, where we met our Viking staff who took care of us on our Nice visit. The Le Meridian was a comfortable hotel and convenient to the sea and downtown. We also got top enjoy a Jazz festival the coincided with our time there. We were comfortably transported to our ship by motor coach and greeted warmly once onboard the Viking Heimdal in Avignon. We stayed in a suite which I would recommend. The service on Viking is fabulous. This was our second cruise with them, and we are already planning another. Everyone speaks english buy do learn a bit of the local language. We might have planned too many excursions and will plan on spending more time onboard next time. The food is plentiful, fresh and deliciously prepared. Great wines as well. Good idea to buy the Spirits package. There are some wonderful excursions with guides that truly know each port that you visit. I cannot Compliment Viking enough for their extremely professional experience at every level. I forgot my IPhone on the coach and the quickly found it and got it back to me. We made many friends on this cruise who we remain in touch with and plan on cruising with them again. Read Less

The ship and crew were exceptional. They both have our highest recommendation. The food was delicious. It was perfectly prepared and served with style and elegance. The ship was kept clean and well maintained at all times. The excursions were very educational and enjoyable. We new river cruises had less entertainment than ocean cruises; but were pleasantly surprised by the amount and quality of entertainment. We found the river cruise more relaxing than the ocean cruises we have been on. We enjoyed having fewer people on the ship than ocean cruises. We had the drink package and thought the wines were excellent. We had never been through locks before and found them very interesting. I'm an engineer so you may not feel the same. And if all that weren't enough, every crew member acted like they truly cared about us the entire time. This was the first Viking cruise we have ever been on and it was easily the best cruise we've ever been on. We stayed in Paris a few days after this cruise and thoroughly enjoyed that too. It was a perfect combination with the cruise. The history and architecture in Paris was breathtaking. Very romantic--if you can't get a little action from your wife or hubby in Paris you really need to see a therapist :). Read Less

Our 3rd Viking cruise (our first that wasn't Danube or Rhine Christmas Markets) and always a real pleasure. Spent some time in Marseille and Aix them off to Avignon to begin the cruise. Service, food, ports, and shore activities were excellent. Travelled with (new) friends we met on the earlier Danube cruise and made new friends on this cruise. What made this cruise particularly special was the wonderful food and wine in each city, notably Lyon and Arles (as well as the excellent food served onboard). Tour of Chateauneuf du Pape vineyards were a highlight as well as Avignon Castle of the Popes and city tour of Lyon (an amazing city). Used Viking for airline reservations and transfers and everything went off without a hitch. Considering another Christmas Markets cruise on Viking or trying Viking Ocean Cruises for a different experience. Crew and cruise director were excellent. Highly recommend Viking. Read Less

This was my first river cruise and heard that Uniworld would be the one to go with as they provide service, luxury and value. The service onboard can truly be called white glove service as all onboard truly provided you with the feeling that you are very important to each one onboard. The food onboard the SS Catherine was excellent from the morning juices, to the mid afternoon paninis and to our evening wine parings with local Michelin quality dining was superb. The ship is very well designed and decorated with rich overtures of the lovely French country side we would visit. With the ship sold out, the public spaces did not seem overloaded with guest and all flowed throughout the ship without a wait. The shore excursions are very well paced, whether you are active or not. Another important factor to choosing Uniworld was that all was inclusively well, no nickel and dimeing here at all. Read Less

We booked the "France's Finest" cruise which is a combination of the 7 day Lyon and Provence cruise and the 7 day Paris to Normandy cruise. We had never been on a river cruise and did so on the recommendation of friends who had. We arrive in Marseilles and there was a Viking representative waiting for us to take us to the port in Avignon. We boarded, secured our room key and were able to get into our room promptly. We booked the lowest level room because we had read that the balconies were not necessary on such a busy cruise and for the fact that sometimes the ships were stacked against each other in port which means you would be looking into another ship's rooms. That and being October, we weren't sure what sort of weather we would have. On ocean cruises we always book a balcony but it is usually summer and I do not regret not having a balcony. Our stateroom was 118 and was very nice. All rooms are pretty small, but storage is not an issue as there is room under the bed for suitcases, plenty of drawers and a nice closet. There is always a bottle of water, you get you own ice, the listening devices for the tours on the counter that you must always remember to charge and take with you. The window is large but high and set back from the room so there is a large shelf there. If you are in port and against the docking area, you will have to close your drapes. I liked with room because we were usually facing the river in most ports. The bathroom is small, of course, but there is plenty of area for toiletries and a nice size shower with great water pressure. Lunch was being served so we took advantage of that as we were tired and needed to freshen up before dinner. After resting, we made it to dinner even though we were exhausted. Met wonderful people and had an excellent meal. We purchased the beverage package even though you do get wine and beer included with dinner. I'm glad we did but not sure I would do again unless it was part of a promotion. Let me say at this point that the staff and crew of this ship were amazing. It did not matter if you met up with the captain or the kitchen staff, they all would greet you, wish you a nice day or ask your plans. Our room was spotless as was the entire ship. Our Program Director was Patricia on this leg of the cruise and she was truly special. She knew everything and was on pretty much every excursion. I don't know when she sleeps! And the food! Oh my! The selection is amazing and the quality even more so. The wait staff is helpful and fun. We usually tried to sit in the same area for dinner on both cruises and these people go to know us and did things without having to be asked. They are truly wonderful! Here is a rundown of the ports. I would suggest you do the included walking tours at each port. There is a wealth of information available through these guides and it will still leave you time to do other things. As with everything, there are guides who are better than others. The headsets are great but sometimes the accents are heavy and it might be a little hard to understand at times. Arles: We did the waking tour at 9:00 AM where we visited many of the town's sites. Beautiful town and October was such a great time to visit. The town is beautiful and the connection to van Gogh makes it very special. Weather perfect. In the afternoon we chose to do the Les Baux and Carrieres de Lumieres Show. The show was amazing and the town of Les Baux was worth the trip. Avginon: Even though we boarded here, we cruised to Arles first and then returned to Avignon. We also did the walking tour which included the Pope's Palace, a must see in this town, as well as a stop at Les Halles, the great market. We were able to spend time here, sample many treats and gaze longingly at amazing pastries! After lunch we did the Chateauneuf du Pape tour and tasting. I learned more at this tasting than I have at any other. Wine was amazing and we taken to the vineyards to see the vines and how they grow in rocks. The view from the castle ruins is beautiful and the stop in the small town allowed us to grab a coffee or do some shopping. Loved this excursion! Viviers: The walking tour here looks intimidating as you walk to the cathedral above the town, but it is very leisurely and beautiful. The view from the cathedral is very pretty and again, the weather was perfect. We were sailing not long after our return, but during the afternoon there was a cooking demonstration, galley tour, French tea time and and French lesson. I did them all and so enjoyed every one! Tournon: Short tour of the town and then on to the Tournon Steam Train tour. Again, the weather was perfect and this train ride was beautiful. Returned to the ship docked in Vienne and did the walking tour in the afternoon. This town was probably my least favorite but the tram ride to the to the cathedral provided beautiful views of the town and the river. Lyon: What a beautiful city! We did the city tour which included time in the old town. Plenty of shopping and eating here. You could return to the ship or stay and get back on your own. We were spending the night so many folks returned in the afternoon. The next day was disembarkation day. Since we were going on the Paris to Normandy cruise, we were taken to the train station and took the high speed train, first class, into Paris. Took about 2 hours and it was a very relaxing trip! Once off the train we were met by a Viking representative who took us to our next ship, the Rhinda. Everything about this cruise was perfect. Fellow cruisers are well-traveled and for the most part in their 50's and 60's. There were some young people but they are definitely in the minority. If this makes you think quiet and stodgy, you are wrong. These people love to party and everyone is so friendly that even if you are traveling alone or as a couple, you will meet people you will come to know very well through meals and excursions. That was one of the highlights of this cruise! This is the first time we have vacationed in October and it could not have been a better time. Crowds are small, weather might be cool in the morning but wonderful in the afternoon. Even the evenings were warm enough to be out and about. I loved being here in October. There is an elevator aboard but it only goes between the 2nd and third levels, not the bottom level where our cabin was. If you are in any unable to use stairs, you might want to check on this before you book a room on this level. This was a wonderful cruise from beginning to end mainly because of the wonderful staff and lovely ports. I will continue the review of the Rhinda on that page. Read Less

We loved the entire Viking experience, starting with 3 days in Nice. However, I would say that hotel in Nice wasn't quite up to our expectations. All things considered the hotel sufficed, considering how much we loved Nice and touring the area, including a side trip to Monaco. We then took about a 4 hour bus ride to Avignon, along with many Viking cruise members, from Nice. Once we embarked on the ship the entire experience was simply fantastic. From our state room,to the crew,to the food, to the entertainment and the daily tours, everything was 5 Stars. We are currently looking at a Viking Russian Cruise for this coming fall. We loved our first experience with Viking and highly recommend cruising with them. By the way, the daily port of call tours were very informative, set up in small groups, with the headphones and having very knowledge, attentive and professional tour guides. The buses were extremely comfortable with bathroom facilities and easy access on and off the bus. Read Less

The cabin while small was well designed with good use of space. We were in the lower deck with only a window but this was not an issue for us as its only a flight of stairs to the other decks. We met some great people and the seating at tables or 6 or 8 means everyone chats and shares experiences . There were daily updates on the events for the following day and a written page in the cabins as a reminder of times etc. I must say everyone kept to the agreed schedule at all times so no hanging around for 1 or 2 people at coach or pick ups. The Quitevox and earpiece was great for following the commentary of the guides . The only minor niggle was the absence of rose wine for most or the trip which in Provence is surprising but we made do with champagne instead! Many thanks to all at Viking and we hope to see you again soon. PM Read Less

We found the guides were extremely friendly and had great knowledge of each tour we experienced. In short, i must say my wife and friends had a most pleasurable time on our cruise. Read Less

Wanted to see Avignon and Arles and also Monaco and Nice. The food and service were terrific. Was hoping for a more scenic trip, but it is what it is. The tour guides were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. We got many good tips where to. Have lunch from the guides. The waiters and bartenders were also extremely attentive and we had a good time with them. I hope more people have the opportunity to travel with Viking. I've made arrangements for our fourth trip for next spring on the Danube and we can't wait. All the places we visited were easily accessible even for those with mobility problems. We really enjoyed walking thru all the old towns with their narrow streets and great restaurants. The town squares are really good for people watching and having a cold beer or glass of wine. The side trip to Nice and Monaco were well worth the cost. Great hotels and tour guide. Read Less
